One of the tropes I most hate is when a story ends and all the fantastical stuff goes away. It sort of validates the idea that the story was just meaningless escapism from Real Life and now that the characters have grown up it's time to live the prescribed normative experiences. It's this idea that the fun stuff was just childhood fancy, that the story you just got invested in was only a respite.

Pale did not do this, nor should it have, even though it really could have. The world of Practice is horrifying and grim and slimy, and the main characters would have had ever right to throw up their hands and wish they could return to a normal life.

But they don't. Because Verona found her niche, outside of the norms and constraints of Innocent culture and society, and she was right to do so. Because Avery found friends, a whole *realm* of potential new friends, and endless opportunities to meet them, and a great experience she can share with a life partner. Lucy had the most reason to want a normal life again (and I think it was on purpose that she got back into more Innocent stuff), the world of Practice held even more battles for her, but she also found allies, she found tools that she could use, she found a whole new context to think about, and she found new ways to grow. Their coming of age was not just solving the problem in front of them so that they wouldn't have to deal with it anymore, it was growing up in the larger context they were made aware of and, despite the trials, being stronger and better off for it.

And as I started writing this, I realized that this was a fucking metaphor for getting into fandom as a kid.

Got realy into this webserial when everyone told me it was about to end and here we are 10 arc later.

I was a bit sad Lucy never got to do weird cosmic shit like Avery with the Promenade or Verona doing the Founding, but Lucy did get the Swordmoot, and was executioner of the old Alabaster.

And in light of the epilogues, showing her going to university and having a more normal life, I kind of like that. Rather than reaching at cosmic mysteries, she instituted reform in a very concrete way. Her having a life more similar to Innocents is just as much a reflection of her accomplishments as Avery running Paths with her girlfriend and familiar, and Verona running a magical bookstore and collaborating on projects as a Sorceress.

This latest Pale chapter (epilogue, Pale is done by the end of October at the latest don't quote me) completely overwrote my image of at least one Bad End Kenneteer.

Now instead of a permanent wolf mask Evil Avery now wears sunglasses, because she joined Wonderkand.

Arguably still successful, but are they happy?

The Lonely Witch is actually for dramatic effect and a bit of a cry for help. Verona plays it off as a joke and aesthetic. Even if her weekly social calls with Avery or Lucy have become more monthly or bi-monthly now, and she hasn't left her demesne outside of research purposes for over a month now...

The Warrior, sorry, Lucy, is just so busy with governing her space of Canada nowadays, and is constantly keeping up with meetings with nearby polities and making sure they don't do anything *wrong*, keeping track of her ambassadors and attaches she keeps in each council is annoying, but worth it, she doesn't trust them of course. Especially when she has to expend effort to put them back in line. That's not even getting into the Lords jockeying under her, she had to fill the empty spaces and keep them in check too... all for the greater good of course, don't want another Charles or Musser around, right?

I don't know enough to feel confident writing about the Head of Relations, someone else can do it. But she's very powerful and sad like the other two I can assure you. She also has a wife, it is a strained relationship.
