Masts, yards, rigging and sails
Once the hull was completed, the three masts were attached, which were common to all rated Men-o-War. As these ships carried an enormous sail area, it was not possible to use masts built from a single pole, as no tree grew tall enough or was strong enough. The mast was therefore built in three sections, with the thickest and strongest section running through the decks to the keel (on some smaller ships such as frigates, the mizzen mast, the smallest of the three masts, ended at the level of the lower deck.

Spars
The wooden poles fixed to the masts and bowsprit- which included yards, booms and gaffs, to which the sails were attached- were then added. These were, in order from bow to stern and from upper to lower:
Bowsprit:
sprit topsail; jib boom (the upper section of the two piece bowsprit); spritsail yard; bowsprit
Foremast:
fore royal yard; forreste topgallantmast; fore topsail yard; fore yard; fore mast
Mainmast:
main royal yard; main topgallant yard; main topgallant mast; main topsail yard; main topmast; main yard; main mast
Mizzen mast:
mizzen royal yard; mizzen topfgallant yard; mizzen topgallant mast; main topsail yard; main topmast; main yard; mainmast
With the masts and spars completed, the ship was rigged, which meant adding all the ropes, cables and chains used to support the masts and spars (standing rigging) and to raise, lower and adjust sails and yards (running rigging), as well as the tackle- pulley blocks, eyebolts and so on- needed to hold or adjust it . There was literally miles of rigging in a rated warship, but it was essential to the ship, and included shrouds and stays. (shrouds supported the masts and ran from the ship’s sides, and in their two lower sections included ratlines, which functioned as rope ladders for men going aloft; stays also supported the masts but ran fore and aft - a stay running forward towards the bow is a forestay, and one running towards the stern is a backstay).

With the standing rigging completed, the sails and running rigging were added. the former wer attached to the yards at the top, and could be purpose, or raised, lowered ot otherwise adjusted by means of the running rigging. Sailing a large three masted man of war was therefore a formidably complex business, and the training of officers and crew in handling sails and rigging was central to good shiphandling and seamanship.

Image description: Ships and boats of various sizes are docked at the side of a pier. Their dark masts contrast with the light, cloudy sky. On the pier are piles of barrels and large blocks. A few people walk along the pier.

right as rain (10)
weary, he runs without catching his breath
yet he knows that each step is in vain
you disappear like you're somehow absolved
of destruction you left in your wake
but when you awaken
to all that you've come to ignore
it will have destroyed you
and everything you once were
right as rain
how you long to be free of it all
so far removed
but you can't be too careful
if you've got something to lose
callus and cold like the ache in his bones
every step more arduous than the last
into the storm
fore and aft have been torn
as the tempest debases the masts
i watched your heart
corrode and rust
pumping out artificial blood
apathy coursing through your veins
i've seen it once
and once is enough
you have lost much more than must trust
God knows if things will ever change
will you fight this
or give in?

anyone else ever wish they could lie down harder? Like, I'm already horizonal, but I need more horizonal. I need to be absorbed by the floor. I think that would fix me
