¡leclerc-s speaks! i don't think i ever mentioned that isabella is an engineering student, so my bad, but i'm mentioning it now! originally i was going to post this part when the season started back up again but then i remembered dts was coming out today so i putting it out now. this is also because i'm working on a dts part and i mentioned this specific move in that and i realized i couldn't post that without posting this one first.

This is my first ever ask, so apologies if I am doing it wrong.

An aspect about the Octoboss' character I find fascinating is his contrast as a leader compared to others in the series. In Furiosa we see leaders treat their subordinates like expendable liabilities: Dementus sacrificing men such as when Furiosa is sniping at him in the Bullet Farm, or splitting off from the remainder of his loyalists in the finale and using them as diversions, and of course killing the Mortifiers for the Gastown Trojan Horse. There is also Immortan Joe and the People Eater; when Dementus arrives at the Citadel they both had a young War Boy sacrifice himself (whom was visibly hesitating) as a display of power. Then when Dementus returns to negotiate with Immortan Joe he has that warlord painter in that spike-chair contraption trying to use him as a hostage. When that warlord gets killed Immortan does not react at all, as a refusal to be intimidated. The People Eater himself is killed by Immortan when Max uses him as a human shield, and again he does not react or care despite his usefulness. Now there is the Octoboss. Despite him being a sadistic killer, shown when he killed Furiosa's mom, he genuinely cares for his men. Firstly, when Dementus asks him to choose 10 men for the Trojan Horse, he does not order them but asks for volunteers. Then when Dementus kills his men he is initially in shock, yelling "What are you doing?" then in rage calling him scum. We can also see he was FURIOUS(a) because of the contemplation stare he gives after everyone begins sacking Gastown, and, despite being at Dementus' side in every scene prior he is interestingly missing in the negotiation at the Citadel. This all marks the beginning of their rift, again all because Dementus killed his men showcasing that they were more than expendable pawns to him. His men in turn display a good form of loyalty and respect to him. First in that famous, "I take orders from the Octoboss" line, showing that despite Dementus often being treated as the main leader, the Mortifiers understand a chain of command where Octoboss is the priority. Second, when they are all scouting Gastown Octoboss says, "Food and water for gasoline. Beats scavenging." This tells us that despite their success as raiders, they very much would prefer a more stable and comfortable life. They attain it, but eventually the rift between Dementus and Octoboss grows so much that he decides to leave him and go back to scavenging. His men in turn, could have stayed doing trade in Gastown but instead they FOLLOW Octoboss back to the wasteland! Not really an ask, I was just thinking about this and wanted to tell someone, and it felt fitting since this blog is the one that convinced to put Octoboss in my cosplay wishlist ^^

There's a ton of commentary and observations here I love, and a few things I'd love to dig into more! 1. "An aspect about the Octoboss' character I find fascinating is his contrast as a leader compared to others in the series" YES, ME TOO. Octoboss and the Mortiflyers seem more close-knit than any other faction we've seen. I agree that he genuinely cares for them and values them, given everything we're shown in the film. He's not using them as human shields or asking them to blow themselves up, War Boy style. I also like how he asks for volunteer fake War Boys for the Trojan Horse Gastown mission. We even see that some of his volunteers are not-so-bald (look at the guy driving the rig), showing that he puts their consent above following the order for "the balder, the better!" Instead of saying "No, your hair's too long," he put his long-haired volunteer in a place that his hair wouldn't be apparent. He works WITH his men to find a compromise between what they want and what the mission needs.

2. "Second, when they are all scouting Gastown Octoboss says, "Food and water for gasoline. Beats scavenging." You have SO many good points in this section! I also agree that Octoboss craves a more stable life for his men. I believe this desire for stability it part of what motivates his treatment of Mary Jabassa, rather than pure sadism. Notice how desperate he sounds when he's torturing her. I think he sees her as someone who holds the keys to a future where his men — his found family — isn't starving or dying of thirst. Of course he'll do anything to get those answers out of her. I headcanon that there's more to the situation, but we'll get to that later. and it really speaks to his character that so many of his men follow him back out into the Wasteland. The Octoboss doesn't have an abundance of food, water, fuel, or bullets, he knows they can get by with scavenging. And they follow, because I believe that Octoboss, as a leader, gives them more than just their base physiological needs. (See chart below.)

Life in Gastown may meet their physiological needs, but their safety needs are a toss-up, given that Dementus was willing to sacrifice some Mortiflyers in the Trojan Horse act. Safety is also a toss-up in nomadic Wasteland scavenger life, but if they break away from Gastown, at least the Mortiflyers know they won't be betrayed like Dementus did to them. People need more than food and water to thrive, they need psychological safety, friendship and a sense of connection. I think Octoboss' leadership provides that for his men, whether they're in a stable location or they're wandering the desert.

3. "Despite him being a sadistic killer, shown when he killed Furiosa's mom..."

I genuinely think there's more to the Mary Jabassa torture situation than just sadism. Notice how stressed he sounds during the interrogation. He doesn't seem cool, collected, or even in control. He's hidden his face behind his mask, but his voice sounds painfully desperate. Now let's get into speculation territory. The Mad Max franchise shows people afflicted with grief and trauma lashing out in violent ways. Look at Max himself in Mad Max (1979) — he's a loving dad and husband, but when all of that is taken from him, he goes on a rampage of revenge, and even invents the Saw trap (saw your foot off or get blown up). But we don't look at Max and say "Sadistic killer!" And while I think it's natural to squirm over the idea of Max inflicting this Saw trap on someone, the story gives us the context to understand WHY he went this far. We aren't given much context for Octoboss' actions. Naturally, this is because the events of the film are the History Man's retelling, told to him from Furiosa's perspective. We're not given the chance to know Octoboss' inner world, but if we're really immersing ourselves in the narrative, we have to face the idea that Octoboss is a whole person with his own trauma, vulnerabilities, fears, dreams, and relationships, all of which spans far outside of what we see onscreen. First off, we can point to his desire for a stable, secure life for his men. Mary knows the way to the Green Place, and her answers could give his Mortiflyers a better life. Let's also look at one of the men that Mary killed in the camp — the guy on the left-hand side of this screenshot. His name's listed as Hungry Eyes, and he's played by Tim Burns. (Tim Burns also played the guy that Max put in the Saw trap!)

Given his outfit, I believe this guy was a member of Octoboss' gang. He's also trusted to be one of the people who guard Furiosa and keep "brutes" away from her, meaning he's trusted within the gang not to be a creep toward a little girl. Mary kills him, as he's part of the crew holding her daughter captive. Understandable, but let's look at this from Octo's perspective. As he'd see it, someone he knows and trusts (and likely views as family) has been murdered by this interloper. Of course he's not gonna have any mercy in dealing with her. Straying completely into headcanon land, I think Octoboss may have some long-standing issues with the Green Place. Shameless self promotion — I wrote a fic about this! Link here. It details his early life, and how he was orphaned. Let's just say it involves the Green Place's policy of leaving no witnesses! And to cap all this off, I wanna give the disclaimer that I AM an Octoboss roleplayer in a Mad Max RP and discussion server on Discord, so I have a different approach to him than others. I rotate him in my mind constantly, trying to understand what makes him tick. I'm always trying to build his inner world and explore his feelings/motivations to better understand him as a human being, which involves exploring beyond the boundaries of what the movie shows us. Like his actor, I had to build a backstory for him that explains his actions and behaviors, and while I don't claim any of this to be Definitive Canon, it's definitely something to chew on for entertainment purposes.

I could ramble on endlessly about him, but I want to say I really enjoyed having a chance to discuss this character we both love! Thank you so much for the message!

Okay so I saw 'Once Upon a Studio' yesterday and I mean...I did not ask to be punched in the gut with emotions Disney! Spoilers under the cut in case you haven't seen it yet

-First off, just the concept of the animation studio almost being like Night at the Musem where the pictures come alive was so much fun.

Steve's reaction to the car Hop stole was so funny. "Oh screw Todd. Steve's her daddy now."

I internally panicked when the car wouldn't start and then Billy showed up

I thought it was a little funny while Murray and Hop ran into soldiers and Murray tried talking out of it but Hop just blasted them with his gun

I also laughed at the fact that Murray's codename was "Bald Eagle"

Loved that Steve rescued the group by ramming into Billy's car

The whole part with Suzie and Dustin on the radio was so cute!

It was terrifying when Billy got El and told her to be still like he did with Heather

I was glad that El brought Billy back by telling him the memories she saw but then he sacrificed himself!

Even though I didn't like Billy, I was sad for Max

Also, I think it would have been interesting to see how Billy changed after being under the control of Mind Flayer and doing horrible things because of that

I sobbed when Hopper died, but I think he survived because the Russians in the post-credit scene mentioned that they had an American that they had prisoner (this theory might be a stretch, but I'm holding onto any hope that Hop is alive)

The way Robin got Steve and her jobs at the movie store with Keith was funny

There's so much grief in the scenes that are 3 months later. Grief for Hop and Billy, as well as Byers and El leaving Hawkins

I did laugh when Max and Lucas teased Dustin by singing the song he sung to Suize and he flipped them off in response.

And El lost her powers!

When she started reading the speech Hop had prepared to share about her dating Mike, I started bawling

Who's ready for sad fan theory??

All aboard for some sad TriMax feels, spoilers ahead!

Trigun Stampede did a tidy job of cleaning up a few plot holes left behind by Mr. Nightow, esp. the one that bothered me a lot-- how the devil Conrad never died of old age. See figure 1 and figure 2 below, Conrad when he first meets the twins (a bit of hair) and at the time of his death (no hair)

Looking pretty good for a 200+ year old guy. He went from a balding man clocking in his 30s, to IDK, late-40s (or however Nightow feels like drawing him in any particular frame lol). How? Let's inventory what we can be sure of:

Conrad was born and raised somewhere in outer-space, perhaps Earth, perhaps not.

He is an accomplished space-stuff engineer, and a top crewmember of SEEDS, he's brought in and out of cryo sleep for emergencies

Somehow he survived the same crash that killed Rem, and made a comfortable life under the name Count Revenant Vasquez

Knives just shows up in his living room one night to recruit him

However, it did take more than 80 years for Knives to mature into an adult. Eighty! See Figure 3 below, from Vol 12 Ch 5, he still has a relatively boy-like countenance. Don't worry about what he's up to in this scene, shhhhh, it's fine.

So guessing that Knives finished maturing into an adult, found his favorite space fashion, and learned how to manspread on a couch (See Fig. 5), that must have been another 10-20 years, maybe?

Conrad was definitely at July before and after its destruction. He helped Legato pull Knives out of the rubble. That means we have a minimum of ~25 years. So the window of time for entering Knives service is 60-25 years. I'm going to spitball that at the start of the story, he spent 110 years as the Count, and then 40 years as Knives's subordinate. Math: I did it. You're welcome.

He only looks like he's aged 30 years (max) from start to finish, though.... It's somewhat plausible that he could afford to pay for more cryosleep as Count Vasquez on and off for 110 years, but would Knives also let his top scientist cryosleep as much as he wanted for another 40-ish years? (This is not accounting for any special treatment from obvious daddy issues because Knives kept Conrad around as a secret father figure.)

Would it even be that practical for ship survivors/Knives/anyone to just sit on that kind of knowledge/experience for years at a time, in a desperate place such as this? Or maybe... he just wasn't aging. He's a space person who was genetically modified to keep Project SEEDS going for as long as possible. And The Count was an alias created after it became obvious he wasn't getting older.

But you know who was also a top crewmate. Someone who would been also modified to ensure the best possible odds for SEEDS...

It's likely Rem would have also had Conrad's dubiously long lifespan. Rem, and Vash, and Knives (and maybe even Conrad, even though he's a lame ass loser) could have been a family for 150+ years. Or, if I'm totally wrong here, she could have similarly been afforded the same privileged treatment Conrad managed to secure for himself (in the middle of century-and-a-half long crisis, no less).

All this time... they might have been happy. And Knives? He's no dummy. He knew.

Ugh, the more news and analysis comes out, the more sad I get. I don't know if they deliberately built the car to be understeery or if it just turned out that way. I don't know which of these options will be worse, purposefully building it to make your slower driver comfortable or accidentally ending up there because you don't know how to build a car. This is the reason we say you can't compare charles and max currently. Besides having complete faith in your team and pitwall, Max has the car built around him to whatever suits him, and if he's not entirely comfortable, they'll change it to make sure that it's what he wants like last year, there's none of this making them both happy bs.

And people saying that charles has to adapt to the new car that doesn't suit him like Carlos had to adapt last year are completely missing the point. I have no doubt he'll manage to adapt fine and pretty sure he'll be faster than sainz as the last 2 years have shown, but we all know that the only way to keep up with max/red bull right now is to be perfect and that means giving your faster driver the car preference that suits him best and he can extract his maximum, we all saw how that was at the beginning of the season.

Also with them saying they hope to try and fix the front limitation, I hope they mean a complete overhaul and not what they were doing towards the end of last year with charles where they just keep adding more front wing and he has to deal. That's not how you win races. You know, if you gave me the choice of charles only having the car that's fast and suits him but having a mediocre strategy team or having the greatest strategy team but a car that he's not happy with, I'd take the first option. Since the beginning of last year, seeing him in a car that he's truly happy with, I really belive he'd be able to show his talent even if the team isn't on his level.

I really hope all this is just us stressing over nothing and it all turns out fine.

You know, that's an interesting point you make about having a dominant car vs lacklustre strategic team, because I've seen a lot of people pointing out, especially in the wake of last year, that Mercedes's strategy isn't actually bulletproof. They don't shoot themselves in the foot half as much as the Ferrari pit wall, but they seem to almost get confused when they're thrown off their game and have to chase rather than defend. They seem to be very... idk conservative and careful in their strategies? Which is fine if you've got a dominant car but when you're on the back foot and you could benefit from a not-so-obvious strategy... they don't really seem inclined to risk it for the biscuit. So it's believed that having such a dominant car for the past few seasons has kind of...taken the heat off the pit wall or "covered up" some of their less spectacular strategies because with a quick car their driver was in tune with they could recover fairly easily from any strategic boo-boos.

Red Bull can quickly adapt to whatever's going on around them and respond to the situation at hand rather than going with the most conservative option or doggedly sticking to tHe rAcE sIMulatIOns like Ferrari. I mean if the race simulation tells me the hard tyre will be okay but I can see with my own two eyes and probably hear radio messages about how the Alpines are decidedly struggling with it and think it was a mistake--- 🤔

I was looking through my Art of Fallout 4 book and it really got me thinking about industrial Fallout 4 feels like it was meant to be. I understand concept art is never meant to be the final product, the whole vibe of the book gives off this feeling that Fallout 4 was supposed to take place during a re-emergence period of heavy industry.

There's one spread in the book that really caught my attention. It was downtown Boston, filled with traders, mercenaries, travelers, and shops surrounding these massive rusted futuristic buildings. Another picture of an early Diamond City showed streets made of metal grating, pre-war trailers stacked on top of scaffolding, wires and cables everywhere. It doesn't look ramshackle or like it was built a few years ago. It looks like an actual crowded and populated city hub. It looks like an actual form of industry is going on, like someone is making metal, and things are being broken down and reused. There was even a much more refined farm and water system in the concept art of Diamond City than what we see in-game, where it's a few trees and a bald kid looking over a little tub of dirty mud water.

The emerging industry of metalworking and machinery would have made a lot more sense, considering no one really seems to do anything in Fallout 4. People supposedly farm and trade, but there's only two cities in the whole game, there's no real farms, and everyone plants the same thing. You hear a lot about the Triggermen having control of some massive chems trade and nothing ever really comes out of it. You can't even talk to the head boss in charge, who literally sits around as an NPC in a place that was supposedly once famous for its chem-fueled parties (again, something that you hear once and find no evidence to ever back up). I'll continue with my idea on the Triggermen but I'd like to hear your opinions first

You're completely on-point with the remark on industry. At the risk of beating a dead horse, while in-game new Vegas wasn't exactly bustling with life and activity, there's enough trade caravans, stores, and even in-dialogue reference to groups like the gun runners to show that trade and industry is meant to be happening. In 4 there are the absolute basics sometimes addressed (it generally avoids the Mad Max problem of "what are these people surviving on") but nobody seems to be making clothing or tools, everyone has shitty pipe pistols that only by miracle and removal of the weapon degradation system don't blow up after the third shot, and there's only one town, which it's entirely possible to miss in a regular playthrough, which we're told is a caravan hub (caravans are also still just a few dudes with guns and a pack mule, which New Vegas did for cowboy flavor but FO4 has them rambling on along casually through fucking warzones)

Some of this probably ties into the abortion of a settlement system, so workshops/ manufacturing centers, caravans, doctors and so forth don't develop outside the few major cities unless you build them, but, I mean, who wants to do that shit. Also it makes the world weaker by making everyone do nothing until you show up, which they've been doing for decades.

At a certain point we're just gonna keep butting into the answer "the devs were lazy, didn't think all these things through, and also thought you were so stupid you wouldn't believe an apocalypse happened if people weren't living in rusty shacks eating rats

Oregon Files Book 15 X Bones Season 3/4 Crossover Part One of ?

So this is kind of niche. For anyone not familiar with The Oregon Files, it's a book series where Juan Cabrillo and his crew go around solving cases for the CIA. Bones is a tv show about a forensic anthropologist and her pet FBI agent.

Lizbeth Cabrillo is my own original character. Everyone else belongs to the creators of Bones and The Oregon Files. Although, you'd have a hard time asking Clive Cussler anything since he's currently dead.

Lizbeth Cabrillo sat in the infirmary of the Oregon, Julia Huxley closely examining a skull in front of her. "And you're sure it's been- chewed?"

Julia nodded grimly. "Yep. Boiled and then eaten. A gruesome way to die. Have you contacted Dr. Brennan yet?"

Lizbeth nodded, then stood up. "Juan and Eric should be changing course soon. We'll get there by nine tonight and then go to the Jeffersonian tomorrow. You should come, Hux."

Julia removed her gloves and turned to Lizbeth. "It would be interesting to see the greatest forensic anthropologist of our time working on the bones I found. But, there's one thing you shouldn't talk to her about. Dr. Zack Addy."

"Why? Were they close?" Lizbeth asked, moving to walk with Julia as they headed towards the Oregon's control room. Julia laughed mirthlessly.

"He was her intern and then associate until a few months ago. And no, he wasn't murdered. He's a murderer," Julia said, shrugging when Lizbeth looked at her incredulously.

Eric Stone, the chief helmsman of the Oregon, walked up to them, wearing a button-down shirt and khakis. He had a lipstick stain on his cheek. "Eric, I hope Silvia doesn't wear water-proof lipstick."

Eric looked confused, before rubbing at his cheek and sighing with relief when he saw pink lipstick on his fingers. Lizbeth chuckled, and Eric flustered for a second before saying, "I came down here to tell you we'll be in Washington by about eight to eight-thirty. Oh, and The Chairman asked me to tell you he has Dr. Brennan and Special Agent Booth's files for you to look over tonight."

Temperance Brennan was at work bright and early today. Zack's confession had rattled her, but she knew she could compartmentalize this, just as she had Booth's 'death'.

Cam came up behind her, saying, "Hey, Brennan. There are some people here to see us. They say they work for The Corporation, whatever that is."

Brennan turned to see four people walking towards her. Three women and two men. One of the women was tanned and wore dark hair in a ponytail that held neatly behind her. Next to her was a woman with much paler skin who wore a pinstriped suit and her hair in a low bun. The final woman had an extremely dark complexion with sharp features and searching eyes.

The two men were both caucasian, one with blonde hair and a prosthetic leg, and the other with a ring of red around his bald head and a gut that made him look like a typical sitcom dad. The blonde man smiled, saying, "I'm Juan Cabrillo. Chairman of The Corporation and Captain of The Oregon."

The blonde woman in a pinstriped suit walked up next to him. "Lizbeth Cabrillo. His wife and a Corporation Operative. I'm ex-CIA and Special Forces."

The dark-skinned woman said, "Raven Malloy. Corporation Operative and former military."

"Max Hanley. President of The Corporation," the balding redhead said, grinning and reaching out to shake Brennan's hand.

"And I'm the woman who contacted your organization. Julia Huxley, I'm the chief medical officer on the Oregon, the ship that found these remains."

Booth eyed the newcomers suspiciously. "How do we know you aren't lying?"

Lizbeth chuckled. "Special Agent Seeley Booth, thirty-five. You have a child with your ex-girlfriend Rebecca named Parker Booth. You read Green Lantern comics in the bathtub."

Booth looked surprised and also concerned. "How do you know what I do in the bathtub?"

"You'd be surprised what we know, Seeley. We have CIA and FBI connections along with multiple others. Unterschätzen Sie uns nicht. The Corporation weiß mehr, als Sie jemals wissen werden."

"You're German?" Cam asked, and Lizbeth nodded.

"I've always loved being German and ex-Special Forces. It makes people think I'm going to want to burn them at the stake before they've even met me, which makes up for my bubbly personality. Blöd," Lizbeth said, chuckling and motioning towards Julia Huxley. The doctor brought out a box, filled with a skull and several other bones.

"Have fun, Doctor Brennan."

"They're very interesting," Lizbeth said before taking a bit of her salad. She, Raven, Julia, Juan, and Max had all gotten rooms at a local hotel and they were eating supper at a local cafe that claimed to have the best burgers around.

"Is it just me, or does that Dr. Brennan give everyone else the heebie-jeebies too?" Max asked, taking a large bite of his burger before spitting it out. "Is this hamburger made of vegetables?"

Julia chuckled. "You're the one who went into the bathroom while we were ordering. Your fries are real."

"I've got another question. Booth, the guy with the kid, are he and the good doctor dating?" Max asked, happily eating his fries like a small child.

Juan and Lizbeth looked at each other. "Well, according to their file, Brennan and Booth's psychologist, and multiple co-workers, they aren't. But, everyone's surprised they haven't hooked up yet."

Raven chewed thoughtfully. "There are absolutely feelings there. They act the same way towards each other that I'm told you two used to act before dating."

Juan choked on the water he'd just taken a sip of. Max chuckled, pulling something out of his pocket. Max clicked play on what Lizbeth now realized was a recording. "Booth took a bullet for Brennan a few weeks back. He also stayed with her at home when she was being stalked, accidentally triggering an explosion set for her in his own face, putting him in the hospital until someone realized he'd been broken out by a co-worker to save Dr. B."

Two different voices had been speaking, but Lizbeth knew from hearing that there had to be something between Booth and Dr. Brennan. She clicked pause as she heard footsteps behind her. Brennan and Booth, talking happily, passed by them, barely noticing them until Lizbeth whistled to get their attention.

Booth turned his head - his hand going towards his gun - before he relaxed when he saw who had called him over. He placed his hand on Brennan's shoulder, a gesture that Lizbeth didn't let slip her eye, and guided her to their booth.

"I don't think I was properly introduced to all of you," Booth said when he sat down, eyeing Max carefully. "You're Max, right?"

Max nodded, saying, "Yep. At least, that's what my birth certificate says."

Booth nodded. "As long as you don't turn out too much like the other Max I know, we should be fine and dandy."

Brennan slapped his shoulder. "Booth! I hardly think that's professional! You shouldn't be comparing a man you just met to my- an arrested and convicted felon."

Interesting. The good doctor had faltered, saying 'my' before an. Maybe she was related to this other convicted felon named Max? "Speaking of professional," Lizbeth said, trying to segway into her questions about their case. "I'd love to know more about the psychologist who spoke on television about this "Gormagon." And whether or not you think Gormagon killed the vic we found sleeping with the fish."

Booth laughed. "Sweets will love you for noticing he was on tv. He's been begging us all month to tell him what we think about his interview."

Brennan was about to answer when bullets cascaded through the window, shattering the glass. Lizbeth looked around, her stomach dropping when she realized Juan had been hit. "Juan! Stay with me, okay, love? Julia, go get your med bag. Max, call whoever you can who's still on the ship. Raven, call 911. Other people were shot or hit by the shattered glass."

Booth looked around, watching Brennan run to help an older man who'd slipped as he was walking from his table as the bullets had been fired. "What do you want me to do?"

"Call the FBI, and then Langston Overholt. Tell Lang Lizbeth asked you to call, he'll understand."

"Why should I call them?"

"Because someone just shot my husband and I'd like to know what bastard it was," Lizbeth said, trying to keep her voice steady. This situation reminded her too much of Mike's death. Mike Trono, one of their crew members who had sacrificed his life for The Oregon, had died in Lizbeth's arms. She wasn't about to let her husband do the same.

Sidelines are for sports games, not characters of color

I want to address the somewhat awful job ST has done with its POC characters not just in Vol 2, but over the course of the show. I've done a similar post talking about the queer rep in the show if you want to check that out.

I'm gonna start with Lucas, who's been sidelined from the beginning. I get this is rural Indiana in the 80's and you wouldn't expect a whole ton of POC characters fine fine fine whatever. But if you're going to include exactly one (1) POC main, you better hope to god you do a good job with that character. Look at S1 -- Will was central to the plot in a major way (duh), Mike was huge in pushing everyone to find Will and was well-defined by his close relationship with him, and Dustin's intelligence set him apart even in a group full of so-called nerds. What did Lucas get to distinguish him in any particular way? Nothing much. Even moving into S2 his character remained distinctly less fleshed out than the others

One part of S1 I did very much like, however, was this scene. I thought it was a great way to address the kind of casual racism that people who grow up with privilege can often display, even unintentionally.

Mike and Lucas had both showed up to school dressed as the ghostbuster Venkman and Mike tried to argue that Lucas should be Winston Zeddemore. Lucas pointed out that Mike only said that because Zeddemore was black, and he didn't want to be Zeddemore because he, like so many black characters in film, wasn't as interesting or influential as many of the white mains.

Ironically, a similar fate ended up befalling Lucas. He began to be drawn more into the spotlight in S2 and S3, but it was more in reference to his relationship with Max than anything else. Listen, I love Lumax (their relationship outclasses Mileven by a mile, argue with the wall) but Lucas needing a relationship with a white character in order to gain real traction within the show and the fandom is pretty fucking shitty.

S4 finally put Lucas' character on par with the others in terms of screentime, lines, and fandom attention, and the Duffers managed this oh-so-impressive feat through the power of... basketball. Come on, I mean really?

Yes, from what we've seen basketball is the fastest path to popularity in Hawkins High (Steve, Billy, Tommy H, Jason) but to make the only black character suddenly a basketball star when he's shown zero interest or athletic ability up until now... it doesn't sit right with me, let's put it that way.

Erica falls into similar black stereotyping as Lucas. We see little development for her over the seasons and from the first moment she's on-screen she's very much the Sassy Black Girl. There's nothing wrong with characters displaying stereotyped traits as long as you can give them other characteristics that define them beyond the typical fallbacks. If your character is essentially reduced to that stereotype, however, it's a problem. All we know of Erica, beyond her never-ending supply of clapbacks and sarcasm, is that she likes DND and My Little Pony. 90% of her lines are full of sass, no matter who she's talking to, and while it's entertaining at times (her calling Murray a bald bastard was funny as hell lmaoo) it can quickly get old. Erica's not the worst black rep I've ever seen, not by a long shot, but the Duffers definitely could've done better with her.

[Having the only black female character also be a staunchly avowed capitalist feels a little weird to me, but I honestly don't have a way to properly articulate why so I'm not going to go into that rn. Maybe in a later post.]

Watching Vol 2 was a crazy fucking experience for a lot of reasons, but watching Jason and his little basketball cult fully beat up black kids significantly younger than them was... really something. A mostly-grown guy full on rugby tackling a middle school girl with aggression that far outweighed the situation...

You can't tell me there wasn't racial motivation there, but the situation really wasn't handled that way on-screen. It wasn't filmed to really make the audience think about the kind of aggressions (micro or otherwise) that black kids in bumfuck Indiana would experience. It wasn't addressed as racially-motivated. It wasn't addressed at all, actually. Thanks to the racist implications of that moment (and, in fact, the racist implications of Jason's entire attitude towards Lucas & Erica) never being addressed ever, the whole scene came across as more gratuitous violence than anything. I'm not saying the show needs to hold the audience's hand and look in their eyes and spell out J-A-S-O-N = R-A-C-I-S-T, but the S1 Zeddemore scene proved there are ways to intertwine talks about racism into the script, ways to address problems like xenophobia without making it stilted or shoehorned in.

When you show the brutal beating of black children and then move on too quickly for the audience to fully process what happened, it takes away from the heavier implications of such violence.

Moving on from the Sinclairs, we have Kali.

I liked her character very much, I'm going to be honest. The way she embodied El's angrier, more violent inner voices, with El's return to Hawkins representing her turning her back on that side of her while never truly facing up to it, made her an excellent lens for the audience to see more of El than what we got in S1.

But brown women in media too-often fall into one of two categories.

the docile, meek woman who comes from a patriarchal culture and will always defer to the men in her life, even when it goes against her own desires and dreams

The angry, probably violent woman who rages against the world because she has been wronged in the past

Again, a brown character being one of these two things isn't necessarily bad, but when we're left room for little else around all the resentment Kali's built up? When there's almost no middle ground between the two extremes?? Let's not rely on the old stereotypes over and over and over again, please.

I once again feel the need to establish that this is not hate on the character himself, Argyle was legitimately one of the best parts of the California group and I love him with my whole entire heart (& also Eduardo Franco deserves so much better from this shitty fandom).

But the first Latine character on the show being a stoner? That's the best y'all could come up with?? Argyle was funny, he was useful to the plot, and he was a nice foil for the often-serious characters he's surrounded by, but all that being said, I couldn't quite get rid of the nagging irk in the back of my mind every time he was on screen because the stoner Latine character??? At this point, all the blatantly stereotyped characters just make this shit boring and predictable. I don't even have anything new to say about Argyle because it's nothing I didn't just address in terms of Erica, Lucas & Kali.

I feel like the treatment of ST's queer and POC characters is definitely different. We see constant abuse and mistreatment of queer characters without getting any outwardly, happily-queer endings for them; with the POC characters it strikes me more as the typical sidelining and stereotyping that we see in a lot of mainstream media. I'm not going to sit here and argue over which is worse or which is more harmful to audiences, they're both shitty and I'm tired of it all.
