Brain worm of the day: Christian symbolism without preaching Christianity.
Literally just that, Berk can write a book, with a Christian story (Lazarus) on the title cover, and carry that story metaphorically through the entire book, while never making me, a person with severe trauma due to Christianity, ever feel triggered.
Because it's just symbolism, it's just metaphors, and to be quite frank, sometimes it's fueling my religious blasphemy:
Tumblr media
That's it, that's all you get for the day, they're good at what they do, and what they do is sometimes weaving Christian symbolism with Greek mythology with a fictional angel with a single episode of the fictional angels show with their own personal grieving process until you're not actually sure where one of those starts and one of those ends.
As always, the source is always more interesting than anything I have to say, so if you haven't yet, go read Lazarus Rises(amongst other things) and follow them on their Tumblr @icaruspendragon because they write so many cool things beyond just their published book.

One thing I had heard about Priory was it was hard to get into because of the amount of worldbuilding (which to YOU maybe but rip I’m built different) but i think by having some of our main POV characters be put into cultures other than their own she gets away with a fair bit of exposition feeling fairly natural. Like, of course Ead is going have a few paragraphs where she sifts through Inysh culture and society because she literally has to understand it to perform her various levels of duties, but she doesn’t innately understand it like one born into it. The clash between her upbringing and her new role informs us of both but it makes sense for her to be consciously thinking about it. Same with Loth going around Yscalin in shock, or Niclays being free to explore the city after being banished to a tiny island. They’re going to be commenting on things around them way more than your average born-citizen

When Wayne moved to Hawkins fifteen years ago to case the town, he hadn’t expected to end up staying. What kind of hunter purposefully cocked up an assignment? A bad one apparently, but he was fine with that. He’d been sent to the small town in rural Indiana after a strange rise in creature sightings, that sort of thing didn’t take much time getting back to the kind of hunters led by his younger brother, Al.
He quickly found out that Hawkins was acting as some sort of beacon to supernatural beings, attracting them to seek out and settle down in the town surrounded by thick wooded areas. Weres of every kind. Vamps of every kind. Witches, shapeshifters, banshees, and just about every other kind of creature you could think of.
What started out as a task to infiltrate the town to get a better idea of the severity of the infestation quickly turned into something more, because then he got to know the residents as more than just what they were and began seeing them as neighbours and friends. They trusted him and welcomed him into their communities, even the supernaturals grew to trust him and he even watched some of them grow up. He couldn’t hurt these people, they weren’t doing anything wrong.
Wayne never heard much from his younger brother or the other hunters, he occasionally sent Al letters downplaying what was actually going on in Hawkins, it was a low level threat that almost wasn’t worth dealing with. He should have known better, almost two decades of peace sounded like long overdue trouble for a semi-retired hunter, and word travelled fast to him that there were two men asking about him. He knew his brother would eventually show up to track him down, but he never expected his nephew to be dragged out with him.
Albert Munson was a ruthless hunter, more of a shoot first and ask questions later kind of guy. Eddie though... The boy he’d left behind was more sort hearted than his old man, he wouldn’t want to hurt innocent people. Wayne would learn that Eddie didn’t agree with the majority of what his father believed, and refused to be brainwashed with his ideologies towards supernatural beings.
The real trouble begins when Al (unbeknownst to Wayne) set up a few traps in the woods and actually ends up catching a Werecub, who lets out the most heartbreaking cries Wayne has ever heard - but he knew what kind of cry that was, it was a cry for help and not just of fear.
“You’ve been slacking, Wayne. Barely a few hours here and we’ve already caught us a baby monster.” Al was so pleased with himself, standing proudly below the strung up cub with his arms crossed. It made Wayne sick to think that he had once been exactly the same as his brother, conflicted at the time or not, he had participated in the same things.
“Dad, there’s no us. I don't want anything to do with this. You’re hurting him, he’s probably just a kid.” Eddie denied, keeping himself well back from the situation, wanting no part in it.
It wasn’t long before the trio heard an answering howl to the cries, high and haunting and designed to travel - it sounded like a very pissed off mama, and suddenly they felt very unprepared for this expedition. They were expecting a Werewolf (the most common type of Were) or a Werebear (because of the cub), but what came crashing through the undergrowth was a monstrous coyote-looking creature, and she was livid. Her fur was shiny and well maintained, dark rusty shades of brown mottled with grey and blonde streaks. She chased the three of them through the woods until they were far enough away for the Werecoyote to double back and rescue her pup.
“Wooah boy, that was a close one!” Al chuckled after they stopped running to catch their breaths, as if they’d just been out for a jog in the woods and not chased by something that could have easily caught up with them.
The worst part was that Wayne definitely thought he recognised the Werecoyote, and if he recognised the Were then he definitely recognised him. Steve Harrington, resident Were and local babysitter to some of the younger supernatural beings in Hawkins, which meant the cub was most likely one of the kids he took care of and considered his pack. He absolutely knew who Wayne was, and now he knew what Wayne was.
“Relax, Wayne, it was just a ‘yote.” Al clapped him on the shoulder, something he bet his brother thought would be assuring and friendly, but it absolutely wasn’t. “Could’ve been worse. Would’a been a whole other story if we’d attracted a wolf.” - Wayne didn’t think so, but he was the one who was going to be suffering the consequences. - “C’mon, take your brother and nephew home for some grub, all that running’s worked up an appetite.”

Little Miss Perfect
Straight A's, straight forward, straight path. Nancy Wheeler didn't cut corners. She was top of her class and worked hard for it. Was everything her parents ever wanted from her and more. On time for everything, the perfect student. Social to a point but not overwhelming, and never irresponsible.
She was perfect. The perfect daughter. The perfect student. The perfect example. It was what she was, and she would never mess it up.
So she dated a boy who liked her and was popular. Had a bit of a reputation, but that didn't matter. Her parents liked him, and he loved her. That's all that mattered. Until someone asked if she loved him, and her mind drew a blank. That relationship was over.
But that's ok, there was another boy that liked her. And she liked him, they had a connection. Fought monsters together and bonded more than she had with anyone in a while. So they dated, and he loved her, and she loved him. But as the distance grew between them, both physically and metaphorically, she learned that love was just platonic.
Everything felt wrong. How could she have been in two relationships where she didn't feel the same as they did. It was just not right, she told herself. She rushed into a relationship where the feelings were never there. Someday she'll fall in love with a man, have the relationship that's expected of her. Her perfection wouldn't be scratched.
Hopefully.
One day, Robin came over for a sleepover. They've grown close since spring break, and it's nice. Nancy hasn't felt like this in years, this seen. Robin just gets her in a way that no one has. It's refreshing.
So she lets loose, comfortable in this space. They drink and Nancy's mind gets hazy. Her eyes keep wandering to Robin's lips, watching them as they part with laughter and bright smiles. Mind wandering to how they would feel, what it would be like if Nancy just leaned it. Shaking her head each time to get those thoughts out of her head.
Because if those thoughts were true, Nancy was anything but perfect. Nothing like the throne she built for herself to sit on.
The night continues, and the thoughts don't stop. They keep coming back, looping in her mind over and over again. Until Robin says something that makes Nancy burst out in laughter, causing her to lean into Robin's space.
They lock eyes, faces inches apart. The tension so strong, even the sharpest knife couldn't cut through it. Losing control, Nancy leans forward and presses her hips to Robin's. Quickly retreating as she realizes her mistake, but not stopping Robin when she dips back in and kisses her again.
Suddenly, all the pieces slot into place as Nancy returns the kiss. Pulling Robin closer as her heart starts beating faster than it ever has. Her body lights up in flames with every touch, igniting her heart in a way that never has before. Everything feels more right than it ever has, and her world breaks in two.
Nancy isn't perfect, not in the way she thought she was. She'll never be able to like a boy the way that she likes Robin. The way she likes a girl. Remembering the flutters her heart would make every time a pretty girl would pass by her locker, and how it would be shoved so far deep to never be thought of again.
Because Nancy couldn't be perfect and like girls. But as Robin keeps kissing her, making her mind feel hazy in the best way possible, perfection rewrites its definition in her mind. Now it includes who Nancy really was in its definition, not what people expected her to be.
Nancy Wheeler wasn't Little Miss Perfect in her society's eyes, but she was in hers.

So like loosely based on their au but I have not been paying that much attention despite how cool it seems so really just an excuse for me to draw some weird shit.
Also all of this is like massive. You stand next to that eye in the middle and you are as big as the pupil (I should draw that).

When I say the Collector is lonely I don't mean it in a "aw they're misunderstood" way I mean it in a "they've been trapped in limbo for God knows how long and that would drive anyone to insane levels of desperation" way. They definitely did some shit to get themselves trapped there, but if they didn't have many moral boundaries back then they CERTAINLY don't now. If Phillip offered them an out AND a chance to take symbolic revenge on the thing that trapped them, of course they took it. Anyone would have.

@bi-demon-ium I can't believe this has taken me this long, but: MBS Librarians AU
Nicholas is obviously The Librarian, Milligan is The Protector, Number Two is the Secretary/Accountant/Whatever Charlene's job was, and Rhonda is her Assistant
The kids are Librarians-in-Training (Mostly to protect them from the Things happening Outside), and Kate kind of opted out of being a Librarian to learn from Milligan
