It's brew day, which means all our brew shit is in the house instead of the garage.

This made it easier to create an inventory of the malts we have on hand for brewing, and while I was at it I updated the inventory for our hops! I've included the colour the malts produce and the uses (aroma or bittering) for the hops and put in flavour notes for both. It's now so organized! We can see what we have without going to the garage and moving a bunch of stuff.

Also all our malts are now in one bucket (in their separate bags). It will be so much easier to deal with now.

We have less than 10 minutes left on the boil, so I'm going to order pizza.

Sweet Retreat, 846 Blossom Hill Rd, Suite d, San Jose, CA 95123

Fro-yo girl here. It’s been a long time since I’ve had Sweet Retreat – maybe ten years? It was something that I had a few times in the early years of froyo (around 2005 – 2010). Sweet Retreat used to have multiple locations in the Bay Area, including a few in San Jose, one in Los Gatos and one in Morgan Hill. I think this is the last one standing. After the fire destroyed the Sweet Retreat shop at Cahalan Square in San Jose, the owners moved to this strip mall on Blossom Hill Rd.

The shop feels small since there is no indoor seating and the room is dominated by three large freezers with tubs of ice cream. The hard scoop ice cream is from San Jose’s Treat Ice Cream. A mini scoop is $5.75. The menu also includes hand-packed pints, sundaes, shakes, malts, floats, freezes, and soft serve mix-in style yogurt. For the yogurt, you pick your size and the mix-ins (candies, fruit, nuts, cookies, etc.)

Yogurt prices: Mini $7.25 + $1.80 for one mix-in, Small ($7.90), Large ($10.75), and quarts

Yogurt portions are generous. The yogur4t is mixed to order.

Small strawberry yogurt ($7.90 + 2): I wish I had ordered a mini because the small was like a large. Luckily, the froyo was really good. They use Treat Ice Cream’s tart vanilla froyo base mixed with frozen strawberries. It’s nice and tangy, thick, smooth, and creamy. There’s a bit of texture from the strawberry seeds, and the use of real fruit also makes it taste natural. It does seem crazy expensive though – almost $10 for a small/large froyo.

Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream, 3405 E Foothill Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91107

On a hot summer night, Handel’s seems to be the most popular place to be in East Pasadena/Hastings Ranch.

Handel’s, which was founded in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1945, offers about 50 flavors of ice cream (in a dish or on a cone), milkshakes, sundaes, malts, floats, pops, ice cream sandwiches, chocolate covered bananas, etc. They make their own waffle cones and bowls. A single scoop is $5.75. the 4 scoop sampler ($7.50) is a popuar choice. Note, they don’t offer any samples.

The ice cream is made at each shop. Most of their flavors have inclusions like nuts, cookies, chocolate chips, chocolate chunks, etc. They’re more indulgent. I didn’t see that many flavors that appealed to me.

Chocolate chip ice cream ($5.75, small): The scoop was larger than average. The texture was soft and stickier than I’m used to and the ice cream was extra sweet. The chips were larger pieces of chocolate (I wouldn’t call them chips).

The shop looks like an ice cream stand. You walk up to the window and order. There is no indoor seating. Easy strip mall parking.

can we just talk about how august is one of the most well-written antagonist characters in modern media? he’s done some unforgivable things but you still see him as human. he’s not just an evil person to make the storyline more interesting, he’s so much more complex than that. from a writer’s perspective i absolutely love his character and his storyline so much. also props to malte gårdinger for playing him so well. wow. just. wow.
