F or L for the fanfic asks? Sorry if you already answered those and I missed it!
thank you kindly for the ask!
F: Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.
"Fine," Wylan says, keeping his eyes open despite his instinct to close them, to look away from the predator in the room with him. "But try to see this, Mr. Brekker: the body of the son of a councilman washes up, pale and bloated, in the harbor. My father puts on a show. His beloved child, his only son, struck down by Barrel thugs." Wylan takes a deep breath, not daring to pause long enough to allow Brekker to speak or for himself to feel the way his stomach is turning in circles or his palms are sweating. "And maybe that's not enough for him to make any lasting changes to the Barrel. Not yet. But he starts a campaign, a morally righteous one. If his son, the poor simple Van Eck heir, could die to the violence of the city, whose children are safe? All over Ketterdam, law-abiding mothers will hold their children tighter and beg their husbands to listen. What has life in Ketterdam become, that a boy like the Van Eck kid could die in the streets?" Brekker shifts in his chair, either uncomfortable from sitting or from Wylan's words, and Wylan doesn't care which. He's built a head of steam now, because this is what his father will do. Wylan knows that. Never let a good tragedy go to waste. Poor, grieving Jan Van Eck and his poor, simple son. Deficient and so trusting. Killed in his prime. "My father will weep over my body in the Church of Barter, and establish a fund," Wylan barrels on, the scene sunlit and cold in his mind. "They'll pass a criminal justice reform law in my memory. Maybe they'll call it Wylan's Law, who knows? It will mean more stadwatch, surely. Better detectives. The fund will pay them so they're in my father's pocket and not yours. Suddenly, the people in the Zelver district will start calling for curfews for the Barrel, to keep the riff raff out of their neighborhood. Did you hear, the Van Eck boy was seen on Zelverstraat the night he died?" Wylan has no idea when he last went to the Zelver district, but it doesn't matter. What matters is rumor, insinuation. What matters is what they'll say he did. And his father will make sure everyone is saying what he wants. "And my father's power will grow. His rich friends will want to be seen as pious and good, so they'll support him even as his fist closes. And you, well. How many people saw me being led to your office tonight? When my face goes up on the posters advertising Wylan's Law — protecting your children from crime and immorality — how many people will recognize me as someone who was meeting with you days before my death? How will your bosses feel, when they put it together that you could have stopped this? How will your fellows feel when they're being run out of business because Kaz Brekker couldn't see the point of helping one boy?"
Rather a long snippet, but this is the scene in anticipation of light where Wylan convinces Kaz to help him. I love the thought process here, because I have listened to just SO MUCH Knowledge Fight that it's almost beat-for-beat what Alex Jones would accuse his imaginary enemies of doing. Use a tragedy to consolidate power. And Wylan is smart and observant, I have to believe that he knows the kind of man his father is. Especially in this world where he overheard the plan to kill him before it was set off. A Wylan who lurks outside of doors would have heard his father talking like this, and know how to emulate it.
I also really like to imagine what Kaz is thinking in this part - I imagine Kaz as someone who is looking for people who will give him a reason to help them. And he finds it in this monologue. He won't do charity and he doesn't need a demo man, but he can sell harboring this boy for this reason, and he's relieved to have a reason to do it.
And it is a moment that brings the truth of Wylan and Kaz being drift compatible (they are, this is my hill and I am dying here!) to the fore- they get each other, and in different circumstances they could easily be each other.
L: How many times do you usually revise your fic/chapter before posting?
Honestly, I do a lot of editing as I go. I'll reread before I start writing and adjust little bits here and there. So by the time I'm ready to post, I need a beta and then I ask text-to-speech to read it to me to catch typos and weird phrasing, and I'm pretty ready to go. Not an involved process, because I do most of it ahead of time.

27, 28, 29 for fic writers meme
How do you feel about collaborations?
Honestly, I've only published a collaborative fic once, but I'd love to do more in the future! I feel like two or more (compatible) writers can, inevitably, iterate faster and produce better quality work than a single person ever could on their own. Definitely open to collab more in the future, should those opportunities present themselves.
Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.
Ooh wow. This is a tough one...
I love @thefudge's work, and have for literal years, now. At over 300 published works, her range and speed to publish is honestly astonishing. Anytime I find my interest piqued by a crackship in any piece of media I've just consumed, I know Dr.Fudge will already be there providing some good fucking FOOD. She's got a great way of capturing understated truths in a gorgeous, succinct way. Also, her single-handed invention of Hollywood Gothic as a twisted little subgenre of its own is awe-inspiring, really.
@your-girl-is-lovely has been my partner in truly absurd thoughtcrimes for QUITE some time now and she knows it. she's got the kind of storytelling skills that are beyond impressive -- reset's use of a non-linear narrative lives rent-free in my head to this DAY. it's rare to find someone whose work truly evolves in every single piece, and yet, she always manages it.
(also, i'm reminded that you wrote kaz/alina and wow, iconic)
Finally, I'm consistently amazed by @linearao3's work. It's gorgeous, it's horny, there's LAYERS to it, every damn time. Some people truly never miss and I'm convinced LinearA is one of those people. The attention to detail - costuming, language choices, what-have-you - is incredible.
If you could write the sequel (or prequel) to any fic out there not written by yourself, which would you choose?
Oh gosh. I believe someone else did actually end up writing a sequel to this, but I was obsessed with save the undone years. I would've happily written a sequel to this too, albeit with way less plot and a lot more horny, bc I'm a simple girl and the way kanej got together in ~this particular scenario~ really tickled me.

I have been thinking about @linearao3 ‘s Delft blue ceramics (or “Gezhelt” in this case!) inspired dress Inej wears in their fic Served Me Well FOR MONTHS. Such a fun fic and concept, I just had to draw it!!! Her pose here is based on The Reluctant Bride by Auguste Toulmouche which I think fits Inej’s quite well. (Just imagine the handmaidens in the painting are there as the Ravkan elite, I didn’t wanna distract from Inej 😅) Reference under the cut!

Jealousy | A Six of Crows Animatic
Criminal Kaz Brekker asks his righthand woman Inej to join him on a heist to pose as a mistress of an ambassador they are trying to expel. But under the surface, Inej struggles to understand why Kaz has asked her to join on the mission, while Kaz refuses to admit his true feelings for her.
I made animatic based off the kanej fan fiction “Serves You Right” Chapter 5 By LinearA @linearao3. Even though we can’t get soc spinoff, I’ll make fan stuff still!
Also, I got into animation grad school and this was for a storyboarding class :)
-
So this is what I’ve been working for the past month. Was really hard to keep this a secret after Shadow and Bone cancelled. An ode to one of my all time favorite chapters of a fanfic. The visuals still stick with me now and it begs to be turned cinematic.
For this storyboard, I edited some lines to make it more accessible to wider audience than soc and. Did lots of research on opera and tried to choose songs roughly in 17th century. So fun to make a soundtrack with whatever I wanted tho :)

You can see a broadview on my website
Or in slidedeck form.
You can also view on youtube.

tagged in WIP Wunday (I guess it's Wonday now?) by @dont-offend-the-bees! at the time I was in the rare position of having zero active WIPs but a few days later I was possessed by the singularly deranged idea of a BEOWULF AU hwĂŠt up y'all it's time to Make Anglo-Saxons Gay Again
(with apologies to Maria Dahvana Headley)
Bruv, tell me we still know how to speak of heroes! In the old days, the bold days, everyone knew what real men were: a bloke could bootstrap his way out of a basement with no blazon to his blood, beat down every bench-brother who stepped up to bat, splinter-swing his way to glory till every mouth north and south of the whale-road carried his name. He rode hard, they’d say! He stayed thirsty! That was a man! That was a good man. “That’s all very well,” says the lord of the hall, “but who the hell are you?” Every head in the hall turns to look at the stranger in their midst, the lad with the borrowed sword and the burnished skin. His armour’s too big, his helm don’t fit right, yet there’s a history of violence tattooed in the scars on his knuckles. He grins like he’s got God’s candle gripped between his teeth. “The name’s Charles, son of Rowland, and the party don’t start till I walk in.” “He mocks us, my lord Simon!” comes the shout from the floor. “He makes light of our nightmare!” “Look, mate, everyone knows Hilarion Hall is cursed. They’re swapping stories up and down the swan-road about the horror that haunts you. You’ve got a monster, they say. Bit naff, innit? Bunch of strapping blokes like yourselves, cowed by some creature in the dark?” Hollering in the hall, hammering on mead-benches, hands on hilts. Lord Simon rises, raises a hand for silence.  “It is true we are plagued by a fiend out of hell, a marsh-marauder, an outcast exiled from the light of Heaven. The sound of God-fearing men raising their voices in revelry drives him into a devouring rage. He is monstrous to look upon, and his skin turns any blade. The man who brings me his head shall sit at my right hand, receive from me the rarest rings.” “Brills,” says Charles. “I’ll kill your monster.”
thanks for the tag Newt! I tag (with no pressure, and apologies for any double-tagging!) @wordsinhaled (who has Enabled me horribly), @dearheartdont, @likemmmcookies, @tumblerislovetumblerislife, @c-rowland, @linearao3, @leupagus, @justplainsalty, @eisoj5, and anyone else who might find sharing a bit of writing helpful in these present times.

This was my second binding and casing of "Kohelet 3:16 (Call Me a Cab) by @linearao3
It is, without a doubt, one of my favorite pieces of fiction in any fandom. The use of Judaism and liberation work as plot and setting for a modern Star Wars AU is just...ugh, it. is. so. good. Everyone's queer, everyone's Jewish, the author provides helpful and detailed author's notes (formatted for printing as footnotes with a couple of appendices) to give context. It's just exceptional.
It was the second binding and casing because I'd typeset it before I understood, y'know, margins. I was also attempting to impose it myself because I'm a fool. These days I rely heavily on bookbinder js because I love myself. I'll eventually put up some pictures of the first bind because it was a good lesson. I will also probably re-bind it (again) because the colophon info isn't correct, specifically regarding the inclusion of end page art. I wound up not including GizSkyriser's piece (found right here, it's so good, please go look and tell them how good it is) since my printer isn't capable of edge-to-edge printing. My plan is to use it on the book jacket that I'm still designing. Furthermore, the colors of the text bubbles were kind of wonky upon printing, so I'll need to reassess that.
I used pomegranates on the cover due to their important symbolism in Judaism, particularly in the Sephardic tradition and their use during Rosh Hashanah. Often associated with the concept of righteousness, pomegranates are said to have 613 seeds, which correspond to the 613 mitzvot of the Torah.
I used an image of Lady Justice on the title page for similar reasons, given the themes of the work.
There are several less put together projects between "Do Not Go Gentle" and "Kohelet," but these are the photos I have on hand. I say that, because I'm really very pleased with how this turned out. I had a vision and I (more or less) executed it to the best of my ability, having precisely zero useful graphic design skills. Still, there are things I want to change/update as I get better at typesetting, so I imagine there will be another post about a different iteration of this in the future.

AO3 Wrapped 2024
Thanks for the tag, @onthewaytosomewhere! See their post here.
Tumblr media
Comparing the overall flat view stats to the ones for 2024 is a fun comparison. I do love that my most popular fic overall is Geliefde, for a number of reasons.
While my volume of words posted for 2024 has been HUGE, I have also found myself slowing down on output in the second half of this year. Lots on my plate, and working more thoughtfully on my writing. I do have a slew of WIPs and ideas in the works, but it might take a bit to get them all done and published. I do hope to get Vakantie up before the end of the year, hopefully around the holiday break. Then y'all can look forward to more stories in 2025. Writing fan fic helps keep me sane, so it's going to keep being a part of my life.
Shoutout to not only the SOC fandom, but ALL of my writer peeps for support and tagging and general awesomeness.
Link to all my works for those in need.
Soft tagging @intosnarkness, @hotpinkmurex, @cameliawrites, @linearao3, and anyone else who wants to do one of these.

11 for the fic game!
Thank you for the ask!
11. Is there anything important in your fic you think readers have missed/overlooked?
If readers miss something, that’s on me for not writing it right. I think I was slightly too subtle about one specific thing in Adding On Weight- people seemed to think Inej just wanted to give Kaz gifts for funsies.
But she very specifically gives him things he asks for because she wants him to want things. His whole arc is about him learning that he’s allowed to want and reclaiming his agency. A book on card tricks, gloves, a painting, a million cups of coffee. If one were to go back and check, he either outright asks for all of those things or implies he wants them at some point, and she gets them for him.
Her desire to give him what he asks for takes us from "I don't get to want anything. Wanting is a poison. ... I don't know what it is you want from me, but I'd advise you to forget it before it gets you killed." In chapter 2 to Kaz telling her he wants to stay with her in chapter 14 and then actually enforcing a boundary for the first time.

Some SoC Kanej recs for @tlonista because I kept hitting the comment character limit on the post where we were talking about this and am now just putting them into a single place. (This also would have gone faster if I hadn't stopped to read every time I grabbed a link out of my bookmarks and lost the comment on the small internet.)
Incredible Prose, set in more or less canonverse:
a tall ship, and a star to steer her by, by @whatanybodygets (whitherward on ao3): Gorgeous prose and complicated emotions. Inej goes to sea and it's everything she wants and nothing like she expects.
roomy, and drenched in sunlight, also by @whatanybodygets. Inej and Kaz have a baby, but this isn't your niece's babyfic. Complicated, ugly, beautiful, these two fucking morons cannot talk to each other to save their lives.
Stories About Crows, by @marycontraire: A series that is by turns fun, touching, silly, heartbreaking, and realistic. Mary understands the importance of water rights and has a brilliant mind for looking at the shit that Leigh Bardugo made up and taking it to its logical conclusion. Top notch worldbuilding, fab writing.
Service Work, by @linearao3: LinearA's filthy (affectionate), kinky, and gorgeous series, in which she tricks her readers into caring deeply about her beautifully researched fake linguistics. Come for the porn, stay for the fake linguistics and gorgeous prose.
Alternate Universes: I don't know why I find these characters so compelling in AUs, which are not typically my thing, but in looking over my bookmarks, I have a ton of them saved.
save the undone years, by @whatanybodygets (again): Look, just read everything whitherward's written. But this is a WWI battlefield hospital AU and it just hits. It's honestly one of the best things I've read in the fandom.
Murder Ballad and Child Ballad, @linearao3: LinearA's filthy and touching a/b/o series, in which she looked at all of the most interesting parts of a/b/o dynamics, stuck it in the Grishaverse, and world-built like her life depended on it. Want to know what the economics of Ketterdam might look like in between the breeding kink? She's got you covered.
Latte Art, by @pyrrhlc: A coffee shop AU with teeth and one of the few written by someone with barista experience (Kaz spends a shocking, but realistic amount of time doing inventory). The whole series is fun, surprisingly high stakes in places, and one of my favorite modern AUs.
The Four Seasons, by @totchipanda: Slooooooow burn fake dating modern AU done well. Unfinished, but I happen to know that Totchi is still actively working on it. It's by turns a fun romp and an interesting take on modern AUs.
all these hours between us, by CoralAcacia: A college hacker AU, single chapter, but I return to this embarrassingly often. It's well written and nicely poignant in the insane pining.
@capinejghafa is also doing an author rec series here on tumblr where she's making gifs of faves along with posts, and honestly, what a delight that is.

Fic rec ask meme
đŸ‘ŒđŸŒ A fic someone else recommended to you
@linearao3 recommended l’appel du vide on their tumblr - and it was an excellent rec! Canon-divergent Kaz/Inej where they're both just as messed up.
đŸ‘đŸœ A fic you bookmarked recently
Drive You Mild, an old school Star Wars Luke/Mara fic I've been meaning to read for some time (which was also, I think, a rec from @toooldforthisbutstill).

WIP Wednesday
@carolinawrenn thank you for tagging me darling!
“You and Kaz must’ve been like ten then,” Jordie smiles. “You two were pestering me all days long. I was scared shirtless that my boss would catch me red-handed.”
She lays back down, her body parallel to his. Presses her cheek to his pillow's coarse, bare-thread cotton and smells the cheap white soap and sweat.
“You were kind to us,” she sighs wistfully. “You were never too busy or too important to play with us. Never shooed us away like other boys your age. Kaz used to look at you like you hung the moon.”
Something sours Jordie’s smile, turning it into a grimace.
“Yeah,” he says. “He used to.”
tagging (with no pressure whatsoever) @whatanybodygets @linearao3 and @cameliawrites cause i am nosey
