An unexpected highlight of my three hours away from the conference hotel yesterday was my exploration of Chicago's historic Fine Arts Building, where Harriet Moore founded Poetry Magazine and where L. Frank Baum kept an office and wrote part of The Wizard of Oz. I was drawn to the bookstore, whose name I discovered to be an homage to the turn-of-the-century literary magazine, also published in that building, which printed much regionalist writing. I thumbed through issues of The Dial (not for sale) from 1900, 1902, and 1905 and was excited to find reviews of some of the later works of William Dean Howells (and his friend Henry James). Day 14 of @missdahlelama's #authorlifemonth photo challenge as for our Prized Bookish Possession. Being a theatre kid, of course I was introduced to #Shakespeare very early. #MidsummerNightsDream has always been my fave. I used monologues from the play for my auditions for the longest time, and I'd LOVE to play Puck one day. Or Hermia. In 1998 I moved to France for a semester of High School, and on a trip to Paris, I made a point of going to the bookshop owned and operated, in-show, by my favorite #HighlanderTheSeries character: #Methos. (The first time I saw it, standing in front to Notre Dame 38 hours after landing in Paris, I was struck like a jolt when I saw the store on the Quay. I didn't know it was REAL, I thought it was a set, like the Barge or the Dojo. I did research later and learned it was an actual store and HAD to go the next time we went back to Paris for a day trip to a Museum, where I also fell in love with #VanGogh for the first time.)
