I don't know if I'm reaching with that one, but it is established rather quickly that Lan WangJi is determined to mirror Wei WuXian's actions in his first life back at him when he has the means (for instance, the carrying on his back thing, or teasing him with "I do not know" as a call back to the "whatever" moment).

And just as it was a mystery to me why Wei WuXian, during the Yiling date, would entice A-Yuan with toys only to not buy him any, setting him up for disappointment, but I came to understand that it was actually a setup for Lan WangJi to buy it so that A-Yuan would like him (!!!), there is a kinda similar situation that crops up in the present, that was puzzling me but became clear to me on this re-read.

When they come out of Yi City, Wei WuXian is quite depressed and despondent. He has just witnessed Xiao XingChen's sad unlucky fate, and it reminded him very strongly of his own. And the juniors are all sad too, and want to burn paper money, and, sure, HanGuang-Jun is lenient and will let them express their emotions, but he's not that lenient, to let them do something improper/impolite like doing this in front of someone's house, when it is considered unlucky.

Yet, he does nothing, until Wei WuXian snaps out of his state and asks him if he's not going to do anything about it, to which Lan WangJi responds why don't you do it yourself.

And I think it was purposeful. Normally he would probably have told them - look at Lan SiZhui, that boy wasn't left to this own devices, someone taught him was what socially acceptable and didn't let him blunder through needlessly offending people until he figured it out himself.

But he saw the state Wei WuXian was in, and sought to distract him from it, by letting him notice and then handle the juniors' actions.

Clever HanGuang-Jun! He learned all of Wei WuXian's subtle tricks and is using them too!

In a way, in MDZS, Lan Sizhui is the key and answers to the big moral questions in the story: was it all worth it? Was it all worth it when Wei WuXian lost so much, even his life, when the Wens almost all died anyway, when there was so much collateral damage?

The narrative says: yes, it was worth it, because one child survived, and thrived. Look at that lovely, loveable young man! He is the reason all this was not for naught.

But what I find interesting is, Lan Sizhui is not even that exceptional, he doesn't make a big difference in the world, does he? He's still young, but despite his really good character and keen mind and aptitudes, he's not a genius, he's not renowned, he's not a Hanguang-Jun or a Yilling Laozu. He's just a kind, good-mannered, well brought up young man. Anyone would be happy to claim him as a son or a disciple or a son-in-law. But he's not some big game changer. Even though being a cultivator sets him apart from a good chunk of the normal population already, in his habitual context he's a normal kid. He makes friends, acts silly sometimes, hasn't slayed any Shuanwu of slaughter, got easily led into a trap by a trail of beheaded cats. A normal kid.

And that's important, because this reward is as the sacrifice Wei WuXian made. He didn't make some grand gesture for important people. He did what was right in his view, no more, no less. It wasn't for some greater good, even less for fame. It was simply what was right. And if you do what's right you're not really adding up and subtracting the wins and losses as in a giant thought experiment of the trolley problem. There probably would have been ultimately less death and suffering had Wei WuXian let the Wens to their misery and death quietly. There wouldn't have been a Lan Sizhui, but there would have been a Jiang YanLi, a Jin ZiXuan, and many people that got killed when they attacked him would have lived. But it wouldn't have been right, and so Wei WuXian doesn't think about it that way, and the narrative doesn't either. It tells you life is complicated, and sowing violence reaps more violence, and you can't always "win". But if you do your best, if you keep doing what's right, even if you are only human, and make mistakes, and everyone is against you, it still counts.

It counts. Not for the greater good, not for fame, it counts. Because the whole point is Lan Sizhui gets to live, and grow up, and be a normal kid and have a good life, and that's enough. He doesn't need to be or do anything "more" than that.

It is lovely in MDZS how Wei WuXian essentially has the “male” role, in that he is the one pulling on Lan WangJi’s figurative pigtails, the one to give him flowers repeatedly, the one to say he’s pretty out loud and in his head all the time, and the one trying to get him to pay attention to him.

Lan WangJi, meanwhile, gets teased, looks pretty, receives flowers, gets embarassed, defaults to ignoring his crush to appear aloof and keep control, his chaste modesty is being scandalously transgressed via super-meaningful Lan ribbon and cold pond shenanigans, and he secretly keeps all the tokens of Wei WuXian’s affections

And also kisses him forcefully against a tree (but even then in the text and Wei WuXian's view, he's a "shy maiden") and fantasizes about shutting him up in a very specific way

Socially also, Lan WangJi is the pure and treasured daughter niece/sister, thematically, while Wei WuXian is the handsome devilish rake who "corrupts him"

And I find it hilarious how they both subvert everything I've mentioned above (by virtue of being extremely well-written characters who aren't confined to one stereotype but feel like real, complex, subtle people instead), especially after Wei WuXian's resurrection when their dynamic changes to become extremely funny more balanced

Mon billet n°1 en 2022

The power dynamic between Bingqiu is so complex and unhinged.

On the one hand, Shen Qingqiu is the Shizun, and Luo Binghe the disciple. He still pretty much serves and defers to him as such. Shen Qingqiu is the master, the elder, the superior, in a way that can never change in a culture so steeped in respect for such hierarchies, and where reversal or equalization is simply not a thing. Shen Qingqiu himself still refers to himself as "this master" for most of the story (even post canon? I can't remember), and the one quality he appreciates in Luo Binghe (at least that he says aloud) is his obedience. In both their minds, he's very firmly the one who raised and trained Luo Binghe - though with very different connotations depending on who you ask.

On the other hand... well... Luo Binghe plays the obedient puppy-ish disciple, but he pretty much cute/pathetic-bullies his way into anything he wants, because Shen Qingqiu is weak to him and can't say no. So Luo Binghe plays submissive, cries a little, then gets to top Shen Qingqiu into next Sunday in the most unfillial way imaginable lol. Also, and I cannot stress this enough, he's the most powerful person in the world, he doesn't have to serve anyone in a humble cottage. He literally has an empire and is a ruler, but he plays housewife and meek disciple to this one spoiled guy who gave him the correct manual once and head-patted him with abandon.

Also let's not forget that, to Luo Binghe, Shen Jiu and Shen Yuan are pretty seamlessly the same person. This serial head-patter is also the guy who poured hot tea on him and would string him up to beat him and made him sleep in the woodshed like a particularly miserable Cinderella. To him, one day, his cruel master deemed him worthy of his love after he made him go through many trials, and then slam-dunked him into the abyss, and then self-destructed to save him and then turned out to be alive and avoiding him like the plague and then sulked because Luo Binghe did not properly ask his hand in marriage. Luo Binghe may be the most powerful man in the world and have Shen Qingqiu wrapped around his manipulative golden little finger, BUT the grip and ascendant Shen Qingqiu possesses over Luo Binghe's psyche is unparalleled.

BUT the other side of this equation is that Shen Qingqiu feels so guilty, and loves Luo Binghe so much, he can't bear to make him unhappy and folds like a wet paper towel any time there is the merest hint of tears - which is a conscious strategy on Luo Binghe's part! Shang Qinghua told him acting pathetic works, and it does, and so he milks it! Who knows how much of it is real? Not me. Not Shen Qingqiu either, who also does not care that he's being manipulated. He knows he's being manipulated! But it works anyway!

Because what are you going to do when a cute puppy makes sad eyes at you?? Not give him the bit of meat???

You're his master but he owns your heart so that's your fate, now. He's huge and could maul you but he loves you too much and prefers to act spoiled. He sits when you say sit, comes when you say come. You tell him no but he climbs into your lap anyway and you are helpless to stop him so you pet him. It's messy, full of pathos, possibly unhealthy. You're both living your best life.

That's Bingqiu.

📓 for the ask game. doctor x rose (your choice as to which doctor)

Welp in addition to the ones I mentioned in the last answer, There's just... SO MANY Eight/Rose AUs. Just like... terminal brainrot levels of EightRose in my brain.

So how about the one I did ... sort of start writing but never got far with it; A College AU where she was a child star and he's a return student both studying in the same theater program. This got long, so under the cut it goes!

They meet for the first time at open auditions for the term, and they start talking there, and realize they have a class in common when they see each other the next week.

There's two plot threads really, Rose and her attempt at Normalcy and escaping the assumptions of childhood stardom as she's also trying to reset her mind before pursuing more serious roles. And Eight (John, because I'm lame) and his really shitty political family and their expectations and how they constantly have made him put aside his own desires for his life and the consequences for his decision to break away.

One of those consequences is the fact that after awhile, when his rent goes up, he doesn't really have the funds to stay there anymore. But, luckily he and Rose are friends, and she has a spare room, even though her apartment isn't THAT big. So now, they're roommates.

Insert just... so much 'oh my god they were roommates' and romantic pining content here. There's also a lot of hanging out with their friends, even though they're some of the only non-trad students in their friend group. (Also there's guitar playing and music because I'm a sap and that's just a thing I like)

Then former colleague Jack shows up to visit Rose and being mildly drunk when he shows up in the bar, she's like 'you don't have to go to a hotel, you can stay at my place!' because she's just... like that. And five minutes later she's like 'shit, I don't actually have a spare room anymore' and is apologizing to John and proposes that they share for the day or two Jack's around. It... more or less becomes him just moving into her bedroom because they like cuddling. And each other.

Long story short, the pining reaches terminal levels but they don't want to ruin their relationship, but at that point they're on the road to actually getting together. Rose has, slowly over the course of the story to this point, let go of her discomfort with her childhood stardom and the way some of the professors and other students act around her, so that leaves John's family plot to wrap up, so for MAXIMUM DRAMA, his brother's political campaign wants family shots and video for promotional purposes.

His parents more or less demand he comes home for this, and John invites Rose to come along. His family is not happy about him doing that, but John and Rose decide that fuck it, they love each other, they're gonna be there for each other no matter what, no matter the cameras, no matter the family dynamics they're born into, they get to choose and they choose each other.

Then they go back to the apartment, and live happily ever after. lol. (Also the whole thing totally ends with them having an onstage kiss in a play with just.)

📚 for Doctor Who ✨

Oh god, there are so many. The Rose-Dimension-Hops-into-the-Time-War fic, the I'm-trash-and-watching-Classic-Who-and-inserting-Rose 'fic' (there is no plot, it's just me wanting Rose and all the companions to be friends lol), the whole CharlEightRose universe. Let me see if I can sift through everything for one that's not... a whole damn cinematic universe in my brain XD.

Oh, man, I had a concept once upon a time of a Nine/Rose epistolary fic, that started life as a supernatural AU where he was like a historical astronomer, but that over the years kinda morphed in my brain just into a more... 'the TARDIS thinks Nine needs a penpal' kind of deal in his wanderings pre-Rose.

And it's just... them writing to each other in 'magic' journals. I still don't know why the journals are magic, it's just a suspension of disbelief point for the concept. But anyway, they write messages to each other, back and forth, in this journal, just... talking about life and the places they go/want to go, Rose talks about how shambles she feels her life is because of her terrible boyfriend (then, eventually, ex-boyfriend) and he just... talks about the places and people he sees.

The whole thing comes to a head when they run out of pages - they're down to the last pages and there's a final message, and then like... the next month he lands on Earth and Whoops, there's Auton's in the shops. Time to save the world. And accidentally meet his penpal lol.

(In the original concept there was unexplained time travel at the end, so I think that's why it ended up morphing in my brain, because like... if he's gonna time travel anyway, he might as well just... be a time traveler.)

I usually fail so hard at NaNo, and even if I don’t make 50k this year, I am so damn proud of myself.

TOP FIVE VIDEO GAMES‼️‼️

I had to do a TON of thinking about this but here we go:

5. Hollow Knight

I actually almost put The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker here, but I remembered this game existed and I slapped it on instead. Genuinely the most pretty and emotional game I’ve ever played, I can’t not have it in my top five LMAO. I have so many thoughts and feelings on this game and it’s the reason I love indie games so much now-I owe it a lot!

4. Pokemon Omega Ruby and Pokemon Moon

Similar deal here, these are my favorite Pokémon games and I can’t decide between them. I LOVE the pokemon, the story, and the aesthetic of Moon, but I have a LOT of memories attached to Omega Ruby (and I also love its story LOL). I also use Moon for 90% of my shiny hunting and it’s the game that got me into it, so I have an attachment to it in that way.

3. Don’t Starve Together

I mean. Yeah. What did you expect LMAO

Jokes aside this game has done SO MUCH for me unironically aside from it being a game I have almost 400 hours in. I’ve met so many fantastic people through this game (like you Quinn!) and drawing the characters has done WONDERS for my art skills (aka my human anatomy skills have improved a TON). Not to mention this game is just plain fun as hell and even with the amount of time I have on it there’s still so much I haven’t done in it. Love this fucking game so much.

2. Animal Crossing: New Leaf

This was the first 3Ds game I ever got and it practically raised me back in the 2010s. I have gone through SO MUCH with this game it is unbelievable. Had my first file for YEARS before my cartridge stopped working inexplicably. Got another one that I started a new file on, got SO attached to it and had it when the amiibo update came out and fell in love with the new amiibo villagers. Funnily enough. I actually just reset that town yesterday and one of my starting villagers was one I’ve been looking for for actual YEARS on New Horizons.

The amount of memories I have attached to this game is more than any other game (besides Splatoon) and the charm this game has is irreplaceable. I love New Horizons a lot, I really do, but New Leaf will forever be my favorite AC and 3Ds game.

1. Splatoon (all of them)

I feel like the amount of reblogging and posting I do here could NEVER express how much this game means to me. You might think from my blog that DST is my favorite, but nope-Splatoon has been my favorite game(s) for nearly the past decade. When I say this game was love at first sight, I mean it LOL-I lost every match I played the first time I played Splatoon 1, but I LOVED it. I had never had so much fun losing before lol. This game unironically changed my life and has been there for me through my hardest moments and is genuinely, unironically the reason I’m an artist now. The connections I have for the characters and the love I’ve put into my own OCs and whatnot is unmatched compared to any other game/fandom I’ve been in. Not to mention all the memories I have with this game-from nearly crying when Splatoon 2 was announced, to ACTUALLY crying when Splatoon 3 was announced, getting heated over certain Splatfests in the Splatoon 2 days and freaking the fuck out over the Squid Sisters, it’s INSANE. And even all this doesn’t even accurately describe it.

I’ve been here since the exact day the first game came out and I’m so fucking excited to see where this series goes <3

The Hackett Family Tree that was on the wall in the house. Transcribed it out of it’s cursive to something more easily readable in case others wanted to know what the tree looked like lol. Only bit of info I wasn’t able to figure out was the line that was written under Nathaniel Hackett’s date of birth and death.

Transcript under the cut.

Jedediah Hackett (1681 - 1722) married Tempest Seimer (1692 - 1740) and they had one son, Nathaniel Hackett (1710 - 1765).

Nathaniel married Agnes Farthing (1717 - 1730) and they had three children. Two sons: Increase Hackett (1742 - 1806) and Secundus Hackett (1745 - 1750), as well as one daughter: Faith Hackett (1750 - 1830).

Increase married Hope Mather (1750 - 1810) and they had one son, Citus Hackett (1805 - 1856).

Citus married Mary Piggin (1810 - 1830) and they had one son, Azariah Hackett (1830 - 1905). He is noted as being Nathaniel’s great-grandson. All children after him are marked similarly now.

Man I love this particular key art they used in the game for so many reasons. One of which is just the fact that the lightening in this is just gorgeous obviously, and the background of the moon behind the treehouse with that gorgeous starry sky. But the rest is just you can tell exactly what plans they had for the characters at this point and how things changed with all of them.

Like Jacob, Kaitlyn, and Ryan have little differences from how they finally ended up in the game. Their designs at this point were set in stone and I love that!

Apparently Dylan once had long hair and a manbun (plus he was apparently blond at one point????) and instead of the t-shirt it’s a jacket with patches on the sleeve, and it’s so different from what we actually got that it blows me away. Emma’s wearing a white tangtop with her hair down and shorts it looks like.

But the two that interest me the most are Nick and Abi. Mostly because I feel like they’re changes were decided on much, much later down the line. Like it’s hard to tell but Nick is clearly wearing glasses here, and we know from that unused drawing of Nick in Abi’s sketchbook that he was wearing glasses in all of them.

And Abi? Her outfit of that jacket, shorts, and knee length socks? Super familiar and absolutely jumped out at me right away because this picture of Abi that you can find in Chris’s office?

Virgil hadn’t even turned around from closing the door when he started speaking.

"I'm going to close my eyes and count to ten. Maybe I'll convince myself you were never here if you won't be here when I open them."

Janus should have known to expect such a cold welcome. He stared at Virgil’s back, willing him to turn around and hear him out, to notice and acknowledge him, even just to glare at him. The sharp interjection of Virgil’s counting cut through the air before he could speak.

“One.”

It had been instinct, to go to Virgil first. His former best friend. The one he once trusted more than anyone else.

“Two.”

Maybe Janus should have gone to someone else.

“Three.”

Patton wouldn’t have turned him away.

“Four.”

Maybe Logan would have tried to help.

“Five.”

Roman... Roman probably would have pretended he wasn’t there, too.

“Six.”

Remus would have stayed until the bitter end.

“Seven.”

He was already running out of time anyway. What did a few more seconds matter?

“Eight.”

But, if Janus was being honest with himself - and sometimes, he was - he just wanted to see Virgil one last time.

“Nine.”

Janus closed his eyes.

“Ten.”

No one was there when Virgil turned back around.

You remember in the brain invaders episode? Where the clones were hunted down by anyone with a worm and forcibly infected?

Some version of that must have happened at 66.

I mean, come on. Not every clone is going to have their comm on, and listening. Somewhere across the galaxy, someone must have been asleep. Someone must have had their comm muted.

All officers were just called to the bridge. And this one clone, he needs to use the refresher. It will just be one minute, so he mutes his comm and breaks off. But when he gets back, everyone is looking at him strange. We have orders, the Commander says. Let me play them for you.

Just after a battle, most clones were sleeping. In the middle of the night their.comms chirp. Priority alert. Some listen, some take a moment to wake up. And watch as their brothers stiffen. Watch as they come closer, comms outstretched. We have our orders, they say. Listen to them. Some figure it out quickly and have a few seconds warning. They run to the door. But their enemy is now their own flesh and blood, and they are everywhere. Those who run are caught, forcibly pinned down as someone sets a comm to their ear.

Incredibly rare are those who physically cannot hear the order. Those who had commanders, medics who cared and who wouldnt give them up. Vode for whom the entire group learned signing. But they dont understand why everyone is acting so stiff. Execute Order 66, someone signs. But it has no meaning. The blaster suddenly pointed at their face does. Traitors will be executed, they read off their commanders lips. Traitor? What-

Another thing that kills me in the Tales of the Jedi trailer is how young Anakin looks before time is passed.

Hes what, 21? Hes 21 and hes barely not a teen anymore and hes given a 14 year old kid. In the middle of a war. Being told, hey she's your responsibilty now. Dont get her killed.

And so he pushes her, desperately. Giving her a little more than she can handle every time, but hopefully not enough to get her killed. He trains her relentlessly, again and again, having their own men (who shouldnt be either of theirs) shoot her over and over until she can hold her ground. Dueling with her until shes adept enough to battle a Sith Lord and win before shes old enough to legally be in the army.

Because she is his responsibility. And he loves easily and ferociously and dangerously.

according to the song "Gaston" Gaston would eat "Four-dozen eggs every morning" four dozen is 48, and 48 x 7 is 336, so that's 336 eggs every week. now there's 52 weeks in a year, so 336 x 52 is 17,472 eggs a year. as an adult he now eats five dozen, so it's fairly safe to assume he stuck around the four dozen mark for quite a while, let's go with a decade. so in the timespan of about ten years as a child/teen Gaston ate at least (because remember, this is only counting breakfast) 174,720 eggs. when he became an older teen though, he probably would have increased his egg intake and would have gotten closer to his current five dozen, and to skip a few steps if we assume he's been eating five dozen eggs for about a decade as well, then that's 218,400, which when combined with the previous decade means that comes to a total of 393,120 eggs for breakfast in Gaston's lifetime (not counting when he was even younger and couldn't handle four dozen eggs)

imagine a "humans are space orcs" story where humans and aliens can't understand the other's language, and it's told from an alien's POV. however, the twist is the alien doesn't call humans "humans" nor do they ever specify their own species. the reader has no idea the MC is an alien, or that the human's a human until close to the end when they're able to communicate some and the human's like "i can't believe i'm one of the first humans to meet an alien"

the Truman Show is such a good movie. the attention to detail throughout the entire movie is just amazing! Marlon stocking the vending machine while talking to Truman, but then quickly taking them out when Truman's not looking. Truman needing to take vitamins because he's never been in the sun. all the funky camera angles, and how Meryl frequently smiles directly at them. the way all the "background characters" just act so plain weird! when Truman starts to realize something's up, and steps out of his routine, they all continue playing their parts even though in reality people would stare at the man running and shouting! if someone driving almost ran into someone who was being careless, they would hop out of the car and go what are you doing! people would grumble and complain that the bus wasn't working, not quickly get off the bus as if they were waiting for the announcement! the lack of headrests in the vehicles so they can get better camera angles. the way everything is just too crisp, and clean to be real. i just love this movie so much

Personally I hope Wrathion and Sabellian's bickering builds to the point that they fight, resulting in the obviously bigger and stronger Sabellian making Wrathion taste the mat in their dragon forms. Wrathion is, and always has been, a petulant child when you think about it and he has made some seriously big mistakes because of it. I really want him to take a very humbling L in order to make him realize what a small fish in a big pond he is when it comes to dragons. I don't hate Wrathion but I really want to see him be very humbled, badly.

I'm probably a bad mother to my precious son for agreeing with you, anon, but yes! This would be good for his character development.

So far the only dragons Wrathion has spent a significant amount of time around are:

Fahrad, who had to hide his species until the very last moment of his life.

Kairoz, who also spent most of his time in humanoid form, and was a Very Bad Inflience on a young, impressionable dragon

Ebonhorn, who was raised by Highmountain tauren and never had any other dragons around, either

So yeah, Wrathion actually still doesn't know how to fit in with his own kind. I'm looking forward to seeing him learn, but I have a feeling it won't be all sunshine and roses.

Slow burn is fine. Perfectly fine, but I tell you…. If you write slow burn please, for the love of…once you get to the end do not have it end on a “chaste” kiss. I mean, by name alone, Slow burn sort of indicates it should eventually turn into Fire that Explodes with passion and tongues and hands in interesting places.  Don’t wanna do the smut full on? Then don’t, but please give me more than two lips barely brushing against the other. !!!!!! 

So, okay, I guess my new trope favorite is Slow Burn to Burning Down the House. Slow Burn deserves the resolution. That’s all I’m saying.

Happy

@practicecourts and @dontwant-dontcare (many thanks!) both asked me for five things that make me happy and I wasn’t going to answer because honestly? I couldn’t even think of two this morning but after getting lost inside a lovely fluffy bouncy story, my outlook has improved (! Behold! The power of Fic!)  So, without further adieu:

1) coffee, coffee makes me happy - it’s the ritual of it - the flavor I pick, the type of cream I want, the little nudge with my automatic milk frother and then that first taste….*smacks lips* ah, yes. Happiness in a cup. I have often said I am a tea drinker that drinks coffee out of necessity, but I can admit, after all these years, that I do enjoy my first cup. Tea owns me the rest of the day, but that first hour belongs to the bean.

2) my cat - in so many ways, but specifically the way he stretches and meows at me as I pet him - he gives me this look like, oh, please, oh please? And I get sucked into giving him an all over body rub that he just…luxuriates into and it never fails to make me smile. It’s such a tactile thing - petting animals is one of the simplest, yet happiest things…

3) Music- music makes me happy - from punk rock to soft cello to 80s new wave to jazz to back again - it’s all connected and we form memories with sound and some songs can just suck you back to where you were when you heard them - like when I think of R.E.M, I think of being in college and hearing someone blaring it over their speakers across the quad during one perfect-the leaves-are-changing autumn day, or when I hear Nina Simone crooning I Want A Little Sugar in My Bowl and I immediately remember all the nights I spent listening to it on repeat, singing it in my bedroom pretending I was wrapped up in satin and silk and smoky bars…yeah, music makes me happy.

4) Laughter - always, but specifically, laughter I’ve caused. I love making people laugh. Like, throw their head back, forget who and where they are-laughing. It’s a joy, a gift, and a pure pleasure that makes my toes curl. Sometimes, I even think it’s better than sex. LOL but don’t tell my bf that. Smirk.

5) Reading - All kinds, of course - but lately,  I just love reading about the same two idiots falling in love. How will X and Y get together this time? - I wonder as I start a brand new fic. There is a certain kind of spark that ignites when I settle into a good story about my two favorite characters that is fucking unparalleled. And people who don’t get fan fic will never understand that and it makes me sad for them, in a way. But god! Finding a good fic that hits all your buttons and puts a big dopey grin on your face?! True joy. And what a gift it is, truly.

Hearts & Flour

“Is all of this…for me?”

Ginny asks, gazing around their kitchen. No, correction, Harry’s kitchen. He’s always sort of staked his claim to it, right from the start. Ginny has been okay to let him have it, truth be told. 

But right now his kitchen is an absolute mess. There are pans everywhere; racks with varying types of pastries cooling on them and flour is everywhere. It’s even on Harry. And he looks adorable, she has to admit, but oh no, she’s not going to tell him that. Because as well as being covered in white powder and (what Ginny hopes is) chocolate along his face, Harry also looks pretty hacked off. He glares at her almost accusingly.

“What are you doing home! You weren’t supposed to be back until late!”

“The meeting turned out shorter than I thought,” Ginny said, coming into the kitchen proper. She pretends to look disinterestedly into a large orange bowl of something that smells remarkably like treacle. With a wave of his wand, Harry floats the bowl over to the counter and frowns at her, his hands on his hips.

“What exactly are you doing, Harry?” Ginny asked.

He looks shy for a moment, but she finally sees his shoulders relax. “It was for our Valentine’s celebration.” 

“But Valentine’s Day was last week.”

“I know, Gin. But we missed it because I was gone on that mission. I thought…I thought I could make it up to you. With….” Harry shrugs and moves his arm in a circle to indicate the mess around him.

Ginny bites her lip and looks away to hide her smile. She raises what she hopes is a cool eyebrow and glances back at him. “You thought I would appreciate a messy kitchen as a romantic gift?”

Harry purses his lips and only grunts at her. He waves his wand a few times and the kitchen looks marginally better but there is still a sense of chaos in the air. Not to mention the scent of something burning. Ginny nods at their stove and Harry follows her gaze and then swears a rather bad word indeed as he rushes to pull out whatever it is he’s forgotten about. 

As his shoulders slump, Ginny comes up beside him and stares at what looks like a charred pan of strawberry tarts. 

“Bugger. Those looked kind of good. Well, minus the dark, burned bottoms.”

Harry only gives her a disgruntled look and sets the pan on the counter, checking each tart to see if there are any to be saved. There’s not. He sighs and pulls his oven gloves off in a huff of frustration. 

Ginny smirks and touches his arm. “Harry, love, it’s okay. I don’t need you killing yourself baking. You more than made it up to me by keeping me in bed all weekend. Or have you forgotten already?”

Harry blushes, but then shrugs sort of helplessly as he looks around the kitchen.   

“I just wanted to do something nice. A surprise. A romantic surprise.”

Ginny leans in and before she captures his mouth for a kiss, she brushes a bit of flour off of his cheek. His eyes spark at hers when she pulls back and she smirks at him. 

“What happened, anyway? It’s unlike you to be so…chaotic while baking.”

“Ron floo’d and I got distracted with, erm, something. I’m sorry. I wanted it to be perfect.”

“You should know by now that I never expect perfection from you.”

Harry fixes her with an unamused look. “Ha-hah.”

Ginny laughs and runs her hands through his hair, making it stand up even more. “Not the way I meant that and you know it. Is there anything worth salvaging? Or should we just order out for afters tonight?”

“The chocolate croissants should be all right,” Harry said, frowning. “And I hadn’t had a chance to ruin the treacle yet.”

“Then that’s all we need,” Ginny said, smiling. 

Harry just stares at her and then runs a hand down his face. When he finally meets her gaze again, there’s a sheepish look on his face that Ginny doesn’t understand. Fumbling for a moment, Harry steps back and with an almost timid grin, he pulls a red velvet box from his jeans pocket and simply holds it out to her. 

Ginny feels her heart start to beat a staccato in her chest but she makes herself take a deep breath before tentatively reaching out and touching the jewelry box. 

“Harry?”

“Go on then,” he said, shaking his head. “I was going to give it to you surrounded by all your favorite sweets so I, er, could wear you down, I reckon, I don’t….” Harry gets a sudden determined air and pushes the box firmly into Ginny’s hand. He uses his fingers to close hers around it and there’s a certain look in his eye….

about the blog: This is my Obey Me! sideblog where I post all my fanfiction and general thoughts! My favorite character is obviously Barbatos, though Solomon is a close second. Next in line is Mammon and Thirteen. Everybody else is about equal in my eyes and I love them all! I enjoy writing for all the characters, every single one of them are fun for me to write about.

I also enjoy writing lesson recap posts and sometimes character analysis and theory posts. This can result in essays because I often have a lot to say about stuff lol.

asks: I love getting asks, so please feel free to send me one if you want to! You can ask me about anything Obey Me related, whether it's questions about how to play the game or if you've had a thought about a character and you want to share it, pretty much anything you want! Ahhhhh... my friend your ask has set me with a nigh impossible task, for Goncharov as a phenomenon is a many-legged kraken whose suckers will snag any unsuspecting tumblr-fish swimming by while its center remains hidden by the jagged edges of the digital reef.

See, it started with a shoe.

Nay, it started with someone being slapped with the dodgeball of Apollo's gift of prophecy and predicting that tumblr would hence come together to invent a piece of media and create a Fandom out of it so vast and authentic, people outside the hivemind would believe it was real and start to be driven mad with trying to find the source that only exists in the shape that is left empty by all the fannish things created around it.

And the tumbrlinas would be so delighted by their own work that they perpertuated it to the point of alerting its supposed creator who then went IN ON THE BIT.

And so the new fannish corner of the internet trundles on, continuing to make art and writing and music and meta discussions and we looked upon it and shared it as good.

Favourite colour: Blue.

No explanation, not particular reason why, it’s just always been blue. All shades from deep purple to almost white. But I have a special place in my heart for the word ‘turquoise’, which I feel is just so the most.

I’m listening to “Blood & Paper” by Kevin Hearne (whom I recently got to meet at a book signing event when he was visiting here and a friend asked me to spontaneously tag along - best decision in ages) Love the audiobook version read by Luke Daniels, he’s a whizz with the accents.

“Hide the drums (there’s fire in the sky)” latest installment of the Magical Marriage Ribbons-Verse, the Untamed Mega Saga, for which the author starandrea has been posting a chapter every day since May 31st 2020, so 805 consecutive days as of now without missing ONE. It boggles the mind. (I’ve started reading when the verse was ... oh I think about three parts in, I haven’t missed one too since then)

Last song: “The Greatest Show on Earth” - Nightwish, it’s my soundtrack for my daily yoga practice (no I am in fact not joking), so it doesn’t really count last leisure listening was the soundtrack of ‘Robin Hood - Das Musical’

Last series: Ooofff... ok, so many balls in the air at the same time. I’m watching “The Sandman” of course, as you do and loving it. Also “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” which is THE MOST(tm). Recently finished my rewatch and catch-up of “Manifest” and rewatched a couple of episodes of The Devil Judge with a friend who just started and that I got into it, remembering why I can’t be normal about those boys (and how delightful it is to rewatch with someone experiencing sth for the first time). Of course went down the magnificent and batshit crazy rabbithole that is Kinnporsche. Also, “Tomorrow” which is definitely my fav K-Drama of 2022.

Last movie: Day Shift - Fun and a nice remix of vampire tropes that you don’t really see on top of each other a lot. But it felt more like a set up to a movie trilogy I don’t know if it’s made enough impact into getting, so the premise might have been served better as a mini series? ...The Gray Man, which was solid and enjoyable and absolutely bonkers with how hilarious it was to watch Chris Evans have a ton of fun playing straight up, no holds barred, unredeemable villian. Ryan Gosling can stay... Ana de Armas is queen bee.

Currently working on: My last day of vacation :sob: and of course my WIP/plot bunnie enclosure excel spreadsheet (yes, I do not do things by half until I halfass writing them). Anyway, actual words or plotty thinky thoughts were put into:

- The Devil Judge a/b/o PWP (that has, so far, about 5k of set up and no porn) with a Jung Sunah made them do it scenario and non-traditional dynamics (yeah, idek...)

- Vincenzo Inception fusion - Jang Han Seo wakes up from getting shot to a curious set up of sleeping people around him (really really wanna write this one but the premise is so vast I’m afraid of flaming out again)

- three separate 9-1-1 Buddie fics of varying size and scope that reaches from one’s in love the other isn’t and confessions make things complicated (or do they), the fall out from the truck bombing goes the other way for Buck & the “Eddie deals with his 5B-issues by discovering shibari”!AU (do NOT try this at home-therapy)

- The Untamed - Blades of Glory!AU

some tips for writing blogs, especially those who are just starting out. these are some things that works for me and may or may not work for others.

how to add a read more link on mobile

type :readmore: on a free space, then hit the enter or return button

personally i think they’re very helpful because it lessens the space you take up in your dash, and might encourage more people to rb

+ you can also add this on a spot where it gives a sort of cliffhanger, essentially making people want to ‘read more’

headers, banners, and dividers

though not necessary, it’s good to have a title for your work. make sure it’s bold and doesn’t blend in with your notes (aka pairing, warnings, etc.). this also helps when someone wants to look up one of your works in your search bar

i don’t really make banners or covers for my works. but some good apps that i know of would be picsart and canva. if you’re looking for ideas, i definitely recommend going into canva

wondering how to make those really small, thin dividers? you can make them using picsart! to make a divider hit tools > free crop > brush > size (adjust it to your preference > then draw a line along the edge of your photo > save

using the divider you just saved, go back to picsart and edit it again > draw option > hit rainbow square at the bottom left corner > hit suction/droplet symbol right below the check mark > color in the white spots bc for some reason picsart glitches and makes dividers look white-ish

new blog? just opened an account?

this is gonna sound really frustrating. but... tumblr needs to check if you’re a bot or not. what does this mean? it’s likely that your first few posts won’t show up on the search bar. you may not even get to edit your header/pfp yet ://

this happened to me and there was no visibility on my account at ALL. what helped me get ‘verified’ is that i followed a LOT of accounts, liked a bunch of posts, made some posts here and there. now that lets tumblr know you’re not a bot

the tumblr tagging system usually only allows the first 5 tags in your post to show up. so, what can do you about this? only use FIVE or less tags in your post. wait about 15 minutes or more until you can add some more tags in your post, and they usually all show up like that

another important thing about using tags is not to generalize! especially if you’re using a popular tag. but also don’t specify it too much where barely anyone looks it up. for example, if you’re writing a gn piece about oikawa, i recommend you use the tags such as: oikawa x reader, haikyuu x reader, oikawa x gn!reader, haikyuu headcanons, etc

a good rule of thumb is to use character x reader tags first, then leave the full name or fandom tag last

FOR NSFW: tumblr doesn’t let any tags with nsfw show up. so, give your nsfw works another tag. maybe #namegetspicy idk, you figure it out

FOR WARNINGS: especially if you’re a dark content creator, i highly encourage you to add tw:xyz tags. if you already have a warning note at the top then that’s great. but even better for readers who prefer to actually block these tags that way they never get to see it

another important thing to note is that people have different timezones. it helps if you rb your work at a different time of the day, in case people missed it! (icymi) i’ve noticed that reblogging helps to make your post show up in the tags

interaction + feedback

first and foremost, you are not obligated to write for your followers, and neither are your followers obligated to interact with you. remember that everyone has their own individual lives, and they have their own things to do— so do you, too.

make friends! become mutuals with other writers, visit their ask box. i know it can be daunting having to initiate these things, but you might just turn out to have fun! you can’t expect people to interact with you if you’re not interacting (back). it’s... kind of a two way thing yk? no need to be afraid to interact with other writers. oh, and rb other writers works!

pspsps join tag games or do ask games. it’s fun and very interactive

it never hurts to ask for feedback. i usually do this in a more subtle way because i don’t really expect a full on analysis on my works. maybe a little, is this okay? or feedback appreciated. sometimes it takes a little bit of coaxing for the silent readers

formatting your posts and blog

i generally put in the title at the top in big, bold letters

then comes the header/divider. helps to make the post more... visually appealing ig?

it’s important to add warnings (if any) and the pairing. the audience is not all female, and it might be a little frustrating for male readers having to find out its an x fem reader piece like halfway through your fic

if you have multiple works posted, it’s really really helpful to have a navigation page!

you can organize the posts you make with tags! for example, if you’re shitposting, you can use a specific tag for that. if you have a nsfw related post (ESPECIALLY when your blog is open to the general audience) please make a tag for it

themes + colors

if you have a color in mind but don’t know which direction to go from there, i recommend looking up color + aesthetic

looking to use the same color? download a name color app that’ll give you a hex code for any color you want to use. then, you can type in that hex code for when you’re choosing a color for your tumblr bio

wondering how to make your header image small like mine? just choose a photo for your header and turn off the stretch image option

want to use a different text color that tumblr doesn’t offer? it’s not as complicated as you think. you’ll have to go on a desktop to do this and do some html (but trust me, it’s not very difficult). look up “HTML noob but trying my best - how to use colored text on desktop”

^^ i don’t have the link for the color text tutorial so you can try looking it up

how to make an aesthetic navi and masterlist

step 1: decide a theme! if you’re stuck, think about a character + color/season/mood or look up “[insert] aesthetic” to find some inspiration. or you can try looking at other blogs too

step 2: find a color scheme! it’s easier if you choose fewer colors. if you want to use the same color for both divider and text, download a color name app in order to get the hex code of that color.

step 3: add categories to your navi! most navigation pages include a link to masterlist, about/byi, and rules. your navi should have a title that indicates that it’s... a navigation page. you can add thin colored dividers with the same color to make it easier for followers to navigate

step 4: you can choose to create a ‘cover’ or a picture for your navigation and masterlist! again, i recommend you use the canva app as a starting point

extra: search up emoticon symbols to spice up your titles!

reminder for you as a writer

you’re not obligated to do any of these things. i’ve noticed that we tend to build pressure on ourselves when it comes to content and interaction. remember, this !! is !! for !! fun !! when you realize that it’s no longer fun, then know that it’s time to take a break. and there’s nothing wrong with a bit of self care.

“And you’re positive this is safe?” Kirishima asked as he used the last bit of tape Sero extended to them to stick said black-haired boy to the wall. Both of Sero’s arms were stretched out beyond his sides, taped up to the wall spread-eagle style, Denki taking final precautionary measures by flattening the tape against his legs.

“Totally, man, I’ve done this to people tons of times!” Sero answered reassuringly, tugging at his arms to make sure he couldn’t escape. “I just need to make sure that if my tape is ever used against me, I can figure a way out of it myself. Wouldn’t be super heroic for a villain to trap me using my own quirk.”

“Makes sense,” Denki nodded, stepping back to admire his and Kiri’s handiwork. “So, uh...how do you plan on getting out exactly?” 

Sero grinned widely. “Like...this!” Sero tugged harshly against his tape, pulling at his legs and arms for freedom.

He didn’t even budge.

“Uh...I mean...like...THIS!” he tried again, rougher this time, his neck twisting as all his muscles pulled and writhed trying to free himself from his own bindings. The strained noises escaping his throat made Kiri raise a brow questioningly, before Denki burst into his own fit of laughter, clutching his stomach.

“Holy shit! He’s stuck!” Denki cackled, pointing towards the raven haired teen who finally slumped against the wall with an exasperated sigh.

“Quit laughing, you idiot! I can get out of this! I’ve just gotta…” Sero tried twisting his arms this time, attempting to create some friction between his skin and the sticky texture of his tape. This only resulted in a gross burning sensation on his arms, so he tried flapping his arms up and down this time. This only made him look more like an idiot than he already did.

Kiri couldn’t help but chuckle at the boy’s predicament. “Doesn’t seem like you’re gettin’ any further there, buddy,” Kiri grinned, making Denki snort beside him. “Let’s just get you down from there before you hurt yourself.”

Sero sighed, looking away from his friends embarrassingly. “Yeah, fine, whatever.”

Denki swiped a final laugh-induced tear from his own eye before walking towards Sero pinned to the wall, trying to unstick the tape from his arms. Sero hissed at this, his face wincing in discomfort, making Denki pull away fast.

“Shit, ow, wait don’t do that,” Sero said, clenching his fist a little at the pain. “Feels like your waxing my fucking arm hairs off.”

“Let’s try pulling him from the middle,” Kiri suggested, squeezing Sero’s sides in an attempt to pull. Sero’s torso jerked, the boy letting out a small yelp. Kiri pulled away instantly, thinking he had hurt the boy like Denki had.

“Oh, sorry man I didn’t mean to hurt-”

“No, no, you didn’t hurt me. Just, uh...felt kinda funny,” Sero said without looking directly at Kiri. Denki only raised a brow at this.

“Funny. Like...ticklish funny?” the blonde offered with a smirk, poking a quick finger into the boys ribs. Sero let out a high-pitched “Ah!” his torso trying to twist away from the prodding appendage.

“Ohoho, I see. Someone’s a little sensitive~” Kiri teased, wiggling his fingers in the air menacingly in front of Sero’s body. Sero’s eyes went wide, his struggles against his own bonds becoming a little more panicked.

“Guys, wait, please, don’t do this, I can’t take it-”

“Sure you can, Spidey! Maybe you’ll even squirm enough to worm your way outta this mess, huh?” Denki giggled, wiggling his index finger into Sero’s exposed underarm. Sero jerked with a yelp again, but when the sensation didn’t let up this time, small tittters started escaping his lips.

“Denki! Nohoho!” Sero pleaded, his eyes looking like a begging puppy’s.

“Denki yes!~” Denki retorted, adding all five of his fingers to wiggle into the sensitive pit. Sero giggled harder at this, his eyes squeezing shut in mirth. Kirishima decided he wanted in on some of the fun himself, lifting up Sero’s shirt just enough to scratch his nails against Sero’s wiggling lower belly. The boy sucked his stomach in as much as he could, but his overflow of now even higher-pitched giggles practically made his stomach tickle itself on Kirishima’s fingers.

“GAHAHAHA! NAHAHA! KIRISHIMAHAHA!” Sero cackled, throwing his head back against the wall, arms tugging uselessly against his bonds. Kirishima chuckled at the boy’s torment.

“Aww, whatsa’ matter Sero? We’ve barely even done anything!” Kiri teased, moving his fingers over towards the boy's sides, the boy’s torso shaking as his giggles frantically pushed out of his chest.

“I know, right? Poor guy’s so ticklish we barely have to touch him to get him to lose it,” Kaminari smiled, his right hand continuing it’s gentle but torturous assault on his armpit, while the other travelled to poke around his upper ribs. That sent a jolt through Sero’s body, his giggles turning to small yips and screeches. His nose was scrunched and his smile was so wide it practically ripped his face in half, eyes shut tight and he giggled helplessly.

“AHAH NAHAHA! NOT THAHAT!” Sero cackled as Denki turned to poking his ribs on both sides, playing them like a toddler would play a piano, sporadic pokes leaving the boy to jerk and writhe under his playful touch. “KAMIHIHI! IT TIHIHICKLES!”

“Aw, it does? What about this, does this tickle?~” Kirishima teased as he switched his gentle scratches to playful squeezes on the boy’s hips. Sero guffawed, doubling his body over as much as it could go in the bound position he was in. 

“OH GOHOHOD! PLEHEHEASE! I CAHAHAN’T!” Sero pleaded and cackled, his knees bouncing up and down in a mock attempt to kick his legs out. Kirishima noticed this, and experimentally squeezed at one of his thighs.

Sero screamed.

“AHAHAH! NOHOHO! NOT MY THIIHIGHS! PLEHEHEASE! I’LL DO ANYTHIHIHING!” Sero begged through fits of hysterical laughter, his eyes opening to stare at the redhead in plead.

“Aw, but Sero, I can’t just miss an opportunity like this!” Kirishima giggled, moving both his hands to squeeze up and down the boy’s lean but tender thighs. Sero’s laughter reached a new level of hysterical. It was loud and boisterous, his knuckles turning white from how hard he clenched them out beyond his sides. Denki pinched at his ribs with no mercy, and Sero could barely hold on.

“PLEHEHEASE! GUHUYS! I CAHAHAN’T! IT’S SO BAHAHAD! TICKLES SO BAHAHAD!” Sero laughed, pulling even harder at his bindings. His tormentors were too caught up giggling along with their ticklish victim to hear the sound of tape unsticking to the wall in front of them. Sero tugged and pulled as he wiggled subconsciously, his sensitive body just trying to get itself away from the playful torment being put upon itself. Then-

-RIIIIP!-

Sero fell on top of the boys unceremoniously with a yelp and a loud thud, all three of them falling to the floor in a heap of giggles.

“That was so mehehean!” Sero clutched his stomach as he rolled on the floor, still giggling from the previous assault and from the hilarious fall they had all just taken.

“Sorry man, it was too easy not to,” Denki chuckled, laughing as he stood himself up from the floor. He offered two hands to the giggling boys on the floor, pulling them up with a huff.

Once up and off the floor, the boys noticed that Sero still had tape on his arms. He whined as he realized what he was gonna have to do. 20 minutes and a lot of whines and cries of pain later, Sero finally got all the tape off his arms, even if he did have to sacrifice some arm hair in the process. 

“At least now you know how to get yourself out of your own tape! Just a couple tickles and you’re all good to go!” Kaminari smiled brightly at Sero who was rubbing at his now red and blotchy arms, the raven-haired boy not amused at his comment.

“I’ll get you both back for this, just you wait,” Sero said with a roll of his eyes. Yeah, he was definitely gonna get them for this. Too easy not to.

Art Advice #7 - How to draw a face (the basics)

Hi all! 

This week, as part of my Art Advice Tag, I’ll be giving some advice on how to draw faces!

A note is that this is not going to be a tutorial, but instead a guide on how to learn how to draw a face! I personally find that tutorials aren’t super useful, not to mention that there are thousands of tutorials on drawing already out there. So whether you want to be able to design your own characters, ... or just want to give your stick figures faces, I’m hoping this blog post can help you get on your way to drawing faces!

How to draw a face (the basics) ~

Part 1 - Dreaded Proportions 

I think most artists will tell you that proportions are the banes of their existence.

And although I don’t think you necessarily need to stick to them religiously (and it’s important to note that real faces rarely stick to proportions religiously either), I think it is important to have an understanding of them if you want to start drawing faces! 

(this is a very basic sketch I did by the way, a quick google will give you versions of this diagram that are a lot more detailed & accurate lol!)

This image shows the general places on a face where features normally sit. So, eyes halfway down the head, corners of the mouth match up with the pupils when staring straight ahead, five eyes can fit between each side of the head, bottom of the nose lies halfway between the eyes and chin, etc. 

Top tip! Try not to confuse the top of the head to the hairline, as this can often make a face look too long! 

Of course, this becomes more complicated when you want to draw a face from another angle (which I won’t go into for this post). 

Face shape, eye size, nose size, etc, can also affect how you approach these rules. So use these proportions more as a guide than anything to follow religiously!

Part 2 - Face Shape

A lot of artists, myself included, gets caught in the ‘same face’ syndrome. Which is basically when all your characters and people you draw end up looking suspiciously alike. (Don’t feel too bad about this, by the way, since even big companies like Disney suffer from this lol!)

A way to prevent this is to diversify your face shapes. 

These are a few quick examples, and my biggest piece of advice for this is to practise drawing as wide a range of faces as you can! Pick people of various races, sizes, genders, etc! 

This can be as simple as drawing people around you too, friends, family, colleagues, even yourself! 

Part 3 - Eyes

Similar to the last point, practising drawing a wide variety of eyes (differing in shape, colour, size, etc) will help you get a better grasp on how to draw them. 

Some more specific advise for this would be to map out where the actual eyeball is. This way, you’ll be able to figure out more effectively where to put things like the tear duct! 

Another thing to remember is the position of the pupil and iris, which can greatly impact the expression you’re going for. So, exposing more of the whites of the eye will make someone look scared/shocked, whereas less of the iris & pupil visible will look suspicious/shifty.

The image above is a few examples of how to sketch eyes & what to look out for when you’re doing your own drawings!

A final few things I want to comment on here is the position of eyelids, which can also greatly change the overall expression of a character. Eyelids differ from person to person, and can range from double, mono, hooded, deepset, etc. And as with all I’m talking about here, how the eyelid crease looks will change depending on the angle of the face. 

Part 4 - Nose

Noses are pretty confusing, if I’m being honest. 

One thing I remember learning from school was to use three circles to make up a forward facing nose. A bigger circle for the tip of the nose, and the a smaller one either side for the nostrils. This can help you to get an idea of how big you want your nose to be (and to check it fits with the proportions of the rest of the face). 

This method can also help to figure out the specific shape of the nose you want to draw. Placing the central circle lower than the other 2 will give the illusion of a bigger nose, whereas if it’s higher then it would look more like an upturned nose. Just have fun and play around with giving your noses interesting bridges and various sized nostrils, etc!

These are a few examples, but there are honestly endless combinations of noses you can experiment with!

Part 5 - Mouth

The first piece of advice I’d give you for drawing mouths, is to draw them in conjunction with the nose. Use the bit between the nose and mouth (which I just found out is called the philtrum lol) as a guide on how big or what shape to do the cupids bow as. 

I’d also recommend starting with the corners of the mouth, and then connecting them to for the middle of the mouth. This can help you get an understanding of what kind of expression you want (it often only takes a slight curl of the corner of the mouth in order to create some subtle change in feeling of the character). 

And something that I often do, is creating a subtle almost M shape for the centre of the mouth (think almost of a turtles mouth, but less extreme). This can give the lips more of a sense of 3 dimensionality than a simple line. 

These are just some examples of how I draw lips with no references as a guide. Another point I would suggest is to include the shadow of the lips on the chin, which can also help you to map out the size and shape of the chin itself. 

I feel it’s important to note that I’ve only including hints for closed, mostly neutral, expressions. So if you want me to do another blog post talking about expressions (like how to draw smiles, or other open-mouthed expressions) then let me know!

Part 6 - Ears 

I’ll admit that ears are not my strong suit, so there isn’t a tonne of advice I can offer here. (I once had an hour long breakdown over how bad my paintings and drawings of ears are lol... I wish I was kidding but I’m not pfft)...

This is a very... unhelpful image lol...

My main advice is to just... look at ears lol... Hopefully you’ll have better luck with them then me!

Hello! I wanted to ask you this bc I really admire your work and blog, and I get the sense that you're a person who can tackle nuance well (and I believe this topic deserves it). I've tried wording this as best as I could, and I'm sorry that it's very long.

I've started getting the impression that some parts of the Good Omens fanbase have been sort of contained, if that makes sense. I feel like small creators have a hard time getting attention to their work anymore. As if people are only looking at the same handful of established creators nowadays (and that those creators are only looking at one another). And by extension, content really only gets attention if it's liked/shared by certain people. And then on top of that, it really constricts a lot of topics in fic and art that get appreciated.

I know that the hype for Good Omens has died down in the past year and that explains a major dip in interest, but I still feel there's an imbalance. I see genuinely good work overlooked time and time again, and I worry that my own work has been looked over bc it simply hasn't been deemed a fan favorite. For a while it looked like there was an effort to boost smaller creators, but it's seems like it phased out pretty quickly. I will be honest, it's been a little discouraging. It feels like the Good Omens fanbase is a club a lot of us have been almost excluded from.

I wanted to know if I'm just imagining this whole scenario or if it's a thing others have noticed? If others have noticed, what can we do to spread some love?

I'm sorry if this came off the wrong way or like I'm scolding people. Or like I'm whinging like a needy child not getting enough attention. I'm curious and was wondering if it was worth asking someone else about. Thank you for reading! And thank you for responding if you do!

Overall, I agree. I don’t think you’re imagining things at all and I’ve certainly also noticed a decline in interest in my stuff since the start

This is a total theory, but I’m gonna put it forward cos it makes sense to me. When Good Omens started up everyone followed a load of people to get at the content and were reblogging and engaging all over the place. Spiderwebs of followers were formed. I think there are blogs who end up being more influential than others, it depends on what youre looking for in the fandom who that is for you, but there are always big sort of blogs that just reblog content to share it. I think they’re the things that change.

Cos what happens is interest wanes. Fans move on and go somewhere else. If you’re following and relying on a blog to show you lots of new art and they’re just not doing it any more, then you’re sort of left just seeing the popular stuff that gets cyclically reblogged.

For example, i was following, with notifications on, a blog that reblogged every bit of poc good omens fan art they came across. total mixed bag of quality, but it was fantastic and picked up blogs that were completely unknown to me. The person running it got tired and moved on, so i don’t have access to that any more. It’s a lost thread in my little spiderweb of access that cuts me off from so much and it’s a real loss

Alternatively, and this is the trap i fall into, you follow creators. Like what you said! So, when I see a post i like very much i go straight to OP and (after checking they’re not a terf or aphobic) i follow. This means i get new content from the source rather than relying on someone elses taste to have a chance of seeing it myself. However, it also means i’m not following many blogs that focus on reblogging a range of content, so i miss newcomers. I’m not ignoring newcomers, i simply don’t see them

Both approaches to who you follow come with the curse of as the fandom gets older, you don’t have a clear way to find new content or creators. There’s an early bird gets the worm element to it all

There’s also tumblr weird bad habit of not reblogging things. People who run personal blogs rather than themed blogs will like something and consider their work done, but that does nothing to help new art or new artists, cos it’s not permeated yet. That kills new content and content creators pretty thoroughly

So yeah, i think there’s a lot going on there, but you’re certainly not making it up and a lack of engagement on your posts isnt an indication that people don’t like it, it just means people haven’t seen it or have fallen for their habit of not reblogging things they really ought to share.

In terms of fixing this? That’s a toughie.

I don’t have a fix, but i agree the lethargy is tiresome. It’s a constant effort to get something to take off, i have to reblog stuff four or five times before it starts moving beyond my immediate sphere of influence. But it makes sense, there are less fans and the fans there are aren’t out looking for new people to follow.

but i don’t like ending on a negative, so i’ll talk about some options or ideas! even though i don’t have the kind of influence someone would need to be heard

In my perfect world (and i repeat this is my day dream, i do not pretend it is well thought out or fair for all) i would remove the like function; either reblog it or you don’t get to keep an access. I would see more blogs that reblog content to a theme. I would see blogs that search out new creators. I would see newsletters that name new creator blogs that have engaged recently. I would see blogs that make it a challenge to themselves to reblog art and fic that has less than 100 notes. I would see more low stress fan events, more prompt lists and less organised zines.

But that’s all a lot of work for individual people to take on (except the likes vs reblogs thing, but that a real personal dislike of mine). I’ve tried to take part, I run @goodomensevents which is a blog where i reblog any general community event on tumblr that doesn’t cost money to take part in. But i don’t really think it has much impact, cos i thought of it too late in the game and no one wants to follow new good omens blogs anymore.

which i understand. i’m happy with my dash, i don’t feel like it’s lacking. I love who i follow. my mutuals talk to me and aren’t cunts. And i have no idea how to find new creators even though i may want to.
