playersexual as a games criticism concept doesn't mean those characters aren't also bisexual or pansexual. playersexuality is just when all characters are romanceable regardless of your character's gender, appearance, etc. it's "just" a functional way of describing a game mechanic, which can land badly or well depending on the game in question. a better name for it might be gender neutral romances, but i guess it's not really as snappy.

the reason it has such a bad reputation is because it's usually connected with games that do it badly. bad playersexual games can make the player feel devalued, as if the core traits of their character don't matter. implemented poorly and unevenly, it can make the romanceable characters appear as though they haven't been written with a lot of depth, and can even be biphobic in itself.

it's important to talk about what games do playersexuality well, and what games do playersexuality badly, without the assumption that people are being biphobic when they talk about it. an example of a game that does it badly at times is dragon age 2, and i'll just pick on one thread: you cannot learn that anders is bisexual if you romance him as f!hawke. he simply won't tell you about his history with karl.

in-world, you can justify this, but criticism isn't about the logic we can headcanon. it might make sense that anders won't tell a woman because he's concerned she won't take it well or it's not relevant, or it might make sense that anders only tells a man in order to feel out if he's receptive. but neither of those are explicit textual events, so it ends up feeling to the end players that anders is schrödinger's bisexual - that he feels straight or gay depending on the player's gender. that feels extremely bad to play, especially if you're a queer player going for a queer hawke. it's really poor representation of a bisexual person, too. our bisexuality isn't conditional like that.

baldur's gate 3 also has playersexual romances. don't hit me!! that's the mechanism that's going on in the game: the characters do not care about the gender or appearance of the character, and will romance you regardless. the key and crucial thing is that baldur's gate 3 makes sure that each character is at the least a fully-rounded person and well-developed queer character in their own right.

that doesn't mean the game isn't using a playersexual system, but it does mean the game is fully developed, polished, and cares about the writing, the characters and the players enough to do it the right way. i think that baldur's gate 3 does playersexuality the only correct way that you can do it. baldur's gate 3 knows that you can't divorce a romance's sexuality from their character and call it day. baldur's gate 3 knows that you can't implement a different response depending on the gender of the player character.

does it mean it's perfect and nobody should be critical of the game? no, i think it's amazing but i'm sure someone has some in-depth thoughts i haven't even considered. i know that a significant criticsm of playersexual romance systems is that having different characters with different identities is a good thing, but personally i like not having to pick my video game gender based on who i want to romance.

does it mean nobody who talks about playersexuality isn't being biphobic? also no, some people are freaks who think playersexuality is bad solely because it means they're in proximity to queer people in a video game, and those people should be avoided.

tl;dr it is important to approach criticism of this stuff in good faith if you can! but it is also important to know your dogwhistles when people are being assholes. nuance in everything i guess

(honestly, my biggest criticism about bg3's approach to this is that it does some hilarious shit like astarion being outright bigoted about gnomes when you're romancing him ... as a gnome. like. dude!)

If Sparklecare comes back or resumes I feel only a very specific audience will be left for it and KC will probably have to divert from original plans significantly. Either way, I won't be around for it, and I don't suggest anyone with a good head on their shoulders does either. You cannot separate art from the artist when so much of their core values is seeped into their work. KC clearly feels they have done nothing wrong and continues to self victimize herself.

If the audience does get an apology, well there's proof enough through her subsequent actions since the doc's drop it will be disingenuous.

for those who dont know what Sea of Thieves is, its an online cross-platform game where you are a lone pirate (or with friends as a "crew") and you can basically go do anything a pirate would want; plunder, pillage, dig up treasure, hunt and kill other pirates/players, etc. the game has a lot of pvp aspects, but you can form alliances.

and boy did we form one tonight.

most approaching ships are met with aggression, but most will call off the attack if they see you are friendly. the few who dont call off the attack are usually Reapers, who are always out for blood.

well, tonight me and my crew banded together and found not one, not two, but THREE other ships of players who all agreed to take on the maaaaassive Reaper ship harbouring The Blade of Souls (tm)

we launched a huge attack on the Reapers, which lasted TWO IN GAME DAYS before their masts finally broke

we got the blade, and sold it to get an achievement that 0.4% of players have, because im not kidding when i say taking down that ship was the hardest fucking thing ive ever done or seen in this game. heres the weapon in question:

Actually, I don't think I've received transphobic hate on this blog in a few months. People usually have another agenda to try to bring me down...

But these hates? I laugh and think they are just uneducated boobs. They dont know me (or you). But at the end of the day, I report, block, and log off. I see you all as my (grown) kids. I'm not going to stop helping people because some faceless turd decided to take their anger and confusion out on me.

When I got trans hate, it was in the realm of you know you're actually not a real man. You're a pedophile. Stop telling people to mutilate themselves. That bull scat. Being a therapist/ social worker, I took a LOT of psychology courses. And that's what they are doing. They need to hurt you to feel better about themselves. At the end of the day, they don't pay your bills. They don't deserve rent inside your head. They are just a whisper in a hurricane to me.

Something a Proffesor said during class "projection is nothing about you, all about that person and their own insecurities." So I laugh because what that person says is untrue then feel bad for these people. They are so unhappy that they need to put others down to feel better. I’m gonna vent a little here (months of inner thoughts ahead, be warned.)

I don’t really care about likes, about attention. I write what I like, I say my opinions when I want, and that’s it. I don’t crave attention from some stranger who lives across the world, couldn’t care less, really.

I also don't get the aggressive/toxic accusations... like, I can understand in some recent posts where I see a lot of really serious issues (crimes) or when someone treats me in the same way, but besides that? I'm just very upfront, I don't mean to be rude, it's just really my way. So... I don't know. I've never really felt the need to advocate for myself, but I don't really like it when people accuse me of things. It’s so odd, because when a post of mine goes "viral" in a negative way, I'll give it attention for like… as long as I’m online. Soon as I log off? It’s over. But some people keep talking about the subject for the next three days. Like, are you sure I need to get a life? I barely post things here, I hardly have time to write my stuff. It's not even my job, just a hobby. If I’m active on Tumblr more than once a day for a week straight, that's already too much. You can stalk me here and see, I'm not very active. BECAUSE GUESS WHAT? And that's why I know none of you really have one, or if you guys do, it's pretty miserable, because you guys turn a simple situation into a whole war and keep digging for days. It's fucking crazy. I have pretty strong opinions, I'm an expressive person, and that irritates people. Don't tell me it doesn't, because I receive a lot of shade or hate asks because of this. 99% of them I ignore. Because for me? It doesn't really matter that much, it’s not worth my effort, my peace, you know? On the other side, people who don't like me here ADORE spending time talking about it, that's insane, guys. Go outside. like damn dude did you think for even a second that people DON'T create works that deal with heavy topics that are deemed "problematic" by your bullshit standards?? the most acclaimed works of fiction, especially in literature, are the gritty and uncomfortable ones with critiques and observations that can only come through examination of topics deemed problematic.

sure you could argue that fanworks often feature them not for critical reasons but rather enjoyment and kink and so fucking what?? people use their favourite characters as a canvas upon which to paint scars or just explore themes from a standpoint of curiosity sometimes and those are a 100% correct way to use them.

things that are immoral in our life can be explored in graphic, visceral detail in fiction. it's not a black and white issue of "if you consume/create X content you condone X content". people have the capacity for critical thinking and drawing a line between fiction and reality.

if you tell me what i can and can't ship or what i can or can't pin on my favourite little guys on the grounds of "but that is [problematic theme] which is BAD and EVIL so that means ur BAD!!" i am going to actively tell you to stay mad. i am an adult with a functioning brain, go buy yourself some critical thinking and log off. i am having a good time.
