One of the greatest hugs in any film

Interview question: “Do you think Cassian and Jyn would have managed to connect even more due to their shared life experiences if they had even more time?”

Diego Luna: “Obviously! What a good question. I think that hug represents everything that could have been but was not and everything that was too, because that hug meant they were part of something together and I believe that union lasts forever”.

One of the single best story decisions that was made in Rogue One was this incredible hug between Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor, as they await death from the blast of the Death Star.

It’s sad enough just in the context of the film. After Season 1 of Andor, it’s even more moving. I think some of us will be emotional wrecks after Season 2. 

One thing I’m starting to realise only now is how Jyn’s story, as revealed in the film (and the novelisation), reflects Cassian’s so much. She was also a child of war, displaced and effectively orphaned, adopted before being forced to embark on a new life. She had it even worse than him, in many ways. But just like him she had an early zeal to fight, which she similarly went on to lose because of the bitter pain that commitment caused. She becomes disillusioned and cynical about the Rebellion. It takes a combination of hard knocks and a resulting realisation of the desperate NEED to fight the Empire - in order to preserve all that they hold dear - to radicalise both of them to the extent that they are willing to sacrifice their lives for the cause.

Cassian is already in that place - he reached it five years before. But in Season 2 I expect we will see further challenges, see the desperately awful things he might have to do and what else he will need to sacrifice ahead of his actual life. Sacrifices that wear down his soul, bit by bit. Luthen’s monologue hangs over everything. “ I burn my life for a sunrise I know I’ll never see.” It’s a bitter irony that Cassian is frequently placed in sun-rising imagery, culminating in the ‘sun’ of the explosion.

Jyn, in Rogue One, seems to be the spiritual shot in the arm that Cassian needs. In the same way that being inspired by his love for Clem, Maarva and Bix helps to spur him on in the Season 1 finale (when the chances of successfully rescuing Bix must seem non-existent)  Jyn seems to me to be the crucial reminder for Cassian of why he is doing all this in the first place. Her love for her father stops him from obeying the order to kill him. He just can’t do it. He can’t put someone he is growing to care about through the same agony he went through himself.

In the end, neither can live with themselves if they don’t fight. But both of them are fighting for the right reason: love.

The hug is platonic and therefore perfect because it’s universal, in a way: we can imagine - in their final seconds - that they can both see and feel the warmth and the arms of every single person in their lives who they ever loved in any form: parents, siblings, lovers, friends. And of course they also die feeling the arms of each other - bound together by their fight and sacrifice but also an embrace with someone they might have gone on to know, and to love, if the universe had been a kinder place. 

It’s one of the most perfect and beautiful death scenes in any film I’ve seen. 

But it’s also heart-crushingly sad.

Edit:

I think the earlier elevator scene is where they acknowledge the loss of what they could have had together. Cassian stares at Jyn with unblinking focus but he looks like he’s dying already from his injuries, and Jyn - not yet knowing for sure that she’s about to die too - looks completely devastated. By the time they reach the beach and see the blast approaching both of them look accepting of their fate… and I imagine that they can use their final moments to internally say their spiritual goodbyes to everyone they ever loved in their lives - and to each other. They are content to die together. They are at peace as they “become one with the Force”.

The sand is coarse on his fingers as he tightens the embrace and closes his eyes. Her face had been that of the last being he will see, and he is at peace with that. After all, she had already started to mend his broken soul and remind him of why he was doing all this in the first place. 

Love.

She is warm against him, her grip intensifying his physical pain, and intensifying whatever is going on now in his soul. They hug as if in the hope of keeping each other whole, the hope of somehow stopping the inevitable coming-apart. Almost as if to stop time and be forever in this state of in-between.

But there is no time at all. 

So he thinks he will imagine that the light is coming from her, her bright spirit - her hot molten core - soldering and melting them into one being.

- Due too bad anxiety, Bits has always had a difficult time interacting with people, leaving her to spend most of her time locked away in her dorm room at the House of change.

- Bits’ father has been missing since she was about 4 or 5. Bits was too young at the time to really understand when they had disappeared, but her mother was wracked with grief over a person she didn’t even know ever existed in the first place.

leo, i miss you, i love you

there are some oc’s you script into one dr and forget about and then there are some that become the backbone of your scripts and appear everywhere. leo bartels is somewhere in between.

leo bartels, i created in my improved cr script at age 14. and to me he will only ever exist at age 14. and when i daydream about him now, i revert back to the girl i was 4 years ago. leo and luna (my dr name back then) are time capsules of a time long gone but i can’t let them go. i listen to songs and think of him. i look at memes and think of him. and i imagine us going on all sorts of adventures.

we always got cast opposite each other in our school plays and it became a running joke. his parents would hire me to babysit his younger sisters because he couldn’t be trusted. we would invite each other to family vacations and gatherings and we were a part of each other in a way that was deeper than soulmates. more intense than twin flames.

leo bartels only exists in this one dr but he’s with me all the time. leo is my shifting journey personified and i’ll never meet him. he is a product of the environment he was created in and to remove him from that improved cr script from 8th grade would be like stripping away part of his soul. so i know i might never meet him in person because i will never shift to that reality. and leo will be happy with his best friend while i will feel like he stole a piece of my being in 2020.

recently i’ve been thinking about him a lot. i want to see him. i miss him sometimes more than i miss anyone from any reality. i want to make a waiting room for us. he’d remain forever 14 and i would age myself down so we’d have something in common again. and maybe we’d be happy.

- when they first started talking, they bonded over being able to see thestrals, but they had differing opinions on them. luna was fond of them but theodore disliked them, mostly because he hated watching them eat

- they are the weird arts kid x weird science kid duo and they support each other’s strange creations

- theodore doesn’t get why luna is content with being the only one to believe in the creatures she talks about, but he stopped trying to find ways to prove their existence because it made her upset

- overdressed gf x underdressed bf except it’s theodore in monochrome and luna in the full rainbow

- luna is one of the few people to believe in theodore’s conspiracies about the capabilities of time magic being hidden by the government, and he in turn trusts her about the wrackspurts. if thestrals are invisible until one sees death, it stands to reason that there are other invisible creatures too

- theodore reads the quibbler extensively and may possibly be drafting a request letter to xenophilous to get an article about the time magic cover up

- luna likes making her own jewelry and will sometimes make some for theodore too so they can match

- they both lack social skills in different ways and somehow this has made them click. two sides of the same coin two different poles of the magnet type relationship, grouped together and yet distinctly different

- they both plan on keeping their last names if they ever get married

- luna made theodore open his mind to divination. she’s invested in most of it but has a less common view that prophecies arent set in stone. a lot of people assume that prophecies mean the future cannot be changed but she sees them moreso as possibilities and guidelines for what could happen and warnings to prepare for the best way through that future they describe. theo still hates it but he’s more accepting of its validity, luna’s theory makes more sense to him

- theodore gifts her flowers for her clothes and hair and luna incorporates them into her designs (she absolutely makes her own clothes or at least tweaks them). she insists that he also keeps a flower so they can match

- sci-fi & non-fiction lover x fantasy & historical fiction lover. they both read quite a bit but in varying genres

- theodore always runs cold and luna knits him colourful gloves in the winter

- they go on dates every few weeks or so but it took them telling people for the rest of the school to realise they were dating because it’s rarely in big public areas, moreso little shops and forest areas and things like that

Xenophilius narrates stories for both of you and you listen to it with shinning eyes. At this point he considers you his own child.

In your fourth year, both of you got close to the golden trio and with Ginny. You , Luna and Ginny formed your little friend group . You all would go to Hogsmeade together and visit different shops, especially Zonko's.

Luna and You visit the kitchen often (Perks of being a Hufflepuff) and the Elves love you! They would give you so much food even after you tell them you don't need that much.

Dobby would adore you two and Winky would warm up to both of you because of the pure warmth you radiate.

Being Friends with Luna also includes dressing up as Lions for Gryffindor Vs Slytherin Quidditch Match and chanting "Weasley is Our King"

During your O.W.L.S. you would take care of each other. You made sure that Luna had eaten well , throughout the exams and you reminded her to take rest.

She also does the same for you, making your socks and sweater more warm by putting a charm on them so you could study the whole night without being uncomfortable.

Luna Lovegood is a terrible character in the Harry Potter books but one of the most endearing characters of the movies.

Luna in the books comes across like a total moron. She's quick to anger and be upset when someone says you're nuts, even though nothing she says makes sense. She has her moments where she's kind of interesting but mostly exists to be a goddamn idiot.

At least movie Luna comes across as spacy and absentminded, but wise beyond her years.

The scene where she feeds Thestrals raw meat and tells Harry not to be so quick to push away his friends, because it makes him less of a threat, is genuinely one of the best character establishing scenes in the entire movie series.

It actually flattens every other interaction Harry has with Luna in the books.

It's also funny because they have more chemistry in the one scene than he and Ginny have across the entire series too.

Both in the books and the movies.

Harry pretty much just likes Ginny because she's hot and because she's a jock. She has some funny lines but he's such a non character that it doesn't make sense for her to like him at all.

It's not like Harry is funny or interesting. It's one of the weakest aspects of Harry Potter, that the protagonist has the personality of a sock.

I also think Luna comforting Harry after Sirius died is done better in the movies than the books too.

It might just be the actors or that the director/writers of the movies understood the assignment better than jkr ever did.

Making a spacy character is fine, but one who's just a blathering moron, and never having Harry really appreciate her for who she is, just reeks of bad characterization.

Even that small cute scene where Harry invites Luna to the Slug Party is way funnier and cuter than anything the books ever did with Luna.

I also don't care much for Harry Potter shipping, and never have, but Luna and Neville are weirdly cute in the movies too.

I think the dopey but hard working and earnest character fits with the spacy but wise character pretty well.

They're both oddballs and they had small but interesting interactions here and there, mostly just in the fifth movie.

Most people avoided talking to Sarah because they feared her father, others because they thought she was exactly like him. Luna didn't listen to what they said about Sarah, and she wasn't intimidated by Professor Snape either.

After the two became inseparable, Sarah took on a very protective personality over Luna. She wouldn't allow people to bully her best friend, and anyone who did would receive a hex.

Luna always thought Sarah was the funniest person ever, Sarah could make her laugh just by existing. For Luna, Sarah's sarcastic and intense manner was extremely amusing.

When Luna was invited by a boy to the Yule Ball, Sarah was silently hurt and angry.

Luna understood that she was in love with Sarah in her 4th year, after Dolores Umbridge tried to prevent groups from getting together. Luna and Sarah's time together was limited this year, and Luna really missed her partner.

The thing about the fandom headcanon that calls Pharma Ratchet's crazy ex and treats him like some sort of stalker or intrusion on Ratchet's love life (usually with Drift) is that

On one level, it's already annoying when a perfectly fine/interesting character is reduced to nothing but "bitter ex getting in the way of The Actual OTP" because it simplifies the character to only exist as a satellite to someone's ship (the bitter loser who can't let go/doesn't deserve person A/etc) instead of having their own life going on.

But when it comes to Pharma it's particularly annoying because it reduces Pharma to "the crazy stalker/bitter ex", framing Pharma as if he's the villain ruining Ratchet's life with his inability to just let go,

When in actual canon it was Ratchet who was best friends with Pharma their whole life (they're even shown together in the Functionist Universe). Ratchet who ditched Pharma with barely a word of goodbye (before Delphi, and ironically the same conversation where Pharma asked Ratchet if he should accept the station at Delphi). And it was Ratchet who asked Drift if he was scared of going into DJD territory as an ex-Decepticon, but treated Pharma like scum for killing patients under threat of being murdered by the DJD. And Ratchet who stole Pharma's hands. And Ratchet who tried to manipulate Pharma by using his deepest insecurities against him on Luna-1.

It's not like Pharma is some rando who Ratchet barely knew. They were BEST FRIENDS whose friendship was severed on a really messy note. Pharma has every right to be invested in a relationship/friendship that almost literally lasted he and Ratchet's entire life. It sucks when people implicitly treat Pharma as if he's obsessed and should just move on when the reality is that it was Ratchet who first terminated their relationship with no explanation or even a goodbye (pre Delphi) and then with leaving Pharma to die and then stealing his hands (post-Delphi). So is Pharma really "obsessed" or is he just understandably upset about being betrayed by the person who should've known and cared about him the most?

So like, it's really annoying when Ratchet has so many flaws in canon and questionable ways he treated Pharma, but the fandom just calls Pharma a crazy stalker ex as if Pharma is the freak who's overreacting and mentally insane while Ratchet is just some guy who was only minding his own business. To me it's not even a matter of shipping, it's just the fact that Ratchet DID handle his relationship with Pharma super fucking poorly. And I really wish more people in the fandom acknowledged that instead of framing Pharma as the evil/crazy/overly attached one for being upset about being ditched. Pharma has reasons to be pissed off and driven to get revenge on Ratchet, and even if his romantic feelings towards Ratchet might play somewhat of a role, Pharma is way more than just some stalker ex who's evil because he's crazy and wants Ratchet to be his boyfriend.

I mean Pharma literally says on the page that the reasons he's angry at Ratchet are for ruining his plans at Delphi and for stealing his hands. Even though Pharma-as-Adaptus orders Drift shot later in LL, it's not explicitly framed as some romantic jealousy and could also just as easily be construed as Pharma getting revenge for Drift cutting his hands off. I don't think Pharma ever even talks about or mentions Drift in the entire story. It's very clear that Pharma's beef/obsession with Ratchet is entirely between him and Ratchet and Drift is only a footnote in all of the reasons Pharma is pissed off.

Always appreciate a lore drop

So we've finally confirmed that not every UMA has a Negator, and not every Negator has a UMA. It does seem strange to me that Fuuko would say the pairings are rare when we've seen so many, though. Death, Change, Luck, Move, Stop, Burn, Tell, and possible Information with Unknown, that's 7 or 8 out of 28 Negators who have a UMA counterpart: that's between 25 and 30%, I wouldn't call that rare, and it seems likely that many other Negators do have UMAs like presumably Justice, Fade, Sleep and Break at the very least since those feel like the most restrictive

Maybe I'm misreading it though and every Negator does have a UMA, and the pairs are rare in the sense that it's rare to find a UMA that can be Negated directly. Still, the main point is there's no Unbeast, there may not be an Unsoul, there's probably no Unsummer/Unwinter/etc., and most disappointingly there's no Uncrab. I really wanted to see that one, too...

With this revelation, we now know that the already dire disparity between Negator and UMA in this competition is much worse than it ever seemed. I never really considered the possibility of, say, every Negator and UMA lining up to square off against each other, but if our original concept of all Rules having one on each side were true, then it would be only slightly skewed in favor of the UMA since they're giant monsters with healing factors. Knowing that there are significantly more UMA than Negators, though, that would be an obvious loss for the Negator side as the sheer number of nigh-invincible monsters would obviously overwhelm the smaller force that can Negate at best a third of the opposition

However, I don't believe that Luna simply let Sun stack the deck in his favor completely unilaterally. The fact that there's never been a point where all of the UMA could attack at once and the rules of engagement allow for the Union to team up against them while also utilizing Artifacts means that Luna must have made a concerted effort to rebalance the game, though clearly she's the "challenger" since Sun is still undeniably the one with the advantage. That's a fairly standard rule in bets like this - the one who wants to usurp the throne has to fight at a disadvantage to prove that they're stronger or more deserving of it than the current ruler

It also just makes for more exciting storytelling for the main cast to be weaker than the enemy, as everyone loves an underdog story. Equal rivals are fun too, but uncontested beatdowns get stale fast, so it's for the best that the cast that the audience follows has to struggle. This is especially fun in series like UU since it requires that the cast gets clever with how they use their powers, like Andy stacking Unchange/Undraw/Unbreakable to squish Sick in under a minute

I hope that this ends up getting brought back up when we next fight Sun or talk to Luna, cus the nature of their relationship is probably the biggest hole left to fill here. Right now they're pretty nebulous gods; we know about their game, and we've seen that Luna has a surprisingly nasty personality for being ostensibly on "our side," but other than that we know next to nothing about either of them. What kind of life did they have before they started their game? How long did they exist? Were there other gods, or just them? Were they always enemies? Are they even enemies now? It looks like it'll still be a while before we get to answer any of these questions, but this chapter really helped contextualize exactly how their wager is set up
