Only a fool trifled with a witch. And here he was, trifling with one in about as enormous a way as was possible. ‘If she’s a witch, she should be able to protect herself,’ said a small dubious voice in his head. Could she? Could anyone, where their emotions were involved? Love was blind, and lovers blinder. Even witch lovers.

Okay book readers of Tumblr, I could use some help.
I read a book years ago, and I’m trying to find it again, but I don’t remember the title.
What I do remember was that it was a (possibly?) romance novel (not a smutty one) set in Victorian England. The main character was physically disabled and had to use a cane to get around, and I’m pretty sure she was a witch?… I don’t really know, but magic definitely played a big part in the story. I’m also pretty sure one character was a doctor named Graves, and other characters commented on the irony of such a name. One scene I remember was this party where the characters unwrapped an actual Egyptian mummy (which was an actual thing Victorians did!).
Also the main character’s disability wasn’t magicked away, her maid and her best friend got together and made her new shoes and canes that went with her outfits and made it easier for her to walk without pain or discomfort.
I’m going to keep looking for the book, but if this is ringing any bells please reblog with the title, I really want to read this one again.
@sophielovesbooks @books-and-cookies @sleepyreads @whilereadingandwalking @just0nemorepage @i-love-books-because-reasons please help if you can
Update: I think we found it!
I’ll have to reread it to be totally sure, but it seems to be Courtship and Curses by Marissa Doyle!
It’s set in the Regency period, not the Victorian era, but Ms. Doyle has other books set in the Victorian era, and I might have conflated the different books. Thanks so much to everyone who offered suggestions, I’ll have to read those too!

Oi oi oi, booklovers!
Favoritei quatro livros dela.
Bjs e boas leiturassss <33333

Jo, feel free to save and answer this ask whenever you have the time, but I love your writing style so much and I'm curious to know what your favorite books are? I used to be such an avid reader as a kid, but I find it so hard as an adult to find books that really hook me. It's like I need something more enjoyable than Faulkner but not anywhere near as formulaic as Nicholas Sparks, but those are the type of books that fill up many recommendation lists!
I love a nice, long novel that follows a character and their development over timen (can you tell why I like your work?). Some of my favorites are East of Eden, Vanity Fair, and I Know This Much Is True.
What have you read that you couldn't put down?
🌴
ohhhhhhh what a question. This is gonna need a read more.
I will admit to being a huge fan of young adult lit, despite being 33. A group of my friends and I go to YALLFest every fall to shout at our favorite authors. Some of my favorites from this category are Taherah Mafi (specifically her stand-alones "An Emotion of Great Delight" and "A Very Large Expanse of Sea"), Libba Bray (The Diviner's Series!!!! The Gemma Doyle Trilogy!!!!), Leigh Bardugo (specifically the Six of Crows duology and the Ninth House series), Sarah Dessen (though I'll admit this is mostly out of loyalty and nostalgia at this point and I think if I read her books fresh as an adult i would not love them like i did growing up), Marissa Meyer (The Lunar Chronicles!!!!!!!!!! but another that idk if i would love if i read them NOW instead of at 20), and E. Lockheart (WE WERE LIARS!!!!!).
As far as fiction meant for real adults lol I haven't been a fan of any of her books since the early 2010s but Jodi Picoult was really formative when I was a teenager and is honestly the reason I went for a writing degree. I thought I'd be her when I grew up (haaaa). I really liked Sara Gruen (EXCEPT for the one about monkeys WHO LET HER WRITE THAT), Tara Conklin, Kevin Brockmeier, Margaret Atwood (i once tripled the page assignment for a paper on Handmaid's Tale about a decade before it was a show and got a B for going over the page limit >:( true story). I am a HUGE HUGE HUGE fan of Brunonia Barry - can't recommend The Lace Reader or The Map of True Places enough!
Ok, for my ults - in the YA category it's Maggie Stiefvater (Raven King series, again - not sure how this will read as an adult person but I read them first in my early 20s and I was DEEPLY attached and she's one of the smartest, most wonderful people and I've met her several times and gone to her writing seminars and she's just..... a god tier human and great writer).
For adult fiction ult... N.K. Jemisen. I named the Professor in MFFMHH after her!!!! Nora is like........ literally a genius in our generation. Her trilogy The Broken Earth Trilogy fucked up my brain so bad I'll never recover (and it's also the key inspo for This is a Love Song, my WIP! It's technically a crossover of parts of the world from this series, plus bangtan lmao). It's a GUTTING analogy of colonization, racism, slavery, oppression... hidden behind an almost sci-fi/apocalyptic backdrop. It is SERIOUSLY so so so so so so so good but it will break your brain and fuck you up.
let me know if you end up reading any of these!!!! i love to talk about books!!!!
<3 <3 <3 <3 i hope you're having a good week!!!!

Hey babes! It’s the first day of Spring so you know what that means…it’s time for a Spring Reading Recommendations List! For me, springtime is when I want to read all the classics. There’s just something about classic novels that just demands to be read in the spring, I’m not exactly sure why, but it does! So, this list will be made up of a few classics, but I’ve thrown in some historical fiction, some whodunits, fantasy, and contemporaries for good measure. Alright, let’s get started!
Tumblr media
1.       Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
The first of Jane Austen’s novel to be published, Northanger Abbey is a lighthearted novel that follows our heroine, Catherine Morland. In the novel, Catherine is taken to Bath for the first time, and while there she meets Henry Tilney and his sister Eleanor, who invite her to stay at their family home, Northanger Abbey. While there Catherine imagines that a terrible murder has taken place, which leads her to trouble. This novel is really about a young girl’s imagination and the power of reading! It’s really short so it’s perfect to read on a lazy spring day!
2.       Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
I put this book on my winter reading list too, but it’s also going on this one because it’s the best book and perfect for all year ‘round! Great Expectations is a chunky book, but don’t let its size scare you away! it is fantastic! It is truly a story about life. It begins when our main character, Pip, is six years old, when he first meets ‘the convict’. The novel follows Pip throughout his life, from meeting the eccentric Miss Havisham, falling in love with the indifferent and cold Estella, and coming into money and great expectations. We see the rise and fall of Pip as a person, ending the novel around the time that Pip is thirty. I laughed, cried and simply fell in love with the characters of this novel!
3.       Courtship and Curses by Marissa Doyle
Courtship and Curses is a prequel to the duology, The Bewitching Season and The Betraying Season. All three novels are prefect to read in the spring, as they are fashioned after the style of Jane Austen. In Courtship and Curses, our main character, Sophie,(who is also a witch!) has a lame leg and walks with a cane, which leads her to think that she will never find a husband during her first season out in society. Then in walks the charming Lord Woodbridge who seems to love Sophie for exactly who and how she is. And let me tell you, Lord Woodbridge is very much like Mr. Darcy. Every word that comes out of his mouth makes me swoon!
Tumblr media
 4. Hamlet by William Shakespeare
Hamlet is, in my humble opinion, the ultimate classic! It has everything, ghosts, murder, psychotic breaks, romance, incest, adventure, existential crises and even pirates! It is such a good story, and please, please if you have to read it for school, do not write it off as boring or too hard! if you go into it with a closed mind, you won’t enjoy it. So please just let yourself go in this world, and I’m sure you’ll like it! I always read Hamlet in the spring, specifically in May. I read it for the first time in May and now every May, like clockwork, I have to read it!
5.       Taken at the Flood by Agatha Christie
In Taken at the Flood, Detective Hercule Poirot must solve the mystery of a man, who is thought to be dead but maybe isn’t, who’s family now believes is coming back to reclaim his fortune. This is one of Poirot’s most puzzling cases which includes three dead bodies, blackmail and secret identities! I don’t’ want to say anymore because every little detail could be a spoiler for a murder mystery!
6.       Les Misérables by Victor Hugo
The ultimate chunky book! Set during the backdrop of the June Rebellion, this story is about one man’s journey to freedom. Biblical allusions, action, adventure and barricade boys. And a bomb musical to go along with it! Don’t let the size of this book turn you away. It is worth the effort!
Tumblr media
7.       A Room with a View by E. M. Forster
A Room with a View follows our main character, Lucy, who has her world turned upside down when she meets a boy in Italy who shows her that there are other ways of living, despite what her rigid English upbringing has taught her. Torn between the bright and lively world of Italy and the life she’s always known in Edwardian England, Lucy must learn to follow her heart…even if it leads to scandal.
8.       The Iron King by Julie Kagawa
When Megan Chase’s little brother is stolen by the fey, she, along with her best friend and a fairy prince, must travel through the Nevernever to get him back. Along the way, Megan learns that she is the daughter of the King of the Spring Court. Megan must decide which life to claim, the one she has always known in the human world, or the life as one of the fey.
9.       Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingles
This is the first novel in the Little House series, based on the journals of Laura Ingles. Little House in the Big Woods is a cozy and quaint novel about pioneer living through the eyes of a child.
10.   A Night in with Audrey Hepburn by Lucy Holliday
One of the only contemporary novels I’ve thoroughly enjoyed, A Night in with Audrey Hepburn is my dream! One night while staying in feeling sorry for herself, our main character, Libby, comes face to face with the ghost(?) of Audrey Hepburn. During their nights in, Audrey teaches Libby how to be comfortable in her own skin…while also getting up to a few antics! This book really spoke to me; Audrey Hepburn is my idol in every way and I would be thrilled to have her haunt my couch and bestow her wisdom unto me!
Tumblr media
And that’s it! I hope you give these books a try because they are really good! Let me know if you do end up reading them or if you’ve already read them. I would love to chat about them with you!

Oiii, booklovers!
🧡| Anne - Lucy Maud Montgomery
🧡| Sherlock Holmes - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (+10)
Meu preferidinho, dono do meu coração e lar do meu crush literário supremo!
• Trilogias
🧡| Amor & Livros - Jenna Evans Welch (+12/+13)
🧡| Alice - Lewis Carroll (+10)
Bjs e boas leituras <333

•Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Akzaban - J.K. Rowling 9/10
•A Study In Emerald - Neil Gaiman 7/10
•The Hounds of Baskerville - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle 10/10 (I loved this so much. There was so much Watson in this story, and Henry Baskerville is really quirky and adorable. He lost his shoe :(. )
•The Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy - Douglas Adams 9/10 (Just watched the movie. I saw a few clips before hand and totally imagined Martin Freeman as Arthur Dent, 10/10 on the relatability and the feeling of and existential crisis.)
•Farenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury 8/10 (For school) (A lot better then my other books for school, since I got to pick the book, and I have a better teacher this year.)
•Restaurant At The End of The Universe - Douglas Adams 10/10 (I never put this book down, and I'm starting to love this series. It's a bit of a slow paced book and series. Spite this, it fills me with this kind of wonder every time I read it.)
Can't wait for another year of reading! This might not be entirely accurate because I forgot to write down some books I read, but I definitely read a lot more than I thought I would (For someone who has a lot of reading slumps).
