Don't Panic! Recovering Lost Data from Your iPhone
We've all been there. That sinking feeling when you realize you've accidentally deleted important photos, messages, or contacts from your iPhone. Maybe you lost them after an update, misplaced your phone, or simply hit the wrong button. Before you resign yourself to lost memories and information, there are ways to get your data back! This article explores different methods for iPhone data recovery, so you can potentially retrieve those precious files.
Understanding Data Loss: Why Does it Happen?
There are several reasons why data might disappear from your iPhone:
Accidental Deletion: A simple slip of the finger and important files are gone.
Software Updates: Sometimes, updates can cause glitches that lead to data loss.
Hardware Issues: If your phone experiences physical damage or malfunctions, data might become inaccessible.
Formatting or Resetting: Restoring your iPhone to factory settings wipes out all data.
Lost or Stolen Phone: If your phone is lost or stolen, you'll need to recover data from a backup, if you have one.
The Importance of Backups: Your Digital Safety Net
The best way to ensure you can recover lost data is by having a regular backup routine. iPhones offer two main backup options:
iCloud Backup: This cloud-based storage automatically backs up your phone to Apple's servers.
iTunes Backup: You can connect your iPhone to a computer and back it up using iTunes software.
Restoring from a Backup: A Straightforward Solution
If you have a recent backup, restoring your iPhone is the easiest way to recover lost data. Here's how:
Connect your iPhone to your computer or Wi-Fi.
Open iTunes or go to the Settings app on your iPhone.
Follow the on-screen instructions to choose the relevant backup and restore your device.
iPhone Data Recovery Software: When Backups Fail
Even if you don't have a backup, there are still options! iPhone data recovery software can scan your phone's internal storage for lost files. These programs work by searching for traces of data that haven't been permanently overwritten.
Here's what to keep in mind when using data recovery software:
Success Rates Vary: There's no guarantee you'll recover everything, especially if the data has been overwritten.
Free vs. Paid Options: Free versions might have limitations, while paid software offers more features and higher success rates.
Research is Key: Read reviews and compare features before choosing a data recovery software program.
Here are some resources to get you started with iPhone data recovery software: You can explore options through a web search or consider a reputable service like iPhone data recovery.
Taking Precautions: Preventing Future Data Loss
Here are some tips to minimize the risk of losing data in the future:
Enable Automatic Backups: Set your iPhone to back up automatically to iCloud or iTunes.
Store Important Files Elsewhere: Consider saving important documents, photos, and contacts to a cloud storage service or your computer.
Think Before You Delete: Double-check before deleting files, especially photos, messages, and contacts.
Update Regularly: Keep your iPhone software up to date to avoid glitches that might cause data loss.
Conclusion: Don't Lose Hope!
Losing data from your iPhone can be stressful, but it doesn't have to be the end of the world. You can potentially retrieve those lost files by understanding the different methods for iPhone data recovery. Remember, prevention is key, so make regular backups a habit to keep your precious data safe.

the thing thats really bullshit about sonic dream team only being on apple arcade is that like. with console exclusives, while still annoying in some cases when you dont want to get a console for only one game/cant afford multiple consoles/etc, its still very likely for a lot of households to have multiple types of consoles. getting multiple consoles if often cheaper than getting one new phone, even. multiple people can share the consoles with ease.
most people do not have multiple smart phones to use, nor do they usually share their phones for others to play a game for an extended period (unless its their kid who doesnt have their own phone). and if theyre also playing the game, they couldnt share the game with someone else even if they wanted to, because mobile games usually dont have multiple profiles- neither would likely be able to fully experience the game that way.
and gaming consoles are also just for one thing: gaming. sure theres extra things to do on them, some can play cds, you can watch youtube, etc. but you dont do even close to the same amount of things on game consoles that you do on smartphones. these things are basically a necessity in modern life, and people want to use ones that has features they like since they use them DAILY. and most likely arent going to be convinced to change from a phone brand they like to something completely different, maybe even something they actively hate, just to play a certain game.

If anyone wants to know why every tech company in the world right now is clamoring for AI like drowned rats scrabbling to board a ship, I decided to make a post to explain what's happening.
(Disclaimer to start: I'm a software engineer who's been employed full time since 2018. I am not a historian nor an overconfident Youtube essayist, so this post is my working knowledge of what I see around me and the logical bridges between pieces.)
Okay anyway. The explanation starts further back than what's going on now. I'm gonna start with the year 2000. The Dot Com Bubble just spectacularly burst. The model of "we get the users first, we learn how to profit off them later" went out in a no-money-having bang (remember this, it will be relevant later). A lot of money was lost. A lot of people ended up out of a job. A lot of startup companies went under. Investors left with a sour taste in their mouth and, in general, investment in the internet stayed pretty cooled for that decade. This was, in my opinion, very good for the internet as it was an era not suffocating under the grip of mega-corporation oligarchs and was, instead, filled with Club Penguin and I Can Haz Cheezburger websites.
Then around the 2010-2012 years, a few things happened. Interest rates got low, and then lower. Facebook got huge. The iPhone took off. And suddenly there was a huge new potential market of internet users and phone-havers, and the cheap money was available to start backing new tech startup companies trying to hop on this opportunity. Companies like Uber, Netflix, and Amazon either started in this time, or hit their ramp-up in these years by shifting focus to the internet and apps.
Now, every start-up tech company dreaming of being the next big thing has one thing in common: they need to start off by getting themselves massively in debt. Because before you can turn a profit you need to first spend money on employees and spend money on equipment and spend money on data centers and spend money on advertising and spend money on scale and and and
But also, everyone wants to be on the ship for The Next Big Thing that takes off to the moon.
So there is a mutual interest between new tech companies, and venture capitalists who are willing to invest $$$ into said new tech companies. Because if the venture capitalists can identify a prize pig and get in early, that money could come back to them 100-fold or 1,000-fold. In fact it hardly matters if they invest in 10 or 20 total bust projects along the way to find that unicorn.
But also, becoming profitable takes time. And that might mean being in debt for a long long time before that rocket ship takes off to make everyone onboard a gazzilionaire.
But luckily, for tech startup bros and venture capitalists, being in debt in the 2010's was cheap, and it only got cheaper between 2010 and 2020. If people could secure loans for ~3% or 4% annual interest, well then a $100,000 loan only really costs $3,000 of interest a year to keep afloat. And if inflation is higher than that or at least similar, you're still beating the system.
So from 2010 through early 2022, times were good for tech companies. Startups could take off with massive growth, showing massive potential for something, and venture capitalists would throw infinite money at them in the hopes of pegging just one winner who will take off. And supporting the struggling investments or the long-haulers remained pretty cheap to keep funding.
You hear constantly about "Such and such app has 10-bazillion users gained over the last 10 years and has never once been profitable", yet the thing keeps chugging along because the investors backing it aren't stressed about the immediate future, and are still banking on that "eventually" when it learns how to really monetize its users and turn that profit.
The pandemic in 2020 took a magnifying-glass-in-the-sun effect to this, as EVERYTHING was forcibly turned online which pumped a ton of money and workers into tech investment. Simultaneously, money got really REALLY cheap, bottoming out with historic lows for interest rates.
Then the tide changed with the massive inflation that struck late 2021. Because this all-gas no-brakes state of things was also contributing to off-the-rails inflation (along with your standard-fare greedflation and price gouging, given the extremely convenient excuses of pandemic hardships and supply chain issues). The federal reserve whipped out interest rate hikes to try to curb this huge inflation, which is like a fire extinguisher dousing and suffocating your really-cool, actively-on-fire party where everyone else is burning but you're in the pool. And then they did this more, and then more. And the financial climate followed suit. And suddenly money was not cheap anymore, and new loans became expensive, because loans that used to compound at 2% a year are now compounding at 7 or 8% which, in the language of compounding, is a HUGE difference. A $100,000 loan at a 2% interest rate, if not repaid a single cent in 10 years, accrues to $121,899. A $100,000 loan at an 8% interest rate, if not repaid a single cent in 10 years, more than doubles to $215,892.
Now it is scary and risky to throw money at "could eventually be profitable" tech companies. Now investors are watching companies burn through their current funding and, when the companies come back asking for more, investors are tightening their coin purses instead. The bill is coming due. The free money is drying up and companies are under compounding pressure to produce a profit for their waiting investors who are now done waiting.
You get enshittification. You get quality going down and price going up. You get "now that you're a captive audience here, we're forcing ads or we're forcing subscriptions on you." Don't get me wrong, the plan was ALWAYS to monetize the users. It's just that it's come earlier than expected, with way more feet-to-the-fire than these companies were expecting. ESPECIALLY with Wall Street as the other factor in funding (public) companies, where Wall Street exhibits roughly the same temperament as a baby screaming crying upset that it's soiled its own diaper (maybe that's too mean a comparison to babies), and now companies are being put through the wringer for anything LESS than infinite growth that Wall Street demands of them.
Internal to the tech industry, you get MASSIVE wide-spread layoffs. You get an industry that used to be easy to land multiple job offers shriveling up and leaving recent graduates in a desperately awful situation where no company is hiring and the market is flooded with laid-off workers trying to get back on their feet.
Because those coin-purse-clutching investors DO love virtue-signaling efforts from companies that say "See! We're not being frivolous with your money! We only spend on the essentials." And this is true even for MASSIVE, PROFITABLE companies, because those companies' value is based on the Rich Person Feeling Graph (their stock) rather than the literal profit money. A company making a genuine gazillion dollars a year still tears through layoffs and freezes hiring and removes the free batteries from the printer room (totally not speaking from experience, surely) because the investors LOVE when you cut costs and take away employee perks. The "beer on tap, ping pong table in the common area" era of tech is drying up. And we're still unionless.
Never mind that last part.
And then in early 2023, AI (more specifically, Chat-GPT which is OpenAI's Large Language Model creation) tears its way into the tech scene with a meteor's amount of momentum. Here's Microsoft's prize pig, which it invested heavily in and is galivanting around the pig-show with, to the desperate jealousy and rapture of every other tech company and investor wishing it had that pig. And for the first time since the interest rate hikes, investors have dollar signs in their eyes, both venture capital and Wall Street alike. They're willing to restart the hose of money (even with the new risk) because this feels big enough for them to take the risk.
Now all these companies, who were in varying stages of sweating as their bill came due, or wringing their hands as their stock prices tanked, see a single glorious gold-plated rocket up out of here, the likes of which haven't been seen since the free money days. It's their ticket to buy time, and buy investors, and say "see THIS is what will wring money forth, finally, we promise, just let us show you."
To be clear, AI is NOT profitable yet. It's a money-sink. Perhaps a money-black-hole. But everyone in the space is so wowed by it that there is a wide-spread and powerful conviction that it will become profitable and earn its keep. (Let's be real, half of that profit "potential" is the promise of automating away jobs of pesky employees who peskily cost money.) It's a tech-space industrial revolution that will automate away skilled jobs, and getting in on the ground floor is the absolute best thing you can do to get your pie slice's worth.
It's the thing that will win investors back. It's the thing that will get the investment money coming in again (or, get it second-hand if the company can be the PROVIDER of something needed for AI, which other companies with venture-back will pay handsomely for). It's the thing companies are terrified of missing out on, lest it leave them utterly irrelevant in a future where not having AI-integration is like not having a mobile phone app for your company or not having a website.
So I guess to reiterate on my earlier point:
Drowned rats. Swimming to the one ship in sight.

Something I really lament is the move towards digital media. Slowly we start to never own the things we like. Even if we "buy" a digital game, or movie or show. It's locked behind a certain platform or service. Once it shuts down we lose it forever.
Tumblr media
(me when big booby anime girl explosion Is taken off of Netflix)
I also feel like there's a certain charm to owning physical media, like things you can hold and the satisfaction from pressing a clicky button or putting a disc or cassette in and seeing it work.
Tumblr media
(oooh so classy so retro so.. expensive in the modern day)
More people should try to make copies of what they own digitally, or try to buy physical media before it's lost from streaming services and digital storefronts forever. Like the case with certain games like Godzilla 2014 and Transformers War for Cybertron. They don't exist digitally anymore. Only hard copies exist outside of emulation and at insane resell prices like... INSANE ones for a mediocre Godzilla game
Tumblr media
So yea. Buy some more CDs of those albums you have on replay! Buy a DVD of that niche obscure anime you like! And most importantly PLEASE PLEASE START MAKING HARD BACKUPS OF SHOWS YOU LIKE THAT YOU PIRATE!!! media preservation is important!
Tumblr media
(me downloading every episode of Daredevil onto my hard drive to burn to a DVD later so I can give it to all my friends)
This is now going to be a Comprehensive guide on how to rip a CD
POLL TIME!
Burning and Ripping Disc's❤️❤️💕💕🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️
STEP ONE:
BUY A CHEAP BLU-RAY/DVD DRIVE FOR YOUR WINDOWS COMPUTER
here are some I recommend!!!
i personally use this pioneer one :)))
DVD drives in general are relatively cheap from 30-20 smackeroos, but Blu-ray drives are around 80-100 bucks depending on the manufacturer but offer better support for copying HD video such as on a Blu-ray.
STEP TWO:
FIND A PIECE OF MEDIA YOU ENJOY.
in this case its gonna be a CD!!
i really enjoy Vespertine by Bjork, but i wanna have it on my computer just in case anything happens to my CD. SO. ill open Windows Media Player
Tumblr media
(she hasn't changed since 2011 <3333 be urself girl)
NEXT
ill insert the disc into the player. and it'll start playing!
Pause the disc and go into Rip settings
Tumblr media Tumblr media
NEXT!! select the format!
if you want to conserve space and don't mind sacrificing audio quality select MP3! if you want to hear the same level of audio quality as preserved on the CD, select a format labelled LOSSLESS. I recommend .WAV files as they'll work with most devices including an android phone or iTunes on PC (more on that later ;3 )
NEXT!
create a folder on whatever u wanna save ur music to! (u can call it whatever u want the world is your oyster bestie)
THEN!!! FINALLY
go into more options on the Rip Settings menu!
select ur folder and press Rip CD!!!!
the fun thing of this now, is that you can pull these files on your computer and put it onto your Android device so you can listen to your hearts content without lugging around your CD in a player at high quality without any subscription service with free reign of who you can give your download to!
But Magenta! what if i have an iPhone?
ohohoo fear not bestie because iTunes on PC has an even EASIER way to do it
because simply putting in a disc with iTunes downloaded prompts THIS
Tumblr media
(oooo so new age)
and if you have apple music on your iPhone this will sync to your phone if you logged into iTunes on PC!!
thank you for coming to my TED talk

i am thinking about if getou and gojo really did continue talking afterwards and like the tiny intricate details and logistics of their lives.
they part in 2007. they had flip phones.
getou dies in 2016. they had iphones, instagram, snapchat, and dog filters.
when getou first goes rogue, shoko and gojo probably still have his number and are blowing his shit up. he probably has his phone off for the first days of it and turns it back on after. there’s no need to trash it out of a want to stay hidden—he won’t die unless they send an army or gojo himself.
when he turns his cell back on, he’s half-tempted to delete all his photos of jujutsu tech, with shoko, with gojo, and he gets as far as deleting maybe 15 of them in a heavy-breathed rage before convincing himself that maybe he doesn’t need to delete these. these are mementos of the said pinnacle of jujutsu, and they’ll come in handy when there are no non-sorcerers left.
he’s about to put the cellphone away before it rings. it’s satoru. he sighs. he calls once every day. it’s relentless, six or seven calls at minute intervals. getou almost laughs at it—the world’s strongest, desperate.
a month after his disappearance, he calls every night at ten. sometimes the pixels on his cell read 10:04, 10:21, the latest was 10:42. it becomes a ritual, agonizing every night wanting to finally beat gojo at something, to make him lose. but suguru finds himself holding his breath as 10pm wanders by every day, breathing easy only when his phone stops buzzing.
maybe one night he’s yet again alone in his shoebox apartment, assorted belongings littered about, convincing himself this was the best path for him. not jujutsu tech, the horrible missions, the loneliness, the taste. it feels better here, where no one else is happy.
he’s lost in a daze when his phone rings. it’s been three months and satoru won’t let up. every night. he scoffs and flips his cell open just to sneer and make a point, to feel powerful in his own mind, but once the line connects, he’s silent, mouth agape and eyes wide that he actually picked up.
he hears static from the other side, a shift of fabric, a shaky inhale. “suguru, you fucking idiot,” gojo sneers, loud on the other end, “what’d ya pick up by accident?”
getou can’t help but laugh from the bottom of his heart. his abs are burning and tears are falling by the time he contains himself, and memories flood back. selfies, dumb finds, food pics, phone bills crazy all from hours on the phone together. there’s satoru’s voice, and then there’s lofi samsung static-lined satoru’s voice. both sound like home.
“suguru—“
“satoru,” he breathes, and this is what it feels like to talk again. he’s lived in this apartment in silence for the past three months, voices only coming from his saved videos.
“come home, suguru.” they both know it’s impossible.
getou chuckles again into the speaker. he can almost see it, satoru’s spindly form, one leg propped up on a chair, elbow resting on it as he holds the phone in distaste. or maybe he’s completely prone, jolted awake by a voice he hadn’t expected to hear.
“satoru, you’ll be fine,” he chimes, hanging up. he squeezes his eyes shut and swallows a sigh, and just like that, he’s left home again.
three years later the calls have stopped. the iphone 4 comes out, and the world is awash in touch screens, app stores, and missing charging cables. it’s time for an upgrade, and getou powers off his flip phone—his youth—one last time and tucks it gingerly into a shoebox. he starts completely anew with no data to transfer.
gojo meticulously transfers every contact and double checks only one number. it’s the first call he makes on his new phone.
the number you have dialed is not in service—
he hangs up and slows his breathing. he doesn’t delete the number. suguru, the contact reads.
you’ll be fine.

This cannot be adulthood 🌴
Tumblr media
I just turned 21, formatted my phone last week so I've lost my diary app and I can't get my Google account so I'm ranting here cause I'm not using Google Docs either (eww where's the aesthetic is that).
I hate my existence. I'm fucking up uni one semester at a time might do an extra year. Umm I don't fit in anywhere. 🍃🌼
Tumblr media
I used to be an introvert when I was younger, like 15 cause I had a massive inferiority complex and then around 17 I became this sparkly bubbly funny type of person. Now I'm blank. I'm not sure what I am anymore and I think that's fine.🌫 Even though it's tough having to find yourself again at an age where everybody expects you to have already figured everything out. This is supposed to be the doing decade not the drawing board one, that was last year.... Right? 😩
I feel like a fairy. A wingless fairy, like Elina from Fairytopia or Rani from Pixie Hollow. Like I had my wings cut off and was banished to Earth and I've lived amongst humans so long I've forgotten I was a fairy. Now I realize I'm not like the rest of the humans around me.
I'm especially not doing things girls my age are supposed to be doing. I'm not in the club every weekend, I'm supposed to have a boyfriend that pays for everything and buys me the latest iPhone (Oh Please🙄), I'm supposed to run a small but successful beauty brand, I'm supposed to have a 3.5 cgpa, I'm supposed to go on dates, I'm supposed to know what I'm doing. I'm supposed to own a Stanley cup and buy a birkin. At the same time I'm supposed to be a strong Christian woman in the ushering department (I'd rather shave my head), I'm supposed to know how to cook perfectly (I do a bit), I'm supposed to be married with 4 kids next year (I don't even know whether I want children). Most of all I'm supposed to be happy and content cause I have parents and my sisters and I'm not out on the streets. WELL I'M SORRY NKECHI, HUMANS WERE BORN TO COMPLAIN. 🙄😩
Tumblr media
And worst of all last year I lost my faith, got into too much philosophy and over thinking and really started to unlearn everything I was ever told, now everything I thought I knew about existing feels like a lie. I was raised in a Christian family went to church every Sunday for 18 years and all of a sudden I realize some things about everything I learned just weren't sounding right. I mean angels?,😩 one true religion?, a man died on the cross to forgive my wrong doings ?, I'm going to hell for making not so bad choices?.... It doesn't make it less annoying that I lost that faith. I feel stupid and lied to.🙄 and now everyone looks at me weird when I don't want to go to church ugh.
I went through my snap story archives. I used to be happy. Life still wasn't perfect but I was happy, finding joy in the tiny things and moments. Vlogging everything like I had a million subscribers (I don't even have a channel). I was content with 5k in my account and 3 good friends and a cute boy I had a crush on in class. I was happy.
Tumblr media
All of a sudden it's 2025 and it's like I just woke up. Like what's going on did the party start without me. I suddenly have no plans, I used to plan everything all the time and I loved it. Now I just wake up and go back to sleep and rot in bed. I was doing that last year but it didn't feel as bad as it does now. I used to encourage everyone to find peace and joy in their own little existence but now look at me. Questioning the point of existence every hour.
Don't get me started on the homophobia. "gay people are disgusting and unnatural " HAVE YOU SEEN NICK FRIGGING NELSON. Oh please😩💕. Like I'm suddenly the weird one cause I don't believe all queer and trans people should be burned at the stake. Well I am sorry but I pay for my data subscriptions and they aren't cheap so I will watch men kiss as long as this obsession lasts😊
Tumblr media
I feel like a fairy that just realized she is one. Maybe I'll never get my wings but it doesn't mean I'll be human either. Am I delusional?, yes. Do I love it?, absolutely. 💕🌼
This is going to be in my drafts for a long time. 🎀🌼

Lost and Found: A Guide to iPhone Data Recovery
Tumblr media
iPhones have become an extension of ourselves, storing precious photos, videos, contacts, and memories. But data loss can happen due to accidental deletion, software glitches, or even water damage. The good news? In many cases, this data isn't truly gone! This article explores the world of iPhone data recovery, outlining potential causes of data loss, recovery methods, and where to find reliable service if needed.
Understanding Data Loss on iPhones
Data loss on iPhones can occur due to various reasons. Here are some common culprits:
Accidental Deletion: A simple swipe can sometimes lead to accidentally deleting important photos, messages, or contacts.
Formatting or Factory Reset: Resetting your iPhone to factory settings erases all data unless you have a backup.
Software Updates: While uncommon, software updates can occasionally lead to data loss.
Physical Damage: Water damage or dropping your iPhone can sometimes cause data loss due to internal hardware issues.
Sync Issues: Problems syncing your iPhone with iCloud or iTunes can lead to data loss if not addressed promptly.
https://appleexpert.ca/iphone-data-recovery-backup-expert/
Can You Recover Lost iPhone Data?
The answer depends on the cause of data loss and how quickly you act. Here's a breakdown of some data recovery possibilities:
Recent Deletions: If you've recently deleted data, it might still be recoverable from your iPhone's internal storage using specialized software. However, the success rate decreases the longer you wait.
iCloud Backup: If you have an iCloud backup enabled, you can restore your iPhone to a previous state, retrieving lost data.
iTunes Backup: Similarly, if you have a recent iTunes backup, you can restore your iPhone from that backup to recover lost data.
Data Recovery Services: For more complex data loss scenarios, professional data recovery services can attempt to recover data from damaged iPhones. However, these services are not guaranteed and can be expensive.
Recovering Lost iPhone Data: Steps to Consider
If you've experienced data loss on your iPhone, here are some initial steps to consider:
Stop Using Your iPhone: This helps prevent overwriting any deleted data that might still be recoverable.
Check Recently Deleted Folder: For recently deleted photos or messages, check your iPhone's Recently Deleted folder to see if they can be restored.
Look for Backups: If you have an iCloud or iTunes backup, consider restoring your iPhone from the backup to see if it retrieves your lost data.
When to Seek Professional iPhone Data Recovery Services
If you've exhausted all other options, or your data loss situation is complex, seeking professional iPhone data recovery services might be your best bet. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a service provider:
Success Rates: Look for a service provider with a proven track record of successful iPhone data recoveries.
Experience: Choose a company with experienced technicians who specialize in iPhone data recovery.
Security: Ensure the provider prioritizes data security and employs secure data recovery practices.
Cost Transparency: Get clear pricing information upfront to avoid unexpected charges.
Finding a Reliable Service Provider for iPhone Data Recovery
Finding a reliable service provider for iPhone data recovery is crucial. Here are some tips:
Read Online Reviews: Customer reviews can offer valuable insights into the service provider's reputation and effectiveness.
Check Certifications: Look for a service provider with relevant certifications or affiliations indicating their expertise in data recovery.
Ask Questions: Don't hesitate to ask questions about the recovery process, success rates, and costs before committing to a service.
The Final Word on iPhone Data Recovery
While data loss can be stressful, iPhone data recovery solutions like recent deletion recovery, backups, and professional services offer hope for retrieving your valuable information. By understanding your options and taking the right steps, you can potentially recover lost data and get your iPhone back to its full functionality.

Questions I Still Have About Alarm Clocks
Who designed the turquoise Sony, the one I love so much? Were they asked to make something beautiful? Or did the strokes and creases form faster than they could put them to paper? Were they a man, a woman, nonbinary? Did they feel trapped? Was the item designed by committee?
Is it okay to enjoy the physical beauty of things?
Did people laugh in the hallway between the cubicles and hang a list, where anyone could contribute ideas for features, combos, joyful moments? Did they feel demoralized, asked to make things to pull people out of sleep and into their cars? Or did they see it as a challenge?
Was it market-driven, alarm clocks designed to replace obsolete models, informed by sales data and studies of competitors? Or did the designers fight every discontinuation, and keep drawing and drawing and drawing, until there was a clock in every shape and size for every kind of human? Did Sony ever feel like a parent of twenty rowdy children?
Who made these? With their hands, in factories, screws and quality control and fifteen-minute breaks and plastic wrap? Were they treated with any respect at all?
Who loved their alarm clocks? Who grew up with theirs like I did, played with it like a toy when the batteries were low, then woke up to it on the best mornings, and the worst? Did they become family heirlooms, the stuff of legend? Did anyone ever hold one in their hands and cry?
What does it mean, to have something watch over my fragile body in the dark?
How many alarm clocks are there? Have they ended up in the trash by now, or is anyone respectful enough to recycle? Does anyone still fix them if there aren’t replacement parts? Does anyone remember the ones that are fading from the internet, a flash of a memory that leads to a Google rabbit hole and then…nothing?
Will it be the same to live in a world of iPhones? Where the beautiful forms we place on our counters are no longer alive with electricity? Will people still make practical art?
The ones being forgotten, the Sanyo and the Siemens and the one I’ve never even heard of, what if that one feature in an instruction booklet nearly lost to time…is the only thing that will make everything okay?
When this brings me joy, why does it bring me joy?
When this brings me misery, why does it bring me misery?
Has anyone ever asked these questions before?
And did they think they were the only one to ever wonder?
