This is honestly my favourite scene in this entire case.

The visual is simply incredible with Lablanc falling down from the top of the stairs and that triggering this chain reaction in Miles' mind with several pieces of logic from previous information coming in at once and all together connecting to this new mind-blowing revelation. I can't describe the high I felt when that happened the very first time I played this game. It's so good!

There are actually other similar scenes in all of the cases in Investigations where you have this kind of "Logic chain" (though the one from the first case only has one new piece so not really a chain) but this one is my favourite of them because it's the most dramatic. I love that I1 does this, it's so much fun to do! Another reason why I love the Logic mechanic so much.

The first stumbling block comes sooner than expected. 

It’s also incredibly embarrassing.

It is something that Skywalker has always appreciated about Cody Fett, though he’d never in a million years fess up to admiring anything about the second-in-command. There is a plan, established between the two of them. Loose as it may be, it’s still a plan. And plans have steps, have actionable items that must be carried out.

thinking about how se0 had dusknoir live a horrifying period of time where he sinks so deep into thr darkness he almost loses himself, so the player can feel and understand his determination to keep his life no matter how hopeless his future is. his life is finally HIS, and he's not giving it away again. and it's only the first step in his journey because by the end of se5 he learns his life doesnt have to keep on going on a literal sense, that letting your actions impact others' future is another way of making your life matter thanks to YOUR own choices.

Having Trimmer say he can't leave or he'll be "run aground" in a book called "run aground".........idk if it's on purpose but you've got me PRESSED. Is he actually right they would kick him out? :0

Someone in a discord I share with the co-authors also had this question, so I figured this was a good place to answer it! I think there's a couple things at play here.

Perfect world, everything working as it should, a person using their earned vacation time for a limited trip landside would be closely noted but not a problem! A person unexpectedly gone much longer than anticipated would be increasingly likely to have the people in charge of population inflow give them a long look over like "okay but how MUCH value do you bring to the Fleet, and how likely are you to fuck back off and do things that don't benefit it for long periods of time?".

(In a vaguely similar way to how if you just up and ditch from the hospital we eventually have to mark you discharged and if you show back up you have to go back to the ER and start again.)

Trimmer, who is VERY used to things not working the way idealistic Family Fleet kids think they "should", and having his self-fulfilling prophecies...self-fulfill, is well aware that "guy who COULD be valuable to the Fleet by his qualifications, but is so socially dysfunctional he instead is working a solo boat doing easily-replaceable grunt work" is very low-priority to make allowances for, and absolutely 0% believes the "clean slate" thing that the ex-Sympatico guys got told. He also I think is very aware that there's no way Basil and Thena's trip landside is going to be a quick and easy jaunt that's within his accrued leave hours, and is not the type of guy to optimistically lie.

Also, being a solo operative on a single posting means less pressure and no crew conflict, but also that you're the sole person running that vessel. For better or worse, that's going to draw more notice and criticism than a single crewmember being on extended leave from a 200, or even a 50.

Would exile be the inevitable outcome if he even stepped on land, like Trimmer makes it out to be? No! If he left for (???) amount of time and came back, is it impossible that someone reviewing re-entrants to the Fleet after extended travel would go "what, someone who flunked all the way out to a plastics trawler for repeated stabbing and reportedly being a huge dick? Why would we tho?" and he'd be kind of informally turfed out via not being allowed back in? Also no.
