Royal Navy Issue Boarding Pistol from the British Empire dated between 1791 - 1795 on display at the Vancouver Maritime Museum in Canada

Explorers like Captain George Vancouver, who charted and claimed what is now British Columbia in Canada, were also officers in the Royal Navy. The ships and crews were armed and were ready and trained to use violence against Native peoples or rival empires.

Pistols with long barrels, like this one, were commonly used by seamen were as ones with shorter barrels were issued to officers officers. These pistols were cheaper than the ones produced for the army and were mainly use for close combat with a heavy handle which could be used as a bludgeoning weapon.

HMS Cornwallis model

This contemporary ship model of HMS Cornwallis is located in the All Hands children's gallery at the National Maritime Museum Greenwich. I missed it the other times I went because I didn't think to look there.

Fitzjames served on the Cornwallis from 1841-1843 during the First Opium War in China. This ship model was made from the same wood that was used for the actual ship and made by the shipbuilder himself in 1813.

I WAS ACTUALLY JUST AT THE MARITIME MUSEUM IN HALIFAX! I'm not super into boats so I did get bored for a bit but they had so many cool boats and the titantic exhibit was so sad 😭 it did make me want to go sailing out onto the open ocean real bad. I think my soul yearns for the sea.

ANON, ARE YOU TELLING ME YOU JUST MADE the maritime museum of HALIFAX YESTERDAY??

I have to admit I'm jealous, I would love to be there! (Although it can take years to reach Halifax, evidently). It's just as well you aren't super into boats and didn't touch any of the cursed ghost ship artifacts they just leave lying around, like a normal museum. (If for whatever reason you are seeing a glowing light or some sort of fiery ship near Mahone Bay, maybe go in the opposite direction).

This weekend was INCREDIBLE!! Finally got to go to the Maritime Museum in Greenwich and couldnt have picked a better day. It ended up being a day when there were tours going on with queer readings of maritime history and drag queens performing. SO NOT ONLY did I get to spend hours in the Polar exhibit with all these paintings and artifacts from some of my favorite historic figures, I also got to info dump on my friend who knew nothing about polar exploration AND got to listen to queer readings on these guys letters and journals AND AND had fantastic conversations with the people running the tours and got to geek out about polar explorers and The Terror and all my favorite things and it was genuinely so magical. I cant stop thinking about it 😭

And thank you again to those who did the tours and got the pleasure to talk to, it was wonderful meeting you guys!!!

Shipwreck exhibit at the Maritime Museum in Astoria, Oregon. My favorite wreck is the SS Mauna Alma, which set out for Hawaii to delivery Christmas goods to the troops stationed at Pearl Harbor four days before it was attacked by Japanese forces. They were rerouted to the Columbia River, where they promptly ran aground. Nobody died, and open salvage was declared on the 60,000 Christmas trees, 10,000 turkeys, 3,000 chickens, and unknown amount of Almond Roca.

100 years ago... LtCmdr Rupert Gould best selling book 100 years ago, Royal Navy LtCmdr Rupert Gould (1890-1948) published his famous book " The Marine Chronometer " (preface December 1922 - 1923) but we didn't have to wait a century for a worthy reprint as in 2013 the ACC Antique Collectors' Club brought out their 365 pages version... and again in 2016. A truly amazing book with extra chapter full of great color photographs as both reprints almost sold out immediately. October 5th, 2023 will be the 75th anniversary of the passing of LtCmdr Rupert Gould, a Royal Navy officer who safed, cleaned and repaired John Harrison's Marine clocks, naming H1 to H5. Explorers like Captain George Vancouver, who charted and claimed what is now British Columbia in Canada, were also officers in the Royal Navy. The ships and crews were armed and were ready and trained to use violence against Native peoples or rival empires.

Cutlesses like this were issued to seaman for boarding and defensive actions and out of combat were stored on the ship. When needed they were often distributed to the seamen in a barrel on deck for easy access. Regulation cutlesses were produced by a number of manufacturers so they were not all the exact same pattern.

Indonesian sailors had been coming to Australia a long time before Abel Tasman, who was here more than 120 before James Cook…. But that’s not the history taught to me many decades ago.

Our frontier wars certainly weren’t in my text books.

Nonetheless, this reproduction of Cook’s Endeavour at Sydney’s Maritime Museum is very smart.
