Sparklers (Kyra Cooney-Cross x Reader)

A/n Requested. Honestly this one isn't my best work but I just wanted it to be done, so it's not as substantial but I promise I did my best to save it from the clutches of undone WIPs.

Content/Warning(s): Fluff, Kyra being a pest.

When Kyra had first left for Sweden, she'd been adamant that she couldn't leave you behind.

But after many tears, hugs, kisses and persuasion in the form of future travel plans, she left for Hammarby IF, while you stayed with the Melbourne Victory.

Thus, nearly two years later, just a month before the World Cup and one week before the start of camp, a very tired and whiny girlfriend of yours sits on facetime with you, begging you to let her come over to Australia early to spend time with you.

"Babe, c'mon, I'd only be missing one match anyway."

And thus, you subsequently scolding the twenty-one year old.

"Kyra, no. No way. Seriously, play your last match, if I remember rightly, Hammarby haven't offered you a new contract right?"

She huffs, silently fidgeting with her fingers and not making eye contact with you through the camera.

"You need to play the last match, Ky. Be professional about it, please, if not for the club, for me? I want you to be able to get opportunities over there. Take it seriously and you can come see me the moment your last match is over."

She groans, letting her head hit the bed from where she'd been laying stomach down with her phone in front of her.

"Promise me, Ky. Play out the rest of the season. Even if you don't get the league, you've still got a trophy under your belt there, baby."

"Alright."

The look in her eyes as she turns her head away from the camera makes you sigh softly.

"Kyra, promise me you'll stay. I miss you more than anything, but your career comes first. Promise me."

She mumbles back, finally.

"I promise, baby, I promise I'll stay."

You nod in satisfaction, giving the girl a small smile and pressing a kiss to the tips of your fingers before holding them up to your phone as she does the same.

"Goodnight, baby."

"G'night, Ky."

So she does stay.

She plays her heart out in her last match, taking the draw with Piteå before finally getting on her flight to Australia.

She's exhausted from the match, and nearly forgoes showering and changing to switch tickets to an earlier flight.

Instead, she heeds your warnings of not kissing her should she decide to show up at the training centre without at least taking care of herself first.

She's already got her bags packed and ready in her rental to fly to Australia, and just about drags them to the match with her but forgoes it.

The poor aussie just needs to see her girlfriend. To collapse into a warm, fluffy pile of cuddles and-

"Flight 157 to Sydney, Australia, Now boarding."

She sighs and hopes the flight boards quickly, eager to see you.

Everyone was told similar times to be at the centre by, giving them a roughly six hour window to arrive in, given any delays in flights, although that doesn't seem enough knowing international boarding mid year can be dicey.

So you've taken the initiative to be in Brisbane early to avoid the traffic of the day.

It's ripe time at six-thirty in the morning, meaning you're far earlier than all of your teammates, even the one's closer to Brisbane than you are, and thus you have plenty of time to kill and nap in the lobby waiting for your teammates to start arriving at around ten.

Of course, you're startled awake by a slap to the stomach.

Taking a precursory glance at the clock on the wall above the receptionists desk, it's about three and a half hours later.

It's Steph and Caitlin, both of them sporting tired smirks at you.

"Well hello miss."

You just about jump into the arms of your vice-captain, having missed seeing the woman at the last camp due to injury, thus you haven't seen the woman since the games in April against Scotland and England.

"Steph!"

She chuckles, giving you a tight squeeze.

She had taken you under her wing the moment you'd stepped into your first national team camp just four years ago, not long after the World Cup but right before the Covid Pandemic.

She'd been the one to stick with you over facetime while you navigated the league in Australia, and of course, once a sense of normalcy returned and after the Olympic games in Tokyo.

You were often found in her room with her even though you'd all been given the privileges of single rooms.

Now, you tended to spend more time with Kyra, but, if your teammates needed you, it was always one of the two of them that you'd be found with.

"What, and I'm chopped liver, am I?"

You poke your tongue out at the striker, burying yourself back into Steph's arms.

"No, I'm just the favourite."

"Please, you and I both know you're no longer the favourite."

"Shhhh, let me have this, she isn't here yet."

Giggling, you nudge the defender and separate from her.

"I'm in love with the girl, but you're more tolerable, some days."

"Ayy, that's my girl."

She ruffles your sleep mussed hair.

"Hey! Hands off the goods, Catley."

You swat at the older woman, who dodges the tired attempt.

"Yeah, stop bullying my girlfriend, Catley."

Your head shoots up from it's laid back position on the back of the couch to look at the newly appeared brunette, standing across the lobby from you.

"Ky, get that cute butt over here, right now."

At your demand, she drops her stuff and runs over in two seconds flat, nearly tackling you back onto the seating, arms wrapped tightly around your form, nose buried in your neck.

Staying for a moment to just breathe each other in, your hands rub circles into the woman's back, your face buried in her hair, breathing in the scent of her shampoo, wincing at the smell of airplane on her.

She pouts when you pull away with a terribly hidden grimace.

"Baby, I love you, but you need a shower."

A soft whine from the midfielder makes you raise a brow at her.

"I just got in, can you blame me?"

There's a teasing smile on your lips as you wrap your arms around her waist.

"Obviously, you were supposed to shower before coming here."

Kyra huffs at that, crossing her arms.

"Love you."

She grumbles in response.

You nudge her, pouting.

"Love you."

Still no response.

You grab her face, turning her head back towards you with a small frown.

"I love you."

When she doesn't respond again, you start peppering her face with kisses and she gives in, grinning at you.

"Alright! Alright! Love you, too."

Satisfied, you give her a small peck, to which she chases you up for a second, a third and then someone clearing their throat beside you interrupts her from a fourth.

"Alright, you two, stop being gross."

It's a grunt from the striker on your left, which earns her a slap to the shoulder.

"Leave them be, Caitlin."

It's your final day off before the full commitment to the World Cup preparations takes precedence over your time in Australia, thus you want to do as much as you can with your girlfriend before your time together, alone, gets limited.

You'd had a few days off to explore the city, but nothing really concrete as you and Kyra had just wandered around the area where the hotel is.

This time, you wanted to plan something for the midfielder, something to last you both the couple weeks of the World Cup, hoping it would tide you both over, knowing it'd be torture not spending time together.

At least when she was in Sweden, you had space to yourselves over facetime.

World Cups are chaotic, and allow little to no time to yourselves, as you've so discovered and been told by the older girls on the team.

So, here you are, calling various different restaurants for reservations tonight, with, unfortunately, no luck.

Instead, managing to sneak away from the girl for an hour or so, you run down to the grocery store, pick up several of her favourite snacks, drinks, and a small surprise that you think she'll love and then rush back to the hotel, getting ready for a night out in one of the cities parks.

She looks at you suspicious when you drag her down, scraggily dressed in hoodies and sweats, to a taxi rather insistently, dragging a completely full duffle bag behind you.

Not that you blame her.

You would be sussed out, too, if she decided to randomly drag you out to a taxi at six on a Saturday night, carrying a nearly ripping at the seams, black duffle bag.

"Sooooo... Where are we goin', babe?"

"You'll see."

You let out a little laugh at the small pout she has on her face, pecking her sweetly on the lips in exchange for the small smile she relents at the sound of your giggle.

When you finally pull up at the park, you're all but dragging the woman across the green grass and to the edge of the waterline where you drop the blanket you'd been carrying down onto the somewhat flat grassed area.

It's lit well enough that when the sun starts to set, it's not ridiculously dark, so you take a little comfort knowing it's not entirely dangerous out, plus the added comfort of the occasional family or couple wandering by on the path just to the left of you by ten feet or so.

You nudge her to sit down next to you, hand settling in hers.

"I wanted us to have a nice little sit down together to just relax and talk and eat and just be stress free for a little while. Just to breathe for the night. Together. It's about to be even more hectic and I've missed you."

You pout softly, leaning into her a little.

She leans over, kissing you fully, hand on your face tugging you in closer.

You're both a little breathless when she let's your face go again.

"I love you, so fucking much."

Giggling, you kiss her once more.

"I love you, too."

Finally, you open up the bag and dump out the contents onto her lap, knowing you're about to have a very excited sugar hyped puppy on your hands after this.

Her eyes sparkle up at you, the grin on her face causing her eyes to crease at the corners.

"Just wait 'til you see what else is in there."

Eyes darting around the small pile, she digs through it to find a pair of packets of sparklers and a small lighter.

She feels giddy, and looks the part, too, her immediate giggle and hug crushing you making your heart just about melt through your body entirely.

It's adorable.

It's cute.

It's oh so Kyra and you feel your heart bursting at the thought that you get to call her yours.

You're dragged out of your train of thought by said woman dragging you to your feet, lighting a sparkler and handing it to you, running around you, both of your giggles and the small handheld fireworks lighting up the night sky and the river before you.

No matter where you are, how far apart they keep you, Kyra will always be your one, you realise.

It's a small, heartbeat skipping thought, but it makes you smile harder and enjoy the moment all the more while you can.

The sparkler she's holding blasts out tiny stars of combusting magnesium, being spread out harmlessly in the air and onto the grass as she runs circles around you.

It goes out within a minute or so, and she's looking over at you with puppy dog eyes.

"Babe, can you get another one out, pretty please? I wanna attack those cheezels soon."

You chuckle, obliging with her demands, a small kiss to your lips as thanks.

She may be a child at heart still, but she's yours.

LONDON, ENGLAND

she didn't know why she was nervous, her heart hammering in her chest and echoing in her ears as she gripped the steering wheel tighter, knuckles turning white. the sun was just beginning to peek through the usual clouds that plastered the london sky, but it wasn't enough to dispel the anxious dread that filled her entire being.

she glanced at her phone on the dashboard, and absentmindedly ignored the music coming through the speakers, willing the time to pass faster. she had never been more aware of her breath as she drove. every inhale, every exhale, each wheeze of air through her parted lips, seemingly magnified in the confines of her tiny car. it was as if the weight of the world was pressing down on her chest, making it harder and harder to draw in each precious breath.

the traffic was as relentless as the pounding of her heart, and she couldn't help but feel as if time itself had slowed to a crawl. outside of her car, london was beginning to stir, but she hardly noticed. her focus was entirely on the road, on the other cars and motorcycles whizzing past her, on the buildings that blurred past in a dizzying array of colors and shapes.

she had been here so many times that it was all so familiar, so mundane, that it almost felt surreal. almost.

nerves weren't unusual, but the fact she had driven this drive and spoken to these people so many times before had her shaking her head in disbelief and ridicule for herself.

the drive wasn't long - thirty minutes at best, and she was only a few minutes away now. as she neared the grounds, she could feel the anticipation rising within her like bile in the back of her throat.

pull in, park, simple.

as she pulled into a bay, she took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart, and glanced at herself in the rearview mirror. Her reflection was a pale blur, her features drawn and tired from the lack of sleep the night before.

a quick glance at the time told her she still had a few precious moments before she'd have to face them. she reached for her phone again, hoping to lose herself in the mindless chatter of social media or the latest celebrity gossip. but as she scrolled through her newsfeed, she was met with pictures of herself. god this is strange, she thought. she turned off the engine and sat there for a moment, staring blankly ahead, trying to gather her thoughts.

the air was crisp and cool against her skin, the scent of grass and earth mingling with the sound of shoes squeaking on the pavement. she took a step forward, her heart pounding in her ears, and scanned the empty space around her.

it was peaceful, quiet, tucked away from the hustle of the big city and it at all wasn't something she was used to.

through the double doors stood a man waiting, hair slicked back and out of his face - he was quick to turn around as the door swung open behind him.

"hallie, so good to see you again!" he greeted cheerfully, arms outstretched in a welcoming manner followed by a hand jutting into the space between their bodies.

she took his hand firmly, smiling, "jonas, great to see you!" they were pleasantries, but the human contact was enough to simmer the acidic burn in the back of her throat.

"lets walk," he said whilst gesturing hallie to take the space beside him, as he slipped his mobile into the pocket of his arsenal branded trousers. "the girls are very excited to meet you," he continued, smiling.

"i'm excited too,"

"nervous at all?" he interjected

"can you tell?" she said through an exhale. they shared a laugh, jonas patting her on the shoulder supportively.

"you'll be fine, they're a really nice bunch - on a plus, you already know steph so i'm sure you will fit right in,"

"i really hope so, i'm just so pleased to be here,"

they walked for a couple of minutes, continuing the conversation about the transition, the move - all the exciting but terrifying things that came with a transfer. he complimented the kit, which made hallie laugh. trading in her blue for red had been hard, feeling as if she was playing dress up the first time she put it on. an arsenal jersey carries such weight, such expectation, and she felt that wholly.

he was easy to talk to, hallie thought at least, easy to bounce off of in her nervy bubble. they turned down a hallway, then stopped outside another set of doors. he turned towards her.

"ready?"

she took a deep breath, shaking through her sinuses and shutting her eyes, then exhaled with a smile and small nod.

"ready."

he knocked twice, making himself known with a shout to avoid any awkward situations. he waited a beat before opening the door and ushering hallie inside with him.

on the other side of the door sat a changing room, adorned with jerseys and boots galore. the team stood in their respective areas, some in small groups talking, others on their phones. jonas' presence caught their attention, and the noise in the room simmered to a silence when you took your place ahead of them.

"everyone, this is hallie king."

On 19th February 1980 Ronald Belford “Bon” Scott died.

Ronald was born on July 9, 1946 in Kirriemuir, Bon’s parents hailed from musical families; his father, Charles, known to friends and relations as Chick, played drums in the Kirriemuir Pipe Band and performed with the local light-opera company. In 1952, the Scott family relocated to Australia.

The Scott's first resided in Melbourne before settling in the Adelaide suburb of Sunshine. In 1956, Bon’s brother Graeme was diagnosed with asthma and the Scott family relocated to Fremantle. Scott who rose to fame as the leading singer and songwriter of the hugely popular hard rock band AC/DC during the 1970s. He loved music from a young age and was a highly creative and rebellious youngster.

Scotland’s Fife Free Press reported in 1962: “One of the side drummers in the Fremantle Pipe Band, who played at the opening ceremony of the Empire Games in Perth, was Ronald Scott, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Scott, who formerly resided in Roods, Kirriemuir, as seen in the black and white pic.

As is common with unruly teenagers, he often found himself in trouble with the authorities. He dropped out of school at 15 and had brushes with the law which had him sent to the Riverbank Juvenile Institution. Labelled as a social misfit, he was denied a position in the Australian army. He worked at several odd jobs to support himself after leaving school.

Scott started playing drums during his adolescent years and formed his first band The Spektors, in 1964. He played for some other bands as well before joining AC/DC as their lead singer. The band’s popularity reached new heights after Scott joined them; their debut album ‘High Voltage’ was a big hit. Within a year the band brought out the single, ‘It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll)’ which soon became known as the quintessential rock anthem.

On 19th February 1980, Bonn passed out after a night of heavy drinking in a London club called the Music Machine 1980, he was left to spend the night by a friend. The next day he was found lifeless and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The official cause of his death was listed as acute alcohol poisoning. His grave is considered the most visited in Australia and the National Trust of Australia has included it on its list of classified heritage.

Australia's biggest Twenty20 cricket league, the Big Bash League (BBL), is made up of teams located in cities. It is well-known for its fast-paced and exciting structure, and it usually runs from December to February. Since its founding in 2011, the league has gained prominence and drawn both Australian talent and talents from other countries. Teams like the Sydney Sixers, Melbourne Stars, and Perth Scorchers battle it out for the championship in famous venues across the nation. The Australian cricket season's biggest event, the BBL is renowned for its exciting atmosphere, engaging fan base, and high-scoring matches. The BBL gives players a competitive edge and a worldwide appeal by featuring both established international cricket stars and up-and-coming talent. Finally, the league has made a substantial contribution to the expansion of T20 cricket by highlighting the exciting elements of the format and helping to nurture players who succeed in this shortened version of the game.

The way that Cricket Australia has responded strategically to the recent turmoil surrounding the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League is a very well thought out plan. The challenging assignment essentially entails requesting detailed proposals from prospective Team owners who have already contacted a player to captain their teams. The last four possibilities have been selected by Cricket Australia, which will choose the best one to form a new Big Bash League team. In-depth analyses of the suggested cricket infrastructure, cutting-edge team facilities, creative marketing approaches, and comprehensive community engagement programs would all be necessary for CA. Carefully vetting each proposal is the responsibility of a carefully chosen selection committee made up of business professionals, league executives, and seasoned cricketing greats. Beyond the obvious, the criteria consider the importance of cricket to the club owners, the size of the leaders' current fan base, economic feasibility studies, and the possibility of igniting a thriving cricket culture in the neighborhood. Concurrently, the committee is developing strict ownership and management policies to create a model for openness, moral behavior, and sound financial standing.

This comprehensive and complex strategy aims to create a revolutionary change in the league's course rather than just solving the problems that plagued the Sydney Sixers. Cricket Australia hopes to establish a new side that will play at the highest level of T20 cricket while also fitting in well with the local sports culture. Through the cultivation of a culture that is marked by impartiality, absolute responsibility, and proactive engagement with the community, this all-encompassing project seeks to establish the Big Bash League as the pinnacle of quality and enjoyment within the international cricket scene.

The whiskey burned as it slid down my throat, making my thoughts hazy as the music got louder. The club was packed, people everywhere in varying states of drunkenness. I felt a pair of hands grip my waist and I sagged into the warm body behind me.

“Having a good time?” my boyfriend whispered.

 I felt myself shrug in response. Whilst my boyfriend had been roaming the club, a group of his ‘fans’ decided to harass me. They called me fat, a slag and a bunch of other names before going on a tangent about how I was unworthy of him and that he deserved better than a “fat bitch like me”. I loved my boyfriend, and I was forever grateful that he took even the slightest interest in me, but I couldn’t help but yearn for a life where I wasn’t constantly monitored on my face and weight. I’d slimmed down a lot since we started dating, the comments people had made finally getting to me, I was finally to a place where I was happy but I guess that wasn’t enough.

“I think I’m gonna go out for a smoke.” I whispered back, moving towards the stairs that lead to the rooftop. I felt my boyfriend's presence behind me as the air grew colder around me. As I walked out onto the rooftop, I pulled my pack of cigarettes out of my pocket and gently plucked a single cigarette out of the packaging. I carelessly placed the stick between my burgundy lips and held out the pack to the man behind me. His fingers grazed mine as the pack slipped from my fingers. With my hand now free, I slipped my hand into my bra to grab my lighter. As my finger flicked the tab I quickly moved the end of my cigarette closer to the dancing flame. Once the paper glowed red I took a deep inhale to let the smoke travel to my lungs.

“What’s going on baby?” Chan asked, moving to stand behind me. I let myself sink into his embrace as I took another drag of poison. 

“They keep saying things, the girls were on me as soon as you left my side. I hear what they say when they think I can’t hear and I know what they say when they stare right at me. I know I’m not your stereotypical skinny woman but it feels like I need to be. I know I don’t deserve you, I know I need to be grateful that you even chose to look in my direction, I know.” I reply, staring out over the city lights of Melbourne. I take another drag from my cigarette as I feel Chan’s hand caress my waist. I glance to my right and watch as Chan takes a drag from his cigarette and exhales the smoke into the cold night air.

“Well,” he begins, turning to further encase me in his embrace, “I don’t care about them, if I did, I would be with them. But I’m not. I fell for your gorgeous smile, and later on your personality as I got to know you. I love your wit and sarcasm and I love how your smile can leave any man weak in the knees and yet you chose me. Those girls are jealous because you managed to catch my attention, and they know that you look amazing with the personality of an angel and that’s why they try to bring you down.” he pauses, tossing his cigarette to the ground and stubbing it out with his foot.

“And between you and me, I can’t say I hate these love handles.” he whispers, grabbing my hips with his large hands and pressing me against him. I let a small gasp escape my lips as I felt the throbbing erection in his jeans against my ass.

Here is my recap of the Up and Down Under (Acafella's) episode of the podcast.

This is not exactly their favorite episode. It is not quite on the same level as the Pilot or Showmance.

After rewatching the episode Jenna's feelings changed. She still doesn't enjoy the acafella parts of the episode. She did enjoy the parts leading to Kurt coming out and the Sue and the cheerios parts.

The dislike of the episode might also be because it is centered around the adults.

When the episode aired the cast was in Australia doing press events.

It was the first time Kevin went to a strip club. They landed in Melbourne and went straight to a strip club.

The reception in Melbourne and Sydney was very warm. Thousands of kids showed up for the events in those cities. It was jarring and shocking to the cast. They didn't understand why so many fans had showed up.

It was the first time they were treated like celebrities/famous people.

They did the bridge climb in Sydney.

They were hungover during the bridge climb and freaked out a little bit about having to a breathalyzer test before being able to do the climb.

This trip was monumental for them.

The #1 song at the time was I've Got A Feeling by the Black Eyed Peas. They would do lots of events with them and even ride on the same plane at times.

It was the week of the Emmy's when this episode aired.

They are going to try a new recap style. They are going to talk about each storyline separately and then go from there.

This is the beginning of the big guest stars.

The actor who played Henri (John Lloyd Young) was dating Lea at the time.

How did they get away with performing I Wanna Sex You Up?

Kevin was the only one not in the PTA performance scene.

Jenna remembers meeting Josh Groban and being starstruck.

The scene with Josh Groban and Sandy Ryerson is hilarious.

This was the first time Emma mentions John Stamos.

Every Broadway show has a dad song. The acafella's part of the episode is the dad song.

We get some scheming from Sue and the Cheerios. We get some nuggets of comedic brilliance form Naya.

Jenna loves early Quinn and Santana. They were like minions of Sue.

Tina got a line during the Vocal Adrenaline scenes and only had to do it once.

Harry's wife was in this episode. She was a part of Vocal Adrenaline.

Cheyenne Jackson was supposed to play Dakota Stanley. He travelled to LA and did his fitting. He got the flu. Lou in the costume department took care of him. He thought his Glee moment was over but Ryan created something else for him.

The c plot is the best plot of this episode. Mercedes has a crush on Kurt.

The gayvention was really fun to shoot. Jenna had fun getting to say Kurt is lady fabulous.

Jenna was invested in Bust Your Windows.

Amber and Kevin had been talking about Jasmine Sullivan. Amber talked about it with Ryan. This was the first time something they really loved got added to the show.

Bust Your Windows is the highlight of the episode for Jenna.

Kurt coming out to Mercedes was a huge deal. It was not something that was shown at network on tv at the time.

Shirtless Shue was at 7 mins 53 seconds. We are 3 for 3 so far. He has been shirtless in every episode.

Kevin's second favorite scene to shoot was the scene where Dakota was berating them. The cast were not professional at all. They couldn't help but laugh. The actor playing Dakota was a professional was even adlibbing some stuff.

Kevin and Jenna think that the line Rachel says when she storms out about being taller then Dakota was adlibbed.

This was the first instance of Frankenteen.

Frankenteen was Cory's original twitter handle.

Jenna's favorite scene of this episode is Sue's office.

The quote of the episode is, "I am going to ask you to smell your armpits. That is the smell of failure and it's stinking up my office."

Santana running out crying because she gets her tanning privileges revoked was the best.

Deborah Monk (Shue's mom) did a brilliant job playing drunk.

Everyone loves Howard Bamboo.

The Thing That Aged Well: Kurt coming out to Mercedes. Also what Mercedes said to him immediately after he came out. It is the perfect setup for what happens next episode between Burt and Kurt.

Honorable Mention Best Quote: Josh Groban loves a blowsy alcholic.

Shit We Found On Tiktok:

Ryan Murphy does backhanded credits. In American Horror Story there were credits for pale person #1 and pale person #2.

In glee there are credits for super gay warbler and other really gay warbler.

In the scripts in the stage directions Ian would write jokes and descriptions of people that would never be seen on camera.

Melbourne Chargers celebrate 15 year of inclusive rugby

From a little idea in 2009 to rugby world champions, Melbourne’s inclusive rugby team the Melbourne Chargers look back on 15 years as a beacon of inclusion, diversity, and passion.

Responding to ads in the gay press in 2009, 25 people gathered in Parkville for a session of social rugby on a Sunday afternoon in August.

This was when the Melbourne Chargers had their first 101 session.

Home and abroad the club has made a name for themselves as a force for inclusion and diversity, irrespective of sexuality, gender identity or fitness level.

Describing himself as “the classic fat geeky kid who always got picked last”, player Martin Commons wrote off sport at an early age.

“I turned up to training with low fitness and even lower expectations.”

“The learning curve was steep, but the sense of achievement when I played my first game a few months later was incredible.”

Success at the Bingham Cup

Over the years the Chargers have become a fixture of inclusive sport in Victoria and internationally.

They proudly won the Hoagland Plate this year at the Bingham Cup in Rome, the world’s largest inclusive rugby tournament.

A Cup the team won in 2016.

“It’s a moment I’ll always hold dear.” current coach Iain Abbott who captained that winning team told us.

“Not only for the final achievement but the journey getting there. It means something to pull on a Chargers rugby jersey, both here and when travelling abroad.”

“Joining the club allowed me to reconnect with the sport I played from the age of 8 until my early twenties, but never as an openly gay player.”

“With the Chargers I could live and play as a whole and authentic person, which in turn gave me great confidence and pride.”

Maybe they will have the same luck again in 2026 when the Bingham Cup takes place in Brisbane.

This year also saw several Chargers playing in the parallel Amanda Cup comp at Rome for female-identifying teams.

The first time an Australian club had taken part.

Isn’t rugby more of a NSW thing?

What was it about this masculine sport that drew them to the game?

For former player Michael Smith, it was community.

“Many people have found a new tribe through the Chargers. I often say people come for the community but stay for the rugby!” he laughed.

“It isn’t always easy making your way in this world as a queer person.”

“While our community is more prominent than ever, many of us still feel isolated and search for a place within it.”

“I’ve loved seeing so many people walk a little bit taller through taking on a sport that can seem daunting.”

“While I love all the success on the international stage, I’ve always been most proud of the way the Chargers have continued to take part in community rugby here in Victoria.”

“It’s where we’ve made the most impact, challenged outdated stereotypes, and won friends and supporters in the wider rugby community.”

“It’s also important to recognise that countless people have contributed to the Chargers in many ways.

“The supporters, committee members, coaches, medics and even photographers!”

To mark their 15 years the Chargers come together and celebrate at the Victorian Pride Centre this Friday.

And no matter your fitness level, gender or sexuality, they are always ready to welcome new players.

Pulp Storytime #26: To end all Wars! By Paul "Wiggy" Wade-Williams

“That’s a Matisse,” sighed Valeira. “People will bomb just about anything.” I took the original module, set it in Melbourne instead of Boston, and made the gal reporter character into Tess Truman, an otherwise clever girl who was under the impression that Florence was her exclusive girlfriend. We had the return of Madame Valera, AKA Valerie Schmidt, the Hollywood Boulevard psychic. The roster was completed by Steel Eagle and his sidekick Jimmy, mainstay Aldous, and Connie Smith, pro athlete. Valera was throwing Florence a birthday party, with Flo’s girlfriend Tessie… and Florence’s parents. Across town, Aldous had been hired by Bebe Bouchard, rival singer and member of the Century Club. His job was to keep “his adventurous friends” from entering the venue and upstaging her. Of course, Florence lied her way on stage and started a duet. The Eagle charmed the hell out of the doorman, preventing the security team from rushing the stage. From then on, Florence Zee was the hero of Melbourne. Unfortunately, Melbourne had its share of villains. Chemical magnate Brody Starkweather was tied into a Nazi plot; when the players snuck into his factory, they found local thugs led by Nazi Überman Klaus Adler. And worse, they had kidnapped Tessie! The group's element of surprise was ruined by an enraged Florence. The pistol-heavy party almost blew up the factory, but luckily the team found and activated an emergency override to render the chemicals inert. On the downside, most of the Nazis escaped, with Aldous managing to take out four with his revolver. Eager to follow up leads, and not wanting to talk too long to the police, the group headed to Starkweather’s mansion. He wasn’t kidnapped at all, and in fact invited them to dinner… Unfortunately, this was a trap! His cologne was poisoned, and none of our heroes had the antidote. Starkweather and his goons tied the group up in the basement. They had been very special guests… so he served them a bomb on a silver platter! Madame Valera and Aldous, both masters of discrete burglary, freed the group. Unfortunately, no one had much skill for defusal. So with only seconds to spare, Valera unlocked the door, and Connie sprinted up the stairs, through the mansion, and pitched the thing into the pool seconds before it exploded! (In order to celebrate her cleverness, Valera helped herself to the mansion’s artwork.) The group quickly realized that by not blowing up the mansion, they had preserved tons of evidence. Starkweather was going to use his chemicals to take revenge on the feckless Australian parliament! They only knew one orphan with a plane that could get them there fast enough… and after sucking up to her, were on their way to Canberra! Did the Alan Irani have parachutes? ——— There’s not a lot of space to maneuver inside a zeppelin pilot house. That’s just the way Klaus Adler liked it; he took wild swings at Jimmy (who somehow survived with great rolls). And despite the Nazis taking Tessie hostage again, the fight was remarkably even. Starkweather emotionally abused the “faux bearable” Valera. Florence tricked a group of thugs into diving through an open door, but one of them grabbed her leg. Aldous got one of his rare knockouts, pointing out the pilot had a stain on his shirt, then cold cocking him. The tide was turned when Florence appealed to Starkweather as a fellow Australian. Surely he wouldn’t earn a place in history by using chemicals over ideals! If she wasn’t a Hometown hero and beloved in the press, it wouldn’t have worked, but she was utterly persuasive. Adler, outnumbered, pushed his way to the exit and dove away with his parachute. Steel Eagle explained that he was now 3-0. (“But you only fought him twice!” argued Jimmy. “Yes, but one of those times… He saw me from far away… and he must’ve run away then.”) Florence and Tess admitted their love, while the rest of the group awkwardly pretended that Florence had been faithful. Starkweather thanked the group for not blowing up his mansion, although he’d probably have to sell the artwork to pay for lawyers.

Lachie Neale: 2023 AFL Brownlow Medal Winner

STAR Brisbane midfielder Lachie Neale has won the 2023 Brownlow Medal, becoming just the 16th player in VFL/AFL history to win the prestigious award multiple times after prevailing in a thrilling count on Monday night.

Neale, who won the 2020 Brownlow Medal in a dominant season and will be playing to win his first premiership in Saturday's Grand Final, polled 31 votes to win from Western Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli on 29.

The brilliant onballer was confirmed as the winner only after collecting three votes in the final round of the season, with five players entering round 24 as winning chances.

Collingwood star Nick Daicos (28 votes) finished third after entering the final round level with Neale, with Sydney wingman Errol Gulden (27), Port Adelaide star Zak Butters (27), and Melbourne Norm Smith medallist Christian Petracca narrowly behind on 26.

It was Neale who surpassed them all, however, after saving his seventh best on ground performance until the final round of the year, receiving his Medal in Brisbane as he prepares for Saturday's Grand Final.

Neale joined club great's Jason Akermanis (2001) and Simon Black (2002) in winning the Brownlow Medal during the week of a Grand Final appearance, with Michael Voss (1996) making it five Medals in total for Brisbane.

The former Docker, who joins ex-teammate Nat Fyfe as a dual winner, was rewarded for a season in which he averaged 27.4 disposals across 23 home-and-away games, averaging 8.1 clearances as one of the game's stoppage specialists.

It was a different season for Neale compared to his 2020 win, which also saw him poll 31 votes but instead win by a massive 10 votes from runner-up Travis Boak, also collecting the AFL Players Association MVP and AFL Coaches Association Player of the Year.

The ball-winner, who was runner-up to Patrick Cripps last year, was caught by surprise as he emerged as a winning threat through the evening.

He was the first player to win the most prestigious individual award without being named in the All-Australian team since West Coast midfielder Matt Priddis in 2014.

"It doesn't sit very well at the moment. I'm sure it will sink in at a later date. I'm pretty rattled to be honest," Neale said after being presented with his Medal by coach Chris Fagan at a function with teammates in Brisbane.

"I did not expect this, and to be amongst some of those names that have won two is unbelievable. To be in Brisbane, preparing for a Grand Final, is amazing. I haven't been involved in this week for a decade, so I'm excited."

It was heartbreak for Bontempelli, who was also runner-up in 2021. Daicos, meanwhile, led the count for seven weeks after round 17 but couldn't hold on.

The young Magpies star, in just his second season, was the pre-count favourite and made a fast start as expected, polling 13 votes to lead after six rounds with three early best-on-ground performances.

His votes dried up over the next four rounds, however, with the midfielder overlooked for votes in some of the bigger performances of his season, including a 41-disposal game against Greater Western Sydney in round nine.

Petracca and Neale instead made a run and jockeyed at the top of the leaderboard through the middle stages, with Neale taking the lead back for a three-week run after round 14.

Gold Coast midfielder Noah Anderson was the surprise vote-getter, sitting as high as equal second after 15 rounds following his fifth best-on-ground performance and remaining in striking distance thereafter.

The leading contenders all pressed with big games in round 16, with Daicos collecting his second consecutive set of three votes to move into second place on the leaderboard, just one vote behind Neale.

The 20-year-old continued to surge in a stunning run of post-bye form and took the outright lead in round 17 during a run of four consecutive best-on-ground performances.

Daicos had a battle on his hands knowing injury would strike early in the round 21 clash against Hawthorn, but he held the lead all the way to the final round of the season.

Louis Tomlinson's Australian Tour Setlist Revealed

Louis Tomlinson was joined by British indie rockers Sea Girls and Melbourne five-piece The Velvet Club on the first night of his 'Faith In The Future' Australian tour.

Louis Tomlinson kicked off his highly anticipated Faith In The Future Australian tour – in support of his latest album of the same name – at Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl last night.

Joined by British indie rockers Sea Girls and Melbourne five-piece The Velvet Club, Tomlinson played his first show to devoted fans ahead of his gigs at Brisbane’s Riverstage (30 January) and Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena (2 February).

Now, if you don’t like spoilers, look away, as we’re about to delve into Tomlinson’s Melbourne setlist.

Most of Tomlinson’s Melbourne setlist consisted of new songs from Faith In The Future, but OG One Direction fans were also served, with Tomlinson performing the old-school hits Drag Me Down and Where Do Broken Hearts Go. In addition to paying tribute to the band that kickstarted his career, Tomlinson played another cover: 505 by Arctic Monkeys.

Before this tour, Tomlinson last toured in Australia in July 2022. Faith In The Future was a smash hit with local listeners, hitting #2 on the ARIA Charts.

“Australia is somewhere I’ve always loved and really enjoyed visiting,” Tomlinson said in a press release upon announcing his latest tour. “I have some incredible tour memories there, and I can’t wait to return and bring the Faith In The Future tour to Australia.”

On 19th February 1980 Ronald Belford “Bon” Scott died.

Ronald was born on July 9, 1946 in Kirriemuir, Bon’s parents hailed from musical families; his father, Charles, known to friends and relations as Chick, played drums in the Kirriemuir Pipe Band and performed with the local light-opera company. In 1952, the Scott family relocated to Australia.

The Scott’s first resided in Melbourne before settling in the Adelaide suburb of Sunshine. In 1956, Bon’s brother Graeme was diagnosed with asthma and the Scott family relocated to Fremantle. Scott who rose to fame as the leading singer and songwriter of the hugely popular hard rock band AC/DC during the 1970s. He loved music from a young age and was a highly creative and rebellious youngster.

Scotland’s Fife Free Press reported in 1962: “One of the side drummers in the Fremantle Pipe Band, who played at the opening ceremony of the Empire Games in Perth, was Ronald Scott, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Scott, who formerly resided in Roods, Kirriemuir.

As is common with unruly teenagers, he often found himself in trouble with the authorities. He dropped out of school at 15 and had brushes with the law which had him sent to the Riverbank Juvenile Institution. Labelled as a social misfit, he was denied a position in the Australian army. He worked at several odd jobs to support himself after leaving school.

Scott started playing drums during his adolescent years and formed his first band The Spektors, in 1964. He played for some other bands as well before joining AC/DC as their lead singer. The band’s popularity reached new heights after Scott joined them; their debut album ‘High Voltage’ was a big hit. Within a year the band brought out the single, ‘It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll)’ which soon became known as the quintessential rock anthem.

On 19th  February 1980, Bonn passed out after a night of heavy drinking in a London club called the Music Machine 1980, he was left to spend the night by a friend. The next day he was found lifeless and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The official cause of his death was listed as acute alcohol poisoning. His grave is considered the most visited grave in Australia and the National Trust of Australia has included it on its list of classified heritage.

Fans of the singer flock to Kirriemuir, pandemics allowing, for an annual 3 day  celebration of his life called Bonfest.

It was originally held in July on the weekend closest to his birthday but had moved to May because of other events in the local area during July, however this years Bonfest will be held on  Friday 28th April • Saturday 29th • Sunday 30th April 2023  https://www.bonfest.com/
