Comic Review: And Then There Was Shawn
Tumblr media
A precursor to my horror fandom was my predilection for Halloween episodes of my favorite shows growing up. Long before I saw the horror icons in action, I found great joy in spooky-themed specials from the likes of Roseanne, Home Improvement, Family Matters, and The Simpsons. But my favorite was always Boy Meets World's "And Then There Was Shawn." Incidentally, it was not released as a Halloween episode - it debuted in February 1998 as part of the series' fifth season - but its riff on the post-Scream slasher boom made it a perfect gateway into the genre for '90s kids.
I'm not alone in my admiration for the episode; it's a favorite among many fans of the show, but perhaps none more than Jennifer Ball. The Utah-based artist has painstakingly adapted "And Then There Was Shawn" into a 28-page comic book. Bud, the creepy janitor featured in the episode (the final role of Joe Turkel, who genre fans will recognize as the bartender from The Shining), serves as the Cryptkeeper-style host for the nightmarish tale of terror that befalls a group of youths at John Adams High.
Tumblr media
After an outburst in Mr. Feeny's (William Daniels) class, recently separated high school sweethearts Cory (Ben Savage) and Topanga (Danielle Fishel), their loyal friends Shawn (Rider Strong) and Angela (Trina McGee), and classmate Kenny (Richard Lee Jackson) - in his only appearance, seemingly included for the sole purpose of a South Park reference - find themselves in detention. They're soon joined by Cory's elder brother Eric (Will Friedle) and Shawn's half-brother Jack (Matthew Lawrence). Locked inside the school, the horror quickly escalates as characters are picked off one-by-one by a masked killer.
The episode's namesake is a play on Agatha Christie's 1939 murder-mystery novel And Then There Were None, the impact of which can certainly be felt on virtually every slasher movie, but the main influence is Scream and the glut of self-aware teen-horror movies that followed. Shawn assumes the role of the horror movie expert a la Randy from Scream, pointing out tropes and references (albeit to nonexistent movies in this case). Jennifer Love Hewitt, fresh off the success of I Know What You Did Last Summer (and dating Friedle at the time), shows up as a red herring named Jennifer Love Fefferman.
Tumblr media
"And Then There Was Shawn" can stand on its own even if you're unfamiliar with the show, but diehards will find even more to enjoy in the comic. Ball's attention to detail is remarkable, faithfully recreating every beat, capturing the character likenesses, and including minutiae no matter how small. She goes so far as to create faux ads: a poster for Blood in the Showers, one of several cheeky movie titles referenced in the episode, and a back-page ad for Chubbie's, a restaurant prominently featured in the show.
The episode - directed by Jeff McCracken and written by Jeff Menell (both series regulars) - is memorable because it cleverly diverged so far from the sitcom formula viewers were accustomed to. It felt dangerous, as beloved characters were mercilessly killed off (seemingly, at least), but the unpredictable reveal of the killer’s identity brought it back to the core of what made Boy Meets World stand out among its peers: its heart. More than just cheap laughs, the series was a coming-of-age tale. While Ball leans into the horror elements for the purpose of the comic, she successfully captures the emotion as well.
And Then There Was Shawn is available now from Jennifer Ball.

More Shows that Should Be Added to Disney Plus
I after I completed my last list, which consisted mainly Disney Channel shows, a few more shows popped into my head. I also remembered that Disney now owns Fox as well as ABC, so even more great shows popped into my head.
Some of these might not be on Disney Plus because of certain rights issues. I don’t know anything about those types of matters. I just think these are great shows that would make Disney Plus even better.
(Thankfully, some of these shows can be found on YouTube, thanks to some awesome people with VCRs. Of course, having them stream on Disney Plus with good quality would be even better!)
10. PB&J Otter
Tumblr media
PB&J Otter was a cartoon about three otter siblings named Peanut, Butter, and Jelly. They lived a cute little fishing town inhabited by other cute little animals. It was created by the same makers of Doug and Allegra’s Window (anybody remember that one?). This show ran on Disney Playhouse and Disney Junior for quite some time. I think it’s only natural to include it on Disney Plus as well.
9. Braceface
Tumblr media
Braceface initially aired on Fox Family, which later became ABC Family, and then aired on the Disney Channel. It’s about a teen girl whose braces somehow have an electric charge and constantly interfere with her life. It was executive produced and voiced by Alicia Silverstone. Other voice talents included Michael Cera and Kathy Griffin.
8. Second Noah
Tumblr media
Second Noah was a great family drama about a married couple who took in stray animals and orphan children. Imagine if The Fosters lived in a zoo. The cast included a young James Marsden as the oldest adopted son. He sings in every single episode. That alone is worth the watch. Even though this was a great show, I doubt we’ll ever see it again. It was filmed at Busch Gardens in Florida before The Animal Kingdom had opened. Disney probably doesn’t want to promote its competition on its own streaming service. But one can dream... of James Marsden’s perfect singing voice.
7. The Koala Brothers
Tumblr media
I am a grown adult but I will watch The Koala Brothers any day of the week. This claymation series takes place in the Australian outback, where two koala brothers fly their airplane to assist anyone in need of help. It features an adorable little community made up of a turtle postman, a storekeeper echidna, an ice cream truck driving emu, a forgetful cafe owner platypus, and more lovable creatures. It’s just a really adorable show that even adults can enjoy.
6. Brotherly Love
Tumblr media
Brotherly Love originally aired on The WB and its reruns was aired on The Disney Channel for several years. Just like two other popular shows, Smart Guy (which is currently on Disney Plus) and Sister Sister. It featured Joey Lawrence has the oldest and estranged brother, who returns to help his two younger brothers (Matthew, Andy) and their auto mechanic business survive. The three brothers were played by real brothers in real life. It was a wholesome family show, with a cute Lawrence brother for every age group to crush on.
5. Higher Ground
Tumblr media
This show. This show was amazing. It aired on the Fox Family channel for one year, then disappeared forever. But man, it was so good. It was set at a boarding school for at-risk teens in the mountains — like camping but with actual licensed counselors. It focused on a couple of counselors and their troubled teen students. It dealt with some very real issues, like sexual abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, narcissistic/emotional abuse, neglect, self-harm, eating disorders, homelessness, gang violence, and prostitution. It never used these issues for shock value or preachy, saccharine plot lines. It never judged the teens for their hard lives, but portrayed them honestly. Anyone who’s lived through a difficult childhood will find themselves relating to these teenagers. The cast included a pre-Anakin Hayden Christensen (he’s seriously really good in this!), a pre-Criminal Minds AJ Cook, and a pre-Once Upon a Time Meghan Ory. It might be a little heavy for Disney Plus, so a disclaimer would be needed, just like when it originally aired on Fox Family.
4. Young Hercules
Tumblr media
Following the success of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess, Young Hercules was developed for a younger audience. Much of the crew went on to work on The Lord of the Rings trilogy either during or shortly after this series. It debuted on Fox Kids in the late 90’s and starred a teenage Ryan Gosling as young Hercules. It was super cheesy, which makes it even better. Who doesn’t want to watch a spray tanned, bleached blond, eyelined Ryan Gosling slay imaginary beasts?
3. Bear in the Big Blue House
Tumblr media
Bear in the Big Blue House was a really great show for preschoolers. It ranks up there with Sesame Street and Blue’s Clues. It featured a big bear welcoming you into his big blue house. There you sing and play with his puppet friends and roommates. At the end of each episode, there’s a lovely goodbye song with the moon (yes, the moon sings). It’s a wonderful, entertaining show for little ones. Parents won’t mind watching it for the millionth time either. If Disney Plus is including Out of the Box, they should definitely include this one too.
2. Movie Surfers
Tumblr media
Movie Surfers is basically a behind-the-scenes preview of soon to be released Disney movies. It includes footage of the making process, cast interviews, and occasionally performances from the soundtrack. The original cast included Christina Milian, who then went by Tina. It’s still going on today as minis during commercial breaks. Some very classic movies have been featured, including Mulan, The Princess Diaries, and Finding Nemo. More recent films have also been featured, such as as the live action Beauty and the Beast, The Muppets, and Moana. This would be a great addition to Disney Plus as it would get viewers interested in other movies available on the streaming service.
1. Disney Channel in Concert
Tumblr media
This Disney Channel Special series started in 1997 and ran until 2001. It featured a live concert, behind the scenes footage, and interviews with the musical guest and family members. After their 1998 performance, *NSYNC’s debut album immediately skyrocketed to No. 1 on the Billboard charts. After their tremendous success, many other young acts were quick to follow, including Britney Spears, LeeAnn Rimes, Jessica Simpson, 98 Degrees, and the Backstreet Boys.

The Friends Cast’s Best Post-Friends Roles
https://ift.tt/3vr0Vgh
Early on in HBO Max’s long-awaited Friends reunion special “The One Where They Get Back Together,” series co-creator David Crane reveals the producing team’s initial vision for the show.
“We were really intrigued with the idea of doing a true ensemble. It’s not like there’s a lead and they have friends. No, it’s just about the friends. We’re following all of their stories equally.”
Friends would never have worked if Crane, Marta Kauffman, and Kevin Bright hadn’t gone six for six in the casting of the titular friends. One or two solid choices wouldn’t do it. Neither would four or five. It had to be all six.

TV
Friends: 25 Best Episodes
By Louisa Mellor
As evidenced by the fact that there’s now a reunion special more than 15 years after the show has gone off the air (and one that each member of the cast was reportedly paid a staggering $2 million to attend), Friends found the right six actors for the job. David Schwimmer (Ross Geller), Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe Buffay), Jennifer Aniston (Rachel Green), Matt LeBlanc (Joey Tribbiani), Courteney Cox (Monica Geller), and Matthew Perry (Chandler Bing) all shared an impeccable chemistry. Not only that, but each was able to carry moments of the show when needed.
As former Friends guest star and interviewee in the special Reese Witherspoon notes: “Friends has this magic because each character is so distinct that they could hold a television show by themselves.”
Of course, nothing lasts forever – not even one of the most successful sitcoms of all time. Though Friends continues to find new fans via streaming, the show concluded for good in 2004 and its central sextet’s careers carried on. Since “The One Where They All Get Back Together” got everyone in the proper mood for reminiscing, let’s reminisce about the best role for each of the cast once their iconic run on Friends concluded.
The only rule for eligibility here is that the actor’s role has to have come after Friends wrapped entirely. This disqualifies otherwise stellar work like Schwimmer in 2001’s Band of Brothers and Aniston in 1999’s The Iron Giant. The role in question also has to have been in a movie or TV series, which hurts Perry a bit as he’s had some good jobs in theater and videogames.
Fittingly enough, however, each of the Friends’ actors best post-Friends role happened to come on a television show.
Matthew Perry – The Odd Couple
Aaron Sorkin’s Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip is absolutely Perry’s most prominent role after Friends. In fact, it might be among the most prominent roles that any Friends castmember has had since the show signed off. Unfortunately, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip ended up being a bit of a cringe fest.
Perry has a promising role as a conservative talk show host coming up in Adam McKay’s next film. For now, his best post-Friends role is likely one of his two recent network sitcom attempts: sports talk radio host Ryan King in NBC’s Go On or Oscar Madison in CBS’s The Odd Couple. Let’s go with the latter because he had good chemistry with co-star Thomas Lennon (who turned up in the Friends reunion special as well).
Matt LeBlanc – Episodes
LeBlanc has not been quite as prolific as his Friends peers since the show concluded. After his character’s spinoff Joey failed at NBC, LeBlanc took a bit of a break from the TV world. When he returned though he did so with unquestionably his best post-Joey role.
In Showtime’s Episodes, LeBlanc plays a fictionalized version of himself cast in a role that doesn’t suit him. The show’s British creators are attempting to update their concept for an American audience and have been saddled with the former Friends star by a studio that really doesn’t get their whole deal. LeBlanc won a Golden Globe for this role and was nominated for four Emmy awards.
Jennifer Aniston – The Morning Show
Aside from some guest appearances on TV here and there, Aniston threw herself into the film world after Friends wrapped up with roles in projects like The Switch, Horrible Bosses, We’re the Millers, and more. It wasn’t until she returned to television in 2019, however, that she found her best post-Rachel Green acting opportunity.
Alongside her Friends sister Reese Witherspoon, Aniston is the star of Apple TV+’s drama The Morning Show, playing morning show host Alex Levy. When her cohost is fired amid a sexual harassment scandal, Alex works to secure her role as the top news anchor while dealing with Witherspoon’s ascendant reporter Bradley Jackson. Aniston was nominated for an Emmy and won the Screen Actors Guild award for the role.
Courteney Cox – Cougar Town
Cougar Town may be saddled with one of the silliest names in all the TV canon, but it’s really a lovely sitcom – maybe the best traditional sitcom a Friends actor has been involved with after Friends, in fact. As created and run by Bill Lawrence (Scrubs, Ted Lasso), Cougar Town started as a one-note concept that found Cox’s character freshly divorced and prepared to date younger men (you know, like a mountain lion).
The show quickly changed gears, however, and became a charming hangout comedy that highlighted the chemistry and strengths of its cast. At the center of it all was Cox’s pitch perfect depiction of Jules Cobb: an optimistic woman who loves her friends and giant goblets of wine. Cox is also set to reprise one of her major characters from the Friends era when Gale Weathers returns in 2022’s Scream.
David Schwimmer – The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story
At first glance, it’s a bit strange that David Schwimmer was part of FX’s The People O.J. Simpson. It’s even stranger that the character he was chosen to play was the Juice’s friend and lawyer Robert Kardashian, white streak in his hair and all. All the memery and mockery at Ross Geller’s presence as the Kardashian paterfamilias in the first American Crime Story is understandable but it belies what is a pretty great performance!
Who knows if Schwimmer’s Bob Kardashian bears any resemblance to the real version. But as a character, he’s a crucial, consistent presence in the miniseries’ 10 episodes as a man who just wants to see the best in his friend for as long as he logically can. Since Friends, Schwimmer has also lent his voice to the Madagascar film series, and co-starred in Sky One comedy Intelligence.
Lisa Kudrow – The Comeback
Lisa Kudrow has kept busy in the 15+ years since Phoebe Buffay rode off into the sunset with Paul Rudd. The actress has been a mainstay in television and film, but it’s the former medium where she made her biggest post-Friends mark. Kudrow co-created 2004 HBO mockumentary The Comeback and stars as the lead Valerie Cherish. The Comeback was an insider comedy about the entertainment industry before that became a trendy topic on television throughout the mid aughts. It’s also one of the best mockumentaries ever.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Valerie Cherish is a B-list sitcom actress trying to recapture her fleeting fame. To that end, she gets a bit role as “Aunt Sassy” on a sitcom called “Room and Bored” and agrees to have her acting comeback documented in a reality series called “The Comeback.”  The Comeback is an incisive satire of the entertainment industry that reaches Office levels of cringe-comedy. Through it all, Kudrow is perfect as the aging actress who is equal parts patient at all the indignities thrown her way and difficult when she wants to be. The show had a well-received second season in 2014.

My podcasts of 2020
I listen to a lot of podcasts, so here are some of my favourites of the last year. WTF with Marc Maron I'm a long-time listener, but this has been a hell of year with Marc. At first the pandemic seemed like a challenge for someone who's focussed on long format face-to-face interviews in his garage. But he quickly embraced videoconferencing and it unlocked a whole new level of interviews for him. And then of course his partner, filmmaker Lynn Shelton, passed away in May, and the podcast became part of a fairly open grieving process. One thing about Maron is he has never missed a show. The Monday after Lynn died, I would absolutely have understood if he did not put up an episode, or at least did a re-run. But there he was, and it was very raw and there was a real sense that his one-way relationship with his listeners matters to him. Saved episodes: Barry Sonnenfeld (April 23rd) and Barry Levinson (Sept. 24th). Thew two Barrys kind of cover most of the important films of the last 30 years between them, and their talks with Marc are just the best. You Must Remember This In May, Karina Longworth's well-produced long-running deep dive into Hollywood history received the back-handed compliment of inclusion on 10 Podcasts to Help You Fall Asleep . And I'd be lying if I said I'd never drifted off to the sound of Ms. Longworth's soothing voice telling me about hottible things Louis B. Mayer used to do. But it's still one of the best. Saved Episodes: "Polly Platt: The Forgotten Woman" (May 25th to July 27th). Do not sleep through this 10-part mini-series on an under-appreciated film-maker who never got a director's credit and often didn't get her due. From her early days as wife and collaborator of Peter Bogdanovich to later work with James L. Brooks, Cameron Crowe and Wes Anderson, it's an incredible saga with a lot to say about Hollywood and sexism. Suffice to say she may have started "The Simpsons", but somehow did not die a billionaire. Team Deakins When we look back on The Year of Our Pandemic, one of the best things about it might be the fact that one of the greatest living cinematographers was stuck at home with a lot of time on his hands so he started a podcast. Coen Brothers collaborator Roger Deakins opened up his rolodex and, with his wife and production parther James Deakins, put on one hell of a podcast which may prove to be the first film school for the next generation of film-makers. You will probably learn a lot more than you want or need to about making movies. I haven't kept up with them as they've made more than 75 episodes since April, but they are always great taolks with people who are very passionate about movies. Saved episodes: Joel Coen (August 2, 2020). This is the episode where I came in because THIS NEVER HAPPENS. The Coens don't really talk to anyone about their work, but here it is. Also Sam Mendes (June 14th) and Denis Villeneuve (July 8th). Oh, Hello: the P'dcast For 8 crazy weeks this spring, Nick Kroll and John Mulaney revisited their gormless and barely loveable elderly alter-egos from their Broadway show and Netflix special. Only it's a podcast, about them clumsily trying to find some connection to the death of Princess Diana. Saved episodes: None. You have to hear this once, but these are intentionally abrasive characters. You are not going to want to revisit them. The Marx Brothers Council Podcast I might be all alone on this one. This is a podcast that grew out of a Facebook Group for fans of The Marx Brothers. I like The Marx Brothers, but honestly I can't say I'm a fan. Their movies have not aged as well as you might hope. And the Facebook Group, which I joined, contains a lot of people who REALLY love the Marx Brothers, and few really cranky people who do not appreciate things that are not the Marx Brothers (or more precisely, the particular Marx Brothers movies that they like). I haven't checked today, but I think I may have been banned from the group for saying I liked Mank. Anyway, what I do like is this podcast. It's hosted by British film historian Matthew Coniam, New York actor and Groucho re-enactor Noah Diamond, and non-author/actor Bob Gassel of Chicago. It's just a great hang-out podcast because they love the subject matter so much they can sometimes get to hate it a bit. Saved Episodes: "You'll Duck Soup the Rest of Your Life" (March 28th) and "Send Out the Clowns" (June 24th). I guess nothing can capture my affection for this podcast more than listening to 3 smart and funny people share widely diverging opinions about two films that are generally considered to be either either the best or the worst of the ouevre. The Watch I've been watching a lot of TV and movies this year, but it's been hard to talk to anybody about a lot of it. So I really look forward to Mondays and Thursdays when Chris Ryan of The Ringer and writer/producer Andy Greenwald show up to dish about what they've been watching. There's a little inside-baseball entertainment industry gossip and a lot of talk about shows they really enjoy. I don't agree with them about everything, but they have put me onto some of the best TV I've seen this year, like Normal People and I May Destroy You. Saved Episode: "The Rise of Skywalker - A Shocking Disappointment" (Dec. 23, 2019). While technically not a 2020 podcast, you really need to hear this. Chris and Andy attended the red carpet premiere of the last Star Wars movie (and hated it), but they sat next to Kevin Smith (who loved it). Their talk about what went wrong with this movie is better than the movie. Star Wars Nerds Speaking of Star Wars, here's the only Winnipeg podcast on my list, which I almost exclusively listen to in the car with my 12-year-old son in the Wal-Mart parking lot while my wife is shopping. RRC Cre-Comm instructors Dan Vadeboncoeur and Kenton Larson don't put out the most consistent podcast, and they devote a bit too much running time to trying to remember things or looking things up on their phones. But my son is a big fan, though he thinks they swear too much. I guess if you have as many million listeners as the Star Wars Nerds, you don't need to worry about whether kids will want to listen to your podcast about kids' movies and TV shows. Saved Episode: "Tauntauns Are Real" (June 1st). I think this is one where they mention me by name because of something I tweeted at them. This was the only time my son was impressed with me last year. Revived 25 years later in Twin Peaks: The Return — no longer on Hotstar or some other place — garnering much acclaim.
Veep (2012 – 2019)
A satirical take on the internal workings of the US government, following a senator (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), selected to serve as the Vice President, and the hilarious antics of her incompetent staff. Won the Emmy 3 years in a row, while Louis-Dreyfus has racked up six instantly wins. Didn't have the same chew in later years, however nonetheless one of the first-class.
The Walking Dead (2010 – Present)
Based on Robert Kirkman's popular comedian collection, a horror drama set in a post-apocalyptic future in which the survivors — stars Andrew Lincoln, Steven Yeun, Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, and Danai Gurira have all spent seven years or greater — search for a safe haven in a world overrun by way of zombies. Hit its top in the fifth season, and by no means recovered.
Watchmen (2019)
Lost co-author Damon Lindelof bravely pushes the superhero genre with this “remixed” miniseries observe-up to creator Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons' seminal 1987 comedian ebook series of the equal name. Set 34 years after the events of the authentic, a police detective and vigilante (Regina King) digs into the homicide of a friend, which has ties to a white supremacist institution's evil plan.
Westworld (2016 – Present)
Set in a futuristic topic park, this mind-bending sci-fi collection is ready the sunrise of cognizance in androids, who've been used by their human makers without any worry of retaliation. Based on Michael Crichton's 1973 film, on which it then expands. Its penchant for inscrutability and style over substance can get in its manner, but it's in no way without thrills.
What We Do inside the Shadows (2019 – Present)
Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement's 2014 mockumentary horror comedy movie is becoming a chain by the latter which follows 4 vampires who have been residing collectively for loads and masses of years in Staten Island, New York. Praised for its absurdity, charming forged, and lore expansion.
The Wire (2002 – 2008)
A complicated, unflinching exam of the societal ills plaguing Baltimore, always targeted at the metropolis's illegal drug exchange and touching upon the waterfront, politicians, school machine, and media intake as season-lengthy subplots. I told the story from all angles and remains one of the first-class shows of all-time.
Wolf Hall (2015)
Mark Rylance, Damian Lewis, and Claire Foy big name on this six-element model of the first books in Hilary Mantel's fictionalized biographical planned trilogy of Thomas Cromwell (Rylance), who rose thru the ranks in Henry VIII's (Lewis) court by using liberating the king of his marriage to Anne Boleyn (Foy). The acting, direction, and attention to length element had been praised.
Work in Progress (2019 – Present)
In another target market underappreciated show that was praised immensely by means of critics, a forty five-yr-vintage self-figuring out “fat, queer dyke” (Abby McEnany, also co-writer and co-writer) laid low with despair and obsessive-compulsive disease (OCD) unexpectedly ends up in a transformative courting with a 22-yr-old transgender barista.

Columbus References In Popular Culture
This page is dedicated to fictional works which have either been set in or referenced dear old Columbus, or else nonfictional ones which mention our fair city, though not entirely set here (if interested in documents which were actually created here, and/or by C-bus residents, see my “C-bus Artifacts” tab instead). Many of these occurred when the city was even more obscure than it is now, and therefore felt all the more bizarre:
100% Fresh – Adam Sandler (stand up comedy special). This Netflix offering was filmed in part at the Schottenstein Center. I haven’t seen it but the one pun I’ve heard about calling this the “Schlongenstein Center” sounds pretty lame. Amazingly, enough, however, considering it came out in 2018, this received some fairly strong Rotten Tomato scores – although the weirdest aspect might be that Paul Thomas Anderson filmed part of it. Then again, that could explain the robust reviews.
Family Ties – (TV series). Unless I’m missing something, they don’t come right out of the gate declaring where this sitcom family lives. Having said that, you’re immediately aware that the series has a very Ohio-ish feel to it – someone involved with the show’s creation clearly must have been from here. Many of us thought it completely mindblowing that there was a girl named Jenny Keaton at our school. Elise even kind of reminded me of my stepmom at the time. But I don’t actually remember anyone making a big deal of or for that matter even noticing at the time that this show was supposed to be set in this neck of the woods, probably due to this slow reveal.
As I begin binge watching the seasons, the first Ohio reference I notice at all doesn’t occur until episode 4. This older chick’s trying to seduce Alex and he’s attempting to cool her down with jokes about the Cleveland Indians (safe to say this was a suitably frosty topic circa 1982). And I don’t detect even an oblique mention of Columbus until the 6th episode, when one of Steven’s coworkers jokes about filming Woody Hayes’s house for half an hour. It’s a funny line on its own, but assumes a whole other surreal luster if you are actually watching the episodes in order and have no clue about their location.
Over time, it’s eventually established that Steven works at the Columbus PBS station. Though everyone in my family seemed to agree that he was the funniest character on the show, Alex became the breakout star and it probably explains why Michael J. Fox was the token celebrity here for Hands Across America. Rumors began to surface that the show’s creators had the Bexley area in mind when crafting this timeless family comedy, but, I don’t know, it doesn’t really look like Bexley to me. I’m thinking more like the older parts of Upper Arlington, or possibly Gahanna.
Other references of note:
Season 2, Episode 4 – Mallory receives a letter from the (fictional, as far as I know) Columbus Express newspaper saying she won this mother/daughter modeling contest, and will be featured in the Sunday supplement.
Season 2, Episode 12 – Steven says he hopes to catch the OSU-Iowa game on TV. This would have been the 1983 season. Just for entertainment value I looked up the result of this particular contest – the Buckeyes lost, 20-14, falling to a 2-1 record on the year. In the actual episode, OSU is down 16-12 on the final play of the game and this bratty kid Steven’s babysitting messes up his reception.
Season 2, Episode 14 – Tom Hanks guest stars for the 2nd time as Elise’s brother. Considering that he’s a wee bit too fond of drink these days, the family convinces him to call AA. Upon doing so, he initially makes a lame joke to the receptionist, about selling her a subscription to the Columbus Express.
This is as far as I’ve made it thus far with my binge watching research. However, this topic seems so urgent that I’m rushing to press with what I’ve got. Expect continual reports as I work through all 7 seasons.
Little Man Tate – (movie). While mostly filmed in Cincinnati, some Columbus footage is shot and makes the cut. Found among these scenes are the Wexner Center for the Arts, and downtown’s Ohio Theatre.
Our Towns – James and Deborah Fallows (nonfiction book): It’s kind of a murky, unformed premise, and I also found their writing style a little dull. But this husband and wife duo decide to fly themselves around, checking out what makes certain “small towns” in America tick. Of course even they admit it’s a bit ridiculous to refer to Columbus as a small town, although they usually don’t clarify what criteria made them choose which places, Columbus included. There’s a moderately informative chat with former mayor Michael Coleman, and the library director and a couple of other figures around town, but I wouldn’t really call this a highly engaging read.
Permanent Midnight – Jerry Stahl (memoir): This is a thoroughly engrossing read on its own, as a well-known screenwriter documents his struggles with drug addiction. The Columbus parts all occur early in the book, and are fun for different reasons, as he chronicles his early days working for Hustler magazine (I had no idea it started here, until reading this) while living at a YMCA here in C-bus.
Point Break: Who among us can ever possibly forget that Keanu Reeves’s character, the immortal Johnny Utah, is a quarterback for Ohio State before blowing out his knee, and therefore joining the FBI?
Ready Player One: The novel sets some of the action in Columbus, especially along High Street, but these references feel a little hokey and unnecessary. For the film version, Steven Spielberg decided to move the hero’s home to Columbus entirely, which might be arbitrary but is also less awkward. If I had to hazard a guess as to where The Stacks would be located, I’m going with Marble Cliff. Somewhere around that whole quarry area et cetera on McKinley Avenue.
Road Outside Columbus – O.A.R. (song). Of A Revolution are a curious case. The four original members formed this band and even released a couple of albums while still living in Maryland – and then all four of them moved here to attend OSU, adding a fifth member while doing so. They played out a ton while in school here, and were a popular draw, as I remember for example the girl who lived next door to us was majorly into them, she and all her friends. They were constantly going out to see this band play in bars all around town. Still, having said that, I don’t consider them a Columbus band. To my knowledge they never recorded any music here. I can see the argument both ways, but it feels more like an extended residency.
Road Outside Columbus has to be the best song I’ve heard from them. It’s a pleasant, catchy, Dave Matthews style jam from their 2003 album, In Between Now And Then. The subject matter is fairly obvious as Marc Roberge sings about having found his second home, though only living here a short while, even namechecking Riverside Drive and High Street in the process. And actually I think these lyrics even bolster my case that they are technically not a Columbus band, seem to be admitting as much themselves.
Roadshow – Neil Peart (nonfiction book): This really entertaining and in-depth document, written by the drummer for rock legends Rush, chronicles his decision to travel from show to show on the 2004 tour via motorcycle. He briefly mentions a show at Polaris, though no details are provided. Apparently has some family living just outside of Columbus, though, and he visits that Motorcycle Hall Of Fame in Pickerington.
The Simpsons – (TV series). Season 29’s Grampy Can You Hear Me episode is partially set at OSU. It mentions Brutus Buckeye and there’s a scene depicting the Oval.
“The Soul Is Not A Smithy” – David Foster Wallace (short story). In this tale from the Oblivion collection, a 4th grade teacher suffers a meltdown and takes hostages. I remember the kid narrating it mentions goofing around along the Olentangy River. Also trying to decide where this fictional school would be located, based upon the vague descriptions, and figuring that it must be in Upper Arlington, somewhere around Reed Road.
Teachers – (movie). This inner city school drama was filmed entirely here in town. It’s an okay if somewhat cheesy flick mostly recommended to those interested in spotting landmarks around town, and/or Nick Nolte fans. The soundtrack is probably better.
Traffic – (movie). Some of the scenes were filmed in Columbus, I think all of them downtown. Back in their snarky, pre-Dispatch ownership days, The Other Paper ran a pretty comical piece detailing how Michael Douglas successfully avoided them while filming.
Vitale – Dick Vitale (memoir). OSU had never enjoyed much of a basketball program as of this book’s creation in the late 1980’s. Nonetheless, Dick predicts that freshly minted coach Gary Williams will elevate the Buckeyes to regular top ten threats and national title contenders. Williams lasts three seasons, displaying very little of this alleged prowess.
