I just remembered that it’s actually canon that Matt and Mikey are on the phone for hours, bc when Mikey drives to Matt after killing Hunter he’s on the phone with Matt all the way up there,, these two istg 🥹

Matt hugs him when he arrives!!! He does everything he can to help Mikey feel safe! He gives him everything he has, even though he doesn't have much!

Imagine having a falling out with your closest friend for a few years and then just when you two are coming back into contact, he calls you up in a panic, crying and screaming into the phone about something he did - for all you know he could've just killed someone in his new government job from the way he's been acting but you don't care you let him into your home anyway because he was your best friend and you still care about him so much!!

do you ever think that matt has dreams about dying.

like— he doesn't sleep well, never has, and he hates those minutes where you're torn between wake and sleep because his ears don't stop ringing, but eventually he drifts off and it's fine. after mike saved him, he almost never dreams at all, or he never remembers it once he wakes up. he thinks he's too exhausted. (mike half-jokes that maybe it's some sort of trauma response. neither of them laugh.)

sleeping alone gets harder and harder but mike refuses to make a place for him at base, saying he needs to keep matt safe, that he needs him to stay in vancouver, ignoring the fact that matt doesn't feel safe in vancouver now, not since before mustardseed. he tries not to sleep when it's dark out, instead spending his nights camped out in the bushes outside mdawg and edman's house. it's a waste of time, really, but it's better than waking up in a cold sweat, almost tasting blood in his mouth and reliving a death that never happened.

after mustardseed, matt can't stop dreaming. more often than not, he wakes up in the dead of night with tears in his eyes and a bolt of terror still twisting violently in his chest. he calls mike, sometimes. (he feels guilty, because he knows that now he's bothering edgar too.) he tells mike in one of their middle-of-the-night phone calls that he can't stop remembering the accident. the screech of tires and metal-on-metal and so many sirens, flashes of red-and-blue light through closed eyes, pain so all-encompassing that he felt more hurt than human.

he tells mike that, sometimes, he's not sure if all of this was even worth it. (he doesn't point out that the all of this is mike's fault. that, if he fought so hard to save matt then, why it doesn't make any sense that dooming him to the fringes is actually a good option now.) mike's whispered apology streams from the line and matt pretends not to hear edgar's half-asleep questions of who mike was talking to while he checks his pulse. mike doesn't—can't—talk long anymore, and after clipped goodbyes, matt is left standing in the kitchen, alone, alive, knowing what it feels like to be dead.

mike walters and matt woe.begone are the best childhood friends to lovers dynamic ever. listen;

they're maybe fourteen years old, halfway through a summer spent between one another's houses, starting fires in the pit behind matt's house and chasing mike's dog down the street whenever it got out of the yard.

they're fourteen years old and best friends and then mike kisses matt behind the old train depot on the edge of town and it means something neither can quite place.

years of hands clasped underneath blankets when they watch horror movies in the fall and lingering touches and smiles when they pass a mug of hot chocolate in the wintertime and bumping shoulders when they wander through the state park hiking trails the next spring.

it's something and it's nameless, maybe, but it's all they have.

it's enough to get then into trouble, even.

they're seventeen and scared of the world and matt gets cornered in the baseball locker room, bitter words and no way to escape and he leaves with more than a few bruises and blood running from his nose.

middle-of-nowhere towns have never promised anything good so they get out as soon as they can, living in a rundown apartment in the city and working their way through college.

sometimes, in the evenings, mike convinces matt to get out his guitar and play through some half-remembered song they remember from growing up and from early-morning drives in mike's pickup, endless stretches of highway between their hometown and the city.

eventually they drift apart in the way most people do and matt still remembers mike's number even though he never calls it, and mike thinks of matt every time he finds his way back to their college town and then he is left to mourn someone that never really died, left with the heavy weight of the blood on his hands, a reminder of the things he would do to keep matt safe.

They went to soccer practice together and he still remembers the phone number to Matt's house decades later !!!!!

the implication that Mikey must have called that number so many times to remember it right away makes me SICK!!!!!

last night I listened to eps 54 of wbg and it’s mentioned that Mikey listens to brown noises aaaand I immediately had to think about your post where you mentioned that Matt listens to those to fall asleep to,,,, and now my mattkey brain is like who showed who the brown noise??? was Mikey recommending it to Matt bc he wanted his to help him get a restful sleep??? AHHHHHHHHHH

It was mentioned in episode 36 (specifically Mikey waking up screaming and then later asking Matt if he heard anything, and Matt telling him that he doesn't hear much because he listens to brown noise when he sleeps)

Buuut I really love how from there on, Mikey mentions listening to it a bunch, especially when they go and build Base. Like, his friend mentioned something that helps him sleep and it's just little thing but even months later, Mikey has adopted this small habit of Matt's and is using it in his everyday life.

And that's what woe.begone is all about, baby!! The small yet permanent ways in which Matt's presence in Mikey's life shaped him!!

Hm honestly I think the biggest most recent example is Mattkey! I hadn't really thought of it very much but after reading your fic I'm a billion % onboard it's a really good pairing in a lot of capacities. ESPECIALLY with the whole Mikey trying to convince him and kill him bunches and bunches of times 😩

Probably that Jon and Daisy are buddies. They hang out bunches, they get along, they share a cigarette, and there will always be a wound between them.

I was gonna out Ty also and for a lot of the same reasons you did I also like that he's a slut for bureaucracy but to keep it interesting I will put another different bureaucratic slut that I love: Elias Bouchard<3 he is Evil and Bad and he gets everything that he wants <3

Fanfic Writers: Director’s Cut

so, it started out from an ask game that was like "give me a lyric and I'll tell you what kind of fic I'd write with that title", and Finch sent in that. and him and I were already on an angsty Mattkey kick in the DMs, so it was on my mind.

Safehouse and Respite are two of my favorite early episodes and I really love the relationship they have where, no questions asked, Matt took him in. There's a couple lines talking about how Mikey didn't feel he deserved it, and how it was the house he killed Matt in, but I really felt like digging into that a bit more—I totally get why it wasn't addressed more in the ep, but that's one of the things fanfic is for lol, digging into things the show doesn't!

I had this idea of 'haunted house, but you're the one haunting it'. And it was very reminiscent to like, my own experience going back and living in a place that something very traumatic happened. It's always there, when you least expect it you turn around and it's like it happening again. And in canon even though it never it happened, it did once, and the remnants of that would remain (even if only in Mikey's head). All those disparate pieces fit together nicely and the fic just, happened haha

also not to toot my own horn but I really like the following line lol

He went skyrocketing past ‘giggly and distracted’ to ‘trapped in his own head’, which was the last place Mike Walters ever wanted to be.
