That video is hilarious, and endearing, not only because all the rookies are flocking towards Max like baby ducklings to their mama, but Lando is there in the back like 'oh, no, I'm being replaced' 😂

I need to know if Max turned up in Miami with gifts for his grid kids to remind them that he still loves them all even though the new baby is here.

ofc i find out that Tiresus has his own missions at 90% of the awakening level
#hablaty#uhhh okay to explain the point of wh: mechanicus is that you explore a tomb network#the more you fuck around in the tombs the higher the awakening level gets#when the meter maxes out then the time for the final mission and decisions comes#and the different crew members have their own missions the more of them you complete the more of their storyline you get to see#so ugh#tbh i wouldn't mind starting over for the lad he's a funky archeaologist/linguist/biologist#so ofc i imprinted on him like a baby duckling the moment he showed up#i just wish they didn't hide his missions on the main UI bc it's frustrating#but it's also typical of him to ping you through the noosphere that he wants to talk instead of just... going to the command deck

White Horse - Chapter 13: February 2024 - Part 1
Pairing: Max Verstappen x Isabelle Leclerc (Original Character)
Summary:
Max Verstappen is a World Champion. Isabelle Leclerc is invisible.
She watched her family give up everything for Charles’ career—Arthur’s karting, their father’s savings, even her childhood horse. She understood. She never asked for more.
But Max does. He notices the things no one else does, listens when no one else will, and puts her first in ways she never imagined. With him, she isn’t an afterthought—she’s a choice. And for the first time, she realizes she doesn’t have to be invisible.
Warnings and Notes:
we have now moved on from Charles bashing to bashing his whole family, Discussions of toxic past relationships, talk about loosing a childhood pet, toxic families, Me trying to write therapy sessions, Oscar being a lost little duckling, Lando being a feral street cat, Brocedes in the year 2024? Sebastian Vettel making a guest appearance just for myself.
As always big thanks to @llirawolf , who listens to me ramble

Text Conversation: Max Verstappen & Oscar Piastri
Max: You free tonight?
Oscar: uh I think so? Why?
Max: come to dinner.
Oscar: …okay? Where?
Max: Our place. 7pm. We’re already feeding Lando. And Belle adopted you.
Oscar: I’m honored? I think?
Max: Good. Bring your appetite. And maybe patience.
Max: Lando’s already being dramatic about it.
Oscar: What’s new?
Max: Exactly. See you at 7.
***
Oscar showed up at Max and Belle’s apartment at 7:02 p.m., clutching a bottle of wine he wasn't sure they'd need and trying not to look like he was afraid.
The door opened before he could even knock properly.
Max stood there, expression dry. "Two minutes late. Tragic."
Oscar grinned sheepishly. "Traffic?"
Max just shook his head, stepping aside to let him in.
The second he entered, Oscar spotted Lando sprawled on the couch, dramatically claiming all the cushions like some sort of feral housecat.
One of the actual cats was glaring at him from the armrest.
Belle appeared from the kitchen, wiping her hands on a towel, smiling when she saw Oscar. "Hey, you made it."
Oscar relaxed immediately. "Wouldn’t miss it."
"You’re brave," Belle teased, nodding toward Lando. "He’s been sulking for half an hour."
"I’m not sulking!" Lando yelped from the couch. "I’m... emotionally preparing!"
"For what?" Oscar asked, genuinely curious.
He looked up and immediately pointed accusingly.
"Traitor!" Lando said dramatically. "You got adopted before me!"
Oscar grinned and dropped into the seat across from him. "Not my fault you’re unadoptable."
Max, passing by with a plate of food, muttered under his breath, "Natural selection."
Belle rolled her eyes fondly and started setting plates on the table.
Oscar stood up to help without even thinking about it — grabbing forks, glasses, anything she pointed at — and Lando immediately protested.
"Hey! No stealing points! That’s cheating!"
Oscar grinned. "Skill issue, mate."
"You are SUCH a teacher's pet," Lando groaned dramatically, as he came to help as well.
Max dropped down into a chair at the table with a smirk. "You're both insufferable."
Belle just smiled, utterly unbothered, moving around the kitchen like this chaos was completely normal.
Oscar, trailing after her as they finished getting everything ready, cleared his throat awkwardly.
"Hey, uh," he said under his breath. "Quick question."
Belle turned, eyebrow raised. "Yeah?"
Oscar rubbed the back of his neck, feeling about twelve years old. "Heard you freelance now? Like, design stuff?"
Belle nodded. "Architecture and interiors. Why?"
Oscar winced. "Hypothetically... if someone's apartment was a complete catastrophe... and that someone’s girlfriend was visiting Monaco in two weeks... could I, uh... hire you? Like, officially?"
Belle blinked, then smiled — warm and kind. "Oscar."
"I’ll pay!" he blurted out. "Or like... buy you coffee. Or cat toys."
Belle laughed, soft and musical.
"You don’t have to pay me," she said. "I’ll help you."
Oscar sagged in relief.
Belle just shook her head, grabbing the last plate and nudging Oscar toward the table. "Sit. Eat. We’ll save your apartment later."
Oscar smiled, warm and easy.
This — this ridiculous, chaotic little world — It felt like home already.
***
When Belle showed up at his apartment, Oscar knew he was in trouble.
She stepped inside with a tote bag slung over her shoulder — full of measuring tape, a notebook, a fabric swatch or two — and immediately gave the whole place a slow, assessing once-over.
Oscar stood awkwardly in the middle of the mess, like a defendant waiting for sentencing.
Belle didn’t say anything at first. She just exhaled, long and low, and shook her head fondly.
"We have work to do," she said, setting her bag down with finality.
Oscar smiled, a little helplessly. "I know."
And then she took over — completely.
Belle moved through the apartment like a general, gentle but utterly in control. She measured walls, vetoed half the sad furniture he tried to keep, drew rough sketches of new layouts.
"No," she said calmly when he pointed at a sad, lumpy chair. "That’s not a chair. That’s a health hazard."
"But it’s vintage—" Oscar tried.
"It’s a crime," Belle corrected, utterly unfazed.
Oscar found himself trailing after her, nodding obediently as she rattled off notes: "We’ll need a new rug. A real lamp. You’re getting curtains, Oscar, not just sticking paper over the windows like a college student."
It should have been overwhelming. But Belle made it easy — light, funny, somehow never making him feel stupid for needing the help.
And somewhere in the middle of hauling a sad, broken coffee table toward the door, Oscar realized:
She’s so nice.
Not the fake kind of nice — not the "I’m being polite because I have to" nice. The real kind. The kind you didn’t earn — the kind she just gave, freely and without asking anything back.
It hit him harder than he expected.
And for the life of him, Oscar couldn’t understand — How could her brothers not see it?
Later, while they sat on the floor eating sandwiches she had packed ("I didn’t trust your fridge," Belle had said, deadpan), Oscar glanced over at her.
She was perched against the wall, hair falling into her face, sketching something in the notebook balanced on her knees.
"Can I ask you something?" he said before he could second-guess it.
Belle looked up, curious. "Of course."
"Why are you helping me?" he asked, voice low. "You don’t have to. I’m not your responsibility."
Belle smiled — small and real.
"When I moved to Paris," she said, "for university, I didn’t know anyone. I was eighteen. Scared. Completely overwhelmed."
Oscar stayed quiet, listening.
"I met my best friend Emilie my second week at Sorbonne," Belle continued. "She saw me drop all my books in the metro. Helped me pick them up. And then — without even asking — she took me under her wing." Belle’s voice softened, threading with something warm. "She showed me the little things. How to find the good groceries. Where to get a real coffee. Which bus routes were safe late at night."
She smiled faintly. "She saved me, in a way. Made Paris feel like home."
Oscar felt something ache in his chest.
"And when I asked her why," Belle said, looking back down at her notebook, "Emilie said: 'Because someone should.'"
Oscar swallowed hard.
"And now," Belle added, glancing up at him, "I guess... I just think everyone deserves that. Especially people like you."
Oscar laughed, soft and stunned. "What, hopeless cases?"
Belle’s smile widened. "No. Good ones."
Oscar looked at her — really looked at her — sitting cross-legged on his floor, sleeves pushed up, caramel hair catching the light from the window.
He thought about how easy it would be for her to be selfish. How the world hadn’t exactly been kind to her, but she still chose to be kind anyway.
"Thanks, Belle," he said quietly.
She just smiled, like it was the easiest thing in the world. Like giving kindness was as natural as breathing.
And Oscar realized — maybe it was, for people like her.

Nico Rosberg liked the quiet of the stables just outside Monaco.
It was one of the few places in Monaco where people didn’t care who he was — just another dad holding juice boxes and brushing mud off boots.
The stables had become something of a second home on weekends in the off-season.
His daughters loved their riding lessons — loved the ponies, the hay-scented air, the thrill of mastering the trot.
Nico leaned against the fence, arms crossed, sipping a coffee, watching them finish their class.
He smiled when he saw the younger one waving excitedly at someone near the paddock entrance.
There she was.
The woman both his daughters constantly talked about.
"Belle helps me with my pony!"
"Belle makes the best braids!"
"Belle said I did the best two-point position today!"
Isabelle Leclerc.
Nico had pieced it together after the second or third lesson — the soft-spoken young woman who occasionally helped at the stables wasn’t just any Monaco local.
She was Charles Leclerc’s sister.
Though you wouldn’t know it from her.
No airs. No attitude.
Just patience, steady encouragement, and a laugh that made the kids beam with pride when she said they did something well.
Today, she knelt beside his youngest daughter, adjusting the stirrup leathers with careful hands, chatting easily as the girl nodded along solemnly.
Nico smiled to himself.
He liked her — genuinely liked her.
There was a calmness to her he rarely saw.
He was about to wave when he caught movement from the corner of his eye — someone slipping through the stable gates with practiced ease.
Max Verstappen.
Not in race gear.
Not in Red Bull blue.
Just jeans and a hoodie, baseball cap covering his messy hair.
Nico blinked.
Max? Here?
He looked... easy. Comfortable.
Especially when Isabelle turned, spotted him, and lit up with a smile that could have powered half of Monaco.
Max’s whole face changed at the sight of her. Softened. Brightened.
He walked straight to her, not hesitating, crouching to say something that made her laugh — that small, quiet laugh Nico had seen his daughters light up over.
Max reached out, brushed a stray piece of hay from her hair like it was instinct.
Nico straightened slowly against the fence, eyebrows raising.
Oh.
Oh.
He watched for a moment longer, unnoticed.
Watched how Max’s hand lingered at the small of Isabelle’s back.
Watched how easily she leaned into him, unthinking.
Not new.
Not casual.
Something steady.
One of Nico’s daughters came running up, cheeks flushed with excitement. "Papa! Belle said I can ride Daisy next week!"
"That’s wonderful,," Nico said, ruffling her hair. "Did you say thank you?"
"Yes!" she beamed.
He gave her a kiss on the forehead, sent her back toward the stables, and took a slow sip of his coffee, considering.
Later, as Max drifted closer — probably spotting him now that the initial magnet pull toward Isabelle had worn off — Nico met him with a knowing smile.
"Max," Nico said lightly. "Didn’t know you were into ponies."
Max shrugged, the barest smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "I’m into her."
Nico chuckled under his breath. "Figured."
Max shoved his hands deeper into his pockets, eyes never leaving Isabelle, who was now kneeling to show a little girl how to buckle a bridle properly.
"My daughters adore her," Nico said after a beat. "Apparently ‘Belle’ is the best teacher they’ve ever had."
Max smiled then — properly, fully — something so rare and genuine that Nico almost did a double take.
"Yeah," Max said, voice low. "They’re not wrong."
They stood there for a moment, two men who had seen the brutal side of fame and pressure, silently agreeing that this — this quiet, real thing — was worth a hell of a lot more.
"Charles know?" Nico asked eventually, curious but gentle.
Max huffed a dry laugh. "No."
Nico winced. "Oof."
Max shrugged, unbothered. "Doesn’t matter. She’s mine."
There was no arrogance in the words.
Just certainty.
Steel wrapped in something terrifyingly soft.
Nico smiled slightly. "Good. Don’t lose that."
"I won’t," Max said simply.
Isabelle looked up then, spotting them across the arena.
She gave a small wave, smiling — easy and bright, like the sun slipping through the clouds.
Later, Nico watched Max head back toward the barn, where Isabelle was helping the younger kids put away their helmets, her hair half-falling out of her braid, her cheeks pink with the cool air.
Max didn’t even look at anyone else.
Max was watching Isabelle the way Nico watched Vivian — with a kind of unconscious gravity, like the rest of the world had blurred out and there was only her left.
And Isabelle — She looked up, caught Max’s eye, and smiled again — soft, sure, like she knew exactly where he’d always end up.
Nico shook his head fondly and muttered under his breath, "The paddock is not ready for this."

Text Conversation: Isabelle Leclerc & Oscar Piastri
Oscar: Hi Oscar: sorry to bug you again Oscar: But can i ask for another favor?
Isabelle: Hi Oscar Isabelle: you’re never bugging me Isabelle: what’s up?
Oscar: Do you have any good restaurant recommendations for Valentine’s day? like... somewhere actually nice but not stupidly touristy?
Isabelle: You’re planning a Valentine’s dinner?
Oscar: Yeah. First one in Monaco… I want it to be good
Isabelle: That’s really sweet.
Oscar: I’ve got a short list already. I just need your opinion because Lando’s advice was (quoting here) “idk just get pasta or something, she’ll live”
Isabelle: oh my god
Oscar: I know
Isabelle: Send me your list. I’ll help you pick.
Oscar: Maison Bleue, Le Petit Bar or maybe that little italian place near the flower market?
Isabelle: All good choices!! Isabelle: I would lean Maison Bleue Isabelle: It’s a little quieter, more romantic
Oscar: Perfect, thank you!! Also already got her a necklace so I’m like 90% prepared, only panicking a little bit.
Isabelle: You’re more prepared than 99% of people I know (cough my brothers cough)
Oscar: …Do they not plan?
Isabelle: They just expect me to plan everything. Birthdays, anniversaries, mother’s day, sometimes their friends' birthdays too.
Oscar: ... that’s awful.
Isabelle: It’s nice that you asked and that you already had ideas. I am not used to that.
Oscar: Of course? You’re helping me. It’s the least I can do to be a human about it.
Isabelle: You’re a very good human, Oscar
Oscar: You’re a very good human, too, Belle.
****
It started with a text.
Arthur: Isabelle HELP I forgot to book anything for valentine’s day what do i do
Then Lorenzo chimed in.
Lorenzo: Hey, can you find a florist for me? Everything’s sold out.
And then Charles, predictably, a minute later.
Charles:Can you order something for Alex? I don’t know what she likes.
Isabelle stared at the group chat, feeling that familiar, sick tightening in her stomach.
They just assumed she would fix it — like she always did.
No hello, no how are you, no are you busy.
Just Isabelle, save us.
She set the phone down on the counter carefully, like it might explode.
Max was leaning against the stove, stirring something in a pot. He looked up when he saw her face.
"What's wrong?"
Isabelle opened her mouth. Closed it again.
And then, quietly: "They want me to fix Valentine’s Day for them."
Max didn’t say anything for a second. Just studied her, like he already knew she was about to go to war with herself.
"You don’t have to," he said softly.
"But if I don’t—" she started, and stopped, clenching her hands into fists. "If I don’t, they’ll be upset. Or disappointed. Or say I’m selfish."
Max set the spoon down carefully, wiped his hands on a towel, and crossed the kitchen to her.
He took her face in his hands, gentle but firm.
"Belle," he said, voice steady. "You are not responsible for their girlfriends' happiness."
Tears pricked behind her eyes. She hated how easily they came now, how raw she always felt lately.
But Max didn’t flinch. Didn’t rush her.
"You deserve to have a Valentine’s Day too," he said. "You deserve to put yourself first."
Isabelle nodded, shaky, terrified — but somehow, deep down, she knew he was right.
She picked up her phone with trembling fingers and, for once, instead of making excuses or softening the blow, she just… said the truth.
Isabelle: I’m sorry, but I’m not available to help this time. Good luck.
She hit send before she could overthink it, before she could drown in the guilt.
There was a long, aching silence.
Then Arthur's message popped up.
Arthur: seriously? wow. okay then.
And another from Charles.
Charles: Nice. Thanks for nothing.
And Lorenzo, icing on the cake.
Lorenzo:Guess we know who we can count on.
The shame hit her hard and fast, brutal in a way only family could manage.
She set the phone down again and braced her hands against the counter, breathing hard, fighting not to crumple.
Max didn’t say I told you so.
He didn’t say they’re assholes, even though she could see it in his eyes.
He just moved behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his chin lightly on her shoulder.
"You did the right thing," he murmured against her skin. "I’m proud of you."
Isabelle choked on a laugh that was half sob, half relief.
"But they’re mad."
"So let them be mad," Max said. "You’re not their secretary. You’re not responsible for their poor planning."
She turned in his arms, burying her face in his chest, breathing him in. Steady. Solid. Hers.
"It hurts," she whispered.
"I know," he said. "But hurting doesn’t mean you did the wrong thing. Sometimes it just means you’re finally doing the right thing."
He rubbed her back in slow circles, patient and sure.
"You’re allowed to choose yourself," Max said. "Every time."
And Isabelle, standing there in their kitchen, wrapped in his arms, knew: This was what real love looked like.
Not demands.
Not expectations.
Not conditional approval.
Just acceptance.
Just safety.
Just Max.

Team Redline Stream – Transcript
Stream starts, usual chatter as the guys set up for the race.
Luke: “Alright, so Valentine’s Day is in two days. Anyone got plans?”
Gianni Vecchio: “Uh—”
Chris Lulham: “Define ‘plans.’”
Gianni: “I mean… I’ll figure something out.”
Luke: “That means no one has done anything.”
Max: already annoyed Useless. All of you.”
Chris: “Oh, and you have plans then?”
Max: “Of course. What kind of question is that? I love my girlfriend.”
Twitch chat:
• here we go again
• max “i love my girlfriend” verstappen strikes
• the way this man is always 10 steps ahead
• someone check on the team redline WAGs
Gianni: groaning “Okay, yeah, we get it, you’re in love.”
Max: “No, because seriously—why do so many guys just assume their girlfriend or wife or mother or sister will handle everything? How is that cute? It’s embarrassing.”
Gianni: laughs “Tell us how you really feel.”
Max: “I will. Because it’s not just Valentine’s Day. It’s all the time. Birthdays, holidays, family events—who does all the planning? Who buys the gifts? Who remembers every single thing? The women. And the men just show up, say ‘Oh nice,’ and then act like they had anything to do with it.”
Chris: “Alright, I feel personally attacked.”
Max: “Good. Do something about it.”
Twitch chat:
• he’s SO MAD HELP
• he’s right and he should say it
• max verstappen, feminist king??
• every girlfriend watching this is nodding
Gianni: whistles “This is… a lot of feelings.”
Max: not done yet “No, because I’ve seen it firsthand, and it pisses me off. You know how many times I’ve watched someone handle everything for the people in their life and not even get a thank you? Not even acknowledged? Like it’s just expected? They do it because they care, but no one ever stops to think, ‘Oh, maybe they’d like to feel appreciated too.’” And if they for once don’t do it, the passive aggressiveness is through the roof, because they take it for fucking granted! It’s actually pathetic. Like, you are an adult, but you can’t book a damn dinner reservation? You need your sister to do that for you?!
Gianni: “Oh, this is personal-personal.”
Max: “Of course it’s personal! I see it happen to people I care about all the time. They put in so much effort and get nothing back. Their family forgets things that matter to them, just assumes they’ll be fine with it. Do you know how awful that is? To love people who don’t even notice when you’re hurting?”
Twitch chat:
• nah bc this just got too real
• someone in max’s life is NOT getting enough love and he’s fighting for their life rn
• blinking twice for the mystery girlfriend rn

Chris: nervous laughter “Uh… yeah, that sucks.”
Max: flatly “Yeah. It does.”
Gianni: “I feel like I should be taking notes.”
Max: “You should.”
Luke: “So… are you gonna tell us what you planned?”
Max: “No.”
Gianni: “So you’re out here preaching about effort but won’t give us ideas?”
Max: “Correct.”
Chris: “You’re actually evil.”
Max: smirking “Maybe.”
Race starts. Max wins, because of course he does.
Twitch chat:
• he went on a 10-minute rant then destroyed everyone on track. classic

Meanwhile on Twitter:
@/F1GossipQueen: Max Verstappen just went on a full-on TED Talk during the Team Redline stream about how men need to step up and actually plan things for the women in their lives. I have NEVER seen him this passionate about anything that isn’t racing.
@/LandoStan_4: Nah, because the way he said, “It’s not even just about Valentine’s Day or girlfriends or wives, it’s always the women in families doing all the planning and never getting a thank you,” like he had a PERSONAL vendetta.
@/softverstappen: Who hurt you, Max??
@/F1memes_daily: Max Verstappen when he thinks about men who make their wives and girlfriends or mothers or sisters plan every holiday, birthday, anniversary, and social event: [insert exploding volcano meme]
@/GridTea: I swear he was holding back from name-dropping someone specific. The frustration was too real.
@/ChaosLeclerc: The way he said, “You are an adult, but you can’t book a dinner reservation?” sir who are you calling out.
@/TireDeg_33: I’m telling you, his mysterious girlfriend is fighting for her LIFE against the invisible burden of being the only responsible one in her family.
@/AloNorrisFan: The man really said, “Bare minimum behavior is NOT cute,” and you know what? He’s so right.
@/DR3Honeybadger: Max Verstappen being the voice of reason for women everywhere was not on my 2024 bingo card.
@/F1_WAGwatch: We all joke about ‘wife guy’ Max, but this just confirmed it. He’s SO in love and he’s SO annoyed on her behalf.
@/PitLaneDrama: This was NOT a general take. This was deeply personal. Whoever she is, she’s got this man READY TO FIGHT.
@/MaxFanClub: Honestly, this is the kind of energy we need from men. He called out half the grid without even naming names.
@/RedBullBesties: Lmao Max really said, “Bare minimum? Embarrassing. Do better.”
@/UndercutStrategy: His girlfriend better be watching this like [insert smug cat meme] because she’s got the reigning world champion out here advocating for her rights.
@/McLarenChaos: I need to know what triggered this. Did someone in his friend group forget a birthday? Did he overhear some teammate say “my girl will plan it” and see red??
@/F1DetectiveAgency: There’s a bigger mystery here… who IS she, and why does Max Verstappen love her so much that he’s out here calling out society???
@/FormulaLover: Max really said, “Love is about effort,” and I’m gonna need the men on this app to take notes.
@/DR3Always: He was talking to someone SPECIFIC. You can’t tell me this was just a general rant. He had receipts.
@/VerstappenSimp33: Max Verstappen, voice of the people. Advocate for women everywhere. A true feminist icon.
@/F1Detectives: There’s something SO funny about Max Verstappen, of all people, being the one to passionately call out the mental load women carry in relationships.
@/RedBullF1Fan: I’ve never seen a man so aggressively pro-Valentine’s Day.
@/SassyTauri: Max out here unionizing girlfriends.
@/F1WAGWatch: This man is SO IN LOVE. He literally said “She deserves effort” with his whole chest.
@/TireDegGOAT: Imagine being his girlfriend watching this like “Yes, my man, drag them.”
@/Undercut_Stan: Petition for Max to start a relationship advice podcast.
@/RedBullGirlies:Max Verstappen: F1 World Champion, Cat Dad, and now the internet’s unexpected Feminist Icon.
@/PaddockSpy: We don’t know who she is, but she’s got this man out here EDUCATING the masses.

Lily wasn’t exactly worried, flying into Monaco to visit Oscar for Valentine’s Day — but she was... curious.
Very curious.
She loved Oscar — loved his quiet steadiness, his dry humor, the way he texted her good morning no matter what timezone he was in.
But decorating had never exactly been his strong suit.
When he said "I’m settling into the apartment pretty well!" over FaceTime a few weeks ago, she’d had... doubts.
Mild, loving doubts.
Visions of mattress-on-the-floor bachelor chaos danced in her head.
So when she walked into his place for the first time — duffel bag still slung over her shoulder — she stopped dead just inside the door.
Blinking.
Staring.
The living room actually... looked good.
There was a real couch.
Matching throw pillows.
A soft rug that didn’t look like it came free with a video game console.
Curtains that actually matched the walls.
Fresh flowers on the kitchen island.
It was— it was warm. It looked like a home.
She turned slowly to Oscar, who was hovering nervously behind her, hands stuffed in his pockets.
"You did this," she said slowly. It wasn’t exactly a question. More like an accusation.
Oscar flushed. "Well... sort of."
She narrowed her eyes, stepping further inside. "Oscar. Be honest."
He rubbed the back of his neck, sheepish. "I had help."
Lily folded her arms. "Yeah, no kidding. This has woman’s touch written all over it."
Oscar winced. "Belle helped."
Lily blinked. “Belle?
"Isabelle Leclerc."Oscar answered, grinning now. "Charles’ sister."
Lily remembered her vaguely — a soft smile, a quiet presence tucked in the corners of the paddock. Kind, but easy to miss if you weren’t paying attention.
"Do I need to be worried?" Lily joked lightly, bumping his hip.
Oscar laughed so hard he nearly dropped her suitcase.
"Trust me," he said, still grinning, "you don’t. I think she adopted me. Like... another cat."
Lily snorted.
Oscar leaned against the wall, arms crossed. "Besides, I don’t have three Drivers’ Championships and a fleet of cats. I’m not her type."
Lily stared at him. Oscar just raised one eyebrow. “Isabelle Leclerc and Max Verstappen?” Lily said, surprise colouring her voice.
“Absolutely besotted with each other” Oscar said with a laugh. “And he’s good for her.”
"You like her," Lily said after a beat, softer now. "Not like that — but you like her."
Oscar nodded immediately.
"Yeah. She’s..." He trailed off, searching for the right words. "She’s the kind of person who just helps, you know? Without making you feel like you owe her for it."
Lily smiled, stepping closer to loop her arms around his waist.
"Sounds like you lucked out," she said.
Oscar smiled, pressing a kiss to her hair. "I definitely did."
Lily glanced around the apartment again — at the carefully chosen throw blankets, the tiny succulents on the windowsill, the framed print over the couch that actually matched the room instead of clashing violently.
She thought of the quiet girl she'd seen once or twice, standing in the background while her brothers soaked up all the attention.
And Lily decided, very quietly, that she liked this Belle already.
A lot.

Monaco at night always looked beautiful.
All glitter and shine, like the whole city was pretending to be softer than it really was.
Lewis Hamilton knew better. He wasn’t dazzled by the surface anymore.
He was walking back from a late dinner with some old friends, hands tucked into the pockets of his jacket, keeping his head down, when the world exploded.
The screech of tires.
A flash of headlights where they shouldn’t be.
The sickening crunch of metal hitting metal.
Lewis whipped around just in time to see it happen.
A green Volvo — coming through the intersection on a green light — blindsided by a black SUV that barreled through the red without even slowing down.
The impact spun the green car sideways, sending it skidding up onto the curb, crumpled against a light post. The SUV swerved wildly, tires smoking, before lurching to a stop a few meters away.
Lewis didn’t think. He sprinted.
He reached the green car first, heart pounding hard enough to drown out the sounds of shouting passersby. The front end was mangled, the windshield spiderwebbed with cracks, airbags deployed.
He yanked the passenger side door open — the driver’s side was crushed in — and leaned across.
"Hey, hey—" he said urgently. "Stay with me. You okay?"
The girl inside was small, dazed, blood trickling from a cut above her eyebrow.
Blinking slowly, struggling to focus.
It took him a second to recognize her.
Isabelle Leclerc. Charles’s sister.
"Isabelle," he said more gently. "It’s Lewis. You’re okay. I’m right here."
She stared at him, glassy-eyed, her breathing shallow and fast.
Shock. Pure shock.
Lewis cursed under his breath, fumbling for his phone with one hand.
He called emergency services first, rattling off the location, demanding an ambulance. Then he crouched by the open door again, keeping his voice low and steady.
"You’re doing great, Isabelle. Just breathe. Help’s on the way."
Her hands were trembling badly. She tried to unbuckle herself and flinched at the movement.
"Don’t," Lewis said quickly. "Stay put. You could be hurt worse than you know. Just sit still for me, okay?"
She nodded, small and shaky, tears starting to well in her wide, shocked eyes.
Lewis took off his jacket and draped it over her lap to keep her warm, crouching to stay at her eye level.
"I’m gonna call your brother, yeah?" he said gently. "Charles’ll want to know—"
Isabelle’s hand shot out, grabbing his sleeve with surprising force.
"No," she said, her voice raw and cracking. "Don’t call him. Please."
Lewis blinked, caught off guard. "Isabelle—"
"Please," she said again, desperate now. "Don’t call him."
Lewis sat back on his heels, frowning slightly.
He didn’t argue — it was clear she wasn’t in any state to be pushed — but it planted a seed of confusion deep in his gut.
He knew families could be complicated.
But something about the panic in her voice unsettled him.
Not embarrassment.
Not stubbornness.
Something deeper.
Fear, maybe. Or exhaustion.
He swallowed hard, nodding slowly. "Alright. I won’t call him."
Isabelle sagged back into the seat, closing her eyes tightly, breathing ragged.
The ambulance sirens wailed in the distance, getting closer.
Lewis stayed right there, hand braced lightly on her knee to let her know he wasn’t leaving.
Future teammate, he thought grimly, the words sitting heavy in his chest.
He’d just signed with Ferrari.
Was about to step into the same garage as Charles Leclerc next year.
He knew Charles — or at least, he thought he did.
But now he wondered.
Because whatever was going on between Isabelle and her brother — whatever had made her so terrified at the idea of him finding out — it wasn’t simple.
It wasn’t small.
And Lewis, for the first time since agreeing to the move, felt the first real crack of doubt spider across the surface of everything he thought he knew.
***
Max’s phone rang late—too late for anything normal. Isabelle had been at Emilie’s for the evening, some kind of girls’ night that they always did just before Valentine’s day, involving ice cream and bad Rom-Coms.
He was already half-asleep, curled up in bed with Sassy stretched across his legs, when the vibration jolted him awake. He frowned, blinking at the screen.
Belle ❤️
Something in his chest tightened.
"Schatje?" he answered, already sitting up. "What’s going on?"
There was a pause. A breath. Then, softly—too softly—Isabelle said, "Max."
He was awake instantly.
"What happened?"
"I'm okay," she said immediately. "I'm at the hospital."
Max was already moving, throwing off the blanket and reaching for his sweatpants. "What? Why?"
"There was an accident," she admitted. "A drunk driver ran a red light and hit my car."
His blood went cold. "Where?"
"Just outside the tunnel," she said. "Max, I'm okay."
"You’re in the hospital, Isabelle," he snapped, shoving his feet into sneakers. "That’s not okay."
"They just wanted to check me over," she reassured him. "No serious injuries, just some bruises. Probably because of the Volvo."
The one he insisted she get, because safety ratings mattered more than aesthetics, because he’d seen too many crashes to trust anything less.
"Which hospital?" he demanded.
"Max—"
"Which one, Isabelle?"
She sighed. "Princess Grace."
"I’m coming."
"You don’t have to—"
"I'm coming," he repeated, already grabbing his keys.
There was another pause, then, quieter: "Okay."
"Stay on the phone with me," he said as he got into the car, putting her on speaker. His hands were tight fists, his heart hammering against his ribs. "Tell me exactly what happened."
She exhaled. "I was driving back from dinner with Emilie. It was late, so the roads weren’t busy. I had a green light. Then, out of nowhere, this car just—slammed into the side of me. Hard."
Max’s grip tightened on his phone.
"The police said he was drunk. Almost twice the legal limit."
"Fuck," Max muttered.
"I didn’t even see him coming," she admitted. "One second everything was fine, the next… airbags, the car spinning, glass everywhere. Then people running over, trying to get the door open."
Max clenched his jaw, swallowing against the sheer terror clawing up his throat.
"Isabelle," he said, voice rough, "are you sure you're okay?"
"I promise, I am."
Max exhaled shakily, throwing the car into park.
"I'm here," he told her. "Where are you?"
"Emergency department."
Two minutes later, he found her sitting on an exam bed, her coat draped over her lap, her hair slightly disheveled but otherwise—whole.
The moment her eyes met his, relief flooded her face.
Max didn’t hesitate. He crossed the room in two strides and pulled her into his arms, burying his face in her hair, inhaling the familiar scent of her perfume. She was warm. Real. Breathing.
"I hate you driving alone at night," he muttered against her temple.
"I know," she whispered, holding onto him just as tightly.
"You're getting a driver."
"Max—"
"I'm serious."
She huffed a small laugh. "My Volvo might have saved my life tonight."
Max just tightened his grip, pressing a kiss to the side of her head. "Then I'm never letting you drive anything else."
Max didn’t let go for a long time. He just held her, breathing her in, grounding himself in the fact that she was here, in one piece, instead of—
He couldn’t even think about the alternative.
Isabelle eventually pulled back slightly, just enough to look at him. “You really didn’t have to come all the way here.”
Max gave her a look. “Don’t say stupid things.”
He kissed her forehead, then her cheek, before pulling back properly to look her over. She looked tired—her makeup smudged from the night, her hair messy, a faint red mark along her collarbone where the seatbelt must have held her back.
Max pulled back only when a nurse cleared her throat nearby.
"We're keeping her overnight," she said, flipping through the chart. "Mild concussion. And her vitals were a little unstable when she came in — classic shock. Nothing serious, but better to monitor."
Max nodded tightly. "Good. That's good."
Isabelle groaned quietly. "Max, it’s not that bad—"
"Not arguing," he said firmly. "You're staying."
The nurse handed Isabelle two small white pills and a cup of water. Painkillers, she explained. Isabelle took them without complaint, sagging back against the pillows.
"She’ll be moved upstairs to a private room soon," the nurse said. "You can stay, if you’d like."
It didn’t take long before the painkillers hit her.
By the time they had put her in a private room, Belle was definitely enjoying the side effects of said pills.
She turned her head slowly, blinking up at him like he’d just materialized out of thin air.
“Max,” she said dreamily, her voice soft and a little slurred.
He moved closer, crouching so he was at eye level. "I’m here, Schatje. How do you feel?"
She reached out clumsily, grabbing the front of his hoodie and tugging him closer.
“I love you so much,” she mumbled, her face squishing against his chest. “Like…stupid much.”
Max’s heart twisted painfully in his chest.
“I love you too,” he murmured, brushing her hair gently off her forehead. “You’re concussed, sweetheart. You need to rest.”
She didn’t listen.
Instead, she stared up at him with big, glassy eyes and announced, very seriously: “You’re the best boyfriend in the whole world. The best. Like, you should get an award. A giant trophy.”
Max bit back a laugh, swallowing against the lump in his throat. “I don’t need a trophy, Belle. You’re enough.”
“No, no,” she insisted, poking his chest with one finger. “You don’t understand. You’re...you’re like, made of magic. You’re so good, Max. You’re…you’re my favorite,” she said solemnly, like it was the most important announcement in the world. "More than croissants. More than horses. More than the cats."
Max smiled, throat tight. "High praise."
She nodded, wide-eyed. "Don't tell Sassy."
"Your secret’s safe with me." He caught her hand gently, threading his fingers through hers. “You’re my favorite too.”
She blinked at him, still fighting to stay awake. “You’re so pretty, too. So pretty it’s rude. Like, how are you so pretty? It’s criminal.”
Max let out a soft chuckle, pressing a kiss to her knuckles. “You think I’m pretty?”
“I think you’re beautiful,” she said solemnly. Isabelle blinked up at him, utterly adoring. “You have such nice eyelashes. They’re so long. You know that? It’s not fair.”
“Schatje—”
“And you smell really good. Like soap and anger.”
Max bit back a laugh. “You’re off your head.”
She poked his chest with a finger. “You’re in love with me.”
He blinked. “That’s true, yes.”
She lit up. “I knew it! Good. Because I’m in love with you too. Like, so much. Stupid in love with you.”
Max melted and tried not to show it.
“I’m gonna marry you,” she added helpfully. “Someday.”
He leaned down and kissed her forehead. “Yeah? That the morphine talking?”
“No,” she mumbled. “That’s me talking. But the morphine is making it easier.”
Max took her hand and squeezed it. “Good. Because I’d marry you too. But first, we’re getting you better. No wedding until you can walk in a straight line.”
“I can walk in a straight line,” she said proudly. “It just moves sometimes.”
He laughed, unable to help it.
She just tugged him down until he was practically draped across her, clinging to him like he might vanish.
“Promise you won’t leave,” she whispered.
Max kissed the top of her head. “I’m not going anywhere. I’ll be right here the whole night.”
“You’re my safe place,” she murmured, her voice thick with sleep and meds. “You always make me feel safe.”
Max closed his eyes for a moment, breathing her in.
He would’ve fought the whole world to keep her safe. He would’ve torn Monaco apart brick by brick if it meant putting her back together.
“You’re safe,” he whispered back. “I promise.”
Isabelle finally drifted into a light sleep, her fingers still tangled tightly in his hoodie. Max stayed right there, sitting awkwardly on the edge of the bed, letting her use him as a pillow if that’s what she needed.

Text Messages: Lewis Hamilton & Sebastian Vettel
Lewis: Mate. Lewis: You awake? Lewis: Need to ask you something.
Sebastian: Always awake for you. Sebastian: What's up?
Lewis: Ran into a situation in Monaco tonight. Lewis: A car crash. Drunk driver. Lewis: Girl got hit.
Sebastian: Christ. Sebastian: Is she okay???
Lewis: Yeah. Shaken up. Lewis: Shocky. Lewis: It was Isabelle Leclerc.
Sebastian: ...wait. Sebastian: Charles’s sister Isabelle??
Lewis: Yeah. Lewis: I stayed with her till the ambulance came.
Sebastian: Good man. Sebastian: How bad was it?
Lewis: Bad enough. Lewis: She was freezing. Could barely speak at first. Lewis: Stayed with her until paramedics got there. Lewis: She’ll need a proper checkup, but she was alive, breathing, conscious.
Sebastian: Poor girl. Sebastian: She’s always been... quiet, but good. Solid. Sebastian: Did Charles get there?
Lewis: No. Lewis: I told her i’d call him. Lewis: She begged me not to. Lewis: full panic. Lewis: like—not just “i don’t want to worry him”— Lewis: like "please don’t tell him"Like panicked.
Sebastian: Shit.
Lewis: Seb. Lewis: What the hell is going on between her and Charles?
Sebastian: It's... complicated.
Lewis: That’s not an answer.
Sebastian: It’s family stuff. Sebastian: Not my story to tell.
Lewis: I’m not asking for gossip. Lewis: I’m about to be in the garage with Charles next year. Lewis: I need to know if I’m walking into a minefield.
Sebastian: It’s not a minefield. Sebastian: It’s a slow bleed that no one ever stopped. Sebastian: The Leclerc family dynamic is... difficult. Sebastian: Charles loves her in his way. Sebastian: But he doesn’t see her. Never really has.
Lewis: How do you mean?
Sebastian: It’s not loud.Sebastian: Not shouting or fighting. Sebastian: It’s worse. Sebastian: It’s forgetting. Ignoring.Sebastian: Charles forgets she’s a person sometimes. Sebastian: Like she’s background noise. Takes her for granted.
Lewis: Jesus.
Sebastian: Look, Charles isn’t cruel on purpose. Sebastian: But he doesn’t see her properly. Sebastian: Hasn’t for a long time. Sebastian: Too caught up in being the golden boy. Sebastian: It’s easy for everyone to overlook someone who doesn’t scream for attention.
Lewis: She shouldn’t have to scream.
Sebastian: No. She shouldn’t. Sebastian: But that’s the Leclerc family for you.
Sebastian: Charles loves his sister. I don’t doubt that.
Sebastian: I tried telling him once…I don’t think he even understood what I meant, Lewis.
Sebastian: Charles isn’t cruel. He is a good guy in a lot of ways. He’s not malicious. But he’s blind.
Sebastian: And the people around him? His family? They expect Isabelle to just... carry everything. Be the good girl. Be grateful.
Sebastian: Isabelle grew up in a shadow she didn’t ask for. And no one ever pulled her out of it.
Lewis: That’s fucked up. Lewis: You should have told me sooner.
Sebastian: It wasn’t my story to tell. But now that you know... be kind to her, if you can. Sometimes being overlooked hurts more than being hated. (And she has some fantastic thoughts on Ecological architecture, if the topic ever comes up!)
Lewis: I will. Thanks, mate.
Sebastian: Anytime. Sebastian: And good luck at Ferrari. You’re going to need it.
***
Lewis didn’t usually make a habit of visiting hospitals.
Not if he could avoid it.
But after the night he’d had — witnessing Isabelle Leclerc’s accident firsthand, seeing her curled up in that crumpled car, bleeding and shocky — he hadn’t been able to shake the image.
He needed to make sure she was really okay.
Especially after she had all but begged him not to call Charles.
So here he was, walking through the polished halls of Princess Grace Hospital, a coffee in one hand and the quiet buzz of early morning filling the air.
The receptionist had waved him up to her room without hesitation.
“She’s in 433,” she said. “They moved her upstairs overnight for observation.”
Lewis headed for the elevator, heart pounding a little too fast.
He wasn’t family.
He wasn’t even a close friend.
But last night… he hadn’t been able to just walk away.
He pushed open the door to room 433, expecting to find Isabelle sleeping alone.
Maybe a nurse checking in.
Maybe Charles finally at her bedside.
Instead, Lewis froze halfway through the doorway.
Because slouched in the chair next to Isabelle’s bed — hoodie rumpled, hair a mess, legs awkwardly stretched out and still somehow managing to look like he belonged there — was Max Verstappen.
Lewis stared.
Max was half-asleep, head tipped back against the wall, Isabelle’s hand still clutched tightly in his.
Not loosely.
Not casually.
Like he couldn’t bear to let go.
And on the bed, Isabelle was curled toward him in her sleep, her fingers twisted into the fabric of his hoodie like she was holding onto a lifeline.
Lewis’s brain short-circuited for a second.
He hadn’t known what to expect — but it definitely hadn’t been this.
Max stirred slightly, blinking awake as Lewis stood there like an idiot in the doorway.
His eyes sharpened immediately, full of instinct and protectiveness.
“Morning,” Max said quietly, his voice rough from sleep.
Lewis cleared his throat. “Morning. I—uh—I didn’t mean to wake you.”
“You didn’t,” Max said simply, glancing down at Isabelle to make sure she was still asleep before looking back at Lewis. His thumb brushed lightly over her knuckles without thinking.
Lewis’s mind was racing.
Max Verstappen.
Max “I hate Monaco socializing” Verstappen.
Max “I don’t do drama” Verstappen.
Holding Isabelle Leclerc’s hand like she was the most precious thing in the world.
Lewis stepped further into the room, lowering his voice instinctively. “I didn’t know you two were…”
Max’s mouth twitched slightly. Not quite a smile. “Yeah. Not a lot of people do. Lando does.”
Lewis nodded slowly, the pieces starting to rearrange themselves in his mind.
The panic in Isabelle’s voice when she said don’t call Charles.
The protectiveness bleeding off Max in waves.
The way Isabelle’s whole body, even unconscious, leaned into him like it was instinct.
It made a kind of sense, now.
A messy, secret kind of sense.
“I was there last night,” Lewis said quietly. “At the crash.”
Max’s eyes sharpened even more, alert now. “You were?”
Lewis nodded. “I saw it happen. I called the ambulance. Stayed with her until they arrived.”
Something flickered across Max’s face — gratitude, raw and immediate.
“Thank you,” he said quietly, like the words cost him something. “For staying with her.”
Lewis shook his head. “You don’t need to thank me. She… she didn’t want me to call Charles.”
Max’s jaw flexed. He looked down at Isabelle again, the tension in his shoulders visible.
“I know,” Max said after a beat. “It’s… complicated.”
Lewis thought about asking. About pushing.
But one look at the way Max’s hand tightened protectively around hers, and he decided against it.
Not his business.
Not today.
Instead, Lewis set the coffee cup he’d brought down on the bedside table, careful not to make too much noise.
“For when she wakes up,” he said simply.
Max nodded once. “She’ll appreciate that.”
Lewis hesitated, then gave Max a small, understanding nod.
And for the first time, he realized —
Max wasn’t just dating Isabelle.
He was in it.
Fully. Completely.
No half-measures.
And maybe — maybe that was exactly what Isabelle needed.
“Take care of her,” Lewis said finally, meaning it.
Max looked up, his expression hard and certain. “Always.”
Lewis nodded once more and quietly slipped out of the room, leaving them to their small, private world.
And for the first time in a long time, Lewis smiled to himself.
Because against all odds —
Isabelle Leclerc had found someone who would never let her stand alone again.

Lewis: You know, after the crash last night.
Sebastian: Right. How is she?
Lewis: Sleeping. Safe.
Sebastian: Good.
Sebastian: But that’s not what you’re texting about.
Lewis: No.
Lewis: Max Verstappen was there.
Sebastian: ...what?
Lewis: Sitting in the chair next to her bed. Lewis: Holding her hand. Lewis: Full-on boyfriend mode.
Sebastian: Are you serious???
Lewis: Dead serious. It wasn’t casual. It wasn’t new either.
Sebastian: Holy shit.
Lewis: Yeah. Lewis: Suddenly a lot of things make sense.
Sebastian: Like her panic last night when you mentioned Charles.
Lewis: Exactly. Lewis: She didn’t want Charles finding out. Lewis: Probably doesn’t want any of them finding out yet.
Sebastian: Honestly? Sebastian: If anyone’s going to protect her, it’s Max. Sebastian: He doesn’t do anything halfway. Sebastian: And god help anyone who tries to mess with her now.
Lewis: Yeah.
Lewis: He actually thanked me for staying with her after the accident. Like he sounded actually sincere.
Sebastian: I think she finally found someone who sees her.
Sebastian: Not the Leclerc name. Sebastian: Just... her.
Lewis: Yeah. Lewis: Yeah, that’s what it looked like. Lewis: And honestly? I’m happy for her.
Sebastian: Me too. Sebastian: God, Charles is going to lose his mind.

Max's ducklings
Heyy guys, I hope you enjoy this Max one-shot with the rookies. If you want to read more stories of mine here's my masterlist.
The first time you jokingly referred to the rookies as yours and Max’s ‘kids,’ it had been just that—a joke. A harmless, offhand comment made while watching Kimi tail Max through the paddock like a lost puppy. You hadn’t thought much of it at the time, but then Gabriel had started tagging along too, and soon, Oliver was trailing after them both.
It became a running gag between you and Max. Every time you saw one of them lingering near your boyfriend, you’d nudge him and whisper, “Your sons are waiting for you.” Max would roll his eyes, grumble something in Dutch under his breath, and pretend not to care. But over time, the joke started feeling a little too real.
You were the one who noticed it first. Max would casually check on them in the garage, making sure they had everything they needed. He’d offer Kimi a few words of advice about tyre management, remind Gabriel to stay out of trouble on the track, and even critique Isack’s qualifying performance like a strict but well-meaning father. And it wasn’t just them—Liam, Oliver, and Jack, who had already taken their first steps in F1, had somehow joined the ever-growing group.
“They’re not my kids,” Max insisted one evening after a race, arms crossed as you teased him about it. “They’re grown men. They don’t need parents.”
You smirked, sipping from your drink. “Oh, really? Then why did you tell Kimi not to overwork his tires like that again? And why did you give Gabriel that pep talk about confidence? And why did you tell Isack to ignore the media when they criticized him?”
Max scowled, grumbling into his beer. “They’re just young. They need guidance.”
“They need parents,” you corrected playfully. “And, like it or not, you’ve become a dad.”
Max groaned dramatically, but he didn’t argue.
The paddock caught on quickly. Social media was soon flooded with memes about ‘Papa Max’ and his ‘ducklings.’ A particularly viral post had an edited picture of Max and you, your faces photoshopped onto a mother and father goose, with Kimi, Gabriel, Isack, Liam, Oliver, and Jack waddling behind you. Even Christian Horner joined in on the joke one day, patting Max on the back and saying, “How’s fatherhood treating you?”
You expected Max to brush it off, maybe even get annoyed. Instead, he just sighed and muttered, “Exhausting.”
The real shift came after a particularly rough race weekend for Isack. He had made a mistake during the race and spun out, leading to a wave of criticism online. Pundits started questioning if he was even good enough for F1, and some of the comments were downright cruel. Normally, Max stayed out of these things. He rarely engaged in media debates that didn’t involve him directly. But that day, in the middle of a press conference, a journalist brought up Isack’s struggles, asking Max if he thought the young driver was cut out for the sport.
Max’s response was immediate. “Isack is a talented driver. He wouldn’t be here if he wasn’t. It’s easy to sit behind a screen and criticize, but racing at this level is incredibly difficult. He’s learning, like all of us did when we started.” He leaned forward slightly, gaze sharp. “Maybe people should stop expecting rookies to be perfect and let them grow.”
Your phone buzzed almost instantly with messages. ‘DAD MODE ACTIVATED’ read one from Lando. Another from Liam simply had a bunch of crying emojis.
When you saw Max later that evening, you couldn’t help but tease him. “I think that was the most dad-like thing you’ve ever done.”
Max groaned. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Oh, please. You defended him like a protective father.” You wrapped your arms around him from behind, resting your chin on his shoulder. “I think deep down, you love your little ducklings.”
He huffed, but there was no real irritation in it. “I just don’t like seeing young drivers get ripped apart when they’re trying their best.”
You grinned. “Uh-huh. Sure. And next, you’ll be giving them bedtime stories.”
“If they stop making stupid mistakes, maybe.”
From that moment on, Max stopped fighting the joke. He still pretended to be exasperated when the rookies stuck to him like glue, but he never turned them away. When Liam had a tough weekend, Max was the first to check in on him. When Kimi finally had a strong race, Max clapped him on the back and muttered, “See? Told you it’d come.”
One day, as you watched the six young drivers standing around Max, hanging onto his every word as he gestured animatedly about car setups, you smiled to yourself. He’d never admit it, but Max had fully embraced the role.
Later that evening, as you two walked back to the motorhome, you leaned into him with a grin. “So, how does it feel to be a dad?”
Max groaned, shaking his head. “I hate you.”
“No, you don’t.”
He sighed, glancing back over his shoulder toward where the rookies still lingered in the paddock. “Fine. Maybe… maybe it’s not so bad.”
You grinned, slipping your hand into his. “Our little family.”

The way Kimi grabbed onto the lapels of Max's suit jacket like he knew Max would let him, it's endearing, the way Max just went with it, that's his child!
Bonus: Kimi reaching to pull Charles' arm, that's his other parent! 😂 and amused Lewis looking at the interaction with a 'heh, families' expression
#I predict this season is going to be me waxing poetically about Max with Kimi#and max with any of his other ducklings#sorry maxi but you're the mama with the way Kimi and Liam behave around him#I need to see max with bubbles too 😭#max verstappen#and the leclerc-verstappens#lestappen family

Hello!! I was wondering if you could please write a redbull driver with multiple wdc x platonic grid
But the older drivers like max Charles Lewis lando etc get jealous of her constantly being with the younger ones like franco kimi and Ollie all fluff n funny n fans going crazy bout their jealousy
Thank you
Rivals of the Track

{Reader's POV}
It was the Azerbaijan GP, Kevin wouldn't be racing so Ollie had replaced him for the race. He was this tall lanky British teen who rightfully corrected me saying that he was an adult now, he was funny. Ollie was with his best friend Kimi, who had come to support him for the race. I found their friendship endearing and reminded me of my best friend who would try to come to as many races as she could. The other drivers would argue about who my best friend was, but I knew who my best friend was and it was Y/BFF/N.
"Y/N, did you colour your hair?" Kimi asked. "You can tell?" I asked slightly shocked, "I just went for a lighter shade of burgundy than the last time" I elaborated. "Yeah, you look prettier" Ollie chimed. "Thank you. You boys are so sweet, unlike some people I know" I said looking at the other drivers who were stood a few feet away who were very confused when I asked them if anything was different about me. "You're always pretty" Franco added. "Okay, okay, flattery will only get you so far" I laughed. "We're being honest. Having some one as talented and beautiful on the grid that we can learn from is an honour" Kimi said solemnly. "Okay, is there a body you boys wanna hide?" I asked laughing. They laughed back.
"Can you introduce us to Lewis?" Franco whispered while we were stood there waiting for the media interviews. "Sure" I said. "He's so cool and we aren't sure if he'll talk to us" The other two boys added. "Oh, no, my babies, he's a sweetheart. You could just walk up to him and start talking. I was scared of him when I first joined too but we're pretty good friends" I explained. The 3 boys smiled at me, nodding in agreement.
Every time I would be talking to these 3, trying to make them feel at home like all the times the others did, I could feel eyes on me. I wasn't sure why they were all glaring at me.
I was doing my post quali media after qualifying P4. "So, what a race? Are you expecting a win or a podium?" The interviewer asked. "Obviously going to go for the win, podium isn't too far away either, let's see, I have a Ferrari and a McLaren to fight off though" I laughed. "We've seen you hanging around with the younger drivers, do they remind you of your rookie days?" she asked. "Yes, they are so nervous and scared but full of energy. They are fun to hang out with too" I said. "Does this mean you find the older drivers boring?" she prodded. "Never said that" I tsked. "I'm just trying to make them feel at home" I said. "Well, the fans are eating your interactions up. They find it so cute, you're like the mother duck and they are your ducklings" she said. "I wouldn't say that they are wrong" I chuckled. "I interviewed your teammate Max a while back and he didn't seem too pleased with your blossoming friendship. Why is that so?" the interviewer pointed out. "We're all competitive. I guess they are competitive about friends too" I shrugged. "It was nice talking to you, can't wait to watch you on the podium" she stated. I smiled and talked away.
I met the others in my drivers room. "I think this is a confidentiality breech to have all the other teams here" I laughed. "We're staging an intervention" Max stated. "For what? I don't have an addiction" I pointed out. "Since we're losing our bestie" Lando said. I couldn't help but laugh, "Who?" I asked. "You, you dumbass" Charles said. I sat on the chair that was unoccupied. "What's up my fellow drivers?" I asked. "We aren't only your fellow drivers, we're best friends" Lewis said. "Arguable but okay" I shrugged. "Are we not best friends?" Daniel fake cried. "My best friend is Y/BFF/n. You guys, I tolerate at best" I laughed. I could see all them visibly pout. "We don't like it" they said in unison. "What do you not like?" I asked. "You hanging out with the younger drivers or that we aren't best friends. Are we too old for you?" Carlos asked. "I'm as old as you guys. They just remind me of my siblings, they are like my ducklings and I'm their mother duck" I chuckled reminded of the analogy. "So, you aren't replacing us?" Oscar quipped. "Obviously not, they are my children. You guys are my friends" I said face palming myself. "Group hug?" Yuki asked and then we all huddled together. "What about us being best friends?" Max asked. "Still Y/BFF/N. I don't feel like a girl when I'm around you guys, she reminds me. We all have something special, we're competitors and friends" I said. They all seemed to nod in agreement.
After an abysmal race, I was laying in my hotel room going through twitter when I saw people talking about how I had taken the younger drivers under my wing and how they would follow me around like lost puppies while you could see the others stare daggers at them. At some point in the weekend, Max did almost carry me away from them, out of jealousy it seems and the gif was circulating all over the internet. I laughed at the tweets, my friends can get jealous, they would be jealous when I hang out with Y/BFF/N but I do need a get away from all the testosterone, but they are nice people, just bad at communicating.

hey! did you see that post going around with drunk!Oscar looking completely out of it, some guy's hand around his waist? I remember you mentioned somewhere you like writing drunk scenes. could you write something carcar with this kind of dummy!drunk Oscar? that would make my day ❤️
You are completely right about my tendency to write fics where the characters are drunk. After this one, there are at least 3 more coming up. Clocked! And I don't even drink alcohol, hah! (also write a lot of porn for an asexual, so... make of that what you will.)
I didn't find the exact post you're referring to, but I'm guessing you meant this flavor of Oscar:
I've already postet a snippet of this, but here's the full, almost 6k of dummy!drunk carcar, rated M
----
Carlos let his gaze wander across the opulent, marble-columned room. It was the kind of space that belonged in a palace, but was in fact just the banquet hall of a local luxury hotel.
He wrinkled his nose, finding it all a bit tacky. This was a fundraiser for a school, for fuck’s sake! Granted, a fancy private school, but still. Not the goddamn royal wedding. Yet the board had spared no expense to impress the parents and grandparents of their future students.
The hall was lined on both sides with tables, overflowing with canapés and champagne flutes, from which an army of waiters continuously filled their trays, gliding from guest to guest to ensure not a single throat went dry.
Clearly, the master plan was to get everyone drunk enough to leave a generous check with their signature on it before the night was over.
Carlos had no idea why the teachers had to be part of this farce. They stood out in their ill-fitting suits like ducklings at a swan convention, clearly out of place.
His eyes landed on Charles, surrounded by a group of older ladies, his gaze silently screaming for help. A bit farther off stood Max, sulking in a corner with his arms crossed, shooting death glares at anyone who dared approach him. And in the opposite corner, Carlos spotted his least favorite colleague, Oscar – who he’d bet was having the worst time of all, trapped among privileged older people, forced to make small talk about what blessings their spoiled children were.
Instead, he found Oscar with a big, dopey smile on his face, eyes narrower than Carlos had ever seen them, a deep flush on his cheeks. He held an empty champagne flute in his hand, and there... there was an arm, slung low around his waist. Far too low. It belonged to some older man whose face was way too close to Oscar’s to be appropriate. Especially considering Oscar was clearly drunk out of his mind.
Before Carlos had even formed a proper plan, he was already striding across the hall, setting his empty glass on a passing tray.
Just because he didn’t like Oscar didn’t mean he’d let him get groped in the middle of a work function. As private school teachers, they already gave up enough dignity to these kinds of parents, money often speaking louder than real effort or basic decency.
“Good evening,” Carlos said politely once he reached the group of older men surrounding Oscar. “I’m terribly sorry, but I need to steal Mr. Piastri for a moment – we’re supposed to prepare the presentation later and he’s the only one who knows the password for the file.”
Oscar turned to him, that big, stupid smile still plastered on his face. “Wot?”
It took serious effort to keep his own fake smile in place, especially since the massive hand resting at the curve of Oscar’s ass didn’t even twitch.
“The presentation, Oscar,” Carlos repeated, enunciating pointedly. “I sent you an email about it earlier today.” When Oscar just gave a slow blink in response, Carlos turned to the men with exaggerated exasperation. “Math guys,” he sighed. “Famously terrible communicators.”
The overly hands-on man beside Oscar broke into loud, boisterous laughter, and Carlos swore he saw that giant hand slide even lower in his peripheral vision. He might’ve blacked out for a second. Abandoning the high road, Carlos grabbed the stranger’s hand and pulled it off Oscar’s ass, slipping an arm around his colleague’s back instead to steer him away from the predatory crowd. There was a chorus of surprised gasps and awkward chuckles behind him, and Carlos could only hope the guy wasn’t going to file a complaint with the higher-ups.
Oscar stumbled along with him, his side easily melting into Carlos’s, which was strange, because Oscar was usually stiff as a board, groaning like he was seventy every time he stood up from a chair. Now, he felt like liquid, easily guided across the room and out a side door. Carlos paused for a moment, getting his bearings. They’d ended up in a dim corridor, but there was light to the left, so he followed it, rounding the corner and finding an entrance to a long sunroom that opened into the hotel’s rear gardens.
He maneuvered Oscar’s boneless body through two sliding doors until they stood outside on the terrace, the summer evening breeze brushing soothingly against their skin.
Oscar made no attempt to free himself from Carlos’s arm. He probably needed the support. His head tilted as he looked around with slow, confused blinks.
“Is your laptop out here?” he asked.
“Oh my god!” Carlos took the empty champagne flute from Oscar’s hand and set it down on a mosaic table, then rounded on his hammered colleague. “You do realise that old creep’s hand was basically kneading your ass, right?”
Oscar gave him wide eyes – at least as wide as they would go in his state, which wasn’t very wide at all.
“Oh, no, he was just being a little overly friendly,” he waved it off with a shrug. “You know. American.”
“Yeah? Is that so? Do Americans usually stick their tongues in your ear at professional functions?”
Oscar, unbelievably, giggled like Carlos had just made a joke and didn’t even follow up on it. Instead, he slowly sank down to the tiled floor, his side dragging against Carlos’s. Apparently, the groaning like a dying animal wasn’t limited to getting up – it made an appearance even when he was sitting– or rather, lying down on the ground.
“What are you doing?” Carlos asked, incredulous.
“Head’s spinning a bit,” Oscar said, eyes closed.
“Yes, no shit. Are you going to throw up?”
Oscar snorted, opening one crinkly eye to peek up at Carlos. “From what?” he asked. “I didn’t drink any alcohol. I’m at work! I only had that funny, sparkly orange juice.”
“You mean the mimosas?” Carlos groaned, dragging his hand down his face. “Oscar! How many?”
Oscar gave him a blank look, then visibly blanched.
“Why do they have mimosas at a fancy gala?” he whined, instead of answering Carlos’s question. “Aren’t they for brunch and stuff?”
“Yes, but what kind of clientele do you think the parents of our students are? They made sure to have everyone’s favorite drink on hand!”
Oscar mumbled something unintelligible which Carlos was 90% sure was “They are pretty good…” and Carlos shook his head, pulling his phone from his pocket.
“I’m calling you an Uber,” he said, resolute.
Oscar didn’t even try to argue. He folded his hands over his belly and closed his eyes, face relaxed and content, very unlike his usual expression of mild constipation.
The nearest Uber was still a while out. They were on a secluded hilltop overlooking the ocean – an ideal setting for a whodunit, and Carlos could only hope Oscar didn’t drop dead and leave him as the prime suspect – miles away from the city.
“Don’t fall asleep now!” he warned, nudging Oscar with his foot. “I won’t carry your drunk ass all the way to the parking lot!”
“Hm yes, because you couldn’t,” Oscar murmured, clearly half-asleep. Of course he’s out of it enough to let some randy retiree grope him in the middle of a gala and not even register the violation – but God forbid he miss a chance to throw shade at Carlos.
“I teach sports,” Carlos reminded him, offended despite himself. “I’m fit! Of course I could carry you!”
“Really?” Oscar cracked open his eyes again, squinting up at him through the terrace lights. He looked Carlos up and down, then smiled. In a soft voice, he said, “Prove it?”
And honestly, Carlos would not have. He would not have fallen for it – if it weren’t for that soft voice and that stupid, froggy smile, a reminder of just how utterly wasted Oscar was. He would have laughed in his face and said, “You wish,” and then abandoned him on the terrace floor while he found Lando to dump the responsibility on.
Instead, he crouched down and hooked his arms under Oscar’s armpits.
Oscar’s hands wrapped around his neck without needing direction. And even though he looked like a sack of rice left on the ground, he lifted easily – body loose, melting into every curve of Carlos’s frame. He was warm against the breeze. And he smelled… surprisingly good. Carlos couldn’t place it. Something sweet. Something that made him feel hungry.
He was tempted to just throw Oscar over his shoulder and carry him toward the garden, where he knew there was a gate leading to the parking lot. At the last second, though, he decided that Oscar had already lost enough dignity for one day. So he merely set him upright, wrapped an arm around his waist for support, and gently nudged him in the direction of the stairs.
“You call this carrying?” Oscar grumbled, dragging his feet.
“I just decided I’d prefer not to have your puke dripping down my back,” Carlos said. “Careful! Steps.”
Oscar nearly didn’t make it down the obstacle of the three narrow steps into the garden, because, incredibly, a series of bubbly giggles burst from his throat – the kind usually reserved for Lando’s antics. It caught Carlos so off-guard that he almost missed a step himself. Thankfully, he managed to catch both of them in time, steadying Oscar by pulling him back into his side.
“Are you okay?” he asked, because Oscar giggling at something he said could only mean something was seriously wrong.
Oscar let out a low hum and allowed Carlos to guide him gently into the garden. It was darker here, though the stone path was lit by a row of soft ground lights. The way to the parking lot had to be somewhere nearby, but everything looked so different in the dark that Carlos briefly lost his sense of direction.
He stopped at a junction, glancing around.
“Can you stand on your own for a second?” he asked Oscar, who took a reluctant step back so Carlos could fish his phone out of his pocket. Google Maps wasn’t particularly helpful, but at least it confirmed the parking lot was somewhere to their left, and he should be looking for a gate on that side.
He had just stuffed his phone back in his pocket when Oscar sagged forward against him, forehead pressed to Carlos’s shoulder. Carlos barely caught him in time to keep them from toppling over backward.
“Whoa! What are you–”
“Sorry, just got dizzy for a sec,” Oscar mumbled into his shoulder, warm breath seeping right through Carlos’s shirt. There it was again – that sweet scent, stronger than the surrounding rose bushes. Carlos had to fight the urge to bury his nose in Oscar’s hair and take a deep breath. Instead, he carefully wrapped both arms around Oscar’s waist to steady him.
“Idiot,” Carlos murmured, but it came out far too fond – maybe because of the low voices they were using, or because it was hard to fall into their usual rhythm when Oscar was being so unusually soft and vulnerable. This whole side of him was completely derailing Carlos. He hadn’t known Oscar could be warm or affectionate. He hadn’t known Oscar smelled good. He hadn’t known his breath would feel hot through layers of clothing. If he had known, he definitely wouldn’t have carried him out here, into the garden, where the lights were dim, the insects buzzed lazily in the bushes, and the two of them were alone, pressed together from head to toe.
“Better?” Carlos asked after a moment, unable to stop his hand from drawing slow, soothing circles on Oscar’s back.
Oscar hummed an affirmative against his shoulder and finally pulled back slightly – not out of Carlos’s space, not really, but at least his lips were no longer touching him. When Carlos dared to meet Oscar’s far-too-close eyes, he spotted that same froggy little smile again.
“You’re being too nice to me,” Oscar said, barely audible despite how close he was. “It’s freaking me out.”
“I am always nice!” Carlos protested – relieved, honestly, to return to some form of arguing, even if his hands still hadn’t gotten the message and kept tracing slow circles on Oscar’s back. “You’re the one always picking fights with me!”
Oscar looked amused by that. His eyes crinkled even more than before, pale skin rippling with too many lines – not just around his eyes, but at the corners of his mouth, too. He looked like a different person. Then again, he’d looked different all night, ever since showing up with his hair brushed and in a suit, albeit a slightly-too-small one that hugged his ass so tightly Carlos had been distracted even before this drunken debacle began.
Maybe it was time to admit that Oscar was… actually really good-looking. And good-smelling. God, what a terrible thing to realize about your least favorite coworker.
“I’m sure I was antagonizing you when you scratched up my car in the parking lot, huh?” Oscar said, predictably, since it was the origin of their strained relationship. But for once, there was no real bite to it.
“You were parked like a jackass!” Carlos shot back with his usual retort. It was so worn out now it barely held any weight. “How was I supposed to see you sticking halfway out of the space?”
“Maybe look into getting some glasses if you’re that blind,” Oscar said, and then, without warning, went off-script. “Might actually look good on you.”
“Yeah?” Carlos breathed, too thrown to come up with a good comeback.
“Mmhm,” Oscar hummed again, one hand rising to brush against the place where the frame of a pair of glasses might sit. His long nails dragged gently under Carlos’s eyes, too light to scratch. Very, very slowly, Oscar leaned in further, his body melting into Carlos’s, one knee sliding between his legs.
Carlos inhaled sharply and let it out in a slow exhale. “Jesus, Oscar,” he finally said.
Oscar’s thumb drifted down Carlos’s cheekbone toward the corner of his mouth. He didn’t speak, just stared at the movement of his own hand like it was hypnotic. By the time he reached Carlos’s lips, both of them were breathing hard. No more laugh-lines on Oscar’s face – just the pale glow of his skin, only disturbed by a smattering of moles and the plush, pink hint of what hid inside his open mouth.
A shrill ringtone made them jump apart just in time. Carlos scrambled to pull his phone from the pocket of his suit pants, which suddenly felt much tighter than before.
Shit. He’d completely forgotten about the Uber!
“Sorry! We’re on our way!” he barked into the phone, then grabbed Oscar – who was giggling – by the arms and dragged him down the path.
They nearly walked past the small garden gate, which wasn’t lit at all. Fortunately, Carlos caught a flash of headlights from the waiting car and managed to deliver his completely wasted coworker to the parking lot before the driver could leave due to a no-show.
“Sorry, sorry, sorry!” he apologized to the man, who was pacing impatiently in front of his car. “We got lost in the garden.”
Opening the back door, he gently maneuvered Oscar onto the seat, where he slumped against the window, soft like mashed potatoes. He didn’t move a muscle as Carlos half-climbed over him to pull the seatbelt across and buckle him in. The car’s back seat was mostly dark, but a bit of light caught in the whites of Oscar’s eyes, and on the soft curve of his lips. He was looking up at Carlos with that quiet, contented smile Carlos had never seen before today.
As Carlos started to pull away, Oscar grabbed the sleeve of his jacket.
“Where are you going?”
“Back inside, obviously,” Carlos whispered, matching Oscar’s soft voice. “I can’t just ditch work. If anyone notices you’re gone, I’ll cover for you, okay?”
Oscar didn’t let go. Still smiling, he said, “Then I can’t go either.”
“What? Do you not trust me, or–”
“No, I don’t,” Oscar said, though he was clearly just teasing. “But I also can’t go home. Sophie made me put all my stuff in her purse because she said my bulging pockets ruined the fit of the pants. I don’t have my house keys on me.”
Carlos suppressed a groan and tried to ignore the driver growing more impatient behind him.
If he had to stumble all the way back to the hotel now, find Sophie in the massive hall, all while avoiding their bosses and the old men he’d antagonized…
“You’ll have to take me to your place,” Oscar whispered, tightening his grip on Carlos’s sleeve.
“Oh,” Carlos said.
This was a bad idea. A terrible idea. Horrible. Catastrophic.
He found himself settling into the middle seat before his brain could come up with more disastrous synonyms, buckling in while Oscar’s limp hand dropped from Carlos’s sleeve, right onto his thigh.
“Ready?” the driver called from outside and shut the door before Carlos could reply.
Two minutes later, they were on the road to Carlos’s apartment. A slow song played on the radio, streetlights flashing sparsely past the windows. Oscar’s hand stayed on his thigh, unmoving. A radioactive weight, pressing him down into the seat and keeping his pants tight.
He couldn’t even see Oscar’s face in the dark – just the occasional flicker of silhouette when they passed a streetlight. After a while, Oscar’s head tilted bit by bit until it rested against Carlos’s shoulder.
Had he fallen asleep? Probably not, judging by the steady, deliberate strokes of his thumb across Carlos’s inner thigh. Oscar’s hair tickled his nose, wafting that sweet scent again. Carlos hadn’t really clicked with the Uber driver, but suddenly he wished for some pointless chatter, just to defuse the tension in the car.
The drive felt twice as long as it had on the way here. And just when Carlos thought Oscar had dozed off, his hand moved again, dragging along the bulge in Carlos’s pants, drawing a surprised, breathy whimper from him that he really, really hoped the driver hadn’t heard over the music.
The next streetlight illuminated Oscar’s eyes again. He was looking up at Carlos from beneath a curl of hair, gauging his reaction. There was a glint on his lips where he’d licked them.
Carlos was going to die.
He’d had no idea the tension between himself and Oscar had been sexual all this time. Maybe it hadn’t been – maybe it had just turned upside down tonight because Oscar was being nice for once, and all dressed up, and… groping him in the backseat of the car.
No, not groping. Not exactly. His hand was just lightly brushing against him, irregular, almost by accident. The only reason Carlos had to assume intention was that Oscar’s face was tilted upward, presumably looking him right in the eyes.
Carlos closed his eyes and let his head fall back against the headrest. He could feel Oscar’s hot breath against his collar, making him reach up to loosen his tie. He felt like a teenager, one glass of champagne too many, bubbles dancing in his periphery, probing hands, blurred lines. It was just a twenty-minute ride, but by the time they finally re-entered civilization, Carlos felt like he’d lived half a life – hard and hot and on the brink of snapping.
He wasn’t sure how much he tipped the driver in the end. He just shoved his hand into his back pocket and pulled out whatever cash he’d stuffed in there, leaving it in the center console without a word. Then he got out and walked around the car, collecting Oscar from the other side.
The Uber driver stuck his head out the window, suddenly looking a lot friendlier than before.
“Thanks, ‘ppreciate it!” he said, waving the wad of cash Carlos had left him. There was definitely a twenty in there. Oh boy.
But Carlos didn’t have much time to mourn his hard-earned money. Oscar was heavily leaning into him, eyes half-lidded – no, three-quarters lidded. Actually, they were slits, at most. He was smiling again, as if he’d never been happier in his life than right now, with Carlos’s arm around his waist, insistently maneuvering him toward the entrance to his building.
He lived on the ground floor and had never been as glad about it as today, because there was no elevator in this building, and carrying Oscar up a flight of stairs might have ended in disaster.
Not that this wouldn’t end in disaster.
“Okay,” Carlos said, drawing in shallow breaths in a futile attempt to calm himself down. “This is… this is me.”
Oscar’s eyes crinkled, amused, as he walked over the threshold, right into Carlos’s life. Carlos was mostly an orderly person, but there were hints of him not expecting any visitors strewn around. A blender cup left to soak in the sink from where he’d hastily thrown together a smoothie that morning. A few discarded tie options hanging from the back of the couch. A sports magazine, flipped open on the coffee table.
“It’s nice,” Oscar said, which was probably the most un-Oscar-like thing he could’ve said about Carlos’s apartment, reminding Carlos once again of just how far gone he must be.
Stalling for time, Carlos wandered into the kitchen, hoping Oscar wouldn’t just collapse to the floor without his support. “You want anything to drink?” he asked, opening a random cupboard. “Water? Coffee?”
Oscar’s brows arched, but he followed, leaning with his elbows against the kitchen island.
“Water’s fine,” he said, and Carlos reached for a tall glass, filled it from the faucet, and handed it over from the other side of the island, so they didn’t have to touch.
Oscar, ignoring the message, sidled along the island’s edge until he was right in Carlos’s face again. The light was low, but bright enough to highlight the flush sitting high on Oscar’s cheeks, right on the fleshy part under the eyes. It looked pretty. He looked so fucking pretty when he wasn’t being a prissy bastard, nagging Carlos for literally just existing. So pretty when he smiled.
“Thank you,” Oscar whispered, finally taking the glass from Carlos’s sweaty hands. He didn’t break eye contact as he took a long sip, swallowing audibly. The half-empty glass gave a soft clink when Oscar set it down on the kitchen counter, and the sound went straight through Carlos, bone-deep.
It was so fucking hard to be ethical when Oscar looked the prettiest he’d ever looked, wore the tightest pants he’d ever worn, and stared right into his eyes while licking his lips.
“Thank you for taking care of me,” Oscar continued, when Carlos could do nothing but stare back, unblinking.
“Yeah, uh,” Carlos coughed, only just realizing how dry his throat had gotten. “It’s no problem, rea–”
Oscar grabbed his tie and pulled him in, a lot more coordinated than Carlos would’ve given him credit for. There was no miss, no awkward clack of teeth – just Oscar’s soft, freshly-wet lips, and then, already, his tongue, slipping into Carlos’s open, desperate mouth.
Carlos immediately lost the fight against his own morals.
Oscar’s body was fusing itself to his again. Mouth-to-mouth, chest-to-chest, bulge-to-bulge. They seemed to be about the same height, which, for some reason, was the hottest thing to Carlos right now. He’d never thought a lack of height difference could be a kink, but he was discovering a lot of new things about himself tonight.
His hands were busying themselves with Oscar’s shirt, fiddling with the buttons, which refused to open. They were just as stubborn as their wearer, so Carlos gave up and went straight for the belt instead. Oscar groaned into his mouth when Carlos peeled his pants down, past his ass, and the weight of the belt carried them further, until they pooled around Oscar’s ankles. It was probably a terrible idea to leave a drunk man with fabric shackles like that, but Carlos was too distracted by the firm grip of Oscar’s ass in his hands, and Oscar somehow managed to step out of his shoes and pant legs just fine. Maybe the alcohol was wearing off.
Spurred on by that idea, Carlos gripped Oscar’s ass harder, pulling him close, and up, until Oscar got the message and wrapped his legs around Carlos’s waist.
‘See? I can carry you. Easy!’ Carlos would’ve liked to say, as he transported Oscar around the kitchen island and across the living room blindly, until Oscar’s back hit the bedroom door. His mouth was still too busy to talk, so he hoped the quality of his neck-sucking conveyed the proper amount of smugness as he pushed down the door handle and stumbled into the room with Oscar in his arms.
The unloading wasn’t very elegant, unfortunately. He banged his shins on the bedframe and dropped Oscar into the pillows like a sack of bricks.
Oscar landed with a muffled “Ooph!” but didn’t complain. He just looked up at Carlos, the flush even more widespread than before. It went all the way down into his loosened collar, tie hanging on by a thread, the first three buttons undone to reveal surprisingly shaped pecs.
“Fuck,” he groaned, as his narrow eyes raked across Carlos’s body. Carlos wasn’t sure what he was seeing that was so impressive – he wasn’t the one lying on the bed with naked, spread legs, light grey boxers tented and damp at the tip, ready to be devoured. Not even in his wildest dreams could Carlos have conjured up such a sinful image of Oscar Jack Piastri, bane of his existence.
But there Oscar was, one hand reaching down to squeeze his dick, still staring up at Carlos, voice coming out rough and breathless as he said, “Jesus! Why do you have to be so fucking hot?”
Suddenly, there was a record-scratch sound in Carlos’s brain.
Because it wasn’t just the picture in front of him – it was the words, too.
Oscar Piastri, in his right mind, would never say those words out loud to Carlos Sainz’s face.
One time, when it was just the two of them in the break room, Oscar had caught Carlos checking himself out in the reflection of the coffee machine and rolled his eyes so hard Carlos had genuinely worried about the strings holding them in place.
“Regret to inform you, you’re not as hot as you think you are,” Oscar had told him.
That was what the real, actual Oscar Piastri thought of Carlos. He couldn’t trust anything this mimosa-brained, dummy-drunk temptation was telling him. It was just the alcohol talking. And if Carlos ended up taking advantage, he wouldn’t only break his own morals – there’d probably be a murder in this house the moment the real Oscar returned to his body in the morning.
So, as hard as it was, Carlos took a step back – away from the heavily breathing, clearly aroused man sitting on his bed with spread legs – mumbled a quick, “Good night, Oscar”, and stumbled off toward the bathroom as fast as his legs could carry him.
It took about five minutes for Oscar to process what had just happened and show up at the closed bathroom door, banging his fists against it and yelling what the fuck was wrong with Carlos – and another five minutes until he gave up and shuffled back toward the bed, muttering a few choice words under his breath.
Carlos stayed in the bathroom for the rest of the night, not trusting himself to face Oscar again. He took a long, cold shower and built himself a nest out of a few towels.
It was a terrible night. He barely slept at all. Different scenes from the evening played on the inside of his eyelids like a movie screen every time he closed his eyes. At one point, he even had to take a second cold shower. He could still feel Oscar’s ghostly hand brushing over his thigh, again and again, grazing his bulge through the suit trousers.
He woke up when the sun shone through the small bathroom window, way too early, and half-hard.
There was no sound coming from outside, though, so he dared to slip out of the bathroom.
The door to his bedroom was closed, and Carlos gave it a wide berth, heading to the kitchen instead to make himself a coffee.
Two hours later, there were still no sounds coming from the bedroom. Carlos decided it was time to face his fate.
He grabbed the glass Oscar had abandoned on the kitchen island the night before and filled it with fresh water. Then, very carefully, he went to knock on his own bedroom door.
No reaction.
He knocked again, but nothing changed.
Had… had Oscar left after Carlos had locked himself in the bathroom? Unlikely – he didn’t have his keys, or his phone, and Carlos had found his pants abandoned on the kitchen floor this morning.
Oh God. What if he’d fallen asleep on his back and choked on his own vomit, like some kind of drug victim?
Carlos opened the door and found the room mostly dark. The curtains were drawn, but they didn’t manage to keep the sunlight out completely.
The bed was a mess, but the body sprawled half-over, half-under the pile of blankets and pillows Carlos kept in his bed was clearly still breathing. Carlos was greeted by a perfectly shaped ass, clad only in underwear, sticking out of the sheets, one bare leg tossed carelessly over the blankets. Oscar’s hair was sticking up in all directions, defying gravity.
Slowly, slowly, Carlos walked into the room. He just wanted to set the glass of water on the bedside table and sneak back out, but he must have made some kind of noise, because just as he reached the bed, Oscar’s eyes snapped open, staring up at him.
There was a moment of silence as Carlos didn’t dare move a muscle, hoping against hope that Oscar would simply close his eyes again and go back to sleep. Instead, he sat up in bed.
He didn’t look especially disoriented for someone who had just gotten blackout drunk the night before, but then, Oscar never really looked fazed by anything.
“What are you doing?” Oscar asked, voice deep with sleep.
Carlos hesitantly lifted the glass of water in his hand. “Bringing you a glass of water?”
“Hm. That’s considerate,” Oscar said, without even a hint of a smile. “I really need that right now.”
Good. Good! Carlos handed him the glass with slightly trembling fingers.
A second later, the entire contents of the water glass splashed into his face. Carlos didn’t make a sound. He just let it happen. He kind of deserved it.
“Thought you really needed that,” he mumbled, once the majority of the water had dripped off his chin.
“Yep. That’s exactly what I needed it for,” Oscar said.
Carlos nodded, understanding. He sat down on the edge of the bed, drying his face with the hem of his T-shirt.
So. Oscar was clearly furious with him, and he had every right to be. Unfortunately, Oscar was also sitting there in his underwear and rumpled dress shirt, tangled in Carlos’s sheets, with the most adorable bedhead the world had ever seen, looking soft and warm, like a murderous kitten.
“Look, I’m very sorry–” Carlos began, but Oscar didn’t seem interested in hearing him out.
“As you should be!” he snapped. “Jesus Christ, Carlos! You were flirting with me all night! Do you have any idea how humiliating this is for me? I’ve been practically throwing myself at you and you were giving every sign, including taking me home! Only to run away the second I’m half-naked on your bed? At least have the decency to explain yourself! I’m a grown man – if you’re not actually into me, just say it!”
What? In what world would Carlos not be into him? He was getting hard just sitting here, being told off.
“That’s not what–” he started, stammering. “I mean, I just suddenly realized you were blackout drunk, and–”
“Blackout drunk?” Oscar snapped. “I wish!”
“Okay, so maybe you remember some of it, but you were clearly drunk, Oscar! I couldn’t… I couldn’t risk it, okay?”
Oscar still looked like he was actively considering tearing Carlos’s head off and using it as a flower vase.
“I wasn’t drunk,” he said icily. “I had, like, two mimosas. I’ve seen you drink twice that much right after arriving, mate.”
“Uh–” Carlos faltered like he’d just been punched in the stomach.
“I was tipsy, at best!”
“But… but you were smiling!”
“It’s called ‘having a good time,’ Carlos!” Oscar snapped. “Not something I usually experience around you, granted, but not exactly unheard of!”
“And you were letting those old American guys grope you in front of everyone!”
Oscar’s mouth dropped open in protest. “You mean Zak?” he groaned. “Mate, that’s my old boss. He got me this job! And he wasn’t groping me – his hand was on my mid-back, at best. You were the only one groping me in front of everyone, Jesus Christ! I only let you because I thought it was hot when you suddenly got all territorial!”
“But… but…” Carlos was running out of arguments. “You couldn’t even move without me supporting you!”
“What?” Oscar rubbed at his eyes like a headache was starting to form – one that had nothing to do with last night’s drinks. “I was supporting you just as much! Mate, I just thought we were both a little tipsy off the champagne, in the mood for a stupid mistake that wouldn’t even matter in the long run, because we already don’t get along.”
“Right,” Carlos said, gears finally turning.
“Right,” Oscar echoed.
“So,” Carlos said carefully, scooting just a little closer along the edge of the bed, “does that mean… you’re not mad at me for taking advantage of you, but rather mad at me for not taking advantage of you?”
“Hardly taking advantage, is it?” Oscar said, narrowing his eyes.
“Right,” Carlos said again, and shut up, waiting.
Oscar eyed him warily, and then, after a beat of silence, leaned back, his dress shirt falling open just enough to reveal the faintest glimpse of a nipple.
“Right,” Oscar repeated, a glint in his eye.
Carlos tackled him back into the sheets.

I’m waiting at the gate to board a plane, so have the next blip of thought for that high angst secret admirer thing
-
Lucas, the only of the kids with an ounce of emotional awareness knows that something is up with Steve. He also knows that Eddie has been in a manic grief. He doesn’t connect the two. Yet.
He sits with Steve and Robin at lunch at least a couple times a week, and screw Hellfire if they have a problem with it. Basketball team too. Steve is a full stop loser now, and Lucas was for years, he’s going to stand by him. Also, Steve saved his life, literally, repeatedly, high school popularity doesn’t exactly compare.
Ofc Steve tells him he doesn’t need to, but Lucas knows that the guy is sad about something, and extra sad that Dustin is still following Eddie like a duckling. Robin calls him out on it, but Steve has been talking about himself like he’ll never be more than a bullying popular kid. Lucas hates that most of all.
Then again, Eddie is obviously spun up about something. He’s twitchy and snappish, but he’s being nicer than normal to the jocks and popular kids. The thread he can pull on is seeing Eddie scribbling in a notebook - not his campaign notebook - but guarded just as carefully. Lucas follows him eventually and sees the poor, abused copy of the Hobbit in the library.
He reads the start of one, an apology for whatever he did that made his admirer stop writing. There’s a quote near the end from what must have been the other persons last note.
Lucas is smart. Lucas can see the pattern. He takes every single letter. Isn’t going to read them, but the one he read made it clear the both were gay, and there’s only one Eddie in school who would reference lord of the rings.
It’s for Eddie’s safety. It’s for Steve’s safety.
He doesn’t tell anyone. Not even Robin or Max, who have closed ranks around Steve.
Lucas feels like the worst person on the planet when Eddie is giddy the next day. Then his mood sinks back down as the days go by.
Since he isn’t actually the worst, Lucas doesn’t read the letters. Or tell Steve he knows. By the start of winter break, Eddie has stopped leaving letters. All of which are in a box under Lucas’ bed. He’s meaner after break. His rants are more pointed. Lucas gets called out for playing basketball and betraying nerds everywhere.
Steve is withdrawn and quiet, doesn’t even show up to lunch most days, and just keeps telling them that they don’t need to pretend they like him because of the Upside Down. That it’s okay. He knows who he really is. He laughs it off as a joke when someone argues.
But Lucas pays attention, understands why Steve thinks that, and honestly, it makes him hate the Hellfire guys a little. Makes him resent Mike and Dustin even more.

— a reason. ft aventurine
— warnings: slight cursing and violence and spoilers for the new hsr quest
— author's note: this is very long and very much a giant word vomit. first work in hsr is aventurine, i fear favoritism is real.
‘everything happens for a reason.’
aventurine has never felt so sick and tired of that phrase. something about it makes his fists clench from beneath the table and stomach flip and twist uncomfortably from within.
if everything happens for a reason, then what was the reason behind his clan’s massacre? what was the reason for the stirring in his guts whenever he looked in the mirror? what was the reason behind all of his fortune now turned to misfortune?
aventurine hated not knowing the reason.
“and this pretty thing,” jade motioned towards you by her side. standing motionless, back straight and all. “is [name]. be sure to play nice, aventurine.”
what was the reason behind your new recruitment? better yet, why were you placed as his new assistant? the last time aventurine checked, he was doing perfectly fine. steadily climbing up his rank with his risky gambles and bargaining skills. he couldn't wrap his head around it so he just sighed and accepted it.
“thank you for always looking after me, jade.” his voice carried evident sarcasm but the woman only smiled and pushed you towards his direction. he had to physically stop himself from recoiling from the action and gave you a smile.
“it's a pleasure to meet you, [name].” he held his hand out for you to take. you were hesitating, aventurine noticed. but after a few seconds you slowly slid your hand into his and gave it a firm shake. “the pleasure is all mine, mr. aventurine.”
the blonde man held onto your hand for a moment longer before slipping it away and tucking it behind his back. he surveyed your form making you want to squirm under such a gaze, and he noticed.
“let's be good friends.”
—
working with aventurine was strange, not that you didn't expect it. you spent the past six months running around the IPC from one office to another carrying mountains of papers and constantly picking up calls from the communication device in your ear. other times, you'll be out and about trailing aventurine like a lost duckling when you need to accompany him to missions that require him to be physically present.
honestly, working for the stoneheart will eventually give you an early death from a heart attack. not only is his risky gambling habits very concerning, his way of speaking wasn't exactly everyone's cup of tea. more often than not you’re needed to play as a peacemaker, the middle ground of negotiations to prevent any physical fights from starting.
but it wasn't as bad as you'd assume. you clock in around 9 in the morning and clock out at 5 in the afternoon. sometimes if certain tasks require you for overtime, you'll clock out at around 8 or 9 at night max. all the work aventurine assigns to you aren't all that difficult to handle as well. just simple reports that need to be proofread so he won't have to read over them multiple times, scheduling interviews, picking up calls and informing him of his new missions, and if the situation calls for it, you play as a spy to gather information.
overall aventurine was a good boss.
today was like any other tuesday morning. you clock in just before 9, get your coffee and another cup for your boss, pick up the last reports from the strategic investment department, and then make your way into aventurine’s office to brief him on his schedule.
his office was on the fancier ends, no surprise there as he was one of the ten stonehearts. your shoes clicking when they met the marbled floors, your eyes skimmed through the reports, trying to guess which proposal will be approved or disapproved. when you reached a familiar door, you fixed your hair and readjusted the insignia pinned to your vest. an aventurine stone, just like your boss.
you knock thrice -short, short and long- before you hear a muffled voice tell you to come in.
“good morning, mr. aventurine.” you greet with a slight bow as normal. “as punctual as ever, [name].” raising your head you nod towards topaz’s direction in acknowledgment before making your way to his desk. “here are all the reports from the last mission. i’ve read through all of them and made sure everything is in order.” placing the papers on the table, he dropped the ones in his current hand before taking the new ones, all the while, you place down his coffee which he gladly took.
“you aren't overworking them, have you, aventurine?” topaz inquired, crossing both her arms over her chest. “what kind of boss do you take me for friend? a bad one? i can assure you my assistant is in good hands.” the blonde man chipped in, his fingers flipping from one page to another as you busied yourself trying to organize the scattered reports on his table. feeling topaz's gaze, you give her a slight smile and nod, confirming that aventurine is in fact, was a good boss.
she just sighed and shook her head. motioning for you to come over, you look to aventurine who gave you a nod in turn. you walked towards topaz -feeling the searing stare of aventurine burn through the back of your head- as she took out a flash drive and handed it to you.
“this is the recording of the last meeting in regards to the mission you're tasked with. since you were still in pier port, we started without you.”
“how cruel of you, to start such an important meeting without even waiting for me.”
ah yes, the pier port incident. you smiled wearily as your shoulder slumped when you remembered what happened. you shake your head in amusement of the memory.
“thank you topaz,” you break the silence, like you always do. “i’ll be sure to look over it today.” she smiled at you in appreciation before turning her back on you and waving goodbye.
“well, that was all i came for. catch you two later.”
once the door clicked shut and the sounds of footsteps getting fainter and fainter, you took it as a sign to turn back to your boss who was already looking at you.
“is something the matter, sir?” you ask. he took off his glasses with a hum and turned his attention back to the papers he was reading. “be sure to give me a summarized report of the meeting before you go home.” you nod and take a seat on the couch in his office and boot up the laptop on the coffee table. you've always wondered when it suddenly appeared in his office, you were 98% sure it wasn't there when you first started working but aventurine always said that's it been there the entire time.
you shake the thought out of your mind and shift into work mode. hours seem to pass by in the blink of an eye before you heard aventurine call out to you. “i’m sorry mr. aventurine, i'm afraid i didn't hear you.” you heard him sigh and repeat his question. “i said, why did you join the IPC? actually, no, that's not what i want to know.”
when you looked up from the laptop in front of you, your boss had taken a seat across from you. you felt your heart thumping in nervousness.
“what exactly did you do to pique jade’s interest?”
frozen. you felt frozen on your spot. fingers stopping midway from pressing onto the keys. those beautiful eyes you've slowly grown accustomed to seeing unfiltered from his glasses, they make your heart and pulse beat in an unfamiliar rhythm.
“i come from a well-off family.” you start, suddenly feeling conscious of your background. “my parents have worked closely with the stonehearts, i suppose miss jade wanted to continue the diplomatic relationship between my family and the IPC.”
“is that the reason why you're here now?”
you simply nod even though you weren't so sure if that really was the reason.
“let me ask you another question.”
letting out a startled noise when the laptop in your lap suddenly close with a gloved hand sitting on top of it, you stare at aventurine's purple eyes that had rings of teal, something so uniquely him that you couldn't help but get lost in them. he took the laptop from your grasp and set it on the coffee table as he leaned both his arms on his legs.
“do you like working under me?”
the question caught you off guard and it showed with how the corner of aventurine’s mouth twitched up into a smirk. hiding behind a closed fist and clearing your throat, you pray that your voice wouldn't waver as you answer.
“i do.” you peaked towards his directions and he didn't seem satisfied with your answer so you list out all the reasons why you like working with him. “despite your… questionable habits, i’ve come to grow used to them as time goes on.” a fond smile made its way to your lips when you dug around your mind trying to find your memories that had aventurine in them, only to realize that he was in all of them.
“i’ve come to enjoy all your little shenanigans in missions.”
“i'll have you know, calling your boss’ plans “shenanigans” could lead to your bonus being cut by a few percent.” he huffed like a child as he decided to just sit back and cross his arms over his chest and raise his chin at you. you chuckle at the action and continue.
“ever since i was a child, i have always wanted to travel the cosmos. but since i’m the only child to my mother and father, my childhood, teenage years, and now adulthood is centered around business and trade. going out on missions with you to different planets, they heal that little part of me that wished to travel.”
“but sometimes, i truly believe that you want me to die from a heart attack.” you hear him snicker from under his breath as he fixes the watch on his wrist. “i know that as a gambler taking risks is just a part of it but aeons, do they scare me to death sometimes.”
“if i knew you cared about me so much, maybe i would tone it down a bit!” there was a playful undertone to his voice as he talked to you. you let out a laugh and shake your head. “no offense sir, but i sincerely doubt that.”
“you wouldn't be the boss i've grown accustomed to if you didn't do your risky gambles.”
something flickered in aventurine's eyes, you were sure of it. but before you could find out what it was he suddenly stood up, putting on his usual glasses and giving you a closed eyed smile.
“well, that was all what i wanted to ask you.” you wanted to ask something in return, but you never had the chance to even get a word out when he was already halfway out the door. “be sure to finish that summary before the day ends. leave it at my desk as usual.”
and just like that, the office door clicked shut.
—
“if i told you the reason, that'd be the same as revealing a trade secret.”
aventurine remembered jade's word. how could he not when they repeated in his mind like a broken record.
after he left his office, it felt like he suddenly went back in time. it just had been roughly a month after you were given the position as his assistant and aventurine wasted no moment at the end of that friday afternoon to dash in jade's office and ask her the question: why were you his assistant.
aventurine scoffed at jade's response while she only smiled. clicking his tongue in annoyance as the woman led him in circles when he kept asking. what was the reason? was it that hard to answer?
the next few days weren't necessarily the best. he was like a walking ticking time bomb, ready to blow up at any second. everyone in the IPC kept their distance from him -not like they didn't keep their distance to begin with, some started whispering among the hallways about his potential termination after a very big gamble he almost, almost, lost. what ticked him off the most, was you.
he felt so frustrated at you because why were you so damn perceptive. those past few days, the papers that were messily and hastily thrown on the giant table in his office were suddenly organized into neat piles, all held together with different colored paperclips and a sticky note of when each pile was due to be submitted. how every morning you wouldn't fail to knock thrice at his door -short, short and long- at exactly 3 minutes before 9 in the morning with two cups of coffee in your hands. or the times where you would take one good look at him and start lighting up the candles in his office that you started buying for him because you noticed he'd be slightly less stressed when the room didn't smell like fear and insecurity.
what he hated the most was even after his little temper tantrum the past few days began to subdue, you still continued your almost doting actions towards him.
when did he start anticipating your methodical knocks 3 minutes before 9? when did he suddenly grow disappointed whenever someone knocked on his door and it wasn't you? topaz had suddenly grown confused when he suddenly came into the meeting room with a cup of coffee in his hand and when she asked about it he would simply say, “well, my darling assistant bought it for me!”. the multiple scented candles in his office that burned too quickly so at the end of every month he'd have you go out and buy some more.
when did he start using his left hand -the hand he left bare from rings, the same hand that shook in fear of losing- to guide the small of your back away from the crowd whenever you would accompany him to missions?
when did he start taking off the glasses that hid the eyes he wanted to sell to someone else?
it was so confusing yet so simple at the same time. aventurine had grown fond of his little assistant. he has grown fond of you. and that was all there is to it. after all, why would he go out of his way to get that customized brooch that you wear every single day when you come to work if he hadn't. how his chest would swell with pride whenever you spoke with higher positioned officers in the IPC and how they would avert their gaze because of the pin on your vest.
and he knows that you know of his sudden change in demeanor. you just never say a word for his sake. how he went from being a distant and acquainted boss to a friend. an actual friend. and that was supposed to be it. he did say in your first meeting that you should be good friends, but how was he supposed to keep his words after the little stunt you pulled at pier port?
it was a simple mission, negotiate and get the upper hand, nothing more and certainly nothing less. like any other mission, he was accompanied by you and some other people under the IPC. everything was going smoothly until one of them just had to open their mouth and talk shit about his already dreadful past just because he had forgotten to put on his glasses. he truly has grown a bit too comfortable with you around, and he didn't like it.
“what's a sigonian scum like you doing in the IPC? why don't you crawl back into the hole you came from?”
he just sighed. shaking his head, hiding his left hand behind his back, shielding it away from everyone's gaze as it shook with anger, disgust, and the tantalizing question of why.
why did he have to go through this?
and then you did something out of the ordinary.
the sweet assistant of aventurine suddenly pulled out the gun situated on your hip and pointed it directly to the man’s forehead, a deathly glimmer shining in your eyes as your index threateningly ghosted over the trigger.
“if you do not take back what you said just now, i won't hesitate to put a bullet or two in that empty skull of yours.”
then you started walking, and he started backing up. you didn't stop until the man was standing on the edge of the port, one simple push and he'd be drowned in the vast icy oceans. that is, if he wasn't already drowning in the fury of your eyes.
aventurine felt his body move in instinct. his left hand holding your wrist and slowly putting it down at your side. he gave a half assed apology about your behavior and ushered you to your original destination. this time, he kept his hand on your back, specifically near the gun on your hips to make sure you didn't point it at someone else.
“do they always speak to you that way?” you ask barely above whisper. eyes strained one the road you were walking one while his bore into your very being. “i’ve grown used to it. be sure to not point that gun of yours to any potential partners, m’kay?” to prove his point, he tapped the gun on your hips with his finger and you just sighed. a simple yes stumbling past your lips before being enveloped by silence.
aventurine was sure. he was very, very, sure that was the last nail in the coffin, and the answer to the question he's been asking.
the entire day, you stuck by his side. glued to the fucking hip and no one dared to utter a single word about him. the meeting went smoothly and when everyone was preparing to go home, he called you over and said:
“that stunt you pulled earlier, stays between us, alright, friend?”
and you simply nod in understanding.
you carry your bags onto the ship to take you back home only to be taken aback when aventurine comes to steal it away from your hands. “take it as thanks for earlier.” he remembered that look of shock before it turned into something else -what it was he didn't know because you turned away before he could even fathom what of it made his stomach do flips.
even when he came to drop off your things at your personal room, he found himself lingering by the door. watching you unpack your things as he stood idly. you would eventually turn to him and ask if he needed anything more, and out of curiosity he asked: “why did you point your gun at that man?” he will never forget the look of puzzlement on your face when he asked.
“because he said something unpleasant to you. as your assistant, i can't allow others to simply trample on your name.”
he spent the night staring up at the ceiling while laying on his bed. your words mingling in with jade's in his mind, trying to fit the two like puzzle pieces to ease the racing of his heart and uneasiness of his mind. he didn't like assuming things. a conjecture such as this would cost him too much, but tonight he indulged himself in the thought.
picking up his phone and messaging jade, he laid his forearm over his eyes and sighed.
“this room smells horrible…” he muttered. the strong scent of chlorine made his mind spin. making him miss the scented candles you had slowly but surely placed inside his office. he'd grown so fond of them that he'd bought some of his own to place around his home. “ah… i think i'm screwed.”
—
it has been approximately 3 system hours since you arrived in penacony, and roughly a few system hours before aventurine's eventual demise.
topaz had just finished speaking with the trailblazer and their companions. when they had left you stood next to her and stared at the giant prison turned hotel.
“you… don't seem too worried.” topaz said, you felt her gaze but you didn't turn to look at her, instead you just gazed into nothing. “it would be a lie if i said i wasn't worried.” you were most definitely worried, terrified even. no matter how many times aventurine does his high risk gambles, you will never get used to it, not when it causes ghostly hands to squeeze at your heart at the sheer thought of him losing. the thought of losing him.
“but i trust miss jade's judgment. i trust aventurine.”
roughly a day before his departure to penacony, curiosity got the best of you and you stuck around the meeting room in secret when aventurine stayed behind.
“what can i do for you, aventurine?” jade's voice slightly echoed in the empty room. your hands slightly shook in fear of being caught, but you were just so curious about what has been going on with your boss that you couldn't fight the urge to eavesdrop a bit. “oh nothing much. i take it you received my message?” you assumed the woman nodded because aventurine continued. “i must admit, your little plan worked. but is it really necessary?”
jade stood up from her seat, her heels clicked on the marble floor and aventurine followed her until they were by the door.
“well, it's better to stay safe than sorry. and besides, this doesn't count as a complaint, right?”
you heard him chuckle. somehow, even though you hid behind a pillar you felt his stare bore into your being. you could almost imagine those purple eyes that had rings of teal in them that made you weak in the knees.
“no, not necessarily. i could never consider it as a complaint.” he took a moment before asking another question. “but i want to hear it from you, friend. why did you assign [name] as my assistant?”
“it's rather simple really,” jade replied. “you need a reason to leave penacony alive, no? i simply made it easier for you.”
you? the reason for aventurine's will to live? it seemed rather silly. how you, a simple assistant, be so much of importance to someone like aventurine, but with how topaz came to hold the hand that gripped the brooch he had given you, you thought otherwise.
this half a year you've been working with him, you like to think that you've gotten to know him very well.
how when you stood beside him as he sat himself in another gamble, he would always lay his left hand on his lap, fingers curled into fists so tight you were afraid his palms were bleeding.
how he always hid his “weaker” hand behind his back in dire situations to hide his fear.
or when he would always take off his glasses in his office whenever you were there. and that laptop you were 98% sure wasn't there when you started working? aventurine apparently got it specifically for you so you could work in his office.
but what you were most sure of was:
“aventurine doesn't make deals he knows he won't benefit from. he'll win, he always does. he'll come back, i know it.”
