How I discovered a new (to me) ballet! This is a long post...so if you read to the end, I know you're a fan! A few nights ago, I was watching Frederick Wiseman’s documentary BALLET, a behind-the-scenes look at ABT circa 1992. As an aside, Wiseman docs are notoriously hard to find. Streaming access was limited for a long time, but now available via Kanopy with a library card...)
BALLET is nearly three hours long and filled with gems, especially the rehearsals. The dancing is fantastic. Another great Wiseman doc is LA DANSE about the Paris Opera Ballet. Apparently, Wiseman is a ballet fan.
One of my favorite moments is Irina Koplakova coaching Susan Jaffe as Nikiya in La Bayadere. Another is the ABT tour of Europe. We see snippets of  two ballets performed on an outdoor stage in Athens near the Acropolis (!!) One ballet I was not familiar with -- and I was blown away. I went down a rabbit hole and discovered that it’s the Bruch Violin Concerto No 1 choreographed by Clark Tippet. A little more research lead me to discover the ballet’s tragic backstory. Tippet was an ABT Principal turning towards choreography. The Bruch piece was his second ballet and it’s utterly gorgeous. It debuted in 1988 to rave reviews. Ann Kisselgoff from the NY Times described it as, “downright terrific.” I agree!  Tragically, Tippet died in 1992 of AIDS at the age of 37.  I cannot help but think of the ballets not created because of this early death. And the millions of other lives cut short in their prime. The death toll in the 80′s and 90′s...utterly heartbreaking.  The first video is a longer video of the ballet. The second movement (deep blue/purple costumes) is what grabbed by attention. The adagio is masterful! Below is shorter clip of ABT performing the Bruch Violin Concerto No1 with Ethan Stieffel and Ashley Tuttle. It gives you a snapshot of the energy and exuberance of Tippet’s choreography perfermed by a top notch company.

The Great British Bake Off‘s executive producer has said that people were justified in criticizing Season 13 of the hit competition series.
Richard McKerrow, Chief Executive of Bake Off producer Love Productions, told The Media Podcast that the production team is working to put things right for Season 14, which shoots in April.
“I’d be the first to hold up our hands and say that I feel that the last series was not our strongest,” McKerrow said. “You’ve got to take a look at it and go, ‘Shit, [are] the challenges too complicated?’ We’re looking very, very, very hard at making sure that it’s as good a series as it can be.”

chapter 10 on ao3
1985, London. The wizarding queer art scene revolves around a gallery called the Bent, where conceptual artist Remus Lupin and photographer Sirius Black exhibit their works, and a club called the Bush, where they spend time with Jane and Lily Potter, who work at a nearby heath clinic. Although war with Voldemort was averted, the wizarding world is still simmering with tension. In the face of increasing intolerance and calls for censorship, Remus’ art takes a riskier, more political turn, and he must figure out how to balance self-expression and safety. Also, he might be falling in love with his best friend.
Author's notes on ch. 10:
Part of this chapter deals with legal action being taken against Benjy Fenwick’s porn shop. This was something that really happened in the period, not just with porn shops but queer bookstores more generally. Perhaps the most famous instance of this in Britain was “Operation Tiger.” In 1984, Customs raided Gay’s the Word, a queer bookshop in Bloomsbury founded in 1979. They seized a substantial amount of stock and charged them with importing indecent materials. Graham McKerrow, the co-founder of the London newspaper Capital Gay and a coordinator of the shop’s defense fund, describes what happened next:
“Over the two years following Operation Tiger, Customs detained thousands of volumes of hundreds of queer titles – newspapers, magazines, history, biography, autobiography, politics, sociology, humour, books for young people, health guides, sex guides, counselling guides, books about Aids, contemporary fiction, erotic fiction, drama and poetry – imported mostly from the US and destined for queer, radical and left-wing bookshops, mail order businesses, the Gay Christian Movement and the London International Feminist Book Fair. Customs staff were seizing books and newspapers from the port of Dover on the south coast to Prestwick airport in Scotland. Essentially Gay, a mail order service, was put out of business by Customs’ seizure of its books. None of the other businesses went to court to challenge the seizure notices because they couldn’t afford to, or they had no faith that the courts would give them a fair hearing. Only Gay’s the Word decided it would launch a campaign and ask for donations so it could fight for the right to import books. […]
"When the bookshop declared it would raise the money, go to court and campaign to have Customs’ extensive powers of search and seizure brought into line with police powers, which are supervised by the courts, Customs responded by bringing exactly 100 charges against the nine staff and volunteer directors alleging that they had conspired to import indecent or obscene material, and carrying a penalty of up to life in prison and fines. […]
"The defence campaign hired two co-ordinators, of which I was one, to intensify and expand the campaign but suddenly in June, following a judgment by the European court about the importation of sex dolls and a change of the minister responsible for Customs and Excise, the charges were dropped and 123 titles were returned to Gay’s the Word, and 19 titles that Customs claimed were obscene were sent back to the supplier in the US. Copies of The Joy of Gay Sex were returned to the Gay Christian Movement. None of the books seized from Gay’s the Word was destroyed, no-one was fined or jailed, but there was no compensation either and Customs retains to this day the right to enter any building by force and search and seize any goods liable to forfeiture.”

Your two booksellers counting down the hours until Hallowe’en at The Paper Hound? Or a death-defying Elizabethan printer’s mark, taken from Printers’ & Publishers’ Devices in England & Scotland 1485-1640 (McKerrow, 1949)?
 Well today, let’s say both.

It’s time for another 1980s feature from director Dario Argento with a return to the Giallo sub-genre. The film is Tenebrae – or Tenebre (original title) or Ténèbres (French) – and features Anthony Franciosa, John Saxon, and Daria Nicolodi. Argento was inspired by a series of incidents that saw an obsessed fan telephone the director to criticize him for the damaging psychological effects of his previous work. The telephone calls culminated in death threats towards Argento, who channeled the experience into the writing of Tenebrae with a double helix of a plot.
At the time of this writing, Tenebrae is available to stream from Wicked Horror TV, Shudder, Kanopy, and Plex. It is also available on Blu-Ray and 4K Ultra HD from Synapse Films.
This is the Decades of Horror Grue Crews’ xth encounter with Argento. Here are their other Argento episodes if you care to check them out.

Gay Muslims (2005) was a Channel 4 documentary directed by Cara Lavan. It was first aired in Channel 4 & Documentary TV. The film featured faithful British homosexual muslims for the first time. The documentary was the first attempt to examine Islam & Homosexuality together, and raising awareness for gay muslims in Britain.
The documentary was about 5 homosexual muslims living in the UK. 4 interviewees of the film didn't show their face, except gay muslim activist Adnan Ali. They challenged the heteronormative worldview within Islamic/Muslim world and tried to reconcile Islam with their sexuality. It is usually a stark choice between suppressing homosexual desires & leading an undercover double life, coming out, losing the respect and support of family and communities.
Interviewees spoke about their commitment to or belief in Islam. Interviewees shared about their ostracism within their family & muslim communities. Shakir & his parents found it easier to accept lesbianism than gay men's homosexuality. Farah decided to go back into the closet, to lie about her sexuality to ease the tension in her conservative religious family.
Adnan Ali is a gay muslim activist, who daringly showed his face. Adnan is a member of Imaan - Europe's largest LGBTQ+ muslim charity.
Criticism and controversy:
Film was highly criticized by many muslims for its controversial, taboo subject.Ex-gay muslims from StraightWay Foundation (a British org. that provide conversion therapy for LGBTQ muslims) criticized this film for featuring Pro-gay muslim things.Ex-gay muslims or conservative muslims also said in their statement that '' There is no such thing like sexual orientation.Nobody is born as gay or lesbian ''

📍Northwest Trading Company
…. 327 Hwy 17, McKerrow, ON
This intersection with the Northwest Trading Company, Tim Hortons and Wendy’s has been a must stop for every roadtrip dating back to when my kids were small ….
First stopping here with my parents as we headed back to Toronto, the kids loved looking at the store and getting an ice cream. We’d take a washroom break, order some coffee and donuts and be on our way.
Flash forward to recent years and this place has now become my “must stop” break place. I always enjoy a walk around the Trading Post and a large coffee before hitting the road again. 🚙 …. Next time you’re passing by make sure to stop in and grab an ice cream cone !!!!
Great ice cream...dare you to get the triple scoop!
Nice staff, unique gifts, good fudge, clean bathrooms!
If you are travelling highway 17, stop here. #happytravels

Reflection paper

#REFLECTION PAPER HOW TO#
There is no doubt that an important ingredient of any action taken in the area of health care is mostly the result of tradition transferred from the professor to the student, generation after generation, and of the "school" that imparted the training, rather than of the reliable scientific evidence behind. To reflect (from reflection) means to "think attentively and carefully on something." In that sense, an article for reflection shall essentially contain the result of a thinking and reflection process by the authors on a particular topic, rather than the result of a compilation of other people's thoughts and opinions, regardless of whether such compilation on some specific matter may be appropriate for argument sake. According to the Diccionario de la Lengua Española 4 (Spanish Language Dictionary), articles for reflection are different. However, articles for reflection are different. 3 These tools have been designed for observational and diagnostic trials, for clinical essays, systematic reviews, and qualitative research, inter alia. The so-called Enhancing the Quality and Transparency Of health Research Network initiative provides statements and tools to facilitate the presentation of complete and useful manuscripts for users of scientific evidence. 2 There are multiple strategies to improve the completeness of published medical research. It has been shown that part of the problems with scientific research, such as lack of reproducibility or uselessness, are due to inappropriate reporting. Nobody expects flowers, or eloquence, or literary ornaments in a research article." 1 Writing scientific papers requires a general standard as stated by RB McKerrow: "Present your facts as simply as possible, even boldly. Very often, the most knowledgeable and experienced people on a particular subject lack the training and the skills to write a good scientific article, as in addition to being an expert on the topic, a set of skills are required, including the ability to conduct an adequate search for scientific information, timely processing of the information using a reference manager, conduct at least at a basic level, a critical reading of such information, knowing and using the standards for completeness established based on the type of scientific article to be published, and finally, proficiency in writing-which is not an easy task.
#REFLECTION PAPER HOW TO#
Writing for publication purposes is a responsibility that goes beyond knowing how to correctly capture words on a piece of paper.
