Utah legislators start the process of overturning a 2015 state law preventing discrimination against transgender college students in most facets regarding campus life. HB269(<-2025 bill)

The new bill, HB269, tries to balance anti-discrimination protections with privacy concerns over restrooms, locker rooms and housing.

Specifically, the bill mandates that individuals stay in rooms that correspond with their sex designation, regardless of their gender identity or even the sex their birth certificate indicates (in the case of birth certificate changes).

“It is disappointing and frightening how quickly (my) rights and safety were thrust aside for a man’s feelings,” Avery Saltzman, a USU student who had been assigned to share a living space with the transgender resident assistant, told the committee. “I should have been able to live and learn in a comfortable and safe community on campus."

“There is no need for a policy encouraging literal segregation,” testified Mackenzie Robertson, the mother of the transgender resident assistant at USU. “My daughter ... was randomly assigned to this dorm and was so excited to meet other girls and make friends. ... I am in shock at the treatment my daughter has received by grown adults who have put her safety at significant risk. I am appalled by the writers of this bill for holding the safety of other girls over the safety of mine.”

All but two members of the House Business, Labor and Commerce Committee voted in favor of the bill, with Rep. Ashlee Matthews, D-West Jordan, and Rep. Hoang Nguyen, D-Salt Lake City, voting against.

“We don’t want to touch that (2015) compromise because it (centered on) rights as well as religious freedoms, and we are very sensitive to that,” Schultz told reporters. “We don’t believe people should be discriminating. But the intent of that bill is never to allow biological males into female dorms.”

It's that time of year again: Yuletide reveals!

I think this was my most transparent Yuletide of all time: All Kinds of Music for Elsbeth. Elsbeth visits Arthur Avenue and then has another evening at the opera. Raise your hand if you guessed! Be honest.

I was lucky to receive an extraordinary gift this year: I needed it (I know, I know, I know) by Philipa_Moss for Four Weddings and a Funeral. Centered on my favorite characters from the ensemble, Fiona and Matthew, with a queer read of Fiona that made me go, yup, that's the exact kind of person she'd be attracted to. And the whole tone is spot on for her. The story is joyful and a little sexy, but there is a gorgeous thread of grief that is so honest and true to life. Grief isolates us. It makes it hard to find each other, even for people who are close to us and close to those who passed. And that experience is beautifully rendered through Fiona's eyes in this story. I think I felt the loss of Gareth more here than I did in the movie itself. Give it a read and some love.

I also got a treat, Dance While We Can by Missy for Cabaret. A happy ending for Schneider and Schultz, or maybe a fist encased in velvet. Sweet and sharp, give it a read.

Not going to do more individual recs but I will say the Slow Horses turn out for Yuletide this year was excellent. Lots of Standish, lots of Taverner. Good stuff.
