Very much enjoying my new copy of Hamlet.

Out-Heroding Herod in some of his deliveries, Kenny's Dane put the ham squarely in Hamlet.
Seriously though, this is the pocket Hamlet I have fantasized about for years. It's perfect.

The Short Story Reader #48 - A Martian Odyssey by Stanley Weinbaum (Classic Edition)
Previous | Previous Classic SF story | Next …I nearly refused to read this short story, following an opening that has aged about as well as cow butter. Eek. It bears the marks of early 1930s pulp fiction without much grace, from the exclamations of its speakers to the singular cast of said characters to the portrayal of a woman as no more than an object of desire (a trend that dominates sci-fi…

Tumblr media
just decided to share with y'all my not-so-big but not-so-small Frankenstein editions collection 👁️👁️
I have 14 books for now! most of them are English-language editions, but I also have several books in Ukrainian, as well as one in German and one in French – really hope to find an opportunity to collect more editions in other languages in the future.
details are under the cut!
1. one of my latest thing! Frankenstein (Deluxe Edition) 2023, with absolutely stunning illustrations. Damn, it was quite expensive for me, but ahhhhh this is so beautiful I can't-
Tumblr media
2. another beaty! Macmillan Collector's Library's edition, small but so pretty under the supercover, and THIS blue colour!! and inside design!!
Tumblr media
3. this one is one of my ultimate faves ahhhhh. Signet Classics's edition, and I'm absolutely IN LOVE WITH THIS COVER, HEELLLL!! it also is very pleasant to touch
Tumblr media
4-5. German and French (with McAvoy on the cover jkjdkdjdkd) editions! they were the gift from my friend and I really love to have them in collection – also really love the choice of colours in the German edition, just YES
Tumblr media
6-8. three Ukrainian editions – first 2 in Ukrainian, the 3rd is in English and has a very silly cover :)
the first one is my favorite, because I really like this format, and I also leave notes in it during the process of re-reading the book
Tumblr media
9. also my latest purchase – Frankenstein: Junji Ito Story Collection. I haven't read it yet, but heeeellll so gorgeous wtf
Tumblr media
10. Usborn Young Reading's edition of Frankenstein. More like retelling for children, but oh, it has really cute illustrations on each page :3
Tumblr media
11-13. few more editions in English!
first one – Penguin Clothbound Classics's edition, and of course I NEEDED to have it, because it's really looking and feeling so damn good. This also was the gift from my friend (the same one with the German and French editions) and god, SHE IS THE BEST.
second – Collins Classics's edition, I just like its cover – laconic, but kinda expressive??? idk. but well, this one has very small font of text just uhhh impossible to read.
third – idk what it really is lol, but the cover looks pretty but also kinda funny because of this photoshopped heart lol
Tumblr media
14. my very first edition, it's in russian and I don't have much to say about it, but it was cheap and has some of my notes so I keep it.

mid year book tag
i was tagged by @the---hermit to this wonderful book-related tag game and i was so excited to do this!! my reading goal for 2022 was 25 books and i actually literally yesterday reached that goal :o it’s so wild to me that i have reached my reading goal halfway through the year already! not that the number of books you read matters, but as someone who used to read maybe a max of 3 books a year, this is just absolutely amazing to me that i have managed to already read so many books!
best book you’ve read so far in 2022 : if i had to pick just one, it would be lonely castle in the mirror by mizuki tsujimura, that book broke me in the best and most healing way possible.
best sequel you've read so far in 2022 : the secret commonwealth by philip pullman, it was a long book but it kept me interested the entire time. also the dream thieves by maggie stiefvater.
new release you haven't read yet, but want to : gallant by v.e. schwab is still on my list for this year.
most anticipated release for the second half of the year : i haven’t really been keeping up with upcoming releases but chain of thorns by cassandra clare comes out in january 2023 apparently and i’m really looking forward to seeing how that series ends! (not this year, but almost lol)
biggest surprise favorite new author (debut or new to you) : i’m going to say brandon sanderson, i didn’t imagine i would enjoy skyward as much as i have but the writing and worldbuilding are just incredible and i am excited to check out more of his books in the future (he’s written a LOT of books so i won’t run out of them quickly lol)
newest fictional crush : no character really comes to mind because i don’t think i personally crush on a lot of book characters but i have to say that i absolutely adore spensa from skyward and ronan from the raven cycle/the dreamer trilogy 😭😭 but they’re not really crushes, more like new favourite characters that i got to know this year
book that made you cry : lonely castle in the mirror by mizuki tsujimura (try reading that ending without crying. i dare you.)
book that made you happy : so many books!! i mainly read in hopes of books making me happy. loveless by alice oseman was a very cathartic and lovely read, under the whispering door by tj klune was SO GOOD and i smiled so much, also all the moomin books by tove jansson that i’ve read this year so far
most beautiful book you've bought so far this year (or received) : i bought this really beautiful macmillan collector's library edition of anne of green gables by lucy maud montgomery! it looks so nice on my shelf
what books do you need to read by the end of the year? : i’m hoping to finish lord of the rings this year (i’m reading return of the king rn), other than that idk, i’ll just see what i’m in the mood for!
i’m tagging @sensiteave @hannistudies @fluencylevelfrench @melaschnie @la-galaxie-langblr but anyone who sees this is free to say i tagged you because i’d love to hear about your reading! 🥰

Ibn Battutah ? ethnographer, bigrapher, anecdotal historian and occasional botanist ? was just twenty-one when he set out in 1325 from his native Tangier on a pilgramage to Mecca . . . He did not return to Morocco for another twenty-nine years, travelling instead through more than forty countries on the modern map, covering seventy-five thousand miles and getting as far north as the Volga, as far east as China and as far south as Tanzania. He wrote of his travels, and comes across as a superb ethnographer, biographer, anecdotal historian and occasional botanist and gastronome. With this edition by Mackintosh-Smith, Battutah's Travels takes its place alongside other indestructible masterpieces of the travel-writing genre.Designed to appeal to the booklover, the Macmillan Collector's Library is a series of beautifully bound gift editions of much loved classic titles. The Jane Austen books hardcovers for the Macmillan Collector’s Library editions. My favorite ones are Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park (look at cute little Fanny), and Persuasion for the mystery aura on it.

ok so anyway listen i have a love-hate relationship with penguin's clothbound classics. their understated design is gorgeous and (in theory) they're slightly more affordable compared to other collectible editions... BUT. they are so cheaply made it's honestly unbelievable 😤 technically they're not even hardbacks since they have glued bindings. there's not a single thread to be found, they're essentially paperbacks with some thicker cardboard for a cover thats been wrapped in the cheapest fabric (it feels terrible). just like a paperback they dont open flat since the glue is super stiff, and just like a hardback the have a hard cover obviously so its kind of the worst of both worlds?? and the print on that fabric cover sucks too omg i only have two but they both have the same discoloration where the sticker (which is SUPPOSED to come off) used to be and the design rubs off so easily it's not even funny
#but they (or most of them) seem to be printed in the uk so that's nice#buy local etc lmao... altho idk what kind of paper they use but it doubt that its acid free#point is they look nice but they dont feel nice#they wont last very long which defeats the point of a collectible edition#and they're too expensive for what they are#as far as i can tell the everyman's library editions still offer the best quality at a low price but... they all look the same#they dont have a lot to offer visually#the leatherbound canterbury classics sell for around 20 pounds/30 dollars just like the b&n leatherbound classics#and yeah those use bonded leather and they're made in china but#at least they're actual hardbacks with stitched binding and ornate designs etc#the only series im aware of that offers both high quality and a somewhat interesting design is the macmillan collectors library#they're very well made with sewn bindings and gilt edges and they're only 10 pounds#but they're also very understated and#you have to like light blue lmao#also they're tiny which means the font size for some longer novels is very small#its weird that there arent more options in terms of well-made books like#just simple high quality prints#with designs that also look interesting on a shelf#its either overpriced mass market stuff like the ones i mentioned#or very bare bones library editions with zero decor#or super expensive handcrafted books that are sold as luxury gifts with like gold leaf decor and shit#no middle ground#also some of these use random reworked editions of classic texts like?? hello? (macmillan collectors library being a notable exception)#not to sound like super lame but i have some antique books that i got for 5€ at the flea market that are in better shape#than some 25€ hardbacks i got last year#they dont make them like this anymore#idk if anyone has done this before but maybe ill make a masterpost about all the collectible editions im aware of and... idk rate them? lol#might turn into a bookblr after all#&

My new copy of Pride and Prejudice arrived yesterday! I love this version of the book, it's small and light and perfect for travel. The book also has some stunning illustrations too that I love.
Feel free to message me if you want to talk about Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen or the Regency!

W.E.B. DU BOIS - 'LONDON' (FIRST PUBLISHED 1911)
First sentence:
'There is in the world no city like London.' (Du Bois, 2022, p.255).
On empire:
'This empire is a coloured empire. Most of its subjects - a vast majority of its subjects - are coloured people. And more and more streets of London are showing this fact. I seldom step into the streets without meeting a half dozen East Indians, a Chinaman, a Japanese or a Malay, and here and there a Negro. There must be thousands of coloured people in the city.' (Du Bois, 2022, pp.255-6).
On London:
'London is polite and considerate to her darker brothers. There is colour prejudice and aloofness undoubtedly here, but it does not parade its shame like New York or its barbarity like New Orleans.' (Du Bois, 2022, p.256). 'Yet London is uneasy. London is sensing the strength and determination in the darker world and is wondering what it all portends in the future. The unrest in India and Egypt causes deep and widespread apprehension in all England, and the situation in South Africa is being narrowly watched.' (Du Bois, 2022, p.256).
