STWG Daily Prompt - "Static"
(lightning divider courtesy of enchanthings)
Shout out to SoaringOrnithopter for their birthday prompt that finally encouraged me to write a little Static Shock au featuring none other than Lucas Sinclair
cw: body horror
Listen, Lucas knew it was a bad idea.
Dustin, Mike, and Will were all adamant that he ignore Patrick's invitation and just stay home. But they didn't have to worry about Andy and Jason and the rest of the basketball team cornering him in the locker room to make sure he showed up. This was not the first time the team had forced him to do something in the name of "team bonding." It was, however, the first time they made him get involved in a fight.
Steve was going to be disappointed in him, if he lived long enough to see him after this. He had warned him that the team could be like this and that he should stand his ground if they started to take advantage of his goodwill.
Easier said than done.
It was too late, anyway. Lucas was already here and he was already regretting every decision that lead up to this moment. Because the fight the basketball team dragged him to? Eddie and his friends were the targets.
Lucas wanted to throw up.
When Jason threw the first punch, Lucas hid behind the first thing he could find, which was unfortunately a dumpster near the bar where everyone had decided to gather, some place called The Hideout. Lucas could hear the unmistakable sound of pained groaning and flying fists and he wished with his whole chest to be anywhere other than right there in that moment. Not even his palms pressed tightly over his ears could hide him from hearing Jeff yelling in pain and Gareth cussing out Andy and Brian begging them to stop.
And Eddie taunting Jason with every blow he took.
It was all too much.
And then there were sirens and shouting and Lucas knew it was time to run home as fast as his legs could carry him. Except, the voices that accompanied the sirens were not members of the Hawkins Police Department. Lucas peered above the dumpster and could see officers, but he had no idea where they had come from. Maybe state police?
Whoever they were, they had no compunction about throwing gas canisters toward the teenagers. It was the screaming that sent Lucas running. Patrick had gotten a face full of the gas and Lucas watched in horror as his skin began to bubble and melt. Patrick's eyes caught his and mouthed one word before his lips slid down his face.
Run.
Lucas ran and ran and did not stop until he had climbed through his own bedroom window and hid under his comforter until his hands stopped trembling and his heart stopped racing. He had no idea when he finally fell asleep, only knew that he could not stop seeing Patrick's face as he told him to run.
Lucas startled awake to someone pounding on his door.
"Wake up, Lucas! We're going to be late and I'm not about to get in trouble because you couldn't get your lazy butt out of bed!"
Lucas groaned, burying his face back into his pillow.
"Quit yelling, Erica! I'll be down in a minute!"
"You better," Erica huffed before stomping off, probably to complain to their mother.
Lucas took a deep breath before forcing himself to sit up, only for his pillow to remain attached to his face. He blinked and went to pull it off only to find that his sheets were sticking to his hands. By the time he managed to wrangle his bedding off of himself, he was out of breath and knew Erica was going to kill him for wasting more time.
And then his homework started flying toward him, his math worksheet nailing him right in the face where his pillow had previously been trying to smother him. Whatever was going on, Lucas had no time for it. With some dramatic flailing and a dexterity save that would make Will proud, Lucas was able to escape his room, dressed and ready for school, without anything else trying to cling to him.
By the time Lucas was dropped off at the front doors of Hawkins High, the weirdness of that morning had left his mind, his thoughts more focused on Patrick and the night before. There was a lot of whispering in the halls, only some of which Lucas could pick out.
A pit formed in his stomach.
He heard Jason's name being thrown around. And Eddie's. And Patrick's. Lucas was afraid someone was going to realize he had been there, that he had seen what had gone down outside The Hideout, and demand answers from him. That did not happen, though. He drifted through the hallways like the loser he had been in middle school, not important enough to pay attention to unless someone wanted to remind him why he was at the bottom of the social food chain.
He reached his locker in record time, stuffing his backpack inside and grabbing the few things he needed for his first class. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Dustin striding toward him like a man on a mission. Lucas was half tempted to make a run for it, avoid talking to Dustin so he could pretend last night had not happened for just a little bit longer, but he remained by his locker like a man awaiting execution.
"Lucas," Dustin greeted with a smile. "You have no idea how relieved I am to see you."
Lucas's confusion must have been apparent on his face because Dustin explained himself without further prompting.
"No one from the basketball team has come in today, just you. Eddie isn't here either, but he skips sometimes so I'm sure he's fine."
Lucas swallowed. He really hoped Eddie was fine. If anyone deserved to come out of last night fine, it was Eddie and his friends. The reminder of their presence at last night's scuffle made Lucas feel nauseous.
"Right, yeah."
"Anyway, I'm glad you saw sense and stood your ground. Steve's gonna be so proud of you. I may not get the whole jock thing, but I'm glad you're okay."
Lucas couldn't stand it anymore. Dustin was looking at him so earnestly and Lucas didn't deserve any of it.
"I didn't, Dustin," he murmured, shame coloring his voice. "I went last night. The guys waited for me and brought me with them. I didn't want to go, but I didn't know how to say no without getting labeled a traitor."
"But you're here and they're not," Dustin interrupted, unfazed. "Which means you left before anything happened, right?"
Lucas shook his head, anxiously glancing around to make sure no one was listening in on them.
"Dust, it was bad. Like, Code Red bad."
Dustin's eyes grew wide and he too started checking their surroundings. Without preamble, Dustin grabbed Lucas's arm and pulled him down the hallway until they were safely tucked away inside the drama room, hidden from prying eyes.
"Okay, spill."
And spill Lucas did. He told Dustin about the fight, how Jason started it, about hiding behind the dumpster, about the mysterious officers and the gas, and about Patrick telling him to run. By the time he was finished recounting the whole night, his hands were shaking again. Dustin was staring at him, his face pale.
"Holy shit."
And then, the icing on the cake, some paper streamers made a home on Lucas's elbow, just like his bedding and homework had stuck to him that morning. Dustin went to help pull it off and watched in shock as some random sheet music took its place.
"This was happening this morning, too," Lucas admitted with a strained voice. "I don't know why, but it's like I'm the embodiment of static cling."
"Maybe it's the gas from last night," Dustin joked. "Maybe it made you sticky."
Lucas wanted to snap at Dustin for making light of such a traumatizing night, but held his tongue at the obvious anxiety weighing on his friend's shoulders. Dustin wore his heart on his sleeve and it was clear how worried he was about Lucas and Eddie and the rest of their friends.
"Do you want to call Steve? He'd let us skip if we told him what happened."
Lucas kind of did want to call Steve, to play hooky for a day just to get the haunting images of last night out of his head, but he felt like that would be giving in somehow.
"Nah, I'm okay," he reassured Dustin. "I can wait until Steve picks us up after school."
Dustin didn't look convinced, but he also didn't argue, so Lucas counted that as a win. Of course, that was when the bell rang. Both of them scrambled off to their respective classes, determined to get through the rest of the day before dealing with the horrors of the real world.
That determination lasted until the entire student body was dragged into the gym for an impromptu assembly. The sinking feeling in Lucas's gut returned in full force. He found himself seeking out Dustin, finding his friend waving him over in the middle of the bleachers. Will and Mike were sitting next to him, but they seemed to be caught up in their own conversation. He eyed Dustin nervously and Dustin gave him a cautious smile in return.
So, he hadn't told Will and Mike.
That made Lucas breathe a little easier. It wasn't as though he wanted to keep secrets, just that he wanted to tell them on his own time and it was hard enough telling Dustin about the whole thing.
Principal Higgins cleared his throat, garnering the attention of the students enough that the low hum of chatter ceased entirely. It was eerily quiet and the sudden absence of sound filled Lucas with dread.
"I apologize for interrupting your morning, but I have some unfortunate news to share with all of you," Higgins announced, a gravity to his tone that filled the gym with palpable tension. "Last night a fight broke out that resulted in the deaths of Andy Thomas and Patrick McKinney. The other students involved are recovering from some serious injuries and likely will not return to the school for some time."
Lucas sat frozen in his seat. Patrick was dead. He was dead. Whatever that gas was killed him. He wished then that he had taken Dustin up on his offer to call Steve. He wasn't sure he could make it through the whole day carrying the image of Patrick dying in front of him.
"If any of you feel like you need to talk to someone, feel free to reach out to Ms. Kelley. My door is also open for anyone who needs it."
Lucas is pretty sure Higgins made some speech about not starting fights and saying no to peer pressure, but he was too focused on the fact that Eddie was hurt. Eddie got hurt and Lucas did nothing to help him. He hid behind a dumpster like a coward.
"Do you wanna cut class and see if Steve will drive us to check on Eddie?"
Lucas smiled weakly at Dustin before nodding. Mike and Will were still in their own world and Lucas was not ready to burst their bubble quite yet.
Steve made a couple comments about not wanting to incur the wrath of Lucas's mom, but one look at Lucas's face had him pulling the boy into a firm hug. It didn't fix everything, but it did make Lucas feel a whole hell of a lot better. When Dustin told Steve they wanted to check on Eddie, Steve only hesitated for a moment before sighing and giving in.
The drive to Eddie's was quiet. Lucas was desperate to check on him, to apologize for both being there last night and not doing anything to stop it from happening. He was afraid of how Eddie was going to react, especially since Eddie had not taken too well to Lucas joining the basketball team in the first place. After last night, Lucas would be surprised if there even was a basketball team anymore, at least for the current season.
By the time they pulled up in front of Eddie's trailer, Lucas was a bundle of nerves, torn between wanting to make sure his friend was alright and dreading seeing the aftermath of the night prior. Dustin was clearly bursting at the seams, ready to check on Eddie.
"Let's not bombard him, okay," Steve instructed, his voice gentle and firm. "You guys said he was hurt and I know you wanna check to make sure he's doing okay, but if he tells us to scram then we're out of here. Capisce?"
Dustin nodded vigorously, whereas Lucas's acknowledgement was more subdued. The three of boys hopped out of the Beemer and walked up the steps to Eddie's front door. Dustin knocked loudly, not dissimilar from Erica's pounding from that morning. Lucas almost told him to be more gentle, but then the door swung open and the trio came face-to-face with an exhausted looking Eddie Munson. There were bruises on his face and arms, but he otherwise appeared unharmed.
"You're okay!" Dustin's shout was loud enough to wake the dead, making both Lucas and Steve rub their ears at the sudden sound.
"Henderson? The hell are you doing here?" Eddie seemed confused and looked from Dustin to Lucas to Steve, his eyes lingering on Lucas longer than anyone else.
"We came to check on you, duh," Dustin exclaimed like an exasperated mother. "You weren't in school and we had an assembly about the fight and Lucas said-"
"Sinclair," Eddie drawled, seemingly uncaring that he interrupted Dustin's explanation. "Were you there last night? I didn't see you, but I did see your buddies and they gleefully gave me and the boys some bruises. Where were you?"
"Hiding," Lucas admitted, his voice barely a whisper. "I didn't wanna be there at all and Jason made me come, said I'd be hurting Patrick by ignoring his invitation to join in. I didn't know it was going to be a fight. I didn't know that was going to happen. I didn't know. I'm sorry."
Eddie hummed, his eyes bored holes through Lucas like he was trying to pick apart his very soul. Whatever he saw must have satisfied him because the next thing Lucas knew, Eddie was pulling him into a tight hug much like the one Steve had given him.
"It's okay, Lucas," Eddie murmured. "I'm not mad at you. You did good. Hiding probably kept you safe."
"It didn't though," Lucas whined. "I watched Patrick die. He melted right in front of me."
Eddie held him tighter and pulled him inside the trailer. Lucas felt him jerk his head and figured that he was telling Steve and Dustin to follow him inside. The moment the door closed behind them, Eddie pulled Lucas away from the safety of his arms and held his shoulders in a firm grip.
"Lucas, listen to me," Eddie said, his voice leaving no room for argument. "Hiding away from that gas was the best thing you could have done, do you hear me?"
Lucas nodded, but was unsure. There was a manic look in Eddie's eyes, like he was holding back something. Before he could ask any questions, he felt a shock of static electricity spark between his shoulders and Eddie's hands, prompting Eddie to let go of him. Lucas watched as Eddie studied his own hands with curiosity before looking back at Lucas, concern written all over his face.
"I don't think hiding saved me from the gas," Lucas whispered, a dawning horror settling like a rock in his stomach. "I think it did something to me."

We as society do not speak on Max and Eleven enough. Their friendship is so beautiful and I just know however the way Season 5 deals with Max it’ll be heartbreaking. I love how much these girls have grown and the way that they so positively affected each other drives me mad.
The fact that when faced with death in a scenario where only good memories can save you, both of them thought of each other is so 😭💞💗 (images courtesy of @love-byers) EDIT: SOMETHING I JUST REALIZED IS THAT THEIR MEMORIES OVERLAP IN ONE SPECIFIC MOMENT: THE HIGH FIVE ON THE BUS. MAX’S MEMORY IS OFFERING THE HIGH FIVE AND ELEVEN’S IS ACCEPTING THE HIGH FIVE I’M GOING INSANE.
They meant so much to each other and I really wish that Eleven’s Season 5 supernatural plot is focused with Lucas and Erica as she tries to save the one person who gave her what she wanted all along: normalcy, belonging and autonomy.
I really hope they can say one final goodbye if Max is to die, their friendship means so much to me and they deserved to conquer the world together.

And that's the exact same reason Mike told El she was pretty when she dressed feminine? Or he kissed her in the Snowball when he was feminine? Or told her he loved her new style? Make it make sense 😂
Actually, I'm even glad that I was asked such a question, because I wanted to continue my thought from the last post. Now I will tell you why I think that Mike is not attracted to girls and that his feelings for El cannot be considered romantic.
Important: you can consider Mike whoever you want, bisexual, asexual, gay, even straight. but I think that he is gay, because there is a huge amount of evidence for this, and if his feelings for Will are confirmed, then it will be much more logical to say that he is gay.
Let's start with the first season, where the arc of the romantic relationship between Mike and El begins:
I think it's obvious that El looks like a boy at that point, it's mentioned several times in the series, perhaps this was the reason why it was easier for Mike to treat her kinder than Dustin and Lucas did. Another reason for this occasional kindness on Mike's part is that El helped Mike find Will. Mike's main goal, after all, was to find Will, and that's why he needed El. He didn't treat her like a cute girl he fell in love with at first sight, he treated her exactly as a weapon or their key in finding Will (as rude and unfair as it may sound to El, but nevertheless, these are Mike's words)

Why Mike kissed El, or asked her to dance, or called her pretty, is hard to understand unless you've been in his situation. And by situation, I mean social pressure and expectations, and how they don't match your internal identity.
Let me explain: when you're a little boy who doesn't yet fully understand that he's gay, who lives in a small conservative town in the 80s, in a nuclear family with a father who makes homophobic jokes at your expense, you're going to try to be more normal. You're going to model your parents' relationship, you're going to model your friends who are openly attracted to the opposite sex, you're going to model your behavior on stereotypically masculine men on TV, etc. And you're going to end up telling yourself that you HAVE to like girls, because otherwise you're "wrong."
If it weren't for Lucas, who with his childish stereotypical thinking noticed Mike's affection for El, or if it weren't for Nancy, who for the first time saw her brother with a girl, asked if he liked her, then Mike would not have decided on a romantic relationship with El. When Lucas comically depicts Mike kneeling in front of El to show him that Mike is supposedly in love with El, Mike at first does not even understand what Lucas means. The final point in the question "Was Mike in love with El in the first season" is put by the words of Finn Wolfhard, when asked about Mileven relationship, he said that at the time of their meeting, Mike did not even have a thought about love in his head.
Only when he realized that he had a good chance to start a relationship with the first girl he met who wasn't disgusted by him (Lucas' words btw) did he decide to take things into his own hands and start showing her the signs of attention that he could see in the movies, for example. And a kiss, an invitation to the ball, or little compliments were these signs of attention, albeit very, very childishly awkward.
Also, don't forget that words and their hidden symbolism play a big role in interpreting the ideas of this show (crazy, stupid, bullshit, etc., they all matter). Let's remember when else have we heard the word "pretty"? I can think of two instances: In Season 1, El looks at a picture of Nancy and calls her pretty, and in Season 3, El tells Billy that she saw his mother in visions and that she was really pretty. In both cases, there is no romantic subtext, especially the first moment, because it is a direct foreshadowing/parallel to Mike's words. When El calls Nancy pretty, Mike agrees. Reluctantly, but he still agrees. The fact that he may find Nancy and El pretty does not confirm his attraction to girls, because if finding El pretty = being in love with her, then Mike is also in love with his sister, which is obviously not true. Besides the parallel between El and Mike's sister, I want to say that finding someone of the opposite sex beautiful when you're gay is a completely normal experience. Like, I'm a lesbian myself and I may find some guys good looking, but that still doesn't mean I'm romantically interested in them, romantic attraction is different.

Mike initiates the kiss in season 1 and 2, and the reason for this is because of the pressures of heteronormativity, he takes on the role of the man in the heteronormative relationship that everyone expects of him. And then later, during the kissing scenes in season 3, El is the one who initiates the kisses. El leans in while Mike basically stands there like a statue. Mike takes her hands off of him. During the second kissing scene in season 3, El is the one who holds Mike's face in her hands while Mike literally just sits there. Even though he is still affectionate with El as time goes on + as she develops her own identity + comes across as more stereotypically feminine, we see him become more and more uncomfortable with it, especially during the last kissing scene in season 3.
Mike and El's final kiss in season 3, or to be more precise, Mike's reaction to that kiss, is a whole other conversation, because I think that was his final stage of realizing his lack of attraction to girls. He may not have realized yet that he liked boys, but he did begin to understand that he wasn't interested in El or girls in general. I won't dwell on that, I'll just say that if Mike really liked girls, that embarrassing scene wouldn't make sense. If he didn't realize then that he didn't like girls, then what? I don't think he realized that he just didn't like El. That would be weird, because given his previous attention to her, it's unclear what could have changed in El so much that Mike "fell out of love" with her in one season.
Anon also mentioned that Mike liked El's new style, but I don't even see the point in analyzing that, because it's just a parallel to Hopper, who literally said the same thing. Another parallel between Mike and El's parental figure, nothing romantic.

Now I want to tell you why I think Mike isn't attracted to girls, but let's move El aside a little to look at Mike outside of their relationship.
Mike is the only one from the entire party, or even from the entire series, who does not show interest in the opposite sex, with the exception of his partner. Dustin is dating Suzie, but he still thinks Phoebe Cates is hot. Lucas is dating Max, but before that, he also competed with Dustin for Princess Daphne in slot machines, and also called Max "perfect in her own special way." Max is dating Lucas, but he likes to look at boys in magazines and finds Ralph Macchio attractive. El, apparently, enjoys the idea of Max dreaming about other guys, and El also imagined herself in the heroine's place when she watched Hopper's TV. If we consider other, slightly more adult characters: Steve actively shows interest in other girls, Nancy has a poster of Tom Cruise in her room, and Robin, the first confirmed LGBT character in the series, also showed interest in Tammy Thompson, Phoebe Cates and Vickie.
Mike, on the other hand, has never shown any interest in girls other than El. Ever. When Max shows up at school, Mike is the only one who is extremely negative towards her and tries hard to keep her out of the team, acting in complete opposition to the rest of the party. His negative attitude towards Max not only helped create an interesting dynamic between them and make El jealous, but it was also an interesting way to differentiate Mike from the other boys based on his attitude towards girls. I've heard people justify his behavior by saying that he misses El and doesn't want Max to take her place, but that sounds crazy because how could Max take her place? Does Mike really think that if Max takes El's place, he'll have to date her and forget about El? That doesn't make any sense. The only way Mike's behavior makes sense is if he was jealous of his friends' (and especially Will's) attention to Max and didn't want Dustin and Lucas to have a love interest while Mike has no one to project his feelings onto.
When Dustin and Lucas compete for Princess Daphne in a game, Mike shows no interest in it. When Dustin says his girlfriend is hotter than Phoebe Cates, Mike makes his signature face. He doesn't respond to it, while Lucas expresses his doubts that Susie couldn't possibly be hotter than Phoebe Cates. When Ted calls El a "sweetie pie," Mike makes that face again, even though there was no reason to do so.

Oh, and let's not forget about those shots, which could very well be a complete accident, but could also be brilliantly planned symbolism:

Even though the main characters are 14 years old in season 3, in the midst of their teenage years and growing up, Mike still has no interest in girls other than El, both because he is fixated on her and because he has no attraction. The scene in the mall where Mike, Will, and Lucas are looking for a gift for El has always caught my attention. Especially that moment when the boys stumble upon a lingerie store and, as befits normal teenagers, get scared and run away. I find this scene interesting because of what the boys are looking at: based on the sequence of shots, it is clear that Lucas is looking at women's underwear, Will is looking at the bottom of the underwear, which can also be identified as men's, and Mike is looking at stockings, which have no clear gender.

This is an interesting decision, because if Mike was attracted to girls, there would be no point in putting a shot with gender-neutral underwear after it. While this may sound like an argument against my point, I'm mainly just bringing this up to include this screenshot of a post from the official Stranger Things Twitter account:
And finally, let's get back to the take on the Tom Cruise poster in Nancy's room.
Did you know that posters can say a lot about the person whose room they're in? In the show, we also saw Billy's room, who is obviously attracted to women, which is why he has posters of women in bikinis. We also see Steve's room, who is also attracted to women, which is why he also has posters of women in bikinis. And what do we see in Mike's room? Yeah, I think you know what I'm talking about... A half-naked muscular dragon being fought by a little wizard? Oh, okay.. A poster for the 1982 movie "Conan the Barbarian"?!? With another half-naked muscular man, I guess... Okay, but there's also a woman in the corner of that poster, right? Yeah, I hate to spoil the fun for you guys, but this is definitely not the kind of movie a man who likes women would watch. "Conan the Barbarian" is FULL of misogyny, toxic masculinity and... half-naked muscular men, yes.

In general, I think this topic can be discussed for a long time, but I will probably stop here and I will be glad if you share your thoughts if you do not agree. I will be grateful if someone explains to me why he thinks that Mike is bi or even hetero, since I am not used to looking at this character from this point of view

And when Max wakes up and finally gets to talk to Lucas, and she aims for sarcastic when she asks, “So you’ve been watching me sleep?” but it’s too watery to be anything but affectionate. And Lucas says all choked up, “Yeah—Yeah, I’ve been waiting for you to wake up. Felt like a total stalker.” Then what?

Lucas Sinclair slowly losing faith in milkvan is my favorite thing.
Like, he was the first one to tell Mike that he likes El, and basically prompted their first kiss by accident. Then he gives mike advice about her all throughout S3, thinking that mike is clueless but in love.
But after season 4, he notices some weird things.
"That's not how love should feel, Mike. You shouldn't have to lie, or destroy yourself."
"She's not a superhero, she's your girlfriend."
"If you really love her, why was everything you said a lie?"
"Mike. It's okay. Maybe she isn't the one."

hey, bromeo <3
question ive been pondering recently:
how good do you think each member of the party is at bowling?
ooxxooXoXXx
Hey there :)
Oh, bowling! I actually have some really fond memories bowling, so this is a fun set of headcanons to pursue even though I’m not good at bowling.
First up in my mind is Max. MadMax with her silent victories definitely enjoys bowling on the down-low and always has a good match with Lucas when they go out on dates at the bowling alley. I think she’d put a really good spin in her throws.
I think that Dustin’s second best. No one quite sees it coming, not even himself. But he has the best method of keeping his throw consistent and internally calculating the best time to let go of the ball. He gloats a lot about it once he realizes he’s good at bowling, too, much to…
Lucas’s annoyance. I think Lucas is next best; he’s got the athleticism and natural instinct with just a tad less luck than Dustin. But once you give him a sip of New Coke between victories, he’s unstoppable.
Will I think is next. He’s got pretty good aim and power but doesn’t realize it. I also imagine that he isn’t too fond of the sport at first, but once he gets in the groove, he can get a pretty good score.
Next is El. I actually think that bowling would be a really good sport for her and she could be on a high school team maybe, but it takes her a while to control her ball speed. I’m kinda projecting this one, but I think she’d have great aim but not enough power.
And finally, last but not least, Mike. Mike is a gutter magnet. I feel like he’d have to tame some major spins on his throws and end up tossing the ball more than bowling it. His fingers are also definitely getting caught in the holes like 50% of the time he bowls.
#asks my beloved <3#I always feel so bad when I’m mean to Mike#but I’m doing it out of love I swear#the party#the party headcanons#max mayfield#dustin henderson#lucas sinclair#will byers#el hopper#mike wheeler#oh headcanons I do adore
