This week in @transformstorymagic we have been working with the #deity of #ganesh As I’m away from home where I have some gorgeous statues of Ganesh as he has been one of my most favourite deity’s for many years. I wondered what to do to add to my #livingsltar as I have no easy access to a printer. So I felt guided to put his picture on my spare phone and placed it on the #Altar. We have been creating a #puja he loves the #sweet things in life. Upon a walk I came across the most gorgeous Jasmine Tree and I picked some pieces to place with more lavender and a white rose bud, they all smell so sweet! I bought some fruit, banana’s 🍌 plums and yummy chocolate biscuits 🍪 as offerings along with the ‘fruit’ jam I bought and was unopened the day before. I felt guided to take out my mini cards I carry in my purse of Babaji, Quan Yin and a poem about being a Daughter and place upon the altar. The yogi tea message re ‘Happiness’ appeared on my bed this morning this was a message I received a few weeks ago when I was at an ‘innerdance’ training but I don’t recall where I put it and how it got there on my bed today ! I added a Trumpet style flower as it reminds me of an elephants trunk. I was introduced to a #ganeshmantra one I’ve never heard off before (I have used Ganesh Mantras for decades after being initiated into #kriyayoga it was the Ganesh Mantra my teacher gave to me to use, removing obstacles upon my journey. I chanted this new #mantra every day this week and I love to chang it while I’m swimming 🏊‍♀️ in the pool. A knight emerged over the nearest ladder, just visible through the dust. Isi jogged to meet them. Her body ached, but it was far away. No matter how far away she held the pain, though, it slowed her down. The knight’s staff cracked across her knee and drove into her gut, knocking the air from her lungs. She pulled back, gasping; a split second to catch her breath, and then she advanced again, swinging overhand. The knight raised their staff to block her sword. Her blade cleaved straight through the staff and rang off their helmet. There was no time to lick her wounds or appreciate her success. Another knight took their place, just seconds later. Though Isi’s muscle memory stayed reliable, her limbs were not responding fast enough. One knight’s sword tore her sleeve, another slammed onto her back like a hammer blow, and when she found a moment to breathe, fresh blood ran down her thigh, and she felt bruises starting all down her left shoulder and arm. A deep voice cried out, and Isi’s gut sank.

Beta reader call

The Blood Enigma is a contemporary paranormal fantasy novel featuring folklore in a modern setting, found family, not-actually-vampires, and the fallout from political intrigue.

Remy Ekhart is a bitterblood: once human, now transformed by vampire blood into something neither dead nor alive. His status as a dead man walking was further cemented seventy years ago when he faked his own death, withdrawing from the world of vampire politics for the sake of his loved ones and his own sanity.

It's a status he should keep, but urged by his sister Thea's pleas and a guilty conscience, Remy agrees to be the getaway driver in a rescue mission. It was never supposed to be a high-risk job, but he suddenly finds himself on the run and in sole charge of Elodie, a child of mysterious origins and even more mysterious abilities. Their one ally is the enigmatic Darren Bell, whose strange faerie magic and dimpled smiles are threatening to break down every barrier Remy has put up to shield himself. With the merciless beast of supernatural politics nipping at their heels, Remy soon realises he is Elodie's one hope at safety – but without access to more vampire blood to sustain him, his time is fast running out.

About the Beta-Reading Process

Novel length: 111,265 words (for reference, that's a little shorter than Northern Lights by Philip Pullman or Twilight by Stephanie Meyer, and a little longer than Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban)

Applications close: Sunday 28th May

Beta Reading starts: Thursday 1st June

Deadline: Friday 30th June, with an extended deadline of Friday 14th July for those who need it.

The purpose of this beta-reading round is to assess strength of large-scale story aspects like:

characterisation

worldbuilding.

(Or, to put it another way: I'm not currently interested in critique on the prose, spelling, or other "small-scale" technical aspects).

(This is @magicalwriting main) Happy very late wbw! I wanted to ask how the magic system in Anora worked. Obviously you don’t need to lay down everything, but the powers/abilities that each protagonist has would be great! Thanks!

thanks for the ask, and no worries about it being late i will ramble about worldbuilding any day of the week! this ask really helped me develop my ideas as well so thank you! it got a bit long tho so no worries if you don’t read the whole thing i just wanted to get everything out of my head and in writing haha

when i first started building Arnora’s magic system, i asked myself what the magic system would be based on. i feel like a very common base in fantasy is the elements (earth, air, fire, water, etc) and while i love that system (and will likely use something similar for my Onyx & Opal wip) i wanted to try something different. so the foundation of the magic system in Arnora is time!

the way time works in Arnora is a bit different than the linear concept we have in our world. There are three Pillars of Existence: The Past, The Present, and The Future (these are rough human translations cuz i’m still coming up with Arnoran words for them lol). but these Pillars all support our understanding of Time at any given moment, so what we would just perceive as the present an Arnoran would perceive as a culmination of the past, present, and future in one instant. it’s kinda abstract and i’m definitely still trying to figure out how to explain it well haha

in terms of magic, this means that all forms of magic ultimately stem from time magic. for example, necromancy is a form of magic that manifests The Past, and brings that manifestation into the Pillar of The Present. so whenever someone uses magic they are drawing on one of the pillars of existence, and this pillar could kind of be seen as their patron deity in a sense.

also, not everyone in Arnora practices magic but everyone has a connection to it since the magic system is based on time and the very fabric of reality. there are those who reject this system and try to perform magic outside of time itself, and these people are called nihilimancers. there are not a lot of professions that are frowned upon in Arnora but nihilimancy is regarded as the closest thing to evil magic there is. necromancy and blood magic are not considered bad in Arnora because their conceptualization of the soul and death is very different from ours.

i’m still working out all of the characters’ powers and abilities and these might change but here’s what i have so far. in parenthesis i put which pillar is associated with each skill line! i’m gonna put a ‘keep reading’ here too so people on mobile don’t hate me lol

Vanna: green and white magic (Future)

this includes healing/cleansing spells and nature-based spells. these are under the Pillar of the Future because performing these spells requires the caster to be able to envision what could be, and bring purity to an area darkened by the Past.

Xalia: conjuration and destruction magic (Past)

if you’ve read Xalia’s chapter you might remember the part where she turns her daggers into wings: this is a form of conjuration magic. she can also cast destruction spells manifest in a lot of ways but her favorite is purple flames! this falls under the Pillar of the Past because it requires envisioning something you’ve seen or experienced before and bringing that thing to pass.  

Silaesan: he’s weird since he’s a Time Magister so he is literally the embodiment of all three pillars

the main job of Time Magisters is to envision all of the Pillars and make sure that they do not collapse and disrupt the Timeline. this involves a lot of skills from each Pillar. divination would be a skill under the Future but reading the stars would be under the Past, and interpreting the current state of the timeline would fall under the Present.

Tilaraen: destruction magic (Past) they have some other really cool magic stuff goin on buuut it would be a massive spoiler if i told u so just wait n see lol

i can’t really say much about Tilaraen without giving major plot spoilers but just know that i’m super excited to write about their backstory more! their chapters will be a really good way to understand the structure of the magic system and how it could go wrong . . . and that’s all imma say bout that

Dorian: illusions and enchantments (Present)

Dorian is nothing if not a pickpocket and a thief, and his magic reflects this. he often uses illusions to pull off heists, and uses enchantments to give him a somewhat unfair advantage in combat. he is also very skilled with poison making! this is a manifestation of the Present because illusion requires manipulating what the viewer currently perceives, and enchantments involve imbuing temporary power into an object during a moment of need.

Mikah: evocation and abjuration (Past)

Mikah is my sweet cinnamon roll baby and i just want to protect him so ofc he gets these skill lines lol. evocation is more about doing damage in combat, whereas abjuration focuses on blocking and banishing. this falls under the Past because it involves learning from your mistakes in life and in combat to become stronger in the future.

Ari: artificer/transmutation (Future)

if you’ve read Ari’s chapter you will also see his magic skills in action! he is an artificer, which falls under the school of transmutation. this is similar to illusion in that it changes the appearance of things but with transmutation you are changing the appearance and actual nature of something. this falls under the Future because you must envision what you want that thing to become to successfully perform a transmutation spell.

Verena: necromancy and blood magic (Past)

like i said before, these forms of magic are not frowned upon in Arnora. because they fall under the pillar of the Past, they are more viewed as a form of learning from history. if someone has an issue with necromancy it is not so much with the practice itself but usually the implementation of it. i can’t say too much more on Verena’s magic without giving spoilers but security, safety, and power are incredibly important to her, and she felt that necromancy and blood magic were best able to give her that.

whew that was long! bless you if you read all of that haha. this is the first time i’ve actually written all that down, it was kinda just floating in my head before, so thank you for the ask and giving me the chance to get all of that onto the page! :)

also fun tidbit but now that i’ve explained the pillars a little hopefully the name of Tov’s tavern (The Crooked Pillar) makes a bit more sense!

uHHH depends on the world really. probably not, because there’s a lot of pain and angst going on in these stories. but the worlds themselves might not be that terrible to live in... hmm. i take it back. sure!

Purple: Which of your characters would become your sworn enemy?

uH well definitely Sophia from Starlight & Ashes. she’s very self centered, thinks the world revolves around her, and is willing to make it do so if things aren’t really going her way. not really my type of gal.

Orange: How many projects do you usually have going at once?

too many ... i try to focus on one primarily, but then that quickly becomes two, three, four, five, then drop them all and go back to one. i’m a mess. i’m currently working on one main story, though i’ve begun entertaining ideas for another...

For storytelling Saturday, how does your superhero school work? What subjects do they have? Are there other schools like it in the world of your universe? Do they get mentioned?

I’m back half an hour exactly to get this posted! Hey again, happy STS pt 2!

So, superhero schools! There are other schools besides Falks, although none are quite like Falks (more on that later). They function a lot like private schools because they require such specialized instruction, although most don’t force you to pay (besides initial application fees). If you’re going to a public school without a Hero curriculum, there are also extracurricular programs -sort of like club sports, I assume? I never did them, but I heard plenty about them. Anyways, so there’s a network of schools and programs across the country overseen by a board of people whose job is to make sure the schools are ethical and not unnecessarily dangerous. To make it more manageable, there are six school districts, essentially, (there’s a Hunger Games AU just begging to be written here, yall) that have their own mini-board. If something unethical or unnecessarily dangerous is uncovered by said mini-board, they report it to the big board who investigates and then possibly brings the law into it. That hasn’t happened very often, but it has happened. Also, at the end of the school year, each of the schools/programs get together to do networking and show off what they learned (HUNGER GAMES AU OMG). We get to learn a little about them through that, but we learn mostly through Cicero who isn’t a student at Falks; instead, they’re a public school kid who’s doing the extracurricular program.

Keeping up so far? Great! This is getting… concerningly long, so the rest is under the cut!

As for the other two questions (I’m answering these all out of order oOF) Falks is special (here’s the more haha), but generally only because it’s almost exclusively taught by retired Heroes + a few that are still working - like Amadeus, and Blitz drops in every once in a while. This - and generous donations from the Heroes who owe their career success to Falks - is what makes them so exceptional compared to other schools, but you don’t have to be taught by a Hero to learn the stuff. Just like how your soccer coaches probably weren’t professional soccer players, but they still taught you how to play soccer perfectly well.

So, subjects! I’m going to focus on Falks, but just know that this is relatively standard. Every grade is a little different as they get closer to becoming real Heroes, and training takes more of the forefront. So, I don’t know exactly how the older grades work yet. But for freshmen, they have a split schedule. 

On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays they have your normal academic core subjects: math, science, history, and english. The only difference from our curriculum is that academic days are bookmarked by a homeroom class, essentially, which is taught by the class advisor (Amadeus Black, in Sofia’s class’ case). In the morning homerooms, they talk about what they’ve learned on that week’s Tuesdays and Thursdays (more on that later), except Monday mornings when it’s essentially a free period. In the afternoon classes, they have debates and discuss social issues, which eventually progresses into them learning all the legalities they need to know to be proper Heroes.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, they do training! (Keep in mind that this is all heavily experimental, and I have no idea how well this would work out if it were, like, real) For freshmen, this focuses on learning the very basics and honing their Gifts.  So they start with ‘Gift meditation’, which is a heavily individualized class that gets them intimately familiarize themselves with their Gifts so that in the future they can do new and exciting things with it. Then it’s Gift-to-Gift fighting, which despite the name is more about learning how their Gifts interact with each other - at least in Freshman year. Sofia has alternate plans on those days to accommodate her not having a Gift - during the meditation period, Romilly does one-on-one training, and then during Gift-to-Gift she observes with Amadeus and then tells him how she could apply those observations were she allowed to be in the class. (They hope to bring her into it eventually, but for now the board won’t allow it) And then they break for lunch, and then they have specialized workout routines designed to fill out their weak spots (weight training, or agility-based training, etc.), although sometimes that’s replaced with special lectures from still-active Heroes. And then the day ends with hand-to-hand - Sofia’s favorite class and also mine for the sheer drama that is concentrated into that one class.

I'm sure most people on here in the tdm Fandom have seen the post with a few alternatives to Liam getting his memories erased. Well I read a collection of mini au drabbles posted over 4 years ago by magicalwrites on ao3 that very briefly offers a solution. Tragically they have since gone inactive, and they never expanded on this au, so I will give you the run down and expand on the idea

Following the event of Ruby and Clancys fight after Zu left east river, Clancy decides that the only way to have complete control over her is for her to be utterly alone

Getting rid of her blues is a simple enough task. First he deals with Stewart, twisting his mind to make him doubt himself and abandon any and all plans for camp liberation. Makes him give up on ever finding Jacks father. Makes him feel like he's not right for Ruby, that all he'll do is mess things up for her. That the only way to ensure her safety and happiness is to leave her alone. And finally, the idea for him and Charles to abandon Ruby at east river and run in the dead of night. He figures out quickly that Charles will be difficult to convince. But who does Charles listen to the most? Liam. He has Liam pitch the idea of there escape to Charles. And he takes the bait.

A few days they've settled on there plan, one actually concocted by the presidents brat, but they don't know that. First, while Clancy is doing his rounds, they sneak into his office and use the computer to find their parents. They are only successful in locating chubs parents, but thats good enough for them. Later in the dead of night they make a run for it. Leaving behind a letter of false promises and Liams leather jacket.

Ruby is devastated. They promised her they wanted her, that they wouldn't leave her. She blames herself, thinks its her fault, thinks it cause she's a monster that she drove them away. The only person she has left, unbeknownst to her is the reason she's alone. Clancy comforts her, making promises that it wasn't her fault. That she's not a bad person. Ruby may not be a bad person, but Clancy is, the event that causes Ruby and co to try to run from east river in cannon still takes place. But this time with no one for Ruby to run to. She stays in her cabin for two days, alone, angry, and afraid. Wishing desperately that she had just gone with Cate Connor and her psycho boyfriend. Then she remembers the panic button, her way out. So, she too runs from east river, Ruby leaves east river with only three things, the panic button, the letter of false promises, and a too big worn out leather jacket.

He stared out at the wood with eyes the same black as rich, rotting soil. The color bled out into the whites of his eyes as he sank into the magic that filled him. His dark hair curled over his face, shielding him from the sunlight. He looked longer and leaner in the harsh shadows of dusk, not so much like the little boy who gathered flowers for his mother in summer. The softness of his figure gave way to a sharp kind of ferocity in the way he moved—delicate, but with a single purpose. He looked inhuman with his eyes gone all black like that.

He crossed his arms over his chest and shook snow from loose black curls, and in the darkness, he looked more like their father. More like something forged whole from iron and given a purpose. When had he grown taller than her? Taller than his mother? He was not quite Liev’s height, but he would get there in a year or two if he didn’t stop outgrowing all his boots.

I’m thinking of doing a mini series for Ash and Gold of some myths, legends, and little stories about the gods in their world. I haven’t been writing very much for the actual novel because of school commitments and various other stuff, and little snippets that don’t have a long and complex plot are much easier for me! So let me know if that’s something that interests you, or if you’d prefer more traditional excerpts / character intros etc but posted less often.

Happy Worldbuilding Wednesday! I wanted to ask about your WIP Scarlet Snow! What is the main setting of your WIP? As in, where are your characters for the majority of your story? I also want to know where your main characters are from. I really like your WIP, it sounds so cool! (Btw, this is @magicalwriting)

hello @magicalwriting ! thank you for sending me an ask, but i’m not participating in Worldbuilding Wednesday, mainly because SS is a hot mess and the only worldbuilding i know atm is the magic system (and even that is a little shaky). i’ll answer your ask, but if others read this please do not send me any more asks. don’t feel bad though, it’s really not a big deal!

as far as i can tell, the world they live in is much like ours, but less advanced and Slightly Off. as for where they are for most of the story, they’re usually at the camp in Ardacombe Woods, and sometimes Yuki’s house, the Kurosawa shop. I haven’t yet figured out countries and things, so i can’t say where each character is from.
