i LOVE the idea of possessive protective julien but i can't lie i get this image in my head that she's just like scrappily fighting someone a foot and a half taller than her on your behalf and i- 🫢

i think julien is 100% someone who is safe and secure with soft!gf, like married or not, this is her ride or die, she knows that her partner isn't going anywhere and she doesn't feel the need to be possessive because who's in her bed every night? ya know?

i am a rep era kaylor. i started paying attention to things with reputation, so i was not really paying attention closely during this period of time you’re asking about. so, my below thoughts are just based on me taking a second to google and check my chronological understanding of how things went based on how i’ve researched in the past.

in actuality taylor only “disappeared” for about a year. maybe you are getting the 3 year number from the period of time between 1989 and rep release years? but taylor’s instagram reset only happened several months before reputation’s release. after releasing 1989 she of course went on tour with the 1989 tour and that went until december 2015. snapchatgate didn’t happen until july 2016. after that she had appearances at Formula 1 in Austin in october, the 2016 CMAs, and she release i don’t want to live forever with zayn in december 2016 with the music video released in january 2017 and had a pre super bowl concert in february. she erased everything from her instagram in august 2017, reputation was announced that august, and then her next public appearance was SNL on in november 2017.

i don’t get the sense she was professionally cancelled. one example, she signed her multi year promo deal with at&t in october 2016, which would have been after snapchatgate. that’s a huge deal. her deal with keds shoes did end with 2016 but i think part of that is likely aligned with taylor’s desire at the time to evolve her image. keds as very red era and it worked with 1989 era but, i think 2016 was a logical stopping point.

i think the reason why it felt like she disappeared is that she was active on social media so much in the years before snapchatgate, but then she really dropped a bunch of that so it felt like it was drastically less so suddenly. but taylor has really pared down her social media presence in recent years as well so, im not sure if she was similarly quiet these days if people would even notice.

PLEASE share your midnights Matty softlaunch theory, it’s such an odd and (to me at least lol) fascinating album

ok so. im going to go into insane detail track by track, but i think midnights makes sense (almost) if we read it as a journey through deciding to leave joe and we read mastermind as being a matty song — so the album is mostly her wondering if this thing she feels with matty is real or in her head, and then wondering, if it is real, if it’s worth it to make the jump. and i think she was ready to do it, and midnights would’ve been basically the matty “announcement,” but then she and joe made up and the 3am tracks are kind of damage control to confuse the narrative and make it less obvious. but we have to do a bit of digging. so let’s dive in.

(obvi we don’t know what happened for real. but it’s just fun to speculate!!!)

we open with lavender haze. and here we see taylor desperate to stay in the happy, peaceful relationship she’s in — she doesn’t WANT to get married, she doesn’t WANT to be talked about, she doesn’t WANT anything more. she just wants this. it’s enough for her. …or is it?

because immediately, we move to maroon. we go from a pastel purple color to various shades of red, changing the image and flipping back through memories. and these memories call back to a lot of 1989 era imagery — we get the wine stain from clean, the rosy cheeks from wildest dreams, new york… that’s a real fucking legacy to leave. something triggered this little trip down memory lane. maybe they hung out, or someone said something, who knows. but i think this is where the cracks in the lavender haze begin.

and so after all that she takes us to anti-hero. it’s me, hi, i’m the problem. i think this is probably the precursor to guilty as sin? — it’s saying, oh no. i’m the problem, fantasizing about my ex again (i dream of cracking locks, throwing my life to the wolves/i wake up screaming from dreaming) and acknowledges that joe is going to leave her when he finds out (one day i‘ll watch as you’re leaving)

but she can’t stop. the fantasy continues to grow in snow on the beach. this song is filled a bunch of space/sky imagery — “a few moons ago,” “stars by the pocketful,” “your eyes are flying saucers from another planet.” let’s keep track of that imagery. (we’ll return to the all space stuff in a big way in down bad, but don’t worry, it’ll reappear on midnights.)

and then there’s the realization of you’re on your own kid. that’s right — you’re on your own, and you always have been. i think this is her deciding to separate her sense of identity from joe. and the first verse brings up a lot of images we see come back on ttpd: “summer went away, still the yearning stays” -> “another summer/rolling thunder/he don’t understand me” and “it’s okay we’re the best of friends” -> “but tell me who else is gonna know you?” and “you’re smoking with your boys” -> “you needed drugs more.” it’s tempting to interpret the first verse as a retrospective on her teenage years, but it could just as easily be about falling for matty while they were “just friends” and she was still with joe. but i think in yoyok she’s still trying to convince herself it’s not real: “just to learn that you never cared.” matty doesn’t want her, she thinks. but she has her songs. maybe that’s all she ever needed?

this triggers an even larger dive into the past: midnight rain. now she’s wondering if the reason she’s so resistant to marry joe is just a repeat of old patterns, so she dives into the past looking for answers. i maintain that midnight rain is about the muse of debut and i think it’s her looking over her own past and trying to make sense of what’s happening now. am i the problem? was i always the problem? am i incapable of marriage or is it just with this guy?

so now she has to know. she has to get answers. is this fantasy about matty her just replaying old patterns of leaving when things get serious? or is this thing she feels with matty something real? basically, can i ask you a question…? we don’t even need to dive any deeper into the 1989 era of it all. this song is pretty obvious. note that we return to the space imagery though: “does it feel like everything is just like second best after that meteor strike?”

i don’t feel like talking about vigilante shit because it’s a bad song but suffice to say i think it’s just her being admitting she’s okay sometimes being the villain. other than that it’s not really relevant to the matty narrative.

so then we get bejeweled. which was strange when it came out and hasn’t gotten less strange, but it’s kind of another step in deciding to leave joe behind. she can’t marry him, because she’s not sure matty isn’t actually the one for her. “when i meet the band, they ask do you have a man, i can still say i don’t.” is the band… perhaps… the 1975? and this is when she leaves. “what’s a girl gonna do? a diamond’s gotta shine.” she sets herself free. you can try to change her mind, but you can’t. she polished up real nice.

and then we get labyrinth. which to me only makes sense as a post-joe song. “it only hurts this much right now.” “i’ll be getting over you my whole life.” “break up break free break through break down.” but what saves her? the person who comes in right at the last second: matty. he turns the plane around. remember all the space imagery? my flight was awful thanks for asking? well, here he is. uh oh, i’m falling in love again.

and actually… she loves it. it feels like karma. (or maybe destiny.) for all her work, all her struggle, all her pain, she gets the guy in the end: the years of pining and coded songs all add up to this.

but she can’t hate joe. she could never hate him. she might have wanted to leave, but it wasn’t because he treated her badly. he never wanted anything from her. just sweet nothing. i don’t think sweet nothing is a breakup song; it was probably even written as a love song. but its placement on the tracklist makes it feel like a goodbye. “they said the end is coming,” she says. but she needed someone who saw her that way. it’s an i will always love you song. it’s a thank you.

and so we close: mastermind. the planets and all the stars aligned from snow on the beach and question. we’re up in space now. she’s been planting these seeds since back in 2014… and now she has him. matty. she did it. all the wisest women had to do it this way. doesn’t that sound like fucking politics and gender roles? the liquor in the cocktails that she’s always drunk on when she’s around him? but he knew the entire time. she’s a mastermind.

okay so that’s the standard edition. the bonus track being hits different makes sense if it’s the joe breakup — “it hits different this time.” she’s left people before, but never like this. she’s SAD! she’s waiting for his key in the door but it never comes. she might have been the one that left, but it still hurt like never before.

but the 3am tracks are the last bit of the puzzle. and here’s where i think we can take taylor’s word for them as sort of “vault tracks” because they don’t fit in the narrative of midnights, but they tell a story in themselves. and that story is of her and joe getting back together after all this.

the first one she tacks on is the great war, a song about making up after a fight. so she puts that one to first, to reassure that they actually made it through. then i think we get the “cutting room floor” tracks — that is, they’re out of order but all part of the larger story. we get another heartwrenching goodbye in bigger than the whole sky, a return to the delusional lavender haze and staring at the ceiling in paris, a song about cheating in high infidelity. all thematically relevant, but not perfectly fitting into the narrative of the original record.

then we get glitch, which imo is also a matty song. “depending on what kind of situationship im in” read: if joe and i are off or on. “2190 days of our love blackout” read: six years since the 1989 era where they dated originally. “nights are so starry” brings us back to the space imagery, the glitch video on spotify glitching to the 1989 tv of wildest dreams… “it must be counterfeit” will come back too, in loml when she says “something counterfeit is dead.” but here… it’s only getting started.

would’ve could’ve should’ve again sees her examining her patterns with toxic men, and begins a lot of the religious theming we’ll see return on ttpd. and then we close with dear reader, a song about self-loathing, and begging the listener not to take her advice because she’s not really a good person. she admits it: she cheats, she lies, joe has left her alone in the house (not a home, cause nobody’s there.) “you should find another guiding light,” she tells us. but she shines so bright…

anyway yeah. that’s my extended theory. i think it was supposed to be the goodbye to joe and mastermind was introducing matty, but then when they patched it up, the narrative changed and 3am tracks got added on and changed the direction. (it makes sense if those tracks were added on late, since they weren’t available physically for a long time after the record was released. hits different, the song about breaking up with a long term partner… was.) we could deep dive into every song and analyze the lyrical parallels with 1989, folkmore, and ttpd too (don’t get me started on the 1 and cardigan) but we’ll save that for another time.

and of course, we all know what happened next. but we wouldn’t be here without the chaos that was midnights. without it, we might never have gotten an answer to that one, burning question…?

Alsoooooo…I am so sorry for dropping off the face of the earth. I had mentioned only a couple of times that I was dealing with some health issues, but I never went into full detail, so I’m sure it looked odd when I just disappeared. 2023 was really hard year, and I stepped away from all social media except for my instagram for quite some time…but I’m really really excited to be back here and feeling more like Petals again. I missed everyone, and even in the year or so away, I knew eventually I would come back. I just didn’t want anyone to worry if I told them what was going on, so I figured a cold cut was easiest ♥️

Short story:

I was very ill, but I’m feeling SO much better!

Long Story:

Essentially, I had just moved back to Florida after being gone for four years in Arizona. When my old doctor in Florida saw me, they decided that the plaquinil treatments that I have been taking for my chronic illness for the last few years in Arizona had not been working. They decided to put me on this drug called methotrexate. It was chemotherapy in pill form, low dose, and it’s commonly used for people who have rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. My genetics love me so I have both RA and Lupus. So they thought it was a perfect match for me. It’s rare for people to have a super bad reaction to it, usually just fatigue and hair loss, but of course I managed to have like the worst reaction of all.

Due to multiple side effects, I ended up bed bound within a few days of starting my daily doses. During this time I could barely sit up and eat a meal. My mental health was plummeting anytime I allowed myself to have my phone in bed. I knew I had to do something else, before I totally crashed off the deep end. I would go on and see all my friends at Taylor’s era tour, and I’d had to sell my tickets. I was missing birthdays, movies, long planned trips with friends. I was SO lost in a way I can’t even begin to describe.

Even though my wonderful parents moved me in with them and got me a second opinion, by the time the new doctor got me off of the methotrexate and onto a new drug, it took another few months for my body to complete expel it from my system. So I was down for the count from March to October.

Thankfully, I’m feeling SOOO much better now and have a wonderful doctor who listens to me and never tells me my feelings aren’t valid. Once I had a better grasp mentally and physically, and I felt okay enough to start writing and reading and reviewing again, I decided to return to social media. Im actually super excited because I start physical therapy this week, which is a huge step, and I no longer need to use FMLA every week at work. Yay!

Ok ill admit I don't know as much about swiftgron as I know about kaylor, buuuut from what I've learned plus my own interpretations of the songs- here's what I'm thinking with 1989 (let people have fun and listen to the songs how we want, if you don't like that just scroll away)

I saw someone explain that most of the love songs are kaylor, sadder songs are swiftgron (and this love thats is a swiftgron song). And I think I agree there. I think this album was trying to moving on from Dianna and finding karlie, to put it simply at least

So song wise- there's only a few songs I wanna directly talk about rn. Those being the vaults and a couple others

I want to talk about style first. This one is both ships for me. I think it was written with Dianna in mind. I think thay song was first sung and created because of her. But- I think that it became about karlie. From the original VS Style performance to the Eras Style performance, I think taylor has shifted the song to be more about karlie. So written about Dianna, performed about karlie

Next is the vaults-

Slut! is kaylor. That's how I see that one. "If I'm all dressed up, they might as well be looking at us" feels like how eyes were on karlie and taylor everytime they were together. From the bff vogue video to Victoria's secret shows to kissgate. They were huge in the media back during 1989. Plus rhe feelings I get in this song are like- "for once I don't care about whay they say for once it's all worth it just to be with you" and thay falls in with a lot of kaylor songs we have

Say don't go to me feels more blurry to me im not sure on the full meaning yet. But "walk away and leave me bleeding" plus the knife mention made me think of the "remember those days" tweet. I also feel like this one could be the sadder version of how you get the girl. Like say don't go is what happened, hygtg is what tay wished happened instead or what she wished would happen. So it's like I wish you would and all you had to do was stay. Those songs all feel very very connected to me

Now that we don't talk- still working on this interpretation too. But I've seen people saying it has falling for your best friend vibes, which ofc is Kaylor. But it feels too break up like for kaylor in this era so I'm not sure

When they will get married I have no inkling and I don’t even feel like speculating cuz of all those gross pregnancy/marriage rumours going around 🤢 I think they’ll get married cuz:

their careers are such that they’re both lifting the other up when they show up for games/concerts, there is no conflict of interest (ie no competition) cuz of the vastly different fields they’re in. Also, he was more established than joe at the start of their r/ship which makes for a very rosy picturesque love story image which at least some part of Taylor desires (based on her interviews, the fearless/speak now eras) but she’s also become quite jaded (as per ttpd) so maybe she thinks this is the closest she’s going to get to it

i also think she’s in no rush to leave a r/ship this comfortable after her last 2 emotionally complex ones. Not saying this is good or bad of her; I do understand why she would want to take it easy now (and possibly forever) but given how little they seem to have in common, I don’t think she can find this r/ship as emotionally fulfilling as she would want with a life partner, so I don’t see them sticking it out forever. Ofc I could be wrong and maybe she’s changed, but based on her track record travis does not seem the type of person Taylor Swift would want to spend the rest of her life with (girlie was cringing so hard in the viva las vegas clip)

Possible triggers for the breakup and why:

She finds someone else to obsess over and for some weird reason…she suddenly realises what a temper travis has? And how aggressive he is?? Cue the breakup songs/album, swifties dig up That Clip and go omggg how did we not see this he was abusing mother 😢😢, rinse and repeat until she (hopefully) finds some self-worth NOT tied to a man

travis’ team starts losing the Super Bowl/not doing all that well in other competitions. I think the main reason swiftie are kind of sweeping his messed up tweets and behaviour under the rug is cuz they won. But what abt if/when they stop winning? All that’s left is a hot-tempered football player who isn’t even an “all-star” (am I using that term correctly?) and she’s not going to like being associated with that/have that tarnish her brand. I find it so absurdly hilarious but she would rather be seen as problematic (re: M*tty) than unsuccessful, so she’d prob drop him if this happened

imgonnagetyouback is a fun pop song (that my sister thinks was supposed to be on the standard track list but got bumped when olivia rodrigo released get him back! and honest i see it) that details swift seeing her ex again and is so caught up in overwhelming emotions that she, unsure how she wants to, will get them back.

in all honesty is isn’t a favorite track of mine. it’s catchy but its low on my song rankings. though i do think it’s different from rodrigo’s song besides sound wise. to me rodrigo’s song sounds more angry and towards a more definitive end of a relationship but you still want them because you miss X Y or Z. her’s feels more angry and punchy. while swifts feels like something that has been done before and she is sure will happen again. she’s in a sorta manic episode and isn’t over this guy at all but is still so mad at them but also still wants them.

with swift we hear her talk about how she’s lied to her friends about not wanting him, physically sees him and automatically assumes he still wants her and thinks he’s just playing hard to get, and swears she’s not leaving without him even if it’s handcuffed together because they got into a fight. this feels like a callback to several particular events, and even reminds me of the betty speech from MetLife Night 1 where betty’s friends say “Don't talk to him. Remember what he did!”. this might be a made up event in the song but there definitely feels like weight behind each back and forth decision with taylor. it feels like maybe her and this partner have done this before where they fight and get back together.

also with lines like “did your research/you knew the price going in” feels like both a call to taylor’s relationship with fame as well as “you know i don’t leave without a fight!”

but earlier today i posted a video i saw on tiktok of a person discussing how ttpd will be an important landmark in swift’s career. in it the poster says the album is about taylor’s six year relationship ending and how the media will react. i very much so enjoy this take as they very clearly said 1-2 songs are about m*tty he*ly at most and that any song people think is about him is actually more of a way for her to discuss her relationship to fame. i really like this read as several songs people connect to m*tty do overall comment on swift’s career as a whole (bdilh, fots, gas?, icfh((nric)), etc.). which is something people have been already digesting and discussing with the album.

i bring this up because this song and a lot of anthology songs do have a conversation around her fame and that as a third person in her relationships. this is something she also touched on midnights and plenty of other albums. this song swift references aspects of her fame, “bygones will be bygone eras fadin’ into gray” and “pick your poison babe/im poison either way”, and how that has affected them in the past. but even with that history and knowledge going on swift still says that she can feel that their both still invested, they’re both still ready to restart everything like janet from the good place and pretend nothing happened, but just like janet things linger and affect long term. this ties into loml and how both parties are willing to go back into the destructive fire of their love because they know it and still feel something is there.

overall the song is still in my bottom ranked songs but i do think it shows us an interesting side of swift and allows us to see her in a very human and relatable/messy way. it’s fun for the girlies (nongendered) who like it and i respect that.

I am feeling so anxious about going to see the Eras Tour movie

Regardless about how you feel about TSwift I feel like this is applicable to all future prerecorded concerts (since I feel like this might become a trend)

I know a lot of people can’t afford to go to concerts so this is for them

But I CHOOSE not to go to concerts because they’re often too overstimulating for me. They can be so loud and there are so many people and no one cares about personal space so people are TOUCHING, and people are screaming along, which is fine!!! I want people to enjoy their concert experience!!! But that’s why after a few when I was younger I decided for me, sacrificing my mental health wasn’t worth it.

I want to believe that pre recorded concerts are for people like me too. Sometime I wish I was able to go, but I know it’s not accessible for me. So I think seeing it in the theatre where it’s quieter and takes a lot of the overwhelming variables OUT of the concert going experience makes them a good alternative.

The Eras Tour movie comes out next weekend. I’m going with my parents and we bought not cheap, IMAX, NON-REFUNDABLE tickets. My dad really likes Taylor swift as a performer, I like her stuff, and my mom took my sister to the actual concert itself and thought it would be neat to see it again.

But everyone online is talking how they plan to be screaming their heart out, dancing, and doing all the normal concert things. When someone pointed out that that wasn’t the experience they wanted going to the theatre, someone replied with “wait till it’s in streaming then. This is for the true swifties and Taylor said we could.”

And it makes me upset. Because I don’t want to have to wait for it to go to streaming. I want to be able to have the experience of seeing it on the big screen. And I’m mad that that’s probably going to be taken away from me because people are so focused on their own experience they don’t think about others. I’m sad that I probably won’t be able to sit through all three hours of it, and won’t be able to get my money back because other people decided the movie theatre was a concert venue.

I don’t know. Maybe I’m being unreasonable. im not trying to take away from anyone’s joy. I’m not trying to deprive anyone of an experience. I think I’m just frustrated that things that I feel like IM not allowed to also have an experience that is safe for me, and people like me, because instead of thinking about others with different needs, people’s response is “wait till you can do it at home.” Which feels a lot like “disabled people shouldn’t leave the house.”

If you have thoughts I genuinely would like to know what other people think. Maybe I’m being dramatic and I’d like to hear other peoples point of view.
