Maine, example: Steven King works
Louisiana, example: Anne Rice novels
Massachusetts, example: Lovecraft... okay anywhere really in his works or any derived works.
New York, example: Fables comic series (some might know it as Wolf Among Us)
Illinois, example: Dresden Files

I have loved Lovecraft's novels for a very long time. It is only "recently" (a few years ago) than I have learnt that he was not a very nice fellow, to put it midly.
However, irrespective of his many faults, you can't deny that he had a way with words. He could, in a sentence or two, inspire true cosmic horror. Here are some of my favourite quotes:
"Great holes secretly are digged where earth's pores ought to suffice, and things have learnt to walk that ought to crawl." (The Festival)
"That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die." (The Nameless City)
"The moon is dark, and the gods dance in the night; there is terror in the sky, for upon the moon hath sunk an eclipse foretold in no books of men or of earth's gods." (The Other Gods)
"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of the infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far." (The Call of Cthulhu)
"The Old Ones were, the Old Ones are, and the Old Ones shall be. Not in the spaces we know, but between them. They walk serene and primal, undimensioned and to us unseen". (The Dunwich Horror)
"When the stars were right, They could plunge from world to world through the sky; but when the stars were wrong, They could not live. But although They no longer lived, They would never really die." (The Call of Cthulhu)
"I shall never sleep calmly again when I think of the horrors that lurk ceaselessly behind life in time and in space, and of those unhallowed blasphemies from elder stars which dream beneath the sea, known and favoured by a nightmare cult ready and eager to loose them upon the world whenever another earthquake shall heave their monstrous stone city again to the sun and air." (The Call of Cthulhu)
"It is absolutely necessary, for the peace and safety of mankind, that some of earth's dark, dead corners and unplumbed depths be left alone; lest sleeping abnormalities wake to resurgent life, and blasphemously surviving nightmares squirm and splash out of their black lairs to newer and wider conquests." (At the Mountains of Madness)
--
And it's not from Lovecraft, but here's an extract I really love from the The Laundry Files, a modern revisiting of the Mythos set in Britain.
It is 2314 hours BST on a Saturday night in London when the Duty Officer’s phone terminal displays the message. The Duty Officer tonight is, as usual, sitting alone in the Duty Office in one of the decontaminated wings on the second floor of the New Annex. First he checks the origin of the message and verifies the caller ID by hand from the official (printed, top secret) departmental phone book. This takes him approximately thirty seconds. Having authenticated the sender, he then looks up a second number. Then he picks up the telephone handset and calls it. [Ed. a chain of calls later…] In an aircraft hangar at Filton, not far from the Bristol Channel, a phone that should never ring begins to buzz in the ready room office, causing a man who wears a blue uniform to break into a cold sweat as he picks up the handset. He frowns intently as he notes the call in a logbook, pen clenched between white fingertips, not once looking at the sleek white shape that fills the hangar floor beyond his office window. If he did, he’d see a sudden burst of movement as the engineers on the night shift begin the ground prep checklists for a mission that should never fly.
(The Nightmare Stacks, Charles Stross)
I find the ideas of a phone that should never ring and a mission that should never fly to be truly terrifying.
There's something to be said about horrors which are so beyond anything we could conceive of, that humanity's best efforts and weapons might be completely powerless against them. When you factor in that these entities have no more consideration for us than what we have for bacteria… it just makes my head spin.

1, 2, 3, 10 reading asks
book i absolutely hate? i put down books i can see i won't like pretty quickly so i don't really have a rant locked and loaded for this one. i can go on and on about whole genres as a whole though because i can tell they're just not worth the paper they're printed on. the shelves and shelves of mediocre fifth-grade level fiction being marketed to grown ass adults. everything by joel osteen. [vomits] romance novels
book that first got me interested in reading? i've been reading ever since i can remember but the first 'real' book i can recall reading is the count of monte cristo by alexandre dumas, truly fantastic classic (i'm currently in a reread with the improvised book club right now actually!) i was also a redwall kid growing up of course, and also enjoyed the deptford histories by robin jarvis and gregor the overlander by suzanne collins. lots of anthropomorphic animals killing eachother in gruesome ways for some reason. i will forever be smug about reading suzanne collins before the hunger games got big though and tbh gregor was much better
did i actually read all the books required in school/did i start out that way? i was homeschooled so required reading was mostly public library summer reading programs, but yeah i've mostly always been like that. they couldn't stop me really
tell you about my top (any number i want) favorite books? opening a can of worms here, don't say i didn't warn you. it's no secret i'm a sci-fi guy so top of my list is always blindsight and echopraxia by peter watts. that shit changed me for real. wyrms by orson scott card is another one that, though fiction, contains a lot of very interesting thoughts. (standard 'card is a weird dude' disclaimer here.) i recently read jorge luis borges' short fiction, some very well done and intriguing concepts there. philip k. dick is a long time favorite of mine, the martian time-slip is particularly good as well as his dozens of short stories. and finally i will not shut up about gödel escher bach, i'm still wading through it but it's fantastically written, a lot of fun to read and i can already tell it's going to leave a mark

How does the whole thing work? How is Oda alive? Rimbaud?? Just genuinely curious I like the self aware bsd idea
Self-Aware! BSD. World Building. Gacha and how it affects others
Warning: English is my second language. Slight spoilers for BSD Manga, LN and Anime. Firs part is an explanation about BSD Mayoi Game, in case, you haven't played it.
_______
First, some basic facts about BSD Mayoi Inu Kaikitan game.
It's a gacha game. When you have enough Ability Stones (gacha currency) or Scout ticket(s) (from 1 to 10 free pulls), you do the Scout. Ether basic Rare Scout or Limited Scout.
Then you create a team with three cards (+1 guest card) and use marble to clean up orbs. The more orbs you collect, the more damage characters can do.
Cards, that you choose, will be shown as Chibi Sprites of characters, that will attack characters in order.
There are five types of cards in the game, four of them you can get in a scout.
R cards - simple sprite of a character
SR cards - a little more colourful character images. Can illustrate some moments from the anime (Dazai on Shrooms; Mori's Glare, that scared Lucy; Atsushi with newspapers, when he poses as newspaper boy etc)
SSR Cards (+ EX cards) - most colourful cards, with two sub skills and with animation, when you use active skill. Can either show moments from anime (Ranpo, when he was stuck in Poe's novel; Hirotsu in art museum; Chuuya and Dazai vs Lovecraft etc), Show Character's abilities (Matchless Poet, No Longer human....). Or show characters in different outfits and School AU (Student Fyodor in winter clothes, Dazai in yukata, Oda on a surfing board and so on).
EX cards are SSR cards, with two active skills. One will put Character in a special state. Second skill will either do damage, power up the attack... Example of EX card - Dragon Head Conflict Chuuya, where first skill put him in Corruption state, and second will do damage to enemies.
UR cards are former SSR cards, that can be Awakened after meeting certain conditions. Buffs cards.
With that out of the way.
How gacha affects BSD Characters
______
1. Let's start with alive characters, who are already had in-game cards and who still don't have cards.
People, who aren't affected by the Scout. Almost. They will feel a wave of power, when you get their cards for the first time and will get new outfits from cards, where they wear something different.
But, Dazai/Atsushi/Chuuya/Kyuusaku/Teruko/Gogol/Others still could use their abilities, even if you don't have their cards.
But, some of this character can affect themselves with the scout.
After characters get access to Game Files, they start messing with the Scout (Fukuzawa rises chance of getting his cards, Dazai hacked Chuuya's Birthday Scout, so you get everyone's cards, except Chuuya's). Soon, they start adding their own cards. They either gift it to you by Gift Box (Dazai and Oda playing poker from Dazai's Entry, Chuuya, gifting you his cards after Dazai's hack), or in Scouts (mentioned in My Favourite (Teruko's edition) and I am aware, that you are aware).
Still, some of the characters don't have an Ability Card, that explains their powers (Fitzgerald, Fyodor, Alkott, Ango, Tachihara and some more don't have such cards). And, of course, Season 3+ characters don't have any cards.
So, they can alter their abilities a little by adding an Ability Explanation card.
They can't alter their ability too much. Example: Gogol can't add "My overcoat can transform into wings" to "The Overcoat". But, he can make the distance that he can interact bigger, then in cannon. And Aya can't add an ability to herself.
2. So, about deceased characters.
There are cards of deceased characters in Bungou Stray Dogs Mayoi Inu Kaikitan game. There are Shibusawa's cards, Oda's cards and Gide's cards. The game won't take away Oda's and Gide's cards after you finish the Dark Era levels.
And their chibi sprites will be on the battle screen, attacking enemies. Like they are alive.
But, there is one catch. Dead Characters will be brought back to life only after you get SSR card from the scout. Doesn't matter, which one. It can be both limited and standard SSR.
Power of revival was discovered on the incident.
In this AU, it started with Oda. When you got his SSR card, Oda was brought back to life.
At first, everyone thought, that it was a miracle, and it can't happen again. But then you got Shibusawa's SSR and Gide's SSR. And both Shibusawa and Gide were brought back to life.
BSD Cast finally saw the pattern here. They wonder if they can do something with it.
It was a leap of faith. They decide to add the third season to the game. And new Scouts.
Because they started to mess with Scouts earlier, by adding new cards, they had some experience.
So, they finished with Fifteen Arc. And add Rimbaud's card. They used some official art and their own art skills. And add new 'card' in the scout.
They weren't sure, if they will succeed.
But, the moment you get Rimbaud SSR card, he was brought back to life. Well and unharmed.
When BSD Cast were adding STORM BRINGER to the game, they create SSR cards for the Flags. And that's why Flags are also alive.
Gide by himself created SSR cards of Oda's orphans.
Note! Karma was spared by Fyodor and his card was added as a normal SSR card.
So, to conclude, by adding new cards in game and pulling them, BSD Characters will bring deceaced characters back to life

The Laundry Roleplaying Game
The award-winning RPG of cosmic horror, tech-driven magic, and occult spycraft returns! Based on ‘The Laundry Files’ by Charles Stross.
Tumblr media
Welcome to the Laundry! You’re one of the unlucky few standing between humanity and unspeakable - often unpronounceable - supernatural, alien, and interdimensional threats.
You’re a spy. Well, you are now, at least. Previously, you were someone who learned things humanity was not meant to know. Namely, that magic is real, it exists in the higher realms of mathematics, and it has some really messed up devotees. And if you know that much, then you’re not left with much of a choice — you work for the Laundry now.
If you’re familiar with Charles Stross’ award-winning The Laundry Files series or the first edition of the award-winning Laundry RPG, you know all this already and can skip to looking at the books, the new award-winning game system, or just go ahead and pick a pledge level already. Just remember that everything here has won awards, ok? Lots of them.
If you are new to the Laundry, you are in for a treat – read on for the primer. You should also bear in mind the awards thing.
Tumblr media
There are things out there, in the weirder reaches of space-time, where reality is an optional extra. Horrible things, sometimes with actual tentacles. Al-Hazred glimpsed them, John Dee summoned them, HP Lovecraft wrote about them, and Alan Turing mapped the paths from our universe to theirs. It turns out that mathematics really is magic, or at least that aspects of it describe, enable and power magic. And computing power supercharges it.
The right calculation can call up entities from other, older universes, or invoke their powers. Invisibility? Easy! Binding lesser demons to your will? Trivial! Opening up the way for the Great Old Ones to come through and eat our brains? Unfortunately, much too easy.
That’s where the Laundry comes in. It’s a branch of the British secret service tasked with preventing alien gods from wiping out all life on Earth, with a policy focus on the United Kingdom. You work for the Laundry. The hours are long, the pay is bad, and the bureaucracy is stifling, but unfortunately, you know too much to really have a choice in the matter.
There are some upsides – you get to play with all sorts of magically enhanced tech, from necronom-iPhones loaded with cutting-edge occult apps to basilisk guns that [REDACTED]. Plus, you’ve got a job for life, and possibly beyond (talk to Residual Human Resources to find out more).
You may even get to save the world. Just make sure you get a receipt.

Tumblr media
Introducing the second edition of The Laundry Roleplaying Game — an exhilarating blend of covert action, investigation, and dark cosmic horror that thrusts you into the chaotic world of underfunded government employees battling to save the world from unspeakable threats.
Your daily grind includes myriad perilous tasks, from exorcising co-workers gone awry to thwarting ambitious computer students from triggering reality-bending catastrophes. Sneak into supercomputer servers, join SAS troops on dimension-hopping missions, halt outbreaks of blood-draining brain parasites, and prepare for the inevitable apocalypse of CASE NIGHTMARE GREEN.
Tumblr media
The C7d6 System
This second edition of The Laundry Roleplaying Game employs the acclaimed C7d6 system, renowned for its versatility, speed, and flexibility.
To perform an action, roll a number of six-sided dice equal to your Attribute score plus any Training you have in the relevant field. So if you have Mind 3 and two levels of Training in the Occult Skill, you have a dice pool of 5d6. Roll the dice, and if any of them exceed the difficulty of the Task, congratulations — you’ve succeeded!
The difficulty may vary, but fear not! You have a plethora of Talents at your disposal, each designed to bolster your chances of success and turn the tides in your favour.
Tumblr media
Small Scale to World Devouring
The game system is fast and accessible and ideal for when things get messy, the banishment rounds are flying, and creatures from another realm threaten to devour your office. The same rules apply whether you’re hacking into a computer, sneaking into an office block, or storming a building with a bunch of grizzled SAS troops.
Those rules work just as well when faced with mind-shattering horror and for higher-powered adventures when things start to get really strange in The Annihilation Score and beyond.
Tumblr media
Who Do You Play?
Within the Laundry, there are countless departments filled with hundreds of overworked and underpaid employees — and you’re one of them. You might be an accountant, IT support, a driver, or something weirder, like a counterpossession exorcist, a computational demonologist, or one of the really odd people who dedicate their life to research and development.
However, that’s just your day job. As part of your Active Duty, you’ll join other operatives and head out on a wide array of exciting (and deadly) missions.
Tumblr media
What Do You Do?
There is no ‘typical’ when it comes to Laundry missions. You could be sent to the heart of London, Wolverhampton, or Milton Keynes. You may even be sent overseas, but you’ll have to be careful not to ruffle any feathers — the Black Chamber and the Thirteenth Directorate are quick to halt clandestine Laundry operations. While they might have the same job as you, they handle things very differently, and some refuse to believe that the Cold War is over.
The world of the Laundry is under threat of incomprehensible cosmic horrors, and it’s up to you to save it.
