Over the past four decades, Minoru Nomata has developed a lexicon of imaginary architectonic and topographical forms to create paintings that transcend specifics of time and place. This book presents a grand overview of his visionary works, which combine the familiar with the mysterious and the heroic with the haunting. It is especially the forms of construction – structural beams, frameworks, tarpaulins, and netting – that are the hallmarks of these fantastical architectures. Notions of the picturesque and sublime combine in Nomata’s later paintings, where the structures seem increasingly fragile, with reduced material volume, greater height, or wrapped in tendril-like scaffolding.

Iron Widow
Iron Widow - Diverse Characters By Xiran Jay Zhao Published 2021 by Penguin Teen
Tumblr media
In a sci-fi retelling of China’s only female emperor, author Xiran Jay Zhao’s Iron Widow. According to the author’s site in description of the book, “The series follows an 18-year-old re-imagining of her as she avenges her sister’s murder by an intensely patriarchal military system that pairs boys and girls up to pilot giant magical mecha…” using chi and the spiritually system of yin and yang, “in which boy pilots are treated like celebrities, while girl pilots must serve as their concubines” (2020).
This has been a stellar hit for YA and Adult audiences alike with Asian/ Chinese identity and culture representation throughout as well as the main character having a disability- needing to use a wheelchair when not in her mech or for longer periods of time-, there being sci-fi elements like mechs and otherworldly creatures, and- the real star- an actual polyamorous relationship. The three members involved in this relationship aren’t fighting in a love triangle but sharing immense compassion and love for one another with the bond only strengthening as the story progresses. We are definitely going to see all of this again in the second installment titled Heavenly Tyrant.
Author Xiran Jay Zhao is masterful in her character development as well as world building in this science fiction best selling gem. It’s rare to see someone with this much strength in creation paying attention to eastern storytelling- as opposed to omnipresent western themes- and doing so in a way that feels very human in a universe so much different from our own.
Not only is her book powerful, but so is the author. Zhao, whether sporting her iconic cow-onesie or an incredibly gorgeous hairstyle and garb, she speaks up for what she believes in and stays true to herself while uplifting her community of writers and readers. You can find her active on a number of social media platforms but she gets a lot of traction on tiktok for her informative news on her and wider spread literary events.
I think this piece, and materials like it hold an amazing place in literature and of course on library shelves. Like author Elizabeth Lim who also writes in fantastical Chinese spaces, Zhao helps bridge the gap for older YA readers into adult fiction. The power of someone able to write for this transitional space shouldn’t be ignored- since this area is so often. People in this stage deserve as much representation as any other reading group and- as previously ranted upon by me in writing, life, and probably in this blog- adult representation doesn’t hold a candle that in YA materials. I am amazed at the diversity in this area of media and that it continues to grow exponentially year after year- take note adult materials publishers and buyers.
As I said, this book couple holds an awesome presence in a display or place celebrating Chinese culture, Chinese writers, and even just the transitional space of older aged or higher level themed YA materials. I look forward to the next installment of this series which I believe is going to be a trilogy and I encourage you to check it out and engage with the author. She has a lot to give readers.

hey! i’m talia (25, pst) and i’m slowly getting myself back into writing following the break that life forced me to take. i’ve mostly roleplayed in groups but in wanting less restrictions and the hope to be able to write more varying stories i’ve decided to jump back into 1x1 and indie rp. i do write on discord but i honestly prefer tumblr. i’m a creature of habit, what can i say?
here are my favorite fcs to use:
priscilla quintana, melisa pamuk, nathalie kelley, ana de armas, yara shahidi, julia dalavia, melissa barrera, kylie bunbury, phoebe tonkin, im jinah, rachel mcadams, jessica chastain, ozge yagiz, alicia vikander, and rebecca rittenhouse
casey deidrick, ryan gosling, kendrick sampson, manny montana, can yaman, chris evans, henry golding, jesse williams, jon bernthal, jamie dornan, paul mescal, lewis tan, and theo james
note: there are more fcs to love this is just the short list and tend to be my go-tos!
when it comes to wanted opposites i am fairly open. i much prefer you use an fc that you have the most muse for. that said, i will happily take any of the fcs listed above as opposites!
if you’d like to interact, please like or comment on this post or shoot me a message! continue reading below the cut for more information including my rules!
writing style: i do use legacy editor and prefer it. however, i am all good with using beta editor should you need to as i understand that not everyone has access to legacy editor. my writing range tends to go from a small paragraph to multiple and i do love the utilization of gifs. i would prefer replies not be excessively formatted and if possible please use small/medium gifs — accessibility!
plotting style: i love to set up a plot and release the muses lol. it’s much more fun to just let the muses figure things out and see where the writing takes us and how things develop and progress naturally. that said, i love tossing around headcanons and setting up backstories and all that good stuff. i prefer not to overly plot. i think random starters and tossing whomever you’re musing in is great fun! its great to see what we can come up with!
characters: i do have a roster of muses that are ready to go and love your muses down. but i am also more than happy and willing to create muses specific to plots!

these are my rules for interacting/writing:
please be 21+
all muses must be 25+
please be patient. i work a full-time job and have my family to take care of so i will be slow to do replies during the week. most of my activity will be on the weekends.
extension of #3 — i tend to do replies in the order i receive them unless i have insane muse for a particular thread and i need to get it done and out of the way because it’s all i can think about. please please please do not assume this means disinterest if i do not do your thread first or if i do replies out of order. muse is weird and these actions do not mean i do not enjoy or love our threads.
communicate! i cannot read your mind and you cannot read mine so i appreciate communication if something is off or wrong or if you have questions or would like to chat and plot about threads. i love talking headcanons too btw so feel free to hit me up any time!
if ever you’re not feeling a thread, muse, connection you have all the right to drop the thread/connection. again, i would appreciate communication or a heads up but i also understand.
i do not chase down replies. if your reply doesn’t show up in my activity or if i’ve missed it on my dash then it will not end up in my drafts. please don’t take this personally. i do not have the time to go hunting for things usually. if you feel a reply was missed i’d appreciate a nudge or a link. that said, i will do my best to stay on top of things!
i have adhd. concentrating and focus is a challenge for me. i can also be forgetful. just a heads up is all.
basically, i love long replies and writing novels back and forth but at the same time they can also overwhelm me fairly easily. i do tend to write long replies but never ever feel the need to match me. write what works for you and your muse.
discord is available upon request!

The metalens meets the stars
Large, all-glass metalens images sun, moon and nebulae.
Metalenses have been used to image microscopic features of tissue and resolve details smaller than a wavelength of light. Now they are going bigger.
Researchers at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) have developed a 10-centimeter-diameter glass metalens that can image the sun, the moon and distant nebulae with high resolution. It is the first all-glass, large-scale metalens in the visible wavelength that can be mass produced using conventional CMOS fabrication technology.
The research is published in ACS Nano.
“The ability to accurately control the size of tens of billions of nanopillars over an unprecedentedly large flat lens using state-of-the-art semiconductor foundry processes is a nanofabrication feat that opens exciting new opportunities for space science and technology,” said Federico Capasso, the Robert L. Wallace Professor of Applied Physics and Vinton Hayes Senior Research Fellow in Electrical Engineering at SEAS and senior author of the paper.
Most flat metalenses, which use millions of pillar-like nanostructures to focus light, are about the size of a piece of glitter. In 2019, Capasso and his team developed a centimeter-scale metalens using a technique called deep-ultraviolet (DUV) projection lithography, which projects and forms a nanostructure pattern that can be directly etched into the glass wafer, eliminating the time-consuming writing and deposition processes that were required for previous metalenses.
DUV projection lithography is commonly used to pattern fine lines and shapes in silicon chips for smartphones and computers. Joon-Suh Park, a former graduate student at SEAS and current postdoctoral fellow in Capasso's team, demonstrated that the technique could not only be used to mass produce metalenses but also increase their size for applications in virtual and augmented reality.
But making the metalens even larger for applications in astronomy and free-space optical communications posed an engineering problem.
“There is a major limitation with the lithography tool because these tools are used to make computer chips, so chip size is restricted to no more than 20 to 30 millimeters,” said Park, co-first author of the paper. “In order to make a 100-millimeter diameter lens, we needed to find a way around this limitation.”
Park and the team developed a technique to stitch together several patterns of nanopillars using the DUV projection lithography tool. By dividing the lens into 25 sections but using only the 7 sections of a quadrant considering the rotational symmetry, the researchers showed that DUV projection lithography could pattern 18.7 billion designed nanostructures onto a 10-centimeter circular area in a matter of minutes. The team also developed a vertical glass etching technique that allows the creation of high-aspect ratio, smooth-sidewall nanopillars etched into glass.
“Using the same DUV projection lithography, one could produce large-diameter, aberration-correcting meta-optics or even larger lenses on larger glass diameter wafers as the corresponding CMOS foundry tools become increasingly available in the industry,” said Soon Wei Daniel Lim, a postdoctoral fellow at SEAS and co-first author of the paper.
Lim played a lead role in the full simulation and characterization of all the possible fabrication errors that could arise during mass-manufacturing processes and how they could impact the optical performance of metalenses.
After addressing possible manufacturing challenges, the researchers demonstrated the power of the metalens in imaging celestial objects.
Mounting the metalens on a tripod with a color filter and camera sensor, Park and the team took to the roof of Harvard’s Science Center. There, they imaged the Sun, the moon and the North America nebula, a dim nebula in the constellation Cygnus about 2,590 light years away.
“We were able to get very detailed images of the Sun, the moon and the nebula that are comparable to images taken by conventional lenses” said Arman Amirzhan, a graduate student in the Capasso Lab and co-author of the paper.
Using only the metalens, the researchers were able to image the same cluster of sunspots as a NASA image taken that same day.
The team also demonstrated that the lens could survive exposure to extreme heat, extreme cold and the intense vibrations that would occur during a space launch without any damage or loss in optical performance.
Because of its size and monolithic glass composition, the lens could also be used for long-range telecommunications and directed energy transport applications.
The research is co-authored by Hyukmo Kang, Karlene Karrfalt, Daewook Kim, Joel Leger, Augustine Urbas, Marcus Ossiander and Zhaoyi Li. It was supported by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Grant No. HR00111810001 and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research under Award No. FA9550-22-1-0312.

Crowds that are funded = CrowdFunds
I love creating content. I also love putting out content for my 162 subscribers on YouTube, if it is still at 162 subs. I can still manage it on my own. But what about content creators who are growing and aren't really sponsored by certain brands? Now if you asked me and my opinion, crowdfunding can be an effective tool when it comes to helping building a community for the creative minds. Platforms like Patreon, Ko-Fi helped artists, graphic designers, beginners or professional filmmakers (who aren't tied to a huge distribution company, singer-songwriters, chefs, bakers, and also content creators to not only help fund their projects, or continue to keep their brands alive, but to also allow them to connect directly with their audiences/subscribers, and build a community around their work.
Before we get into the question does crowdfunding actually help content creators or those in the creative industry, let's get a little into what crowdfunding is. In an article translated to English originally published by Greek author Zorica Golić in 2014, Golić has states that crowdfunding has become this alternative financing option, especially for projects that struggle to obtain loans from traditional sources like banks or investors. Dannberg, T. describes crowdfunding is a form and part of crowd sourcing, and the typical user of a crowd sourcing platform is described as a middle to old, middle to upper-class, highly educated, married white man with high-speed internet connection.
Other than being a platform to help fund content creators, these crowdfunding platforms also serves as something that motivates creators and contributes to a sense of community. Additionally, crowdfunding helps build a sustainable fan base by connecting with backers, turning them into long-term supporters, as stated by Dannberg, T., 2017. But with it’s positive look, it also has this negative outlook to it. Now with the attention of social media, it has brought not only the interest but also scrutiny when it comes to crowdfunding as stated by Chin, Jones, McNutt & Pebler, 2014. Furter explained by Chin, Jones, McNutt & Pebbler, this draws criticism on duped funders, projects done by celebrities and movie studios whose main motive is to continue on exploiting their fans and audiences into funded projects they themselves can fund.
Examples I can see from my own personal observations The Try Guys, Watcher, while both were part of Buzzfeed, people associated with the company like Eugene Lee Yang, Zack Kornfeld, Keith Habersberger (Try Guys), or Ryan Bergara, Shane Madej, and Steven Lim (Watcher) eventually branched out and started their own companies. As someone who used to subscribe to The Try Guys' patreon, these crowdfunding sites allows fans to view scenes that were not included in their uploaded content on YouTube, early access to more videos or videos scheduled for release from days to a week ahead, or ability to have their feedback and suggestions taken by these content creators for their future content. Another example would be PBS Eons. People who subscribed to their Patreon would be given a shoutout at the end of the videos, but it depends on the rankings of contents they chose to subscribe. But these businesses had already gained a number of exposure, fans and followers that getting the financial support for crowdfunding wouldn’t really be an issue. So take a look on Jon Widegren. Widegren planned on traveling across the United States to really enjoy as well as getting inspiration from burger joints he visited. Widegren spent 3 more months in the States before returning to Stockholm and got to work on he’s new project, Flippin’ Burgers, which was a success thanks to crowdfunds.
In conclusion, does crowdfunding helps the creative industry and community? Yes. Yes it does. I’ve seen it help my friends who were art students who used Ko-Fi, Patreon to help fund their budget to fund their art supplies. And it has also helped me as a writer. I get paid to write certain stories on platforms like Tumblr for fans and in turn, I would be given small donations in my Ko-Fi account to help me financially and my research for any of these stories I’ve been commissioned to write.
