my friends sorta bailed on me for our planned may vacation, or like, not bailed per se, but it was supposed to be a longer trip, and now it turned into an extended long weekend - which is fine! it's still gonna be a lot of fun

but i have all this vacation time i have to use up before the end of July or I lose it - which is such a whiny privileged problem ik - but it's like....i dont HAVE any other nearby friends.....sitting around in my apartment for a day or two is nice, but a whole week? it'll probably just be really depressing??? i'll sleep to much and be a miserable wretch..... but obvs i dont want to NOT use that PTO that i am so lucky to have with this current job (yay unions)

also like i get that i'm not everyone's priority and they used most of their pto for trips with family and significant others....but im just... i saved it for you... i am too pathetic sad bad to have any other friends apparently....

i think my biggest problem w/ rwby @ this point is how much they love shock value and making their characters suffer for entertainment. Ever since the end of volume 8 there’s been an air of “you’ll never guess what happens next!!” before the result being death, destruction, sadness, etc.

They played the Everything is Horrible card to wrap up volume 3 and it almost feels like theyve been trying to recapture that “woah what the hell???” factor ever since.

the volume 8 ending marked a really dark turn for rwby as a show, with scenes so graphic and upsetting that you can feel the grins on the writer’s faces when they told themselves “This is a game changer, no one will EVER expect this.” even though many of the darker themes were already explored much more tactfully in v3.

but the result is much more damning, because now, nothing is shocking. It’s the factor that made most people stop reading attack on titan. if ANYTHING is fair game, no matter how dark, then why get invested in any of it??? Hell, they made bumbleby canon after years of baiting, doubling back, yearning, etc, and it didnt even end up being the climax of the episode!!! (no really! that episode kept going after the happiest scene all season).

Now like, volume 9 has been arguably going better than its predecessors in terms of character writing, but it’s also really awkward to watch them stumble and trip over the decisions they made for the volume 8 ending. There’s a deep deep feeling that if the team just talked to each other for more than 5 minutes, none of these events would be taking place. It’s narrative tension in such a bland form. the biggest relief in the entire season was an extended scene where blake and yang FINALLY talk about their feelings. after AN ENDLESS SUPPLY of skirting around their issues, and unfortunately, that episode ended, and we had plenty more show afterwards.

This latest episode was a tough sell for me. i already don’t exactly trust RT to handle “sensitive/distressing themes”, and to that end i think that Ruby’s “decision” in this episode could’ve used much more sensitive & informed lead-in. Also, straight up there are some really dark things in this episode ASIDE from that, that I swear to god, someone was smiling over in the writer’s room.

SPOILERS: you can try to make Neo a sympathetic villain, or you can have her crush a defenseless mouse to death under her heel, but you can’t do both, dude. Ya just can’t.

END SPOILERS: overall, i think im fine w/ this season. it’s overall decent and is trying it’s best to handwave away all the bad decisions made in previous seasons. That method CAN work if it’s in the interest of making a more thematically interesting show & learning from your past mistakes, but instead it feels like they’re simply running from tragedy to tragedy, with glimpses of happiness that are starting to feel more like a trick they can pull out whenever they want to lure you into a false sense of security. Characters being happy is now a surefire sign that there’s going to be a character death soon.

SPOILERS AGAIN SORRY THIS IS DISORGANIZED: my friend hannah pointed out that one of the most egregious parts of this episode is that neo didnt know most of the people she was puppeting around to psychologically torture Ruby. Neo’s actions were supposed to convince Ruby that all these deaths were her fault, but because there’s VERY few characters that fit that bill, you end up with the issue of many characters being folks Neo shouldn’t even know the status of (unless she can suddenly read minds)

Leo, the headmaster of mistral died while ruby & friends were off screen, and was DIRECTLY killed by Salem without Ruby’s involvement.

Ozpin and Pyrrha were killed by Cinder, while Neo was busy careening into the abyss on her umbrella, implying in that in their brief time together, Cinder explained everyone who died who had a connection to Ruby. Neo clearly guesses that penny is dead in the first place, meaning that her even KNOWING about Leo is completely unexplainable. Neo also shouldnt have known that Ironwood was dead, and on top of all else, why does she think that Ruby would blame herself for clover???? methinks the writers just wanted to fill seats in neo’s scary fucked up dining room. wacky decision.

Or maybe it isnt, because the first thing i thought was: “Wow thats so scary what the fuck”

which again points a big neon arrow to the writing issues of current rwby: It was done to be shocking even though it doesn’t make sense.

I have a hard time believing any of the events of this episode are ones they’ll stick with. All of the characters who “died” in this episode can plausibly come back in some way shape or form, so I guess now its time to just wait n see what happens.

currently watching: I just watched the latest Game Changer but actually I find myself between TV shows (or between seasons of TV shows) at the moment. I do keep getting recommended The Gilded Age so I may check that out, but honestly due to my parents being hardline "television rots your brain" people combined with the fact that I watch a 3-5 hour actual play show once a week and a have been making a very successful concerted effort to read more this year I just haven't had the time.

currently obsessed with: blood oranges; time-loop media. Also I did really love the first Dungeon Meshi collection but the library is taking its sweet time in delivering me the second so The Obsession has not yet set in fully.

Rex was walking up the ramp of the Marauder with his helmet tucked under his arm when he saw Tech coming towards him. For a moment, the former clone captain was surprised, because it looked like Tech was limping. But then Rex saw the reason. A little girl with happily bobbing dark curls was clinging to his leg, giggling.

Rex grinned.

"That must be Amy," he said, amused.

Tech grinned and greeted him with a nod. Finally, he looked down at Amy and said, "Hey spider monkey, maybe let go of Daddy's leg for a moment and say hello to Uncle Rex?"

"Rrrrrrrrex," Amy rolled the name off her tongue, she did things like that a lot lately, played with emphasizing and pronouncing words.

Rex raised his eyebrows in amusement. When the little girl turned to him, he knelt down and smiled at her.

"Hi Amy."

She waved at him with a grin, then looked up at her father.

Tech said, "It's okay, Rex is one of my brothers"

"Another uncle," she said, looking at Rex from a distance first, scrutinizing.

"That's right, little mouse," the former clone captain said, amused.

Unabashed, Amy eyed the newcomer and said, "You look like my Uncle Echo."

Slowly the little girl walked up to Rex until she was standing right in front of him, then she eyed him again, this time up close.

"Your hair is all light," she noted.

"It's called blonde, Amy," Tech explained softly.

"Blonde," she repeated thoughtfully.

She slowly reached out to touch Rex's head, very slowly, watching him as she did so, as if expecting him to bite her at any moment. She touched the soft, cropped hair briefly, then withdrew her hand.

"Real soft!" she exclaimed, running back to cling to Tech's leg again.

"Amy, I have to work in the engine room, you can't stay on my leg, honey."

Tech's daughter sighed theatrically and went back to Rex, who had just gotten back up.

"Will you play with me?" she asked, looking up at him expectantly.

Rex scratched the back of his head and laughed softly, "Sure, if your dad doesn't mind."

Tech said, "In fact, I'd be very grateful if you could keep her busy until her mom gets back. The work in the engine room needs to be done by tonight. Y/N should be back in an hour at the latest, I guess"

"Sure, no problem," Rex said, even though he wasn't at all sure what to do with the little girl. He didn't really have much experience with children.

Tech made his way to the engine room, and Amy continued to look up at Rex expectantly.

"What would you like to play?" he asked her with a smile.

Amy said eagerly, "We could play what Uncle Cross always plays with me."

Rex raised his eyebrows in surprise, "Crosshair plays with you?"

The girl nodded eagerly, grabbed his hand and pulled him down the ramp outside, several feet away from the Marauder.

"Where are you taking me?"

"To the playground."

"There's a playground here?"

Amy beamed at him, "Yes. Uncle Cross made it"

Rex said dryly, "I guess your Uncle Crosshair is good for many a surprise after all"

The Captain just couldn't picture the Sniper handling a child, but Amy was obviously quite fond of her Uncle Cross.

In fact, there was a playground. There were a few trees a bit off to the side, a makeshift swing hung from one of them, a small climbing frame was set up next to it, and a slide. All very carefully homemade from scrap parts. Rex was amazed and took a closer look. No sharp edges, no rust. Everything had been neatly and very conscientiously worked on. He nodded, Crosshair had really made an effort, he had to admit that.

At Amy's request, Rex carefully placed her on the swing and gently pushed her.

"So, what do your other uncles do?" asked Rex curiously.

Amy eagerly began to tell, "Uncle Wrekah sometimes plays with Mimi and Lula with me, our stuffed animals and I can ride on his shoulders, and then I'm the biggest person in the galaxy! Uncle Echo taught me how to draw and read the star chart. Uncle Huntah sometimes goes with me to watch animals and pick berries and flowers, for Mommy."

Rex laughed softly, the idea of Clone Force 99 taking care of a toddler was cute and funny. Especially Crosshair, was a surprise to Rex.

"You sure talk a lot for your age, don't you? That's pretty amazing"

"I'm almost three!" exclaimed Amy, indignantly.

"That's very young," Rex remarked, "But you definitely are your father's daughter."

Amy seemed to be thinking, not sure if Rex had just said something good or bad there. She looked at him over her small shoulder and said, "Daddy is the best! He knows everything and can fix anything!"

Rex nodded and said in agreement, "That's right, your father is a very capable man"

"Mommy is great too" she said thoughtfully "She makes really great food, knows great stories, and she makes Daddy very happy"

Rex laughed softly again and said, "Yes, I'm sure she does, she's a great woman"

"Hey spider monkey"

Amy's gaze shot forward in the direction of the voice. Crosshair had emerged from between the trees. She said hastily, "Stop the swing! Stop the swing!"

Rex did as he was told, and before he could reach for her, Amy jumped down and ran toward her uncle. She jumped on one of the Sniper's long legs and began to climb up. Crosshair watched her with amusement as she climbed, holding onto his armor. He remained alert and ready to grab her should she slip, but she made it up to his chest. Only now, he wrapped an arm around her small body to hold her in place.

"You're getting better at this," he said with a smirk.

Amy beamed proudly at him.

"Uncle Rex is visiting. I showed him my playground"

"Well, well, well," Crosshair said, nodding at the clone captain, "Rex."

"Crosshair," the latter returned the greeting, "I heard you two get along pretty nicely"

Crosshair looked him dead in the eye and said snarling, "Well, that's pretty easy, I'll just give her what none of us ever had"

Rex asked, "What would that be?"

"Someone who cares"

Before Rex could say something about that, a noise distracted them all.

The two men and Amy looked up as an alien ship approached the Marauder and landed more or less nearby.

"Are you expecting visitors?" asked Rex.

Crosshair, who had been frowning critically, shook his head and said, "No, not that I know of. I don't know that ship. I should go back and see if everything is all right. You stay in cover with Amy, just in case."

But when Crosshair tried to hand Amy off to Rex, she clung to the sniper with all her strength.

"No, I want to go with you!"

"Amy, this could be dangerous, it's better if you stay here with Rex," Crosshair said surprisingly patiently.

"Then you'll have to watch out for me! I don't even know Rex! I want to stay with you!"

Rex didn't blame the little girl, she was right, she didn't know him at all.

"I'll go see," the clone captain offered, "You stay here with Amy. I'll come get you when I know the coast is clear."

Crosshair sighs but nods.

"Be careful," he growls.

Rex runs off and Crosshair looks at Amy, her little face all worried and her little fingers clamped around the edges of the shoulder plates of his armor.

"But this is cheating," Tobi exclaims in his usual whiny voice that grates on everyone's nerves. Not yours, though. You're not sure if you're the only person who understands he acts irritating on purpose, but sometimes it sure feels that way. "If you're the one to blow yourself up, it doesn't count. [Y/n]-senpai is a cheater!"

"Nah," you say intelligently before you wag your finger at him. "I'll just make him want to kill me after I blow this up."

The mission has been dry. You and Tobi often resort to moronic methods of entertainment ― much to Deidara's chagrin, since he has to get paired with you both, and sometimes he thinks Pain is trying to drive him to murder-suicide ― and the latest is your ongoing bet. He wanted to see who can piss off Deidara the most until he caves in and throws explosives at one of you.

Maybe that doesn't seem all that fun, but boredom changes a person. Or maybe it doesn't, and you and Tobi are just irrational. Tobi's in the lead since he'd gotten the closest to getting Deidara to snap, but it is a bit unfair because he hasn't done anything in particular besides act like himself. So, you need a game changer.

Deidara barges inside the inn and his dismay at the prospect of being stuck somewhere with you both is clear on his face. "What are you morons doing?" he asks, though there is disinterest in his tone. He's probably looking for an excuse to lash out. It's the perfect opportunity.

You blink at him, trying to look all innocent (one of the things Tobi does that he hates) before you prepare to jab your finger in one of the clay figurines he left behind. Like a man possessed, Deidara lunges across the room and grabs it out of your grasp before you can cause an explosion so massive, everyone in the vicinity would die. He scowls. "What's wrong with you," he demands.

Is that it?

Several calculations run through your head as you come up with a response which is likely to get you in deep shit. "It's ugly," you say. "I don't wanna look at it."

Deidara appears to be restraining himself since he doesn't act on whatever violent urges he may be feeling at the moment. Instead he stares at you with freaky bloodshot bug eyes and an uncomfortable silence settles until he turns around to leave. He huffs, "Whatever. You don't even know what you're talking about."

You watch him stomp away and grind your teeth together and your nostrils flare. "Why does he never get mad?" Well, it's not that he doesn't get mad, but he appears to be more lenient on you. Usually you'd be grateful to be the specialest person in the world or whatever, but right now it's not working in your favor.

"Tobi is gonna win the bet," he says with a laugh and spins around the room. "Because Tobi's a good boy!"

"Are you sabotaging me? Is he in on this?"

"No, no." Tobi staggers backwards at the suggestion and trips over despite the barren state of the floor. "Tobi would never do anything like that! Tobi's a good boy."

"I'm so going to win this," you say. "You know I don't play around about 5,000 ryo."

"Tobi's a-"

"Stop saying that!"

He pretends to cry. You ignore him to contemplate your next move.
