Panfandom Hanukkah Bingo
WHAT: A fanworks bingo celebrating Jewish (and Jew-ish) characters across any and all fandoms. Write fanfiction and/or create graphics (moodboards, edits, vids, whatever you like) to fill prompts on this overall bingo card. During the 8 nights of Hanukkah, submit your fills to the AO3 collection and/or post them on Tumblr to be reblogged and added to the Bingo Masterpost.
WHY: Jewish characters and Jewish fans are often overlooked or erased during the Winter Holiday Season in favor of “Secret Santa” exchanges, Christmas-themed fics, and the idea that ~Hanukkah is Jewish Christmas~ (which spoiler for all fics in this bingo: it’s not). This panfandom Bingo challenge is to celebrate Hanukkah on its own terms and give Jewish characters and fans a place to breathe. :)

April: *Looking fondly at Jo*
Jo: What’s up?
April: If there was some type of platonic marriage for friends, I would have proposed to you by now.
Jo: Dude...

Lumberjanes by N.D. Stevenson, Grace Ellis, Shannon Watters and Brooklyn Allen
goodreads
Tumblr media
At Miss Qiunzilla Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet's camp for hard-core lady-types, things are not what they seem. Three-eyed foxes. Secret caves. Anagrams. Luckily, Jo, April, Mal, Molly, and Ripley are five rad, butt-kicking best pals determined to have an awesome summer together... And they're not gonna let a magical quest or an array of supernatural critters get in their way! The mystery keeps getting bigger, and it all begins here.
Mod opinion: I've read Volume 1 so far and liked it, but I'm hoping to finish the series at some point.

Was thinking about the kiddads, Dipper and Mabel, and the Lumberjanes having like, a support group for 11-14 year-olds who dealt with weird mystical shit, but my imagining got side tracked by the weird meta conversations they would have about swearing.
Nick: So our fucking grandparents - Dipper: Wait...what did you just say? Jo: Yeah, what the junk was that? Terry Jr.: Sorry, no wait, what did you just say? Jo: What the junk? Nick: Yeah - Do you not have swears? Dipper: Do you not have Standards and Practices? Nick: Are you fucking kidding me? Hell no! Terry Jr.: Seriously though? "What the junk"? April: I'm not sure, we also use the names of famous women as interjections. I feel like this started out a way to make us able to reach younger audiences, but it just turned into a fun bit? Terry Jr.: Oh yeah, no. Our show just has a warning at the start of every episode that it's for grown ups. Grant: So should we be worried about the twins, Ripley, and Mable creating something very explosive but also very glittery?

Things Get Better?: LGBTQ Representation in Animation in 2022 [Part 4]
Continued from part 3
youtube
While some shows with LGBTQ characters, have ended (Kid Cosmic and Amphibia), were cancelled (Q-Force), or won't be renewed (Dead End, gen:LOCK, and High Guardian Spice), indie animation has continued to shine. Some argued that people shouldn't look to Disney for queer representation in animation, that there may be a decline of superhero shows where many queer characters are, and noted a limited number of out TV stars out there. Although by midway through the year LGBTQ representation looked grim, due to what I've mentioned earlier, indie animations made clear that queerness is normal, just as it should be in real life.
Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs and Wayback Machine. This was the nineteenth article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on January 16, 2023.
None of these indie animations would even be recognized by GLAAD, which recently promoted the animated series Chicago Party Aunt, and animated films, [5] and with their nominees for the GLAAD Media Award, blogposts, and annual reports, nor by queer feminist magazines like Autostraddle, a queer feminist magazine. Instead, they have been recognized by fans and supporters. This includes those such as Helluva Boss, Ollie & Scoops, Eddsworld, a new season of Hazbin Hotel in development, along with others in development like The Descendants, Wild Card, Far Fetched, and Indigo, to name a few.
In the year ahead, there are bound to be more LGBTQ series, with the premiere of the yuri series The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady in January, the second season of D4DJ in January, the new series Yuri Is My Job! in April, and the new season of Birdie Wing, also in April. Another yuri series, I'm in Love with the Villainess is also set to air this year, while the sci-fi yuri manga, Hoshikuzu Telepath, is in development. This is coupled with continued release of yuri manga, visual novels, and the planned release of Love Live! anime spinoffs Nijiyon Animation and Genjitsu no Yohane: Sunshine in the Mirror. Both will likely have yuri subtext in line with other Love Live! anime series, which only have women as characters. There are indications that anime adaptations of Hikikomari Kyuuketsuki no Monmon aka The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess, Whisper Me A Love Song, Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games, and Vampeerz may be premiering this year.
Despite these positives, I worry that LGBTQ representation in animation, this year, may wane, in line with declining representation in film. For Western animation, what shows can fill the void left by The Owl House, Amphibia, Kid Cosmic, Dead End, gen:LOCK, High Guardian Spice, or even Q-Force? Its hard to know if existing series can fill that gap. In anime, there is more possibilities, due to the aforementioned yuri series, and any possible yaoi (boy's love) series.
However, there is some hope for representation in Western animation. The next season of The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder is coming in February, along with Ark: The Animated Series which features a lesbian protagonist, the animated series Princess Power and Velma in January, and the Nimona animated film in the summer. New seasons of Witch from Mercury, Arcane, Star Trek: Lower Decks, The Great North, Invincible, The Ghost and Molly McGee, and Disenchantment may premiere. The pilot episode of S.A.L.E.M.: The Secret Archive of Legends, Enchantments, and Monsters or the film which precedes the Lumberjanes series might air.
There might be new information about an animated series set after The Legend of Korra, which had two bisexual protagonists (Asami and Korra), which will focus on an unnamed earthbender, a film centered around Korra said to be released in 2026. There might be LGBTQ characters in Kiff, Hailey's On It!, and Iwájú, which are scheduled to begin airing this year, or those in future series such as Primos, Moana, Tiana, and Iyanu: Child of Wonder.
Animation may continue to be in a bit of a rough patch and more may flock to indie animation in hopes of finding an alternative to the studio system. That is what can be easily predicted for this year.

[5]  Strange World featured a gay couple: Ethan Clade and Diazo. In 2022, there were been bisexual and lesbian characters in Catwoman (specifically Catwoman and Batwoman), queer characters in Turning Red (Priya Mangal), a lesbian woman in Lightyear (Alisha Hawthorne), along with lesbian women in DC League of Super-Pets (Nancy), and Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! (Velma Dinkley and Coco Diablo).

One time Ripley got bored and ate an entire bottle of edible glitter

Folks, Nimona is getting a single film. Just a film. Not a show. Not a series. A film. A movie. And only one of them. It'd be cool if it was getting more than that, but it's not. It has a runtime of just under 2 hours.
The Netflix YouTube teaser page even says this in the summary: from the Netflix Film "Nimona"
In the article Netflix released the day of the teaser, they have these:
"In the animated film that shares her name, the young changeling"
"share a first teaser trailer for our film"
"even more so in the movie now"
"[Nimona] reached out from the movie"
"You can catch up with Nimona when the movie hits Netflix on June 30."
In the extra footage reel on the New on Netflix video, there's a box of text on the top left corner of the Nimona footage that says "N [for Netflix] Film Nimona June 30".
Tumblr media
For all the other general confusion I'm seeing around, I made a Tumblr post summarizing most of the stuff with the film and its history. Shorter summary of some common confusion I'm seeing:
Nimona is a webcomic (2012-2014) by Nate Diana Stevenson/ND Stevenson (he/him) that was published as a single graphic novel in 2015. While the comic was ongoing, Nate co-wrote Lumberjanes. The Nimona adaptation rights were purchased by Fox in 2015, and it was in production to become a film under Blue Sky Studios, using the Paperman (2012) art style (one of the directors, Patrick Osbourne, was animation supervisor for Paperman, and directed Feast the short film (2015), which used the same style). Disney purchased 20th Century Animation in 2019 (including Blue Sky), and work was ongoing. Disney shuttered Blue Sky and cancelled the still in production film in February 2021. The crew went searching for a new home for the film and it was picked up by Annapurna as producer, DNEG as the animation studio (using Blue Sky materials), and Netflix as distributor (they just seem to be handling distribution and marketing, not actually working on the film), which they officially announced in April 2022, for a planned 2023 release. The film also seems to have been completed sometime around February 2023. The PG-rated film premiered at the Annecy Animation International Film Festival on June 14th, 2023, and will release in select theaters on June 23rd, and be on Netflix for streaming on June 30th, 2023. There have been preview events for crew, press, and certain small organizations going back to February 2023, and at least a few people have gotten advance review copies.
Nate was also the showrunner for She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (November 13, 2018-May 15, 2020), the reboot of She-Ra: Princess of Power (1985). Again, Nimona's adaptation rights were bought by Fox in 2015, and it was being made by Blue Sky Studios. She-Ra (2018) began production in April 2016 under DreamWorks Animation and Mattel (owner of the IP), and was distributed by Netflix. 20th Century [Fox] Animation was bought by Disney in 2019. She-Ra (2018) concluded in May 2020. Nimona was cancelled by Disney in February 2021. Nimona was officially revived in April 2022, under Annapurna Animation (production), to be made/completed by DNEG (animation) and distributed by Netflix. Netflix wasn't involved on Nimona until after it was in production for around six years, around a year, minimum, after She-Ra (their last project with Nate) ended. Every other company is different and it'd be weird for them to say "you only get this if this is successful" when that makes zero sense on timing.
Lumberjanes is being adapted into an animated series on HBO Max, with Nate as executive producer. We haven't really heard anything more about it since 2020.
You can still buy and read the Nimona graphic novel in physical and ebook form, as well as the full-cast English audiobook (also available in the link). The graphic novel has been translated into 16 languages! The only thing that changed for publication was that Nate redid some of the very early pages to improve the art/panelling and make it more in line with later pages and acceptable for physical publication. That's all!

im so glad you asked
Tumblr media
diane and molly are from sheneznaya and when molly ran away diane was asked to find her but oops! followed her and became "justy besties" instead. molly met bubbles a little after her escape after he tried to steal her vision (almost let him) and they hung out together trying to go through genshin russia. diane uses her dillousion a Whole Lot but due to some non human blood it doesnt affect her nearly as much as it should. molly got her vision a little before running away from home. diane doesnt remember when she got hers.
jo is a student in sumeru and WAS trying very hard to ignore all the weird shit happening but was rightfully skeptical of the akasha terminals and is maybe on the run from the college government. her dads think she is just living her best life. jo, crucially, is still able to dream. april cannnot. april is her girl bestie who got too upset about how the school does shit so she became a forest watcher and she is the BEST mind you. jp got her vision when she was very little, before april got hers, she doesnt remember the exact circumstances--its just been too long. april's vision used to be her moms but she woke it back up after a while, they are both pyro users.
emily is also a forest ranger/watcher :) she got her vision following a weird robotic creature into the forest alone and into a withering zone and almost DIED but thats okay because she got her vision after she made it out alive :). barney is from liyue but joined the forest rangers after traveling to sumeru because its just more their style. met marigold as a baby tiger and when she grew up everyone was horrified except for barney :)
hes and mackenzie are traveling adventurers from liyue harbor who like to help out people in anyway they can. heard rumors of a fatui harbinger and a rogue cryo user out in the wild and instead found worlds angriest deer and a girl holding a weasel by the armpits. hes got her vision when traveling with kenzie, they got ambushed by treasure hoarders and hes just jumped in to protect kenzie, didnt realize she got a vision until after. kenzie got hers during a turnoment for non vision users, she almost lost but at the last moment got her vision and it helped her win. no one was happy that day </3
mal and wren are gay and like music. both live in mondstadt and got their visions there but wren is from fontaine. there are SO many fuc,ing bards in mondstadt, why not two more. i dont know how these two got their visions, they are gay and like music what more do you want from me.
ripley and jen are knights of favonius! well, jen is. ripley is not TECHNICALLY a knight since she is too young but shes around them all the time. she wants to be an alchemist like jen and keeps bugging her to take her on adventuers but jen keeps saying NO which is CRINGE (ripleys words). jen got her vision pretty anti climatically, it just happened while she was doing work and studying stars. simple but nice. ripley doesnt have hers quite yet but in the future it will be an anemo vision. maybe on one of the first adventuers jen takes her on.
others notes uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh bearwoman has no vision (does not say how she lost it). rosies vision is hidden from all of them but its cryo, she got it after her and abigail had a divorce. abigail has an electro vision that she got after everything that happened between her and rosie. texas girl doesnt have a vision but she can also have a gun

Books Incoming mid-June edition
An eclectic selection this month. There are two Lumberjanes that I somehow didn’t get when they first came out, the two books I bought on the way to Lagos, the first Cesare Aldo which I ordered second hand after reading the first on holiday in April, a non-Maisie Jacqueline Winspear and a Lauren Willig that I preordered ages ago and seems to have only just become available in paperback in the…
