XVI. THE TOWER

I am the tower being destroyed and the lightning destroying the tower. I am the crumbling hierarchy and the revolution. I am upheaval itself, and I’m breaking out.

i was invited by my friend duy to join in on a tarot-themed photo project to recreate the major arcana cards. i chose the tower mostly because i had an immediate vision of a figure who was both the tower itself and breaking free of it even as destruction burned from within, and the more research i did into various depictions of this card, the more i felt like there was power to be embraced i upheaval, even as most people view the tower entirely as an ill omen. links and the rest of the pieces under the cut!

My ADHD creative juices are flowing, appropriately at 4am, and I just daydreamt of a means to meld my two loves of fandom and spirituality: hear me out.

I make a rad ass cosplay of Clawneck, and get a spot at a con. I set up a tent with little decorations of the shiny moons and stars with (fake) candles everywhere, just like Clawneck’s tent. If I really feel like being unreasonable about this, I could make a COTL themed tarot deck (tbh I probably would just use my regular tarot cards and sell prints of COTL themed cards (probably my own designs) that are based off the major arcana. Like, if a reading with someone revealed that they need more patience I would give them the temperance card. Maybe with a channeled piece of wisdom on back to make it unique to each person. I’m a wood carver. I could make little moon and star earrings and paint them gold. Have a book on a podium nearby with descriptions of the cards and on the other side have it be a sort of “pick your random card to aid you on your crusade” make game accurate camellias and real crystals for sale to decorate the space like his camp. Not to make it sound all business-y but that sounds like so much fun to me, I think I would finally enjoy my work 😅. I don’t know about legalities and copyrights I’m just a dreamer lol.

Welcome to Fool on the Hill: A Cyberpunk 2077 Tarot Prompt Event. This event will run from July 3 to October 27.

How It Works:

Participants will each be given a random three card spread, with one card being from the major arcana (aka the murals found in the in-game quest "Fool on the Hill") and the remaining two being from the minor arcana (seen briefly in Phantom Liberty). Meanings will be attached.

These three cards are your prompt. You may interpret cards as upright or reversed, depending on the story you would like to tell.

Submissions DO NOT have to strictly adhere to the tarot definitions, nor to how the cards are used by the game (eg, the Fool referring to V). You may draw inspiration from the meaning of the cards, the words or art on the cards, or anything else about them.

Submissions will be posted to the event collection on Archive of Our Own, as well as promoted on this Tumblr. Participants may also make their own posts once reveals have happened; they will be reblogged here.

Rules:

Regarding submission length: if writing a fic, 3000 word minimum. If creating virtual photography, 3 images minimum. If creating an edit or a video, 30 second minimum.

Any pairings, characters, alternate universes, etc are welcome, so long as you feel they apply to your prompt.

Submissions need to by completed and submitted to the ao3 collection by October 27, 2024.

Okay okay, I think I have one.

Anime blorbos are the major arcana assigned based on personality, and all stay out while drawing the rest of the deck. During this process, you must cosplay as 1 (one) of the blorbos. The deck is evenly split (as much as possible) among the blorbos in whatever manner/order you feel like. Minor arcana type of the first card drawn determines what side of the argument they're on the following way, and specific card states why:

- Cups: In agreement with you, or otherwise generally self-care focused

- Wands: There should be some form of negotiating between your ideas and the opposing position

- Swords: You're a fucking idiot and you have a dumb dumb pea brain and dumb dumb pea brain ideas that are dumb you stupid dumb idiot

- Pentacles: fuck you, fuck this, this whole thing is stupid, everyone should just drop all of this, why are you the way you are

If the first card of your cosplay blorbo is Cups or Wands, you may proceed. If it is Sword or Pentacle, you must, in full cosplay, would a foam katana and fight a thoughtform of your blorbo in public in Highlander fashion. If you win, you may proceed. If the blorbo wins, you must give up your sinful ways.

Assuming you are able to continue, The rest of the cards are read sequentially row-by-row, blorbo-by-blorbo, in the form of a discussion/argument between the blorbos (Left-to-right if you're reading traditional, Right-to-left if you're reading Full Weeb Mode). You must then determine the winner of the argument.

I am very interested to see how assigned personality, favoritism, and resentment from cards that feel like they're not being properly listened to will affect readings over time. I imagine it playing out like a teen drama about a toxic friend group who all pretend to get along because they're forced to see each other on the daily but not-so-secretly hate each other to varying degrees.

now... i do not have cosplay things so perhaps a viable alternative is to simply assume the visage of the character in an astral space and carry out astral combat, etc?
