German Rotophot postcard featuring a 1902 photograph of the American soprano Geraldine Farrar as ‘Margarethe’ in Gounod’s opera ‘Faust’. Geraldine Farrar was born in Melrose, Massachusetts, 28th February 1882 and died Ridgefield, Connecticut, 11th March 1967. In 1884, at the age of 12, Farrar impersonated Jenny Lind in the Melrose May Carnival and within two years, she made her Boston recital debut. On 15 October 1901 aged 19 she made her Berlin debut as Marguerite in Faust ~ singing in Italian by special dispensation. In 1903 the great Lilli Lehmann accepted her as a pupil and they worked hard to perfect Farrar’s vocal technique and stage crafts. Geraldine Farrar retired from opera in 1922 at the age of 40 ~ her final performance being Leoncavallo's Zazà and she retired finally in 1931 when she sang her final Carnegie Hall recital and withdrew from further public performance. Geraldine Farrar created the title roles in – Pietro Mascagni's Amica ~ Monte Carlo 16th March 1905 Engelbert Humperdinck's Goose-girl in Die Königskinder ~ New York Met 28th Dec 1910 Umberto Giordano's Madame Sans-Gêne ~ New York Met 25th Jan 1915 Puccini's Suor Angelica ~ New York Met 14th Dec 1918 During her time she developed a great popular following, especially among New York's young female opera-goers, who were known as "Gerry-flappers". Her performances with Caruso were always eagerly awaited. She made 15 silent movies in the period of c1915 to 1920 commencing with the opera Carmen directed by Cecil B. DeMille and finally 'The Riddle: Woman directed by Edward Jose.

Here a picture of Melanie Kurt as Isolde.
Born on January 8th 1880 in Vienna, Melanie Kurt studied piano before her voice was discovered. Her singing teachers were Fanny Müller and Mari Lehmann, famous sister of the even more famous Lilli, Lehmann. In 1902 Kurt gave her debut as E1isabeth in "Tannhäuser" at the Stadttheater in Lübeck. In 1905 she moved on to Braunschweig and in 1908 arrived at the Berlin Court Opera. She became known internationally through her guest appearances at the London Covent Garden Opera as Sieglinde, in 1910 and later performances in Budapest, Dresden, Munich and several Italian Opera Houses. At the Salzburg Festival she sang together with Hermine Kittel and Lilli Lehmann the Three Ladies in "Die Zauberflöte". In 1913 she joined the ensemble of the just opened Deutsche Opernhaus Berlin, where she concentrated on dramatic roles: she was Berlin's first Kundry at the premiere at the Deutsches Opernhaus on January 1st 1914. Her contract with the Metropolitan Opera in 1915 can be considered the high point of the soprano's career. During those three years in New York she not only sang the dramatic Wagner-roles, but also mezzo roles, such as Fricka in "Rheingold", she was Amelia in "Un Ballo in Maschera" (with Enrico Caruso and Pasquale Amato), Marschallin in "Rosenkavalier", Iphigenie, Santuzza, Leonore ("Fidelio") and Pamina (in a cast which included Carl Braun and Frieda Hempel and saw as Tamino either Johannes Sembach, Jacques Urlus or Otto Goritz). In the programs of her MET concerts she also tried to include less familiar arias, such as the then only rarely performed Rezia aria from "Oberon" or Johanna's aria from the opera by Tschaikovsy. After the 1916/17 season most German singers, especially if they had focused their repertory on Wagner opera, left the MET: together with Margarete Arndt-Ober, Ernestine Schumann Heink, Johanna Gadski, Carl Braun, Otto Goritz, Johannes Sembach, Hermann Weiland Jacques Urlus Melanie Kurt left the United States in 1917. Kurt's last performance at the MET as Brünnhilde on March 28th 1917 (with Urlus, Braun, Reiss and Arndt-Ober) was at the same time the last "Siegfried" until 1923. After her return to Europe Melanie Kurt accepted no more long-term engagements but gave guest performances, especially in her much acclaimed Wagner roles, at all major European stages. She was the first Brünnhilde in "Siegfried" at the Waldoper Zoppot when the Festival was opened in 1922. The performance was conducted by the young Hans Knappertsbusch and the cast included Fritz Vogelstrom, Heinrich Knote, Werner Engel, Waldemar Henke, Desider Zador and Margarete Arndt-Ober. After having ended her singing career Melanie Kurt lived in Berlin and later in Vienna where she was active as a singing teacher. After the annexion of Austria by the Third Reich in 1938 she was able to leave her home country in time and emigrated to the United States where she died in New York on March 11th 1941.

Antonio Scotti (25 January 1866 – 26 February 1936) was an Italian baritone. He was a principal artist of the New York Metropolitan Opera for more than 33 seasons, but also sang with great success at London's Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and Milan's La Scala.  He received his early vocal training from Esther Trifari-Paganini and Vincenzo Lombardi. According to most sources, he made his debut at Malta's Theatre Royal in 1889, performing the role of Amonasro in Giuseppe Verdi's Aida. Engagements at various Italian operatic venues ensued and he later gained valuable stage experience singing in Spain, Portugal, Russia and South America (Buenos Aires from 1891 to 1894 and again 1897. Río de Janeiro 1893 and Chile 1898. Also sung in Montevideo) In 1898, he debuted at Italy's most renowned opera house, La Scala, Milan, as Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger. This now seems a surprising choice of role for Scotti because his subsequent career did not encompass the operas of Richard Wagner. Scotti's American debut took place in the autumn of 1899, when he sang in Chicago. On 27 December 1899 he made his first appearance in New York City at the Metropolitan Opera, undertaking the title role in Mozart's Don Giovanni. He would become an audience favorite at the Met, earning acclaim for his graceful singing of Donizetti's bel canto music as well as for the touch of elegance that he brought to his more forceful Verdi and verismo interpretations. Scotti appeared at Covent Garden in London for the first time in 1899, singing Don Giovanni. He would return to London on many occasions prior to World War I. At the Met in 1901, Scotti became the first artist to sing the role of Scarpia in Giacomo Puccini's Tosca in America. He appeared, too, in the American premieres of Francesco Cilea's Adriana Lecouvreur, Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari's Le donne curiose, Umberto Giordano's Fedora, Franco Leoni's L'Oracolo and Isidore de Lara's Messaline. Scotti also sang a variety of mainstream baritone parts during his time at the Met, including Rigoletto, Malatesta, Belcore, Iago, Falstaff, Marcello, and Sharpless in addition to Don Giovanni and Scarpia. He often performed opposite his close friend Enrico Caruso and appeared with the illustrious tenor when he made his Met debut as the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto in 1903. Scotti partnered 15 different Toscas over the course of his long career at the house. In 1912, Scotti's arrival in the United States with Pasquale Amato and William Hinshaw for his next Met season received extensive newspaper coverage. He performed at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, on a regular basis until 1910, with additional appearances in the 1913–1914 season. During this period, he became not only London's first Scarpia but also its first Sharpless in Puccini's Madama Butterfly (in 1900 and 1905 respectively), which he also introduced to the Met in 1907. In 1917, he was elected an honorary member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the American fraternity for male musicians, at the New England Conservatory of Music. Scotti performed in Paris at the Opéra Comique singing Tosca (in 1904 with Emma Eames and Emilio De Marchi, conductor Cleofonte Campanini, and in 1910, with Farrar and Beyle, the young and later-prominent conductor Gino Marinuzzi). In 1910 at Theatre du Châtelet with the Metropolitan ensemble, Scotti sung Falstaff conducted by Arturo Toscanini and at the Opera, in a gala performance, the third act of La bohème with Caruso and Farrar. In 1908, he sang at Salzburg in Don Giovanni, with Lilli Lehmann (Donna Ana), Johanna Gadski (Donna Elvira), Geraldine Farrar (Zerlina), with Karl Muck conducting. He formed his own troupe of singers in 1919, calling it, naturally enough, the Scotti Opera Company. He managed it for several seasons while touring the United States. Scotti celebrated his 25th anniversary with the Met on 1 January 1924 in a gala performance of Tosca. By the 1930s, Scotti's voice had declined considerably but he retained his place on the Met's roster of singers due to his outstanding histrionic ability. His final Met appearance occurred on 20 January 1933, when he sang Chim-Fen in L'Oracolo; he had created the role in 1905. Scotti returned to Italy to spend his retirement. He died in Naples in 1936, aged 70
