I need a fic where the war never happened because I like to imagine that when wangxian starts dating (but only jc, yanli and lxc knows and the rest of the cultivation world think they hate esch other), wwx jokes that if lwj wants to marry him he has to ask first to jiang fengmian and madam yu.
But lwj, bless his heart, actually does it. Also this is the time when yanli and jzx broke their engagement so when people start to talk about the lan clan going to yunmeng with the intention to marry a jiang, everyone thinks that it's yanli and jzx starts to panic.
So, lwj gets to yunmeng, madam yu is looking at him like she's about to kill him if he does something wrong, jfm is at his wife's side but we all know she's the one who takes the decisions.
Madam yu: so, you want my daughter's hand in marriage. Well, you're not jzx, but the second jade of lan is not...
Lwj: sorry, but I'm here to ask for Wei Ying's hand.
Wwx can't take it anymore and starts laughing.
Wwx: LAN ZHAN! I wasn't being serious!! I can't believe you actually did it!!!
Jfm and madam yu are confused, yanli feels sorry for them but at the same time this is too funny, and jc wants to die.
Because holy shit??? What do you mean that lwj, the amazing lwj, wants to marry wwx????? Madam yu and jfm are in shock. They obviously accept but they're like. So confused. Didn't they hate each other???
It gets worse, because a few days later jzx arrives to yunmeng and suddenly yells: "PLEASE LET ME MARRY YOUR DAUGHTER I REALLY LOVE HER PLEASE DON'T MARRY LAN WANGJI" or something like that.
It's pathetic. Jzx is there with only jgy and its obvious that he spent the last days flying as fast as he could to yunmeng, because he looks like shit.
But yanli finds it adorable, and jgy convinces madam yu to accept jzx terrible proposal.

Some people don't seem to realise that if not for Jiang Fengmian bringing Wei Wuxian to Lotus Pier, Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng would never have been friends (or friendly). I would even argue that Wei Wuxian would be nicer to Jin Zixuan than Jiang Cheng. Why? Because Jin Zixuan at least has some honour. A scene that illustrates this better than anything is the Xuanwu cave. Who went against the Wen to help Mianmian? Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji and Jin Zixuan! And how did Wei Wuxian react to that unexpected turn of events? He praised him! (Well, kinda)
Jin ZiXuan lifted his brows, “Is that enough? It wasn’t enough for people to be flesh shields for you, and now you want live humans to bleed for you to use as bait?!”
Wei WuXian found this somewhat surprising, So Jin ZiXuan really does have some nerve.
ExR. ch. 52 (original emphasis)
And what was Jiang Cheng doing? Trying to "reign" Wei Wuxian in so that he "doesn't stir up trouble". Why did he not go against the despicable Wens as well? Let me use his own words:
Jiang Cheng warned, “We aren’t even able to care for ourselves; how do we have the time to care about the trivialities of others?”
And Wei Wuxian's response:
Wei WuXian, “First, this isn’t a triviality. Second, things like this, somebody will have to care about them, sooner or later!”
ExR. ch. 52
And Wei Wuxian doesn't say this because they're talking about Lan Wangji and burning of Cloud Recesses. This is the fundamental difference between them. Jiang Cheng is too self-absorbed to care about others (unless they are related to him by blood), while Wei Wuxian wants to help everyone if he is able to, not because he "has a hero complex", but because that's the right thing to do.
People can be friends with others while having different ideas, but when you disagree on the core beliefs, friendship is hard to achieve.

Sometimes I think of the choices of two different adaptations (the donghua and the untamed) to soften Madam Yu's abuse on Wei Wuxian and I'm left baffled.
"she held back her whip". What do you mean she held herself back ? Where ?

Saw a mdzs fandom post suggesting that chengxian be tagged as incest. And now I'm imagining that Madame Yu would be so against the idea of people believing that Wei Wuxian was part of her blood family that she would actually set up a betrothal between him and Jiang Cheng just to prove it. Not with Jiang Yanli, though; her girl deserves better.

Madam Yu to Jiang Fengmian: A-Cheng can’t have a dog but you bring home a child?

One of the key things about Wei Wuxian's dynamic with Madam Yu is that even after everything he deeply deeply respects her. And in fandom I very often see people change that into something a lot more negative because they think his feelings need to be "corrected" into something more "appropiate" for the woman who abused him
And I do get it. It can be deeply cathartic to finally let yourself think badly of your abuser, especially if you were made to feel like you owed them something. So of course people are going to explore such a thing in fanfiction. But I do think that you lose something very interesting if you decide that he didn't care about her.
Wangxian's first two marriage bows are in front of her spirit tablet and Wei Wuxian openly says she should consider one of them the bow to the father and mother, essentially claiming her and Jiang Fengmian both as his family. He's so shocked and offended by the idea of attacking Jiang Cheng in front of them that it pushed him over the edge of exhaustion and he fainted.
Mind you all of this is after the scene with the tree where he let Lan Wangji catch him, a moment meant to symbolize Wei Wuxian accepting himself as worthy of protection and help. Even after that realization, he still respects her. And Lan Wangji sits with him. Lan Wangji, who certainly has no qualms about hating people who've mistreated Wei Wuxian, nonetheless lights incense and bows to her and Jiang Fengmian's tablets with him, because if nothing else he accepts the respect Wei Wuxian has for her.
Look, all I'm saying is that of the two people who heard Yu Ziyuan's last request before her death only one of them listened to her and it wasn't Jiang cheng!

Genuine question I'm asking:
Why do some people expect Jiang Cheng to protect Wei Wuxian from Madame Yu's abuse?
Like I don't get that. Why would you expect a younger child to protect the older one against their abusive mother. Especially someone like Jiang Cheng who has been taught that what he says and does doesn’t matter.
I just want some clarification on this cause I'm confused.

M, WIP, 15k, Wangxian
Summary: Lan Xichen breathed in sharply, a crazed laugh escaping him. He lifted his gaze to meet his eyes, a look of despair etched onto the hard lines of his face. "My brother... my brother has always been our mother's child. For that, he could not live. He is gone. I could not find him, and I could not have brought him home. I can only hope now that Wangji is at rest," he said quietly, the wind whipping the greying locks of his hair around his face. Wei Wuxian stared at him, horrified. Lan Xichen looked away as fresh tears rolled down his cheeks. "I have only ever wished happiness for my brother, but I fear I have instead brought him death." Kay's comments: Oh, this story really has me on a tight hold and I can't wait to see what happens! It's starting out with Lan Wangji not returning to Gusu after he saved A-Yuan (and his sister, who also lived in the Burial Mounds!!) and instead seeking shelter at Luo Qingyang's place. We also got more of him being defiant and seeking out his mother more often back when she was still alive. The Lan Xichen POV to finding his brother gone in chapter two was also *chef's kiss* Excerpt: It was a normal day for Lan Xichen. Of course, as normal as a day can be when one’s brother gets whipped within an inch of his life and remains completely immobile. If normal could be defined as being consumed by your worries, then Lan Xichen’s day was absolutely normal. It was not as if Lan Xichen’s childhood was not defined by being a mediator between his brother and his uncle, between his brother and the elders. Surely, this push and pull would remain for the rest of their lives. Lan Xichen sighed. He sat himself on the side of his bed and nimbly pulled his hair out of his sleeping braid. The same braid he tied for his brother every morning. As Lan Xichen got dressed for the day, putting on all six pristine layers of his robes, he stopped at his desk. These days, he found himself almost crushed with the amount of work he had to do. Shufu, at the very least, decided to take on the work that Wangji could no longer do. Lan Xichen knew Shufu cared for and loved Wangji, but sometimes, even he himself found it hard to believe.
pov alternating, canon divergence, lan wangji leaves the gusu lan sect, rogue cultivator lan wangji, lan wangji is lan sizhui's parent, fatherhood, disability, madam lan backstory, wen qing lives, sentient burial mounds, wie wuxian in wei wuxian's body, families of choice, grief/mourning, lan wangji & luo qingyang friendship, angst

Absolutely obsessed with the idea of Jiang Cheng, in the wake of the Jiang Sect's massacre, just massively overdoing it with the defensive measures in Lotus Pier —
It was bad enough when they were first rebuilding, but in the nearly two decades that followed every single time Jiang Cheng had a nightmare about his family dying and/or Lotus Pier burning down, he would immediately get up and start working on the defensive arrays, or the evacuation plans, or so on...
People think of the Impure Realm as an impenetrable fortress, but after Lotus Pier burnt down and was rebuilt? No other sect could stand a chance against Jiang Cheng's obsessive paranoia.
Lotus Pier has everything from defensive arrays, to evacuation plans and saferooms, to secret codes and signals known only to the disciples, to hidden underground and underwater tunnels, to booby traps, barriers, poison gas, etc etc etc...
Never again will Lotus Pier be sieged — not if Jiang Cheng has anything to say about it.

I think the saddest part about Wei Wuxian's abuse by Madam Yu isn't the whipping or the kneeling or the belittlement... but the way she treated his parents.
Wei Wuxian's parents are dead. He is an orphan. He also lived under the same roof as the man who knew and was friends with his parents, especially his father who used to be his servant.
And yet he knows almost nothing about them, he knows as much as a bystander about who Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze were. The only things he has is a foggy memory or two and other people's gossip. All because of Madam Yu.
He can't mention them, he can't talk about them at all or ask about them because he will get punished, because Madam Yu hates their (mainly his mother's) mere existence and makes it everyone's problem. And it's so funny too, that she is always the one mentioning them in the first place, always to insult them. Wei Wuxian grew up in a place where his parents were badmouthed all the time, where he couldn't mention them or learn anything about them from Jiang Fengmian because Madam Yu made it impossible.
It's just so sad.
