So this whole "drums go down first","lay down the beat first" is complete BS in my book. A drum kit has lows,mids, and high tons. There for we can step on anybodies toes if we choose to. So if you want to write a song with everything flowing nicely together wouldn't it make sense to do the more "delicate" things such as Vocals and whatever instrument is leading the melody first!? Then once "the story" is establish the drums will ether enforce what's being done, back it up, fill in the blank spaces or In the rare occasion do something completely different. While we as drummers may be playing the melody in our head as we make the beat it still won't sound like it to the listener till we are able to mold and meld with the melody its self. If you want a good track with all the right parts (drum wise) then write them last so the musician (drummer in this case) knows where all the boundaries are so we can stay in them and also break out when needed.
