Is circular economy the future? "We need to share, repair and reuse products"
Tumblr media
Have you heard of clothing libraries, apple sneakers[1] or lighting services? Don't panic if that is not the case, these are all novelties that contribute to our transition to what is called a circular economy. The environment committee of the European Parliament has prepared a new law on this. "And companies are also making more and more smart products that we can use for longer or repair for reuse," says Geert Thorrez, consultant at VLAIO[2].
The European Parliament's environment committee reached an agreement on Thursday on a new strategy on a circular economy. Today too many products are designed in such a way that they break easily and require a lot of time and money to repair or recycle.
The new strategy[3] must ensure that our clothing, furniture and electrical appliances are designed in such a way that they are easier to repair, reuse and recycle. Sara Matthieu, negotiator for the green group, speaks of a "revolutionary breakthrough".
For example, the strategy can stipulate that jeans must last a minimum number of washes and must consist of a certain percentage of recyclable substances. That is a breakthrough when you know that many printers and washing machines were programmed to only be used a certain number of times, so that the consumer had to buy a new device more often.
Circular economy?
We currently live in a linear economy. We extract raw materials from the ground, that we then transport and process into a product. We use that product and once we think it is no longer working, we throw it away and buy a new one.
The circular economy wants to put an end to that, because that way is no longer sustainable for people and the planet. Raw materials are finite in the first place, and continuing to extract them is harmful to the environment. Moreover, raw materials often come from countries with unstable political regimes, which means that access is not guaranteed, and the extraction is often accompanied by oppression and exploitation of populations.
A circular economy wants to continue using materials and products as high-quality as possible. This can be done by sharing, reusing, repairing or upgrading them into a new product. The materials chosen are already recycled or bio-based to begin with, and are also recyclable or degradable at the end of their life.
Support to companies
According to Geert Thorrez, advisor at the Flemish Agency for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (VLAIO), we are facing a shift towards a circular economy.[4] More and more companies are opting for so-called "smart products", products that last longer and are more repairable.
"Companies requests for guidance from VLAIO double annually," says Thorrez on Radio 1. VLAIO guides companies in their transition to circularity. They provide advice on the one hand and financial support for the necessary investments in infrastructure and personnel on the other.
The building block of a circular economy is recycling, "and we already do that very well in Flanders," says Thorrez. "But now we need to scale up that circularity, and there are several ways to do that." What shapes are there?
Recycle, upgrade, restore and reuse
A basic principle is therefore recycling, where waste is transformed into a new product. For example, the new blue bag had to ensure that more plastic can be recycled into new plastic products, although this still requires a lot of energy consumption.
But waste can also be upgraded, which is called upcycling. "We see projects that turn apple waste into new sneakers," says Geert Thorrez. "Apple scraps can be transformed into a kind of leather-like substance through a special process." The Brussels brewery Brussels Beer Project has also produced beers based on unsold bread from Delhaize or broken gingerbread cookies from Maison Dandoy[5].
Reusing products is a form of circularity on which we are already investing quite a bit. Second-hand shops such as Think Twice[6] or De Kringwinkel[7] are popular with all ages, and Instagram or Facebook pages that sell stuff or clothes are also ubiquitous.
Items that are broken can also be reused, albeit after they have been repaired.[8] For example, people can bring their broken vacuum cleaners, clothes, bicycles and toys to the Circuit shop in Antwerp to have them repaired. Customers can also rent a "repair box" for textiles, bicycles or electrical appliances and get to work themselves.
Services or "unburdening"
Companies can also choose to sell not only products, but also services. For example, the electronics group Philips[9] introduced "light as a service". For example, the city of Kortrijk bought this service for its library. Philips will provide high-quality light there and will also update the lighting system as soon as possible. In this way, the customer is "unburdened" of having to maintain, replace or upgrade the lamps. When the service is over, Philips also ensures the reuse of the infrastructure.
To share
The sharing economy is also an important part of circularity. Many devices that consumers purchase sit unused most of the time. Consider, for example, a drill, but cars are also parked on average 96 percent of the time.
Large companies are already contributing to a sharing economy by not only offering their products for sale, but also for rent. "Decathlon or A.S.Adventure, for example, rent out tents or ski equipment,"[10] Thorrez explains. Shared mobility, which we know through Swapbike, Poppy or the well-known city bicycles, also contributes to a circular economy.

It stimulates and supports innovation and entrepreneurship and contribute to a positive business climate that strengthens sustainable economic growth and job creation. It does this in collaboration with many partners in a strong network. Its mission is to stimulate growth and innovation, to promote entrepreneurship, to support cluster operation, to create stimulating environmental factors and to encourage internationalisation of business activities. https://www.vlaio.be/en/about-us/let-us-introduce-ourselves
[3] On Thursday, Parliament adopted recommendations for the EU strategy for sustainable and circular textiles, with 600 votes in favour, 17 against and 16 abstentions. The text calls for textile products sold in the EU to be more durable, easier to reuse, repair and recycle. Their production should respect human, social and labour rights, the environment and animal welfare throughout the supply chain. MEPs also want EU and national measures to put an end to “fast fashion”. https://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/press-room/20230524IPR91913/parliament-wants-to-make-eu-textiles-and-clothing-industry-greener

[7] The Kringwinkel (Thrift store) collects items that are no longer used (but are still usable), then the items are sorted, cleaned and, if necessary, repaired. Then they are sold at very affordable prices in the Kringwinkel. The Kringwinkel therefore actively gets rid of the mountain of waste, offers usable items very cheaply and thus contributes to poverty reduction. In addition, they also provide (social) employment for the low-skilled and the long-term unemployed who are active in our workshops, shops and collection services.

Since 1997, it has been mostly headquartered in Amsterdam, though the Benelux headquarters is still in Eindhoven. Philips was formerly one of the largest electronics companies in the world, but is currently focused on the area of health technology, having divested its other divisions.

Prague Views and Brussels Sights
Dobrý den,
My week was surprisingly chiller than normal. I was supposed to have an exam in my Database class, but our professor moved it to next/this week because of a tech conference taking place at a local university (That means I have 2 exams coming up.... wish me luck). The talks were actually really interesting; I heard one on ethics and regulations on AI and another about greenwashing. Both speakers had tons of experience in their fields, and even better the conference provided free snacks :)
Anyway, I had some time before my afternoon class, so I decided to go explore other touristy spots around Prague. I don't know about you, but I definitely need my alone time especially when I'm consistently going to class and living with others. It was also one of the first warm weather days, so all in all perfect for a stroll. I didn't specifically have anywhere in mind and ended up wandering to Tančící dům and Vyšehrad. Tančící dům is this weird shaped building which I found out was a hotel. While I didn't end up going to the top, some friends said the cafe up there has pretty views. I rarely spend time in the southwest portion of Prague where Vyšehrad is located, but after my visit I'll definitely be back for a picnic or something else. There were 360 views of the city, and I could have spent the rest of my day there.

Short weekend for Brussels since we had a program trip scheduled! I'd heard mixed reviews about the city, so I wasn't sure what to expect. After our flight got delayed for almost an hour, I was thinking it'd be a bad sign. However, we were greeted with a double rainbow + sunset after landing <3
Tumblr media
Besides some rainy and windy weather, I'd have to say the trip was a big success. Brussels is definitely a 2 day city. Since we only had one full day, I don't think we hit everything, but I enjoyed just walking around and being one with the city. One of the most noticeable things was the murals that decorated tons of buildings. I never read Tin Tin, but I think it must come from Brussels because multiple types of art referenced it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Streets with a Tin Tin mural & my friend and I replicating a Tin Tin statue
The food also hit different ngl...Belgian and Liege waffles are on another level. I went back to Maison Dandoy the second day just to make sure I tried both. Belgian waffles are square, lighter, coated in powdered sugar, and in my opinion better for breakfast--since Belgian people actually don't eat these in the morning. Liege ones on the other hand are circular, denser, and have sugar bits in them. Mine was yummy, a little too sweet but good for dessert. Try the fries and classic Belgian dishes like mussels and Flemish stew too if you're in town!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's a brief rundown of sights, so I don't keep rambling on...
Town Hall in the Grand Place
Church of Our Lady of Victories at the Sablon
Law Court of Brussels ft a Ferris Wheel
EU Parliament
Parc du Cinquantenaire with a fake Brandenburg Gate
+ more churches and parks (I make too many lists so if you really want the full rundown feel free to contact me)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
PS: if you ever go, don't be surprised at all the motifs to the Manneken Pis. I have absolutely zero clue as to what it means, but all the souvenir shops were hyper focused on this pissing statue 😂 (they even had a female version and a dog one too)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our program is planning a trip into the countryside next week to do a digital detox which I think will be a great break especially after my 2 exams...
Until next time,

Maison Dandoy & Brussels Beer Project Tough Cookie Speculoos Stout (Picked up at Maison Dandoy in Brussels). A 3 of 4. Smells of speculoos and a pretty standard roast and not-too-sweet malt. Drinks much the same in the body with some subtle cookie-like presence and some nice spice notes and a pretty standard dry stout body. Not over-the-top, which I appreciate, and quite good.

Belgium Day 1
The morning was simultaneously rough and smooth at the same time. I only got about 30 minutes of sleep the night before so I was running on fumes but I somehow made my way to St Pancras International for my morning train into Brussels.
Tumblr media
St Pancras is so peaceful in the early morning. It’s almost surreal.
I manage through the train ride, into the city, checked into my hostel at Brxxl 5 City Centre Hostel, and was ready to ACTUALLY start my Brussels exploration day. Stop #1 is the famous: Manneken Pis.
Tumblr media
I’m not winking. I’m just so tired that opening my eyes all the way would put me into an awakeness level that I just wanted ready for.
Along my tourist route for the day, I made sure to nestle in a mini walking tour of several chocolate shops since I wouldn’t have time for a proper guided chocolate tour of my own. Stop #1 was Rudolf Braun where I picked up a bar of Dark Orange & Almonds chocolate. From there I headed over to Stop #2 of my mini chocolate tour: Choco-story, a chocolate museum. The museum is quite small and really peaceful since it was just a random Monday. They provide a self-guided walking tour that gives you some information on cacao, the history of chocolate making, etc. For such a small museum I really enjoyed it. It only took about an hour and it had some really interesting information and they incorporated some samplings and even some live demonstrations toward the end of the museum route.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My favorite part of the Chocostory tour was definitely the live demonstrations at the end when a chocolate master demonstrated the process and gave us some fresh made Hazelnut w/ Speculoos Pralines and Coffee Pralines.
Right nearby the museum was Stop #3 of my self-designed chocolate tour: Planete Chocolate. Picked up a few goodies there and then went to my first non chocolate food stop of the day: Maison Dandoy where I got to try a fluffy and delicate Brussels-Style Waffle along with their world famous Speculoos.
Tumblr media
Love watching batch after batch of waffles getting churned out in this tiny shop.
My next Brussels stop was the Grand Palace/Grote Markt. This is a small square and you can easily see the whole thing from the center but it is so ornate, you can’t help but be lost in it for a while.
Tumblr media
It was still pretty early on in the day but tourists were already beginning to pool here. A lot of the businesses weren’t open yet but the gorgeous buildings themselves are still worth a visit.
Just a few feet away from the Grand Palace was chocolate Stop #4: Chocolaterie Mary which is apparently one of King Philippe of Belgium’s favorite chocolatiers. I had to pick up one of the queen’s favorite chocolates too which was the sea salt caramel w/ pecan. Absolutely delicious! Though at this point I was feeling quite sugared out so I decided to stop for lunch at Ballekes, a small meatball shop just outside the central square.
Tumblr media
Pork and beef meatball w/ Lapin Sauce (onion, raisin, beer) w/ a side of Belgium Fries (and a heeping helping of mayo of course).
After lunch I walked up towards the Mont de Arts. It’s a gorgeous hill overlooking the city with a lovely garden. There were some sling chairs set up and I decided this would be an appropriate spot for a short nap.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A comfy spot for a little afternoon nap before I continue with my day.
After a few minutes of shut eye I continued my journey towards the Palais de Bruxelles. Unfortunately they were closed so this was just a quick pass by.
Tumblr media
Exterior of the Palais de Bruxelles
Finally finishing up the last leg of my tour, I passed through the Parc de Pruxelles for a zen afternoon stroll before stopping by the St. Michael and St. Gudual Cathedral and eventually towards the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert.
Tumblr media
The glazed ceilings of the shopping arcade are absolutely mesmerizing.
From the gallery I made my final two chocolate stops: Stop #5 at Neuhaus Chocolates and Stop #6 at Leonidas. And with that. I ended my very chocolate (and sugar) filled day.
Tumblr media
Some of these were a snack for later but you bet I ate way more sugar in one day than I should have.
I was exhausted and headed back into my hostel. After some time relaxing, I made a new friend named Lukas and we decided to grab dinner together. We wandered the streets and eventually decided on a spot called Brasserie de la Bourse for dinner.
Tumblr media
Had to get me a piping plate of Flemish Stew and of course more Belgium Fries.
To end the night, Lukas and I head over to the Delirium Cafe for a drink. The beer hall is absolutely massive. Apparently this was a slow night according to Lukas but even then we had to fight some crowds just to get a drink. But they really have such a stellar selection of brews on tap that it’s worth the hassle.
Tumblr media
Just a small peak at what the bar setup at Delirium looks like.
The night ends, not too unreasonably late, back at the hostel where Lukas and I share a couple bottled beers before I head to bed. All in all, not a bad day for 30 minutes of sleep.

Week 7: A lot more eating!!!
Heelloooo!
Good news, we passed our first midterm abroad :) The semester is still not over but that is a weight off my shoulder. In the European education system, there are usually two big tests or projects that determine our semester GPA as opposed to the various assignments, projects, and exams that Michigan usually gives. This makes each exam higher stakes but also until we have exams or projects, we have little academic responsibilities other than showing up to class, which is very nice.
To celebrate my passing the test, we splurged a little and went to a high-end Japanese restaurant, called Yami Sushi, for a feast. I ordered a Tonkatsu and it was so crispy and juicy. 10/10 would recommend it and would be coming back!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prague is filled with so many good eats that I just haven’t had the time to explore yet but I’m going to start making it a goal to try new places. Everything is also so reasonably priced that cooking at home isn’t much cheaper than eating a nice meal outside. Plus, it gives us time to bond with our peers outside of school, which is always nice.
We also had another IFSA bonding event. This time was a movie night in a private theater! The movie Masaryk, it portrays the difficult fate of the Czechoslovak Republic in the 1940s, which would’ve been a cool experience to learn more about the culture and background of our temporary home.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, the theater wasn’t able to align the subtitles and sound so we weren’t able to watch it but it was still interesting to experience a Czech theater. The rooms were a lot smaller and felt a lot homier than in American movie theaters. There was also no popcorn, which was so disappointing :(
You should know what happens now, another travel day! As soon as we landed, we were greeted by a full rainbow, the first one I’d ever seen!!!
Tumblr media
Then, we were off to the city of Brussels, a city of not brussels sprouts but fries, waffles, and chocolates (definitely not complaining) This trip was very much a reset trip. We spent it sleeping in and eating, which was very much needed after weeks on end of traveling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had the best waffles of my life this weekend at Maison Dandoy. It was so fluffy and crispy and I’m literally still thinking about them :(
Next week is a lot of due dates for projects and assignments and I can’t wait for it to be over haha. Bye!
