reading CoD fan fiction is wild because one post is talking about what the guys are like in bed and the next one is detailing how y/n was captured as a prisoner of war and tortured for information and describing all of the horrors they had to endure before being rescued

Hello there. I am a North American writer. My book-in-progress is inspired by Irish folklore. I am an autistic adult. My story takes place in Killarney. My idea for the plot is about an autistic Irish mother and her autistic Changeling baby/toddler. I was wondering if Changelings are still relevant in Irish folklore today? Also, is it okay if my Irish characters have non-traditional names?
I’m going to be honest and say that I don’t have that much knowledge about Irish folklore and especially about contemporary relevance or interest. I think the concept sounds interesting though
One thing I will say is to be careful when setting something definitively in one place, in this case Killarney. It can be difficult to get details right when you aren’t that familiar with the area and that makes it easy for people who are to be drawn out of the story. I’m not saying to not set it in Killarney - for all I know the setting there might be really important for your story. I was daunted by that and decided to go somewhere in the middle of setting it in a real place and a fictional place by setting it in a fictionalised version of where I live. So it’s definitely set in Co Galway but the town itself is vague. Maybe people will figure out where it is, maybe they won’t and will think it’s made up. And neither will be wrong as such.
As for the names, I’m not entirely sure what you mean by ‘non-traditional’. Old-fashioned Irish names are mostly all religious ones. Hardly anyone over the age of 70 has an Irish language name; I know many Pegs and Bridies and Marys, and Johns and Michaels and Paddys. People my age tend to have mixed Irish language, religious and English sounding names. In school there were many Jacks and Conors and Adams, and Ciaras and Niamhs and Jessicas.

haigh a chara tá siúl agam go bhfuil tú ceart go leor! i was wondering do you know any resources for learning Gaelainn? despite being from munster, in school we just learnt standard irish, but id really love to learn more munster irish. is breá liom do bhlag btw tá sé an-cabhrach <3
Míle baochas :) I do indeed know several resources, I made use of a lot of them lol, there's kind of two categories - Stuff about the dialect and stuff in the dialect. I'll start with 'about'.
Info about West Munster Irish
There's only 1 modern textbook I know of which teaches munster Irish, and it's kind of a rough read lol. This is Teach Yourself Irish (1961) (audio). The book is really really dense, one paragraph will contain a lot of information, and that can make it pretty easy to miss things, but it's still a very useful book - and much easier to use if you already have some Irish. It teaches Cork Irish but Cork and Kerry are quite similar (Kerry has a stronger Gaeltacht though so you're more likely to hear Kerry Irish). This book also has a weird transcription system for how to pronounce words, ignore it, learn the sounds of the language separately, and listen to the recordings that come with the book. Their system is buckwild and nobody else uses it.
You should also skip the sections labeled "rules for aspiration" and "rules for eclipsis", rather than reading them right at the start and use them as a reference if you ever need to.
Tumblr media
An Teanga Bheo - Corca Dhuibhne is a great book to get some knowledge on Kerry Irish as long as you can read Irish pretty well, since it describes lots of the important features. But it's a reference text and an overview, not a textbook. If you don't feel that comfortable reading in Irish or want to be able to search, you can use this online translation
Shameless plug, I talk about Munster Irish on my youtube channel, and I try and share info which people wouldn't find easily otherwise, new video maybe out this weekend maybe. An Loingseach on youtube - He sometimes gets bogged down in the linguistic weeds and doesn't edit his videos at all lol, but he knows his stuff.
There's a blog called corkirish.com and it has some useful info on it but the guy who used to run it is an awful shitter, I'm hoping that with more other people sharing resources we can make that blog irrelevant.
If you're at all interested in linguistics, there's more technical books describing the dialect which can be useful as references.
The Irish of West Muskerry - This is a book talking about the pronunciation of Cork Irish, in English, but using a lot of phonetic terms and symbols. Quite useful if you know how to read them.
Tumblr media
Gaeilge Chorca Dhuibhne - This is a book talking about the pronunciation and structure of Kerry Irish, in Irish, again using a lot of linguistic terminology. This one will be getting an updated English version at some point soon, hopefully.
The Linguistic Atlas and Survey of Irish Dialects (LASID) is a series of books showing the results of surveys where they went around to different Irish speaking regions and asked them what words they'd use for specific things, it gives you really cool maps like this: (Showing you how "Gaeilic" is used in donegal, "Gaeilge" is used in Galway, and "Gaelainn" is used in Kerry)
Tumblr media
This map is actually from a web version of the first book which is quite handy. The second book isn't available as a site but there are pdfs and it only focuses on munster so you can see some differences with in munster.
Stuff in the Dialect
Things to Read
We're probably the luckiest in terms of things to read when studying the Munster Dialect because there have been so many authors, and so many authors who write very dialectally. So a lot of munster features you see very prominently in writing.
Books by Maidhc Dainín Ó Sé (a lot of fiction as well as one autobiography)
Books by Peig Sayers (There's school editions of at least her main book (Peig), try to avoid those and find the dialectal version in a library (Peig - a scéal féin), and she has written other books)
Books by Pádraig Ó Cíobháin (I haven't read any of these yet personally and I've heard they can be quite hard by nature of being very poetic and sometimes abstract)
Fiche Blian ag Fás by Muiris Ó Súilleabháin (similar to Peig, this is autobiographical)
Books by Tomás Ó Criomhthain (similar to Peig and MÓS these are autobiographical)
Books by Peadar Ua Laoghaire (Fiction, these are quite old - 100 years - and that can make them more difficult, but they can be pretty good)
Béaloideas and Dúchas.ie - these ones are harder to read than the others for various reasons but can often be a lot more interesting. Béaloideas is a journal of Irish folklore which you can find on JSTOR for free, and dúchas.ie has typed and handwritten stories collected in ireland, overlapping with Béaloideas to some extent. They can be harder to understand since sometimes the writing is intentionally over-dialectal to preserve the traits, but it's often more interesting since you can find fun little stories about different things. Stories from these collections are also sometimes put into smaller books or collections. (Béaloideas ó Chléire, an Seanchaidhe Muimhneach) you can usually find those books on Archive.org
Things to Listen To
Beo ar Éigean - Chatty podcast, one of the hosts has kerry Irish
Saol Ó Dheas - Munster Gaeltacht news show, not the most interesting if you don't live in the munster gaeltacht but there's a lot of it and the host has really good Irish, so you can focus on that even if the stories aren't gripping lol
Cartlann Bhóthar na Léinsí - Munster Archive show, they pull out older recordings of even more traditional speakers, and the host has very good Irish too, the older recordings are quite challenging to understand, but can be good.
Things to Watch
Seal le Dáithí - Talk show on TG4, host has Kerry Irish
Ros na Rún - Some of the characters have Munster Irish, it's a minority though
What did I do?
This isn't necessarily a guide, it's just what I did specifically.
After learning standardy Irish at school, I started talking to people on discord (Craic le Gaeilge and Celtic Languages), this was really helpful because I got to talk to a lot of knowledgeable people and get conversation practice even without being near to Irish speaking areas or events.
I also started listening to Beo Ar Éigean to practice my listening. I stuck to standard for a little while here and got to grips with basic grammar stuff because I was focusing on exams and stuff, but eventually I was taken with Munster Irish because some of the people I talked to a lot used it and because I liked synthetic forms. So I started working through Teach Yourself Irish with the help of people on discord, and that gave me a good basis in munster specific grammar and forms. From there I asked lots of questions (v important) and read the Irish of West Muskerry because I'm a nerd, wouldn't really recommend this if you're not that interested but it is kind of fun if you are. That helped me get a better understanding of Irish pronunciation (and spelling as a result of that). (I also read Peig at some point here) After that I started listening to a lot of Irish, trying to do at least 2 hours a day over one summer. An Saol Ó Dheas every day on my commute to work, and other stuff too, just trying to get as much exposure as I could. I use the host, Helen Ní Shé as my "language parent" - that is, I try to model my speech after hers. And currently I'm still focusing on just getting more and more exposure, and I've been reading more books in Irish.

Use You | Michael Afton
Tumblr media
contains: smut, 80’s Bad Boy Michael (he’s 20), dom michael/sub reader, mike being a little shit by being a bit rough and sadistic, light degradation, teasing and denial, gn pronouns/anatomy (but written with a masc reader in mind), maidhc having no experience writing smut but trying his absolute best in the name of being a slut
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Yeah? You want me? Well then you’re going to have to beg.”
You should’ve known from the moment you caught a glimpse of that cocky smirk of his that you were in for trouble. Once Mike got a taste of the power he could hold over you it was impossible to knock him off that obnoxious high he’d gotten.
Yet you’d sought him out anyway, desperate for his touch regardless of how much you knew he’d tease you before even considering giving in to give you what you do desperately need. But what else were you supposed to do? Nobody else could even come close to making you feel as good as he can. Hell, even your own hands didn’t feel satisfying once he’d shown you just how amazing he could make you feel.
You’d done this countless times at this point; you knew how it went. With only a soft whine of impatient lust you knelt down before him, the rough weave of his bedroom carpet already digging into your skin as you do so. You looked up at him with your best pleading gaze only to find his pointed stare looking down at you in return.
Fuck, he looked so pretty like this. His wavy hair fell to frame his handsome features as he peered down at you and you swore that from this angle you could see every muscle in his arms as the dim lighting cast shadows beneath them.
You could guess how this was going to go; you’d done this countless times before and he rarely strayed from his preferred method of asserting dominance. He’d make you get on your knees and beg, then suck him off before eventually giving in to help you get off too. Normally he’d tell you what to do, but you knew what he’d say and you just couldn’t wait any longer.
Though as the soft begs left your lips and your hands reached to undo the button of his jeans he slapped your hands away, catching you off guard.
Your eyes snapped back up to him, confusion evident on your features even in the near dark of his room. It only seemed to further fuel his overconfidence as he lifted his leg to place his foot on your chest and push you back onto the ground.
Before you could react or ask what he was doing he was pinning you down with his hands at your wrists and his knees on either side of your torso. He leaned over you, bringing his lips mere centimeters away from yours but not feeling kind enough to actually kiss you despite how you found yourself subconsciously trying to chase his lips. You couldn’t help but squirm beneath him. With a sardonic chuckle he shook his head and clicked his tongue at you in exaggerated disappointment.
“Did i tell you to touch me?”
Your heart pounded in your chest. Having his lips so close, his body so close, it was hard to focus on anything he was saying. After a moment you try to force some sort of answer out only to have your words turn sloppy and unconvincing. “N-no, but-“
“Ah ah- no ‘but’s.” He paused, as if waiting to see if you’ll try to disagree. “Did. I. tell you. to touch me?”
All you could manage was a shake of your head. Your body stilled beneath him in silent submission, frozen in place save for the rapid rise and fall of your chest as your breath quickened with anticipation.
His chest rumbled with a low hum. With his body being pressed so firmly against yours the sound rumbled through your chest too, leaving you to whimper out at the sensation.
“That’s right. I didn’t.”
His eyes held your gaze in silence at first, his body just holding you down in place without speaking until his eyes raked down your body. “I was going to be nice and give you what you want after you begged for it like a good little thing, but now I’m reconsidering. I can’t just let you get away with touching me without permission, can I? No. No, i can’t..”
With his previous scolding you didn’t dare to speak out of turn. If you wanted any chance of getting off tonight you knew you’d better obey, and with how turned on you already were, you didn’t know if you could stand being left unsatisfied.
Mike left just enough of a silence for you to get squirmy, for you to finally start resorting to begging again, but he started to move again just before you could.
He shifted his hips against your torso. His legs settled at either side of your torso tightly enough to keep you from squirming and his hands tightened their grip on your wrists to do the same, while his eyes scanned over you lustfully before he hummed out yet again, this time the sound closer to a moan.
“Maybe I’ll just use you like this, hm?” There was a mischievous glint in his eyes when he looked back up to your face. Upon finding it flushed and desperate-looking he couldn’t hold back his laugh. “Yeah, maybe that’s what I’ll do…”
He shifted his hips again, this time rolling forward against your torso. The action drew a low groan from his lips and while you were pretty sure he was exaggerating the sound to further taunt you, that did nothing to stop the wave of arousal coursing through you. Fuck, he sounded so hot already.
As he rolled his hips down against you again you could feel his dick through the worn material of his ripped jeans and you wanted nothing more than to feel him more, to touch him, to jerk him off, anything to get more than this.
“M-Mike-“ You whined. Subconsciously you tried to reach out for him, only to have him press your wrists down into the carpet with more force.
“Shh shh, not now, baby,” Mike cooed, a stark contrast to his generally rough demeanor. “I’m gonna use my baby just like this, and you’re gonna be a good little toy and take it for me, yeah?”
Swallowing hard, all you could do was nod. If he kept going like that you knew you’d make a mess in your own jeans but you couldn’t stop him now, you didn’t want to stop him now. As desperate as you were to have him touch you, you couldn’t deny just how hot this was. He looked so gorgeous as he ground his hips into you, his fingers digging into the flesh of your wrists and his lips parted just enough to let those soft groans tumble out. The muscles in his arms flexed as he moved. The sight alone was more than enough to have you throbbing and before you even realized what you were doing, a soft mewl of your own slipped from your lips.
Mike didn’t stop moving but his gaze returned to your face, his eyebrows raised and his lips curling into an even more devious smirk. “Ooh, are you getting off on this? You like me using you for my own pleasure? I’ve barely even gotten my hands on you and I bet you’re already a mess down there for me.”
He ground his hips into you again, this time with particularly more force, making both of you moan out together. His hips continued to rock against you until his own breath hitched and he froze, his body trembling slightly.
“Fuck, touch me,” He finally groaned, his hands releasing yours before unbuttoning his jeans and pushing them down lower on his hips. That was the only thing you needed to hear. You immediately reached out for him, desperate for more contact, desperate to please him. You wasted no time in touching him through his boxers, the material already damp from his precum leaking.
“Yeah, that’s it, baby. Jerk me off real good and maybe I’ll consider returning the favor.”

hey, I'm gonna tell you something radical
if you think that you can't use your Irish because our country primarily speaks English, you can absolutely just speak Irish
I'm a Gaelgeoir, someone fluent in Irish, completely comfortable speaking in Irish, do it all the time. I speak Irish with my friends who are fellow Gaeilgeoire but you know who else I speak it with?
My non-Gaeilgeoire friends!!! I pinky promise that no matter how long ago you did your leaving certificate, no matter if you did Higher or Ordinary or Foundation, you know more Irish than you think you do.
Sometimes I just start speaking in Irish and people will understand me. I was at work today, talking to my coworker who is also a Gaeilgeoir (teasing her about being a useless lesbian lmao) and our other coworker said to us during that conversation "I think I actually understood most of that!"
He is not a Gaeilgeoir. Went to all-English schools, did his LC like six or seven years ago, and yet he understood 90% of our fluent conversation.
You know more Irish than you think you do.
And if you're worried people will think you're weird for using your cupla focail, anyone who has ever heard myself and above mentioned coworker chatting in Irish has always remarked on it when they come up to us at the till and it's always positive. I've started speaking Irish completely unprompted to my non-Gaeilgeoire friends and they have responded in Irish.
Another radical thing? I don't live in a Gaeltacht. I'm not from one either, don't have any family in a Gaeltacht. The language belongs to all of us, from Coirce Dhuibhne to Cork, from Muscraí to Maynooth.
Use your Irish. I promise you have some. It's easier than you think. I know our schools can be bad at teaching it, but you do absorb Irish, especially as a child. Children are like sponges when it comes to languages, you know Irish!
Just because you couldn't write an essay on Maidhc Dainín in fifth year, doesn't mean your Irish is shit. I couldn't write an essay on Maidhc Dainín in fifth year, and again I was a Gaeilgeoir in a Gaelscoil!
Our language is ours. It's not dead until we are and millions have died for it so it's our turn to use it.
Is linn na Gaeil. Is í ár dteanga.
Bet you figured that sentence out.

one of my biggest struggles with chronic illness (both mental and physical) is unlearning the idea that quitting is inherently bad. It’s extremely important to be gentle with yourself and understand that sometimes you just can’t do something- and that’s okay. You are not inferior or lazy/weak for respecting your limits. Simply existing with chronic illness takes more bravery and strength than people realize. You are not weak for respecting your limits.
