This is a thing I do sometimes when I watch a really good show. Just some questions and themes to keep in mind when I inevitably rewatch The Sopranos. I may add to this if other ideas come to me.

Inflection points–when people had a real chance to make the right choice

Moments when characters actually do the right thing, or at least right-ish

Try to make sense of The Blue Comet (Melfi’s exit) and Kennedy and Heidi (Christopher’s death), both of which I found jarring (for very different reasons)

Character pairs to compare and contrast: Tony/Chris, Tony/Meadow, Tony/AJ, Carmela/Melfi, Silvio/Melfi, Richie/Ralphie (at first Ralphie felt to me like Richie 2.0, but he ended up being very different), Tony/Janice, AJ/Chris, AJ/Meadow, Chris/Jackie

i'll start by saying i don't think any of them would be yelling for no reason, especially not at someone particularly.

i do think, however, that Chris has a reputation at work. When they're really close to a deadline Chris is Quiet. the sort of Stressed Quiet that makes everyone recoil whenever he walks by because his aura is so thick... he won't yell but he'd be incredibly blunt "that code is a mess. re-do it" in the coldest voice you can imagine.

which is why, when Pretty Mum drops by the first time, and the see Boyfriend Chris... people are shocked.

The nights are tasteless without you: part 5 ~ Ari Levinson fic

A/N - This is my first proper multiple chapter story which came to me while watching a Bollywood movie. It is set in Mumbai India where Ari is a professor at a university meets a person of colour - Marathi girl at the train station. There will be other Chris Evans characters as professors and Henry Cavill   characters as professors  

Warning: Please read this before reading the story. 18+, smut, sex… etc

Ari was going to Andy's birthday dinner which was held at the Taj. He was nervous about meeting Andy's friends and trying to make conversation with them. He was told some of the teachers from the university would be coming. 

He quickly got ready, grabbing the gift he got Andy with Maddy's help. It was a nice fountain pen for all the documents he had to sign. Ari grabbed his phone and keys hearing the taxi horn signaling his ride is here. 

Arriving at the Taj, Ari was greeted by Andy who wanted to make him feel welcome. They hugged, Ari giving him his gift before walking inside. 

Andy introduces him to the few teachers that have already arrived, Steve Rogers the boxing coach, Frank Adler the Philosophy professor, Syverson the mechanics professor and Clark Kent the Journalism professor. They all shook his hand, Syverson went to get Ari a beer - Kingfisher. 

"Here you go Ari," Syverson said with a southern accent. 

"Thanks man, what do you teach," Ari said looking at Syverson built figure and felt a little intimidated. 

"I teach mechanics, showing people how to get their hands dirty," he says, winking at Ari. 

"Don't mind him, he is already in the party mood," Andy said, taking Ari to meet Steve. Steve was also very built but friendly to talk to. They enjoyed a good conversation about how spicy the food was in Mumbai.

After meeting half the teachers and downing 5 bottles of beer, August and Lloyd strutted inside with sunglasses on.  

"Who are they, they look like they are from the mafia," Ari said, making Steve and Andy chuckle. 

"Ari, August is the one in the brown suit, he is a motor designing professor, and Lloyd in those ever so tight pants is the head of the IT department. Colin over there in the black suit is the cyber security professor, Jenson in the loud shirt is the web design professor and Ransom in the brown jacket is a coding professor," Andy said, handing Ari and Steve another beer. 

Ari looked at them both and smiled, they looked intimidating but he focused his time on the few people he enjoyed talking to, which was Andy, Steve, Colin,  and Clark. Music came on and everyone was dancing, lifting Andy and throwing him up in the air. 

Everyone was having fun, dancing to bhangra and Bollywood music. It was 12am, Ari was drunk out of his mind and without looking drunk called Maddy. 

"Hello Ari, hello. Everything ok," she said, concerned as to why he called her at 12 in the morning.

"I really really like you Maddy," he slurred, taking a swig of his beer. 

"I like you Ari, but you're drunk. Please be careful and safe, text me when you reach home. He hummed and hung up and put the phone away grabbing some beer. 

It was 2am when Steve offered to drop him home as he only had two beers 4 hours ago. August and Jenson carried Ari into the back seat of the car. 

"Maddy," he moaned as August tried to put the seat belt on him. The three men looked at one another and then laughed. Steve got Ari's address from Andy and was able to drive him back home. 

Ari's phone kept ringing, the song mamma mia was his ringtone making Jenson sing along to it. The phone stopped ringing and then rang again making August annoyed. 

August grabbed the phone out of his jacket and moaned at the candid photo of the girl calling. He pressed the answer button and said, 

"Hello sweetheart," he said biting his lip, 

"Who you calling sweetheart, can I speak to Ari," Maddy said annoyed. 

"Sweetheart, Ari is occupied," August said, opening the camera app and taking a picture of Ari asleep. He sends it to Maddy who gasps, not liking the behavior of the guy on the phone. She hangs up and is now very worried about Ari and hopes he is safe. 

Maddy keeps calling every 15 minutes to check up on Ari. August was flirting with her, making Maddy annoyed, hoping Ari is ok. The next time she calls, Jenson takes the phone and speaks to her. 

"Hello," Jenson said softly, still singing a song while talking to Maddy. 

"Oh you're not the idiot who spoke to me last, I didn't like the way he flirted with me. Can you please make sure Ari is ok and gets home safe, I'm worried about him, he is new in Mumbai," she said, her voice dropping a notch. Her crush for Ari was growing and maybe one day she will get to ask him out for filter coffee. 

"No worries, dost, we have Mr Responsable Steve driving, and he will get Ari home safely," Jenson said, smiling at Steve.

"Yes, ma'am, I will take care of your husband," Steve says as the call is on speaker. Before answering, the call got cut, and she wondered why Ari had told them they were married.

Tony Soprano and Feech La Manna’s card game

The robbery of the protected card game run by Feech La Manna was part of the background mythology of The Sopranos.  Its details were teased out over the course of four seasons, first introduced by Richie Aprile in season two and with the last info given by Feech himself in season five.

As we can piece together from the disparate stories, when Tony Soprano, Jackie Aprile, and Silvio Dante were young petty criminals -- not yet Made men in the Mafia -- they decided to make their first big score and rob a card game.  The card game was run by Feech La Manna, a capo (Captain) in the DiMeo Crime Family, which made it against the rules for anybody to rob it, but they decided to do it anyway.  Despite being against the rules they did it the ‘right way’: Nobody got hurt and nobody Made was at the game when it got robbed, which meant that vengeance wasn’t required by the Mafia code.  Once Feech figured out who did the robbery, Tony, Jackie, and Silvio were able to pay off the right people (Including Feech himself) to forestall any revenge.  Their skill at the robbery, their bravery to do it even at the risk of angering Feech, and their willingness to pay up afterwards gained them all significant respect in the Mafia and marked them for future greatness.  Indeed, Jackie and Tony both eventually became Bosses, and Silvio became consigliere.

As an aside, when telling his part of the story Ralph Cifaretto claims he was supposed to go and was only absent because he was sick, but personally I think that was a self-aggrandizing lie and he would never have been invited.

This story is often told to show Tony’s natural greatness within the Mafia society -- how even when he was a kid he was smart and brave and everybody knew he was Going Places -- and also to show how poorly the current young generation of criminals fails to live up to his example.  The last is of critical importance with Jackie Aprile Jr., the son of the Jackie Aprile who went with Tony that night.  Despite his father’s own wishes and Tony’s best efforts, Jackie Jr. is determined to become a bigshot mafioso just like his father and resents how Tony and the other leadership belittle and look down on him.

Eager to live up to his father’s legacy after he passed away from cancer, Jackie Jr. decides to replicate the robbery that got his father his start.  He recruits some of his fellow ne'er-do-well young punks and tries to rob a game run by Eugene Pontecorvo, a Made man in the DiMeo (Soprano) family.  But unlike his father, Jackie Jr. fucks everything up.  He and his friends were high on crystal meth so they were twitchy and jumpy.  They hadn’t done any prep work so were surprised to find out that Christopher Moltisanti and Furio Giunta, two very dangerous Made men, were at the game.  Worst of all, during the robbery Jackie lost control and shot the dealer, which sparked a larger gunfight.  His two accomplices were killed, and Furio was injured.

Now Jackie Jr. is a dead man, because robbing Made men, let alone actually shooting one, requires vengeance. Eugene, Chris, and Furio couldn’t give him a pass even if they wanted to, since they would look weak to the rest of the Mafia (Sidenote: In the original The Godfather this is exactly what tells Vito Corleone that he can kill Don Fanucci without fear of reprisals.  Fanucci had been beaten up and robbed by some kids, and then accepted a payoff from their families instead of taking revenge.  Vito knew that if he was actually in the Mafia, like he claimed, then he would have taken revenge no matter what).  Jackie Jr.’s only hope is that Tony gives him a pass, since as Boss his word is final.  But Tony doesn’t want to give Jackie a pass, because despite being the son of his best friend, Jackie Jr. is a little shit who cheated on Tony’s daughter and has been a headache in general for over a year.  So Tony passes the buck to Ralph Cifaretto, who is dating Jackie’s mother, and says that he will go along with whatever Ralph decides.  Despite Ralph saying that he wants to give Jackie a pass, he doesn’t have the fortitude to back that up and make an enemy of so many other members of the Family.  So, at the end of it, he has Jackie Jr. killed and moves on.

Perfect ending to Jackie Jr.’s story, and the perfect parallel to highlight that despite his massive ego he was never comparable to Tony Soprano.....except....

Well, except for the fact that as the series went along, some of the details that were teased out said that Tony, Silvio and Jackie weren’t quite as highly regarded for their stunt as it now seems.  In fact, Feech wasn’t happy to let bygones be bygones, he did want revenge.  Maybe not to go so far as to kill them, but certainly at least rough them up badly, and maybe even oppose their later induction into the Mafia.  And the only thing that stopped him was the fact that these three had big, powerful protection.  Richie Aprile, Jackie’s older brother, was already a Made man.  Tony’s father and uncle, Johnny Soprano and Junior Soprano, were capos themselves.  They had the respect, and the muscle, and most importantly the will to back down Feech.  It wasn’t that the kids did the robbery the Right Way, it was that they had protection to skate on the consequences.  Protection that Jackie Jr. didn’t have.  Ralph Cifaretto only cared about Jackie Jr. because he was screwing his mother, so when push came to shove he caved and let him get whacked.

Now obviously Jackie Jr. did screw up big time -- come on, people died -- but even if he had done it the ‘right way’ after all it still may have turned out badly for him.  Because it turns out the original robbery wasn’t a story of three up-and-coming kids impressing the old timers with their spunk, it was the story of three privileged assholes screwing around and getting bailed out by their family.  Just the same as if they were rich kids who tried the same thing for kicks and their parents got them off with fancy lawyers.

It’s not a testament to them at all, and is only viewed as such now because Tony (And Jackie and Silvio) are too powerful to question.  It may not be that Jackie Jr. was as big a screw-up as he seemed, maybe they’re just comparing him to a fantasy that wasn’t true in the first place.

Find out what his friend knows.” She pauses, head tilting to the side before a wicked smile crosses her features. “And take your time.” Which is code for: torture him as much as you want.

Her attention turned back to the man on his knees, she makes ‘tsking’ noises. “You’ve been a bad boy, Chris.” She doesn’t give him a warning before she pulls the trigger, a bullet right between the eyes. She would have played with him but it would be pointless, she’ll join Jeremy’s fun later.

That is until she hears the sound of a gasp and she turns around, gun aimed at Sam, before it lowers away from them. “You should know better than to sneak up on me like that. What’s the matter, Sam? Can’t handle me shooting someone? You’re going to need to get used to it if you’re going to be this deep undercover.”
