Warning: mentions of domestic abuse & child abuse.
One thing I have never been on board with is the cliche, tired trope of "Maratelle Hux was the cruel and wicked stepmother". I honestly think it is fairly probable that Brendol was abusing her too, considering he 1. Cheated on Maratelle with Armitage’s birth mother & who knows who else. 2. Is a cruel and bigoted man with poor morals as portrayed in three novels & a comic. 3. Armitage’s birth mother is always referred to as a "kitchen woman" or something demeaning. ( Which honestly makes me wonder if Armitage’s conception was even consensual ). I think that makes pretty obvious that Brendol & his friends are not respectful to women. 4. Brendol did not seem concerned that he left his wife behind in a war zone when he fled Arkanis with Armitage.
Then there is the fact that Brendol, a man who greatly values his own reputation, admitted to having a bastard son. Considering his power and status in comparison Armitage’s birth mother lack of power & status, he probably could have silenced her/paid her off and passed Armitage as his own son. Unless Maratelle is unable to bear children or she is a POC and it's obvious that Armitage isn't her child.
I personally like to headcanon Maratelle as a woman who was unable to conceive but found joy in motherhood despite the terrible way she came about raising this child. She did her best to shield Armitage from Brendol’s violence & loved him like he was her own son. But she did end up neglecting him at times, as well, because of her depression due to Brendol’s cruel treatmentof them both. I'm not sure if she ever saw Armitage again after Brendol & the bounty hunter took him from Arkanis when he was five. But I bet she tried her hardest to find him.
I also imagine Maratelle taking little Armitage down to the kitchens in the Academy to see his birth mother. It was a secret little ritual that Brendol didn't know about.
Let Armitage Hux have two great moms that were taken from him. Let that be the reason he became cold, closed off & afraid to love.

Two Gals being more than Pals
Done for the SW Rare Pairs 2020 exchange to challenge myself to not always draw the same two people (y’all know which ones LOL)
Apparently the “dainty waifu” aesthetic that gets prescribed onto Armitages mom doesn’t sit that well with me, I think her becoming some level of fat is just what happens to a woman in her 50′s who gave birth to and nursed a child.
Maratelle (I like to think some sort of Manager/CEO/economy lawyer) probably gets her suit at the same place that designs the uniforms for the First Order LOL

➣ empire roots.
dopheld mitaka was born to an ex-imperial death trooper and an imperial academy engineering professor on the planet, arkanis, in the year 1 aby. his parents taught him to be loyal to the empire at a young age. his family quickly pledged themselves to the first order when it was created. mitaka grew up hearing stories of the cities the rebels destroyed and the lives they took. his family lost many members during the first galactic war. young dopheld obediently followed the career path his parents wished for him to have in the first order. his mother && father convinced him that the first order’s quest was the only way to have true peace in the galaxy.
➣ armitage hux. ( @acharnemcnt )
mitaka grew up with armitage hux on arkanis as an infant. his are family friends of the huxes through armitage’s step-mother, maratelle hux. little dopheld looked up to his best friend. he would have spent every moment with armitage if he mom and dad allowed him. the two little boys would play game and listen to stories about the empire. when mitaka was four, armitage and his father were mysteriously taken away from arkanis. dopheld cried for almost a month. armitage’s step mother was left behind && she ended up moving in with the mitaka family until she was reunited with her husband && son. mitaka finally saw armitage again when he was eleven and hux was twelve. they rekindled their friendship for a short time prior to armitage leaving for the first order academy. hux was more quiet and solemn then mitaka remembered him. something had changed inside of him. but it wasn’t enough to make dopheld give up hope in his friend. he stood by him because he still saw pieces of the smart and creative armtiage he knew. when dopheld graduated the academy he followed armitage as the younger hux climbed the latter to success. he took a position under hux on the finalizer. time took its toll on them both. there were times that dopheld though he would lose is friend to the pressure that snoke put on him but he stays loyal and tries to cling onto the little boy he knew on arkanis.

Dirty Laundry
930 words, kylux, modern au
“Okay, look. No,” Rey said, waving a canape in Kylo’s face.
“Manners,” Kylo said.
Rey rolled her eyes at him and stuffed the whole thing in her mouth. “Who are you to lecture me about manners,” she half-said, half-chewed, “when you’re the one who wants to proposition a guy whose dad just died?”
Kylo laid his knife and fork down elegantly, because unlike his half-sister, he was not a savage. “Don’t talk with your mouth full.”
It took Rey a moment to finish the bite. After she swallowed she went straight for Kylo’s wine glass; as this was her third attempt, he expected it this time and pulled it out of her reach. “You know our moms will both kill me if you even have a sip, Rey. You’re nineteen.”
“But Dad wouldn’t care, and I’m going to his place after this.”
Kylo let out the sort of soul-weary sigh that up until a few weeks ago, he would never have expected to hear from himself. At least not until he was an old man. He wasn’t even thirty yet. “Can you try to be civilized?” he asked quietly. “There are cameras everywhere.”
“I can’t believe you grew up like this.”
“Well, I can believe you didn’t,” Kylo grumbled. He glanced up to the dais, where his mother was about to give her prepared statement. Hopefully most of the cameras would be on her, and the rest on Senator Hux’s family, but he was sure a few would be spared for Senator Organa’s family, given the recent scandalous revelation of Rey’s existence. The vultures loved shit like that.
The ballroom quieted as Kylo’s mother began to speak. She and Senator Hux had not been friends. They’d worked together on a few bipartisan initiatives, but only begrudgingly. Leia had lost all respect for him after President Snoke’s election, said he might have been a hero in the past, but he was all talk now. She’d had to tone down the rhetoric when he fell ill. Now he was dead, and she had to toe the line between angering Hux’s strident fans and alienating those in her own base who saw him as a fraud. This little speech, one of many given at the funeral reception, was a calculated effort to highlight the things she had worked with Hux to accomplish while planting the seeds for future initiatives. Kylo had helped her write it, watched her practice.
Leia and Kylo both understood politics. The problem was, neither of them truly had the patience for it. Leia had managed to fake it for decades, but it had taken a toll on her family, and Kylo’s father Han had ended up leaving.
If he’d actually divorced Leia instead of just running away like a coward, Rey’s existence wouldn’t be controversial.
Kylo’s eyes trailed away from his mother and down to the table where Senator Hux’s family was seated. His widow, Maratelle, was watching Leia hawkishly, as if waiting for a verbal misstep. His son, Armitage, was staring at the table.
This evening was Kylo’s first time seeing the man in person. He was five years older than Kylo, with vibrant red hair slicked back in a severe style that accented his sharp cheekbones. Kylo had always thought he looked distinctive in the photos and news clips he’d seen, but nothing had prepared him for seeing him in person, standing just a few feet away from those golden eyelashes, those murky eyes, those pink lips, that long, lean body.
Rey had caught him staring, and he’d foolishly thought they might have a bonding moment, so he’d told her what he was thinking.
Perhaps he was a bit too straightforward about it. She was only nineteen.
In any case, Armitage didn’t seem aware of Kylo’s existence. And, unfortunately, Rey was right. Armitage was in mourning. Now was probably the worst time to approach.
But Kylo would remember. He’d make plans. He’d find Armitage again, once a reasonable amount of time had passed, and---
Armitage looked up suddenly, locking eyes with Kylo. Kylo wanted to look away, but found he couldn’t. The corners of Armitage’s lips twitched upward. He crooked a finger, curling it in an obvious come here gesture, and then he stood up from the table and walked away, right in the middle of Leia’s eulogy.
Plates and silverware clattered as Kylo bolted up from his seat to follow. He was a few steps away when he remembered Rey, but when he glanced over his shoulder she’d already downed half his wine. She was a lost cause. Kylo spun back just in time to see Armitage leaving the ballroom through a grand pair of double doors.
Kylo rushed out into the hallway. As soon as he was through the doors, a hand curled itself into his lapel and yanked him to the side; he stumbled, and Armitage spun him so that his back hit the wall, hard.
He blinked, Armitage’s face coming into focus mere inches from his own. “Hello,” Armitage said, and Kylo could feel the warmth of his breath.
“Hi,” Kylo said. Armitage was holding him by the lapels, pressing him against the wall. But his hands were free, so he planted them on Armitage’s hips, held him firmly in place.
“Did you need something?” Armitage asked, playful but breathless.
“Yeah,” Kylo said.
And that was what led to Kylo Ren, son of Senator Leia Organa, and Armitage Hux, son of the late Senator Brendol Hux, being discovered in a coat closet by a CNN crew.
Rey never let Kylo live it down.

Popular belief is that Armitage's mom is the best thing that could've happened to him. Turns out that's not the case. After the defeat of the FO Hux was captured and is held in prison during trial or awaiting execution. He's been in prison for several months, alone but for the guards. The one day he gets to leave his cell is on account of a visitor, his only visitor. He's brought into a room where a woman is seated at a large table. He's seated across from her, hoping that it is who he thinks it
is. It is his mom and she looks pleased to see him, until hergaze hardens. She's only here to say goodbye and good riddance to the monstershe sired. Of course he would take after his father. She spends the whole timetalking, belittling him and destroying every ideal he had of her. She neverwanted to be raped, was she expected to raise the son of a monster? She hadhoped maybe she could manipulate Brendol to marry her since she was carryinghis son but no, he was faithful to Maratelle.
No reason to keep him, and thank the force for that. Havinga murderer for a son. Killed his own father, killed innocents for game. Shespares no mercy and he's breaking down on the inside but his gaze remains ascold as hers. He tries to request to leave for his cell but she snaps."I'm not done with you boy!" She has stood with him and slaps himhard against the face. Mocks him for running away from his mother. What a weakman.
No wonder he had to hide behind a weapon. His only retort, for all her insults, is "maybe if I had better role models I could'veturned out the way you wanted me too. But you never provided me with one. Sowho's to blame?" Once he's back in his cell he's in the deepest well ofdespair, wanting to sob but instead silently crying. No one truly ever lovedhim and no one will miss him when he's gone.
Oh, that sound? It’s my heart breaking.

Family Therapy Sessions
(this is from the week 10 Family theme prompt of “family therapy sessions” – it’s a little long, but it just ran away with me!)
“Why are we here listening to this jumped-up little woman?”
Several pairs of eyes darted to Brendol Hux. Those of the bored-looking and rather patrician woman next to him were the last to reach him, but she was the first to speak.
“Now, Bren. DMAS,” she said, drawing each syllable out. Dee-emm-ayy-ess. Don’t Make A Scene.
He folded his arms more tightly across his belly. “Don’t you bloody start,” he hissed. “I’ll make a scene if I feel like it. Won’t match the scene my son and that bloody lot have come up with but…”
He wilted somewhat under Ms Kanata’s piercing, bulbous gaze. “Are you with us, Commandant Hux?” she asked, pointedly.
“Yes, of course. Of course.”
“Good.” Ms Kanata looked around the group with an encouraging smile. “I need you all to be present and paying attention during the session. That way we will hear each other. We will learn from each other.”
Hux père and Hux fils both rolled their eyes. On the opposite side of the circle, Han Solo and Leia Organa both exhaled audibly.
“Now,” Ms Kanata continued, “Mr Solo had the talking stick, and then he gave it back to me. So would anybody like to speak? Who would have the talking stick?”
Silence greeted her.
“It doesn’t bite.”
More silence.
“Armitage?”
“Oh, fucking hell,” he muttered.
“Language,” grumbled his father. His stepmother sucked on an invisible lemon.
“Yes, I’ll have the bloody talking stick, although what good it does us., I don’t know.”
Ms Kanata cut him off, ironically, by handing him the talking stick. “Take it,” she ordered.
“Alright. Well. All I wanted to say is that it’s a bit much to expect Kylo and I to have a, whatever Ms Kanata called it last session, a ‘healthy communication style’, when…”
One of Brendol Hux’s eyes was wrenched into an angry squint and the other was close to popping out.
“… when the Organa-Solos have hardly given poor Kylo the best starting point.”
“Hey!” said Han, arm indignantly outstretched.
Ms Kanata turned on him. “No stick!”
Han made a great show of putting his hands together in his lap like a good little boy.
“That’s all I wanted to say,” Armitage said. “We’re all the product of our environment and I do try to provide a good environment for my stormtrooper cadets…”
Leia Organa leapt to her feet. “They are SLAVES! How DARE you!”
“Oh, the princess gets to talk without the stick,” muttered Han.
“They’re soldiers, actually, and I do try to…”
“I know what you do. You treat human beings like droids and attempt to program them with no thought of their dignity; how dare you claim to provide a good environment?”
“Oh dear,” said a tinny voice from the edge of the circle.
“Threepio actually is a droid, mom, maybe you should listen to him.”
“I NEVER HAD HIM REPROGRAMMED, THAT WAS YOUR PRECIOUS DARTH VADER.”
“Your father!”
“Yes, and he was wrong, and these… people are wrong. I’ve listened to what former stormtroopers have told me,” she said, warming to her topic and sounding once again like the senator she had been in her younger days. “I’ve listened to Major Finn, with great interest.”
Kylo and Armitage rolled their eyes.
Leia continued. “You STOLE that young man from his parents when he was a little child.”
“That wasn’t me,” Armitage yelled, making use of the seemingly redundant talking stick again. “That was him!” He pointed to his father, who took the opportunity to boost his ego in his own defence.
“I sourced extremely capable candidates for my program. A pity that my son has seen fit to interfere in my life’s work just so that he can call it his own, but…”
“My training program produces far better soldiers than it ever did in your time. They are competent, well-rounded people, thanks to our precision program of personal development.”
“Ah, bantha shit,” interrupted Han Solo. “Personal development, my ass. If they come out good the other end, they’d have turned out fine no matter what.”
“That’s your excuse for everything, Dad. It’d have turned out fine no matter what, so why bother lifting a finger in the first place.”
Ms Kanata gestured at Armitage, who willingly gave the talking stick to Kylo.
Han sat back in his seat and folded his arms. “OK, Ben, let’s have it. Let’s have you tell me what a shit dad I am. Again.”
“It’s not that, it’s just… yes I’ve turned out fine…” At this, Maratelle Hux barely disguised a snort of laughter, and Kylo at least pretended not to notice. “Despite you, not because of you. Because you didn’t care.”
Han looked desolate. “That’s not true, Ben.”
“How was I to know?”
“If you dare say ‘I’m not a mind-reader’ I swear to the maker, I will lose what little remains of my shit,” Han muttered.
“THAT’S NOT HOW THE FORCE WORKS. Aaaagh! Why do you have to be so obtuse?” Kylo closed his eyes and took some deep breaths. “Nobody wanted me around. Nobody wanted to listen.”
“Ben, we always…”
“No, don’t start, mom. Don’t start with how you wanted to listen so much that you were always asking questions. That was the problem. Constant interrogation – did you try your meditation today? are you having trouble at school? – how was I supposed to fucking live?”
Armitage cleared his throat and Kylo passed him the talking stick without looking at him. “Kylo darling,” he said, patting him on the arm, “not to be funny, but, you do remember what your main job is on board our ship?”
Kylo grunted at him from under a curtain of hair.
“It is, not to put too fine a point on it, perhaps not constant, but, interrogation. That is what you do. And I have to say we’re all very grateful for the intel you extract.”
“Well, isn’t that ironic,” Kylo growled. “Isn’t that FUCKING IRONIC.”
“Why in the galaxy are we listening to this nonsense?” muttered Brendol Hux. “Why in the galaxy does the Supreme Leader let that boy carry on that way?”
A knock on the door took everyone’s attention. Ms Kanata sprung to her feet and marched purposefully to answer it.
“Ah! Come in, come in! We have been missing you.”
A bearded man in long robes entered, clutching several disposable cups of caf.
“Sorry to be late. Rey’s training session over ran a little.”
“Her!” Kylo yelled, pointing at Luke without looking at him. “HER! The 800 kg happabore in the room!”
“Oh dear, I hardly think…”
“Shut up, Threepio.”
“Little Miss Perfect, why isn’t she here, the daughter you always wanted,” Kylo ranted, gesturing at his parents. “The perfect apprentice you always wanted,” and he pointed at Luke again. “She even talks like a nice Imperial girl, which would suit you down to the ground,” and he threw a dismissive gesture at the elder Huxes.
“Should hardly think she’s your type, boy,” Brendol Hux mumbled.
“Not in the least,” Armitage sniffed. “I’m quite happy with my man and the rest of you can quite honestly step out of an airlock for all I care.”
“Ah!” beamed Ms Kanata. “Here is some progress! Armitage, would you like to say that directly to Kylo? With some eye contact?”
“I’d rather not.”
“Look into the eyes! They are your window. Direct to the soul.”
Han sighed. “Usually I’ve had a beer and a plate of sweet potato fries before Maz gets into the whole… eyes thing,” he muttered.
Armitage took a deep breath. “Alright then. Kylo, I’ve made my choice and I chose you and that’s it. None of the rest of it matters, not the Jedi girl, or the Supreme Leader, or this sorry lot, who can sod off and sort out their own problems on their own time.”
Kylo bit his lip and squeezed Armitage’s hand. “Thank you,” he said in an uncharacteristically small voice.
“There,” said Armitage, and leant in to give him the very quickest of pecks on the cheek.
“Oh, that is nice,” declared Threepio.
Maratelle Hux gave her husband a very pointed look indeed.

Inspired by this post and the conversation I had with @nomourners-nofuneral
Obligatory transcript of me horrible claw: Hux: *muttering under his breath* “Future husband say what.” Mitaka: “What?” Admiral Serana Tarkin: “HEY!! STOP FLIRTING WITH MY OFFICERS!!!”
Yes, my very much talked about (talked about by me) OC FINALLY has got a face! ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ (Why the hell is everyone in the FO so fucking tall? OTL) Apparently a main factor in rising among the FO ranks is the power of your eyebrow game... She’s Hux “cousin”; under quotation marks because they are not related by blood because Maratelle isn’t actually Armitages mom. (That she divorced Brendol to marry Armitages mom is another story altogether...) Why she yelling and doing essentially this:
Tumblr media
That’s her mother’s side, she really IS Maratelles niece. Maratelle Hux, nee Jeschek, (her older sister Amalia married the son of our all-loved Wilhuff) comes from a long line of lawyers and attorneys.
Serana is also very protective of her lot, especially such a cutie-pie such as Mitaka.

Now I'm really interested in the way Brendols, Moiras and Maratelles relationship with Armitage changes over the years. And did Maratelle actually divorce Brendol? Who actually got legal custody of Armitage? Also the mentor-mentee relationship between Armitage and Rae Sloane is hella interesting, while she might not exactly act overly "motherly" towards him, I guess she does guide him more towards being his own person, rather than being a Brendol 2.0 of some sort.
Ok, but even if Brendol just took Armitage with him (or Armitage just got taken alongside with him by decree of the council or whoever decided that), he essentially lost Armitage to Rae. (In a fist fight if I recall that one right XD)
Not actually sure if you are asking about my story or THE story, the canon one. The canon story could happen in whatever way it pleases. But I guess you mean my story since in this case “Moira” refers specifically to my character, not “the Hux’s mom character”.
I wish I could just direct you to a longfic I’ve written and say it’s all explained there but my boring ass hasn’t actually put in the work for that.
So… *waves arms helplessly* come back in 50 years when my useless epic fanfic saga is finally done?
I think I’ve already said everything I can about how I feel re: Sloane + Armitage but TL;DR she’s not canonically his mentor but she could be if a canon writer decides to do that. But if they did do that I wouldn’t like it. But that doesn’t mean you can’t.

I wish you'd write a fic where Hux takes Kylo home to meet his parents, and Kylo is fully expecting an uptight Hux Sr, but nope, Brendol died a while ago, and didn't do much parenting anyway, and Kylo faces parents much more impressive (and terrifying): Maratelle and Hux's biological mother who married after Brendol died and made Armitage into the terror he is. And for once, Kylo Ren truly knows fear as he is cross examined, weighed and judged by Armitage Hux's mothers.
NONNY *GRABS YOUR FACE* I FUCKING LOVE THIS!!! OMG I’VE WANTED THIS SINCE THE BOOK CAME OUT AND OOOOH MY GODS...
They’re terrifyingly elegant, poised and perfect. Since they’ve both gone grey gracefully Kylo isn’t entirely sure which one is the bio-mom because they both have mannerisms he associates with Hux.

You know, I was looking at all the Harry Potter gifs on my board and I just thought about Hux (yeah I know) but what if his biological mother was still alive? After his father's death & claiming a generals title, he did everything to find her. She's living life at the fullest thanks to her son, so on holidays or time where he could spend, they do it together. He always gets gifts to & from her. Point is, I want Hux in homemade sweaters, having mom's cookies, & good chats with her. Cute things.
Those all sound like wonderful things! …I had a headcanon once that Hux’s biological mother and Maratelle Hux ran away together after Brendol took Armitage away during the siege of Arkanis, and both ladies fell in love with each other and made a good & happy life for themsleves on another planet! So, maybe Hux has two mothers now who knit him and Kylo matching sweaters and send them cookies and gifts in the space-mail!

Idk if non force sensitive people can become force ghosts in canon but imagine hux's mom talking to Ren while he dreams or meditates
I was sorta leaning towards that in the drabble I wrote yesterday! The female voice that Kylo heard whispering him to go home to Hux was meant to be Hux’s mother! His real mother, not Maratelle. A kitchen woman with bright red hair and the saddest eyes that Kylo has ever seen, a soft voice to match.
She appears to Kylo when Hux is on his mind; when he’s worried about the General’s health or when he’s longing for him. The woman always tells him what Armitage needs, whether that be a hug or a warm meal, she tells him of the struggles that her son has endured underneath Brendol’s control.
Kylo can’t help but think of the man that Hux would’ve become if his mother had survived.

No rush w/ this prompt, but I love the idea of Hux taking Kylo back to Arkanis to meet his father and "mother" (not his bio mom, obviously) and it doesn't go well, Brendol doesn't like Kylo and sees him as just another sign of his son's weakness
this got quite long, sorry!
Astheir shuttle descends through the thick layers of grey cloud, Hux scowls.
Arkanislooks no different despite him having not visited his home planet since he leftfor active duty in the First Order. The same dull clouds, the same constantdrizzle of rain, even the same leering house that he’s meant to call home.
“Remindme again why we have to be here?” Kylo says, tugging uncomfortably at thecollar of his uniform.
Huxhuffs but smiles, standing in front of Kylo to smarten up his appearance. Hisgrey, standard-issue First Order uniform is tight across his body, particularlyaround his thighs, but they hadn’t time to complain. His knee-high boots arepristinely shiny, however, the same with his black leather gloves, though Hux triesnot to focus on them for too long, fearing his own rise in arousal. Kylo’s hairis tied up in a loose but high pony tail though loose strands fall free, tooshort to be pulled back. Hux makes a mental note to make him wear the uniformmore often.
“It’s…justa tradition I was brought up with,” Hux says, loosening Kylo’s collar forhim. “Bringing your fiancée home to introduce them to your parents is viewedas demonstrating capability to solidify your bloodline.”
“Havekids, you mean,” Kylo mutters.
“Yes.That’s what matters to them, to our traditions. Passing on one’s great name tothe youth of tomorrow, allowing them to continue yourfight.”
“And…why is the suit is necessary?”
Huxshrugs.
“Rememberwhat I told you about not mentioningthe fact that you’re a Force user. Or Snoke’s apprentice. My father has alwaysbeen wary of ‘your kind’ since Vader.I thought it’d be best just to play off the fact that you’re my co-commander. Ipresume you’re still okay with your new name?”
“CaptainSion Oles. I know,“ Kyloreplies, looking displeased.
Huxclicks his tongue. “Plus, you know how weakI get for a man in uniform.”
Kylomakes an amused hum and smiles, a small blush appearing on his cheeks. Huxcontinues smartening Kylo’s uniform, padding down the stubborn creases, brushing idle fluff from the grey fabric, but Kylo startles him by grabbing hiswrists.
“Iknow you don’t get along with your parents, Hux. It’s alright,” he says, brining Hux’s knuckles up to his lips to kiss.
Huxaverts his gaze to the floor for a moment and sighs.
“Mymother tolerates me, which is more than I ever thought she would do,considering I’m the product of one of my father’s drunken encounters with akitchen maid.”
Somehow, saying it aloud again brings a well of emotion to Hux’s eyes, as though itreaffirms his status as Brendol Hux’s bastard son, as though that’s all he’sever going to be.
“Hux!“
“Mm?”
Kylohuffs. “I said, we shouldprobably get going. If your father is anything like you, then being late isn’tgoing to sit well with him.”
“Oh.Right. Yes. Come along, Ren.”
It’sa short walk over to the Hux estate from their shuttle on the landing pad, andthe falling rain makes Hux slightly thankful of his greatcoat. He looks to hisleft, to where Kylo walks in perfect step beside him, and blushes at the sightof Kylo wearing an identical coat to Hux’s, albeit without the rank stripes onhis sleeves.
“Youlook…good,” Hux says as they step up onto the porch of the house–the mansion.
“Ilook ridiculous,” Kylo replies, looking down at himself for a moment before back up to meet Hux’s worried gaze.“But for you, Armitage, I’d wear rags.”
Hux smiles, cuppingKylo’s cheek to bring him down into a gentle kiss, one last good luck charm before Hux gives thedoorbell a push and the sound of the chime echoes loudly from inside the house. The two wait in silence. Hux feels sick from the apprehension, the not knowing of how his parents are goingto react to seeing him after so many years away…and with a fiancée, no less.
The sounds of high-heeled shoesapproaching the door startles Hux back to attention, his posture turningcompletely rigid at the mere sound. The black door opens slowly, and Huxswallows hard.
A woman, only slightly smaller than Hux,with flowing black hair and vivid red lipstick, stands proudly on the otherside of the door, her scowl lightening where her gaze sets on Hux.
“Oh! Tidge,” the woman says with asmile. “It’s so wonderful to have you visit us. Come in, come in.”
Hux merely smiles at her, a grimace if anything, as he and Kylo stepinto the house, rain dripping from their coats and onto the white marble floor.Hux, like he’s never been away, sheds his coat quickly and hangs it on thehooks next to the door, noting Kylo copy him almost straight away.
“Now, come here, my boy,” the womansays, holding her arms out, and Hux steps forward, embracing her with littleeffort. “It’s been a while since I’ve seen you. Your father tells me you’recommanding one of our grandest Star Destroyers now?”
“Co-commanding,”Hux replies, pulling away from the hug. “Mother, this is Captain Sion Oles. He’s my co-commander on the Finalizer…and my fiancée.”
“Whata handsome man you’ve found yourself, Tidge,” she says, outstretching her handtowards Kylo. “Maratelle Hux, Captain Oles.”
“Please,”Kylo says, flicking a piece of his dark hair from his face. “Call me Sion.”
Maratellegiggles. Hux rolls his eyes.
“Comealong, boys,” she says. “The Commandant will see you now.”
As Maratelle walks off expecting the two tofollow, Hux grabs Kylo for a moment, pulling him back.
“Thankyou,” he whispers, pecking Kylo’s cheek with a kiss before following hismother, knowing that lying about his identity is something that Kylo didn’thave to do. Hux sighs, rolling his shoulders. One down, one to go.
Commandant Hux is sat in a grandarmchair next to the roaring fireplace in their lounge, dressed in his officialuniform, reclining, a glass of brandy in his hand. His hair is considerably greyer–and shoter–than Hux remembers, though he’s thankful that his father’s hair no longer holds the ginger shimmer that his hair does.
“Armitage,” he says as his son enters,Kylo in tow, though he makes no move to get up.
“Father,” Hux greets, standing in frontof his father and salutes. “Sir. You have only grown nobler in my absence.”
Brendol laughs. “I do wish I could say the same to you. You’ve lost weight, boy.Shrunk a couple of inches by the looks of things too, or that may just be theimposing look that your friend hasthat dwarves you.”
Brendol outstretches his hand, curlinghis knuckles over and presenting Hux with his glorious golden ring on hismiddle finger, embellished with the Empire’s emblem in the centre. Hux kneelswithout hesitation, kissing the ring softly before rising again and taking aseat on the plush couch once his father has gestured him to do so.
“I…do believe that I may have unintentionallylost weight, sir, yes,” Hux mumbles, absently noting that Kylo has chosen tosit unbelievably close to him, their hips touching. He can smell the cologne that Kylo had practically doused himself withbefore they’d left the Finalizer, thescent intoxicating him.
“Mm. None of that now, boy. Tell me, whois this officer you’ve brought with you?”
“This is Captain Sion Oles, sir. My co-commander onboard the Finalizer. He’s my fiancée.”
Brendol coughs, and takes a heavy gulpfrom his glass.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, sir,” Kylosays with an awkward nod. “Hux has told me a great many things of your achievements.”
“I presume you’re going to disappoint meagain, Armitage, and inform me that you’ve no plans for offspring,”Brendol says, completely ignoring Kylo’s pleasantries.
Hux feels Kylo tense. Out of impulse,Hux reaches for Kylo’s hand, holding his fist.
“It’s not something we’ve talked about, sir, but with modern technology, I’m sure we could combine our DNA in anartificial womb to create a child—”
“Pah! It’d be defective, I’m sure,”Brendol laughs, wholly expecting Hux and Kylo to laugh along with him, but theystay silent.
’I’mgoing to throttle him,’ Kylo whispers into Hux’s mind, tone dripping withanger.
‘Notyet, Ren. Not yet.’
The rest of the day goes no better, withBrendol almost consistently makingsly jibes and mocking insults at Hux’s expense, his mother laughing along withher husband’s cruel jokes. But each time, Hux can almost feel more of Kylo’srestraint slipping away.
After dinner, the four gather in thedrawing room, a large selection of fine cheeses and biscuits layered on thetable with wine to accompany. Kylo sits skittishly on the couch next to Hux,whilst Maratelle and Brendol sit in their armchairs opposite them.
“Tell me more about yourself, Sion,”Brendol says, gulping at his wine. “I want to know as much as I can about theman who my only son deems worthyenough to take my great name.”
Kylo tries to keep his expression asneutral as possible, side-eying Hux worriedly.
‘Takehis great name?’ Kylo asks.
‘Hethinks you’ll take ‘Hux’ as a surname once we’re married,’ Hux retorts, sipping his wine.
But Brendol persists.
“Where were you raised? Which academydid you attend? What are your future goals for the First Order?”
Before Kylo even speaks, Hux can almostsense his hesitation.
“Uh,” Kylo murmurs, his mind blank fromanything but the truth.
“Sion doesn’t like personal questions, sir,” Hux interrupts, chuckling falsely. “He’s a private person. But trust me,sir. He’s the finest the Order has to offer.”
Brendol scowls. “Worthy enough to sireyour children?”
Hux slams his glass down on the table. “You’reobsessed with us having children, aren’t you?”
“Watch your mouth, boy,” Brendol growls, sitting forward, eyes locked with his son’s. “Remember, I could’ve cast you outlike the runt you were. You should begrateful that I’ve even allowed you back in this house after your failure ofStarkiller.”
Hux huffs and stands, fists clenched. “Iam the Starkiller. I’ve accomplished morenow than you have in your lifetime.”
“Howdare you!”
“When people think of a Hux, they’llthink of me. Not you. Never you.”
“Youson of a—”
And Brendol hurls his wine glassstraight in Hux’s direction, the liquid spilling from it as it moves. Huxflinches, turning away from the hurtling object in the hopes that it’ll lessenthe impact…but the hit never comes. Confused, he turns, seeing the glass—and thewine itself—frozen in mid-air, hovering.
Hux immediately looks to Kylo, seeinghim sat with his hand outstretched, fingers spread, eyes ablaze.
“What the—a Jedi!” Brendol exclaims as he stands, staggering backwards and awayfrom the supposed sorcery that’s in front of him.
“Worse,”Kylo says, his tone dark, as he stands. With his free hand, he grabs Hux’s andholds on tight, never breaking his fierce eye contact with Brendol. “My name isKylo Ren, Master of the Knights ofRen. And you, pig, will never be halfthe man that your son is.”
“K-Kylo Ren! The Supreme Leader’sapprentice? A Force-wielder!” Brendol fumes, his fat cheeks turning a deep shade of red, whilst Maratelle cowers behind herarmchair. “Armitage, you’re weaker than I ever could have imagined. Under thethumb of Snoke’s attack dog? Filth! AHux serves no one! You bastard child—gah!”
Brendol’s hands are suddenly grasping athis throat as thought trying to force the air back into his lungs, or trying topry away the invisible fingers that threaten to choke him out of his very lastbreath. Maratelle screams.
“Scum,”Kylo spits, clenching his fingers into a tight fist. “You’ll hold your tongue, unless you want me to rip it from your disgusting mouth, fierfek sleemo—”
“Ren. That’s enough.”
Hux lays a gentle hand on Kylo’strembling shoulder, as though releasing him from his angered trance. Asordered, Kylo drops his hold over Brendol, and the Commandant slumps to thefloor, coughing, his wife quick to his side.
“Come on, Kylo, we’re leaving,” Huxsays, giving his Knight’s hand a gentle tug before turning away, headingtowards the door, feeling as though he’s just conquered the most difficult ofbattles.
“You weak-willed boy! You’re no son of mine,” Brendol yells, throat hoarse.
“We cared for you, Tidge, we gave you ahome when we could’ve put you out on the streets!” Maratelle shouts, tone noticeablymore venomous than before. “Now, you’re poison! Just like your whore mother!”
Hux halts, feeling Kylo’s grip tightenon his hand. He turns slowly, standing tall before the cowering figures of thecouple he used to call his parents.
“You made me like this,” he says, leering down at them. “You. Made. Me.”
Saying nothing else, he turns away forthe last time, taking Kylo’s hand, and storms out, leaving the Hux estate in awreck, feeling no guilt or remorse for any of it. He feels free, almost; like a weight has been lifted from his shoulder, along with a newfound sense of belonging to his name.
“That went well,” Kylo says, swingingtheir hands between them playfully, bringing his free hand up to pull his hairout from the tieback.
“Indeed,” Hux agrees. “So. When do wemeet your parents?”
