Chapter One: We Were Six

We were six years old when Bart nearly died. Six. He was in the hospital for four days. It was the longest we’d ever been apart. I might’ve lost my mind if Owen hadn’t been there. I still feel like that sometimes when we’re apart… Like he’ll die and leave me missing the other piece of me. Bart’s never been careful, and I guess that’s why I’m sitting here writing all this. Someone has to write Bart’s story, and it should be me. Maybe it’ll help me be less afraid of losing him. Maybe it’ll make him more careful.

Okay. How do I start? Let’s try this:

We’re mirror-image twins. An extremely rare occurrence among twins. He was right-handed, and I was left. He had a birthmark on the left side of his chest at the bottom of his ribcage. I had the same birthmark on the right. Bart had a crooked grin where his lips curled up toward the right side of his face, and my grin curled up toward the left side. We did everything together, but we couldn’t be more different. I was shy, boring, and prone to emotional outbursts, while Bart was outgoing, odd, and unruffled. I wanted to be him sometimes. Absorb the best parts of him and walk around smiling his smile and laughing his laugh. But that’s beside the point. We’re mirror-image twins… And no one knows my twin better than I do. That’s why I know he’s not hallucinating. So don’t assume I’m writing this about my poor sick brother. I’m writing about the tragedy of strange gifts.

Bart was sick with pneumonia when we were six years old, and I was sure he’d die. I could feel it. It felt like the moment before you pass out, and your heart flutters and your head goes all fuzzy. I remember gripping the hospital bed's railing as the doctors tried to separate us. I couldn’t leave his side. The monitor beeped, alerting the nurses to his low oxygen level, and his eyes rolled back. I was twinless for eighty-five seconds. Eighty-five agonozing seconds. My body went cold, and Owen dragged me out of the room, kicking and screaming, but I couldn’t hear myself.

Then Grandpa Barry came out, and he rubbed my back. “It’s okay. Bart’s okay… They’ve got him back. He needs to rest, but he’ll be better once they stabilize him,” Grandpa Barry reassured me. He got us a pizza, and we ate in the parking lot that night because I refused to leave the hospital. Bart slept in a medically-induced coma for two days until the doctors said my brother could breathe without assistance, and I visited him on the third day. He sipped warm apple juice through a straw, and Mom held the cup.

None of us spoke. The room was eerily silent as we waited for Bart to speak. “Don’t go,” Bart rasped as he stared straight ahead. None of us moved. It was like he saw straight through us.

“Who’re you talking to, Bubba?” Dad asked.

“My friend… The lady,” Bart whispered, “She’s right there.”

Mom smiled and exhaled gently. “Oh, is she your age?” Mom questioned.

“No. My friend’s almost a grownup… Like Wally… Do you know her, Wally?” Bart asked. Wally knit his brows together and shook his head.

“Is she cute?” Wally asked. I couldn’t speak. They were all making jokes, and Bart was serious. I think he knew they didn’t believe him.

“She’s not laughing,” Bart muttered. I climbed into bed with him and laid my head on his shoulder.

“Bart? Do you want me to stay?” I asked. I wanted him to ask me, but I knew he wouldn’t. I wanted him to tell me he needed me, but he didn’t speak. He linked pinkies with me. That gesture meant everything to me. It was our I love you. It was our Never leave me.

It was the first time he mentioned his friend, but it wouldn’t be the last. To be honest, I was so preoccupied with being jealous of her that I never once doubted her existence. Bart didn’t get released from the hospital until the end of the week, but no one told me why he couldn’t come home. Not the real reason anyway. I was much older when Grandpa told me Bart had a brain examination. I felt terrible for all the years I joked about him getting his head checked.

Grandpa stayed home with Owen and me, playing games with us, while Mom, Dad, and Grandma stayed with Bart. We sat on the floor, gluing jigsaw puzzles with wood glue and small wooden boards. The jigsaws taught me a lesson. You start with the edges to see the picture. That was how people had to see Bart. Once you got Bart’s outer pieces, you could see him for what he was. And that’s how I managed to make sense of Bart’s gift my whole life.

Everyone thought he came back wrong, but no one would have known this was his gift all along. Even when the hospital discharged him, Bart didn’t get to come straight home. He got to stay with Uncle Max and Aunt Helen. Mom said he needed the extra attention and the wide-open space. I cried constantly during that time.

It wasn't until I stopped eating that they brought him home. I never had the words to say what I wanted from my parents, and it frustrated me to no end. Owen tried to understand, but no one knew the bond I had with Bart. No one could possibly understand how I felt. Not even Dad.

I had to be there when we picked him up at the airport. His eyes never fixed themselves on me. He always looked elsewhere. I wanted him to see me. Run to me. I wanted him to show signs that he loved me like I loved him. "Helen, she is real! You can't see her, but she's there! And she's not-!" I touched his hand.

"I missed you," I whispered, "Could you-?" I couldn't ask him for a hug. I was so terrified he'd say no.

"Let's go play," Bart replied angrily as he grabbed my hand. He led me away from the adults and toward the treehouse Grandpa built. We climbed up the ladder and shut the door. "They want to make her go away… I like her." He muttered something after that, but I couldn't understand it. To anyone else he would've seemed crazy, but I couldn't see him like that. It seemed strange to me that the adults were so frightened of Bart's friend. He liked her and they wanted her to go away. It didn't make any sense.

"Bart? Are you angry?" I asked. Bart looked away from me and nodded at the window before cradling my cheek and kissing my forehead. It was such a tender and compassionate gesture. Completely out of Bart's character.

That's how I knew she wasn't imaginary. I smiled our crooked grin and threw myself into his arms. "I can't see her, but I know she's there," I thought. I wanted to say it aloud, but I couldn't.

their not related but Ash clings to Kabu more then any of the younger gym leaders do. it doesn't help that Centiskorch adores the kid almost more then Kabu who's raised it from a newly hatched Sizzlipede.

you can catch the pair hanging around Motostoke and the Galar News and Gossip rags go wild. because even though they aren't related they almost look identical standing side by side. they especially like to visit the food market that pops up every weekend during the more warmer months. you'll most likely see Kabu out and about shopping for weekly groceries while Ash is literally dancing in the background. Pikachu and a ridiculously big sizzlipede sharing space on his shoulders while Ash is double fisiting two very full kabobs. giving each Pokémon a bite from one of the kabobs before taking one himself from the other one.

it's an every weekend thing and it drags a lot of attention from around Galar since videos and pictures fly about and sometimes the other Gym leaders will show up as well. Raihan cooks a lot himself so he's always asking for tips and trick from Kabu to pick out the best produce and Gordie just likes to fuck around and not be near his mom so he's breaking it down in the background with Ash while holding his Shuckle and one of Raihan's Trapinch. Pier's is there in the background with his hoodie up, as much as it can be with all that fucking hair, and he usually has coffee in his hands. getting tugged around by Raihan when the group moves a few stalls down. just trying to survive off of the five minutes of sleep he's got collectively through the week.

Nessa joins when Milo comes along to bring hand cut meat to Kabu around twice a month and Ash is still dancing but he's recruited by Nessa to be her photographer because she always wear fire af fits when visiting anyone on her days off. she is a model after all. Milo just watches them in amusement with Kabu.

not to say he and Ash don't hang out. Kabu and a lot of the other gym leaders of Galar get a bunch of pictures of Ash challenging off the few Dubwool Milo's family keeps around on their farm. he always looses but his laughter as he's being bucked into the side of the barn or into a pile of hay is nothing but pure joy.

sometimes Kabu invites Ash to come with him too Ballonlea because that's where he gets all his mushrooms to cook with, Opal hooks him the fuck up with the best of the best, and Ash is still dancing in the back with Pokémon on his shoulder's but this time he's somehow dancing with Opal's Togekiss balanced perfectly on his head.

yes Ash twerks, he's good at it but uses the moves to dance to the wii themed music that constantly plays in his head, and the world can't really process him doing that with a 83.8 lbs or a 38.0 kgs Pokémon on his head while he does so.

Melony: come get your son, he's T posing Gordie into a corner and I can't take my sons screaming anymore

kabu: he's not my son *shows up anyways to collect Ash who's giggling like the little fucker that he is*

Kabu and Ash have the same disgusted/annoyed look on their face and the world only finds out about it because Rose and Oleana make themselves known during the pairs daily weekend shopping. Ash only starts dancing again when the two leave.

there's a lot of non fire type Pokémon that show up around the gym and it's just a universal fact that 90% of the time it's just Ash's Pokémon he caught in Galar so far. Kabu just takes after them because Professor Magnolia would kill both of them with her cane if her house was flooded with them because Ash doesn't and will never use storage boxes.

since Kabu is a middle aged man and his home turf is Hoenn he absolutely shows Ash some old ass anime he's watched as a kid/young adult and they make a night of it. Allister likes to join the pair and so Bea gets dragged along. they end up watching a lot of Studio Ghibli works later on in their get togethers.

Kabu can actually stay up surprisingly late without issue but he's a big bitch to deal with in the morning. he only grunts, huffs, and snarls like an grumpy Arcanine. Ash has somehow learned what each sound means and has successfully learned Angry Kabu Speak or that's what Gordie and Raihan call it.

Ash ends up staying at Kabu's actual home with the man as he takes on the Galar league, sponsored by Melony so there's no favoritism even though it's exceedingly obvious. it takes the old man three whole ass months before he realizes that Ash had taken over half his yard and somehow turned it into a blooming and fruitful garden.

there's a lot of Hoenn plants that are native but their mostly house plants. hanging from the ceiling in just the right spots to get enough light or taking over a few of the windowsills. a good quarter are in ports made from Hoenn, shipped with the plants which thank you Steven and Wallace, but the majority are handmade pots that Ash finds during his travels around Galar or from the weekend market.

Kabu totally gets a tiny crush on Delia from just the stories Ash tells him about his childhood in Pallet Town during dinner or when something makes a memory pop into Ash's mind. it doesn't help at all that Ash calls her over the Tv system at least twice a week, Wednesday night before dinner and Sunday morning before Ash is dragged into doing the weekly chores to spruce the house up for when Monday comes.

he would never say anything about it to Ash. Kabu would literally kill himself before speaking about having a crush of any size since Ash would go gossip with Nessa who's always around Milo at his farm after work, who'd then go tell Gordie and he'd go snitch to Raihan and Piers. in the end it would somehow work its way up to Rose and Oleana-

that doesn't stop the blush that lightly colors his cheeks every time Ash pulls Kabu into frame to say hi to his very pretty and very sweet mom.

Something about Leon, Gordie, Raihan and Milo (if that's not too many) with a s/o who has really weak bones? When I was 19 I got diagnosed with Osteopenia, which is basically the beginnings of osteoporosis. Another one of my health conditions is known to cause osteoporosis so I guess I should've been expecting it, but it still sucks.

I have to work out a lot because weight-bearing exercises slow the progression of this disease, and of course drink a lot of milk and take calcium. I like to think they'd all be very worried and protective, especially when out in places like the Wild Lands where the reader could get hurt.

If he doesn’t notice you feeling weak Charizard will move at super speed to catch you if you start feeling that way

He will also carry everything that is needed for you. Like your medication(s), different kinds of milk (he wants to make sure you have options), and anything else that is necessary

He will literally take off of work to help and take care of you

Need anything he will call Hop to get it while he is with you

Raihan will gladly stay at home with you if you want or need him to

He will accompany you into the Wild Lands but is always checking in with you to see how you are feeling and if you need anything

He will also go to every doctor's appointment you have unless you tell him otherwise

He just wants to be informed because he wants to know what he needs to change

Despite working on the farm and being a gym leader he will gladly retire from being a gym leader in order to have more time to help you with anything you need

Sometimes he will find you hanging out with the Wooloo's on the farm

He reorganizes everything in your shared house to have everything accessible to you

He even renovated a room to make it into a space where you can do your own thing and he won't bother you

Anything you want or need from the store he will go out and get it

If the store is in another place in Galar he will take you with him

Usually, the store is near Kabu and so you end up hanging out with Kabu until Milo is done

Does it bother Kabu? No. Does he try and help you with exercises? Absolutely. He doesn't push you past your comfort zone and what you have the energy for that day

Milo will drop what he is doing when he hears you are need

Especially if he knew you were in the Wild Lands

He will cry while hugging you saying that he regrets not going with you

Then he ends up taking the next three days off from being the gym leader

He knows all of your medications by heart but does keep documents on each one

Cause this AU got me by the throat and I love expanding on ideas with you (going off the assumption this is her more lucid/less violent times):

1. How's Max's mom handle daily life with the Dimitrescus? Her kid just casually having breakfast with cannibals, working for one, trading snide remarks and somehow not getting killed/attacked for it (Cass wants to, Mel just gives her a look to behave more in front of Max's mom - Max may take advantage until his mom scolds him for rudeness, even to a cannibalistic nightmare)?

2. You know the maids have gossiped about Max before, how is his mom handling that? Especially since some is true?

3. (Potentially little angsty) Oh God is Cass gonna tell her about some of the "dumb shit" (in her mind, honestly pretty horrifying for a parent to hear) Max has done while dealing with trauma?

4. Does she ever witness one of the midnight escapades (Mia being feral, group snack time, etc) and how does she respond?

5. Is Daniela trying to become her mother in law's favorite? Is she succeeding?

6. Does Max admit that Mel is his best friend?

ANyway

1 . It definitely takes a little time before his mom is somewhat comfortable around them, and even then it’s just… bizarre. Everything she knows about the Dimitrescus is that they’re merciless cannibals who will eat anybody that even looks at them wrong but… here they are. Eating dinner together like a normal family, with typical family banter going on. That her own child is taking part in. Him trading snide remarks with Cass especially scares her a little. Daniela tries to reassure her it’s fine “They’ve only fought once in the last month!” This somehow does not help.

Life really isn’t as… wild, as she would have imagined living with one of the Lords to be. There’s definitely moments of things being said/done out of pocket that’s clearly just normal for them, but overall it doesn’t feel any more chaotic than her own family.

Alcina and Mia try to be accommodating, and she actually makes decent conversation with them (dare she say she thinks they could almost be friends). Elena and Melony are both very sweet, she’s still not entirely sure what to make of Bela and Cass, but Bela’s been very polite and respectful, and Cass has been nice, if brutish. Daniela is very sweet. So, y’know, for a family of people eaters and their somewhat normal S/O’s they aren’t bad.

Looping back, Melony is definitely making Cass hold back from saying her usual snarky comments in front of Max’s Mom. On the flip side, his mom is also making him hold back negative remarks because “You shouldn’t be rude.” (Cue the “Sorry, mama…” “Good. Now apologize to Cassandra.” “*....Sorry Cassandra.”, to which Cass would chew him out for later. If Melony didn’t also make her apologize.)

2 . In terms of rumors/gossip, I feel like that’s something she isn’t entirely… surprised by, at the very least. It just largely depends on what type of gossip it is.

Even while living in the Village Max was pretty… not secretive about sleeping around with women, so hearing maids whisper things about him sleeping around wasn’t exactly a revelation. Of course there are exaggerations. Things that are clearly just rumors spiraled out of control. She can deal with those (though it does bring back some… less than fond memories of being harassed for having a “Whore (insert slur) daughter”)

There’s also… other gossip. Debates about his gender, whispers about his mental health, general mutters about his relationship with Daniela (mostly if it’s even real or not), something . Some of those are a little… harder to ignore. But Max seems to simply wave them off because “I don’t care what a bunch of idiots call me.” (which she’s pretty sure he’s said word for word years ago as well). She wants to talk to him about it, because she can tell it bugs him at least a little, but he doesn’t want to and she can’t make him. Even if she is his mom. She just reaffirms how much she cares for him instead.

It still bothers her, in all honesty, but she knows not much can be done about it.

3 . There’s things Max has done that Cassandra definitely classifies as “Just fucking stupid” despite it being part of a series of ongoing problems for him having no self preservation, that maybe she and some others don’t fully realize is super serious. Because not everybody knows how bad Max’s PTSD/trauma is and that it’s part of the reason for why he does certain things.

I can see Cass, when his mom asks about how he’s been doing, telling her about how he once “fell over the banister railing” in the main hall and landed on his face, or one of the many times he was shit face drunk and passed out and they almost thought he was dead, or literally any of the several instances of him getting into an “accident” that “could have killed him”. While his mom just sits there, horrified, and incredibly concerned for her baby boy’s well being.

Bonus points if Max is in the room with them (maybe cause he doesn’t fully trust Cass to be nice), trying to laugh this stuff off as “Haha, yep, I sure am stupid.” but silently freaking out because he can probably count at least 3 of those stories that were actual attempts on his life that he just failed at. But he doesn’t wanna bring down the mood or concern his mom.

I think the two of them have to have a conversation about that.

4 . Once. She’d gone to the kitchen for water, brought a candle for light, walked in on all Mia, Melony, Elena, and her own son all gathered around shoving snacks into their faces. They immediately noticed her, stared, Max said “It’s a coping thing.” Suddenly she wasn’t thirsty, and she turned around and walked back to the guest room with a muttered “That can’t be sanitary.”

They’ve never brought it up after, but she thinks about it sometimes.

She has seen Mia be feral more than once, though. She has no clue what her deal is, because Mia’s pretty normal like 90% of the time (Still a little weird, but normal compared to everything else). And then she’ll just see her perched on a chair devouring a bushel of grapes and a whole loaf of bread or something. At this point she chooses not to question it.

5 . Daniela definitely gets the “Must impress boyfriend’s mom” mentality real fast. Despite Max constantly saying “She already likes you, you’re fine.” Daniela is determined to be the best daughter in-law. She’s constantly trying to help and do whatever she can to stay on his mom’s good side (and maybe doesn’t realize she’s being a tad overwhelming)

To her credit, though, she probably actually is her in-law’s favourite. Cass is too much of a bully towards Max (well, and in general) for his mom to really like her, and Bela is… Bela. She’s very well mannered, but also just kind of awkward and stilted. Daniela is still weird, but she’s much easier to talk and get on with. If she had to rank them favourite to least it would be; Daniela, Bela, then Cassandra.

6 . I like to think the way Max was introducing everybody was like “This is X and she's pretty cool.” or whatever.

And then he gets to Melony, gently puts his hand on her head and is like “This is Melon Ball. You’ll love her. Kind of my best friend. She’s basically a sister to me at this point.” Which is not something Melony has ever heard him say out loud.

His mom thinks it’s cute her son has a little (haha) friend. (She likes Melony a lot more than the people he used to hang out with)

bart taking more after the women in his family appearance-wise is everything to me. he's essentially a mini-version of his mom, like the genes hit copy and paste with that one. and then i always think the one he should look the most like after her is iris (which i def think is the case in YJA. out of all the family members we've SEEN at this point i'd say he takes the most after her. in comics it's entirely dependent on the artist).

It’s just so precious to me because usually with speedsters especially male ones it’s always the narrative (ha they’re just like their male mentor, or they take after u barry/wally/jay) which u knw fair enough, but it can’t be denied how much he takes after the women of his life and it sure is underrated, especially comics wise where’s Meloni possesses A LOT of personality traits that we know of Bart. And with him looking a lot like Iris in YJA and seemingly being close to her well who are we to say otherwise regarding how much he takes after the women in his family 😁

For a ?majority? of the cast of the show, their family members appear to retain their original looks/identities (atleast name wise) from the comics, so it wouldn’t be far fetched to apply what we know of meloni from the comics to the canon of the show. Especially with him having big (in the context of YJA compare it to the rest of the male cast and he has a lot of hair lol) brown hair which just doesn’t really exist in the west-allen gene pool (atleast from Iris’ direct gene line nor barry’s, brown hair isn’t a recessive gene so it’s doubtful that Don would be able to pass it on but my gene knowledge is rusty at best without brushing up on things lol) aaaand i have totally gone off course but yeah this just goes to show how important meloni is to me especially as his mom lol

I can definitely include her parents cheering her on, but I actually had a question about her mom. What kind of therapist is she? Is she a standard one anyone can go see, or does she serve a specific clientele?

The reason I ask is I've now got two places in When the Day Met the Night where Bark talks about seeing a therapist: The first time he tells Jewel about the times he was sent to prison, and he'd get set up to speak with a therapist because the warden and guards would assume he was violent and had anger issues at first glance (the therapists he'd spoken to all agree Bark desperately needs therapy, but not for anger issues lol. Poor guy's so anxious and socially awkward), and in the epilogue he mentions that he's seeing one again now because he liked seeing a therapist and feels like it helps him to do so. Both are opportunities to name drop Miss Melony (if that's okay with you!), But I don't know which scenario makes more sense for her to be name dropped in. 😂 Would she have seen Bark while he was in prison, or is she his current therapist? Or neither! 🤔

Bad News of the Week:

Sabotage can be an act of warfare. For the past weeks, everyone has been asking who was responsible for the North Stream 1 and 2 natural gas pipelines destroyed by simultaneous explosions. The consensus is that it must have been a coordinated act of sabotage by what is presumably, given its complexity, a state actor. But which state? With what motive? Or terrorists? Everything seemed and seems possible. And then, a week ago, the entire rail traffic in northern Germany was paralyzed when two essential fiber-optic cables for the digital coordination of track occupancy were cut - several hundred kilometers apart. Targeted and compelling with insider knowledge of where and how to strike in order to cause the greatest possible damage with simple means.

Since then, voices have been rising warning of a new scenario: the specific sabotage of infrastructure in order to destabilize. The word "hybrid warfare" is making the rounds. And Bundeswehr General Carsten Breuer, commander of the Territorial Command, explicitly warns that a new kind of situation must be prepared for in today's world: "Here in the command, we are primarily preparing for hybrid threats. That's the state between not quite peace anymore, but not really war yet either." Every citizen, he said, must realize that they need to "change their individual behavior." For example, by buying a battery-powered radio. But also by changing his mental attitude (!). It is hardly reassuring when Breuer also states that "hysteria (is) a bad advisor".

The idea is scary when you think about what happens at home when the WLAN/WiFi goes down for five minutes: there's no music playing in Mom's kitchen, Dad can't get into his online meeting, and the kids complain that they can't watch their current favorite show or "meet" their friends for gaming. But what if the power goes out? For more than an hour? And across the board?

When the railroad company was asked why it wasn't better protected, the answer was short and to the point: cables for communication, signal switching, barrier operation, etc. also run along each of our railroad lines. And these rail lines are 34,000 kilometers long! So effective physical protection is simply an illusion. This is even more true for digital infrastructures. So there's only one thing left to do: include failure and sabotage protection in the planning, for example by means of separate secondary and fall-back systems. And then hope for the best. This also applies in a slimmed-down form to the home. Candles and radio, if you like. But we'd rather leave 300 kg of food cans and camping toilets to the preppers.

Good News of the Week:

Georgia Meloni, the inevitable coming head of Italy's government, has been able to successfully navigate an important personnel issue, thus also proving her assertiveness in the party spectrum. It is about the officially second-highest position in the state: the presidency of the Senate. And this was now awarded to Ignazio La Russa in the first round of voting with an absolute majority. Like his party leader, he makes no secret of his convictions. For example, he proudly shows journalists statues of Benito Mussolini in his living room and advises the use of the Hitler salute because, unlike the handshake, it is contact-less because of Corona. So the takeover of power by the far-right Fratelli d'Italia in Italy seems unstoppable.

Fortunately this seems to be different in Sweden. There too was a clear shift to the right in the last election, with the previously ruling left-wing coalition of Social Democratic Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson being clearly voted out. At the same time, the ultra-right Sweden Democrats received their best result ever, 20.5 %, became the second strongest party and laid claim to government participation. This came as a shock to many observers, as Sweden had always been considered a social democratic model state. But things did not turn out so badly.

About a month after the election in Sweden, the conservative parties Moderate, Christian Democrats and Liberals have agreed on a new government, and Moderate party leader Ulf Kristersson is to be elected prime minister tomorrow. The Sweden Democrats are not part of this alliance, but have announced that they will "support" this coalition without a majority of their own in parliament. A minority government, which would hardly be able to act in Italy, is not uncommon in the Scandinavian country.

In the day-to-day business of politics, therefore, there will be - to put it romantically - an original democratic competition for individual ideas, projects, bills, etc. in parliament. There is no majority coalition that has already set the agenda in a coalition agreement, which then only has to be worked through. Now, each time, support for individual positions must be solicited. This also applies to the Sweden Democrats, who - it has to be said - represent more than one in five votes in the elections and are therefore legitimate representatives of the people, even if it is unpleasant. The hope that pragmatism will continue to rule in Sweden's parliamentary monarchy is therefore justified even after this shift to the right.

Personal happy moment of the week:

Last Sunday, my wife and I picked up the Omicron-specialized Corona Booster. Even though I - who, unlike her, do not belong to a defined vulnerable group - was not yet called upon to do so according to the current recommendation of the German Vaccination Commission. But at the beginning of the cold season and another wave just in Bavaria it seemed reasonable. And then yesterday we gathered all our courage and came out of the cellar back into normal life: we were at a party! For the fifth wedding anniversary of dear friends. With lots of people, lots of conversations, lots of buffet, lots of dancing and lots of beer. And it just felt good - despite a few misgivings in the back of our minds.

Her starting conditions may not have been ideal, but she was also beside the will of the people with every single one of her first political decisions. And of the markets, see the dramatic developments of the British pound and government bonds. The resignation of Finance Minister Kwasi Kwarteng as a pawn victim will hardly help her: according to a poll in The Times, only nine percent want to keep her as head of government.

As I write this...

...it is 23 degrees Celsius outside. Mid-October. And the leaves are autumnally colored. "Indian summer" in the middle of Europe. Nice.

Post Scriptum:

Last Sunday, elections were held in Lower Saxony. The fourth largest German state by population and the first heavyweight after the Bundestag elections last fall. And the old prime minister will also be the new one: the Social Democrat Stephan Weil was able to buck the downward federal trend against the Social Democrats SPD. And has certainly benefited from a bonus of office. And his calm, unagitated manner as the father of the state. Two parties have made gains: the Greens, who now have a very good chance of forming a government with the SPD - the desired constellation of both parties.

And the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD), which almost doubled its share of the vote to 11.6%. The main reasons for their voters are, on the one hand, protest behavior against the established parties and, on the other, "price increases" according to the polls. Pfff... You might as well vote for a certain party because you don't like the weather. But that's how it is in a democracy. Every vote has the same weight, even if a voter's ability to make a politically sound decision may be questionable. But that's the raison d'être of every right-wing party in Europe: I'm dissatisfied with the situation, so I vote extreme in order to criticize "the system". Thanks for nothing.

Chapter Ten: Leukapheresis

“Stinky,” Bart rasped. Thad shushed him as he tapped on the glass. By this time, they were ten, and Bart’s health was worse than ever. “What are you doing-?”

“Be quiet. Your doctor said it was okay to tell you. I wanted to explain it because you would’ve said no to her. You aren’t gonna say no to me,” Thad whispered. Bart climbed out of bed and staggered to the chair by the door. Thad stared at the ground. He hadn’t seen Bart in months and had to explain things before he was too emotional to talk. “I’m gonna do the stem cell donation-.”

“I told you I wouldn’t-.”

“Shut up… I’m not doing this for you. I’m doing this for myself because I need my brother back. Don’t you wanna come home?” Thad questioned.

Bart trembled as he thought about Thad’s words. He wanted to say no, but his pain muddled his thoughts. “What did Mom and Dad say?” Bart asked as he shut his eyes. He knew he wouldn’t make it through another trip to the emergency room.

“They said it was up to me. It’s not dangerous… I read about it. I asked questions. I know this procedure inside and out,” Thad explained, “All you need to do is say okay. Let me keep my promise to you.”

Bart ran a hand over his face as tears fell from his eyes. “I don’t have a choice, do I?” Bart whimpered. Thad pressed his hand to the glass, shaking his head as he cried with his twin. “I’m sorry.”

“I’m not,” Thad whispered. And he smiled. “Your doctor’s coming… She’s gonna ask you if you’ll take my stem cells. And you better say yes. That’s how you can pay me back.”

Bart wiped his eyes and nodded. “I don’t know if I can pay you back this time,” Bart whimpered.

“You’ll find a way,” Thad replied with a gentle smile.

“I’m so tired, Stink,” Bart cried.

“I know, Smelly… Hang in there. I’m counting on you,” Thad whispered as he waved goodbye.

After five days' worth of injections, Thad came in for his first round of leukapheresis. Meloni sat with him in his bed. “Does it hurt?” Meloni asked. Thad shook his head. “Do you have to go potty?”

“Mom,” Thad whispered as his cheeks went rosy. “No, I’m fine. Is Smelly awake?” Meloni shook her head as she turned the TV down.

“Bart’s so sleepy lately, sweetheart. I can check with Dad. Let’s see,” Meloni whispered as she grabbed the walkie-talkie off the bed. “Is anybody awake in Starbase six? Over.”

“Mom, none of us say—.”

“Starbase six to Admiral Mom. I’m taking the afternoon watch for Commander Dad. Is Captain Thad awake? Over,” Bart whispered. Meloni giggled.

“Bart? Are you watching TV? Over,” Thad asked.

Meloni relaxed her shoulders for the first time since the donation process started. “No, my eyes are tired. Thad, are you okay? Does it hurt? Over,” Bart questioned.

“Nope. It’s not bad at all. It’s weird. That’s all,” Thad whispered, “Don’t worry about me. In a few weeks, you’ll be all better. Are you tired? Over.”

“A little. Are you? Over,” Bart replied.

Thad hadn’t slept in two days, but no one else knew. “I’ll be okay. Over,” Thad whispered.

“I could read to you,” Bart offered, “And before you tell me I don’t have to, I want to read to you. Dad gave me your bag by accident. You’re reading The Secret Garden. Do you want me to start from the beginning? Over.”

“Okay. Over,” Thad smiled. Bart started reading gently with a darkness in his tone that amused Thad. Thad shut his eyes, listening to Bart’s voice. He listened until he started feeling strange. His eyes shot open, and he whimpered.

“What’s wrong, Starshine?” Meloni questioned.

Thad shook his head, chewing his lip and stomaching the discomfort. The tingling in his legs turned to cramping, and he tried to hum the pain away. “Thaddeus, what is it?” Meloni asked as she stepped outside to grab a nurse. “Please—.”

“My legs hurt,” Thad mumbled.

The nurse nodded as she gently patted Thad on his ankle. “We can help—.”

“We can’t stop the—.”

“Don’t worry. We’ll get some calcium in while we do the treatment… Okay?” the nurse reassured him. Meloni grabbed his left leg at the calf and smoothed it. “It’s alright… Just—. Focus on Bart’s voice,” Meloni stammered. She wanted to cry, but there was nowhere for her to retreat. She had to be there with Thad.

“Are you still awake, Stink? Over,” Bart asked.

Meloni took the walkie-talkie and held it up for Thad to speak. “Uh-huh,” Thad answered. He took a breath and broke down. “Over.”

“Thad, you don’t have to do this for me. I’ve been around this long… I’ll make it until we figure something else out. This is too much. Over,” Bart whispered.

“No, it’s not. No—. You don’t have that—. You’re suffering,” Thad cried, “I can do this for you. It’s the only thing I can do. I can’t do anything else… Over.”

“You don’t have to do anything. Just—. If I don’t make it, can you forgive yourself? Please. Over,” Bart whispered into the walkie-talkie.

“Smelly, don’t say that. Please don’t say that. You promised you’d let me try,” Thad sobbed, “I can do it. Please, don’t take this from me. I can’t sit here and do nothing—.”

Meloni let out a sob. “Oh god. I’m sorry… I need to get out of here. I need to—.” Meloni gave the nurse the walkie-talkie and fled the room. She stood in the hallway, facing the wall, and held her fists to her chest. Barry could see her from the end of the hall.

“Meloni?” Barry called as he approached her. Meloni ignored him, sobbing as she tried to talk herself down. “Mel, it’s me, Barry. It’s Dad.”

“I’m completely useless here. I can’t make either of my sons feel better. I can’t even—. I couldn’t make a medical decision for either of them—. I can’t—. Dad, I can’t breathe,” Meloni gasped for air between sentences. Barry opened his arms, and she walked into his warm embrace.

“How’s Spike?” Barry questioned.

“His legs hurt, and he’s—. Thad feels responsible for shouldering all of this. Dad, I can’t—. There’s nothing in my power. There’s nothing I can do,” Meloni answered, “I’m their mom.”

“Yeah… And you’re a great mom. Fantastic. The worst of it is almost over. Thad is a match for Bart, and all we have to do now is wait,” Barry replied, “We’re gonna wait. Okay, Jellybean?” Barry kissed the top of her head. Meloni nodded. Meloni caught her breath, relaxing as Barry spoke. Meloni hadn’t spoken to her father since she married Don, but Barry filled that space for her. He was a father to her in every sense of the word. Barry didn’t mind it. It gave him a distraction from his worries about Thad and Bart.

Y/n was sleeping peacefully until her phone went off signaling someone had texted her. She prayed it was Milo because she's had a crush on the grass type gym leader since they were little kids growing up in Turffield. It wasn't Milo to her disappointment it was Raihan.

Raihan: Y/n me and the other gym leaders are gonna hang out today wanna join us???

Y/n: Yeah sure I have nothing better to do what time are we meeting up and where

Raihan: We're going hiking around Chirchester I'll pick you up in about an hour

Y/n: kk

Y/n got up and went to change clothes for the day. She spent about 15 minutes picking out her outfit because she wanted to wear something comfortable for hiking but not something that looks like she was dressed for comfort.

She grabbed a satchel and put things inside that she might need like a mini first aid and cosmetics like wipes, deodorant, and perfume just in case. As a mom friend she packed things others might need like a spare water bottle and small snacks. She went into her living room and greeted her pokemon and decided she would take her Espeon with her on the hike.

Y/n had waited a little while for Raihan until he finally showed up.

"Y/n! Hurry up!" Raihan shouted as soon as he showed up.

"God damn Rai" Y/n said running outside too Raihan who was riding on one of his pokemon

Raihan held his hand out too Y/n and helped her onto the pokmon helping her to sit in front of him.

Y/n and Raihan were talking while flying to Chirchester. Raihan had taken a selfie of him flying with Y/n so he could post it and so he could print it out for her so she can cherish it forver.

"Y/n you like Milo right?" Raihan asked

"What?! Is it that obvious" Y/n said slouching against Raihan

"Yes very obvious to everyone but Milo... and Leon" Raihan said laughing a bit at Y/n's reaction.

"Well that's good knews I guess I don't want to ruin our friendship" Y/n said sadly

"Y/n M/n L/n, you are gonna tell him how you feel today or I'll tell him myself" Raihan ordered

"Raihan I don't know it's so nerve racking I'm not the best around people and I'll screw it all up and embarrass myself in front of him and it'll be a total disaster" Y/n said putting her face in her hands

"Well, we're here little lady so woman up" Raihan said landing near the other trainers that were there

Raihan dismounted his pokemon then helped Y/n off. Everyone greeted the two and everyone caught up for a little while waiting for a few other people to arrive. Y/n glanced at Milo to catch him staring at her. Y/n and Milo looked away from each other quickly with a blush on their faces hoping the other didn't catch them looking.

"Everyone is here now so let's get hiking" Gordie said leading the way and everyone followed him up the beginning of the trail.

Y/n had ended up walking beside Milo. Raihan was behind her making sure she couldn't escape the situation he made sure to purposely put her into.

"The weather is so nice today don't ya think Y/n?" Milo asked a bit awkwardly

"Yeah it really is" Y/n said acting calm and collected but on the inside she was screaming.

The group hiked for a little bit until Leon heard something.

"I hear something anyone else hear it it sounds like a pokemon" Leon said a little bit worried

"Yeah it sounds like a Treveant" Allister said a bit scared.

"We need to leave then, Treveants are very violent" Y/n said everyone hushed and started to leave slowly until the Treveant confirmed its presence making everyone scatter.

Everyone ran different directions and met in the same area somehow. Except for Milo and Y/n.

"Is everyone here" Melony asked trying to do a headcount

"Milo and Y/n aren't" Raihan said a little panicked

"Well we have to go find them" Leon announced

"With your direction skills I don't think so, plus none of us have our pokemon on us but Raihan and he left it at the beginning on the trail." Gordie said making everyone groan.

"Milo what do we do!" Y/n whisper shouted

"Do you have any of your pokemon on you?" Milo asked

"Yeah I have Espeon with me" Y/n told him pulling out Espeons pokeball from her bag

"I have Eldegloss with me I think we can fight it off or at least distract it" Milo said grabbing both of Y/n's hands.

"But what if we don't make it?" Y/n asked

"Then I have something to tell you just incase we don't... I-" Milo was cut of by the Treveant racing towards them

Y/n quickly got Espeon out of its pokeball as did Milo with Eldegloss.

"Espeon use phybeam!" Y/n shouted

Her pokemon sent a poweful attack towards the ghost pokemon that made it stop for a bit.

"Eldegloss use leaf tornado!" Milo said backing up Y/n and her pokemon

Eldegloss had caused enough damage to caused Treveant to be stunned. When the two realized that the beast was immobilized the two made a run for it putting their pokemon in their pokeballs quickly.

Milo and Y/n had come to a clearing in the woods that seemed far enough away for them to rest. They were surrounded by a peaceful silence until Y/n broke ot.

"What were you gonna tell me just incase we die today Milo?" Y/n asked looking at him

Milo took a deep breath working up the courage to tell the girl how he was feeling.

"Y/n, we've known each other for years and as time went on I had developed feelings towards you... feelings of love. What I'm trying to say is I love you" Milo told her looking down at the ground

Suddenly Y/n hugged him

"I love you too Milo" Y/n replied

"So if we make it can I take you on a picnic as a date?" Milo asked

"Of course I would love nothing more" Y/n said

A loud gasp startled them making them pull away from the hug they were sharing.

"I found them!" Raihan yelled and soon every Galar trainer had come into the clearing.

"Y/n! Milo! We were all so worried!" Melony said hugging the two

"Are you two ok?" Leon asked

"Never better" Milo and Y/n said simultaneously

Raihan being touched starved because no one in his life is particularly touchy, besides Opal and Melony but it’s in that Grandma and Mom way, until he meets Ash and they start dating. He never realized how good it is to randomly feel Ash’s hand ghosting over his shoulder when Rai is sitting on the couch or how Ash’ll lean into him when their outstanding somewhere while doing errands.

Ash being so naturally touchy because even though he has a loving family he’s never been hugged a lot so he’s equally as touched starved. So when he and Raihan start dating Ash subconsciously wants to keep a hand on some part of Raihan at all times and he doesn’t even mean too. He’s just happy Raihan has been trying his best to be equally as touchy but Ash doesn’t fault him when he can’t.

Okay sure. I also couldn’t find the gif that I previously used for Gordie and I couldn’t find any gifs of him on the gif keyboard that’s on my phone. Which makes me sad because just look at his fashion. Such an icon! Anyways, I made the reader gender neutral and from Paldea. The Pokémon team I came up with for this one consists of Dachsbun, Houndstone, Shiny Mabosstiff, Farigiraf, Annihilape, and Skeledirge. I had a hard time picking one of the new starters. They’re all cute. And the reader is above the age of 20.

True Loves Gym Leader

Gordie never believed in true love because of how much time he spent working as a Gym Leader and spending some of that with his mother Melony. He wasn’t the type of guy to settle down with someone unless he had to.

That was until a new challenger passed his gym test. They used Pokémon that he has never seen before. They didn’t beat him. The challenger and himself met in the middle of the battlefield and shook hands.

“I hope that you come back to challenge me again sometime.”

He say’s trying to sound cool and confident. Alas, the challenger chortled at his attempt.

“I would love nothing more than to face off against the suave rock gym leader.”

They retaliated and they exited the building to go heal their team. Gordie was left standing in the battlefield stunned and feeling his face reddening. Luckily that was his last battle of the day and so he went to the one person who he talk to about his situation. Melony.

He was sitting on the couch in his mothers house trying to the best of his capabilities to describe what had happened.

“They made me feel like there were Butterfrees in my gut after they said that and left. Like I don’t know what to do because I’ve never felt this way about anyone before.”

Melony just chuckled at her son

“You’re in love, Sweetheart. And that’s not a bad thing either. If you’re happy then I’m happy.”

He looks at his mother and smiles

“Thanks mom. You’re the best.”

~Flash forward to about a year after you finally beat Gordie~

You and Gordie were wandering around Circhester. Gordie was asking questions about your team and your hometown.

“Well, Dachsbun has always been the gentle boy of the group. Houndstone is the one who everyone goes to since she’s always relaxing. Mabosstiff on the other hand is always on the lookout. She wants to protect everyone from danger. You better watch out for Farigiraf or he will try and take your food. Especially if it’s one of his favorites. Annihilape and Skeledirge are inseparable from each other since most are either scared or unnerved by how intense they look. But I love all of them equally.”

He smiles while he listens intently to what you’re saying. Not realizing he’s basically staring at you.

“Gordie, are you alright? You’ve been staring at me for three minutes now.”

He shakes his head

“Oh yeah I’m fine. Can I ask you something?”

“You just did.”

“Haha. Very funny. But can I though?”

“Sure. What’s up?”

“Will you be my partner? Like romantically?”

Both of your faces are now as red as your Skeledirge. Then you smile so big that your face might hurt later.

“I’d love too. I’ve actually had a crush on you since the first day we met.”

“Really? I had a crush on you since then too.”

You two share your first kiss and then head back to his place. After a month of dating, he introduces you to Melony and she thinks you are amazing. She loves you and Gordie together. She will spoil your Pokémon every time she watches them while you two are out.

Pitch Canker Challenge Prompts Part 2: Days 11-21 (Excludes Day 17)

Here's Day 11 through 21. So why did I exclude 17, you ask? It contains g/ore, and so does 30. I plan on posting those two by themselves; that way, people who don't want to see g/ore don't have to avoid entire posts. Just a couple images. Anyway, here's some descriptions.

(11) What the- wait a minute. Someone tagged Gary's car! That's not cool, mate. Not pictured: A slew of profanity coming from Gary Clabaugh himself, and quite possibly some scared teens.

(12) Gary found out the culprit: it was one of the school bullies, Sakura! Her father, Mr. Hamasaki, received a phone call from her science teacher Mr. Clabaugh, and now Sakura will have to take the bus for a while. This looks weird out of context.

(13) Gregg had been gone for way too long; like half a year, an entire career for some. Yes, this whole image is a reference to 'Lifetime Achievement Award' by Lemon Demon. Anyway, he learned that his best friend Melonie (right side, they/them), or quite possibly former best friend, was responsible for requesting a mad scientist to bring a dead body back to life...even though she was rather inexperienced with resurrecting corpses, as told by the sloppy stitch work.

(14) Micha (previously known under a different name and gender at the time of posting that on Twitter and Newgrounds) was working on poisonous concoctions, as she normally did. Her parents have high hopes for her, and dammit, she was not gonna let them down.

(15) Playwright and Micha are...somewhere. The kitchen, maybe? Anyway, their mother wanted Wright to do the dishes, and so does Micha. Wright, not knowing better at the time, thought dishwashing was 'a woman's job', which was something that wasn't expressed in the image; in-story due to avoid being chewed out by his mom and sisters, and IRL due to time constraints.

(16) Lee makes himself sick as a result of eating trash burgers. Yes, they're made with literal rubbish. If him eating that stuff didn't kill him, a random car will. 👽

(18) Relating to the unseen Day 17, Corvina helps Quincy nap after being up all night. When Quincy started showing signs of having psychic powers, his first vision was someone's horrific demise. This made him unable to sleep, which almost everyone noticed. Corvina cares a lot about him, and wouldn't want him to go down a dark and disturbing path.

(19) So, uhh...Mix, a 1-year old girl, a literal toddler, suddenly decided to ask one of her fathers where babies came from. That's extremely awkward, as neither her dads nor her uncle were prepared for that conversation. D'oh!

(20) Chloe callously rejects Micha's date proposal, only caring about how dating someone like her 'would've made her look so uncool'. This bothers the background characters in different ways; Sakura is annoyed, Corvina and Matchh are mad, both Playwright and Pattern look in fear as they try to prevent their brother Matchh from flying towards Chloe in a fit of rage. You could say he was...batty. Get it? 🦇

(21) Quincy had a lot of fun in the arcade, having enough tickets to play jump rope with. He noticed that Chloe worked there, so he decided to brag about the amount of tickets he had. Chloe tried to hush him, as she saw some parents reacting negatively to the profanity the nerd used. This place was like CEC, not D&B.
