Motivations:
Jaime Reyes (Blue Beetle)
My man has no idea what's going on throughout his entire movie. He's possessed by a homicidal bug from outer space. He is the official successor of a guy who REALLY wanted to be possessed by the outer space bug but couldn't get it past management and just decided to fake it till he made it with his billionaire budget. His family loves him. His suit is iconic. Sometimes his little outer space bug just goes "hey lil mama lemme whisper in your ear" and then it forcibly takes control of his body and tries to murder people. But also it loves him <3 I think he deserves to win, personally The writers were like "What if the teen superhero had parents that were alive and loving and not criminals" and proceeded to make the most wholesome guy. He power of friendship-ed a homicidal murder ai into being good. His darkest power fantasy is becoming a dentist. Lex Luthor tried and failed to turn him evil so hard he killed him about it, because that was easier. Also his costume kicks so much ass that the main thing that changes about it between redesigns is the eye colour. It's just that good. the 2006-2009 blue beetle run is not only my favorite dc comic, but one of my favorite comics period. it flips so many typical superhero tropes on their heads and does it well. jaime is an incredibly kind and well-written character and his relationship with his family and friends is so touching. Jaime is the perfect blend of goofy and sad, street-level and cosmic, kind and flawed. He was forced into becoming a hero by the weight of a legacy he didn't even know existed and a presence in his mind that would have him become a weapon. Before he even figured out his powers, he was hauled into space by established superheroes to deal with a Crisis and then left for dead for a year while his loved ones mourned him. His primary guides for his first solo were the hostile AI fused to his spine, a mercenary biker who only stuck around to see if he had to kill Jaime, and his normal parents. His greatest power fantasy was becoming a dentist because the power he already has over people's lives was crushing him. And yet, through all of that, his family and his culture and the mundane reality of being a teenager in El Paso were enough to keep him grounded. Read Blue Beetle 2006 and you will understand why Jaime is my son.
Mia Dearden (Speedy)
she's soooo cool and fun and silly. her boyfriend once cheated on her with emma watson! she's always wearing silly little y2k crop tops and baggy pants! she's a csa / sex trafficking survivor and lives with hiv! teenage girl character of all time!

Batfam Ages:
Okay, there is no such thing as an exact science when determining the ages of the Batfam, but the easiest thing you can do is work of the concrete ages that you /do/ know, and make them fit with canon events to the best of your ability. Now, canon changes all the time—which definitely makes this a challenge, but I’m going to just explain my process for determining their ages and you can disagree if you’d like, or you can use this to write fic like I do where ages are semi important,
Let’s begin. I’m going to give you the arbitrary number of 15, this will be important later.
Dick Grayson:
Depending on the canon, Dick is 8, 10, 12, or 15 when his parents die. All of these numbers will have problems depending on which you pick, but I go for the safe bet of 10 years old. Why? Well, a little known fact is that Dick ends up in juvie after his parents die, and he’s not immediately taken in by Batman. Thus, it takes a little while longer for him to become Robin, which doesn’t immediately happen after he becomes Bruce’s ward anyway, because Batman doesn’t immediately go and spill the beans. Thus, Dick ends up in Bruce’s car at around ten or eleven, but doesn’t become Robin until he’s 12.
Now Dick is Robin up until he’s about 18, when Bruce takes Robin from Dick because it’s too dangerous and Dick refuses to quit. Dick joins up with the teen titans full time, and he’s still Robin for a little while longer until we get Nightwing, aka Discowing, for the very first time at age 19. Simultaneously, while this is happening, a little kid is stealing the Batmobile’s tires.
Jason Todd:
Our beloved street rat Robin, Jason Todd, swings a tire iron at Batman and then gets taken out for fast food. It’s great, it’s cute, it doesn’t immediately lead to his adoption though, either. No, instead Jason ends up in an orphanage that is trafficking children. Bruce shows up one day to check up on Jason, and is made aware of this by his soon to be first adopted son (yeah, you heard me, Dick isn’t adopted yet). They take down the trafficking ring, and Bruce adopts Jason. Jason then becomes Robin at age 13.
Unfortunately for our boy, he was widely disliked by comic fans across North America, DC did a little telephone poll, and by a few hundred votes, DC changed comic history forever by killing off a high profile character what seems like /permanently/ for the first time ever. No resurrections this time. (Hah, right!). Which is to say, Jason Todd has the second shortest run as Robin at just two years, dying at age 15.
Tim Drake:
So then we get Robin numero 3. Tim Drake sees Batman getting darker and more violent and goes y’know, someone should do something about that. He tries talking to Nightwing, but he’s in a bad place with Bruce after learning Jason died via a Newspaper (yeah, Bruce sucks for that one), and tells Tim he won’t be going back to Robin. Thus, lil Timmy Drake gets an idea in his head. He looks himself in the mirror and goes, I can fix him, and then, Tim Drake becomes Robin at age 12.
Tim Drake has one of the longest runs as Robin, with only a mild interruption from a lil blond Bat.
Stephanie Brown:
Stephanie Brown starts off as the vigilante Spoiler, whose whole purpose in life is to spoil the plans of her C-list villain dad, Cluemaster. She meets Robin (Tim), hits him in the face with a brick, and then ends up dating him. Unlike most characters who appear a few times and never come back, Stephanie manages to stick around. She gets pregnant at age 15 (it’s not Tim’s, and no she did not cheat, this happened priorly), she gives birth, the baby is put up for adoption, and she becomes Robin after Tim’s dad, Jack Drake, finds out Tim is Robin and bans him from it. Tim is forced to quit and Stephanie picks up the mantle. She’s clocks in the shortest run as Robin, working with Batman for about two months before Bruce forces her to stop. Tim picks up the mantle again, and Steph goes back to being Spoiler—only to get killed by Black Mask, making her the second “Robin” to die. DC does retcon her death, and we later learn she was only badly beaten and sent off to live in a foreign country before she makes her return.
Jason Todd, Again:
While all this is going on, stuff is happening behind the scenes. Namely, Jason coming back to life. A common misconception here however is how long Jason was actually dead. While I wouldn’t be able to find the panels to confirm it, the true number is a “short” 6 months. Yep, while years passed in the real world, possibly decades, actually, Jason was dead all of 6 months. According to the books, he undigs himself from his grave six feet under (because Superboy punched through the multiverse or something?) and ends up wondering around Gotham as a mindless little zombie. Conveniently, Talia al Ghul stumbles upon her beloved’s lost little bird, and she decides to take him home and train him. He’s with them for a bit, gets dunked into a Lazarus pit, comes back very very angry, is shipped off to the all caste for a bit, and upon his return to the al Ghuls, is informed he’s been replaced by little Timmy Drake.
Jason makes his whole plan, and decides to make a splash by returning to Gotham wearing an old moniker of the Joker’s and taking over Gotham’s underworld. He beheads a few criminals, tries to kill Tim, tries to get Bruce to kill the Joker, and doesn’t really have success in those latter two objectives. That puts Jason at age 19, roughly. We don’t really know how to count the months he was dead.
Damian Wayne:
Shortly after Jason’s unmasking as the Red Hood, Damian Wayne turns 10 years old and beats his mother, Talia al Ghul, in combat. His prize is to be taken to his father and given to him for training. We know definitively that Damian is 10 thanks to this we can measure out the age gaps between the others and get their ages at this point in time. Dick at age 19 became Nightwing, while Jason is made Robin at age 13, so they have a six year age gap. Jason dying 2 years later at age 15 leads to Tim becoming Robin at age 12, they have a 3 year age gap. Tim is Robin for 3 years before Jason comes back and Damian trails after him a few months behind, putting Tim at around 16/17 while Damian is 10. I tend towards 16 instead of 17 because DC stopped aging Tim for a while, so it just makes more sense to pick the lower number. Thus, when Damian is 10, Tim is 16 as is Steph, Jason is 19, and Dick is 25.
Thanks to Damian being quite young, DC has kept an active track of how and when they age him. We know Damian is only with Bruce a few short months before he disappears into the time stream and Dick makes him Robin, and we also know that Damian’s 11th birthday is celebrated after Bruce is reinstated to the proper time. However, DC follows this up by killing Damian and making him the third Robin to die, the second to do so in the suit itself, and he’s dead for a significant number of months. In this time, Dick also dies—as in his heart is stopped by Lex Luthor for a few seconds, and then restarted, after his identity is revealed on live TV. Bruce decides to let the world believe Nightwing died and stayed dead, and Dick is sent off to Spyral to do secret spy stuff for Bruce. There is an issue around here in the “Grayson” run that claims Dick is twenty-one years old, which is ENTIRELY incompatible with the time line I just painstakingly established, and I go ahead and outright dismiss it because it clearly doesn’t work with a majority of canon. While Dick is with Spyral, Damian is brought back to life, and he goes on a year of redemption (which doesn’t actually last a whole year, but I digress). He and Dick meet again, and we move into Rebirth somewhere around here with the conclusion of Spyral and Batman and Robin Eternal.
General Events:
Damian turns 12 presumably sometime during rebirth, although not specified, I do believe Truth and Justice issue #6 to be his 12th or 13th birthday, but I lean towards 12 because of the costumes everyone wears in the issue. Steph is spoiler, Cass is Orphan, Tim is Red Robin, Red Hood has yet to don his solo Outlaw uniform, and Barbara is Batgirl.
I can’t name a specific issue for Damian’s 13th birthday, but it’s canonical that Damian turned 14 in his solo Robin series, Robin (2021) while he was off finding himself before the Lazarus Tournament, and since then, there’s been the Shadow War, Batman Vs Robin, Dark Crisis event somewhere around there, the Lazarus Planet event, Gotham War, DC Knight Terrors, and Beast World event, which catches us up to the modern day world.
Since Damian hasn’t yet turned 15 despite ALL of that going on, and is still for now at least, 14, that means Tim and Steph are 20, Jason is 23, and Dick is 29.
I know I mentioned Cass and Babs, and I would love to give you a proper age for them but I don’t know where to place them in DC canon like I do the others, however people do commonly place Cass roughly around the same age as Jason making her 22 or 23, and Babs tends towards being 6-8 years older than Dick, although that is an age gap DC has been slowly bridging over the years. Still, I put her at 35 years old. I don’t have a reference for Duke Thomas either, but he’s commonly placed as being two years younger than Tim making him 18 currently.
Lastly, I bring back the arbitrary number of 15, given that that is the number of years that separate Dick and Damian, I also use that age gap between Dick and Bruce—meaning that Bruce took Dick in when he was 25, and placing Bruce at 44 years old in main continuity.
Overall Ages Currently:
Bruce Wayne: 44
Barbara Gordon: 35
Dick Grayson: 29
Jason Todd: 23
Cassandra Cain: 22
Tim Drake: 20
Stephanie Brown: 20
Duke Thomas: 18
Damian Wayne: 14

I've realized why StephCass tends to dominate DC/batfam centric ship polls. It's because it's the least disputed/ most accepted ship. Like putting TimBer and TimKon is a bracket, of course, will divide the vote, same goes for any ship with Dick and most Jason ships. But StephCass is practically Fanon. The only people who aren't on board seem to be DC themselves. The people who vote for StephCass in these types of polls are
People who genuinely believe it is the best ship
People who couldn't decide between the other ships so went with the "safe" option (probably are used to seeing StephCass as the background ship)
People who don't care too much about shipping but also consume fanfic but not a lot of shipping centric fanfic, so the only really consistent ship they see is StephCass
Point is because MLM shippers tend to be so divided on which of their ships are best it creates this sort of vortex that allows for StephCass to consistently rank above all of them due to little issue or contradiction
And also because StephCass is really awesome

Motivations:
Greta Hayes (Secret)
She is such an interesting character with so many terrible things happening to her. Her brother murdered her. She became something not quite human after her death. She ends up imprisoned in a lab. Her brother continues with his violence only to get killed by their father. Only her dad gets arrested and ends up dying too. She gets a villain arc with Darkseid. (Although I didn't like that it was mostly about being 'yandere' for Tim, that was kinda misogynistic) Only to end up turned human again. Condemned to just having a normal life after all that.
Rose Wilson (Ravager)
She means a lot to me.

Rules
We'll have a preliminary round to see whether characters are prominent, lesser known, or actually obscure members of the Batfam. (There's also an option to vote them out.) So don't worry about whether your character is actually obscure!
Feel free to submit characters or send asks requesting them, but please include images when you do. (Either official images or your own fanart; don't send other people's art.)
Due to the nature of this bracket, I don't know lots of characters, so please include their full names (if possible) and any prominent codenames they've used.
Feel free to submit propaganda for characters that have already been entered into the competition, too.
You can suggest any DC character, but they're probably going to get voted out if they're borderline. I do still want to see who you come up with.
I guess you can suggest characters that aren't from DC but I doubt they'll get much traction? (But I guess there are a few popular crossovers, so who knows.)
Don't be hostile to characters, even once they go head to head. This includes characters you dislike. This includes characters you think are not important.
Don't be hostile to each other, either. Don't accuse other people of not knowing/understanding the canon. People disagree on definitions and that's okay. That's why it's supposed to be fun to vote on these things.
This includes debating politics or fandom wank. This is for celebrating characters we like, not dunking on other people's blorbos, even the popular ones.
Please don't be hostile to writers/artists either. I like a lot of the ones you don't and vice versa, I'm sure.
You're allowed to vote Bruce out. I think it's funny, too.
Leave propaganda in the notes like you do for all brackets! I'd especially love to know how you define the Batfamily and why you do or don't include characters in it!
Who counts as a member of the Batfam? I don't know, that's why I'm running polls.
What counts as obscure? I don't know, that's why I'm running polls.
This is just a popularity contest! Fandom is stupid! Blahblahblah I already asked everyone not to send me mean messages. Go run your own bracket if you dislike how I run mine; I literally didn't even advertise this, I just tagged posts and fans of the various characters found me through that. I'm sure yours will do fine and you can include or not include whoever you want.
How do you choose images? I pick an image where the character is in costume (if possible) in a style that I like or find iconic. For submissions, I just use whatever picture the submitter included (sometimes cropped), unless I already had something specific in mind for that character.
But what about - Because it's the funniest picture in the entire history of DC.
I like one of your edits. Can I use it for...? Yeah! Have fun!
Why can't I vote Maps out? :(
Why can't I vote Eddie out? :)
For New Tumblr Users: you probably want an icon so people don't think you're a bot. (Anyone can use these.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Submissions are closed unless you're resending something. I have a couple of times seen a notification pop up and disappear, which might be a glitch, or might mean that one of us has blocked each other on our mains. I don't block a lot of people, but tumblr is known to accidentally block people at random sometimes (or eat asks/submissions), and I don't know if that always even shows up on your blocklist. If you think this has happened, it's probably best to have a friend resubmit the character for you.

Batfam Sweep!
After seeing other DC Tournaments get fussy over members of the Batfamily winning in their polls, I thought, well, let's just make it so a Bat always wins!
Why?
Because I thought it'd be funny.
These aren't going to be 'Who is the best member?' or 'Which Robin is the smartest?' That would be boring. No, keep your eye out for 'Which Robin would successfully catfish Lex Luthor?' and 'Who would win the Gotham version of Celebrity Bake Off?' (The correct answers of course being Tim, and Jason, respectively)
How is Batfam defined: I will be making a distinction between BatFamily Member, and Wayne Family Member on occasion. Which means that characters like Steph, Harper, Luke, and Harley are considered Batfam, but not Waynefam, for example.
This is entirely for fun and absolutely should not be treated seriously and I just want you to get a little giggle in your day.
Please, feel free to send poll ideas to the BatAsk!

Lol I know people who work at DC, trust me when I say nobody important is pushing Dick Babs and it’s mainly because Nightwing really isn’t as popular as Batman and DC doesn’t view him as separate from Batman either, he is still Robin to them. Batgirl is way more profitable as a Batman side character similar to how Harley and Catwoman are portrayed. And since everything at DC is basically shifting towards adaptable content to compete with Marvel, Batgirl is able to expand on Batman mythos without having to change too much about the most popular version of Batfam (thanks Nolan). I love Nightwing, but he is kinda low on the totem poll which is why he hasn’t gotten a lot of adapted content. Despite being a relatively safe solo comic seller, that’s really all he is. Outside of Nightwing solo, he doesn’t do much. A big part of this (well a big suspected part) is because of the awkward aging of Dick in the first place, being put with titans, how poorely received the Batman and Robin movie was, the failure of Young Justice (which was cancelled due to low toy sells) and how popular the BTAS universe and Nolanverse were actually becoming.
The current Nightwing editor (who is also in charge of Detective Comics and Batgirls) is a Batgirl fan and mostly DickBabs shipper but only for Babs not for Dick. Don’t expect anything permanent to come out of it. They’ve been trying to retool Jason Bard for her for ages (which is why it’s highly likely he is the love interest in her live action) And there is also a subtle push for Babs and Jason Todd too (thanks Three Jokers). I’m not saying DickBabs isn’t a thing or that DC doesn’t care, but I am saying that DickBabs isn’t gonna get anywhere near the same support BatCat or LoisClark get for very obvious reasons. (Chaotic Whisper: it’s because Bruce Babs is actually still a very profitable romance or partnership and majority of non-comic book readers associate Babs more with Bruce than Dick or even robin so DC is likely holding best Babs hostage for Batman content, see Batman Lego Movie).
Sip or spit xD but this is just what I know from whispers and sources
Oh I definitely believe a lot of this which is actually quite sad when you remember Dick was forced to become a major batfam player again because they weren’t profitable and he (Titans) were 😭 and yeah tbh my relationship w B and Babs as a ship is complicated because yes comic accuracy yes he’s not her dad (nor would I say they even really have a mentor relationship half the time she’s actually p independent) so like it’s fine to me in universes she’s very much an adult and not dating Dick (Lego for ex) but it’s just. Not my thing she’s dated his son too much for it not to be a lil weird 😭 and yeah given titans success as a show tbh I’ve just been kinda waiting for Taylor to leave nw and for them to start marketing towards that audience like I hated the pre Taylor runs but at least they tried to give him new love interests 😭 I know it’s not endgame but god I hate it being shoved down my throat rn especially with how badly written it is if they were at least written well I could stomach it 😭

If the Batfam were Lanterns, which color do you think they'd be?
Lantern Corps are like Hogwarts Houses. I can (with my extremely limited understanding of the Corps) make a case for most of the Bats being a good fit for most of the corps.
Honestly, it would seriously depend on my mood, which canon I was using, and which stories I wanted to tell. But I’ll try to keep it pretty brief.
{{{Side note... all the Bats can be Green. But the ones I’ve chosen to be Green are because it fits them best and/or none of the other fit at all. (Also, this is excellent timing because I’ve just learned on Discord the other day that Indigo wearers are NOT compassion incarnate and that they are, in fact, terrible people forced to feel compassion for all the people they’ve hurt... so I will not be using that one at all... not really anyway...)}}}
Bruce: Red/Rage.
In the early days of Batman, probably Yellow but, lets be real, Gotham criminals aren’t scared of Bruce anymore. He’s not “instilling great fear”. What he is, is a tightly wound ball of barely controlled rage. He fits Red better than anyone else in the family.
Dick: Blue/Hope.
I feel like this one is easy and obvious. To me, Dick is the hopeful center of not just the batfam but the entire DC universe. If I were to write a Blue Lantern Dick fic it’d probably be centered around the idea that he’s the first Blue Lantern to be able to access the power ring’s full powers without the presence of a Green Lantern OR go really sappy and like, make his brothers Green Lanterns and they’re this juggernaut of a team. Although Red Lantern Dick has just, oodles of potential, I think at his core Dick is an agent of hope, the bright spot to follow through the dark tunnel because it brings you out the other side.
In fearful day, in raging night,With strong hearts full, our souls ignite,When all seems lost in the War of Light,Look to the stars-- For hope burns bright!
That’s Dick.
Jason: Violet/Love.
Red Lantern Jason is valid and I may or may not have one in the works but rage is not what motivates him. Jason wasn’t mad at Bruce for not saving him, he was hurt when he thought he wasn’t loved enough to be avenged and was seemingly easily replaceable. No, Jason’s primary emotion is love when his character isn’t being butchered for a cheap shout out to the poll that killed him. No matter how many times his family kicks him to the curb when they’re mad at him, he’s right back at their side when they need him. Read their oath and tell me that’s not Jason (especially post-Flashpoint Jason):
For hearts long lost and full of fright,For those alone in blackest night,Accept our ring and join our fight,Love conquers all-- with violet light!
Tim and Barbara: Green/Will.
I’m so set on Green for these two that I can’t even think of anywhere else they might fit. More than any of the others, Will defines them. Tim’s very first story is him being more determined that Batman and Nightwing. He works his ass off to be the best Robin he can be, he stubbornly searches for Bruce when everyone else believes he’s dead, he doesn’t give in or give up when even Dick is trying to convince him that the loss is affecting his mental health... when Tim sets his mind to something, he fucking does it. And Barbara... the Joker crippling her could have ended her superhero career. But she said “fuck that” and didn’t let the clown take the thing she loved so much and built an intelligence empire to support the entire superhero community.
Steph: Should probably be Green too,
just because her parents are crap, Bruce treats her like garbage, she had a baby as a teen, and Black Mask tortures the shit out of her and she doesn’t let any of it stop her from doing her thing. No one believes in her and she just... persists. So yeah, I guess I’m gonna use Green more than I thought, lol. Although... since Steph was kind of written to showcase all the self-destructive tendencies that DC kept trying to insist Jason had as Robin... if I were going to play with the Ultraviolet Corps, I’d use Steph to do it.
Cass: Yellow/Fear.
If Cass doesn’t instill great fear, it’s just because someone doesn’t know what she’s capable of. She may be non-lethal, but she’s terrifying in all the ways Bruce was/wishes he is. I kind of see Yellow Lantern Cass as being a lot like Soranik in Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps Rebirth before she gets pissed at Kyle and ruins things.
Damian: Orange/Avarice.
At least Damian when he’s young and first shows up. When he assumes Robin, and everything of Bruce’s is his by right. I mean... the oath for the Orange Lantern is “The power is mine, this is my light. Be it in bright of day or black of night. I lay claim to all that falls within my sight. To take what I want, that is my right!” And I think that kind of perfectly sums up Damian’s early attitude. Right now he probably belongs either in Red or Violet depending on what you want to write.
Duke: Green/Will.
Mostly because he started the Robin Movement (not to be confused with being a Robin) in Gotham to affect change and lead/was responsible for a bunch of kids. It takes a lot of strength and will to look around you and try to change the things that suck. Also... none of the others really fit for him.
