recent reads you should also read
i am super way behind on doing reviews for books i’ve read which is bad but also i dont have the energy at the moment to do a proper deep dive into each one and dissect them (also because the backlog goes back to March and i simply don’t remember all pertinent details). so! instead of trying to catch up on them individually, im simply going to list the books and share why you could consider reading them as well. i hope you find something you enjoy!
Our Bloody Pearl by D.N. Bryn Nonbinary siren / mermaid who is attacked, kidnapped, and disabled keeps up her emotional defenses until she meets a softie pirate with a knack for technology (incl. prosthetics). sequel in the works!
On The Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta i love melina’s work and i know i love her work so it’s stupid it took me so long to pick this one up, but if you’re looking for cross-generational found family with a tragic backstory and stubborn teens falling in love and rebelling and standing up for each other you definitely can’t go wrong with this one
The Wicked Deep by Shea Earnshaw three sisters haunt a small harbour town, drowning boys every summer when an outsider visits and stirs up the population. each sister has a different opinion on the curse and how to handle it. the twists were a bit predictable but it makes for an easy read.
That Inevitable Victorian Thing by E.K. Johnston a post-steampunk world from an alternate history where Queen Victoria was more feminist in her policies than she was in our history sees her granddaughter visit Canada before she has to marry a computer-decided match. there she meets a childhood friend and new loves while uncovering a pirate conspiracy. ft. an intersex character and queer romance.
The Salt Path, The Secret Barrister and A Street Cat Named Bob im reccing these together because i read them one after the other and combined they provide a much needed insight into British society and the ways people can easily find themselves falling through the cracks and trying to handle it with as much dignity as they can. honourary mention for The Durrells Of Corfu which explores this concept (and many others) a few years in the past.
Circe by Madline Miller i am a sucker for retellings of mythologies and fairy tales (see also my female myth retellings rec series) so this was a required read for me. vindicating female characters written by men and intentionally depicted as evil is one of my favourite narratives angles and if you agree you should definitely pick this one up.
The Hand, The Eye, And The Heart by Zoe Mariott inspired by the legend of Hua Mulan, this story follows a protag who was raised female but presents as male to take their father’s place when the army calls. with the power of magical illusion they work their way up through the army while also discovering a rebellion and a conspiracy. sidenote: after i read this book i learned it has been criticised because the white author is telling a queer Asian story. if the story sounds intriguing, you may also want to check out the following rec lists for additional options:
what to read after you finished (re-)watching Mulan: Rise Of A Warrior
more East Asia-inspired fantasy
retellings of Asian mythology
this Pride poc rec list
a list of asian lgbtq+ books
Asian wlw books
lgbtqiap+ ya books by Asian authors
The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert similar in vibe to The Darkest Part Of The Forest, this book is split into two sections: discovering a fairy tale world and tracing its existence in our modern world, only for our protag to follow the breadcrumbs into that beyond world to be tasked with finding a way through.
