I think Mario only greeted Luigi with a handshake after being rescued in Luigi's mansion 2 because at that point he had no clue what was going on.
In Luigi's Mansion 1 and 3 he knew without a shadow of a doubt that Luigi was in danger, hence the warmer greeting... be it on-screen like in LM 3, or merely implied in sound bites during the credits of LM 1.
Even though in Luigi's Mansion 2 the nature of Mario's capture is left nebulous, we can safely assume he didn't know Luigi was involved at all. And, if we know one thing about Mario, it's that he's not one to panic over his own safety compared to the safety of others.
So when he's freed from the painting he's initially just proud of his brother for getting him out.
But after Luigi helps restore the Dark Moon, Mario begins to better understand the gravity of what all is going on, returning to Luigi's side to wrap an affectionate arm around him.
And when that is interrupted by the freed– once more friendly– ghosts, Mario eventually breaks away from the celebrating specters to approach Luigi a third time to reemphasize how proud he is.
It feels to me like the behavior of a guy who only realized what was happening after the heat of the moment.

Boo CHONK Chart
This took me more time than it should have because I wanted the Boo's to look as close to in game as I could get them, but I am very proud of it.
I like to think E.Gadd keeps this poster in his lab somewhere
I also Made some blank sheets for those who may also want to make their own Boo Chonk sheet, or any other Chonk sheet they wish

Loved reliving this experience 💚✨
Guess what game I finished a couple of nights ago 😌
I really had so much fun with this game! I missed playing as my beloved boy Luigi and going ghost-hunting with him 🥹 And this pic with Polterpup is just so peaceful 🤍💚
Some spoilers under the cut! ⚠
In all honesty though, I probably would've finished this game earlier if it weren't for that mission in which all the ghosts invade the Treacherous Mansion and you have to go running from one room to the next to catch them all before the dimension collapses... You know, I LOVE that games increase their difficulty as they progress, but I do NOT like missions against the clock 😅 That one took me a few attempts to complete...
But then, the last Possessor ghost was even easy 😶 It only took me about 4 minutes to defeat all those armors, including the giant one, which is, btw, the time I spent fighting against the Possessor ghost from the Secret Mine. The one I took FOREVER to defeat in the 3DS version. I'm... honestly surprised that I found both ghosts so easy 😅
King Boo, though, was very hard, but I don't even know how, I managed to defeat him on the first try! It was a cool fight indeed, though also a bit stressing, especially the part where he chases after you while you have to dodge lots of furniture and obstacles 😆 (Yes, I tend to stress myself with videogames because I live them to the fullest 😂)
I had to share these pics simply because I love them, especially the first one. Oh, the angst... The yearn in Luigi's gestures to save his brother... 🥺
And then... 🥹
The brothers ever 🥹❤️💚
Luigi adopting Polterpup is the cutest thing EVER, and all the ghosts becoming friends with him and Mario and the Toads is just so sweet! I truly LOVE the ending of this game 🥹
Also, I didn't remember the credits at all, and these pics really surprised me! 👇
THIS IS WAY TOO CUTE??? HELLO????? 😭😭😭😭😭
I totally wasn't expecting that last one... and I totally did NOT squeal like a silly as soon as I saw it, of course not, what are you talking about 🥹🥹🥹
Now I only have one doubt... I wanna change my profile pic, but I can't choose between the first one, with Luigi and Polterpup relaxing and napping together, or the last one with the bros high-fiving... I love them both and I can't choose. HELP 😆
Also, as for the games I'm currently playing, it's Paper Mario 64 on NSO and Super Mario Galaxy on Super Mario 3D All Stars! I'm really enjoying both so far! 🥰

I've seen complaints that one of the more annoying things about Luigi's mansion 2 is how often E. Gadd calls, but I personally love it? Like, a lot.
E. Gadd is so bad at relating and making emotional connections, but darn it all he really cares about his friend, and the most valuable things he can offer besides his inventions are instruction, advice, and a quick escape if things go wrong, so of course he's going to be checking in every two minutes.
