lumiere and company (1995), an anthology created to celebrate the centennial of film, is an incredible celebration of the medium. the directors—forty film festival darlings including david lynch, spike lee, zhang yimou, and abbas kiarostami—were each given the chance to film with the lumiere brother’s original cinematographie camera, while working within the constraints the lumieres originally faced: each film, edited completely in-camera, must be fifty two seconds long, without synchronized sound, and filmed in less than three takes. of course it is already interesting to see such a wide variety of auteurs working within such narrow constraints, but more fascinating than that are the points on which the many hugely different entries converged. the lumieres originally worked in documentary, seeking to preserve the world around them exactly as it is. this paradigm, shared with their family business of portrait photography, intrinsically positions the camera as something outside of time, something godlike that is capable of snatching a moment out of time and preserving it unchanged for eternity. virtually every entry in this anthology directly challenges this conception. some turn the camera back on itself, filming the act of filming or filming the camera being watched. others emphasize the stark changes both to the world and the camera that exists in the world over the brief hundred-year period of its existence. still others follow in the footsteps of méliès, that close-following antithesis to the ever-realistic lumieres, in pushing the boundaries of what can be done with the cinematographie and creating unreality, surreality, blended reality, and other acts of unfaithfulness to reality within the temple of truth that is the camera. in all cases, the camera is something at the center of life yet removed from it, within time but not bound to it, respected but not worshiped, trusted but not believed. lumiere and company (1995) provides a beautiful and thought-provoking retrospective on the art of film, and i would highly recommend it

SaSi Prinxiety Week 1/7: The Disney Movie Dispute
Prompt: Movie Nights
Tags: @prinxietyweek
Synopsis: Virgil is against watching Beauty and the Beast for the 7th time this week. Roman just wants to sing the songs. The two banter over the real relationship between Lumiere and Cogsworth. Fluff ensues. Your honor, they're gay. Case closed.
Characters: Roman, Virgil
Relationships: Romantic Prinxiety
Genre: Fluff
TW: None :)
"Roman, come on. This is the 7th time this week!"
Roman slid the DVD into the video player anyway. "You said it was my week to pick the movies, my dear emo!" He declared with a pose and a wink, "And so, I picked one of the best movies to exist!"
Virgil sighed, nestling deeper into his blanket fort. "You say that about every Disney movie."
Roman simply shrugged. "What can I say? Disney is simply a masterpiece in general!"
"Can we at least watch the live action version of Beauty and the Beast? I've seen the animated one so many times I can probably recite the entire script."
"Mm..." Roman thought about it as he plopped down next to Virgil on the couch. "Okay!" And then he got right back up and switched the DVDs.
Virgil could never understand the Prince's logic even if he tried. He hugged his bat squishmallow closer to him as he watched Roman switch out the disks with an odd amount of enthusiasm. How'd he manage to fall for this dork anyway?
The two sides were dressed in their comfiest pajamas, a bowl of popcorn and other snacks at the ready.
Roman grabbed the remote, flopping back onto the couch. "Let us resume our movie festivities!"
Virgil snorted, leaning into Roman's side. "Whatever, Princey, just press play."
The two sides continued in silence for a while, watching the film. Roman placed an arm around Virgil, who was nearly on top of Roman. "You comfy there, Scaramore?"
"..yeah."
"Good!" He ruffled the emo's hair.
"Don't patronize me."
The silence continued for another long while.
"Lumiere and Cogsworth are gay." Roman pointed at the TV screen, a determined look on his face.
Virgil nearly spit out his Monster. "What?"
Roman raised an eyebrow at him. "Have you seen them? The tension is there."
"Yeah, obviously, but why say it out of nowhere?" Virgil took another sip of his drink. "That was so random."
Roman grinned cheekily. "Because it needed to be said!" He proclaimed, squeezing Virgil's shoulder lightly, "Everyone needs to know!"
"..okay then."
They remind me of us. Roman gazed at Virgil for a long, blissful while. Virgil was too busy staring at the TV to notice, and Roman was thankful.
He adored him.
"Y'know, Lumiere reminds me of you."
Roman almost stopped breathing when Virgil said that. No, it had to be a coincidence. Obviously.
"Oh? Why's that?"
"Because you're queer coded, loud, and flirty as fuck." Virgil smirked at him. "That's all."
Roman scoffed. "Well, you remind me of Cogsworth! You're a stick in the mud, cautious, and overly literal!"
The two shared a laugh, enjoying each other's company.
Virgil let out a quiet sigh. "Roman, I know why you said that."
The red-clad side's face turned a bright red. "O-Oh?"
"Mhm. I'm not that block-headed, Princey." Virgil pecked him on the cheek, leaning his head on the Prince's shoulder. "I think it's a neat conclusion."
"Really?" Roman's face was now tomato red. If he had been wearing his sash, the colors could have matched perfectly.
"Sure do. You might be a clueless moron a lot of the time, but sometimes you're pretty smart."
"Hey!" He moved positions so that his head was now in Virgil's lap. The purple-clad side began playing with his hair, gently carding a hand through it.
Roman nearly melted at the touch. What else could you expect from the Romantic side?
"Awh, you're such a dork!"
"Shut up, emo!"
And they laughed, enjoying each other's company.
The movie was left unnoticed for the rest of the night, the boyfriends just living in their own little world.
When Janus found them the next morning, asleep in each other's arms, he wondered how much money he could scam them out of if he took pictures.
For the record, it was about 50 bucks.

Idk, I kinda ate this up for doing it in an hour.

Designing My Own Festival
Post-presentation Discussion:
- There is potential to screen outside of cinemas and galleries. For example, Lumiere (light art biennial)
- Video art is often ignored to ensure films and opera/theatre/ballet etc... recordings can be screened in cinemas due to how many they are despite moving image art being the most popular it has ever been.
- Possible essay research project

Imagine a sweater adorned with a giant, fuzzy Beast face or one that features Belle twirling in her iconic yellow ball gown. These sweaters are sure to bring a smile to everyone's face and create an atmosphere of fun and nostalgia. To make the party even more memorable, encourage guests to dress up as their favorite characters from the movie. Whether it's the courageous Belle, the lovable Lumiere, or the wise Mrs. Potts, there are plenty of options for both men and women to showcase their creativity. A costume contest could be held, with prizes awarded to the best-dressed characters. This adds an element of friendly competition to the event and gives guests a chance to show off their creativity. In addition to the costumes and sweaters, the party could include various Beauty and the Beast-themed activities. A screening of the animated film or a live-action adaptation could be playing in the background, allowing guests to relive the magical moments of the tale. You could also set up a photo booth with props and backgrounds inspired by the movie, allowing guests to capture the memories of the night in a fun and interactive way. General Plans for Fall 2023
Tumblr media
Like last year, I've made plans for the fall season. Even though I've been trying to slow down and engage in slow living more, it does look like this autumn is going to be anything but boring.
So this list is great for providing a guide for what I would like to do, but it's not intended to be a comparison of what I should be expected to do. Rest and balance are always the goal now as my holistic health takes a greater priority in my life.
Just as a reminder, even though I have the rest of September, October, November and the first few weeks of December to do these, some of the stereotypical autumn activities that you might see on social media aren't on it.
For example, apple picking is no where on this list because I'm not a fan of doing labor for free and calling it "fun." I just want to eat the apples. I don't want to pick the apples. But otherwise, I think you might like most of the suggestions below.
September

Go for a bike ride in the park 🚲
Binge-watch Penny Dreadful, Grimm, What We Do In The Shadows, or The Sandman 📺
Make my own pizza night 🍕
Make Rice Krispie treats (Don't know why, but these always feel very autumn-y to me. I think it's the marshmallows.) 🤤
Go for a walk in the park and enjoy the changing of the leaves 🍂
Attend a harvest or fall festival 🌻
Cook homemade soup 🥣
Paint my fingernails a dark color (e.g., black, blue, purple) 💅🏼
Take a road trip to Salem, MA 🚗
Visit occult / metaphysical shop ☠️
Enjoy some hot apple cider & hot apple cider donuts 🍎
Go on a guided ghost walk 👻
Try hot chocolate at 2 restaurants or cafes where I've never had it before ☕
