Day Nine Hundred and Seventy Five
Well it started getting cozy, girl
I let you control the reins
And despite what I knew to be true
I'd hoped that things would change
I'd even say I can't completely blame
My naiveté cause of our situations
In retrospect with the things you say
Would shift direction when put into action
But I just let it whiz on by
People say, "L.B., it's goin' awry!"
And I'd flip out and say, "That's not right."
Now I see my shit's not tight
And I changed my mind

Lyrics Born — That 1 Tyme in the Studio: Acoustic Selections (Mobile Home)
After a quarter century in the business, Lyrics Born has announced his plan to release two more albums and then drop out of the music industry indefinitely, turning his attention toward acting and his cooking show (and whatever else he might discover). The news came out on April 1, so it's hard to take it completely seriously, but it's mid-May and he's still going with that story as he puts out the first of those records, That 1 Tyme in the Studio: Acoustic Selections. It's not the first time LB has done something like this (Same !@#$ Different Day's remixes of his debut being the most notable), but it's certainly fun. He brings in a band to take on some of his favorite tracks, occasionally completely reworking them but more typically staying close to the original.
As a track list, it's a nice overview of his solo career even if, sadly, nothing from his best album, Vision Board, appears here. The biggest change comes with popular song “Callin' Out,” which gets a slowed-down reggae arrangement without losing any of the energy of the original. “I'm the Best” trades a bit of the funky spaciness for some extra jazz sounds. “Chest Wide Open” hits a perfect groove, hinting that it could have been a ragtime cut from the start (somewhat comically — Lyrics Born initially hated the music for the original version, he but went with it and wound up with one of his best songs). The record closes with “Something Better” and a strong performance from vocalist Joyo Velarde. It feels like a goodbye moment, as LB talks about his desire for “pursuing so much I haven't truly discovered.” As much as his musical muse seems to drive him, he's drawn to something more, recognizing “a higher purpose” in wherever he goes.
That 1 Tyme is an odd release, utterly enjoyable but not quite a career overview before the big finish. At just nine tracks, it feels a little underdeveloped, like a quick bit of fun for LB and his band, but a little bit of a placeholder. He commits to each song, but with so many albums to pull from, he missed out on the chance to really make a statement about both his career and his current interests. That's a small complaint about an unexpected treat, but the record's brevity might be suggestive of a career coming to a crossroads. As good as what's here is, it's probably for serious fans only (Now Look What You've Done, Lyrics Born! Makes for a better introduction to the artist), but LB's energy, musicality, and wit should come through even without a knowledge of the original renditions.
