ok, any headcanons on james that compliment the ones you've done for sirius?
i absolutely loved those and i'm really curious about james
HELL YEAH LETS GO
ADHD. This dude has to be moving, fidgeting, doing something, always. It tires him, and he sleeps very soundly for a full seven hours. Doesn't wake up even for earthquakes (Sirius once did a mini earthquake spell on the dorm room floor in the middle of the night as a prank. It did not wake him.)
Wakes up at an ungodly fucking hour. He doesn't own an alarm clock (it has no effect on him), but his internal clock is set to wake him up at exactly 4:30 in the morning for quidditch practice. He is done with jogging through the entire castle, half an hour of yoga, and an hour of quidditch before 7 A.M. rolls around. Sirius calls him "a demon from muggle hell" for it.
The only one who can keep up with Sirius' intelligence. He is scarily smart, but because most of his time is invested in quidditch and pranks, nobody realises just how smart he is until the results are handed out and he's right there next to Sirius on the top of the rankings. Both of them are always exchanging ranks 1 and 2 on overall performance. It annoys Snape and Lily to no end, because those two are always exchanging ranks 3 and 4 on the list.
The definition of Reckless. If Sirius hadn't stopped him, he would probably have turned the castle to rubble in less than five minutes. This was the exact reason why people (who were in the know) were surprised when Sirius was the one that sent Snape to Moony. They had all thought it would be James' fault.
A fucking bookworm. My dude reads literally everything from mystery to romance to encyclopaedias to research papers to fucking dictionaries of different languages. Even when he doesn't speak the language, the weirdo (affectionate and derogatory).
Indian. Specifically, from Pune city, Maharashtra.
About languages, he's learnt a lot of them. The order of learning of languages, starting from his native tongue, is thus: Marathi, Sanskrit, Hindi, English, Ancient Greek, Tamil, French and Latin. He learnt the first six at home, and French and Latin from Sirius. He's good with languages.
Photographic memory. The reason he never has to study, and also the fact that he understands everything he reads on the first try.
He and Sirius both have twelve OWLs and eight NEWTs. They have Outstandings in all of them.
My dude has the widest, largest doe eyes possible. The only people who can withstand them for more than two minutes are his parents and Sirius.
Bharatanatyam dancer. Has his Visharad certificate, and genuinely enjoys dancing. Gives at least three evenings per week for dance practice to keep up his muscle memory.
Doesn't actually hate Slytherins. Neither does Sirius. Both of them have several friends from the house of Serpents, they just hate the ones that actively use Dark Magic on muggleborns, and Snape and his gang are a part of that.
Lmao the sheer arrogance in him, oh my fucking Gods—
Doesn't give a shit about the rules set by other people (unless they're set by his parents), but has a set of rules for himself that he strictly follows. No one can tell what these rules are, but he has them and he follows them. At the top of that list, there is "never betray your loved ones". He followed that one until his death.
Nevertheless, he will break every single rule. Every. Single. Rule. For Sirius. For Sirius, he will do anything, from taking care of him when he's sick to burning the world for him.
The Hat would actually have put him in Slytherin, except he had no ambitions except to cause chaos at the tiny age of eleven years. Otherwise, he's almost a perfect fit for Slytherin— determined, strong willed, cunning enough to pull difficult pranks, resourceful (because how else you gon plan epic pranks?)
He went to Gryffindor for three reasons and three reasons only: Sirius was there, he had no particular ambition, he wanted to be with Sirius.
M O T H E R H E N. Such a mother hen, but only for a select few people (the marauders, Lily, and Harry). He doesn't give a fuck about anyone else, but these are my people and if I weren't here they would literally get themselves killed put of household related incompetence how are you still alive by the Gods—
Follows ancient Vedic religion (because I do hehe)
Very very panromantic. Demisexual.
Had a crush on Sirius for a short while in fourth year, and then on Frank Longbottom in sixth year after he had one (1) glance at the older boy dressed in full Auror robes.
Loved his mother so much omg he was such a Mama's boyyy
Gave shit to Remus for looking like a professor at the tender age of fifteen, but wanted to become a Transfiguration Professor himself. He was also excellent at Potions (another reason Snape hated him) but decided ultimately that Transfiguration was his calling
Was in his last year of his Transfiguration Mastery on Samhain of 81.
Died with a Killing Curse on his lips. He was ready to cast it wandlessly, for his wife and child. Died with a Killing Curse on his lips.

guide to writing a desi james potter (and even for harry)!
(desi is used for south asians. meaning india + pakistan, afghanistan, bangladesh, bhutan, maldives, nepal, sri lanka. now i’m indian so i can only speak about that but a lot of the tips are the same. please research! and be respectful while writing them! i’ll try to include as much as i can here)
i've lived here my entire life so trust me.
and this is gonna be long. under the cut!
1. james potter can remain james potter
we don’t usually anglicize our names. don’t go finding obscure names starting with j that you can anglicize to james.
it kind of perpetuates the stereotype of indian names being very hard to pronounce. and britain fucked us over so no way in hell we'll be changing our own name to something easier for white people to pronounce.
instead you can make potters indian christians. i have a lecturer named veronica so i can assure you people in india have all kinds of names.
its a suggestion of course. but i have read fics where james has very traditional and religious names. no problem with that but its a little out of the loop and old fashioned. but if you want some help with finding names then don’t hesitate to ask.
2. where is he from
okay so now this gets interesting. there are a 28 states and 8 union territories. james potter can be from anywhere and not just gujrat and punjab and tamil nadu.
where’s my james potter from the gorgeous seaside state of goa? from the busy heart of metropolitan mumbai? from the amazing states of northeast? from bengal? from madhya pradesh? from kerela? from-
okay this is not a geography lesson but you get my point! there are so. many. places. he can be from any of them.
3. religion
india has a big population of hindus, muslims, christians, sikhs, zoraostrians, buddhists, jains etc. agnostic and atheist people exist too (hi).
your indian character can be any of those, not just hindu. it affects the indian sounding name you choose for him.
example: goan christian james can be james maharashtrian hindu james can be jai
but being religious or not, it doesn’t stop us from enjoying all the amazing festivals. you don’t know what i’d do to read a jegulus diwali fic ashdjfksdj
4. looks
now i know everyone’s like obsessed with atj (i can’t see him as james at ALL) or for desi james, dev patel (god, he’s the only desi character in all hollywood movies im so sick of his face. i have much better fancasts).
but just like names, our looks are also different. pale, wheatish, dusky complexion. again depending on which state. we usually have dark eyes and hair. and light eyes like blue, green or hazel are pretty rare.
5. food
curry doesn’t exist. repeat after me. curry doesn’t exist.
naan bread isn’t real, naan is A BREAD. and even though butter chicken is tasty asf, we don't eat this on a daily basis, my dudes. (#justiceforpavbhaji). but we do eat a LOT of biryani (its apparently the most ordered meal in india lol)
and i know you want to make the "im very white for spices" jokes but where are my desserts????? rasmalai? gulab jamun? rabdi? so cloyingly sweet ashdj
and we call tea, chai and it can be sweet and spicy.
it would make me so happy seeing names of my favorite food sprinkled through out your fic even if you don't elaborate on his indian heritage much <;3
i can’t list off every single one of them here but my dms are always open if you need any help with them
6. not all of us
it makes me sad reading about fics where james doesn’t like his indian heritage. not all poc characters need an "accepting my culture" arc.

I know it's in the beginning, but any Director's Cut for 'You are worth splinching for'? I love the vibe of that story!
thank you so much !!! you're so kind!
I had A Lot of ideas for YWSF because I've never written a long canon-compliant multichapter (and probably won't, either, but never say never!) yet I have a ton of headcanons that I somehow wanted to incorporate into my writing, e.g:
When she nods, he goes on, “Mum is from Maharashtra, India, and warli is a Muggle style of art from there that she adores. Those pots are painted in that style.” - euphemia potter being indian, and in this fic, marathi/ maharashtrian, because desi!james is a favorite headcanon of mine. I, personally, am not marathi, but I chose to make him marathi in this because of warli vases LOL. it would definitely be more authentic if I made him tamil and added lines of tamil, because that's something I actually know, but, oh well... - the potters having a beautiful garden, and james loving that garden with all his heart! pairs with the herbology james headcanon I wrote up a few days ago.
"Anyway, I’m glad you like our collection of obscure décors. My parents have a thing for hoarding pretty objects from around the world, Muggle and wizarding alike" - it's a small detail, but the fact that the potter parents traveled around the world a lot, to belgium and korea and india, is because james was born so late in their life so they took up traveling as a hobby. and the reason they have muggle objects is because of that, too.
“A motorbike? We still have Da’s 60s’ Bonnie,” there’s a familiar twinge of grief in her heart that she studiously ignores, “so I know how to ride one if you’re looking for tips.”
- lily knowing how to ride a motorcycle! it's random and unlikely, but I love it so I went through the pains of searching up biking slang, hence 'Bonnie' for the Triumph Bonneville ... the things I do for the sake of fanfiction. and the 'twinge of grief' is because her Da passed away, in case that wasn't clear! keep in mind for later!
- competitive lily! in this case, it manifested through the game Irish Jacks, which I totally made up on the spot. the scene was supposed to end at, Just as it’s beginning to get unbearable, Sirius breaks it with a cheerful, “So, who’s up for a game of Irish Jacks?" but then I started thinking about what Irish Jacks actually WAS, hence the whole scene of them playing the game. and it was totally self-indulgent because I wanted an excuse to give her a nickname. lol whoops! (OH and the line Good thing she likes taking risks, then was definitely a double-meaning, the other risk in question coming later...)
--
That's it for the headcanons in the first chapter, at least, but there are some others in later chapters that I don't want to spoil ;)
One unrelated snippet I just wanted to gush about because I'm very amused by it is when Lily floos over to James' house and he has no idea how to act around her, it's so funny lol:
She and Sirius are now chatting — why does she always seem so much more comfortable around Sirius than him? — about motorbikes and Lily’s dad’s Triumph Bonneville, also affectionately known as a ‘Bonnie’. James has the sudden urge to announce that he, too, loves motorbikes, but wisely suppresses it before his mouth starts talking without his brain’s permission.
and ->
There’s a lull in the conversation, in which he grasps for something to say, but before he can decide on something that makes him sound intelligent yet also gracious and polite and charming and fanciable and suave —
He's so awkward, I love it. And the last line reminds me of how James is guilty of deepening his voice whenever Lily's around - he might claim not to fancy her anymore (lies) but showing off in front of her is a habit that's hard to shake!

oooh is it Holi tomorrow? :DD can you give us some ideas or headcanons about James celebrating Holi with his parents/Sirius/Harry? <33
Honestly, depending on a few factors, everyone celebrates Holi on a different day (the traditions for Holi are different depending on the sect of Hinduism and region of celebration as well). Also, North Indian होली and Maharashtrian होळी (search up the differences in pronunciation, it's a bit hard to describe) are two completely different religious holidays. The Hindi होली (ho-lee) is equivalent to the Marathi "ranga panchami" (ranga- colour, panchami- fifth day of a lunar cycle). As far as I know, the Marathi होळी doesn't have an equivalent.
The traditions I'm going by are my family traditions— the Marathi traditions of my region— so i hope you enjoy. Let's goooo!
Oh yeah, this is before Harry turns eleven and goes to Hogwarts.
The day of होळी signifies the first day of spring in Maharashtra. Every year, the members of the Black-Potter family start the day by watching the sunrise together with cups of spicy chaha (marathi for chai).
The day is pretty much the usual, except for food. James cooks up a storm in the kitchen, making all the pancha pakwaan (pancha- five, pakwaan- dishes) with puran poli (a sweet flatbread), three different vegetables, rice, amti (somewhat like daal, either drunk from the bowl or poured over rice), and a traditional dessert. They invite the Weasleys, the Marauders and the Longbottoms over, and have a veritable feast for lunch and dinner. A very chaotic affair, but the Black-Potters love it.
All three of them absolutely adore panchamrut (pancha- five, amrut- nectar of the Gods. It's made of five ingredients- milk, ghee, sugar, curd, honey). Once James is done with his pooja and the naividya (the first morsel/sip of any food/drink is always offered to the Gods), the three of them pounce on the drink with all the vigour of someone who hasn't had anything to eat for days.
As the evening draws closer, Harry, the Weasley kids, Neville, and Lily and Remus out to the woods that surround the house and collect dried wood for. Meanwhile, James, Sirius and Peter gather the panchamrut and a bite each of the pancha pakwaan, and ready the porch for lighting a safe fire with the help of the Molly, Arthur, Augusta, Alice and Frank.
Just as the sun sets, the bonfire is lit, and the blaze reaches high into the sky within minutes, helped along by magic. Everyone sits around it in a circle, closing their eyes and praying— the fire signifies the destruction of the bad energy of the previous year and the purification of the soul for a better new year. Holi is the first day of spring, a mark of new beginnings, a symbol of clean slates and fresh starts. The Holi fire is where you throw all your baggage of the last year so it burns till it is gone, to prepare yourself for the upcoming year.
The pancha pakwaan and panchamrut are poured into the fire to loud cheers from the children, and then the real festivities begin. Everyone walks around the fire in a circle, howling at the top of their lungs. The sounds are slightly terrifying, especially when the darkness really sets in and the only light is the massive bonfire, but Harry loves the ferality of the entire thing. It's primal, the way the war cries rise up with the fire, echoing throughout the massive grounds of Potter Manor like the echoes of screaming ghosts.
Sometimes, Harry, Ginny and the Weasley twins start war dances instead of the howling. Those times, Bill and Charlie eagerly join in along with James, Lily and Alice, and the hard and fast thumping of their feet on the packed mud porch makes it seem like an earthquake is cracking the ground open.
Other times, they write their mistakes, insecurities, bad thoughts and regrets of the past year onto slips of paper and throw them into the fire, to signify the new start. Last year does not matter anymore; it is done and you cannot change it. You can have a new beginning, though, and Harry vows every year that he will be a better person.
James loves these times, where everyone he cares about is close to him and glowing with happiness. Holi is his favourite festival, because it is the day he and Sirius kissed for the first time. It is the day he remembers with fondness— childhood years spent with his parents and grandparents and cousins in a crowded wada (kind of like a palace but the size varies from anywhere between four bedrooms to like 70), sneaking panchamrut from under his mother's nose, dancing Garba around the fire with his Gujju friends in India, the day the Potter family first moved to Britain right before his 11th birthday. People expect his favourite festival to be Diwali or Ganpati Chaturthi because they are loud and huge and phenomenal celebrations, but his favourite is this— all his favourite people in the same place with the same happy smile and the same traditions that he loved when he had blood family.
Holi is a festival for families and loved ones, and the Black-Potters have a lot of love to go around. Family isn't defined by blood, after all.

Do you think it’s possible both the Black and Potter families were Desi? The Desi and MENA Black family posts, Desi Potter family posts, and East Asian Black family posts have been living in my head rent free for a long time, and after reading some of your own posts (and the one you linked to), I’m wondering what geographic regions, ethnicities, or cultures best suit the Potters? Especially in the context of MENA or Desi House of Black, and MENA or Desi Sirius and Regulus, existing in the same canon/timeline/world/whatever. I guess I just really want to pick your brain, if you’re up for the conversation. Which. If you don’t want to discuss it, it’s totally fine! I would just rather ask someone who knows what they’re talking about than me just make a bunch of dumbass assumptions or read Wikipedia with 0 actual cultural context. In particular because the Potters and Blacks have such different stances on things like marrying Muggles or Muggleborns (or, hell, halfbloods) or even just how they interact with them in general. Based on some of the Potter history, they’ve always been more…lenient, I suppose, about mixing and social interactions, but based on your post some Desi communities would be very strict like the Black family. Are there the same sort of polarizing stances concerning caste and class? I’m just asking because the way Bellatrix in particular acts was compared in three separate posts to parts of overarching shared MENA and Desi cultural traits. I know not all families are exactly the same, but I wasn’t sure if there were such extreme disparities between families from similar backgrounds within Desi and MENA spaces, or how that applies to the Potters (or makes it more or less likely they’re Desi) in your opinion. I’m really sorry to bother you about this. Feel free to ignore it if it’s too much. If you have the time and energy, though, I would appreciate any insight you have to offer. (I’m also sorry if this is worded poorly). I don’t mean anything offensive by asking. I just don’t know how to find out without just…asking? I don’t want to put any pressure on you, so only answer if you’re comfortable. It’s just, I’m African American Diaspora so I can’t really claim any cultural competence, to know what it feels like to actually be Desi or MENA. If I’m honest, I’ve pictured James as black before and don’t know what it means or feels like to be someone I’m not, so a fresh perspective is refreshing. Plus, I want to write the Potters as non-white (I’ve never seen Harry as white), non-black POC with respect, care, and courtesy, and the best way to do that is to speak to real people. So again, I’m sorry for taking up your time. I hope this finds you well, and thank you for your consideration/for reading, even if you don’t want to, or can’t, reply.
I think it's very possible that both the Black and Potter families were Desi. And they can be any Desi culture you like. The way the Black Family can be maharashtrian, it can also be Bihari, or Uttar Pradeshi or any other regional culture you want to associate them with. Its entirely up to you and your imagination and the amount of information you have about the regional culture you want to tie them to.
For me, the Potters will always be Maharashtrian, mostly because I am a Maharashtrian and that is the culture I am most familiar with. Even in Maharashtra, which is the third largest province in India, the culture differs literally every 30 km or so.
Now about the Blacks' and Potters' differences in stances about blood purism: yes, there is exactly the same polarization in views about the castes and classes. There are many people who still follow the caste system even though it is "abolished" (I put this in double apostrophe because there has been a lot of political unrest in the north east Indian provinces about this over the past couple of months, search up recent events in Manipur if you want to know), and there are just as many people who are liberal and lenient. There are the same extreme disparities as you put it, and they are violent and if anyone tries to deny it they're an ignoramus and you shouldn't pay attention to them. The difference in... opinion, shall we say, of the people of India has been around for decades. There is a saying here "Unity in Diversity", and it is an excellent representation of the fact that India is diverse and it is going to stay diverse, and that is a good thing. There will be differences in culture, food, clothing, social cues, political stances, languages and dialects, religion and belief. These differences are what make India India. The likelihood of the Potters and/or Blacks being Desi is neither increased nor decreased by their stances in socio-politics, or any other habits/traditions that they follow or things that they say.
Re: you point about not knowing how to find out without asking— that is the only way to find out. If you don't ask questions, how will you get the answers? Pop into my inbox either here or on @amrut-ofthegods any time of the day and I'll make sure to answer. It might be a bit late but I will answer, I promise.
I'm so glad there are people actively wanting to learn about cultures and traditions apart from their own in a respectful manner, and anyone and everyone is always welcome to ask questions. Hope this helped!

it would make me so happy seeing names of my favorite food sprinkled through out your fic even if you don't elaborate on his indian heritage much <;3
i can’t list off every single one of them here but my dms are always open if you need any help with them
6. not all of us
it makes me sad reading about fics where james doesn’t like his indian heritage. not all poc characters need an "accepting my culture" arc.
give me a james who loves how his skin looks, loves going back to india every summer, loves mythological stories and narrates them to harry every night before bed, is so excited when he takes regulus and his friends to india for the first time.
just so much potential. i have way way more headcanons for a desi james if anyone’s interested
7. languages
most of us grow up bilingual or trilingual. the first thing a lot of us learn is english alphabets and grow up with our family speaking hindi, english and the regional languages. and our accents are way more subtle that you think they are.
you know the drill - 22 recognized languages plus a lot of regional languages and thousands to millions of speakers for every single one of them.
8. for the love of everything gay, please do NOT use google translate
don’t trust google or online translators or dictionaries. they translate your sentences right but no one speaks like that irl so it sounds very fake.
interesting thing, we speak a mashed up new language called hinglish (code-switching and code-mixing of english and hindi) and it has way more speakers than just
i speak english, hindi, marathi and some konkani and my besties speak gujrati and punjabi so if you want any help translating, please please ask!!
9. headcanons
this is a personal addition but pleaseeee i want a fic where the black brothers meet james’s extended family. i want a fic where harry celebrates his first holi. i want james humming bollywood songs and calling regulus "jaan."
you don't need your characters to have a big heavy discussion on colonialism or racism. but including these small things matters very very much.
10. racism
it is extremely likely that james might have faced racism in hogwarts and even in muggle aus.
we experience casual racism and stupid stereotypes which is very annoying. don't base your characters off the ones you see in movies and such. they usually get everything wrong.
resources
to get a hang of the geography some stereotypes baby name website pretty accurate video on the whole of india indian food
thank you for reading this and bearing with my keysmashes and rants. if you have any questions, feel free to shoot a dm or an ask <;33
