in the modern day i think it's genuinely fucking inexcusable to not have linux versions of apps.
GTK supports linux and has since the beginning
Qt, and wxWidgets is completely cross platform and has been for over 30 years
.NET has supported linux since 2016, with dotnet 8 allowing win32 resources to be compiled on non-windows platforms, and Avalonia is a new replacement for WPF with not much fuss to switch over, and while it's not fully better it's getting there.
Fucking even Electron is cross platform.
For games:
OpenGL, Vulkan, DirectX, OptiX, all work on linux
Unity games can be made to run on linux. Unreal engine games can be made to run on linux despite tim sweeny's shitass. Godot games can be made to run on linux.
id Tech, GoldSrc, Build engine, Source, Source 2, GameMaker Studio, Java, Pygame, Ren'Py, RPG Maker, all work to make linux games

Web to Mobile: Building Seamless Apps with .NET"
.NET is a effective, flexible, and open-supply developer platform created with the aid of Microsoft. It enables the creation of a huge range of applications—from computing device to cellular, net, cloud, gaming, and IoT. Over the years, .NET has evolved substantially and has become one of the maximum extensively used frameworks inside the software improvement enterprise.
Dot Net Programming Language
Tumblr media
A Brief History of .NET
The .NET Framework become first delivered through Microsoft in the early 2000s. The original cause turned into to offer a steady item-oriented programming surroundings regardless of whether code became stored and finished locally, remotely, or via the internet.
Over time, Microsoft developed .NET right into a cross-platform, open-supply framework. In 2016, Microsoft launched .NET Core, a modular, high-performance, cross-platform implementation of .NET. In 2020, the company unified all its .NET technologies beneath one umbrella with the discharge of .NET five, and later persisted with .NET 6, .NET 7, and past.
Today, the unified platform is actually called .NET, and it allows builders to build apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and greater using a single codebase.
Key Features of .NET
1. Cross-Platform Development
One of the maximum tremendous features of present day .NET (publish .NET Core) is its ability to run on a couple of platforms. Developers can construct and deploy apps on Windows, Linux, and macOS with out enhancing their codebases.
2. Multiple Language Support
.NET supports numerous programming languages, together with:
C# – the maximum extensively used language in .NET development
F# – a purposeful-first programming language
Visual Basic – an smooth-to-analyze language, regularly used in legacy programs
This multilingual capability allows developers to pick out the nice language for their precise use cases.
3. Extensive Library and Framework Support
.NET offers a comprehensive base magnificence library (BCL) and framework libraries that aid the whole lot from record studying/writing to XML manipulation, statistics get entry to, cryptography, and extra.
Four. ASP.NET for Web Development
ASP.NET is a part of the .NET platform specially designed for net improvement. ASP.NET Core, the cross-platform model, permits builders to build scalable internet APIs, dynamic web sites, and actual-time packages the usage of technology like SignalR.
5. Rich Development Environment
.NET integrates seamlessly with Visual Studio, one of the most function-wealthy integrated development environments (IDEs) available. Visual Studio offers capabilities together with IntelliSense, debugging tools, challenge templates, and code refactoring.
6. Performance and Scalability
.NET is thought for high performance and scalability, especially with its guide for asynchronous programming using async/wait for and its Just-In-Time (JIT) compilation.
7. Secure and Reliable
.NET presents sturdy safety features, including code get entry to security, role-based protection, and cryptography training. It also handles reminiscence management thru rubbish series, minimizing reminiscence leaks.
Common Applications Built with .NET
1. Web Applications
With ASP.NET Core, builders can create cutting-edge, scalable internet programs and RESTful APIs. Razor Pages and Blazor are technology within ASP.NET Core that help server-facet and purchaser-facet rendering.
2. Desktop Applications
Using Windows Forms or Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), builders can build conventional computing device applications. .NET MAUI (Multi-platform App UI) now extends this functionality to move-platform computer and cellular programs.
3. Mobile Applications
Through Xamarin (now incorporated into .NET MAUI), developers can create native mobile applications for Android and iOS the usage of C#.
4. Cloud-Based Applications
.NET is nicely-acceptable for cloud development, in particular with Microsoft Azure. Developers can build cloud-local apps, serverless capabilities, and containerized microservices the usage of Docker and Kubernetes.
5. IoT Applications
.NET helps Internet of Things (IoT) development, allowing builders to construct applications that engage with sensors and gadgets.
6. Games
With the Unity sport engine, which helps C#, developers can use .NET languages to create 2D, three-D, AR, and VR games.
Components of .NET
1. .NET SDK
The Software Development Kit includes everything had to build and run .NET packages: compilers, libraries, and command-line tools.
2. CLR (Common Language Runtime)
It handles reminiscence control, exception managing, and rubbish collection.
Three. BCL (Base Class Library)
The BCL offers center functionalities including collections, record I/O, records kinds, and extra.
4. NuGet
NuGet is the package manager for .NET. It lets in builders to install, manage, and share libraries without problems.
Modern .NET Versions
.NET five (2020): Unified the .NET platform (Core + Framework)
.NET 7 (2022): Further overall performance enhancements and more desirable APIs
.NET 8 (2023): Continued attention on cloud-native, cellular, and web improvement
Advantages of Using .NET
Cross-platform assist – construct as soon as, run everywhere
Large developer network – widespread sources, libraries, and frameworks
Robust tooling – especially with Visual Studio and JetBrains Rider
Active improvement – backed by using Microsoft and open-source community
Challenges and Considerations
Learning curve – particularly for beginners due to its giant atmosphere
Legacy framework – older .NET Framework tasks aren't like minded with .NET Core or more recent variations without migration
Platform differences – sure APIs or libraries might also behave in a different way throughout operating systems
Getting Started with .NET
To begin growing with .NET:
Install the .NET SDK from the legitimate .NET internet site.
Create a new project: Use the dotnet new command or Visual Studio templates.
Write code: Develop your logic the usage of C#, F#, or VB.NET.

The nightmare is those that stubbornly do nothing, running an unsupported OS. And the latest Windows zero-day confirmed in this week’s Patch Tuesday should give you all the motivation you need not to be in that group. Predictably, CVE-2025-29824 has now made CISA’s rogues’ gallery of known exploited vulnerabilities, with a mandated (for federal employees at least) update deadline of April 29.
This is a “use-after-free vulnerability that allows an authorized attacker to elevate privileges locally” and which Microsoft warns is being exploited in multiple countries around the world, including the U.S. Confusingly, Microsoft’s advisory accompanying Patch Tuesday’s updates seemed to suggest Windows 10 users were missing out on this critical fix. But that’s only for those with outdated versions of the OS.
As Windows Latest told me, “Microsoft put out a confusing advisory that implied that the patch for CVE-2025-29824 isn’t available for Windows 10. The advisory dashboard clearly states that ‘The security update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems and Windows 10 for 32-bit Systems are not immediately available… That only applies to Windows 10 LTSB 2015, and all supported and newer versions of Windows 10, including Pro Edition have been patched.”
But it’s not all good news. Windows Latest has discovered that Microsoft’s latest Windows 10 update “begins testing the removal of one basic feature from the operating system: clock with seconds in the Calendar… I don’t think we’ll go back to how things were originally because Windows 10 isn’t the focus at Microsoft anymore, and it probably won’t consider the feedback."
More worryingly, Windows Latest also warns that “it looks like KB5002700 is completely botched up because it not only breaks Outlook Calendar but also crashes Word and Excel when you try to create a new document or spreadsheet.” This only applies to Office 2016, but “people on Windows 10 typically use it.”
[source]
so not only are they trying to scare tactic us into upgrading to windows 11 right now by trying to make us think we’re not getting major security updates anymore when we are, but they’re stealth breaking windows systems like the clock, outlook, word and excel to pressure us into upgrading sooner rather than later.
tell me why we shouldn’t just move to linux when windows 11 has been known to be unsafe, buggy and causing issues like BSoDs, and even as recently as the end of march it’s still got major reported issues that haven’t been patched out, including issues like potentially blue screen of deathing people trying to play games with easy anti cheat (like dead by daylight or elden ring), which as far as i can tell are still present now in april… trying to fear-monger us into updating asap to something that’s gained a reputation for being dodgy (and bad for gaming on). thanks but no thanks

i don't tend to change things up. i've had the same url since 2012 and the same profile picture since somewhere around 2016? i like stability i guess.
this applies to linux as well. i don't distrohop; all the tinkering i do is to get my existing install to be as "perfect" as i can get it. one day that'll mean patching my screenlocker to look pretty, another day it'll be adding a keyboard shortcut to type grεεκ leττers. (apologies to any greek readers.)
instead of learning stuff for fun on purpose, i only really learn stuff when i get way too hung up on something and spend hours of effort getting around it. i learned git just because a single program was putting its config file in the wrong directory.
is any of this marketable to employers? who knows. i think i wouldn't mind being a ux designer considering how horrible the current ones seem to be at it.

slowly realising microsoft and other tech companies are actually gonna shovel their large language model crap down everyone's throats, and it's gonna end up like microtransactions in 2016 where everyone was making a fuss but through sheer determination they've become normalised and now barely anyone bats an eye cause like, and like the fuck are you going to do?
There's no easy way to go from one OS to another, linux requires basically reinstalling all your programs, not to mention the difficulty curve (I found it impossible to delete a folder that has stuff in it because linux is just like that) and macOS is... not an option at all
I hate what technology has become, I remember watching LGR videos and he'd talk about how exciting it was back in the day when new tech was being created, how it could genuinely innovate in what can be done with computers like the first graphics cards capable of rendering 3d models at runtime, now new technology is a chatbot taking up cpu cycles made to make you dependent on it for everything

A friend of mine asked me recently to detail my Linux setup, and after thinking about it for a bit, I realized that this is essentially a personality quiz for the Linux users I thought I would detail it here as well.
I no longer have a desktop computer at all. I have two older generation "gaming" laptops and three Raspberry Pis. I'm going to go through in the order I got them:
Laptop #1:
[Purchased New in 2016] Acer ROG 7th Gen i7, 16GB Ram, nVidia 1050Ti Mobile, Internal 1TB HDD, external 2TB HDD
This was originally a windows laptop when I got it back in 2016, but in 2021 I was tired of the long windows boot times on the the HDD and was much more familiar with Linux due to several years experience doing webserver admin work.
I use Ubuntu LTS as my base. It's easy, it's well supported, it's well documented, and the official repos have just about everything I could need. The only thing I've really had to add myself is the repo for i3, but we'll get to that in a bit. I also chose Ubuntu because I already had my first two Raspberry pis, and both were running Raspbian, so using a debian based kernal meant that it wouldn't be much of a change when ssh'ing into them.
That said, I've never really liked the default Ubuntu desktop. Gnome3 is slow and full of too many effects that don't look especially nice but are still heavy to execute. Instead I loaded up KDE plasma. You can download Kubuntu and have them to the setup for you, but I did it the hard way because I found out about Plasma after installing Ubuntu and didn't want to start from scratch.
My plasma desktop looks like this:
Tumblr media
Of my two laptops, this one is in the best shape. It's the one that I usually take with me on trips. With the dedicated GPU it can do some light gaming (it did heavier gaming on windows, but due to emulation layers the performance is just a little worse these days, Linux gaming isn't perfect), the screen hinge has never been an issue, and it's on the lighter side of gaming laptops (which is not to say that it's light). For that reason, I often find myself actually using it on my lap, in airports, at people's houses, on my own couch typing this up.
For this reason, I started looking into ways to better keep my hands on the keyboard, rather than having to drift down to the track pad, which is my least favorite part of this laptop. During that research I discovered i3. If you're not familiar i3 is a Linux Desktop Environment that is entirely keyboard driven. https://i3wm.org/
Tumblr media
To be fair, it's less of a desktop environment and more of a keyboard driven window manager, as it doesn't have a "desktop" per se. Instead when you log into it, you simply get a black status bar at the bottom of the screen. It doesn't even black out the login screen, so if you don't know what to look for, you might think the whole thing has hung. But, the big benefit of this is that the whole thing is lighting fast for a DE. It doesn't waste any resources on effects or really anything that you don't need. But it's really nice for window tiling and task switching without having to get the mouse involved. This is great for productivity (if you're into that), but it's also just convenient for working on a gaming laptop, which might be balanced such that if you take your hands off of it, it might topple off your lap.
This laptop is my primary project computer. It has all my git repos and scripts for doing things like renewing my website's ssl certs. I also run game servers on it for Minecraft. I'm probably going to spin up a Valheim server on it in the near future too. Especially now that the process has improved somewhat.
Raspberry Pi #1:
[Gifted New in 2016] Raspberry Pi 3b, 4GB RAM, 32GB SD card
This one is my oldest RPi. It's had a lot of roles through the years, including an early version of the vogon media server during initial development in 2020. It's run headless Raspbian for a good three or four years now. Currently it's configured as a web server/php scripted web crawler and a pi-hole DNS server. My router currently refuses to use it as a DNS server without bringing the whole network down, but I will on occasion manually switch devices to it when I'm running especially ad-ridden applications.
There's not too much to say about this one. It's stable, I almost never have problems with it. I frequently use it for things that I want running in the background because they'll take too long and I don't want them blocking up one of my other computers.
Laptop #2
[Gifted Used in 2020] Asus Predator 7th Gen i7, 16GB Ram, nVidia 1080 Mobile, 2 internal 256GB SSDs, External 2TB HDD
This one runs windows 10 still. I use this primarily for gaming. The screen hinge is an absolute joke, and replacing it involves replacing the entire screen bezel assembly, which I can absolutely do, but is such a pain that I haven't gotten around to it in the 3 years I've owned this laptop.
There's nothing really special about this one, other than that when both laptops are at my desk, I use a KVM switch to swap my external monitor, keyboard, and trackball between the two computers.
Raspberry Pi #2:
[Gifted New in 2020/21] Raspberry Pi 4b, 4GB Ram, 16GB SD card, 2 120GB USB Sticks, External 2TB HDD
This is my media server. I got it for Christmas 2020 (or 2021, I don't actually remember which because 2020 was a hard hard year). It runs Rasbian, the full OS, with the desktop environment disabled from booting via the command line. It runs PHP 8.2, MariaDB, Apache2, and MiniDLNA to serve the content via my Vogon Media Server.
If you can't tell from the above storage, I'm running the USB ports well past the power delivery they are rated for. The webserver and OS are on the internal storage, so functionally this just means that sometimes the media disappears. I need to build a migration script to put the contents of the two USB sticks on the external storage, as there is more than enough room, and if I can put the HDD in an enclosure with dedicated power, that will solve the issue. But that's at least a hundred dollars of expense, and since the server only has 1, maybe two users at a time, we've been limping along like this for a few years now.
Raspberry Pi #3:
[Purchased New in 2023] Raspberry Pi 4b, 8GB Ram, 16GB SD card
This is the newest Pi. Work gave me a gift card as a bonus for a project recently, so after weighing the pros and cons of getting a VR headset, I settled on setting up a retro gaming tv box. Currently it's running Batocero Linux and loaded up with classic game roms up through the PSX. Though, I would really like to use it as a tv client for the media server. I've upgraded the devices in the living room recently, and there's no longer a dedicated web browser we can use without hooking up one of our laptops. I've got a spare 128GB SD card in the office, so I'm strongly considering getting a wireless mouse and keyboard and setting it up to dual boot between Batocero (which is convenient because it can be navigated with just a controller), and Raspbian. I think I'd set Batocero as the default in Grub, and then if I want to use Raspbian I'd need to have the keyboard handy anyway.
Maybe I'll get one of those half-sized keyboards with the trackpad built in.
Speaking of controllers. I use an 8BitDo Pro 2 controller, and I've been super happy with it since purchase: https://www.8bitdo.com/pro2/
So that's the setup. I have entirely too many computers for any one person, but I included the dates when I got them to show that a number of these have been around for a long time, and that part of the reason I have so many now is that I've put a lot of time into ongoing maintenance and repurposing.
If you've read this far, I'd love to hear about your setups. You don't have to reblog this, but please tag me if you detail yours.

I have been trying to get Ghouls and Jewels to work on and off for several months now and found your masterpost today, the added info that it was designed for Android 8 was helpful, I had been trying to run it on 5, but unfortunately no dice.
It installs, opens, gets stuck on the start screen before loading any buttons or text, music is playing, but can't do anything.
I remember this being the exact problem that caused me to uninstall the game back in the day. Some update (or lack of) had bricked it.
Any clues on how to get it to run? I'm using Genymotion (Linux user)
Usually, when an older game isn't loading in correctly, it's a combination of the game running off ancient Google Play Services libraries, trying to connect to a 3rd party app (i.e. Log into Facebook to save your progress), or trying to connect to a now dead server.
It seems like your problem is running a new Google Play Services. GPS is the app that comes pre-installed on (almost) all Android devices that controls Google Mobile Services. GMS is a kinda 'template' that most Mobile devs use to build notifications, access the internet ect.Devs don't necessarily NEED to use GMS but if they dont want to build a notifications system from scratch it's what they'd use. About every 5 android versions there's a big update to all the software that comes pre-installed on an Android including Google Play Services. This breaks a lot of old games that dont get updates anymore. This way they breakold apps is when Permission requests (i.e. the Uber app asking fo use your location) ask for something critical to game functionality. They usually load in 2nd, after the menu, but before more complex things (i.e. opening cutscenes) Ghouls and Jewels is asking permission to use storage but with Android 8 libraries and has no idea how to communicate with Android 15, which is what your emulator is using.
To solve the problem try running Android 7 to 10. Most emulators don't support old Android versions, so try either rooting your device (if you don't know how don't attempt it, it's very easy to mess up and have your phone reduced to a paperweight) or set up a virtual machine or try to install 2016 to 2019 versions of the Google Play Services APK.

Our #MedTeam along with the academe came to the conclusion that using an Open-Source OS, specifically #Ubuntu is most required as the operational environment in our day-to-day work/activites. In it's cruciality, #OpenSource is prime. #Linux
Tumblr media
Industry Issue:
What we advocate: running Ubuntu Asahi (dual-boot with MacOS) on the latest M4 Mac Mini and the bigger Mac Pro
youtube
Tumblr media
For a laptop variant we advise the 13-inch 2016/2017 Macbook Pro with the older Intel Core processor. Confer to the actual Ubuntu OS.
Tumblr media
In using a Tablet we suggest the Samsung S9 FE/FE+ with Linux OS Terminal installed through the Termux Android application and paired with a BT keyboard

I need to build myself a new PC, so I have been looking at PC components a lot, and I've made a list of things I'm probably gonna buy. I still need to do a bit more research over somethings, but I was already aware that it's gonna be an expensive project. BUT if I invest on this properly now, then I might not need to upgrade the PC that soon and it might last for the next 10 years, and I could just replace some components if I e.g. get a motherboard that won't go old in just the next two years.
I built my current PC in 2016, and iirc the CPU is from the high-end of the CPUs that fit the current motherboard, so updating just the CPU is not possible with this computer. Plus I still have Windows 7, and I think this motherboard might support Win10, but not Win11, and at this point they are starting to stop the support for even Win10 so there's no point in updating to that if it will anyway be too old for everything in a couple of years.
And this is actually what my main point is: I don't mind spending a bit more money on a PC if it means it will run my video games and will fit my video editing career plans, because I know that what comes to computers, with money you get quality. The sum I'm looking at right now is somewhere around 600-700€ which in itself is a lot, but it's still half the price of a ready-made computer that you don't need to build yourself.
But what gets on my nerves is that I should get the OS. And I looked Win11 up and it can cost up to 150€??? More if it's the pro version. And like... why the fuck are these so expensive??? I'm also wondering whether I could pirate Win11 and get a working version somewhere, because know that in my family we have had Windows OS's since the 90s and I don't think a single one of them was actually bought to the household. Maybe Win95 or Win98 was original, but anything from XP up was pirated for sure. My Win7 is also a pirated copy my dad downloaded and installed to my PC (in general he taught me to pirate and use torrents back in the day when torrents were still a thing).
My laptop came with a pre-installed Win10 so I don't have a key or anything for it but it's still registered; and my previous laptop came with the installation CD for Windows Vista. That's probably the only time I've had a computer with an original installation disc for a Windows.
But yeah, the point of this post? Looking at the cheapest CPU options and them being 200€ at the cheapest makes me go "yeah that makes sense, it's a reasonable price for a brand-new CPU that comes with a fan", and then I look at Win11 that is basically just a random activation code on paper and perhaps a link (unless you buy the DVD version which may or may not cost more than a digital one), and it comes with a price tag of 150€ or more. Insane. That's the only product that makes me feel like in no way am I gonna pay THAT MUCH for just an OS!
(And no, Linux and such are not an option for me who likes to play video games a lot and do things that should work without emulators or all kinds of extra work. I've got ADHD stuff already requires some extra work from me to get even normal things started, so I don't need any extra steps there...)

A Sneak Peek Into Abalon Arena: Try Now On Steam
Tumblr media
Abalon Arena demo for the multiplayer cards tactics game is live for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. Thanks to the creative geniuses at D20Studios for bringing this experience to life. Available to try now on Steam. The new Abalon Arena demo just hit Linux for the Steam Next Fest until February 12th. It's a breath of fresh air and I've been eagerly waiting for this since I first heard about it. Abalon has been in the making since 2016, and it's clear that the developers are taking player feedback seriously since day one. Remember diving into Hero Mages back in 2009, it's amazing to see how far the devs have come. Their goal to encapsulate the thrill of table RPGs, miniature tactics, and card strategy into a streamlined, accessible experience is ambitious. From what I've seen, it's brilliantly executed. The demo is a glimpse into what's possible with Abalon Arena. The custom game lobby feature is a standout. You can create or join rooms on the multiplayer cards tactics server, with up to 4 players in various formats like 1v1, 2v2, or FFA. It's both PvP and co-op friendly, so whether you're up for a challenge against real players or just want to team up against bots, there's something for everyone. The concept of the 'room vibe' is unique. Since it lets you set the tone of the match, attracting either beginners or pros, depending on your mood or skill level. Plus, you can jump into custom player-made maps, which adds a nice community driven aspect. Rooms have a unique 5-letter code for easy invites and joining, and up to 40 spectators can watch and wait for their turn to jump in. And if you're more into private matches, setting up a password protected room is easy.

For the card game enthusiasts, here's the best part: all cards are unlocked in the Abalon Arena demo. This means you can get straight into crafting strategies without worrying about unlocking cards or dealing with F2P gimmicks. It's all about creativity and strategy, which I believe is the core of a solid multiplayer cards tactics experience. Deck creation is another great feature. While there are pre-built All-star teams, you're encouraged to mix things up and build your own. Abalon Arena a great way to experiment and find synergies that work for you in the demo. The 2v2 matches are epic! The turn timer options, especially the recommended 30 seconds, keep the gameplay dynamic and engaging. However, it's worth noting what's not in the Abalon Arena demo. The AI 3.0 Engine, Async Multiplayer, Cooperative Ladders, Battle Log, Ranked PvP, Leaderboards, and Achievements are still in the works. So, expect some odd AI behavior and sync issues for now, but these are all on the roadmap. Join the Discord as well. Abalon Arena is shaping up to be a game-changer and the demo is just a taste. But it's already clear that this title has huge potential. I'm keen to see how it evolves and can't wait for the full release. If you're into strategy, card titles, or just looking for a fun multiplayer experience, definitely give it a try. Available on Steam for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC.

this cat will occasionally reblog porn, and other sexual content.
do with that what you will; if you're a minor, maybe it's worth staying away.
anyways, i am the Queen of Bad Opsec. there's backstory to the name. ppl close to me may ask about it.
she/her are my pronouns. my age is greater than or equal to 19. (i used to update this number, until i remembered that putting that sorta info on a public website i dont control is a bad idea maybe.)
this cat will sometimes refer to itself as "this cat". she likes saying that, and . i mean, call a cat a cat, am i right?
@ all my mutuals: i suggest you go make a cohost. if shit hits the fan even more than it already has, that's where i'll be. welp, nevermind. cohost died first.
this cat is discovering the joy of colored text. please bear with me.
this cat is some flavor of trans. maybe she was a boy once, but she can't say that with certainty anymore. this cat learned the word "demigirl" recently, and is slowly rotating it in her mind. she likes the sound of "girlthing".
also, this cat is probably bi. or maybe pan? maybe she'll figure that out one day, hehe.
in any case, its gender is such that every sex with it is gay :3
this cat uses Linux. this cat will tell you to also use Linux. this is because windows is shite, macos is restrictive, and chromeos is both, plus google. big tech is a fuck, go use linux today. viva la FOSS.
in the past, this cat used Arch Linux (btw). this cat will not recommend you use Arch Linux (btw), because Arch Linux is annoying (btw). this cat just happens to tolerate, and occasionally even enjoy, those annoyances. if you're new to linux, go use pop!os. if it werent for snap, i'd recommend ubuntu, but even putting aside issues of dated packages, why the fuck would anyone want more than one default package manager? it kinda defeats the purpose a little bit.
central configurations, my beloved.
update: this cat has installed NixOS on its laptop. she likes!
this cat loves tiling window managers. it used gnome once, but abandoned that long ago in favor of i3wm, and eventually cast that aside when it found swaywm and realized it wouldnt have to deal with picom anymore. now, this cat gets to deal with the lacking software support for Wayland in certain critical areas (screen sharing is .bad) instead. this cat has heard of dwm and hyprland and a few others, and is a lil curious what all the hype's about, but lacks the energy to do the research. for now, she loves the rectangular simplicity of sway. she loves the low-effort nature of windows that just neatly tile side by side where you tell them to be, and wonders how she ever put up with floating window systems at all.
but recently, this cat has been missing the ..tinkerability of Arch. nixos can be an infrastructure tarpit.
(but flakes + direnv are still pretty fucking nice)
this cat plays video games. games it likes / has liked are balatro, Celeste, SUPERHOT (MCD too), FTL (esp with Multiverse), Into the Breach, Minecraft, Satisfactory, the Metro series, Astroneer, ULTRAKILL, Dungeon of the Endless, Cyberpunk, Doom (2016 and Eternal, mostly Eternal) and Planetside 2. and more probably, but i forgor. want to play Highfleet sometime, bc i love the OST (Tanc a Lelek my beloved)
Current video games: FTL (with Multiverse), occasionally some Deep Rock Galactic

I had a good week. There's some cbz/Ugoira follow-up, nicer system:time parsing, and much better boot error-handling.
full changelog
highlights
The CBZ/Ugoira stuff last week went ok! We had a few too many false positive Ugoiras, so that test is tightened up, and those files should soon become CBZs. For false positive CBZs (i.e. just a zip of CG images or similar), we don't have a good automatic solution, but I still plan to roll out 'force this file to be this filetype' tech in future so we can, amongst other things, assign these fixes manually.
The various 'system:archived since xxx' predicates' parsing is now plugged into the same excellent date parser we are using in the downloader system. If you type them in, they'll now take all sorts of date phrasing. Try 'since 01/05/2016' or 'before june 2022' into the autocomplete--you may even be able to use your own language!
There is still a little work to do with the 'since/before x time units ago' variants, though. In some unclear cases (including foreign languages), the before/since may be flipped to what you type. Also, I have decided to soon migrate these predicates to just store days and hours (no more year/month). You can still enter '1 year ago' with this new parser, but on my end, trying to calculate leap years and weird month durations has caused too many problems, so I am going to simply pull back over the near future and let you put 365 or 30 in yourself! In any case, give this stuff a go and let me know how you get on.
When the hydrus client fails to boot really early on, before the main UI system is live, it should now nonetheless pop up a dialog saying what happened! The only way this will fail is if the problem with the boot is the Qt UI library, lol. In either case, the 'hydrus_crash.log' file is still made on your desktop.
After talking it out with users, I have decided to move towards dropping the image library OpenCV from the program. It has served us well, but it is often difficult to install and a bloat, and our flexible alternative, Pillow, works extremely well these days. I'm not ready to flick the switch yet, but we have done work here and there, and if you would like to help me test this out, please hit the 'IN TESTING: Load images with PIL' checkbox under options->media and let me know if you have any images that suddenly load incorrectly.
The String Splitter and Joiner objects in the parsing system now accept \n and \t for newline and tab. If you need to split or join by \, use \\. To not break any existing parsers, existing objects that have a \ have been updated to have \\.
next week
I only have two more weeks in the year, so I'll just do some cleanup and little jobs.

~ 4 Kilo Words of Erudition...
Tumblr media
(technically the number & unit stand the for 2 to the power of 12 in value, which is 4096 in data words / data syllables of content, hence the shortened name of 4KWe) of Erudite energy
As by myself as a user, I am (most likely to only one for the foreseeable future) blog contributor Klara "Oliv(a/e/ae)" Kér, using she / her pronouns and all the feminine / neuter conjugations jazz...
Tumblr media
May I share some former middle school (went to two middle schools, speaking here of the first where it ended up quite stale due to two specific special needs "educators" that I won't name) memories that I am fond off from my childhood, so please?
I am essentially a gamer / retro enthusiast since birth thanks mostly to my dad ironically enough, and also to my maternal grand parents + the whole 2000s social context I resided into back then. But the great thing about that is that I had time to see and play around with so much cool things during that time, from flight simulators, strategy games, action games... and even some taboo ones for a kid to have played during that time like Rockstar GTA III San Andreas & IV games & the Modern Warfare series. Personally more fond currently of what I will cover next as the games I will soon mention because of how nostalgic they make me feel, but also how timeless it stands and how its undying creative community remains relevant... to the extent that the contemporary copyleft has always persisted to some degree.
Essentially, during breaks between classes and also during computer laboratory sessions (also learned a good deal from there and the few technical workshop classes I attended), I came to play some but mostly observe a few of the older students' playtime. And guess what, it was mostly on First Person Shooters derived from Quake, but not the ones you might suspect.
(also introduced Minecraft student server builds at my school and saw some other games like Dwarf Fortress being played before I left, but yk... I left with some help for Autumn 2016 where I started a new journey at the next, last, middle school I went to, which I fully graduated in special needs... Also the time when I was introduced several times over to Linux & programming at both school and home were cool times. But all of those... stories are better left to be told later.)
You see, I noticed that the ones I saw were the copyleft ones among the Quake-derived forks and clones, not the official entries... And it seems really enticing to get back to (even for back then) for several reasons. What I have seen was mostly the grittier environment graphics ones so most likely AssaultCube (Reloaded, or not?) and OpenArena. And as I research the games on this day of 2023, I observe a couple more cool copyleft renditions of Quake and its clones... proving the timeless great appeal of the classic arena deathmatch genre and its strong but small player-developer community.
Only one among many innovators, a great guy iterating on the shoulder of giants that built that arena shooter legacy, beyond the often credited John Romero, John Carmack, Sandy Petersen, Tim Sweeney and Ken Silverman... They all deserve praise, and even they are only a few of the many names in the first person 3D gaming pioneers, both old and new.
Many of the other button hyperlinks are pretty much key copyleft games I would recommend taking a look into for this arena shooter genre (and especially the way they function / operate and personalized to one's preferences). And that excludes a few other ones including the sheer abundance of Quake series-related ports, engines and tools. Among them being 'The Dark Mod' (stealth first person game), 'Warsow' (less recently updated than Xonotic by at least five years), 'IronWail' (great new port for Quake 1) & 'Trenchbroom' (great WYSISWG editor for Quake1 format-compatible levels and content), just to cite a few that aren't neither "Blendo Games" (Quadrilateral Cowboy...) nor "id Software" (the original entries of Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake and a vast couple more under the rug).
And yes, I plan to contribute to the genre and produce my very own engine / content rendition as with the "Qodot" addon for the Godot open source game engine and a couple more things (hopefully PixelCrushers' systems and a bunch of custom tooling) to really make such a strong content library into my very own flavor, with as little to none of fighting side of the genre as reasonably attainable.
