Here's the song they refused to let my senior class use as the theme for Prom.
Never understood that. This has always felt Hopepunk, decades before I heard that term.
Anyway, if you have insight into why my dumb high school 's grownups refused to let us use it?
Hit me. And enjoy the song meanwhile.

summary:
Yang Jeongin has been dreading his twenty-first birthday for as long as he can remember.
It’s not that he fears ageing — in fact, he’s of the unpopular opinion that your teens and low twenties are probably doomed to be the most dramatic and harrowing of your life by default, and things can only get better once you gain a little more wisdom and perspective and get a better haircut. And since his friends already compare him to a fox, a silver fox would be even better, right?
Whatever. He’ll revisit that thought on his fiftieth.
No, there’s nothing particularly upsetting about ageing another year (he’s not gonna get all existential about it like Chan or Jisung), so he’s not the type to be overly depressed on his birthday like some people. All his friends are older than him anyway, so it’s nice to catch up with them a little each time.
But twenty-one…
Twenty-one is the year he’ll finally know who his soulmate is.

Love at First Set - Book Review
A new Jennifer Dugan book drops this month! I'm so excited!
Jennifer Dugan’s latest book comes out May 23, later this month! And if you haven’t pre-ordered it or bothered your local bookstore to find out the very moment it comes in, get to it! Jennifer Dugan is one of my favorite authors who writes queer books, usually for teens. Either way, she is a rockstar, and I was fortunate enough to be able to read this book earlier! While I can’t spoil it,…

Book Review: Melt With You by Jennifer Dugan
Okay, my poor gay heart needs more of Dugan's writing now. I finished this book in like a day, and I loved every second.
Dugan (from the two books of hers that I have read so far) is a master of the enemies-to-lovers trope. I mean, Fallon and Chloe were besties but then became "enemies" before becoming friends and more again, but still!
I loved the narration of Fallon. She's got such a great personality to read. She expressed such a range of emotions that made me feel the same right along with her. She was admittedly a bit frustrating to read at points about telling Chloe how she felt, but even she admitted her faults, so I guess that's okay in my books haha. Besides, if she did follow Jami's advice (sound advice, great friend, by the way, we all need a Jami in our lives) and told Chloe her true feelings and just talked it out, we wouldn't have had a novel.
I love the whole road trip thing, and Chloe was so sweet in her side adventures to show how much she cared for Fallon. It made my gay heart melt. (Pun intended).
These two characters were compatible, even with their flaws. They were relatable and so well written, and I enjoyed reading about their journey. Also, gotta love a good "only one-bed" trope done right.
If you are looking for a great sapphic read, this book is worth it. It will melt your heart into gooey goodness.

Title: Melt With You
Author: Jennifer Dugan
Genre: YA Fiction | Romance | Road Trip | LGBTQ+
Content Warnings:
Overall Rating: 6.2/10
Personal Opinion: No more books where characters know the solution and do not act on it. Please. Especially if the solution is: talk. That aside, I did find parts of this book to be charming. And if you’re into messy WLW love stories where the girls have through-the-roof romantic/sexual tension then this is definitely the book for you. I may not be the biggest fan but maybe you will. Art is subjective.
Couple Classification: Fallon X Chloe = Nerd X Prep
Do I Own This Book? No.
Spoilers Below For My Likes & Dislikes:
Likes:
- My favorite aspect of this book? Jami and Prisha. They are such good best friends for always being there for Fallon every time Fallon needed them. The support they give her while also being honest with her is respectful. I also love how well—Jami especially—can read Fallon. Unlike how badly Fallon and Chloe can read each other.
- The conversational tone of Fallon’s narration was certainly charming at times. It provided some levity and comedy during the more tense moments which I really appreciated.
- I love how much Fallon and Chloe care about their moms. They saw Maggie and Carmen stressing out about the deal and they knew they had to do all they could for their moms. It was so sweet.
- The ice cream truck is so cute. I love the flavor names and it actually makes me want ice cream. But seriously, the concept is adorable and I think it’s a unique and compelling device to use to have Fallon and Chloe together in the same space.
- Esther and Layla are so cute and such a good couple. They did everything they could to help Fallon and Chloe when their truck got vandalized and they were so cute together. I also just love seeing elder queer couples thriving. As they should be!
Dislikes:
- Fallon and Chloe can’t read each other for shit. And you’re telling me they’ve been besties since birth? No way. They had to have been deliberately acting blind because there was no way. Since it was from Fallon’s POV, I am inclined to hate her more. Especially because she had said that she hated when characters don’t talk things out in a story. Not only that but Jami and Prisha both advised her multiple times to tell Chloe the full truth and Fallon just straight up refused. It was so frustrating because the solutions were right there! Fallon knew it and yet she didn’t act on it! For fuck’s sake woman.
- Chloe isn’t much better. She knows Fallon so well that she can finish her sentences and she knows when Fallon is directing her “mind movies.” But she can’t tell that Fallon is in love with her? Jesus Christ woman, just confess your own feelings instead of jumping to conclusions!
- And then the moms went and lied to their daughters. I hate that. Because I’ve fucking been there. My parents lied to me and my brother about something once to get us to do something and it ended up being one of the most traumatic experiences in our lives. Legit, the moms are so fucking lucky that their lie ended up working out for Fallon and Chloe because otherwise, they’d be spending a lot of time in therapy for this.
- Fallon couldn’t even try to be civil toward Chloe. That’s what I hate most. She was deliberately acting like a child. And she’s the rational responsible one???

Melt With You (Book Review)
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Information
Author: Jennifer Dugan
Genre: Young Adult Romance
Page Number: 305
Summary
In this compelling tale of friendship, romance, and the complexities of human relationships, two girls who once shared an inseparable bond find themselves estranged. Chloe and Fallon were the best of friends, their closeness unrivalled until a fateful encounter the summer before Chloe departed for college changed everything. Their impulsive decision to hook up created a rift fueled by a cascade of misunderstandings, ultimately leading to their silence.
A year later, Chloe returns home for a break from school, only to find that Fallon is determined to keep her distance. The story delves into the emotional turmoil and lingering feelings both girls experience as they navigate their way through the consequences of their actions and the pain of lost friendship.
Thoughts
Fallon starts off as witty and responsible, but as the story goes on, she becomes a bit of a "Monica Geller," getting overly controlling. Her best friends, Jami and Prisha, are always there for her, but Fallon seems to be constantly stuck on Chloe and her unhappiness.
The main problem in the book is that all the drama comes from a need for communication. Even though the girls are young, it feels unlikely they'd avoid talking about their issues for so long, especially when they're stuck together. And honestly, the idea that their moms would let them drive a big truck across state lines alone seems pretty far-fetched. Sure, Fallon is eighteen, but that's still a lot of responsibility to dump on her.
The mothers also don't respect boundaries, manipulating things to get what they want, which adds unnecessary drama and makes the ending feel rushed. When Chloe and Fallon finally talk, Chloe is mad at Fallon for lying about their night together being her first time, accusing her of using Chloe to lose her virginity. But it seems pretty clear that Fallon is actually in love with Chloe. Despite some unrealistic plot points, the book does a good job of exploring young love and how easily things can get messed up when people don't communicate.

Melt With You Review

Melt With You by Jennifer Dugan - 3/5 - Sapphic YA RomCom
As I've mentioned in other blog posts, I am in my Jennifer Dugan revival era. To wrap this up, I read her 2022 novel, Melt With You. The book was average with some high and low points. It left me with some mixed feelings and the desire to skip reviewing it altogether. Of course, I've only done that when I couldn't bring myself to recommend a book at all. I don't feel a sense of loyalty to Dugan but Melt With You still deserves some love.
The night before Chloe went off to college, she and Fallon hooked up. When the aftermath didn't turn out how either of them expected, the two stopped talking for nearly a year. Now it's the next summer and they're back in the same town. What's more awkward is that their mothers need them to help out with the joint-family business. Their mothers are needed at an investor meeting that happens to be at the same time as a major food truck festival, where the "Love At First Bite" ice cream truck is needed. Can they get along long enough to get their mothers' truck to the event or will they ice each other out?
