Your mother’s been dating Chris Evans for the last couple of months. He’s a good guy, you’ll admit it, but you’ve yet to really warm up to him. It’s been less than two years since your parents’ divorce, and you’re still pretty raw over that. To you, it feels as though your father is being replaced. But you can see how badly Chris wants to get to know you, to make you feel comfortable around him, and you can’t help but feel a little guilty for making him go all out just to make you happy. But at the same time, you know it’ll probably be a while until you fully trust him or feel comfortable around him.
Unfortunately, your mother caught onto that and opted to go visit some friends of hers for the day. Which meant you’d be left home with Chris. You’re not sure if your mother knew of your aloofness towards Chris or if it recently got brought to her attention, but it ticked you off that she’d leave you alone with her boyfriend so suddenly. In the months since your mother and Chris got together, you rarely spent any alone time with him. You couldn’t bring yourself to do so; it felt like you’d be betraying your father if you got attached to some guy your mom brought home. Now you don’t really have a choice.
You texted nearly all of your friends to see if they were available, but they either had work or were busy with something else. You came close to calling your father until you remembered he was away on business, and it’ll be weeks until you see him again. So your options are this: stay in your room until your mom comes home, whenever that is, or leave your room and risk interacting with Chris. You opted for the former. And for the most part it worked, until the two hour mark hit and you heard a knock on your door. You nearly jumped out of your skin, looking up from your phone to see Chris standing in your doorway, looking a little anxious.
“Can I come in?” he asks. You give a halfhearted shrug before looking back at your phone. There’s a long pause before you hear footsteps coming in your room, towards your bed where you’re sitting. You feel the foot of your bed dip and you know Chris is sitting there. “I know this might be difficult for you,” he says, sounding just a little unsure, “but I want you to feel comfortable around me, I want... I just think we can get along if we get to know each other.”
You glance up at him, studying his features for a moment. He looks just as unsure as he sounds. Your guilt bubbles to the surface, reminding you that maybe you’re treating him a bit unfairly. You swallow thickly, trying (and failing) to push your guilt down.
“What do you want to know?” you ask. You’re hesitant, not sure what he’s going to say.
“What kinds of movies do you like?”
Oh God. Do you say Marvel? They’re good movies, but they’re not your favorite, but you don’t know if it’ll hurt his feelings if you say that. But you can’t just lie to make him feel better, that’ll make you feel even worse.
“I guess Marvel movies,” you respond. “They’re not my favorite, but they’re a good way to pass the time.”
Chris lets out an airy chuckle. “I suppose I can cross that out then,” he states.
You furrow your brows. “Why?”
“I was thinking we could do a movie marathon,” he responds. “But since Marvel’s not your favorite, I think we could try something else.”
“Sorry,” you say, “it’s nothing against you or Captain America but I just couldn’t get invested in those movies.”
Chris waves it off. “Don’t worry about it,” he replies. “We can figure out something else. If you’re okay with it.”
You give another shrug, this time with a small smile on your face. “That’s fine,” you respond. You can’t keep putting this aside, you know that, and maybe it’ll be beneficial. You already know Chris is a nice guy, and while he could never replace your father, he could become something of a friend to you.
