Loops & Grips: What is it?

So I’ve had this blog for so long, I just figured it was time to talk about loops and grips. I am still learning about shadows, so I won’t talk about it yet, but when I feel like I’m educated enough, I’ll make a post about that as well.

Why do they exist?

MBTI is a very intriguing system, but it’s a very flawed system, especially when you consider that most humans are flawed, and a lot of us go through rough patches. While not everyone who is mentally or emotionally unhealthy is going to be in a loop or a grip, it’s a way to describe an unbalanced stack.

Sometimes, when you’re going through something, you tend to ignore your upper traits, and tend to lean into your tertiary or inferior traits a bit more.

Many criticize this theory, as it didn’t come from Katherine Cook Briggs or Isabel Briggs Myers (the founders) or Carl Jung, the man who’s ideologies inspired them.

Loops

A loop is essentially an unbalanced personality, and happens when a person is mentally unhealthy or has struggled to develop some of their traits. A loop is when a person struggles to use their auxiliary trait (second trait) and uses their tertiary trait.

It only happens when someone is going through something very painful, or traumatic, or they simply have not been raised in a good environment.

Examples include:

Carl Gallagher from Shameless: Who is going through an Se-Te loop. He is a bully and tends to do things for the sake of sensory activity, or to assert authority, especially as a child.

Elsa from Frozen: It can be argued that Elsa is in an Si-Fi loop, as she is seen ignoring her Te a lot, and wallowing in her emotions due to trauma.

Is it a loop or are you mistyping them?

What are they like when they are at their healthiest? Whether their healthiest be before or after we see them in a show, book or movie. A healthy person will definitely be more well balanced and their cognitive functions will be stacked in the right way.

Elsa, at her healthiest, and even sometimes when she is unhealthy will lean into her Te a lot more, making quick and logical decisions. Carl, as we see him develop as a character and create connections with better role models, definitely uses his Fi alot more, and, again, even when he wasn’t at his healthiest, we STILL saw glimpses of his Fi.

Grips

A grip, is when someone who is in an unhealthy state, relies alot more on their inferior function, and as the least developed function, may act differently because of it.

For example:

Lucifer from Hazbin Hotel: As a dominant Ne user, he leans into his Si alot more, after consistently being let down by Heaven and falling into a depression. But because Si is his least developed function, and he’s only leaning into it, he has a negative view on the world and inflicts this on everyone else.

Luisa from Encanto: As an Fi dom, we see Luisa lean into her Te a lot, especially when stressed. However, as her heart developed function, her Te manifests in overworking herself, and stressing herself out even more.

Is it a grip or are you mistyping them?

Again, what are they like at their healthiest? Is it obvious that the function is not their most comfortable function? In the case of Lucifer, we see at his healthiest, he is extremely idealistic and full of ideas that many find unrealistic. It’s only after those dreams get crushed one too many times that he starts to lean into his inferior function more.

With Luisa, when she isn’t stressed, and on occasion, when she is stressed, we see she’s emotionally driven. She wants to protect her sister and her family, and dwells on her own emotions a lot, but with the pressure she’s constantly under, she has to push her emotions aside or she cracks.

Loops & Grips should not be the only criteria for typing a character or yourself.

The thing about loops and grips is that you’re usually not going to be in one 100% of the time. There are times, usually when you’re not under as much stress, that you’re going to be able to use your functions in a balanced way.

Also, think of when you’re at your healthiest… what functions do you mean into? If it’s the same functions, then it’s probably not a grip or a loop.

That being said, I have typed very few characters with the idea of their loop in mind, in fact, so few, that finding examples was definitely a struggle here.

Explanation on an MBTI loop. Not an expert. May change later.

Loops in MBTI occurs when a type begins to cycle between their dominant and tertiary function, completely ignoring the auxiliary and inferior. This is mainly caused from stress and can be continous until finally broken.

INTP Function stack: Ti - Ne - Si - Fe

When in a Ti - Si loop, INTP is stuck trying to find answers from previous experiences. They can get trapped in constant rumination about the past as they try to find the answer(s) to their issue(s). However, this does more harm than good as they will start to fixate on their past mistakes. Overanalyzing the things they could and should have done will paralyze them into fear and self doubt. Can be very indecisive. Their overthinking will stump their Aux Ne from functioning properly, which can cause INTP to get trapped with certain routines and structures (even if it is not benefitting them). Without the help of Ne, a looping INTP struggles to form new ideas and perspectives. It makes it difficult for INTP to be innovative.

To escape the loop, an INTP needs to learn to utilize their Ne properly again. They can try to put themselves in new opportunities that will get their Ne to function; new opportunities will hopefully get INTP to explore new ideas and concepts. Brainstorm possible solutions to get their gears going. Learn to be more accepting of their own mistakes and failures, be more self compassionate.

Hi MBTI-Notes, I am 28M. I need help analyzing myself. I have this urge to identify what my MBTI is and my mind tells me that when I find the perfect answer, I will be able to grow properly and solve issues only then… I feel comfort predicting and gathering information (Ni?) even obsessing with this topic (Ti loop?). I read and watch videos to find the truth, to finally find myself. I am restless and also addicted to sweets, gaming, 18+ content, binging tv series whenever I feel overly stressed or bad or just unable to handle things…

I have been in search for my MBTI for 3 years now and started with the 16 personality test from Briggs ended up being ENFJ. Later I became ENTP for 1.5 Years now. But recently I started researching the functions and everything changed, I feel that I have more insight about myself. But the more questions I can answer the more uncertainties arise.

I have been bullies as a teen because of my unique looks and behavior. Also having parents that were immature in their behavior so I learned to be someone else entirely and forgot who I am. Thats the reason why I am trying to learn psychology and the functions, to put myself somewhere and feel like myself but also find the right path into the future.

I have so much chaos in my mind, what is right and how I should be, what should I be doing? I have this burning desire to become something great, to create something great, to finally find what I really want and spend all my energy getting there. But so far there are only contradictions. (Ni without proper Judging function?) 

So many types fit me so that I don’t even know but I want to be sure.

I have some sort of perfectionism problem.

I used to be very nice to people until these experiences from the past kinda broke me. I can’t cry, I feel like my feelings are all sealed up, I don’t feel much empathy towards peoples problems, I know that it is bad what they feel but I just cant connect or be concerned.

For past two weeks I think that I might be Ni dominant, because Se grip seems so much like me. But also Ti grip would be a possibility because my mind gets hyper fixated on processing and finding a solution. 

I behave like a “stereotypical” INTJ, cold and alone, but I know thats not how INTJs are, just to underline stereotypical.

For INFJ I feel like I don’t care about people and their opinions too much and I do not tend to people please (considering that I am mentally not so healthy)

I also think I am using Te because I try doing things efficiently, but I noticed I just don’t like spending too much time on details (lazy?).

I am so stressed because of my job and I feel like I can’t relax or recharge so I revert to physical pleasures.

How does one spot an entp? Truly, I think we're pretty easy to spot, albeit maybe not super super common ~5th least common, so it's not too bad.

ENTPs walk the line between the traditional definitions of introvert and extrovert. So we're not always spot-able, especially if we're drained or not too interested in the conversation around us. I just note this to say that it's not witty-town all year round. Also, when we're younger, many things that we say are misses more than hits so another note depending on your age!

ENTPs will want to discuss to understand (not to offend, though sometimes it may come off as argumentative). Truly we just like understanding things on all sides directly, and so you might hear an ENTP bouncing different angles of a problem very objectively, and very openly/comfortably agreeing or disagreeing with people.

If you notice someone who is just super charming and witty... and then you don't see them, talk to them, hear from them for months, and then suddenly they're there again and wow, still a charmer, are they flirting with you, wow they know everyone, oop they're gone again....... ya that's an ENTP

ENTJs in Te-Se Loop

Tertiary Se (ENxJ): As these two types overindulge Ni, they become increasingly inflexible, extreme, and out of touch with reality. Therefore, the tertiary Se function should be used to bring them back to what really matters in life. When a person listens to the need for tertiary Se development, they will suddenly start to value being more: amenable, adaptable, grounded, present, adventurous, fun (in enjoying simple pleasures), honest and accepting (about human weaknesses and limitations), attuned to beauty and the sublime. If one resists Se development, overindulgence of Ni is likely to lead to increasingly negative consequences, perhaps repeatedly shooting oneself in the foot by indulging unreasonable ideals/demands that create the perfect conditions for eventual defeat/disappointment. However, if Ni has remained chronically underdeveloped for whatever reason, a person is likely to develop serious Se looping tendencies in adulthood as a lame attempt to cope with development failure. With Se looping, they can continually excuse the lack of Ni development and justify never slowing down to properly introspect. Unfortunately, over time, this produces a creeping sense of losing control that can lead to inferior Ti/Fi grip.

this allows bakon to regenerate infinitely and helps him survive any biological attack (and immunity system level ones too) but because of how young bakon is his regen and other benifits stated above are more slower, if he was older it would be faster and more potent

this immortality also bounds the soul to the body meaning if someone with this type of immortality were to die theoretically they would literally cease to exist and would both be incapable of being revived and be unable to go to an afterlife

backstory/lore:

back when bakon was five years old his dad worked as a scientist in a lab, one day a immortal killing monster the lab had created broke out and seeked vengence against the scientists but it escaped the lab before it could do that, bakon's dad wanted to get bakon down stairs so he can get bakon to do some chores but the moment he did the monster came bursting out catching his dad off guard and brutally mauling him to death (it was quite graphic) the monster was gonna go after bakon but his mom came in time and used herself as a human shield resulting with her also being mauled to death, in the end it was only bakon left of which the monster attempts to maul him two but bakon manages to get it to back off albeit bakon is injured due to his attempt at blocking the monsters attack, this allowed the monster to attempt to stun bakon down with a tackle but he dodged it and grabbed a kitchen knife and after a whole entire battle, bakon wins but heavily injured and scarred both mentally and physically. bakon then has to bury both the monster and his parents in the back yard of which he obviously was crying but due to his imagination and him not having a clear memory of the event bakon belives it was raining making him associate the rain with bad events and caused him to hate it. after burying his parents bakon had to survive on his own and within three years he has completely changed as he became more serious and had an adult-like mindset and behavior and being more mature, he also was more morally grey as he started to resort to stealing the wallets of the random people that picked fights with him but eventually one day he met Mr rimoman whom claimed to know his dead father and gave him the promise of a better life in a better world only if bakon temporarily became rimoman's "eyes" of which bakon accepting out of the fact he didnt want to continue to be like the way he was, rimo also used the blue pheonix that was next to him to heal up the scars bakon had and after bakon was sent to other worlds and dimensions outside of robloxia and he truly felt freedom for the first time and he was like an injured cat warming up to the world finally trusting people again and this eventually resulted with bakon age reggressing to finally have the childhood he had lost all those three years that was taken away from him and not only that but he got a house other than his childhood home he can't return back to for some reason that house being in the cross side where he also was introduced to lego jaclk and some of the other people there but then one day rimo finally cracked, for he kinda somewhat saw himself in bakon and he hated it he hated it so much that one the day he cracked his little "mask" and it broke, he started to self-project his self hatred on bakon whether that be physical or mental it continued and throughout all of that bakon believed and still believed rimo is fine and he will get better and that he is a good person at heart just a bit hateful towards himself, but sometimes bakon belived some things rimoman had said as it was some what the truth, eventually rimo had stop using bakon as his "eyes" and yet his behavior towards bakon worsen and instead of self-projecting bakon he is now been just sadistic towards him, treating bakon as a pawn. one day bakon finally figured out how to dimension hop and travel without the help of rimoman and with that he figured out how to he never was able to return back to his childhood home ꩇׁׅ݊ιռᦔ𝔰ɔʌ℘ꫀׁׅܻ of which he currently lives in although robloxia is a tad bit missing some things like the outside
