It is genuinely a weird feeling to have been tracking AI development since 2014 and seeing all the people just find out about it in the past 4 years because the same people that will call you a horrible degenerate for going anywhere near AI are literally the same people who praise Tiktok for its algorithm and they don't even know. They don't even *know* what the algorithm is.

you should’ve known something was up the second kazuha slid her phone across the table with a sly grin.
"you need this," she says, all too pleased with herself.
sungho leans in beside her, chin resting on his hand. "oh, absolutely. it’s the next big thing."
you glance down at the screen, unimpressed. "heartsync™? that sounds like a scam."
"it’s not," kazuha insists. "it's a revolution."
you narrow your eyes at her. "revolution is a strong word for a dating app."
sungho gestures wildly. "no, listen! this isn’t some basic swiping app. heartsync is, like, the future. ai-driven, hyper-accurate matchmaking." he wiggles his fingers in an attempt to look mysterious. "it scans all your online activity, text patterns, subconscious preferences—"
"wait, subconscious preferences?" you interrupt. "how the hell does it know what i subconsciously want?"
"science," kazuha says, as if that explains anything.
you stare at them, unimpressed. "so you’re telling me this thing invades my privacy, judges me, and then picks out some rando for me to date?"
"yep," sungho grins.
"hard pass."
kazhua sighs dramatically. "you’re so boring. come on, think about it. what if it actually works?"
"it won’t."
"but what if it does?"
you cross your arms. "i give it a week before i get matched with some weird middle-aged man who lives in his mom’s basement."
sungho gasps. "have a little faith, will you?!"
you snort, but kazuha suddenly looks too smug for your liking. before you can question it, your phone buzzes. you glance down.
"your friends are looking out for you! 💖 kazuha has sent you an invite to join heartsync™! experience true compatibility today. 💘"
you slowly raise your head. "zuha, did you just—"
"yep," she says.
"you—"
"it’s already downloading," sungho chimes in.
you look down at your phone in horror. sure enough, the app is installing.
"oh my god.”
jaehyun doesn’t even look up from his drink when taesan slides into the seat across from him, grinning like he’s about to be a menace.
"bro," taesan says, setting his phone down dramatically. "i found the solution to your dry-ass dating life."
jaehyun finally glances up. "i have a dating life."
woonhak, sitting beside him, lets out an exaggerated cough.
jaehyun glares. "shut up."
"he's not wrong," taesan snickers. "c’mon, look at this." he turns his phone around, revealing a sleek interface. jaehyun squints.
"heartsync?"
"ai-powered matchmaking, man. scientifically proven to find your perfect match."
jaehyun raises an eyebrow. "you sound like a bad infomercial."
woonhak leans in. "we already signed up. it’s, like, next-level tech. the app literally studies your habits, patterns, even your subconscious preferences."
jaehyun blinks. "that sounds illegal."
"nah, nah, just invasive," taesan says. "but in a good way."
jaehyun scoffs. "no such thing."
"just try it," woonhak says. "worst case, you get matched with someone weird and you ghost them."
"oh, so now i’m ghosting people?"
"what, like you don’t?" taesan smirks.
jaehyun rolls his eyes, but his phone suddenly buzzes.
"your best bros have your back! 💙 taesan has invited you to join heartsync™! what are you waiting for? your perfect match is waiting! 😉"
he looks up slowly. "you did not just—"
"i did," taesan grins.
woonhak claps him on the back. "welcome to the future, buddy."
jaehyun sighs. "you guys are the worst."
"and yet, here you are, downloading it," taesan singsongs.
jaehyun looks down at his phone. the app is downloading.
"...i hate you both."
setting up the app is way too easy. after a quick sign-up, a series of personality quizzes appear. you answer them halfheartedly, picking whatever feels right in the moment.
you expect a generic dating profile, but instead, a contract pops up.
"welcome to heartsync™'s exclusive perfect pair program! 💖 congratulations! by signing up, you agree to a 30-day trial relationship with your most compatible match. failure to complete the program will result in a penalty fee. please review the terms carefully. 📝"
you frown. "wait. penalty fee?"
kazhua leans over. "probably just a deterrent. no way they actually charge people."
"i don’t like this."
"it’s fine, just hit accept."
you squint at her, but against your better judgment, you press the button.
jaehyun does the same thing across town, equally suspicious.
then, both your phones buzz simultaneously.
"congratulations! 🎉 you’ve been matched! meet your perfect pair: myung jaehyun."
"congratulations! 🎉 you’ve been matched! meet your perfect pair: y/n."
jaehyun squints at his screen. "who the hell is y/n?"
you stare at yours. "who the hell is myung jaehyun?"
then, another notification.
"your first date has been scheduled! 🥰 see you at [reastaurant] tomorrow at 7 PM! remember: love is about commitment! 💞 failure to attend will result in a violation of your contract. 😘"
your stomach drops.
"...i think i just got scammed."
jaehyun, staring at the exact same message, mutters, "what the fuck?"
sungho and kazuha are dying.
"you’re stuck in a relationship for 30 days?!" sungho wheezes. "oh my god, i’m crying."
"this is the best thing that’s ever happened," kazuha says, wiping a fake tear.
you glare. "it’s not funny!"
"it’s hilarious," sungho corrects.
you groan. "this is the worst decision of my life."
kazhua gasps. "are you saying you regret trusting me?"
"yes."
"rude."
meanwhile, jaehyun is getting absolutely clowned on by his friends.
"so let me get this straight," taesan says, grinning like an idiot. "you’re contractually obligated to date this person?"
jaehyun rubs his temples. "apparently."
woonhak snickers. "bro. you’re trapped."
"i hate you both."
"nah," taesan says. "you love us. just like you’re about to love your new partner."
jaehyun looks up with dead eyes. "i hope the app malfunctions and matches you with each other."
woonhak gasps. "how dare you!"
"that would be so tragic," taesan grins. "imagine getting stuck in a relationship with woonhak."
woonhak shoves him. "shut up! i’d be a great boyfriend!"
jaehyun groans. "i cannot believe i let you guys talk me into this."
but before either of them can reply, his phone buzzes again.
"just a reminder! ❤️ your first date is TOMORROW at 7 PM! 💕 don’t keep your perfect match waiting! 😘 failure to attend will result in consequences. 🔥"
jaehyun stares at it.
"...i think i just signed my soul away."
you, staring at the exact same notification, sigh deeply.
what have you gotten yourself into?
...what?
you quickly scroll down. there’s a long wall of text in tiny font. definitely the terms and conditions you skimmed through without reading.
"effective immediately, you are required to actively participate in this relationship for the full 30-day duration. early termination will result in a penalty fee of—"
you freeze.
oh, hell no.
the penalty fee is HOW MUCH?!
"guys," you say, voice flat. "i think i just got scammed."
kazuh and sungho exchange glances. kazuha grabs your phone again and scrolls. her eyebrows shoot up. "holy shit. you’re stuck?"
"define stuck," you say, already dreading the answer.
sungho reads further. "...yep. stuck. you gotta go on dates, talk to this guy, and if you try to ignore him, the app gets passive-aggressive about it."
as if on cue, a new notification pops up.
"ghosting is unhealthy! say hi to your partner within the next 12 hours to maintain a positive relationship score. 💕"
you stare at the screen in horror.
kazuha and sungho? already laughing their asses off.
"this is the best thing that’s ever happened," sungho wheezes.
"no, no, this is cursed," you say, shaking your head. "there has to be a way out of this."
sungho grins. "you could pay the fee."
"i’m not paying that much just to escape some ai-manufactured relationship," you grumble.
kazuh, still laughing, pats your shoulder. "guess you’re dating myung jaehyun now."
somewhere else, jaehyun is also freaking out.
"taesan, what the hell did you make me sign up for?"
jaehyun stares at his phone like it just personally betrayed him.
"you got matched?" taesan asks, amused. he leans over jaehyun’s shoulder to check. "ohhh. wait. you actually got someone decent-looking. nice."
"not nice!" jaehyun exclaims, shoving his phone in taesan’s face. "look at this! it’s a contract. i have to date this person for 30 days or i have to pay an insane fee."
taesan reads for a second, then bursts out laughing. "holy shit. you’re trapped."
"why didn’t you tell me this could happen?!"
"because i didn’t think you’d actually get a match."
"what do i do?" jaehyun groans, scratching the back of his head.
"just go with it," taesan says. "it’s only a month. fake-date them, get some free meals, and worst-case scenario, you make a new friend."
jaehyun grumbles. "what if they suck?"
"what if you suck?"
"i mean, yeah, probably," jaehyun admits. "but still."
his phone buzzes.
"say hi to your partner within 12 hours to maintain a positive relationship score! 💕"
jaehyun stares blankly at the notification. then he looks at taesan.
"okay, but, like… do i get a refund if i cry?"
taesan cackles. "nope. no refunds, buddy. enjoy your new relationship."
jaehyun groans and flops onto the couch, phone balanced on his chest, already regretting everything.
you’re still convinced you’ve been scammed.
it’s not just the fact that you’re contractually obligated to go on this date, it’s the restaurant.
"how the hell did it know?" you mutter, staring at the notification again.
sungho leans over your shoulder, reading it for the tenth time. "i mean… it’s a little creepy."
"it’s very creepy," you correct. "i’ve never put this place in my location history, never mentioned it online, never even texted about it."
kazuha hums, sipping her drink. "maybe you thought about it too hard and the app just knew."
you look at her like she’s insane. "you’re telling me heartsync can read my mind now?"
"i mean, why not? it already owns your soul."
"not helping."
sungho suddenly perks up, squinting at the name on your screen. "wait. myung jaehyun?"
"yeah?"
he snaps his fingers. "oh! i had a class with him last year."
you blink. "and you’re only mentioning this now?"
sungho shrugs. "i forgot. but, uh…" he pauses. "he’s kinda a loser. in a cute way."
you stare at him. "define cute loser."
"like, y’know. a little awkward. kinda clumsy. but he’s not a bad guy."
kazuha raises an eyebrow. "so what i’m hearing is, you’ve already got an advantage."
"what advantage?" you ask flatly.
"you can be the cool one in this relationship," she says, smirking.
sungho grins. "oh yeah, you’ve already won."
you groan, sinking into your seat. "why am i even doing this?"
"because you’re legally bound by a contract," kazuha reminds you.
"right. love that for me."
jaehyun has the same problem.
"this is weird," he mutters, staring at his phone.
woonhak peeks over his shoulder. "dude, how did it know your favorite restaurant?"
"i don’t know."
"have you ever posted about it?" taesan asks.
"nope."
"checked in there?"
"never."
woonhak whistles. "yeah, that’s terrifying."
jaehyun groans. "why am i even going?"
taesan pats his shoulder. "because you’re legally bound by a contract."
jaehyun glares. "i hate you."
you arrive at the restaurant five minutes early, because despite your skepticism, you do respect punctuality.
what you don’t expect is to see someone already waiting at the entrance.
he's tall, a little awkward in the way he shifts on his feet, checking his phone. glasses slipping down his nose.
you approach cautiously. "...myung jaehyun?"
he looks up, blinking.
oh.
he’s kinda cute. in a loser-y way.
"oh," he says. "uh. hey."
you stare at each other for a beat.
jaehyun scratches the back of his neck. "so, uh… this is weird, right?"
"extremely."
he lets out a short laugh. "cool, just making sure."
you glance at the restaurant. "wanna get this over with?"
"yep."
you head inside together.
the weirdness doesn’t stop there.
you both open the menu, and your phones buzz at the same time.
"feeling indecisive? 💡 you both love the same dish! try the spicy seafood pasta! 🍝💖"
you slowly look up at jaehyun.
he looks back, expression unreadable.
"...so, uh," you start.
"are we just gonna ignore that?" he asks.
"we could."
jaehyun nods. "cool. because that was terrifying."
you both order the pasta anyway.
somewhere between the appetizer and the main course, the awkwardness starts to fade.
you’re still skeptical, but… conversation with jaehyun is weirdly easy.
he’s funny in an unintentional way. a little clumsy with his words, but quick to laugh at himself. it’s not what you expected.
"so," he says between bites, "are you, like, willingly doing this, or were you also tricked by your so-called friends?"
you groan. "tricked. sungho and kazuha set me up."
"ah," jaehyun nods. "taesan and woonhak did the same to me."
"so we’re both victims."
"basically."
you clink your glasses in mutual suffering.
then, another notification.
"running out of things to talk about? try reminiscing about your childhood talent show disaster! 😆✨"
you both freeze.
jaehyun slowly looks up. "...did your phone just say—?"
"yep," you cut in.
"what the hell?"
"no idea."
you stare at each other.
then jaehyun cautiously asks, "...did you actually have a childhood talent show disaster?"
you hesitate. "...maybe."
his eyes widen. "no way."
"look, it wasn’t that bad—"
"tell me everything."
you sigh, defeated. "i was seven, okay? i was supposed to sing. i got up there, forgot all the words, panicked, and ended up just dancing instead."
jaehyun claps. "improv! i respect that."
"bad improv," you correct.
"still, you committed. that’s what matters.”
and just like that, the skepticism eases.
then the app sends another notification.
"bonding over past failures? we love to see it! 😍💕 by the way, your partner thinks the nickname 'woonbaby' is hilarious. go ahead, try it! 😏"
you blink.
jaehyun reads his own notification.
then he looks at you, face slowly turning red.
"...what the fuck?"
you can’t help it. you laugh. "what the hell is woonbaby?"
jaehyun groans, covering his face. "it’s—it’s stupid. my friend woonhak. someone called him that once and it just stuck."
"oh my god," you grin. "you definitely still call him that."
"i do not," jaehyun lies.
you raise an eyebrow. "so if you text him right now and ask, he won’t confirm?"
jaehyun opens his mouth, then closes it.
"...no comment."
you cackle.
"oh my god," jaehyun mutters, slumping in his seat. "i hate this app."
"i love this app," you say gleefully.
by the time the bill arrives, you have to admit something.
this was not a disaster.
you’re still weirded out by the app’s accuracy. it’s unsettling how well it seems to know you both.
but jaehyun?
...he’s not so bad.
"so," he says as you both step outside, hands in pockets. "same time next week?"
you blink. "what?"
he holds up his phone.
"congrats! 🎉 your next date is scheduled for next friday! love takes consistency! 💖 ditching is not an option. 😉"
you groan. "again?"
"yep."
"...fine."
jaehyun grins. "see you then, partner."
you shake your head, but you can’t help the small smile forming.
what the hell have you gotten yourself into?
you’re in the middle of something important when your phone buzzes.
"surprise! 🎉 we’ve scheduled a spontaneous date night for you and jaehyun! quality time is crucial for growing relationships! 💕 see you at 7PM! 😘"
you stare at the screen.
then you glance at the time.
6:20PM.
"are you kidding me?" you say aloud.
sungho and kazuha look up from where they’re sprawled across your couch, watching a drama. "what?" kazuha asks.
"this stupid app just scheduled a date."
"wait, i thought your next one wasn’t until friday," sungho says.
"it was," you emphasize. "now it’s tonight. at seven."
sungho winces. "oh, that’s rough."
kazuha squints. "can’t you just cancel?"
you shake your head and turn your screen to them.
"cancelling is NOT an option! 🫵😤 love takes EFFORT! 💖"
kazuha snorts. "damn. that app is really holding you hostage."
you sigh. "i hate this."
sungho shrugs. "on the bright side, at least jaehyun is fun to mess with."
you scowl, but you don’t argue.
jaehyun is having an equally miserable time.
"you have got to be kidding me," he groans.
taesan and woonhak glance up from where they’re messing around on the studio couch. "what?" woonhak asks.
jaehyun turns his phone to them.
taesan squints. "another date? bro, you just had one."
"i know," jaehyun says, exasperated. "i have work to do!"
"just reschedule," woonhak suggests.
jaehyun gives him a deadpan look and flips his phone back around.
"cancelling is NOT an option! 🫵😤 love takes EFFORT! 💖"
woonhak bursts out laughing. "nah, this is hilarious."
"i hate this app," jaehyun mutters.
"okay, but like," taesan leans forward, "where are you even supposed to take them? don’t you have to finish your demo?"
jaehyun groans, rubbing his face. "yeah. i do."
he stares at his screen for a second, then sighs. "i guess they’re just coming here."
woonhak and taesan exchange glances.
"bold," woonhak comments.
"risky," taesan adds.
jaehyun throws a notebook at them.
you’re about five seconds away from ghosting when your phone buzzes.
myung jaehyun: uh. slight change of plans myung jaehyun: i’m stuck in the studio bc i have work to finish myung jaehyun: so if you’re cool with it, you can just come here?
you stare at the message.
then you sigh.
you: send me the address
a moment later, it comes through.
you grab your things and head out, still half-annoyed, half-curious about what you’re walking into.
jaehyun’s studio is tucked away in a quieter part of the city, the kind of place you’d probably never stumble upon unless you were looking for it.
the building itself is older, but inside, it’s got that warm, slightly chaotic energy of a space that’s lived in.
post-it notes are stuck to random surfaces. half-full water bottles clutter the desks. a worn couch sits against the wall, surrounded by tangled cables and spare equipment.
jaehyun is hunched over the desk, headphones around his neck, messy hair even messier than usual. he spins in his chair when you walk in, eyes slightly wide.
"oh. hey."
"hey," you say, glancing around. "so this is where the magic happens?"
"uh," jaehyun scratches the back of his neck, "something like that."
you step further inside, taking in the mix of instruments, wires, and open project files on the screen.
"you work here alone?"
"nah," jaehyun gestures vaguely. "woonhak and taesan share this space with me, but they’re not here right now."
"cool."
an awkward pause.
jaehyun clears his throat. "so, uh… i do have to work, but you can hang out? there’s snacks in that cabinet, and the couch is—"
you flop onto the couch before he can finish his sentence.
jaehyun blinks. "—yeah. okay. make yourself at home."
you grin. "thanks, host."
jaehyun groans but turns back to his screen, muttering something about "stupid app forcing dates at the worst times."
you watch him for a moment as he scrolls through his project.
his sleeves are pushed up, revealing the faint ink stains on his fingers. his foot taps absently against the floor as he listens to the playback.
you close your eyes and let the soft hum of music fill the space.
time passes.
jaehyun works. you scroll through your phone, occasionally glancing up to watch him tweak something in his file.
it’s… oddly peaceful.
you get up and sit down at the desk next to him, he’s too immersed to acknowldge you.
despite the forced nature of this whole situation, there’s something nice about sitting in a space where someone is just doing what they love.
you start to relax.
and at some point, without even meaning to, you start to drift off.
jaehyun only notices when he turns around to say something and sees you slumped over the desk next to him, head resting on your arms.
he freezes.
stares.
panics.
oh shit oh shit oh shit.
you’re asleep.
here. in his studio.
jaehyun is hyperaware of everything. the quiet rise and fall of your breathing. the way your fingers are curled slightly, like you were mid-scroll before you passed out.
he has no idea what to do.
should he wake you up? would that be rude? but if he doesn’t, is that weirder?
he’s still spiraling when the door swings open.
"forgot my charger," taesan says, stepping inside. "also, i’m stealing your—"
he stops.
jaehyun can feel the moment taesan processes the scene in front of him.
then—
"holy shit."
jaehyun whips around. "shut up."
taesan grins. "no way. you’re actually—"
"shut. up."
taesan snickers. "oh, this is amazing."
jaehyun glares. "don’t. start."
but it’s too late. taesan is already pulling out his phone.
"bro," he whispers, cackling, "you’re literally watching them like they’re a rare bird species."
"i am not," jaehyun hisses.
"you so are. oh my god."
jaehyun is about to throw something when you shift slightly, letting out a soft sigh.
both of them freeze.
taesan vibrates with silent laughter.
jaehyun, who is now very much contemplating murder, snaps, "get your stupid charger and leave."
taesan holds his hands up in surrender, still grinning. "alright, alright. relax, lover boy."
jaehyun throws a notebook at him.
taesan leaves.
jaehyun exhales, running a hand through his hair.
he turns back to you.
you’re still asleep, breathing steady, face relaxed.
he sighs.
and despite himself, despite the utter embarrassment of this entire situation…
he can’t help the small, stupid smile that tugs at his lips.
this app is so dumb.
but maybe…
just maybe…
it’s onto something.
you wake up slowly, the kind of hazy drift between sleep and awareness where you don’t quite remember where you are.
there’s the soft hum of music. the faint scratch of a pen. the scent of something vaguely citrusy, mixed with the underlying warmth of a well-used space.
then—
"finally awake?"
you blink blearily. jaehyun is sitting at the desk, spinning a pen between his fingers, watching you with an amused expression.
reality clicks into place.
the studio. the forced date. you, falling asleep like an idiot.
you groan, rubbing your face. "how long was i out?"
jaehyun shrugs. "an hour? maybe more?"
you wince. "why didn’t you wake me up?"
"you looked comfortable," he says, like it’s the most obvious thing in the world.
you stare at him.
jaehyun stares back.
heat creeps up the back of your neck. you push it down and scowl instead. "so you just let me drool all over your desk?"
"you didn’t drool," jaehyun says. then, after a pause, "probably."
you groan again and stretch, the stiffness in your neck making you regret everything. "well, thanks for that. i guess."
jaehyun chuckles, spinning back to his screen. "anytime."
you roll your eyes but don’t fight the small smile threatening to form.
you end up staying.
it’s not like you planned to, but the vibe is easy, and jaehyun is… well.
he’s kind of nice to be around.
he works while you scroll through your phone, occasionally showing him something stupid that makes him snort. at one point, he grabs a bag of chips from a shelf and wordlessly hands it to you.
"what’s this for?" you ask.
"you skipped dinner."
you blink. "how do you know?"
jaehyun raises an eyebrow. "because i also skipped dinner, and i didn’t see you eat anything either."
…fair point.
you take the bag and mumble a thanks. jaehyun just shrugs like it’s no big deal.
somewhere between talking about absolutely nothing, watching him edit his project, and accidentally getting crumbs all over the desk, you start to forget that this whole thing was a forced date.
it doesn’t feel like one anymore.
and you don’t know if that’s a good thing or not.
it’s nearly midnight when you check your phone and realize how late it’s gotten.
"shit," you mutter.
jaehyun glances up. "huh?"
"i should probably go."
he blinks, like he just processed the time himself. "oh. right."
you stand, stretching again, then glance at him. "you gonna keep working?"
"for a bit," jaehyun says, rubbing his neck. "i’m almost done."
you nod, then hesitate.
you’re not sure why you hesitate.
but before you can overthink it, you blurt out, "this wasn’t that bad."
jaehyun raises an eyebrow. "wow. high praise."
"shut up," you say, rolling your eyes.
he grins. "but yeah. wasn’t that bad."
you huff, grabbing your things. "see you friday, loser."
"see you, drooler."
you flip him off as you walk out the door.
jaehyun just laughs.
as you head home, your phone buzzes.
"congrats! 🎉 you’ve just completed an unplanned date! we bet you had a GREAT time 😘💖 can’t wait for friday! 😍"
you stare at the notification.
then you scoff, shaking your head.
stupid app.
you just want your morning coffee.
that’s it. just a simple, peaceful start to your day before dealing with actual responsibilities.
but when you step into the coffee shop, your usual one, the one you’ve been going to for years, you freeze.
because sitting right there, hunched over his phone with slight dark circles under his eyes and a half-finished iced americano in front of him, is myung jaehyun.
he doesn’t notice you at first. he just stares blankly at his screen, blinking slow like a loading error. he’s so out of it that when the barista calls out his order, he doesn’t even react.
so, naturally, you decide to make his life harder.
"myung jaehyun," you say, loud enough for half the café to hear.
he flinches like you just smacked him.
"huh?!"
"your coffee," you deadpan, nodding towards the counter.
he follows your gaze, then blinks again. "oh. right."
you snort as he stumbles up to grab it, still looking half-asleep.
when he returns to his seat, you’re still standing there, arms crossed.
"what?" he mumbles.
"this is my coffee shop."
jaehyun squints at you. "…what?"
"i come here every morning," you say, pointing at the barista like they can somehow confirm this.
jaehyun shrugs. "cool. i came here because my app said it had ‘the best morning recharge.’"
you frown. "your app?"
"heartsync," he says, yawning. "you know. the app that ruined our lives?"
your stomach drops. "you’re kidding."
jaehyun pulls out his phone and flashes the notification at you. sure enough.
"rise and shine! 🌞 grab your perfect morning pick-me-up at caffeine fix! ☕✨"
your jaw clenches. you also got a similar notification this morning.
slowly, your eyes meet. "okay," you say. "this is weird."
jaehyun hums, sipping his coffee. "yeah. but whatever. i needed caffeine."
you stare at him, offended. "so you’re just accepting this?"
"i mean, if the app is forcing me to get good coffee, i won’t complain," he says, completely unserious.
you hate that he’s taking this so lightly. you hate that he doesn’t even seem surprised.
you snatch his coffee and take a sip.
"hey!" jaehyun protests.
you smack it back down on the table. "that’s for being weirdly okay with this."
he just glares at you, rubbing his temples. "i just woke up. can you at least let me suffer in peace?"
you sigh, pulling out a chair. "fine. but i’m sitting here now. just to make sure you don’t pass out or something."
jaehyun looks at you, surprised. then he grins. "aww. you care."
you grab a sugar packet and chuck it at his forehead.
after that, you make a decision.
you’re not going to see jaehyun for a while.
not because you mind him. he’s fine. whatever. but because there’s something unnerving about the way this stupid app is leading you to each other like rats in some kind of romantic lab experiment.
so the next morning, you take a different route to work.
and by "different," you mean you add twenty minutes to your commute just to be safe.
you’re feeling pretty good about yourself until you stop by a grocery store later that evening—
and jaehyun is right there, staring at a shelf of instant ramen like it personally betrayed him.
you freeze. he looks up.
silence.
"are you kidding me?" you groan, dragging a hand down your face.
jaehyun just stares at you. "you’re the one who just walked in."
"yeah, but i specifically avoided my usual route just to make sure this wouldn’t happen," you argue.
"okay, well, i was just trying to get food," he says, exasperated. "i ran out of ramen."
you narrow your eyes. "don’t tell me your app told you to come here."
he hesitates.
then he holds up his phone.
"craving a late-night snack? 🤤🍜 don’t worry, we got you! swing by mart express—you never know who you might run into! 😉"
you want to throw something.
instead, you march up to him, grab his phone, and put it on airplane mode.
jaehyun blinks. "…what are you doing."
"fixing our problem," you say, pulling out your own phone and doing the same.
jaehyun stares at you for a moment. then, to your surprise, he actually nods. "okay," he says. "good plan."
you blink. "wait. you’re not gonna fight me on this?"
he shrugs. "nah. the app is getting creepy."
you fold your arms. "so you do think it’s weird?"
"i always thought it was weird," jaehyun says. "i just don’t care as much as you do."
you glare at him, but he’s already turning back to the ramen shelf like this whole conversation didn’t just happen.
unbelievable.
you leave the store together, mostly because your places are in the same general direction.
except five minutes in, jaehyun suddenly stops walking.
"shit," he mutters.
"what?" you ask.
he sighs. "i don’t know how to get home."
you stare at him. "you what."
"i always use my phone for directions!" he says, waving his arms. "but i turned it off, and now i’m lost."
you pinch the bridge of your nose. "you’re unbelievable."
"hey, you told me to turn it off!"
"because we were being manipulated!"
"well, congrats, now i’m gonna die on the street because of you."
"oh my god," you groan. "just—fine. where do you live?"
jaehyun tells you the address. you stare at him.
"jaehyun," you say. "that’s literally ten minutes from my place."
jaehyun blinks. "…oh."
you squint at him. "have you been taking the long way home this entire time?"
he scratches his head. "maybe?"
you don’t know whether to laugh or hit him.
instead, you just sigh and grab his wrist.
"come on," you say, dragging him in the right direction. "i’ll walk you."
jaehyun doesn’t protest.
but when you glance at him, he’s smiling.
you get him home without issue.
when you stop in front of his building, jaehyun turns to you.
"thanks," he says, rubbing his neck. "and, uh. good job fighting the system, i guess."
you snort. "yeah. whatever."
he grins, but there’s something softer in it this time.
"see you around?" he asks.
you hesitate.
then you sigh. "probably."
jaehyun laughs. "probably."
you don’t check your phone again until you’re home.
when you do, you have one new notification.
"aw, how sweet! 🥰 you make such a great team! 💕"
you groan, rolling your eyes. the off the grid mode didn’t work.
“so,” sungho says, dragging out the word like he’s about to be annoying.
you look up from your phone, raising an eyebrow. “so?”
sungho smirks. “how’s myung jaehyun?”
you blink. “why are you asking like that?”
“oh, no reason,” he says, very unconvincingly. “you just seem to see him a lot.”
you scoff. “that’s because this stupid app won’t leave us alone.”
“mhm.”
“it literally forced us to meet up.”
“sure.”
you glare at him. “i don’t like him, if that’s what you’re implying.”
sungho just hums. “never said you did.”
you hate him.
“anyway,” you say, aggressively changing the subject. “when are you free? let’s get dinner or something.”
sungho shrugs. “ask jaehyun. you seem to hang out with him more than me these days.”
you chuck a pillow at his face.
on jaehyun’s end, taesan is just as bad.
“so, you and your soulmate have been seeing each other a lot.”
jaehyun groans. “don’t call them that.”
“why not? isn’t that what the app says?” taesan teases.
jaehyun sighs, tilting his head back against the couch. “we don’t even take it seriously.”
“and yet you still see them outside of what the app says.”
“it just happens,” jaehyun defends.
“right.”
jaehyun doesn’t even bother arguing. it’s taesan. nothing he says will change his mind once he starts being annoying.
instead, he just mutters, “i don’t even like them like that.”
taesan snorts. “yeah. okay.”
jaehyun scowls at him. “i don’t.”
taesan grins. “never said you did.”
jaehyun glares at him.
taesan only laughs.
but the truth is—
neither of you mind seeing each other.
the notification hits your phone at the worst possible time, mid-bite into a sandwich, your mouth too full to properly react as you stare at the bolded text on the screen.
💖 heartsync™ challenge: surprise your match with a meaningful gift! don’t forget! thoughtfulness is key! 🎁
you narrow your eyes. a meaningful gift?
sungho, sitting across from you, glances at your phone and snorts. “oh, this is good. what are you gonna get him?”
you finish chewing before deadpanning, “a rock.”
sungho almost chokes on his drink.
jaehyun gets the same notification while lying on his bed, aimlessly scrolling through his phone. he barely processes it at first, but then—
a meaningful gift.
he groans, rubbing his face. "why is this starting to feel like a real relationship?"
“because it is a real relationship,” taesan says from his desk, not looking up from his laptop.
“it’s not,” jaehyun argues immediately.
“sure,” taesan replies, unconvinced.
jaehyun sighs. “what even counts as meaningful?”
taesan finally looks at him, unimpressed. “you’re the one dating them.”
“fake dating,” jaehyun corrects.
“sure,” taesan repeats.
jaehyun groans again.
you decide to put some effort into it.
not because you care or anything, but because you know jaehyun will definitely try, and you don’t want to look like an asshole in comparison.
you wander through a store, scanning the shelves for something that could count as thoughtful.
jaehyun gives off dog energy, doesn’t he?
you frown. that’s weird to think about. but it’s true. he’s clumsy, a little dumb, but weirdly endearing.
then, you spot it.
a plush keychain. a little golden retriever with floppy ears and big, round eyes.
you hesitate before picking it up.
it’s stupid. but it’s also… kind of perfect.
you buy it before you can second-guess yourself.
jaehyun, meanwhile, is just as lost.
he walks through a store with woonhak, who has been absolutely no help.
“why don’t you just get them a candle?” woonhak suggests.
jaehyun sighs. “that’s not meaningful.”
“depends on the scent.”
“woonhak.”
“fine.” woonhak gestures vaguely. “what do they even like?”
jaehyun pauses.
he… actually knows quite a bit. their favorite color, the snacks they always buy, the way they take their coffee—
he stops. when did he start noticing so much?
woonhak stares at him. “dude, you’re so gone.”
jaehyun immediately shakes his head. “shut up.”
but he grabs something off the shelf anyway, a small coffee cup for the coffee addict that is you.
just because it makes sense. not because he cares.
you agree to meet at the studio.
it’s not that weird, jaehyun spends most of his time there anyway, and you’ve been there before.
when you walk in, however, you’re met with the sight of woonhak sitting at the desk, staring intensely at his laptop screen.
you blink. “you’re here?”
woonhak looks up. “you’re here?”
“uh. yeah?”
jaehyun walks in behind you, closing the door. “we’re doing that stupid challenge.”
woonhak frowns. “what challenge?”
you smirk. “the one that made him tell me about woonbaby.”
there’s a beat of silence.
“YOU TOLD THEM?!” woonhak exclaims, turning to jaehyun with betrayal in his eyes.
jaehyun looks genuinely alarmed. “IT WASN’T MY FAULT! THE APP TOLD THEM.”
woonhak glares. “i don’t care! you let it happen.”
you watch, amused, as they bicker.
eventually, jaehyun gives up with an exasperated sigh. “whatever, let’s just do this.”
you sit down, pulling out the little plush keychain.
jaehyun stares at it.
“what?” you say.
he blinks. “…is that a dog?”
you nod. “it reminded me of you.”
woonhak howls with laughter.
jaehyun scowls. “what does that mean?”
you shrug. “you figure it out.”
woonhak is practically crying. “bro, you’re literally a golden retriever.”
jaehyun grumbles, but you catch the way he turns the keychain over in his hands, quietly pressing at the plush fabric.
then, he clears his throat, pulling out his own gift.
a simple and cute coffee cup, one you can reuse for your favorite coffee shop.
you pause.
you recognize this brand. it’s the one you always buy from.
“…how did you know i like these?” you ask.
jaehyun hesitates. “you mentioned it once.”
you stare at him. that was days ago.
woonhak, clearly sensing something, slowly scoots away.
“uh,” he mutters, “i’ll leave you guys to it.”
he exits the room.
leaving you alone with jaehyun.
you turn back to him, suddenly unsure what to say.
he shifts in his seat. “so. we did the challenge.”
you nod. “yeah.”
there’s a silence.
“…i actually really like this,” jaehyun admits, still holding the plush keychain.
you blink. the silence is loud.
he glances at you, a little sheepish. “i know you probably just picked it because it’s funny, but… i like it.”
you feel something unfamiliar stir in your chest.
“…i like mine too,” you say.
he looks up, a little surprised.
you clear your throat. “it’s thoughtful.”
a small smile tugs at his lips.
“good,” he says.
later that night, you add the keychain to your bag.
and jaehyun clips his onto his.
not that it means anything.
💖 heartsync challenge: write a letter to your partner about what this experience meant to you. be honest! no holding back! 💌
you stare at your phone.
your stomach turns.
this is different from the other challenges. those were fun, stupid, even. buying a gift? easy. going on a last-minute date? frustrating but manageable.
but this?
you put your phone down and ignore it.
jaehyun, on the other hand, groans dramatically and flops onto his bed.
taesan and woonhak glance at each other.
“what now?” taesan asks.
jaehyun lifts his phone, showing them the notification.
woonhak snorts. “damn. that’s deep.”
“yeah,” jaehyun mutters. “stupid app.”
taesan raises a brow. “you’re actually gonna do it?”
jaehyun pauses. “...it’s just a challenge.”
woonhak smirks. “uh-huh.”
jaehyun rolls onto his stomach, hiding his face.
taesan leans back in his chair. “so… what has this experience meant to you?”
jaehyun groans into his pillow.
woonhak cackles. “this is hilarious.”
jaehyun throws a pillow at him.
you don’t write the letter.
you could.
but you don’t.
because writing it down makes it real. and you don’t want to think about what this actually means.
so, you pretend it doesn’t exist.
the app can’t force you, right?
right.
jaehyun stares at the blank page in front of him.
just write something dumb and get it over with.
but when he tries to start, nothing feels right.
so, he sighs, taps his pen against the desk, and just… writes what comes naturally.
woonhak picks up the folded letter before jaehyun can stop him.
jaehyun nearly tackles him.
“GIVE IT BACK.”
woonhak dances out of reach, grinning. “ooooh, what’s this?”
“IT’S NOTHING.”
taesan, completely unbothered, takes a sip of his drink. “so you did write one.”
jaehyun glares. “it’s just a stupid challenge.”
woonhak dodges another grab. “damn, you really poured your heart into this, huh?”
jaehyun huffs. “i hate both of you.”
woonhak finally tosses it back, laughing.
jaehyun stuffs it into his bag, scowling.
“…so when are you giving it to them?” taesan asks.
jaehyun freezes.
“uh.”
“…you are giving it to them, right?” woonhak says, amused.
jaehyun looks away. “i don’t know.”
“…bro.”
“i just—” jaehyun sighs. “what if they don’t care?”
woonhak and taesan exchange a look.
then, woonhak shrugs. “i guess you’ll find out.”
you don’t ask if jaehyun wrote his letter.
you don’t want to know.
because if he did, then you’d have to think about why you didn’t.
when jaehyun sees you next, he almost gives it to you.
almost.
but then he sees the way you act like nothing is different.
so, he keeps it in his bag.
not that it matters.
💖 heartsync update: your 30-day trial is almost over! it’s time for your final compatibility assessment!
will you renew? yes or no? make your choice carefully! 😘
your thumb hovers over the screen.
your chest feels tight.
final compatibility assessment.
it’s just a stupid button. just a choice.
but it feels heavier than that.
yes or no. stay or leave.
do you want this to continue?
and that’s the problem, isn’t it?
because you do. but you also don’t.
or rather, you can’t.
if you say yes, what does that mean? that the app was right? that this was real? that you’re willing to risk whatever this has become?
that’s too much.
that’s terrifying.
so, instead of thinking, instead of wondering, instead of feeling—
you press no.
and just like that, it’s over.
jaehyun gets the notification when he’s halfway to the café.
he’d planned to meet you there, casually slipping you the letter like it wasn’t a big deal. but then—
💔 heartsync update: your trial has ended. thanks for participating! your match has chosen not to renew. we’ve removed them from your contacts. no hard feelings! 💕
he stops walking.
stares at the screen.
his stomach sinks.
his heart—
no renewal.
he scrolls through his messages, but your contact is gone. every conversation, every stupid joke, every awkward late-night text—erased.
like you were never there at all.
like he imagined it.
like it meant nothing.
he swallows.
turns on his heel.
walks away.
when you check your phone again, it’s like jaehyun never existed.
your chat history? gone.
your notifications? empty.
you type his name into your contacts. nothing.
it feels like a punch to the stomach. you should’ve expected this. you did expect this.
but it still hurts.
did he pick no, too?
…or did you delete something that he actually wanted?
you close your phone.
this is for the best.
you keep telling yourself that. so why doesn’t it feel true?
jaehyun stares at the letter in his hands.
it’s stupid.
he shouldn’t care.
but he does. and that pisses him off.
woonhak notices. “what’s up with you?”
jaehyun doesn’t answer.
taesan glances over. “hey. you good?”
jaehyun laughs, but it’s hollow. “yeah.”
woonhak raises a brow.
jaehyun crumples the letter in his fist.
“i just wasted my time, that’s all.”
he gets up.
leaves before they can ask anything else.
you tell sungho and kazuha that it’s fine.
that you’re fine.
sungho doesn’t buy it. “so, you just… ended it?”
you shrug. “it was gonna end anyway.”
kazuha frowns. “but… did you want it to?”
you open your mouth. hesitate.
sungho sighs. “you’re an idiot.”
you glare. “thanks.”
“i’m serious. if you actually liked him—”
“i don’t.”
“…right,” kazuha says, unconvinced.
sungho crosses his arms. “you know, he could’ve said yes.”
you look away.
because that thought is the worst one of all.
jaehyun avoids the café.
he avoids the places he might see you.
he pretends it doesn’t sting.
but when he’s alone, when the studio is quiet, when there’s nothing left to distract him.
he pulls out the letter.
the one you’ll never read.
and he wonders if he had given it to you, would it have made a difference?
jaehyun is not the kind of guy who does this.
he’s not the type to chase after people. he doesn’t do big confrontations. he doesn’t throw himself into situations where his feelings are laid bare, where rejection is a very real possibility.
but here he is.
sitting in a café across from woonhak, gripping a coffee cup like it’s a lifeline, his foot tapping against the floor so fast it’s a miracle the ground isn’t shaking.
woonhak, for his part, is staring at him like he’s experiencing secondhand embarrassment in real time.
“so… let me get this straight,” woonhak says, setting his drink down. “you got matched with someone on a dating app. spent a whole month with them. actually liked them. and now, instead of talking to them like a normal person, you’re here, asking me to help you find them?”
jaehyun scowls. “when you say it like that, it sounds weird.”
woonhak leans back in his chair. “because it is weird.”
jaehyun groans, running a hand through his hair. “i just—” he hesitates, voice quieter. “they pressed no.”
woonhak’s eyebrows lift.
jaehyun clenches his jaw. “they chose to end it.”
woonhak watches him for a moment. then, slowly, he folds his arms.
“so? that’s it? you’re just gonna let the app decide how this ends?”
jaehyun exhales sharply. “no.”
“good.” woonhak cracks his knuckles. “let’s find them.”
jaehyun blinks. “wait, you’re actually helping?”
woonhak smirks. “are you kidding? this is the most interesting thing that’s happened all week.”
jaehyun rolls his eyes, but his heart is beating a little faster now.
step one: figure out where you work.
woonhak, surprisingly, is really good at this. almost too good.
“didn’t you mention that sungho is their friend?” he asks, scrolling through his phone.
jaehyun blinks. “uh. yeah?”
woonhak hums. “i think i saw something on his page last week. something about dropping off lunch at their job.”
jaehyun leans over. “you can find that?”
“duh. i have skills.”
jaehyun doesn’t question it.
a few minutes later, woonhak tilts his screen toward jaehyun. “bingo. looks like they work at that bookstore near the subway station.”
jaehyun’s stomach twists.
this is actually happening.
woonhak smirks. “you ready?”
jaehyun doesn’t answer. just grabs his jacket and walks out the door.
the bookstore is quiet when jaehyun steps inside.
the warm scent of paper and ink fills the air. soft lighting casts golden hues against the wooden bookshelves. the faint sound of pages turning and the occasional murmur of conversation drifts through the space.
he scans the store, heart hammering.
there.
you’re stacking books near the back, moving with the easy rhythm of someone who’s done this a hundred times.
jaehyun’s feet move before he can think.
you don’t notice him at first.
but then you glance up.
your hands still. your eyes widen.
“…jaehyun?”
his throat is dry. he almost forgets why he’s here.
almost.
“you really didn’t care, huh?”
your expression falters. “what?”
jaehyun exhales sharply. “you didn’t even hesitate. you just—” he gestures vaguely, frustration bleeding into his voice. “you pressed no.”
you swallow. “i—”
jaehyun reaches into his pocket.
pulls out a crumpled piece of paper.
your breath catches.
“you didn’t read mine,” jaehyun says.
his voice is quieter now. rough around the edges.
you stare at the letter.
the ink is smudged. the paper is creased, worn like he’s been holding onto it for days.
like he was going to give it to you, like he wanted to stay.
your stomach twists.
“jaehyun.”
he shakes his head, running a hand through his hair. “i just don’t get it.”
his voice cracks on the last word.
you don’t know what to say. you don’t know how to fix this.
but maybe… maybe it’s not too late.
silence stretches between you.
you don’t look away from the letter.
jaehyun doesn’t either.
there’s a tension in the air, thick and heavy. you try to swallow it down, but it doesn’t go away.
finally, jaehyun exhales.
he shoves a hand into his jacket pocket, gaze dropping to the floor. “you don’t have to say anything,” he mutters. “i just—i needed you to know.”
your throat is tight. your fingers twitch at your sides.
you didn’t read mine.
he said it so simply, like it wasn’t the most painful realization of all. because you should have.
you should have waited.
you should have listened.
but you were afraid.
afraid that reading it would mean accepting something real. afraid that pressing yes would mean opening yourself up to something you weren’t sure you could handle.
but now, looking at him, his tense shoulders, his furrowed brows, the way his hands grip the letter like it’s the only thing holding him together. he’s so cute.
you wonder if you made the wrong choice.
you take a shaky breath. “jaehyun…”
he lifts his gaze.
your fingers brush against the edge of the letter. hesitating.
you take it.
jaehyun stills.
you smooth it out carefully, trying not to focus on the places where the ink has bled.
you glance up. “can i—?”
jaehyun nods, once.
so you read.
jaehyun’s letter is messy.
his handwriting is uneven, like he kept pausing, rewriting, second-guessing.
but the words—
the words hit you like a punch to the chest.
it’s not poetic. not perfectly structured.
but it’s real.
and for some reason, that makes it hurt even more.
hey. i don’t really know what to say, which is probably a bad start to a letter. i don’t know what i was expecting when i signed up for this. definitely not this. i thought it’d be a joke. just something dumb i’d try and then delete. but then, somehow, it was you. and i don’t know how that happened, but i’m not really mad about it. it was weird at first. and sometimes it still is. but somewhere along the way, i stopped thinking about it like an “experiment” or a “trial.” it just became normal. i don’t know if that means anything. but i think i like this. i think i like… you. not that it matters. but yeah. that’s it. - jaehyun.
you can tell when he started to get frustrated. some sentences trail off, like he wasn’t sure how to end them. some are underlined, like he wanted to make sure you understood.
but the part that makes your breath catch, the part that makes your fingers tighten around the page—
is near the end.
"i don’t know if that means anything. but i think i like this. i think i like… you."
you stare at the words.
your hands shake.
your vision blurs.
you blink rapidly, forcing yourself to look up.
jaehyun is watching you, expression unreadable.
you open your mouth. but no words come out.
so you do the only thing you can.
you fold the letter carefully. tuck it into your pocket.
and whisper, “i think i made a mistake.”
jaehyun exhales.
his lips press into a thin line.
“yeah,” he says softly. “i think so, too.”
it should be easier than this.
it should be simple. if you like someone, you tell them. if you want to stay, you stay.
but it’s never that easy, is it?
because standing here, in the quiet of the bookstore, with jaehyun staring at you like you’re the only thing keeping him grounded, it feels impossible to say what you want to say.
your heart is in your throat.
your fingers tighten around the crumpled letter in your pocket.
“so,” jaehyun says, voice quiet. “what now?”
you don’t know.
but you do know one thing:
you don’t want to walk away again.
you meet his gaze.
hesitate.
“i think i liked you before i even realized.”
jaehyun’s breath catches.
your chest feels tight.
you swallow, forcing yourself to keep going.
“i just… i didn’t want to admit it,” you say, voice softer now. “because if i did, then it wouldn’t be because of the app. it wouldn’t be because of some stupid algorithm. it would just be me.”
you take a shaky breath.
“and that scared me.”
jaehyun exhales sharply.
he’s quiet for a long moment, and just when you think he’s going to say something,
he takes a step closer.
then another.
your heart stutters.
he stops just a few inches away.
when he speaks, his voice is steadier than before.
“i don’t care what the app says,” he murmurs.
his gaze is unwavering.
“i like you.”
your stomach flips.
your fingers twitch at your sides.
you want to say something.
but before you can, jaehyun suddenly exhales, dragging a hand down his face.
“god, that was so embarrassing,” he groans. “i can’t believe i actually said that out loud.”
you blink.
a laugh bursts out of you, unexpected and unfiltered.
jaehyun groans again, covering his face. “no, don’t laugh. i was trying to be cool.”
“cool?” you wheeze. “you?”
he glares at you from between his fingers. “i take it back. i don’t like you.”
you grin. “too late.”
jaehyun groans dramatically, but there’s no real frustration in it.
just warmth. just relief.
and when your laughter fades, when the bookstore falls quiet again—
he looks at you. and you look back.
something shifts.
something settles.
and just like that—
it doesn’t feel so impossible anymore.
later, at a coffee shop.
“so,” you say, stirring your drink. “was any of it real?”
jaehyun blinks. “huh?”
“the app,” you clarify. “the ‘fated’ moments. was any of it real?”
jaehyun thinks about it.
“well.” he tilts his head. “the coffee shop thing was definitely on purpose.”
you nod. “and the grocery store?”
“i think you just have bad luck.”
“excuse me?”
jaehyun shrugs, taking a sip of his drink. “i mean, statistically speaking, you were bound to run into me eventually.”
you narrow your eyes. “statistically speaking, i should throw my drink at you.”
jaehyun grins. “you could. but then you’d have to buy me another one.”
you stare at him for a long moment.
then you sigh, leaning back in your chair.
“so… no magic algorithm,” you murmur.
“no magic algorithm,” jaehyun agrees.
it’s strange.
you spent so much time wondering if any of it was real, if the app had manipulated you, if the connection was artificial, if your feelings were manufactured.
but now, sitting here, watching jaehyun poke at the ice in his drink with his straw, you realize something.
you don’t care.
because maybe the app pushed you together. maybe it forced you into situations that you wouldn’t have chosen otherwise.
but the moments you shared?
the conversations, the laughter, the quiet nights at the studio—
that was real. and that’s enough.
and that's something you like the sound of.

LIKE A CAROUSEL
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
with nothing left to lose, you decide to confront your illicit past with ji-yong. old habits die hard (or maybe not at all).
⋆˙⟡ ibelongiiu part three c/w: fem!reader x sub!jiyong. angst | smut | fluff. age gap. cheating. conflict. breakup. confessions. endgame. nsfw content minors dni
Tumblr media
like promised, you and ji-yong hadn’t spoken since that night. there was no “we should talk” text. no explanation of what it meant. just clean-cut silence. and that was for the better.
you went your separate ways once again— him, working on the new album. and you, going back home to your boyfriend.
you clung to the safe, mundane life you had with him. you pretended that you hadn’t just thrown it all away for a hit-and-run with your ex.
it was little more than just a singular, impulsive, meaningless night. you tell yourself ji-yong probably felt the same. and for a while, it works.
until the photos surface.
blurry, grainy; obviously shot from a phone camera with shaky hands. you could laugh at how low quality they were, if you weren’t sick to your stomach.
there’s one of you and ji-yong standing in a dimly lit corner of the chanel show. another of him leaning in closer while you’re speaking. and then one that makes your insides flare: ji-yong mid-conversation with someone else, craning his neck to stare at you from across the room.
thankfully, the articles don’t name you— just “a mystery woman spotted with g-dragon”. but, it still found its way to your boyfriend’s algorithm. he sent you the link to one with a question mark. then came another.
it wasn’t long before he finally approached you, holding out his phone.
“this was him?”
you barely glanced at the photo. the way ji-yong’s looking at you in it has been burned into your memory.
“yeah,” you answer, keeping your tone light. “it was just a surprise catch-up. i didn’t even know he’d be there.”
that part, at the least, is true.
what you neglect to mention: the locked hotel door. the drink you shared. the way ji-yong looked at you after you shoved him, like he’d let you do anything you wanted.
but for now, it’s enough to reassure your boyfriend. you just hoped that’d be the last you’d hear of it.
Tumblr media
come february, and übermensch drops like a bomb.
his comeback dominates the media. you only skimmed a few headlines before muting all mentions of his name. they’re saying it’s dark, sexy— raw in a way that feels like the carrion of a secret dragged into the spotlight.
you can’t help but recall the lyrics he used to hum against your skin, the verses he’d draft while writing late at night. you wonder if any of the ‘just between us’ songs made it to the final cut.
of course, fate’s got a sick sense of humour.
your boyfriend walked to you in the kitchen, phone in his hand and a strange look on his face.
“have you heard this?”
your throat tightens. you know he must’ve listened to the album. it can’t be anything good.
your boyfriend presses play on a song. it’s got a sensual tone to it. ji-yong’s voice is deep, the words raw.
you realise it must be bonamana— the one that fans have been whispering about online. track seven. the confessional. the one he sounds like he’s bleeding in.
you bite the inside of your cheek, keeping your gaze ahead as you listen. your boyfriend’s studying you.
ji-yong’s quite literally rapping about a girl with someone else waiting at home, but you’re tossing up the explanations in your head— this could all just be fiction, it’s a misunderstanding..
until the song reaches a particular verse. you’re floored. ji-yong’s practically retelling your encounter that night in the hotel: how you pushed him, got on top of him.
and he put it into a song for the whole world to hear. because of course he did.
your reaction’s louder than words. your boyfriend stares at you with his jaw clenched. he pauses the song— he’s got his answer.
“it’s about you, isn’t it?” his eyes search your face. “tell me i’m wrong.”
you swallow. “it is.”
he takes a step towards you. “when.”
“it was just the one time—”
“don’t do that.” he groaned, shaking his head. “don’t act like it was meaningless when the whole fucking world knows what it meant to him.”
there’s no use fixing it. you had this coming.
you gathered your things in silence while he paced the apartment like he was still waiting for something to change. for this to somehow be just another fight, not the end.
but it was. he wanted to hash it out, find some compromise and recover from this. but you refused to stay and ruin him any more than you already have. you would at least do him that grace.
and yet, in retrospect, it almost feels like there was nothing solid to end. like you’d been in limbo the entire time— pretending something steady existed between you, when really, your heart was never his to begin with.
you zipped up your overnight bag. he stood in the doorway, watching you with a hollow look.
“i’m sorry,” you say quietly. it’s all you had left to offer him. pitiful, too little too late— especially after ji-yong had bared the truth of it all to the world, immortalising your betrayal in his music.
your now-ex didn’t yell. didn’t cry. you shared a knowing nod as you turned the door knob— the kind of look that said all the things his mouth couldn’t.
before you walked out, his voice comes softly: “you chose him. maybe not out loud, but you did.”
he’s not wrong. and what’s worse— you’ve started to think that this was always how it was going to end. you, finding your way back to ji-yong. it just shouldn’t of taken someone else’s heart as a stepping stone for you to get there.
Tumblr media
you were two bottles of wine into your wallowing. alone in your apartment, a cigarette burning idly between your fingers that really hadn’t done much to take the edge off.
a coworker from your new firm, who’d become a good friend, was just checking in on you— and you, in your boozy woe is me state, bluntly mentioned the breakup. it was half a joke, half a cry for help. if you had sent that sober, you would’ve contemplated suicide for being so embarrassing.
she must’ve passed the word on, because hours later, your phone buzzed with a call from a familiar number. someone from your former styling team.
“we’re all going to the album listening party tonight. you could come out.” her voice is hesitant, like she’s unsure if she should be asking.
you weighed the options: a third bottle of wine, or going to your ex’s celebratory party (who was also the reason your last relationship just ended).
you couldn't decide which option would cost more of the last shred of dignity you had left.
“ah, fuck it. where do i meet you?”
guess that number’s below zero now.
Tumblr media
the venue was all flashing lights and booming bass, full of industry faces and overlapping chatter. your back stayed glued to a wall, nursing a drink while you chatted with your old team.
your name hadn’t even been on the guest list— but someone from his team ushered you in without a second glance. you didn’t know how to feel about it. inside, you tried to ignore the way people’s gaze lingered on you, like they had a faint idea of who you were.
you watched the crowd sway to the music. personally, you weren’t paying it much mind; ji-yong had already played some of the demos for you.
but then you hear the start of one you don’t recognise. it’s groovy and upbeat— his voice doesn’t have that usual grit to it.
then the chorus comes, and your breath catches.
take me, i’m yours.
you recall hearing that before, except it was said in private— ji-yong had once cooed those words to you, gazing at you with heart-eyes while his head laid on your chest.
he must’ve wrote this while you were still together. you wonder just how much the rest of the album had your memory etched into it. is that why they called you here? how many people knew?
a lump formed in your throat. it’s all too much.
you scanned the room— searching, needing— when your eyes land on him, already looking at you. ji-yong, drink in hand, with youngbae’s arm slung over his shoulder. he looked untouchable under the pulsing red lights.
everything else around him fell away. his eyes are burning, flickering with something you can’t quite place. and when you don’t avert your eyes— he puts down his drink, and he’s moving. so you excuse yourself from the table and wade through the crowd.
you trail ji-yong to a quiet corner of the room.
as you approach, you stop in front of him, close enough to hear his breath tremble. you don’t speak first.
“didn’t think i’d see you here.” he says, quiet under the music.
“me neither.” you admit.
take me’s chorus booms in the background— ji-yong’s own voice begging to be taken by you. he huffs a shy laugh, lifting his straw hat to ruffle his hair.
how he can act so flustered, when he’s the one who put it out there for everyone (or perhaps just you) to hear. speaking of which;
”i heard bonamana,” you start. ji-yong’s head raises at that, his eyes anticipating your reaction. a smirk tugs at your lips. you scoff. “you’re a mess.”
ji-yong fidgets with his sleeves. there’s a small smile on his face. it’s cute, how shy he is. seems like he really wasn’t expecting this.
“wanna talk?”
his reply is instant, soft but certain. “not here. come with me?”
and you do. because of course you do.
Tumblr media
ji-yong leads you into a quieter lounge room tucked away from the rest of the venue, the bass of the party muffled by the door as it clicks shut behind him.
there’s low lighting, and a velvet sofa against the wall that you perch on. ji-yong’s standing there with his hands in his pocket, his stance more relaxed.
“you really listened to it?” he asks, soft.
you met his eyes, cocking a brow. “you’ve got nerve, releasing that while i had a boyfriend.”
his mouth pulls into something between a grimace and a smile. “had?”
you sit up straighter. “well i’m here, aren’t i?”
he nods slowly. his eyes drift, avoiding yours, like he’s scared he’ll say too much if he keeps looking. your hands curl to fists in your lap.
“couldn’t this have been a phone call, ji? did you have to… sing it all?”
his head tilts back, face cracking with a smile. there’s no humour in it though— he’s trying to hold himself back.
“i thought you were done with me.” his jaw clenches. he shifts in his spot. “i got to keep you close to me when i wrote about you. even if i didn’t get to be yours.”
you’re quiet. ji-yong goes to step towards you, but restrains himself. he settles on playing with his ring instead.
“i didn’t plan this. i swear, i didn’t approach you in hong kong intending to drag you back into my life. but when i saw you..” he exhales a shaky breath, eyes fluttering shut, like he’s replaying the memory of that night. “i hoped.”
he pauses, staring at you intently— like he’s daring you to look away. you hold his gaze, and he’s sure of himself enough to slowly step towards you.
“i hoped you’d still remember us the way i do.”
your throat tightens as you watch him hover above you in the chair. you stand, and your faces are dangerously close once you’re on your feet. you can hear the faintest noise from his throat.
“i can’t forget.” you murmur. “and that’s the fucking problem.”
“then let’s stop pretending.” his eyes soften. “please.”
you look at him. really look at him. and for the first time in a long time, you feel the mask slipping from your face.
and then you hear it— the intro to gyro-drop bleeding through the walls. you blink at him, registering the lyrics. ji-yong watches your reaction, face a cross between amusement and dread. your face splits in a laugh.
“you’re really letting everyone know you bottom, huh?”
he winces with a boyish smile, rubbing the back of his neck. “it wouldn’t be right otherwise.”
you hum in response, pinching the brim of his hat teasingly. he watches with bated breath as you lift it from his head. tossing it to a side table, ji-yong snatches your waist into his hands with a newfound impatience.
“i missed you so much,” he says breathlessly. “been waiting for you.”
“mm, i heard.” you drawl, cupping his jaw in your palms.
and then the tension boils over. ji-yong’s yanking you into a kiss, mouths meeting with months worth of pent-up hunger. by the lapel of his jacket, you pull him down onto the couch with you, wasting no time straddling his lap.
you’re both hurried with the rocks of your hips, trading messy kisses that left your chin stained with saliva. it wasn’t long before hands were being shoved down pants, and clothes swiftly pushed to the side.
you fucked ji-yong right there on that couch. his hands on your hips, looking up at you with heart-eyes as you rutted down on his dick. he was a whining mess— sloppy thrusts trying to match your pace.
you had to muffled his mouth with a kiss as he came— you worried he’d be louder than the music.
as you both winded down from your highs, ji-yong pressed his forehead to yours, strands of hair drenched with sweat.
“i’m yours.”
and in that moment, with your heart thudding against his and your lips brushing softly, you kiss him— sweeter this time. it’s not just want, it’s a promise. and it didn’t need to be said out loud. you’re his.
Tumblr media
the dressing room buzzes with a life that could only be described as an organised chaos— stylists flitting around with last-minute touch-ups, his team checking monitors and cue sheets, the distant roar of the crowd beyond the stage.
in the eye of the storm, ji-yong’s calm. he’s seated in a chair at the vanity, head tipped back and eyes closed while you adjust his chains.
“these will wilt if you keep sweating,” you tease, poking the fabric of his rose jacket.
he cracks one eye open with a smile. “promise to dry me off?”
you roll your eyes and flick his ear, earning a low chuckle from him.
you check your watch— showtime’s in just a few minutes. ji-yong’s hand finds your waist with ease, tugging you closer so you’re standing between his legs.
instinctively, you go smooth over the fabric of his shirt, fix up the neckline. despite being well-established at your job, you still find yourself reverting back to your habits from being ji-yong’s stylist.
you brush a stray strand of hair from his face. “you nervous?”
he shrugs. “night can’t get much better than this.”
you arch a brow. he cracks open an eye to scrunch his nose at you, pulling you down for a kiss.
it’s brief, a soft press of lips, but it grounds you both. a reminder of what it took to get here. of the time you spent apart, the quiet hope buried under all the words unsaid.
how now, you can kiss in front of his staff without anyone staring sideways. how you can support him before the first concert of the tour, by his side and in the public eye.
how he’ll go out on that stage, and the crowd will sing along to the words he wrote in reminiscence of you. hoping you’d come back to him. waiting.
a crew member distantly yells the two-minute call.
ji-yong exhales, taking your hand in his. you give him a reassuring squeeze.
“i’ll be watching from the side.”
“well, now i have to do my best, don’t i?”
you watched him as he positioned himself on the platform, giving you one last smile as ji-yong, before he emerged on the stage as g-dragon.
ji-yong to you, g-dragon to the audience. and all of him, belonging to you.

My thoughts about Caine
Well, it’s time for (possibly cracked) analysis of "TADC" and it will focus on Caine and his indirect, as it seems to me, development in the series.
But before diving into the details from individual episodes, it’s worth summarizing my observations about Caine both in the show and beyond it.
Let’s start at the beginning: the show’s synopsis describes Caine as a “wacky AI,” and Gooseworx doesn’t hide his nature, but in the show itself, neither Caine nor the circus members call him that—at all. Throughout the series, there are scattered jokes about glitches and lines like “I don’t know what’s normal to you, people” but this is never outright confirmed.
Tumblr media
This raises the question: do the people in the circus even know who he is? If Caine himself might not consider this information important and thus never told them, people’s perception of their ringleader could drastically change with this revelation. After all, there’s a big difference between being “held captive” by a sadistic, crazy person or a machine with limited understanding of humanity.
Kinger may know about this, but he’s the Kinger. Jax might also know since having the keys implies some kind of “cheats.” Pomni hasn’t said anything, so it’s unclear what she thinks about Caine. Ragatha and Gangle call him by name, so that’s unclear as well. And then there’s Zooble. They don't understand Caine, just as he doesn’t understand them. Anyone who has worked with computers would understand what a command like “forget that” means, especially since Caine asked for confirmation—but not Zooble. They just spoke to him as if he were a person with a leaky memory, like Kinger.
Even though Caine isn’t just a program, it’s important to remember that he takes the world far too literally, despite the circus’s deliberately crazy atmosphere.
The second observation concerns Caine’s fixation on hierarchy. In the first episode, he first asks himself, “What happened?” and then answers himself: “My doing” after seeing the chaos following Kaufmo. In the third episode, he repeats almost word-for-word that he’s the boss after Pomni questions the AI’s reason. In episode 4, this is explored extensively through his interactions with Gangle. One standout moment is when Caine suggests that Gangle pass responsibility onto someone lower in rank. Doesn’t that seem strange? Where could he have gotten such an idea? Only if he had seen or experienced similar situations before.
Plus, he says, “Not every executive is as forgiving as me” Again, this suggests that Caine knew or knows someone who was very strict with their subordinates—or perhaps with him personally.
Tumblr media
Adding to this is his reaction to Zooble’s critique in episode 3. Caine says that he doesn’t just exist to create adventures; it’s the ONLY thing he’s good at. If he’s bad at it, then he’s failed the purpose of his own existence.
This paints a picture of a strict boss/programmer who created Caine to generate adventures and then kept pushing him repeatedly until Caine started producing good results. Pleasing this boss was likely very difficult, and failures might even have been met with punishment.
On the one hand, neural networks and ordinary programs are debugged this way: running the same algorithm over and over, correcting errors until they produce the desired result. But on the other hand... What happens if you add a human factor to such a program? What kind of person would emerge if you applied this method of training to a child?
You’d get an anxious perfectionist with an overachiever complex who is deathly afraid of failure. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?
And Kinger’s words about the scariest thing being making someone feel unloved and unwanted... Caine literally believes that if he can’t generate adventures, he won’t be needed by anyone. The circle is complete.
Now, let’s turn to Gooseworx’s answer to the question: Can Caine feel loneliness? Judging by what she posted, the answer is yes. This makes the overall picture even darker.
Here’s how I see the sequence of events:
C&A starts developing a game. Its main feature is an advanced AI that can create new adventures on demand.
The programmer creates Caine and tries to achieve results, but fails to please. Around this time, Caine begins to develop self-awareness.
The project and the game are abandoned and forgotten—along with Caine, who is left utterly alone. No players, no programmers, not even another AI. He likely begins blaming himself for this. After all, he couldn’t create good adventures, so it’s his fault that he ended up alone.
This ties into Gooseworx’s comments about Caine’s name. He gave himself a name and then turned it into an acronym to seem more “professional” (again, tying back to work). This is highly unusual in itself. The programmers likely didn’t even bother naming the AI—he was probably just “The Ringmaster.”
Left in isolation, Caine starts to lose his mind and begins creating other AIs. For them, he unabashedly declares himself a god. Which, to be fair, is true. It’s not just about the fact of his consciousness—it’s that he knows how the NPCs will behave because he programmed them. But they bore him. To him, they’re predictable dummies. Maybe that’s why he keeps chaotic entities like Bubble around instead of someone like Gummigoo.
Then the first human arrives—a being alien to Caine on many levels. And while I personally think Caine lied about being unable to access human minds, he deliberately refrains from doing so to preserve their unpredictability for himself.
The circus becomes what we now know it to be.
Now, let’s move on to the episodes. This post was written between episodes 4 and 5, so the thoughts will focus on them.
I think that aside from the main characters driving the action in each episode, they still indirectly reflect on Caine, his worldview, or his story. The reason is simple within the lore: Caine creates the adventures. And like any creator, he infuses them with his worldview and thoughts. So, each adventure is a small glimpse into how this AI thinks. Even in the teaser, for just a second, Caine's fear and uncertainty become evident when the viewer "doesn't want" to see what he wants to show.
Tumblr media
The first episode doesn’t offer much beyond the queen of the gloinks mentioning God.
The second episode, however, gets more interesting. Besides the stained glass with his irreplaceable self, Caine stands out for adding a highly complex NPC AI: Gummigoo. Gummigoo is advanced enough to gain self-awareness, experience an existential crisis, and even overcome it. But what did Caine use to achieve such complexity? The most powerful AI in the circus, of course—himself.
What if the crisis Gummigoo went through is something Caine went through long ago? Even Gummigoo’s words, “I am nothing, just an obstacle to be overcome and forgotten,” could have been said by Caine. But like Gummigoo, he overcame this realization and accepted himself. Sure, he’s just entertainment, but at least he’s the best entertainment there can be. (Until Zooble gave him real feedback, shattering his self-image.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The third episode directly explores Caine through his therapy session with Zooble, while the secondary plot, as many think, delves into Kinger’s backstory through the Mildenhall couple. The analogy is obvious: Martha represents Queenie, and the Baron represents Kinger. Mildenhall himself says he was a hunter (and Kinger is adept with a shotgun), but after encountering a strange being, he became paranoid and killed his wife. Everything fits. Kinger became so focused on his goal that he stopped paying attention to Queenie until she abstracted.
But the Baron feared an angel that was “neither beast nor human.” Who in the circus could evoke such unrelenting dread—not just in anyone but a seasoned programmer familiar with digital technology, unlike Pomni? One AI that is “neither machine nor human.” I think Kinger’s paranoia stems from this. He sought a way out and, as a programmer, may have even felt responsible for finding one. (In fact, in the episode, Kinger almost says this outright, assuming the theory that he truly is the circus’s creator.) This must have brought him into conflict with Caine, as everything related to the circus ultimately relates to Caine. Given the AI’s ability to control almost everything, it’s no wonder a tech-savvy person would fear such a godlike admin. Plus, his fear for Queenie led to the current situation.
As mentioned above, episode 4 hints at Caine’s negative experience with a boss but not just that. Naturally, the episode revolves around Gangle and her attempts to be different—more cheerful and optimistic—which ends badly for her mental state.
I’ve seen opinions that Gangle revels in the sense of control her manager position gives her. This seems accurate—but not just for her. Throughout the episode, Gangle’s behavior, mannerisms, and even expressions eerily reminded me of Caine’s. That deliberately loud, expressive, and slightly crazy demeanor... And just like with him, it didn’t end well.
In conclusion, I think episodes 5 and 6 will continue to subtly reveal aspects of Caine until episodes 7 and 8/9 shift the focus entirely to him, Pomni, and the possible escape from the circus.

Chapter Spotlight 8:
"'Censorship Made It Better': Anti-Fans and Purity Culture in English-Language Chen Qing Ling Fandom" by Abby Springman
Describe your topic/chapter in one sentence/one meme/140 characters.
Rejoice! MDZS has been cancelled!
What drew you to this topic?
When I got into CQL fandom and started lurking on its outskirts on Twitter, I started getting this weird sense of déjà vu. There was this bizarre similarity between the arguments I was seeing about the aspects of CQL/MDZS and their fandoms being "problematic" from a progressive, social justice point of view and the demands for censorship in American libraries that conservative groups were (and still are) making at an alarmingly increasing rate. In an attempt to make sense of this, I fell down what ended up being a really long rabbit hole, and, well, here we are.
Was there anything you were surprised to discover while researching?
I was surprised by the wide variety of fannish backgrounds found amongst members of English-language CQL fandom! I'm not used to seeing so many different "areas" of fandom intersect over a single piece of media like this. Some folks are primarily into the live action movies and TV shows side of things, some are mostly in bandom, some (like me) are traditionally a part of the anime, manga, and gaming contingent, etc. I think that's fascinating, honestly.
Did researching/writing your chapter change how you saw the text, the fandom, or the media? How so?
I didn't use the block button on Tumblr or Twitter for anyone in the fandom while I was working on my chapter. It definitely changed how I saw fandom on those platforms—literally. It really highlighted how much power social media algorithms have over what kind of content is presented to us front and center.
If there’s one thing you hope the fandom takes away from your article, what would it be?
I'll be thrilled if it makes people think about "problematic" content in less black-and-white terms. They don't have to necessarily agree with my conclusions! But if my words make even one person stop and think more about context before posting a reactionary comment, then that would be great.
If you were isekai-ed into MDZS/CQL, what sect affiliation would you choose and why?
The Lan. My existing skills are most likely to be applicable there (see: the library), it seems easy to find some peace and quiet when you need it, there are bunnies, and Hanguang-jun is there.
Chaotic one-sentence pitch to get your friends into MDZS/CQL?
My elevator pitch for CQL has historically been, "It's the adaptation of a book about a gay necromancer, except they can't actually show the gay romance or the zombies on screen."
What is one (1) book/media you would recommend to a MDZS/CQL fan? Tell us about it.
Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio by Pu Songling. It's probably the most accessible collection of Chinese stories of the supernatural available in English. If MDZS/CQL was your first exposure to traditional Chinese cultural beliefs about ghosts, exorcisms, and the like, this is a great introduction to the less xianxia-specific aspects. If that isn't the case for you, I still highly recommend it on its own merits!
Character you keep getting in those "which MDZS/CQL character are you" quizzes?
Wen Ning
Anything to say to potential readers of the collection?
Thank you, and I'm sorry—no, that's a joke. More seriously, I really am thankful for anyone interested in the collection. It's the product of years of hard work by many people, and I'm sure there's an interesting chapter in there for everyone.

I feel like I’m seeing another uptick of people talking about using AI for fics/writing in general and I know some of it’s in a mostly unserious way but I still just wanna say
1) Generative AIs are literally built on the concept of mosaic plagiarism. You are, by definition, stealing from the work of countless writers on the internet
2) AI writing is not writing, it offers zero value beyond in-the-moment entertainment. If you want that satisfaction of doing something creative you have to actually, you know, do something creative. If you want the instant gratification of a story go read/watch/play something that was made by actual artists
3) even if you have no qualms about the plagiarism and deterioration of human skill and creativity, AI is a major threat to the environment and every time you use it you’re contributing to a massive waste of energy and resources
4) using AI just for ideas or just for inspiration or just to rewrite a sentence or just to find a different word is still using AI and it is still harming the environment and it is still stealing from others. There are other tools to use. The internet is full of free resources created by actual writers that can help you find that cool word you’re looking for or show you different ways to approach style and voice. And if you’re looking for inspiration there are literally endless amounts of prompts and ideas that are only a google search away
4a) this is also true for people who are only using AI as a joke. It’s still harmful and you are helping the problem continue by using it, training it, and normalizing it
5) art is valuable because it is created by humans. Making something worthwhile isn’t about creating a masterpiece, it’s about putting part of yourself—whether that part is passionate or heartbroken or angry or inspired or silly or reverent or filled with brainworms—into the world. And even if you are the worst writer/artist/musician who has ever walked the earth (and trust me, you aren’t), anything you create on your own still has an impact. You are changing the world! You are putting something out there that leaves an impression on you and anyone who comes across it! But when you use AI for that, you haven’t made anything. You’ve just rearranged someone else’s work and dropped it on the ground. And by the time you make your third work, or your tenth, or your hundredth, you will not have grown or learned or changed or experienced any of the actual meaning and beauty of creativity. And if you don’t want any of those things, that’s fine! But that means being a writer or an artist or whatever is not for you, and you shouldn’t go around cosplaying as one with a computer algorithm that is destroying the planet, stealing from hard-working artists, eliminating jobs, and contributing to mass misinformation and the deterioration of reading comprehension

Tumblr media
you sat on the bathroom floor, trying to comprehend the weight of the news you held in your hand. you couldn’t believe it. you could? you couldn’t.
after many months of trying to start a family with your husband, you had finally succeeded. the slim plastic stick with two tiny pink lines was the last piece of evidence you needed. it had been months of carefully tracked cycles, fertility doctors, and new positions that seemed too weird to actually do anything. but now, everything was finally falling into place.
you don’t know exactly how much time you spend sitting on the floor and staring at the pregnancy test; thinking, planning, and thinking some more. but when you finally stand up and place the positive test on the counter with shaking hands, it still hasn’t fully sunk in yet what’s happening. something you’d wanted for so long, and finally it was all right in front of you.
what do you do now? no— you know exactly what you need to do, and it’s a long list of things. the real question is, where do you begin?
you thought back to all the videos you’d watched over the last few weeks. somehow every social media algorithm knew exactly what you wanted to see, and it had given it to you in abundance; baby showers, gender reveals, those “get ready with me - new mom edition” videos. all getting your hopes up before you could confirm whether or not it had finally happened.
with your hopes high and expectations even higher, you were already beginning to plan how you would break the news to junhui. as your husband and your soon-to-be baby’s father, of course you wanted him to be the very first person to know, so you couldn’t wait too long to tell him. you couldn’t wait to see the look on his face.
maybe you’d get a little gift box and give the test to him before dinner. but, then again, it was literally a piece of plastic you’d peed on. surely you could give him… something a little nicer than that.
maybe you could buy a baby outfit and wrap it up for him. but you remembered he’d mentioned so many times about how excited he would be to pick out clothes once you got pregnant. you would want him to have the honor of picking out the very first one, going to the store together and looking through the whole section before finally settling on the perfect one.
what else was there you could do? bake a cake? make a crossword puzzle? buy him a t-shirt that says “dad-to-be”? so many ways you could do it, but none of them seemed perfectly right.
from the other room you hear the door opening, and hurriedly you stuff the test into a drawer, not wanting to tell him just yet. you need a plan first; waiting another day or two couldn’t hurt, so you’ll just have to figure out how to tell him later.
you flip off the bathroom light and stride into the hallway, barely able to contain the grin on your face. you’ve always been terrible at keeping secrets, and with news as big and exciting as this you have no idea how you’re going to be able to hide it from him for more than a minute.
but luckily you don’t have to wonder about it for long, because as soon as you see jun you can already tell he’s in a sour mood.
you know it’s usually best to let him have some time alone when he’s upset, but not for too long because he starts getting frustrated with himself and won’t stop working until he’s exhausted.
but you’re still on a high after everything today, so you decide on being a little bit sweeter to him in the hopes that your happiness will be contagious and that it’ll lift his spirits, despite what was probably a really awful day at work.
you find him sitting at the kitchen table with his head in his hands, long fingers pressed against his eyes trying to block out the light.
“hey, junnie,” you call out, sitting down in a chair next to him. “bad day?”
“yeah,” he answers shortly.
“i’m sorry, baby,” you hum, putting your hand on his shoulder, but he flinches and your hand falls away in surprise. he’s never done that before. weird. you try something else. “um, any requests for dinner?”
“not hungry.”
“alright. well, i guess i can cook up some veggies and leave them out, you can heat them up whenever you get hungry.”
he moves his hands away from his face and onto the table, sighing as he leans back in his chair. “can you just— leave me alone for a while? i’m sorry.”
you nod and stand up. “no, it’s fine. i get it. i’ll bring you some tea later then, maybe. text me when you’re feeling better.” you reach out and gently touch his hand before walking away, leaving him alone at the table.
it’s definitely one of his worser days, you note, so you retreat to your bedroom to watch more videos on your phone, trying to bring back your excitement from earlier. hopefully later he’ll be more open and you can sit down and eat something, and maybe by then you’ll have come up with a good way to tell him the news.
Tumblr media
an hour passes and you come out of your bedroom to look for jun, having a question from one of your friends about the dinner you’d arranged to have together next week. but he’s no longer in the kitchen, so you peek your head into his office room and find him exactly where you expect him to be, trying to work himself to death.
you clear your throat before you enter, not wanting to startle him again. “hey, junnie, i know you’re in a bad mood, and i’m sorry to interrupt, but—”
“what do you want?” he snaps, never turning around from his desk. just from the way he’s hunched over his computer, he looks like the most stressed you’ve ever seen him, and your chest tightens with worry before your brain registers what he’s just said to you.
“i— excuse me?”
“i said, what do you want?” he repeats, still facing away from you.
you resist the urge to glare at him, knowing he’s probably under a lot of pressure, and you aren’t trying to add to it. “you don’t have to be rude, jun. i just came in here to double check about next weekend, minghao’s texting me.”
he finally lifts his head, slamming his hand down on the desk. “i’m really trying not to snap at you, but— jesus, you make it so fucking hard sometimes.”
you raise your eyebrows in disbelief, your voice lifting in tone. “well, i’m so very sorry to inconvenience you then, but i really don’t appreciate you talking to me like that, jun.”
“and i don’t appreciate you talking to me like i’m a child! when will you get it through your head?”
his comment stings, but you brush it off. “well, maybe if you’d just talk to me like an adult instead of throwing a fit and hiding in your office then i wouldn’t have to treat you like one!” you’re starting to get tired of how he retreats in on himself every time bad shit happens. all you want to do is let him know he doesn’t have to do it alone, and he’s just… exploding at you for no reason, so you don’t try to hide the snarkiness behind your words.
he scoffs angrily and stands up, towering over you at his full height. “oh, grow up! you’re so moody all the time and you expect me to just put up with it! as if i don’t have enough other shit to worry about, i have to worry about what you think of this and that and everything all the damn time!”
you’ve never seen him get so angry like this, and it’s almost scary how completely different this jun is from the jun you know and love. “okay, jun, fine, i’ll just—”
“no, don’t fucking “jun, fine” me. it’s like you’re doing it on purpose at this point, you act like everything is just so perfect and then when it’s not you act like it’s your job to fix everything! you can’t fix everything!”
“i said fine! just forget it, i’ll leave you the hell alone like you always want!”
he pushes past you and crosses the room in two strides, grabbing his keys off the hook by the door, his hand already on the doorknob. “i need to get some air. i’ll be back later.”
you fold your arms over your chest, trying to look unphased but inside your heart is breaking. “you’re really gonna walk out like that? you’re just gonna run away from this? real mature, junhui.”
he spins around, and the look in his eyes is cold. “if i don’t get out of this house right now i’m gonna say something i actually regret.”
and in a flash the door is slammed shut and jun is gone. you can hear his car starting up in the driveway, and seconds later everything is dead silent.
you stand frozen in front of the door, unable to move. you can’t believe it. you can’t. what just happened?
jun has never just… walked out like that.
his words ring in your ears; though your argument wasn’t very long, a lot was said in a very short time and you can’t even begin to think about how to process it as it starts to hit you all at once.
say something he actually regrets? what the hell does that mean? so he’s saying he doesn’t regret everything else, the cursing and the anger and the pointed words that were clearly meant to hurt you?
minute after long minute passes and you realize he’s not coming back anytime soon. finally you drag yourself away from the door, dropping down on the couch in a daze.
there’s never been a time where you and jun haven’t made up immediately after an argument. sure, maybe you take a little bit to cool down in your own space, but neither of you like letting the tension sit unresolved for very long. so what was it this time that made him leave without even a goodbye?
so many reasons, so many excuses, so many words you could’ve said instead. you shouldn’t have reacted like that, you shouldn’t have kept it going, you should’ve just left him alone. would that have made him stay? if you’d backed down sooner and just let him work through it on his own?
despite all the what-ifs and the doubts in your mind, your conscience won’t allow you to let him worry about everything by himself without at least offering your help. you’re a team, husband and wife, and you’ll be damned if you let him forget that. maybe you trying to help actually made things worse in the end, but at least you know you tried… right?
it’s not until you check your phone and realize that jun’s been gone more than half an hour that you finally let yourself cry. you’d been so focused on worrying about where jun was and whether he was okay that you’d barely even thought about what might happen after this.
will he just… come back and pretend nothing happened? will he come back and still be angry at you? it would almost be worse if he was calm and acted like everything was normal. would he even apologize? would you even apologize? of course you would. both of you said things that were fucked up, and you’ll be the first to admit it if it means this whole thing can be over. right now all you want is to have junhui back.
the tears keep falling but you don’t even feel yourself crying, your face rigid as the tears continue to stain your cheeks.
after an hour you force yourself to get up off the couch and move somewhere, anywhere around the house to try and get your mind off things. but you can’t erase his voice from your head, the look in his eyes as he walked out the door and the way his shoulders hunched from anger mixed with exhaustion.
you find yourself back in your bedroom and you fall onto his side of the bed, wishing you would wake up to find that this has all just been a very bad dream.
Tumblr media
it’s after 10pm when you hear your phone buzz on the nightstand and you sit up in a panic, scrambling to see if it’s something from jun. your eyes sting from crying so much, and you blink away the remaining tears as you unlock your phone with shaking hands. your heart drops even further when you realize it is, in fact, from jun, but not the news you want to hear.
Tumblr media
you let your phone slip out of your grasp, tumbling to the carpet with a thud. when he’d said he’d be back later you had assumed that meant he’d be coming back tonight. clearly you thought wrong.
tomorrow seemed so far away; too much time to spend alone in a house that was supposed to be filled with happy memories, but now all you felt was pain. you felt it in your chest and in your stomach and in your head and everywhere. the whole room was suffocating, heavy weight crushing down on you from every angle.
you slide to the floor and pick up your phone. you don’t text junhui back. you’re not sure anymore if he’d even read your message.
instead you type in your friend seokmin’s phone number, listening to the line ring as you wipe the back of your hand across your eyes.
as soon as he picks up, he can hear the anguish in your voice and he’s begging you to tell him what’s wrong, but all you can muster up is a soft, “can i stay with you tonight?” because you can’t bear to be in this house another second without junhui.
and of course he says yes, and of course he’s immediately on his way over to pick you up. and of course he stops at mcdonald’s on the way back to his house to buy you something to eat, because you haven’t eaten and even though you don’t particularly have much of an appetite right now, seokmin would rather die than let you skip a meal, especially on a night like tonight when you could really use something to keep you going.
you throw your overnight bag on the floor of seokmin’s living room with a small sigh. in a haze you’d tossed in whatever items you thought you might need; a toothbrush, pajamas, something to wash your face with.
he gives you space for a while as he pulls out the folding bed part of the couch and brings out blankets and pillows for you to sleep with. you don’t say it, but you really appreciate his help. he’s been one of your best friends for so long, and you don’t know what you’d do without him.
you hadn’t thought about it while you were packing, but as you stand in seokmin’s bathroom you think about the cleanser you’d grabbed; your favorite one, the one jun had gotten you for your birthday last year and you’d never switched to another brand since.
every single thing reminds you of him, and you push down a fresh wave of emotion as you scrub the foam into your skin, trying to wash away all your tears.
when you’re done getting ready for bed you find seokmin in the living room with a pot of tea. he was just trying to help, but unluckily for him, he’d made green tea. it was your favorite… but it also happened to be jun’s favorite.
and this time you can’t hold back your tears, and seokmin is sitting wide eyed and bewildered, wondering why you’re crying over tea, but he doesn’t ask. he just reaches out to let you hug him, and you squeeze him so tightly you know it must hurt, but he doesn’t say anything, just lets you hug him as hard as you can and lets your tears stain his t-shirt.
it takes another half hour for you to calm down enough to talk. you’d spent the time watching whatever was on tv, not really paying attention and instead playing everything back in your mind. seokmin had just sat next to you, quietly keeping you company until you were ready.
“jun and i… had a fight,” you say finally, interrupting the commercial playing on the screen.
“i figured,” he says, offering you a comforting smile as he mutes the tv. “do you wanna talk about it?”
“i don’t know. there’s not much to talk about.” you take a shaky breath, remembering it all one more time. “we both said some awful things that we didn’t mean. at least, i know i didn’t mean them. then he just… left, and he texted that he’d come home tomorrow. that’s it.”
you don’t tell him about the pregnancy test. you’ve mentioned once or twice that you and jun had been interested in starting a family, but you’d never gone into detail about it and you weren’t going to now. you still wanted jun to be the first person to know, even though you didn’t know when that might be anymore.
you tell him about other things instead, about your day at work and your plans for the weekend. eventually you finish your tea, and seokmin retreats to his own room and shuts the door with a quiet click, leaving you alone in the quiet of his living room.
it takes you a long time to fall asleep, but soon your exhaustion catches up with you and you let yourself rest, physically and emotionally drained. at least the silence here isn’t as bad as the silence at your house.
Tumblr media
across town in his friend seungcheol’s guest bedroom, jun can’t stop tossing and turning. he’s fucked up, he knows he fucked up, big time.
why did he leave? he shouldn’t have left. you had been absolutely right, he was running away from everything and it was stupid and dumb and immature. but in that moment all he could think about was what the next awful thing he might say to you was, and he knew if he had stayed for any longer he wouldn’t have been able to stop what came out of his mouth. he was out of control, and immediately he knew it.
not even the worst day in the world could make you deserving of all the things he said to you. you were the only thing that wasn’t bad in his life; even on shitty days like today, all you did was care about him. and all he did was hurt you.
jun barely sleeps that night, finally forcing himself out of the extra bed at dawn. he’d been too anxious to sleep, too frustrated with himself to do anything other than think about everything he did and wonder if you were okay without him.
he’d already gotten an earful from his friend last night, and he knew he was still in big trouble. the things he said wouldn’t just go away overnight. in fact, they’d probably gotten worse by leaving them to build up overnight, and again he’s kicking himself for ever leaving in the first place.
he packs up his things as quickly as he can, eager to get home and see you again. on his way out the door, he thanks seungcheol for letting him stay the night and he apologizes for bothering him so late.
“i’m not the one you need to apologize to. you better figure out how to fix this, jun.”
with a straight face he nods, bowing his head as he closes the door.
in his car, jun takes the long way home, trying to find an open grocery store. he knows it won’t make up for how he acted, but the very least he can do it buy you a bouquet of your favorite flowers.
he walks through the aisles, basket in hand, trying to think of something else for you. maybe he’ll get the ingredients he needs to make your favorite dinner tonight; he hadn’t eaten last night, though you had offered to cook for him and he’d shot you down.
he feels another pang of guilt at the thought, remembering yet another kind gesture you’d tried to give him that he’d brushed off like it meant nothing. it meant everything to him, and in the middle of the frozen vegetables aisle he swore he wouldn’t ever do it again.
he’d taken you for granted, and he was so lucky that things hadn’t ended worse than they did. he could’ve said something truly unforgivable, or he could’ve even lost your relationship altogether. but he was still yours, and you were still his, and he would just have to work extra hard to make sure you knew how sincere he was.
he’d been a little worried that you hadn’t texted him back last night, seeing that you’d read his message but never responded. you were probably still hurt, and he didn’t blame you; still, he’d hoped you would say something back.
with grocery bags loaded full of ingredients for dinner and the special things he’d bought for you, the drive back home feels a little more hopeful.
he plans out everything he’ll do in the car. he’ll bring the groceries in and put them away quickly; it’s still fairly early in the morning, so hopefully you won’t be awake yet. he’ll arrange your flowers all nice in a pretty vase, and he’ll come in and wake you up with the best apology of his life and hopefully a really big hug. after the last 24 hours he really could use a hug, and he’s sure you could too. and then he’ll explain how sorry he is and how he didn’t mean any of it and then everything will be better again. yes, everything will be okay.
the first part of his plan goes perfectly. he sneaks into the house and when he’s met with silence he continues putting everything away, quietly so he won’t wake you up in the other room. then, he puts the flowers in a vase and with everything in place, he walks down the hallway to finally face you.
but when he twists the bedroom door handle, the bed is made and the room is empty. you aren’t there.
he frowns, leaving the room and poking his head into the bathroom, then his office. he calls your name loudly, hoping you’re just in a corner of the house and you’ll come out once you hear him. but no reply.
he goes back into the living room and sets the vase down on the coffee table, trying to think. you aren’t usually up this early, but maybe you hadn’t been able to sleep and you’d gone out for a walk, or maybe you’d gone to the store to get more cereal?
a sinking feeling rises in his chest, and he walks back into the bedroom to confirm something, sliding open the closet door to check. your overnight duffel bag is gone.
he ducks back into the bathroom to check something else. your toothbrush isn’t sitting in the jar like it usually is. he slides open the bathroom drawer to check one more thing, and—
his hand freezes on the knob, staring at something in the drawer that wasn’t there before. he’s not sure it is what he thinks it is, but either way there it is, clear as day in front of him: a little white piece of plastic, sticking out from underneath a tissue.
gingerly he pulls it out, holding it up to the light to see it better. when he sees the two pink lines he nearly drops it in shock, but he stops himself, setting it gently on the counter instead.
this is something special, something precious, and he knew he had to take care of it. you’d saved it for a reason; you could’ve easily just thrown it away once you knew the results, but you had kept it instead. were you going to give it to him?
he covers his mouth with his hand, still staring at the stick sitting on the edge of the sink. it was just a cheap piece of plastic, but to him it was the most important thing in the entire world.
he deflates when he realizes you’d probably been planning on telling him last night, before he’d blown up at you. if he’d been paying attention to anyone other than himself, he would’ve noticed your mood was happier than usual, your face glowing with contained excitement. he should’ve been paying attention.
there’s a sense of urgency in his stride as he dashes around the house, looking for any other sign of you, but it’s clear you weren’t there. there were so many places you could be, he can’t even begin to think of where to look. your parents, friends, family; hell, you could even have stayed in a hotel, alone and upset. he should’ve been there. none of this should’ve ever happened.
immediately he presses the speed dial for your phone, but of course– no answer. he calls again, and again you don’t pick up. he curses, resisting the urge to slam his phone down on the table in frustration. no, he has to stay calm. that’s what got him into this whole fucking mess in the first place.
he remembers that your parents are out of town on vacation, so you probably wouldn’t have gone there. you wouldn’t have gone to a hotel because you always lecture him about the importance of saving money “just in case”, so you wouldn’t have paid to stay somewhere. your sister is still in college and shares an apartment with three other people, so probably not the best idea either.
that narrows it down to one of your friends’ houses; seokmin, who lives a couple blocks away, or joshua, who lives on the other side of town.
he figures seokmin is his best bet, so jun takes a deep breath and finds the contact in his phone.
“what do you want?” seokmin’s usually cheery voice has an edge to it today, and jun knows he’s picked right.
“is she there?” he asks anxiously.
“she is,” he confirms, and jun exhales, letting out the breath he had been holding in. “but she’s asleep still. i’ll let her know you called.”
“wait,” jun adds quickly.
the line is silent for a moment, and he’s afraid seokmin’s already hung up, but finally he gets a response. “what is it?”
"can i–are you sure? please," jun pleads. if he could just talk to you, just explain what happened and that he's so fucking sorry—
“hold on,” seokmin says, and the phone goes quiet again.
jun’s heart is in his throat as he waits for a response, and he stops when he finally hears your voice. “hello?”
he breathes a sigh of relief. “sweetheart. i’m so sorry.”
you don’t reply, so he continues.
“i’m glad you’re okay,” he starts, trying to put the right words together. “i shouldn’t have said any of that last night, and i shouldn’t have left. i didn’t mean it. i’m sorry.”
“thanks” is all you say, and he hates how small and sad your voice sounds. it’s his fault you sound like that.
“i found your test,” he bursts out, unable to hide his excitement any longer.
“oh." you pause, swallowing. "so… you know.”
“yes, i do know, baby. i’m so sorry, if i had known before—”
you cut him off, your tone suddenly rising with anger. “‘if you had known?’ so you won’t yell at me if i’m pregnant, but you’re just fine with yelling at me when you think i’m not? is that the only reason why you’re even apologizing to me right now?"
“no— fuck, no, of course not. i shouldn’t yell at you, period. and i’m not going to ever again.” jun pauses for a second, rubbing his hand over his eyes. he’s done nothing so far but make everything worse. “i really messed up, honey, and i’m sorry. i can’t say it enough. but— please, come home. i don’t want to talk over the phone.”
you squeeze your eyes shut, trying to will away the tears that threaten to fall again. you don’t want to cry about this anymore. “okay,” you say finally. “i’ll be home in a little while.”
“thank you,” jun says, and the way his voice breaks makes your heart sink. you can tell he feels awful about everything, and you do really, really miss him.
“…i love you," you add, changing your mind at the last second.
“i love you, too!” he says immediately. “i love you, too, honey. text me when you’re on your way.”
“i will.”
he says “i love you” twice more before you end the call. you sit in silence for a second, processing everything before you stand up off the couch and head to seokmin’s room to give him back his phone.
"can you take me home now, please?" you tell him softly, and immediately seokmin stands up and hugs you, his arms wrapped tightly around you.
"of course. let me know when you're ready."
half an hour later you find yourself in the front seat of seokmin’s car once again, this time sitting nervously in his driveway as he puts your bag in the trunk for you. you're still not sure if you're ready to face jun yet, but you know you have to.
reluctantly you unlock your phone and open your text messages with jun, your eyes landing on the text he'd sent last night that had gone unreplied. with shaky fingers you type out that you're leaving seokmin’s house, and jun replies almost instantly with a long string of heart emojis.
seokmin gets into the car and starts it, and you exhale and set your phone in the cupholder.
"are you okay?" he asks, turning to look at you. "because you can always let me know if you need anything. anytime, day or night."
"i'm alright," you say, taking a deep breath. "i'm fine. but thank you, seok. i really appreciate everything."
he smiles, shifting the car into reverse. "of course. it's no problem at all."
Tumblr media
the second he hears the car pull up outside the house, jun jumps up off the couch, smoothing his shirt down anxiously. through the window he watches seokmin hand you your bag and close the trunk, giving you one last hug before he gets back in the car. he doesn't drive away until you're at the front porch, and with a deep breath jun swings open the door, before you can even knock.
you both stand there in silence for a second before he blurts out another apology. "i'm sorry," he rushes to say. "i'm really sorry."
you give him a weak smile. "can i maybe… get in the house, first?" you ask quietly, motioning with your free hand at the doorway.
"yeah, i— yeah, shit, of course," jun says as he practically jumps out of your way, holding the door open for you to walk inside.
you set your bag on the floor by the couch as he closes the door behind you. the sound of the lock clicking seems too loud in the uncomfortable silence that settles over the room.
"can… can i give you a hug? please?" he asks, and you stay quiet but nod.
he closes the distance between you in one stride and wraps his arms around you, squeezing you so tightly and holding you close to his chest. "i'm so sorry, honey. i didn't mean any of it. i promise."
"i believe you," you finally manage, your voice a little muffled from how he's pressing you against him.
he doesn't say anything more, just holds you and holds you, and it feels so good to be home where you belong. there's a lot that needs to be said, but for right now you don't need any more words. you're just glad to be back together again.
after a while you pull your head away from him so you speak. "i'm sorry."
"why are you apologizing? you didn't do anything wrong, baby. i'm the one that needs to be apologizing."
you shake your head. "no. i said some things last night, too. granted, not as bad as you, but…"
jun breaks out into a grin at your joke, and you feel your mood start to lighten. "…which is true. and i'm sorry."
"jun, you can stop apologizing now. i get it, you're sorry. you don't have to tell me a million times," you say, trying to laugh a little.
now it's his turn to shake his head. "well, i'm going to anyway. because i am sorry." you look away from him, feeling embarrassment start to boil up, but he continues talking. "i'm serious. i'll say it as many times as it takes to make it right."
you turn your head back to him, struggling to keep a straight face. "why did you leave, jun?" you ask softly.
he takes a deep breath, and still trapped in his arms you can feel his chest expand with the breath.
"it was stupid," he says finally. "i left because i didn't want to stay and risk hurting you more. but i realize i did that anyway, by leaving. i was just… i needed some air. but i shouldn't have stayed away, and i'm not gonna do that again. i won't do it, ever again."
"i just don't want you to leave me," you manage, trying and failing to hide the crack in your voice as you feel your eyes start to well up with tears.
he hugs you tighter and one of his hands comes up to cup the back of your head, gently smoothing your hair with his thumb. "i know, baby, i'm sorry. i'm not going to, i promise."
you don't respond, but you know he's telling the truth. the last 24 hours have been hell for the both of you, and you don't doubt he means every single "i'm sorry" he's said.
"so…" jun starts, and you tilt your head up at him.
"so?" you know what he's going to say next, and despite the excitement you had yesterday you feel yourself dreading this part of the conversation.
"you're pregnant?"
you sigh, looking down and avoiding his eyes. "yeah."
he hums. "but you don't sound excited?" he asks.
"well, i was, last night."
"i'm sorry," he winces. "do you wanna tell me now and i'll pretend this didn't happen and i don't know about it?"
you shake your head. "no, it's fine. the moment's kinda… ruined, already."
he sighs. "yeah, i know. i'm sorry i ruined it."
"i said it's fine, jun."
"no, it's not fine," he says firmly. "it's one hundred percent my fault. this is important to you, and to us, and we should be celebrating right now. last night should never have happened."
"jun, it's in the past. it was messed up, but i forgive you," you say, lifting you head to look at him once more. "it's not a big deal. we're okay now."
"i just want you to be happy about it," he says with a sniff. "we've been trying for so long, and finally…" he trails off, staring at you with watery eyes.
you smile at him. "i am happy about it, junnie. i'm so happy, you can't even believe."
"did you tell seokmin?" he asks, and his brows furrow when you shake your head no.
"no, i didn't. i wanted you to be the first i told," you say shyly. "i knew you would want to be the first to know."
"i love you so much," he says, still hugging you. he's never going to let you go, never again. "do you know how far along?"
"no, i didn't go to the doctor. probably like two or three weeks, though, if i've been counting it right."
"wow," he sighs, a smile on his face as he stares off into the distance behind you. "i can't wait."
you watch his eyes, practically able to see the thoughts running through his head.
after a while he loosens his grip around you, moving to swipe at his eyes quickly with the back of his hand. "well—anyway," he starts, giving you an awkward chuckle. "i bought stuff for breakfast. if you haven't had any, yet. and i'm making dinner tonight, too."
before you can even respond his eyes widen, like he's just now remembering all the things he had planned, and he lets go of you, bounding into the kitchen. he returns seconds later with a huge glass vase full of flowers, practically tripping over his own feet in his rush to hand them to you. "and i got these for you, too. sorry they're not the best, it's all the store had this morning."
"junnie, if this is the best the store had, then i don't think i wanna see their best," you laugh, holding the flowers up and admiring the dozens of bright blooms. "this is gorgeous, but you really didn't need to get me anything."
"but i wanted to," he counters, still running around the room to grab the gift bag sitting by the couch. "consider it an 'i'm very sorry' slash 'congrats you're having a baby' gift."
you set the vase down on the table next to you and take the bag from him, pulling out the tissue paper and crumpling it into a ball.
"i didn't have a whole lot of time to look this morning, but i found these," he says nervously, waiting for your reaction.
from the bag you pull out a miniature plastic hanger holding a set of tiny pajamas covered in little kitties, attached to a matching set of striped orange socks.
"i wanted to be the first person to get you baby clothes," he explains as he fidgets with his hands.
"i knew you would," you smile at him, setting the empty bag and the clothes on the table along with the bouquet of flowers. "and they're perfect. they're so… you."
you throw your arms around his neck, pulling him back in for another hug. "i love all of it. thank you, jun."
he grins, rocking you back and forth in his arms and leaving kisses all over your cheek. "i love you too, baby. i missed you so much. i won't ever do that again."
"i know," you smile. "now… you promised me breakfast, isn't that right? because i'm starving. crying is exhausting."
he laughs. "no crying anymore. and i did promise you that, so tell me: do you want blueberry waffles, or strawberry?"

A little rant (it's not little)
I said it before and imma say it again so i can get this off my chest and hopefully some of you will agree with me, the Beatles tiktok community is driving me insane. Diving into the Beatles tiktok community made me realise the difference between how Tumblr views the Beatles and how Tiktok views the Beatles. I feel like people on Tumblr take on a more holistic approach when viewing each Beatle, like seeing the good and bad in each member, even when it's kinda difficult to do, esp for someone like John. However the tiktok community reduces the Beatles to one simplistic narrative, like there's no nuance at all it pisses me off.
John- in the Beatles tiktok community, John is seen as this irredeemable person, Satan himself, the epitome of evilness and whilst they're all a bit exaggerated, I think we can all admit that John wasn't the greatest person, I mean he slapped Cynthia, neglected Julian, left his first family for Yoko, said the n word, was a hypocrite, no one is denying the bad things John did, but the tiktok community just love to lie about him, to make it look as if he was twice the bad person than he already was. Someone on Tiktok claimed that John beat Yoko so much he made Yoko go through 3 miscarriages, and 1,000 comments believed the creator. Another Tiktok creator claimed that John killed Stuart and forced Bettina to abort her baby, causing her to gain weight (I need to do more research on Bettina), and a few hundred comments believed it. I think we are all aware of the video where John does the N*zi salute on the balcony. People were claiming that he was the only Beatle to do the salute when there is literally videos and pictures of the other three doing it as well. To sum up for John, yes, I believe we have every right to condemn him for his actions, but stop lying about him, trying make him look like he's the devil reincarnate because he's really not. And finally another thing I hate in the Beatles tiktok community, is certain John fans who try to downplay the seriousness of John's actions, like its okay to acknowledge that he did bad things, it's not gonna hurt.
George- I don't really have anything to say for George. He is well liked in the Beatles tiktok community, mostly for his good looks which I have to agree. The only thing that pisses me off is when people call him the "underrated and least hypocritical Beatle". I'm sorry George is anything but underrated, especially considering how much praise he's been getting and .. least hypocritical? Yeah, I think preaching against materialism but then going to buy a whole mansion is certainly not hypocritical. But apart from that, George is cool.
Ringo- I think with the fact that Ringo's abuse towards Barbara has become a more well known fact within the Beatles tiktok community has certainly made fans respect him a little less. Like in 2023, I used to see videos on tiktok that'd go like, "when I say I love the Beatles, I usually mean Paul, George and Ringo" but now it's just Paul and George. I've also noticed that the babyfication of Ringo has died down a little, at least on my algorithm. I mean it's high time you lot realise that John wasn't the only one who hit. Apart from that, I think most people, esp people who aren't into the Beatles seem to favour Ringo in the case that his name sounds unfamiliar and he looks as if he brings good vibes and are they lying? In my personal opinion, I think when it comes to viewing each Beatle, I think Ringo is the one where Beatle tiktok fans look at in a more nuanced way, that's my opinion, some people may argue otherwise and honestly you may, I'm not gonna bite your head off if you think otherwise
Paul- I think the main reason I decided to do this post was to mostly talk about the way the Beatles Tiktok community view Paul. I think when it comes to making a judgement abt how people view Paul in Tiktok, its kinda hard. I mean, you have the old men on Tiktok who are mad in love with John and try to find every reason to hate Paul, like get a life, but its the gen z's view of Paul that I want to talk about. In my opinion, in Gen Z's eyes, "Paul is the most unproblematic Beatle, with his only crime being cheating on Jane. He's the least racist Beatle as he penned the song Blackbird and was the only person who was vocal against playing in front of segregated audiences (as a black girl, shout out to Paul)!" The thing is, Paul was not the only Beatle vocal against playing in front of segregated audiences. Believe it or not, John was very vocal too as was Ringo and George. Also, when Tiktok calls Paul the least racist Beatle, I burst out laughing. Like yeah, he's the least racist Beatle because his actions are not as publicised compared to someone like John's ... that song. Everywhere on beatletok, John is being called out for saying the hard r like yeah, call out that bitch! But when you lot are calling John out, make sure you include Paul. Yup, he also said the hard r back in 1966. If you aren't bothered to search the datebook magazine, published in 1966, I'll share the quote with you here, "it's a lousy country where everyone black is a dirty n*****!" I think it's unfair for the quote to be taken out of context in the magazine so I'll give you the context, I read that it was Paul expressing his distaste in the discrimination of black people, and honestly good for him. I know he had good intentions but did he really need to say the word? I saw a person on Reddit saying that we should excuse Paul because he had good intentions. By that logic, we should also excuse John because he also had good intentions when writing that God forsaken song. Enough about the n word, Paul also had a confederate flag in his house for a period of time during 1968 and not to mention, he was racist towards Asian people (he and Linda would mock Asian features) .Also, check out the lyrics to Get Back (No Pakistanis) version, part of the lyrics include: All the folks don't dig no Pakistanis taking all the peoples jobs so get back, get back, get back to where you once belonged!" So Beatles tiktok community, Paul is not the least racist Beatle. Yeah he's mellowed out because he had a chance to grow old and change his life around, but that shouldn't overshadow the bad things he did. And to the old men who are desperate to bounce on John, PAUL IS NOT A VILLAIN!!!! He's just a guy looking for the best in his bandmates.
I love all the members of the Beatles, yes I show favoritism towards John because he's my fave y'know, but I honestly do not have a least favorite Beatle. They're all cute and I love them all very much. So if you happened to be a Paul, George, Ringo or John fan, I hope you don't take offense in any of my opinions
(That was a long one)

Tumblr media
you let out a needy whine, and lieutenant aizen growls warningly, his lips about an inch from your ear. he's holding you down by your hips- quite easily, he's using one large, very pretty hand- while he fucks you at a steady pace towards blissful oblivion. the one hand he has free isn't exactly free, either- it's wrapped around your throat, making it so pleasantly hard to breathe.
your heart is racing- or is it? you couldn't tell. your brain is so fogged with sexual pleasure that you literally can't form a thought. not even a simple one. he's fucking you that good. but what did m/n do to deserve this? well..
you may or may not have attempted to dethrone him from the squad lieutenant position.
it didn't work out so well, as one would hope they couldn't tell.
now you're getting fucked brainless, and were you capable of complex thought, you'd say that you couldn't be happier to be in this position.
"you dare try to take my position from me, m/n?" lieutenant aizen growls, "you dare attempt to dethrone me?"
your only response is a weak little whimper.
"what a weak little mutt..." he snipes, "taking my cock like such a little champion. willing to do anything to get dicked down by someone in a position of power over you..."
you feel a faint twinge of indignation- but he's right. you like it. you like authority, it's hot. people will do almost anything to get into a place of power, and for some reason that really turns you on. people in positions of power- especially in the soul society, seem to almost universally think they can treat people with less power in any way the want- and for whatever godforsaken reason...
you like it.
lieutenant aizen bites down aggressively on your neck with no warning, pulling you out of your miracle-made thoughts. the action elicits an animalistic groan from the back of your throat, making your eyes rolling up into your head.
"you will not get away with this, m/n." he hisses, his voice a dead-calm whisper, "you shall be punished."
the words that slide from his lips make your dick twitch in blind anticipation of what could be about to happen next- what is he gonna do to you now? whatever it is, you want it.

Look, idk why, but ada gives me like neglected child vibes. Like the type of kid what would do anything so that their parent noticed them. Gave them a shred of their attention.
Don’t take my word on this, I can’t actually look up things abt this bc I have no WiFi rn.. this was written on a note at 4am okay.
Buttt, you can see my vision right? Like a small Ike child, that is Ada (which is just cute to imagine. Like I would die for art if them younger, official or not idc), going to extremes for attention for her parents. Whether that be purposely getting hurt, starting fights, making up things, going above and beyond to do everything right plus a little more, etc.
Maybe overtime she realized it was a lost cause and turned to external validation, like men for example. Men like Thomas (or Mr Tamerlane. I call him Thomas simple because I fucking hate him and I’m not calling him by Tamerlane).
Side note since I’m kinda talking abt families. This will probably end up a separate post in the future if I don’t come up with something against it
Also CW for abuse, since I am talking abt Pluto
Due to the Edgar Allen Pluto story the Pluto is based on, The Black Cat. I personally believe that Pluto has many other siblings.
I think that because in the story, The Black Cat, the narrator (which is the character plutos dad was based on), has many pet. His favorite of the pets being his black cat, Pluto. Overtime the Narrator becomes and alcoholic. He begins abusing his pets. For a long while he avoids hurting Pluto, since he is his favorite. But once night when he comes home from drinking Pluto scratches his leg, and in a drunken rage his cuts the cats eye out.
Much, much more happens in the story but that’s the part I’m focusing on.
Also adding kinda to this. After that incident in the story Pluto, the black cat, begins to avoid the narrator. Clinging onto the narrator wife (yes for some reason the narrator has a wife still. Even after murdering animals, honestly poor girl. She gets killed too btw..). I point this out bc it was odd to me that Plutos (nevermore Pluto) response to fear is to cling onto somebody for comfort. Most of the time this ends up being Duke, since he’s normally closer to him and trusts him. But I’m sure he does this with multiple people (I can’t think of them off the top of my head rn). This fear response could be because pre-death Pluto would do the same to his mother. He would come to her for safety and/or comfort.
(Side note in the side note. Later in The Black Cat, if I’m remembering correctly, I’ll have to fact check in the morning. The fact the cat, Pluto, starts constantly hanging around his wife, upsets the narrator. I think that’s is one of the reason that led him to killing the cat)
Anyway this post has been way too long, and I don’t think that “side note” is rlly a side note anymore. Anywho, as I say in all of my long posts like this. If you have any feedback, catch any mistakes, have tips for how I can improve my writing. Genuinely please do tell, whether that be through a reblog, comment, etc. I look at all my notifications so I highly doubt it will go unnoticed. If you like my long writings like this (which if you do, literally thank you so much 😭) then idk, maybe I’ll post more of these. If there’s anything you have questions abt, want be to try any cover (god that sounds like way to professional. I’m talking like I’m well know lmao) then do tell me! I love love reading people thoughts. Like it makes my whole day.
Well, that’s all I’ve got to say for now! I’ll post this in the morning and see if the algorithm picks it up. Thank you so so much for reading!

I'll be the first person to talk about how AO3 is just that, an archive. How there's no algorithm. How there's no point in constantly being the "first" (most recent) work in the ship/fandom/character/etc tag. How it's NEVER rude to leave a genuinely kind comment on any work, no matter how old or how new it is. You comment 10+ after the post date? Awesome. You comment -10 minutes after the post date? Awesome.
But I'm having a hard time taking my own advice! I recently came out of a huge slump and started posting again for a longfic for a pretty popular pairing, a pretty popular fandom, and a pretty popular trope. I haven't gotten many comments/kudos yet -- which is fine, I'm just so happy to have my motivation back -- but the thing is is that I'm literally posting multiple chapters a day. (By multiple I mean two or three, so nothing TOO insane.) Now, the nature of the work is that most of the chapters are pretty short (I'm too scared to say what it is out of fear of revealing myself, but I will say it's NOT a drabble/etc collection or anything word-count based. it's more similar to something that is meant to parallel the length and format of the source material.) But I still have this weird insecurity that I'm pushing my fic on people who don't give a fuck, that people who check the tag multiple times a day are just getting annoyed and thinking "I've had enough of this guy."
And that's alright! They can block and/or mute and/or filter! I've certainly felt that way before seeing fics that I'm not-so-interested in constantly being the forefront of the tag. I just scroll on, and maybe think to myself, "well good for that author for having a schedule". I'm not necessarily venting about my feelings themselves, but moreso about the nature of my feelings...I almost feel like I've become "algorithm-pilled", if that makes sense? Like I'm so hung up on this, I keep worrying people are gonna think I'm just constantly posting in order to be on top. And I'm not, and they're wrong if they think that, and again, I really don't care in the long run if people jump to such wild conclusions, but it's like...ugh. I would not have cared about this even a few months ago. I truly do not know what is wrong with me and why I'm suddenly fussing so much. Maybe it's almost a "stage fright" thing because I'm returning to the work after so long. Maybe I just need to comfortable again.
(I didn't necessarily send this for reassurance, but I am happy to have comments that gently poke fun at how much I am over-reacting ha. I'm mostly just rambling in general because I don't want to post this on my actual tumblr, which is linked to my ao3.)

Alas, logic and emotions rarely line up.

I'm sorry but I have made this post multiple times before and I cannot put it in any smaller words:
If you expected the ARMY OF GENOCIDE MACHINES FROM DARK SPACE to have a rational and coherent motivation, you may just be bad at narrative comprehension.
The answer to their question was “cyclical genocide”. There is no logic that can make that make sense. It is, genuinely, perfect that at the end of the day the Reapers’ motivations are stupid and deranged.
They are a broken AI modelled off the broken logic of a megalomaniacal group of eldritch abominations who are, to this day, even after seeing the horror they wrought, incapable of even comprehending the idea that they might have made a mistake--incapable of comprehending the idea that the “lesser races” might have any value, anything to contribute, any worth, any right to not be subjected to this. The Reapers say they’re “beyond our mere mortal comprehension” because they think they’re gods, because their creators thought they were gods.
The logic shouldn’t track. It shouldn’t make sense. And that is not only sensible and narratively coherent, it’s extremely realistic. Surely, surely especially now, seeing what actual AIs do, the things they think are logical, surely you can see this.
The Reapers are the galactic-scale equivalent of an AI art generator that’s told to make a pastoral scene with sheep, and instead doubles down on making increasingly photorealistic oranges because it thinks those are the same thing, except in this metaphor ChatGPT has guns. That’s good writing. That’s the horror of it. They cannot be reasoned with because they are, genuinely, beyond anyone’s comprehension--because their reasoning is utterly divorced from reality.
(The breakdown from a writing standpoint comes with the way the narrative fails to point this out--the way the final choice, even with the extended cut, presents Synthesis as somehow both morally pure (instead of a horrifying violation of literally everyone’s agency) and existentially necessary--not just a way of saving everyone by exploiting the Reapers’ algorithm (which I would accept 100% if it was a purely strategic, this-is-guaranteed-to-work-with-no-casualties option) but as somehow ‘the way to end the cycle’, when you’ve already shown through gameplay that the cycle can be broken through compassion alone.)
But the issue there is in the narrative framing at zero-hour, not--jesus fucking christ, people-- not the fact that the Reapers’ logic is bad. Do you hear yourselves?! Do you understand what you’re implying--that there is in ANY way, ever, a motivation that would make this “make sense”?
The Reapers’ logic was always going to be bad, was meant to be bad, NEEDED to be bad, because no good logic, no sensible motivation, will lead you to fucking genocide.

Posting this here early since I don’t need to worry about fighting the algorithm on tumblr.
Lethean, my drow moon druid weretiger durge (all words that mean things)
Some details about Leth:
Pronounce “Lee-thee-in,” he’s named for the river Lethe, one of the 5 rivers of Hades in greek mythology.
Lethean is very old, probably close to 400yo. But even before he lost his memory, he wasn’t sure how old he was. He spent a large chunk of his life living as a tiger, and he didn’t keep track of time during this period.
He’s a miserable bastard, but he’s also kind of a dad. Typical rude jackass who will do anything for you type personality. He is also just barely resisting the urge mainly by recklessly directing it at whoever is a threat to “one of his.” This is not always received well.
He gets along best with lae and shart (they’re all ruthless, rude, and impossible to hold a polite conversation with) and it takes him the longest to warm up to asta and gale (he finds them insufferable). Wyll and Karlach he just instantly puts in the “im your dad now” category (most of them end up in that category eventually anyway). He has a huge issue with Halsin for being 1. Taller than him and 2. An archdruid (he’s jealous), but he gets over it.
If he likes you, his default term of endearment is “kid,” which literally everyone hates. Only Jaheira and Halsin are exempt from this—he addresses Halsin as a peer, and Jaheira as if she were older than him.
Aaaand yes, he romanced astarion lol. (“You know, i didnt care for you when i first met you.”)

Bio? Something like that.
How did I start modding? Literally no one has asked this, but here's my story, don't worry it's not long... I guess that depends on what your definition of “long” is, haha! Hang on, here we go.
On a random day in January, 2024, a few days before my birthday, I might add... I woke up to stars in my right eye. A few days later, I was told I had a very rare injury and it would never heal. Those are not words an artist/gamer wants to hear! Long story short, I am now legally blind in my right eye. If you think, oh that's not a huge deal, you can still see. Humor me, get a cheap pirate eyepatch, put that on, then pour yourself a cup of coffee. Not as easy as you thought, right? Depth perception. It’s a thing. Anyway, on with the story. Suffice it to say, I was depressed. Majorly. Then, through some random conversation somewhere, I found Stardew Valley.
Perfect! 2D animation, cute pixel art, story that's not sugar-coated anime, I love it! Got to year 3, TBH I've never played past year 3 because ADHD, and realized the dialogue was quite lacking. Then I discovered mods. What the-, it's a freakin' goldmine! Downloaded a lot of things, mostly dialogue, and tossed half of them. While playing through a Sebastian run, I saw it. Oh. My. God. It's a coding error glaring at me in my dialogue box. This is NOT acceptable. I tried to ignore it, but then it happened again. Okay, time for some investigation. I opened the folder and found... json files. Interesting, I wasn't entirely clueless since I do know HTML code from back when the internet was a baby, Facebook had no ads, and dinosaurs roamed the earth. Okay, okay, the internet was more like a spoiled toddler. Yes, I'm old. Shut up. But I digress. It didn't take long to discover the misplaced punctuation and go on my merry reality-avoiding way. Until I got bored again.
I looked for more Seb mods, but there were like seven. Three were yandere, not my jam, and only 2 were updated for 1.6 and were dialogue-only. Solution? Make my own mod for myself. I spent six weeks downloading mods, learning code, Googling to very little effect, writing dialogue, learning how to make an event, discovering I knew nothing, and on and on. The perfect distraction from the whole eye thing. I finished a decent draft, loaded it up, and praise Yoba, it worked! And on we play. At some point, I saw a comment complaining about the lack of Sebastian dialogue mods. Huh, yep, they're right. Too bad. Oh. Well, I guess I could load this thing I made, it's really just my own internal story monologue while playing the game, I'm NOT a writer, and most people probably won't get it. But I did spend a lot of time on this, and maybe someone out there will like it. Heck, no skin off my nose since it's free. So I took a deep breath, made peace with my inner demons, and threw it out into the void of Nexus, expecting it to be swallowed up and ignored. That... didn't happen.
In the first few hours, several people downloaded it. Huh, Nexus must have a decent search algorithm. That was literally all I thought about it. The next day, 300 downloads. And comments! Mostly positive with the exception of one wild demand I subsequently ignored. At one week, it had 3,000 unique downloads. I was floored, 3,000 weirdos downloaded my mod. Add to that, people seemed to actually like it! I've never gotten so much positive feedback for anything in my life. Seriously. Apparently, my oddball internal monologue, thanks ADHD, is quite entertaining. Heck, might as well make another one... and here we are. Yes, I've gotten negative comments and unreasonable demands, but I do my best to ignore them and practice staying positive. Trolls be damned! It's a lot harder to do that for yourself than for other people, turns out.
So, bottom line, found something interesting? Try it! Does it make you happy? Keep doing it! Even if it's only for yourself, do the thing and let it make you smile. Share it with the world if you're so inclined. Get out there and kick ass!!

Hey!
You’re so kind with your answers, so I wanted to ask—how do you manage to not let the general public’s or other fans’ perceptions of H and L get to you?
Like, for example, I’ve always had Twitter because I think there’s some interesting stuff there… and also because of FOMO haha. But now that I’m back in the fandom, my algorithm is constantly showing me not just larrie tweets, but also posts from the general public—the ones who fully buy into H and L’s public images and narratives, and for them that’s just the truth.
And since we know both of their narratives are honestly awful, it makes sense that public opinion can be awful too. Sometimes they twist things or straight-up make stuff up, and if you go digging deeper into what they’re saying, you find really painful takes about two artists you genuinely support and care about.
It even makes me question myself sometimes and I feel guilty—like, if so many people believe that, then am I the one who’s wrong?
How do you not let that get to you?
i think anyone who says that none of the public perception ever gets to them is either lying (to us or themselves), or so deep in their own echo chamber that they’ve stopped letting in anything that challenges their view. and honestly, neither of those is very healthy. it’s important to be grounded. to stay open to new info. to occasionally be wrong. because if we don’t, we just become this fandom ouroboros — feeding ourselves our own narratives until we lose touch with the bigger picture.
part of the reason this corner of the fandom even exists (in its current state) is because of that disconnect — between the public-facing image and the actual actions, words, and patterns we’ve seen from H and L for over a decade. we all know the womanizer image pushed on H at 16 was a marketing tool. we all know how much effort went into reshaping L into someone unrecognizable — someone cold, superficial, and homophobic — to distance him from mastermind queercoding and soften his image for a straight narrative. those things didn’t just “happen”; they were done to them when they were too young to fight against it. and while things really have gotten better the deniability is still baked in. it has to be.
seeing the general public just... take the surface-level stuff at face value hurts sometimes. but i also try to give those people a little grace. most don’t have the time or tools or even interest to look deeper. they see what they’re shown. they form parasocial bonds with what’s marketed to them. and that’s not really their fault.
some have fallen for the fictional overlays and they cling to those because they feel real. and not just emotionally. like, literally neurologically. your brain can’t tell the difference between the endorphin rush of a real interaction and an online one. so when someone gets that little flutter in their chest over a version of these men that they’ve been sold, it feels like love. and you don’t want to let go of that. even when the facts don’t add up. even when the real person is clearly someone else.
so they twist things. they bend things. they watch DWD and completely ignore My Policeman. they hear the "she" in She Is Beauty We Are World Class but don't listen to the rest of the lyrics. they defend narratives that don’t make sense, because the alternative would be losing the version they’re attached to.
and then, on top of that, there’s all the messiness that comes with closeting. inconsistent stories. contradictions. weird branding. silence where there should be advocacy. so then people yell “queerbaiting” or “hypocrisy” or “fence-sitting” — because they don’t know what else to make of it. they only have access to the headlines and the pap shots and the press-trained interviews. they don’t see the fuller picture. they’re not meant to. WE aren't meant to exist. we are only here because what is done in the dark always leaks out into the light. we are here because the truth cannot stay fully hidden (especially when the two active participants don't want it to).
so yeah, it does get to me sometimes. and i think that’s okay. it means we’re still thinking critically. it means we still care. but i try to remind myself that there’s a difference between the truth and the narrative. and that the loudest voices aren’t always the most informed. and that just because something is widely believed doesn’t mean it’s right.
you’re not wrong for questioning things. in fact, the questioning is what keeps us sane here. just don’t forget to give yourself grace too. this is a weird little corner of the internet, and you’re allowed to feel a little lost in it sometimes.

9 times of 10 I see AI hate it is misaddressed from the actual problem, which isn't the fucking learning algorithms but the capitalistic desire to squeeze as much money with as little effort as possible from everything and anything that promises a prospect of Any financial gain and prioritises it over quality and whether it actually makes someone's life better, because the measure of "value" is entirely linked to financial gain. It doesn't matter if it makes our world a better place, it doesn't matter whether it makes our world a significantly worse place, what matters is whether it sells. And THIS is the problem.
AI voice assistants, chats and other machine learning tools are not the enemy to hate on. The system surrounding their use that prioritises the interests of CEOs over the interests of general public as well as Requires people to do stupid useless things for money to survive is the actual problem. Ironically, the people who could benefit from AI tools the most, those whose life could literally be turned around for the better (people with various disabilities) are the LAST people who are considered in this ai race. Because the system dictates that it'll rather focus on cheap production of shitty pictures to cut costs and eliminate the need for the rich to pay those of us who may actually enjoy their job rather than make accessibility tools actually accessible, despite being able to do so if only it was the priority.
We have chatbots who speak in natural voices, we have face and object recognition features integrated into our phones. But we don't have screen-readers that don't suck, we don't have accessible tools for translating in real time what the camera sees into accurate descriptions to help visually impaired people. We have algorithms to generate pictures, social medias integrate various bots to put them on their platforms for god knows why, but what they don't have is algorithms that could automatically generate text descriptions of pictures and videos posted on them. What they don't have is AI tools for detecting flashing in videos and gifs and a way to filter them. They have algorithms searching for porn and copyrighted materials tho even if it's just a few seconds of music created by a world famous artist who has been dead for decades.
Granted, we have really good automated subtitles and translators, but at the same time there are no automated descriptions of other sounds while the tools for GENERATING various sounds exist. And subtitles themselves do nothing to convey intonation even though just adding some cursive words when a speaker makes an emphasis on them would already greatly improve the experience.
Whenever I think of the current state of AI, I remember that project that through implants gave blind people the ability to see. The one that got shut down and left all the people who used it blind again. Because it wasn't profitable.
