On a semi related note the more I am subjected to Microsoft products the more I become convinced that the reason so many people these days believe themselves to be “bad with computers” is that the programs they are forced to use in their professional life are utterly incomprehensible to ANY rational human being and they are (rightfully enough) extrapolating out that this is just how computers are. They aren't!!! In their quest to remove all the “scary” details from their poor fragile end users Microsoft have created an ecosystem that behaves completely erratically and unpredictably and is by definition unknowable. Things just happen. Then they stop happening. Nothing ever announces why or how. Just a thousand vague and useless popups that may or may not be there tomorrow. I PROMISE computers are actually extremely simple and logical beasts.

remember that post about how every game should run on an average laptop. that but the steam deck. it’s more reasonable to expect games to be optimized to the point they can run on it since it’s meant for gaming.

The scariest thing about being the same person for 5 years straight is that some people are 5 years older than when I met them. This is extra scary because if I assume no one was using tumblr despite being below 13, that means they're all legal adults now every single one all of them that's bonkers. You used to be 13. How could this happen.

Slip ‘n Slime: A Charming Puzzle Experience
Tumblr media
Slip ‘n Slime casual puzzle adventure game now features a demo for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. All thanks to the creative minds at Wild Magic Studio. Which you can play now on Steam. If you like puzzles, squishy things, and sliding around in an adventure, then Slip ‘n Slime is about to be your new casual obsession. This upcoming Sokoban-inspired puzzler brings simple but addictive gameplay, retro pixel art, and a whole lot of charm. The best part? You can try it right now — there’s a free Linux demo on Steam.
Slip, Slide, and Solve
At its core, Slip ‘n Slime is a title about momentum and strategy. You play as an adorable little slime that glides across each level, stopping only when it bumps into something. Your job? Figure out the right moves to navigate obstacles, solve puzzles, and reach the goal. It sounds easy… until you realize that every slide counts, and one wrong move could send you right into a trap! Luckily, there are no time limits and no game overs here. If you mess up, just backtrack and try again. Whether you're playing for a few minutes or playing for hours, Slip ‘n Slime keeps things chill but challenging.
A World Full of Puzzles
With over 100 handcrafted levels, you’ll travel through different biomes, each with its own unique mechanics:
Autumn Forest – Crisp leaves, tricky obstacles, and tight corners.
Crystal Caves – Slippery surfaces, glowing crystals, and hidden paths.
Wizard’s Domain – Magic, mayhem, and mysterious portals.
More to discover!
Every area introduces new twists, from moving boxes to covering traps, collecting keys, and resizing your slime to squeeze into tiny spots. You’ll need brains and patience to master these puzzles, but when you finally figure it out, it’s ridiculously satisfying.

Casual Fun, No Stress
Not in the mood for big-brain puzzle-solving? No worries — Slip ‘n Slime is built for everyone. There’s no rush, no pressure, and no frustrating fail states. Just slide around, enjoy the satisfying squelch of your slime, and vibe with the game’s punchy sound effects. Even if you get stuck, you can rewind moves or reset instantly. It’s the kind of release you can play at your own pace — whether you’re a puzzle master or just looking for a fun way to unwind.
What Makes Slip ‘n Slime Awesome?
100+ handcrafted puzzles that are simple to learn but tricky to master.
Charming pixel art for that cozy, nostalgic feel.
No text, all visuals – easy for everyone to pick up and play.
Relaxed but rewarding gameplay – make mistakes, learn, and keep sliding!
Free demo available now on Steam – no excuses, go try it!
Get Involved
Slip ‘n Slime casual puzzle adventure is coming later this year, but you can jump in now by trying the free Linux demo on Steam. If you want to use a controller, this Xbox Controller on Amazon is a great choice. Want to help shape the game? Join the community and become a playtester by hopping into the Discord. Keep up with all the latest updates by following the devs on X (Twitter) and checking out the official website. If you love smart, stress-free puzzles, this one’s a no-brainer — Slip ‘n Slime is ready to slide onto your must-play list on Steam. Which you can play now on Linux, Mac, or Windows PC.

MY HERO <3
Honestly the biggest problem is that I'm totally new to Linux and still figuring things out, I will go forth and give it another try tomorrow <3
Excellent work on AO3Downloader, so simple yet so perfect, I love it dearly <3
Have a few more hearts: <3<3<3
would you mind talking about how you (currently) back up fanfics to read when AO3 is down? I've been thinking about trying it myself (now that I have a hard disk with enough space) but I have no idea how.
Le current system (all programs are free):
Get yourself Calibre (available for every OS)
Install the FanFicFare plugin, which allows you to go to any page on AO3 (and dozens of other sites) and download every fic there in the background while you do other things with your life
Profit. AKA: Archive every fic you even vaguely like because fics are text-based and take up barely any space, and calibre allows searching by tags similarly to AO3. I personally just bookmark everything I read and liked, and then periodically run FanFicFare on my newest bookmark pages. There is really no need to be discriminating here; I have never regretted having Moar Fics, and calibre makes things exceptionally searchable (and you can customize the tags once you've downloaded, for further fic findability)
When I was on Windows I preferred AO3downloader, which runs on Python and can go through all your bookmarks without input from you (FanFicFare needs to be told what the next page is; AO3 Downloader just starts at page 1 and goes until the page you tell it to stop on); AO3 Downloader also uses AO3's original download format (it literally just automates hitting the site's download button), whereas FanFicFare does a custom output (which you can tweak if desired, but it will never be exactly the same. Note that it works totally fine out of the box I'm just grumpy it's not Exactly The Same.) I couldn't get AO3 Downloader working on Linux, alas.
(If anyone knows how to get AO3 Downloader working on Linux Mint, or knows a calibre plugin that just automates clicking the AO3 download button, do please let me know.)

I don't think people realize how absolutely wild Linux is.
Here we have an Operating system that now has 100 different varieties, all of them with their own little features and markets that are also so customizable that you can literally choose what desktop environment you want. Alongside that it is the OS of choice for Supercomputers, most Web servers, and even tiny little toy computers that hackers and gadget makers use. It is the Operating System running on most of the world's smartphones. That's right. Android is a version of Linux.
It can run on literally anything up to and including a potato, and as of now desktop Linux Distros like Ubuntu and Mint are so easily to use and user friendly that technological novices can use them. This Operating system has had App stores since the 90s.
Oh, and what's more, this operating system was fuckin' built by volunteers and users alongside businesses and universities because they needed an all purpose operating system so they built one themselves and released it for free. If you know how to, you can add to this.
Oh, and it's founder wasn't some corporate hotshot. It's an introverted Swedish-speaking Finn who, while he was a student, started making his own Operating system after playing around with someone else's OS. He was going to call it Freax but the guy he got server space from named the folder of his project "Linux" (Linus Unix) and the name stuck. He operates this project from his Home office which is painted in a colour used in asylums. Man's so fucking introverted he developed the world's biggest code repo, Git, so he didn't have to deal with drama and email.
Steam adopted it meaning a LOT of games now natively run in Linux and what cannot be run natively can be adapted to run. It's now the OS used on their consoles (Steam Deck) and to this, a lot of people have found games run better on Linux than on Windows. More computers run Steam on Linux than MacOS.
On top of that the Arctic World Archive (basically the Svalbard Seed bank, but for Data) have this OS saved in their databanks so if the world ends the survivors are going to be using it.
On top of this? It's Free! No "Freemium" bullshit, no "pay to unlock" shit, no licenses, no tracking or data harvesting. If you have an old laptop that still works and a 16GB USB drive, you can go get it and install it and have a functioning computer because it uses less fucking resources than Windows. Got a shit PC? Linux Mint XFCE or Xubuntu is lightweight af. This shit is stopping eWaste.
What's more, it doesn't even scrimp on style. KDE, XFCE, Gnome, Cinnamon, all look pretty and are functional and there's even a load of people who try make their installs look pretty AF as a hobby called "ricing" with a subreddit (/r/unixporn) dedicated to it.
Linux is fucking wild.
