This bust shot came out wonderfully by swampjaws! I love the detail and the rendering. They look like they are leaping out of the screen at you!

Lore Nugget Arhulians have a pharyngeal jaw, like that of a moray eel. It is a second jaw that is normally nested inside the throat, that can be extended forward into the mouth. For eels, it's to help them swallow prey since they cannot expand their mouths like regular fish. For Arhulians, it's to help them swallow large prey whole and alive.

The "bite" is a four stroke process: The outer jaw clamps down on the subject > the inner jaw moves forward and bites down > the outer jaw opens > the inner jaw retracts > repeat

(Seriously, if you want to do creature design, just plagiarize marine biology.)

Another feature is their split tongue. Arhulian tongues are hollow and can be used like a straw, or use the prehensile split end to reach for and ensnare small prey. Particularly small specimens can be swallowed by the tongue itself!

The purpose for Arhulians to be capable of ingesting prey whole and alive is that their primary way of feeding is by keeping the prey in a suspended state while feeding off of their psionic energy, which provides significantly more nourishment then chemical processes. Although a seemingly limitless source of power, ingested beings have a limit to how much they can be 'drained'. Overfeeding will put the prey in a comatose state, and if not stopped; the beings bond between soul and body snaps - Functionally speaking - undergoing brain death - where even if their body is 'alive' there is no consciousness at the helm. Thus, prey is (usually) released before being drained to a critical state.

This psionic energy not only sustains the Arhulian far more efficiently than chemical feeding, it allows the Arhulian fuel their psionic metabolism. This metabolism can be responsible for synthesizing, transmuting, or disposing of materials from within their bodies. Essentially - pulling energy and matter from nowhere.

Of course, Arhulians have the means to do things the 'traditional' way with organic matter to sustain themselves, it's just a lot less efficient. Particularly large and/or powerful Arhulian morphs reach a level of energy demand that chemical feeding is impractical to sustain them, and they exclusively feed off of psionic energy. "Rumors have it they were once the undisputed ruling species of their... place of origin, literally devouring all other competition. These 'Arhulians' then developed a more 'humane' way of feeding that did not result in permanent consequences for their prey, seemingly out of guilt and a desire for stewardship, or so they say. Not sure how much I buy that, but hey, if a two ton 'badger-pede' wants to pull it's punches, we shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth... er, pun intended."

hi! i found your blog looking for other people who are into protecting pokemon! out of curiosity, what inspired you to become a ranger?

I was only a kid when I first heard about Rangers and when the fixation didn’t fizzle out like so many had, my parents agreed that, if I worked hard at the Ranger School, they’d agree to let me go abroad. I liked the appeal of teaming up with pokemon to help the community and keeping things running smoothly.

The idea of pokeballs also was fun up until I was a certain age and honestly they’re still cool to me because we know they’re little luxury environments for pokemon to stay in, but having gone through depression and junk I know that being cooped up can be terrible so hearing that rangers used Stylers appealed to me a lot. It gave pokemon the option to stick around permanently or not and I like that! Ember is my only Pokemon that I have a ball for since he was my starter when I was still in Unova.

The process of finding a host family was long but I met this lovely elderly couple that were so happy to have a young set of arms around to help them around their property (they catered to a lot of weddings and parties as a venue because they had a sizeable amount of land that they kept up with!)

Living with them taught me a lot about the different ways Pokémon and people live and coexist together and a lot of life skill type stuff too! They unfortunately passed a few years ago and being that at that point I was already a fully fledged ranger and couldn’t always be there to take care of the property, they willed it to a trusted family friend to keep the venue going. I was given the house though. Lovely place.

My Arhulian Original Species can do this! Granted it's more like dismantling someone's body at the cellular level and wiring them into theirs, but still. And even the mind of the assimilated one is preserved as well. So not even a loss of life is involved... Technically.

We have now met the main phantom characters in the world of Yokai, as they stand now. Phantoms and the Dreamscape have played a huge role in the lore of Yokai SMP, so let's have a closer look at

Have you always wanted to be part of the club, but weren't born in the Dreamscape? No problem! Just die!

Phantomisation is the process by which a soul bonds with a Dreamscape and (usually) turns into a phantom. It begins as soon as you enter the Dreamscape, if you aren't native to it, and may take days, months or years depending on the whims of the Dreamscape*.

Subjects often first notice their throat getting sore, though this is by far not the first change. A sore throat is a sign of the inner eye forming, which helps phantoms find prey that hasn't slept in a while. By that point, however, the blood has already changed from what it once was. As the process continues, the inner eye will fully form and inner organs slowly wither away, until only void is left. The subject will gradually forget what their prior life was like and live only to feed the Dreamscape. A new phantom is born.

*Not everyone can phantomise, unfortunately. A stay in the Dreamscape is dangerous to any outsider, and there is a good chance you just die before any change occurs. Though in this case, you also now fed the Dreamscape, which is basically what phantoms do! Good job!

The setting inspired me to write! Everyone on my time line should check it out!

Hello, I just wanted to say I am amazed by the depth of lore and character you've created surrounding the giant rabbit Hyden and the other characters in that universe. Are you posting these images as part of a larger comic? Are they illustrations based on excerpts from a novel you're working on? It's hard for me to piece everything together from the captions. Basically I'm saying I'm super invested in this story and I would love to see the entire book or graphic novel or whatever that puts all these pieces together. Does that exist/will it exist?

I'm totally answering this way to late, BUT! Since Kwillow and I have gotten a number of questions asking similar stuff so I'm gonna use your ask as an opportunity to answer...

There is no single big novel or comic (at least not at the moment, we're working on finishing other projects first!), it's more of a just for fun series of vignettes, mini-comics, and other stuff! There is an underlying story but it's more gestured at and told in snapshots rather than told linearly from start to end.

I did put together a website to serve as an FAQ of sorts! Finished it just now. That should hopefully answer some of the common questions about what's going on, what terms mean, and how things connect together.

We next plan to organize things into a clearer "timeline", with the story's different "arcs" tagged accordingly and an organizational page listing important moments and linking important comics/vignettes. So, that's coming up... hopefully in the next month. (But who knows with how busy I am lately, ack...)

Thank you for the kind words though! We honestly never planned for this to turn into such a big project or get such wide recognition, so it's super flattering that people are interested enough to know more about our silly villainous furry nonsense.

We're excited to see so many friends using Hyper City in their comics. Ashe created it to justify crossovers where it wpuldn't make sense otherwise, and explain why a lab would be under an art studio, and I found the concept interesting and got to work with it and expand on it.

So for any who also want to know how it works, here is what we have established so far:

Hyper City is always there if you are looking for it. It exists outside of reality and once you leave the town you are in, it is always a 20 minute drive away off a road tou've never seen. No matter where in the world or what world or reality you are in.

Once inside the City it operates on its own laws. Magic users require a license, shapeshifters have to be registered, etc. If unsure, it has a mayor. Mayor is not a fan of us in canon. Eirher way, they have protocol for various realities.

The city exit will always send you where you came from. So it is still hard to visit others without direct travel. But easy to set up a spot in the city to meet up.

The city is huge, and has its own set of other mysteries, rumors, and stories. The reality hub aspect us just the tip of the iceberg.

If you are ever in need of a location and can't think of where something exists, Hyper City is there for all our friends to use. It's a strange city. Go ahead and add to it if you want. ^-^

Bezel's defeat part 5

After Bezel was cleaned up with his wounds properly treated and Slushi & Cofi working on making him a new suit, Chikn Nuggit tried to make amends with the former doomsday clock once he was settled in bed by bringing an offering. It would only be until morning that the demigod puppy would tell him about the offer to help him break the curse. Bezel seemed to still be feeling hurt and in a bad mood after all that happened, since he secretly viewed Chikn as a friend in his own twisted way, so Chikn just didn't make much conversation. but by some miracle, they somehow came to an agreement without knowing it just by Chikn showing that he cares.

Could it be that they'll become friends?

Niadris, The Arhulian

Amazing gift art/raffle pic from @chocodile ! Niadris, is the main character/sona of my Arhulian original species.

Niadris stands about 8-1/2 feet tall, and weighs about 2500 pounds.

Niadris is a "young" Arhulian at a concious age of 37, and a born age of 22. Arhulians live indefinitely - and due to their hereditary memory - they spend most of their youth inside their parent's abomen learning and sharing in memories and learned experiences.

Niadris is quite intelligent and perceptive, but also has little experience in dealing with ordinary people. (The ones that don't run on sight anyways.) They are honest and well-meaning, if blunt.

In the current setting Niadris is in, they are a lone Arhulian in their region. As a foreigner in every sense of the word, they have a deep longing for connection. Although scary and certainly dangerous, above all Niadris is a lonely being looking for compassion and closeness. Although they don't have a heart in the sense like we do, their tough exterior hides a tender soul.

What was it like moving away from Unova for the first time? Do you ever get time to visit?

Moving away was hard at first. I had some friends in Unova that I was leaving behind, but I was close to hitting rock bottom otherwise anyway so when I passed my entrance exams, my parents were cool about me moving out to board there. It was hard to begin with because I went from my familiar hometown with my parents and three younger siblings to a whole new place on the other side of the world with only a Tepig to my name so, especially for a 15-year-old, especially one with an anxiety disorder, that was really intimidating and scary.

Mostly I miss my siblings, but they never write these days and my parents only really write on special occasions like holidays and my birthday so I don't really feel the need to visit often? Like I think the last time I really saw my parents or siblings all together in person was when I moved away. I visited my parents and siblings separately a couple of times through the years but they never came to visit me so I've kinda just. Stopped.

I have a lot of vacation time saved up so I have a lot of time I can go visit but I don't put more effort into a relationship than the other party does. It's draining. I think if I ever did set up a trip back out there it would be for actual vacationing, no family involved intentionally. Revisit old stomping grounds kinda thing, y'know?
